Could only heck in to my room at 4 pm but there was zero flexibility to extend check out from 12 pm to even 12.30 pm. So you pay for the room for 20 hours. I have never experienced such inflexibility before in any hotel stay. Very disappointing.
- 5/5
The hotel is so lovely and so are the people working there. So very kind, helpful and friendly! I’ve been to La Jolla a lot over the years, but this is by far my favorite place I’ve stayed. I definitely will be coming back and you cannot beat the location!! 5 stars all around!
- 5/5
Great location and wonderful hospitality. We had left behind an article of clothing and didn’t realize it until we were on the plane home. After I turned my phone on when we landed the hotel was calling me to offer to mail it to us!
- 5/5
Great location and cute historical hotel. Loved our stay and hope to return one day.
- 5/5
Everything seemed well kept.
- 5/5
Large room and the golf cart service was great!
- 5/5
Very professional. We checked in early not expecting our room to be ready. They provided an excellent room that was ready and we checked in. The food and beverage staff was great and the valet as well. I would highly recommend this property for anyone staying in LaJolla. Your expectations will be exceeded

A charming property with a great view and wonderful service
- 5/5
It's a beautiful hotel situated in the heart of everything we wanted to do. From the front desk, to the restaurant, to the valet and maintenance staff, everyone was super friendly and helpful! We had a King room with ocean view which was large, comfortable and had the views to enjoy sunset. We had breakfast in the restaurant and it was excellent - from the prosciutto eggs benny to the salmon bagel it was plenty of food and very flavorful. Easy walk to everything by the waterfront. Would highly recommend and will stay here again the next time we're in La Jolla!
- 5/5
Perfect location, lovely hotel, home away from home!
- 5/5
Wonderful property. I would stay there again. Staff were great and parking was easy.
- 5/5
We absolutely enjoyed our 4 days in this beautiful hotel in beautiful La Jolla. Everything was so clean, the restaurant served a delicious breakfast (we only had time for breakfast) and we were within walking distance of so much. Being from Texas, I’m going to miss the weather!!!
- 5/5
Staffs were friendly and cordial. Parking (valet) was easy. Location is great! You can simply walk to the La Jolla Cove from the hotel. I really recommend this hotel if you are going to La Jolla/San Diego.
- 4/5
The hotel is amazing. Book a room with an ocean view, if possible. Ours was on the 4th floor and the view was spectacular. The mattress on the bed was a bit on a softer side for us but I guess it is a pe

Great place to have a weekend getaway. Close to everything! Pedal assist bikes on property allowed us to visit the area and the free first hour and helmets were a great perk.

They have hidden fees, and they are not clear about it.
- 5/5
Wonderful Stay!
- 5/5
This is an very interesting historical building (although there are several buildings to the same property) with one of the best locations possible. We were welcomed and felt cared for our needs, during our stay. The room was comfortable and we liked to be able to open the windows and let in the fresh air from the ocean. We also had no worries about the parking (which can be challenging in La Jolla).
- 5/5
Beautiful, spacious room with an ocean view (room 101). The location is excellent for walking to Seal Beach or around town. The staff are friendly and helpful.
- 4/5
Great location, lovely room , friendly cleaning lady Esmeralda , Vicente and helpful Ismael.
- 4/5
Nice location. Decent rooms (a little tired). Decent staff (not super interested in welcoming/friendly reviews). Really, the location and the decent level of comfort are the reasons for my choice to stay here.
- 5/5
The valet takes some getting used to. I once ran out of cash for tipping the valets and he was not happy. Overall loved the place

Beautiful house overlooking the sea Great staff
- 5/5
This beautiful gem of a hotel is in the heart of La Jolla Cove and a few blocks from the beach. I stayed in a gorgeous corner ocean view room and the ocean is also visible from the main lobby. Walkable to all the shops and restaurants with a very friendly staff- the valets were super helpful and had my car ready when I came out each morning to get to my conference. Wished I wasn’t on a work trip so I could’ve enjoyed even more but a wonderful treat to come back to each night.

I stayed in the Garden area. It was perfect for me. I really enjoyed the beautiful flowers and sitting areas. I’m a light sleeper and this gated area was very quite and peaceful.

Love the historical touches at this hotel. I’ve stayed twice and will return again. Get the beach view.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!! Loves being walking distance to the Cove and all the great spots on Prospect! Made wonderful memories with my daughters!

