Reviews
The hotel receives mixed reviews with guests appreciating the beautiful historic building, convenient location, and friendly staff. However, many guests express disappointment with the outdated rooms, lack of amenities, and poor service, particularly in the restaurant and with the valet.

Attended a wedding that was held at Hotel Ella and also stayed on site! Great location, fun pool and the room we had overlooking the pool was nice. The front desk staff, Austii and Noah were very helpful as well! Only downside- better AC needed in main lobby and the overnight valet parking is expensive but the valet guys were great!

Lovely little hotel.

I really enjoyed my stay at this quaint hotel. Excellent value and walking distance to UT campus and my conference venue, but had a nice and quiet refuge atmosphere. Staff was excellent, friendly and courteous.

If you know you will need your car before 7am, make sure the front desk has the clicker to let you out of the parking lot, or you will sit there until valet shows up AND still get charge $50 for your time.

Lovely hotel, grounds were landscaped well. Overall a nice stay.

Nothing like the photos. Motel level accommodations with a nice restaurant & kind waiter. The motel level was hidden under a decorative veneer. Price too high for the reality of accommodations & services rendered.

I’ve stayed at our hotel a number of times .. alas I had to cancel a day before arrival because my meeting was canceled .. I called the hotel and let them know .. however was told I had to call hotels.com to cancel.. let the hotel know that I was going to cancel .. tried to call hotels.com that same day but was not able to get through . So called the next day that said day of arrival they called the hotel and was told they would not be able to cancel at that short notice.. so lost out out on the full cost of the hotel .. so not happy

The room is spacious and very clean. The cozy little bar in the hotel serves light meals, and the bartender was personable and fun to listen to as she shares her stories. They also offer valet service, which was fantastic. We felt very comfortable and relaxed, and I would highly recommend Hotel Ella if you're in Austin, TX.

Would recommend putting tile or engineered wood under and around the sink area rather than carpet. Other than that, Hotel Ella gets an A+

A beautiful property, with lovely room and a decent location Unfortunately to park on the property you must use the valet for $50 per day. That unpleasant experience upon arrival leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.

The hotel was understaffed during a major event happening in the city. Service at front desk and restaurant were very slow due to lack of staff.

Main building was a well-maintained historic building. The hotel was understaffed during a major event happening in the city. Service at front desk and restaurant were very slow due to lack of staff.

Elevator was broken entire stay.
- 3/5
Pretty dilapidated. The elevator was broken. Only one front desk person on staff. Wierd vibe.
- 2/5
The Hotel no longer cleans rooms unless you make a specific request. My room was quiet, with a view of a blank fence. There is often no staff around and the service in the restaurant is extremely slow. Because it is a wedding/party venue it can be very very noisy late into the night and there is trash on the porch in the morning. It used to be a nicer place.

Front desk was courteous, bartender was sketchy, cleaning completely skipped our room one day. Pool area was relaxing.

The room was spotless, and the bartender was incredibly friendly, which made me feel especially comfortable as a solo traveler. I felt completely safe and truly loved every aspect of the hotel. The bed was very comfortable, the shower had excellent water pressure, and the drinks were fantastic. The valets and front desk staff were all extremely warm and welcoming. I will absolutely be staying here again.

This hotel is in a historic home. It’s beautiful and the front desk staff is fantastic. Unfortunately they did not have hot water in the hotel and the valet was atrocious. We waited more than 35 minutes for our car.

Great location nice room ,loves the bed linens smelled so fresh. Only downside was like any big intercity hotel parking was expensive it was 33 precent of the total room cost, that seems excessive.

This is my third stay--staff is delightful, bed very comfortable. Location if you're in the University area is awesome. Love the fun historic, old Austin, laid back and comfortable but still schmancy vibe. Restaurant is a win. Like it all!
- 3.5/5
Historic theme, with excellent breakfast. Security is low as keypad entry was void from street into guest rooms! Housekeeping was subpar and never came to pickup food tray for three days; There was an unpleasant stench in hallways, and carpets a little gross.
- 5/5
Clean, character and love the veranda for coffee!

Staff, room, and restaurant were all great!

Nice relaxing place with great staff; and I mean all the staff.

The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was very nice. Carpets are quite dirty in the hallways. Reception wasn’t rude but also wasn’t super welcoming either.