- 5/5
Restaurant was on point! Room was cool too
- 4/5
Very nice stay at Christmas. Great rooms, great staff, great location. The only thing that was missig was that little extra Christmas touch. It would have been nice to be given a few cookies, chocolates or candies to celebrate the holidays.
- 5/5
Yes to all aspects and was very enjoyable!!
- 1/5
I was explained that the ballet parking was complementary and that all the amenities in the room were free up charge and now I am being charged 50+ dollars
- 5/5
Great location, excellent restaurant downstairs. Nice rooms. Excellent architecture.
- 4/5
sheets were not clean but they fixed it right away
- 1/5
Our first room was over top of a holiday party and it sounded like they were in the bedroom with us. We moved to the "little hotel" which was equipped much like the state park cabins I've stayed in :( . Everything smelled musty, the carpet felt damp, and the walls were paper thin. Poor experience for sure. Staff was kind but overall it stunk.
- 5/5
Wonderful accommodations looking over the water.
- 5/5
Service from staff was impeccable. Room was well appointed and clean. In room snacks and drinks were a nice touch. All the gentlemen at the door were fabulous.
- 5/5
All very good.
- 5/5
Great place, nice staff I highly recommend
- 5/5
Lovely ambience and quiet, clean room. More space than usual for a hotel room and bedding was so comfortable!
- 4/5
Fun, but crusty
- 5/5
The hotel, amenities and staff were great. However, the smoke detector in our room seemed to be working improperly. Two of the three nights we were there the alarm went off after 1:30 am…
- 5/5
Yes
- 5/5
The hotel is beautiful inside and out. Room was large and very well maintained. Without exception staff was extremely friendly and polite. Valet parking was very friendly and handled expeditiously. Will definitely stay at the Hotel again when we return to La Jolla.

Location and size Entrance doors rattled when other doors closed People walking floor above was noticed
- 5/5
The room was large and had beautiful views of the ocean. The room was very clean. The staff was friendly from the bell staff to the front desk. The restaurant and bar were excellent.
- 5/5
Spacious room with great views. Courteous and helpful staff. Great restaurant!
- 5/5
Clean room. Staff courteous and helpful.
- 5/5
Valet parking was easy; rooms were beautiful and spacious. Staff was very helpful and shuttled us to local restaurant.
- 4/5
Staff very courteous
- 3/5
Incredible location and the staff was exceptionally helpful and kind. The rooms absolutely must be upgraded. For the amount we paid, we expected much higher quality from the carpets, the bed frame, the kitchenette, etc.
- 5/5
The staff was so friendly and helpful. The room was clean and bright and the view was lovely! The location was convenient to all the points of interest downtown. I would book again!
- 5/5
Great location. Iconic hotel. Staff amazing. Room was a little damp- floor and chair but otherwise amazing stay. Would definitely come back
- 5/5
The staff was amazing, especially Kassandra at the front desk. Her friendly demeanor and customer service was outstanding. The rooms are well appointed and clean, with many having ocean views. The ocean and La Jolla Village, with its shops and restaurants, are within easy walking distance. The hotel has the feel of a family owned, boutique hotel.
- 5/5
Stay was wonderful!!! Loved the hotel and area!
- 3/5
I did not have breakfast or drinks. The property is old and looks every day of it. My room faced th e ocean and had a lot of light. But when people were congregating in the outdoor area of the hotel at night it was noisy. I found the staff to be less than helpful in accommodating requests.
- 4/5
Classic hotel in very good location, staff was friendly & guys out front were great.
- 4/5
the TV streaming did not work which was a disappointment -- we called the technician who tried as did the concierge --- no go -- we missed that
- 5/5
Location: The hotel is located in the heart of La Jolla Cove, 2 blocks away from the ocean and the cove where the Sea lions attraction is, as well as the ellen browining scripps park. Service: Front desk was welcoming and very accommodating to our needs. They gave us all the upfront information about our stay, information about the charge on my card which is credit in the event we use any amenities they provide for us (bike rentals, food service, etc.), as well as providing a safeguard on our belongings as we were an hour and a half early prior to check in. Valet is very prompt, polite, and careful with our rental car. They have an offsite garage where they store cars if not in long term use, and have limited side parking on site if you notify them about plan to use car soon. Room: Room was on the smaller side but was clean when we stayed. Bathroom was clean, sheets were free of bugs and stains, room well kept despite age. Only real issue was the carpet could use a deep clean. found myself with dirty feet if barefoot for a period of time. Great hospitality
- 4.5/5
Great location A little older and that was charming too.

Hotel is historical with beautiful moldings. Our 1st night was extremely noisy. We booked a King bedroom with ocean view…if you looked through buildings…not impressed. The room was awkwardly designed and right over pool where they had an event until after 12:30. Around 6:00 am the staff was cleaning up. The noise continued all day. After addressing the front desk they gave us a very nice room this time with an ocean view but took them most of the day before we actually were moved. The valets couldn’t be nicer. I don’t usually complain but not sure I would go back, kind of left me disappointed.
- 5/5
Great hotel in the center of La jolla worth ocean views
- 5/5
What a fabulous hotel! Right in the middle of everything! You walk out the front door and you go down the hill to the ocean or to the right or left there are all the coffee houses, restaurants and boutiques. So beautiful and clean and comfy and I will be back!
- 5/5
My view was very nice and the room is well appointed. I loved having windows that actually opened so I could enjoy the ocean breeze.
- 5/5
Very nice arrival party ,easy check in and fantastic room with all services included.Excellent location to enjoy La Jolla
- 5/5
A great location for sightseeing or shopping.
- 5/5
we had an amazing stay at your hotel, we loved the smallness feel and the ease of getting around. The staff were super friendly! We have never stayed at a hotel that offered free snacks and water! That was an added bonus. The pool was clean and we loved hanging out there. We also got an amazing sunset right from our 4th floor. We will be coming back!
- 3.5/5
I loved the location Value for price was not there. Hotel really needs to clean the carpet in the rooms and corridors. The faucet also had easy to clean but somehow missed marks. We did not feel welcome. Normally when you go to top end hotels like this, you have the staff very friendly but it was not the case for us. So literally nothing special about the hotel other than the location.
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
Wonderful hotel so close to everything. We walked around to dinner and lunch every day. The staff was great, friendly and helpful. we really enjoyed the stay and would stay here again.
- 5/5
Fantastic customer service. Very convenient location.
- 4/5
We have been returning here for a long weekend each summer for the past few years. The hotel is historic (i.e. old) and is respectably maintained given its age. However, for the rates that are charged the state of the property could and should be better. Furniture fabrics are worn, cleanliness is ok but not great, stained towels and bedding, threadbare robes, etc. Daily housekeeping was late to arrive and minimal. The hotel is rated as a AAA 4 diamond but that was not our experience; more like a 3 star at this point. It could definitely benefit from some cosmetic updating. Bar and 9-10 restaurant are very good for dinner. Location is unbeatable for downtown La Jolla and we hope to return after rooms undergo a much needed renovation.
- 5/5
It’s an excellent choice in LaJolla plus an excellent restaurant. Discreet and quiet. Not a lot of facilities.
- 5/5
Great room, terrific food in the restaurant, great location
- 4/5
Great location and friendly staff.
- 5/5
The staff at Grande Colonial was ultra friendly and willing to make our stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The hotel was well maintained, clean, and easy access to the beach and restaurants. The only request would be to have more water fountains for guests to fill up their bottles during their stay. There was one water pitcher for everyone's use at the lobby, which was convenient. We enjoyed the use of Cruiser Bikes and the option of electric bikes, as needed. Thank you very much for a very nice week in La Jolla, California.
- 5/5
The Colonial is an older style hotel. We enjoyed a great comfy bed and pillows and being in the heart of La Jolla near to the beach and contemporary art museum and the shopping. We also enjoyed The bar downstairs which is very entertaining in the evening . Thank you to the Grand Colonial for making our short stay a marvelous one . We will be back !
- 5/5
Very friendly, helpful, free parking and snacks in the room. Our original room was a little loud as deliveries were being made in the morning and they switched our room immediately. Also have items for the beach (umbrellas, chairs, etc.). Would definite go back ! Restaurant was excellent as well as was the location.
- 5/5
Very nice, well preserved old style hotel near everything on La Jolla Cove. Great staff. Oceanview rooms, but not right on water. Highly recommend!
- 5/5
Staff was friendly and beds were comfortable.
- 4/5
Other than the fact that there was a noise I could hear, it was a very nice, traditional hotel--very comfortable andwith an excellent dining room.
- 5/5
Just book it. They are great.
- 4/5
Excellent and beautiful historical property in a great location. We were a bit surprised by the quality and level of service at this lovely boutique hotel, as we would have expected better. Notably regarding responsiveness, follow thru and attitude, mostly at the front desk from what we could tell. Also, they announce up front that they are a pet free hotel, yet we saw dogs in the lobby and even in their upscale restaurant indoors. Otherwise, a wonderful place to stay.
- 5/5
We had such a great experience. The property was clean and well maintained and the staff couldn't have been better. The view from our room was amazing.