- 5/5
Such a cute hotel! A little challenging getting ready in the morning as the vanity is just a sink without much space. Had a great breakfast there at the restaurant. Beds were comfortable and pretty quiet. Very charming!
- 4/5
Everyone was courteous but also not well trained. For a very seasoned traveler used to luxe accommodations and first class service- this isn’t the hotel to stay at, rather it’s a place to visit for the porch, common areas, bar and restaurant.
- 4/5
Room and staff were good. Parking was efficient but too expensive and separate billing meant more paperwork. Hotel was helpful when needed.
- 5/5
Very nice staff, Isaac was great. Such a cute hotel. Clean room and loved the balcony.
- 3/5
The staff was not at all friendly or helpful. Rather than opening the door for me when my hands were full they walked away. The room was just ok. The bed pillows were overdue for replacement. They were flat and old. The room was clean. The door did not close easily. The location is great and close to downtown and north Austin but being close to campus also meant the nights were a little noisy.
- 4/5
The room was adequate, good size. There was no view other than the parking area for the apartments behind the hotel. Not a lot of good restaurants within a 10 minute walk. No close by shopping to speak of. Overall, our stay was fine, but a bit over priced.

Room was great—clean, comfortable, and attractive. However our main issue came from the valet protocol. Please advertise valet only and or mention options of parking on the street. If valet is only possible, include it in nightly fee. The current system is misleading and appears to simply be a cash grab

Big room and nice big size bathroom with room for accessories. Nice shower. Quiet & comfortable Resturant had no air . Waiter not pleasant.
- 4/5
The room and hotel were very clean, and the staff was courteous. The internet password was not provided and I couldn't reach the front desk by phone to get it, nor was anyone available when I walked down to desk.
- 4/5
There was no staff at the check-in desk when I arrived, which was fine as I was heading to the in-house bar to meet a friend. Bar service was friendly and made excellent cocktails. I did arrive mid afternoon on a Sunday and the hotel in general was not busy. The room was clean and large. The valet made sure it was easy for me to get my car the next morning for a 6 AM check out. The lobby offers coffee and water, but unfortunately, the coffee was not ready when I was checking out.

Lovely pool area that feels like an urban retreat in the middle of Austin. Staff was friendly.

We love this hotel. Super comfortable room and wonderful restaurant, bar and poolside. Excellent location. More comfortable and spacious than other West Campus hotels.

Hotel Ella was a beautiful historical gem with a great location in West Austin. The staff was friendly and helpful with any questions we had about the city and surrounding area. We look forward to staying here again on our next trip to Austin.

Everything about this hotel was awesome!! The location super central. The food delicious! Great drinks and staff as well. I was able to check in early and late with no problem. Definitely recommend.

We were in the Austin area for a family wedding. Other family members stayed at Hotel Ella as well. We had a nice time at Hotel Ella. It is an intimate setting. We all had a great day at their pool and enjoyed their great customer service. The valet was also convenient and very fast.

We didn’t linger long since we had a concert to attend, but when we returned later that night, things didn’t improve. Trying to sleep was a challenge—the lights from the patio streamed in so brightly that it felt like daylight. The trim around the windows seemed to amplify the glow, making it nearly impossible to rest. At least the room was quiet, which was the only real comfort. Morning brought more disappointment. The towels were shockingly thin and worn—definitely not what you’d expect from a hotel claiming four-star status. As I was getting ready to leave, I sat in the chair near the coffee table to put on my shoes, only to find it covered in old drink rings and grime. It looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in years. While the staff were friendly and polite, the overall experience was far from luxurious. This hotel is in serious need of a refresh. Based on our stay, I wouldn’t rate it anywhere near a 9.0 or call it a four-star experience. Disappointing and surprising, to say the least.
- 3/5
Lackluster desk personnel
- 2/5
$50 valet which is pretty common but they had 1 person working so we waited so long to get our car. The app you are suppose to use wasn’t working so the valet guy argued with us and said he couldn’t fetch our car bc we might be trying to steal it. What?!?!? It was ridiculous. Soooooo many better options. The girl at check in wasn’t very friendly either. Actually none of the staff were. Stay away!!
- 5/5
Overall a great stay, only complaint is that I had gone to the front desk a few times and no one was ever there and I had to stand and wait for at least 10 minutes each time.
- 4/5
I was so excited to stay here. I passed this building all the time as an architecture student. The staff is very nice and accommodating. We had a mini suite (which is an extra roomy room) and it was adjacent to the old balcony area next to the columns. We had a friend come and we ate dinner out there with food ordered from the hotel. Everything was tasty, and delivered with gusto. It was fun
- 4/5
The main house was beautiful! The staff were friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable as were the pillows. We loved the bar (especially our server, Max) and enjoyed sitting on the porch. Every staff member we interacted with was kind and welcoming. There were a few times we found ourselves waiting longer than expected at the front desk and for valet service. Our room was clean and comfortable, though it felt a bit dated. For the price point, it would go a long way to offer a few more amenities, and the pool was smaller than we anticipated based on the website photos.
- 4/5
This hotel is beautiful and quaint. We didn't try the restaurant because it was closed but noticed it had good reviews. The pool area was very cute. I loved that there was Nespresso in the room. The only complaint that I have is that there is required valet parking and the cost is $50 per night, which I think is very excessive. It is also inconvenient to have to request your car every time (although the valet staff was very quick in retrieving the car once it was requested). I would stay here again if I didn't have a rental car.
- 5/5
Loved the proximity to the UT Campus. Everything was excellent!
- 3.5/5
The hotel is beautiful. The location was perfect to be in downtown The restaurant wasn’t really open. We tried to get coffee and no one was available
- 5/5
I wish I had upgraded to a room by the pool! Great accommodation. Excellent round the clock care. Easy check in. Comfy bed. Great restaurant with a changing menu and relaxing pool! I loved that you could order food by the pool as well. Valet is expensive overnight but worth it.
- 4/5
One of my favorite spots to stay in Austin
- 5/5
The property is gorgeous and the staff is incredible. Caroline at the front desk gave us an excellent recommendations for places to eat and things to do. Max at the bar was friendly and made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. We will be back for sure!
- 5/5
Nice, small, boutique hotel. Walkable to campus, AT&T conference center, many shops/places to eat. I always enjoy staying in west campus as a for Longhorn parent. Bed was comfy, good pillows.
- 4/5
Room was spacious and comfortable. Bed and bedding was comfortable. We did not use any of the other hotel amenities. Hotel is very pretty and in/out access to our room was great. Room view is very nice. We had a car and used street parking, which was very easy and convenient. The A/C was really loud and the air coming out of it was blowing so hard it was blowing my hair around while sitting on the bed (from the vent across the room). That was a major complaint of ours. Little touches could be improved though: shower head was terrible, the toilet paper holder was not on properly, elec socket in bathroom was improperly installed, the over the sink bathroom mirror was not practical, please name the nespresso pods (regular, decaf, what even is it?), no wascloths provided.
- 2/5
It’s not the staff’s fault but they simply did not have enough people on staff during my stay and therefore the service was really slow and the staff was obviously comfortable with it. Seemed like no manager was on site.
- 5/5
Everything except bar didn’t open until 3 pm

Had a wonderful stay, in Austin for a concert at the Moody Center and Hotel Ella was conveniently located. The staff was courteous, helpful, and professional. We will stay again, but hopefully we book when there isn’t a wedding. Several amenities are not available to guests that are not guests of the wedding.