- 4/5
Very close to the beach,
- 3.5/5
Location was great. Lobby was very nice. Bathroom was huge. Extremely loud banging every morning starting at 5 AM. We were close to service areas and could hear everything.
- 3/5
Parking in La Jolla is challenging at best, especially on a holiday weekend. The valet staff at the hotel was top notch, but there is a ridiculous number of spaces blocked off by some of the most popular restaurants and you are forced to pay $20.00 for the valet parking that have commanded those spaces. It is a real rip-off by La Jolla. Also not enough handicap spaces available.
- 5/5
Great service and great view.
- 5/5
The hotel was in such a great location in La Jolla and valet parking was free! You can just step out your door and walk to amazing shops, restaurants, and see beautiful views of the ocean and all the seals and sea lions. The hotel itself was very nice too! This is the place to stay if you are visiting La Jolla!!!
- 4/5
I did not get a room in the main building and nor with view whuchbi paid for. I was initially placed in a room with a partial view, however next to a homeless van
- 4/5
A really nice hotel in an excellent location. The rooms are quite large and nice, but a bit dated. The bathrooms are updated and roomy as well. Great restaurant/bar in the lobby. The food and service were great. The doormen, restaurant servers and managers were great. Front desk and housekeeping were efficient, but not overly welcoming. Nice pool area too.
- 4/5
This property was very close to the beach, shops, and restaurants.
- 5/5
I love the vintage vibe, it looks great. Location is fantastic for walking around. The carpets could use either a deep cleaning or replacing. There is a minor odor and I think it's probably the carpets.
- 5/5
Friendly staff and a great location. Close to the beach.
- 5/5
This is the second time I’ve stayed at Grande Colonial and enjoyed my stay both times. The room is clean, robes and slippers are provided, and the best parts are that the snacks/soda/water and valet parking are included! The location is also central and you can truly relax by being able to walk to the stores/restaurants and the beach. The service is also very friendly and down to earth. I would not stay anywhere else when visiting La Jolla.
- 5/5
The water pressure is below par. That’s my only complaint
- 4/5
Great staff, very friendly & helpful. Very close to beaches. Lots of noise in our first floor room from upstairs rooms. Unable to get TV streaming to work---even with attention from a staff member. Noise alone would probably keep us from staying again. We stayed 17 nights--we know the place well!!
- 5/5
great location although the i did not spend enough time in LaJolla. However, will be back soon.
- 3/5
Disliked - hotel was comfortable but tired/old. The $50 hospitality fee was ridiculous.
- 5/5
Perfect location and great staff. Thanks for the wonderful experience!
- 5/5
The hotel is exceptional!! The staff is fabulous. We were here for 12 days and everyone made us feel like family. Within a few days of our stay they knew our names, were friendly and made us feel extremely comfortable. And as for the food, very delicious!! We will definitely be back.
- 4/5
Everything was great
- 3.5/5
Location and staff!! The room is HUGE! It’s a little tired looking. The mattress and sheets are in need of an upgrade.
- 5/5
2 flaws: 1). no heated pool and the staff were unaware and it was not fixed in time. The heated pool was one reason why i booked here. 2). Despite being upgraded (ty! btw) the floors were so creaky and i felt bad for the folks down stairs. Outside of that, I would recommend staying here for all the benefits this hotel has to offer! Felt like a resort and i most especially loved the bathroom! it felt like my personal spa
- 5/5
Great Hotel up from the beach. Valets and staff were really nice. Loved sitting by the fireplace in the lobby having my coffee. Close to shopping and dining.
- 5/5
The hotel is perfectly located to everything you need in downtown La Jolla. The staff are amazing and very quick to respond to any need. Highly recommend this hotel and plan on returning in the future.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, very friendly and helpful staff, easy parking, spacious room and decor, ocean view, snacks and water included.
- 4/5
Great location
- 5/5