- 5/5
Very cute hotel, beautiful rooms and nice pool. The bartender was awesome and we had a nice dinner and cocktails without having to leave the hotel. Would stay again if in Austin.
- 5/5
A very positive experience from checking to check out. The only drawback is having to pay for parking on the premises.
- 5/5
Good value for the price. Nice service staff.
- 1/5
Out of the blue $45 valet only parking ,unless you could find somewhere on a street. Dirty sheets. Did not come replace after we asked. Came back to no sheets on bed. Transferred is to smaller room in middle of night. Dog next door.
- 4/5
It was a very nice stay. The front desk employees could be a little more friendly and attentive to guests.
- 5/5
Very close to everything we needed!
- 4/5
I dined in the restaurant for dinner my first night, and the food and service were really good. However, I attempted to dine again twice for breakfast but did not enjoy those experiences. The waiter on one day seemed annoyed to be working, which made it uncomfortable. The next day, there was only a waitress on staff that seemed overwhelmed with only 3 tables. I was left for 30 minutes with the menu with no service which was a waste of time. Lastly, the elevator was broken for three days which could be inconvenient for those with mobility issues or when brining or removing luggage from the upper floors. I hope to return to Austin, but don't think I will come back to this hotel.
- 4/5
Beautiful old mansion remade as a hotel. The side building however lacks the same grandeur. Rooms show wear and limited in-room comforts like an ironing board are missed. The in-room dining is extremely limited. Lighter options and snacks would be a good idea. That said, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The young man tending bar in the lounge is especially charming and welcoming.
- 5/5
This is the second visit to Hotel Ella and it's been great each time. Love the history and character of the hotel and the staff are very helpful.
- 3/5
Overall our stay was O. K. The bed was very uncomfortable, our shower door leaked a lot. The room was too small, and the bathroom was like a closet
- 5/5
My first choice when staying in Austin
- 5/5
Beautiful place, friendly staff
- 5/5
Very friendly and professional staff. Clean and well maintained. My room’s coffee machine did not work , so the on-site manager came within 5 minutes and relocated to another room, a great one. A bit expensive since only valet parking is available but I will say the money is well spent. Five star overall.
- 3/5
Hotel Ella is a family mansion converted into a supposedly hotel. I don’t the conversion was complete or smart. Take for example the bathrooms for guest on the entry level. They are located outside the main house and remind me of campground bathrooms. There’s small elevator that 1 person can take otherwise you have use the stairs. The rooms need a total refresh, paint, new linens and drapes, storage in the bathroom because there is none, new electrical outlets that have USB slots and new carpet. There’s on site small bar with some food and a restaurant that was closed for private event on my visit. It looked nice. Redeeming qualities: fish tacos were excellent; the outdoor space and front porch are very nice. Staying in the auxiliary building not so nice. Location is great. Won’t stay until they do a serious and much need renovation.
- 5/5
Wonderful hotel, a 10 min walk from the conference centre. Cute pool and nice rooms.
- 2/5
Hotel staff poorly trained . Valet , waitstaff , check in desk . I never complain or write reviews . The maid was the nicest most competent person at the hotel . Hotel Ella is not worth the premium they charge .
- 1/5
I waited at the front desk for 10 minutes. Couldn’t find anyone, called their number and no answer. I walked to the back kitchen and someone said they would come check me in. I get to the room, scan the QR code and it wasn’t the correct menu. I text the info to pull my car around. The valet attendant was asleep in his car. I was shocked and disappointed.

My husband and son stayed here 2 weeks ago and had a great experience. I booked it for myself as I was helping my son move in to Austin. Daniel, the manager, was very nice upon checking in. He gave me his card and asked me to contact him if I had any issues. Daniel mentioned a wedding was happening the next day (Sunday) and that the main dining room would be closed. I asked if my son and I could have breakfast the next morning, he said the smaller dining room would be open. The next morning, at 8 am, the entire lobby and both dining rooms were crammed with wedding guests. I asked the very unfriendly receptionist if there was room for my son and I to eat, she said, only outside. Well, it was a very chilly morning. So we ate elsewhere. The night before, I had brought a bottle of wine to the room and had a glass, and placed it corked on the side with my personal items. After a long day of moving in, I returned to the hotel and the wine was gone. I called the front desk, another very unfriendly and unprofessional receptionist, and he said the cleaning service probably threw it away. I said, well it was with my personal belongings. I asked if he could bring one glass of wine to my room. He said he would have to reach out to management to ask. I didn't hear back for over an hour, so I called back down. He said the bartender was too busy with other guests but I could come get it myself. I have a foot condition and my foot was very swollen, and after another hour I

I was in Austin for a heart ablation at St David's and had to wait an additional day after surgery. It is a beautiful and comfortable hotel. The staff was very attentive and amicable. We ate in the restaurant, and the food was very tasty. I only have 2 complaints, our TV didn't work during our stay, which is not a big deal I'm not a great fan of TV anyway. The other issue was I was stranded in the elevator a bit comical really. I managed to get the elevator to respond to move from the 2nd floor to the basement . With a sore incision, I had to climb 2 flights of stairs back to my room (ouch) I looked at it as therapy. Would I stay again? Absolutely! , but I would check TV just in case.
- 3/5
Bad carpet perfume smell ruined this stay… We stayed in the annex building next-door to the mansion and it just smells horrible. They need to replace the carpeting that’s been there for decades.
- 5/5
Wonderful!
- 4/5
The check in staff was wonderful. She helped me find a larger room when we arrived. The bar server was great-very friendly and most apologetic when food took a long time. Dinner was disappointing - food delivered was not what was described on the menu.

The staff was so friendly, & the room was very comfortable & clean.

They changed not for the good as far as quality over last couple lontbs
- 5/5
The property was very unique, and we loved that it was historical. Staff were extremely nice and even upgraded our room when they learned it was our 30th anniversary. They went above and beyond to provide anything we needed. It was a wonderful experience in every way!
- 5/5
This is an old mansion reworked into a hotel. The beds and pillows and AC were very comfortable, indeed above the price level. The bathroom was small and the vanity mirror was beveled in an pretty but non-functional way, so that if you are height of an average woman, the wood frame splits right in the middle of your face. There was a make up magnifier mirror though. Nonetheless, I wonder if those who order furniture consider such things.
- 5/5
This hotel is a great find next to UT campus. The rooms are on the smaller side but we weren’t there to be in our room. The staff and service was exceptional!
- 3/5
The property is aging and needs to be updated. The beds were comfortable and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The worst part was that I was awakened every time the airconditioner came on. It was blowing so hard the I had to put the covers over my head because it was blowing my hair. Because there was only one small vent for a larger room it heated up very quickly between cycles. Very little sleep and very uncomfortable.
- 4/5
Love staying here. One area of coaching- the lunch waiter was bored, yawning loudly. Kind of weird. I never signed a check so I have no idea if he put his tip on? Also, the lobby smelled like really strong garlic or curry on Thursday for about 24 hours. Just a few things I noticed. Lovely front desk personnel!
- 2/5
TV didn't work and I waited more than 15 min to pick up my car.
- 3/5
Not my favorite location as basically off a major road. The hotel was ok but could use a refresh. The lion in the hallway seemed strange.
- 5/5
We had an amazing time at Hotel Ella a few weeks ago! Issac is simply the best! He is personable, funny and very accommodating! All three of the valet staff members were great as well! The beautiful boutique hotel is a combination of mid century mod mixed with a neoclassic design. We will definetely be back! Sincerely, The McGowens

Property is gorgeous, rooms are beautiful and the staff was very kind.

We love ella
- 4/5
Was a nice room in downtown. I got it for a business trip and I don't think this is really a business hotel. It would be perfect for a family or couple vacation though. So if not for business, it is definitely a nice hotel in a good location
- 5/5
We only stayed at this hotel for one night to attend a concert at Moody Center. The location was convenient - we took an Uber there and walked back. The hotel's appearance was quite impressive, and the welcoming nature of the front desk staff especially struck us. They truly made our night special. A very kind gesture that we greatly appreciated!
- 5/5
Very nice and helpful staff.
- 5/5
Loved it! Highly recommend!
- 5/5
We have stayed at Hotel Ella several times at always enjoy our stay. But this time I felt compelled to give a special shout out to Daniel West at the front desk and Elli, our valet. These two employees went up and beyond to make sure everything was perfect for us. Thanks!

What a gem of a place. It was clean, quiet and had great character. The location is incredibly convenient, and the service I received was excellent. The front desk employee really went above and beyond for me—that’d be reason enough for me to return. I certainly hope to stay here again in the future.

Beautiful boutique hotel with an excellent staff. The porch was so nice to sit and just watch life go by. I did not try the pool but it was pretty to look at. I wasn't thrilled about the view from our room (trash dumpsters and really bad apartment complex) but the room was nice. The room had a refrigerator but not a microwave which would have been helpful. The toilet and shower head could use an upgrade :)

The staff at Hotel Ella is wonderful. From the super helpful valet to the hilarious & attentive bartender, customer service is great. It’s nice to have good food & drink options without requiring you to leave the property, too! And a bottle of wine included? Awesome.

This hotel is advertised as a boutique hotel, but it is nothing as advertised. The hotel can easily be seen as a cheap renovation of an old dirty motel. The furniture and carpet is in desperate need of cleaning, upholstering, or outright gutting. The vibe is nothing of European quality as advertised. I felt so nasty in this run down, upgrade of a motel. Then the clerk was patronizing in a manner to which she told me the room I would be getting is “not like the picture I saw on the internet,we gave you an upgrade of that room.” Oh, there is NO ONSITE barking, only valet for $45 nightly for a rundown motel room. I faired better by finding street parking using the meter for my one night stay. I tried to not let this ruin my experience of the CB concert!