This hotel had some of the nicest staff I’ve ever experienced. I would absolutely stay here again.
- 5/5
The best hotel ever! People are super nice and accommodating.
- 5/5
The room was perfect!
- 5/5
Me and my girls had a great time. Everything about the hotel is excellent
- 5/5
The location Double bed a bit small for 2 people.
- 4.5/5
expensive but worth it
- 5/5
Our first visit and it was amazing!! Delicious food, amazing staff, cozy beds, clean room… Great location! We will be back!
- 4/5
The hotel itself is a little older but has plenty of character. The beds are extremely comfortable but the shower presure isnt perhaps the best. The staff are really friendly and helpful. The pool isnt huge but is a nice place to sit. We didn't eat in the restaurant because there are so many options near by. If you can get a decent deal on price this hotel is a great option.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel with great staff. This was the last place we stayed after a 21 day fly drive and it was just what we needed. Also the added bonus of snacks and drinks in your room which were included.
- 5/5
Excellent staff and customer service.
- 5/5
I love staying at the Colonial. The staff is so kind and helpful. They have given me great food recs and are always there if needed
- 3.5/5
Room was great! The female hostess at our wine pairing dinner was extremely rude and made us uncomfortable.
- 5/5
We enjoyed staying at the Grande Colonial for 3 nights. Our room was spacious, clean, had water bottles, coffee and complimentary snacks. We had an ocean view room with an actual ocean view. The location was convenient to all of our activities. The valet parking was a big plus as well. The entire staff was extremelly responsive and friendly. We will definitely return.
- 5/5
It’s a lovely little place. Clean, comfortable and in a great location. The staff is exceptionally helpful. I will absolutely book this place again.
- 5/5
hotel location is important! hotel is nice, beautiful, clean & friendly staff. Parking valet is ideal, no worries. Love this hotel.
- 5/5
Great hotel in walking distance to see the seals and sea lions.
- 5/5
Excellent customer service from top to bottom. Everything was as advertised. Would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
The front desk staff was very helpful
- 4.5/5
All fantastic. I would stay here again.
- 5/5
Stay multiple time per year, great property!
- 5/5
This hotel is fun! A unique garden courtyard and great location for walking around La Jolla!
- 5/5
Clean, updated room in historical building. Beautiful view of the ocean.
- 5/5
Clean and friendly. Great stay.
- 5/5
Nice staff, beautiful room. Perfection!!
- 5/5
Had a wonderful stay, the room, staff, and location were exceptional!
- 3.5/5
Beautiful and perfect location! Just a couple blocks from the beach!! Amazing Restaurant! Very professional and kind staff Our Room was beautiful but the bathroom had dirt and grease on the counter and the rug was rolled up into a ball. The ONE thing I want clean is the bathroom! One of 2 beds was super firm (causes backaches at my age ). Phone kept randomly ringing. Water pipe leaking so they woke us up to see if it was us. Tough getting back to sleep.
- 5/5
Booked a room the same day. Was in La Jolla for a wedding and decided to stay the night. So happy I found the Grand Colonial. The beds are so comfy clean and had a beautiful view
- 5/5
Great hotel in great location
- 5/5
We liked the size of the room. The restaurant had amazing cappucinos.
- 5/5
Cute and cozy hotel down town La Jolla. Great bar and restaurant. Would stay again
- 4/5
We really enjoyed our stay - the amenities were great, and service helpful.
- 5/5
The service is great. I like its location.
- 5/5
Great service
- 4/5
Good hotel.
- 3/5
Room was musty. Several outlets didn’t work. This could be a cute boutique hotel. But furnishings and amenities outdated.
- 5/5
Had a wonderful stay. Loved listening to the ocean from our room. The breakfast in the restaurant was so good. We will be back.
- 5/5
Another wonderful stay.
- 4/5
Nice restaurant. Room separated from hotel building.
- 2/5
Were it not for the kind staff and good restaurant downstairs, i would give this a 1-star rating
- 5/5
Big room but no tub. Very nice place and amazing walkable dinning. Worked well for kids.
- 5/5
The hotel was very well run and we enjoyed our stay. It was so close to the shore line that we could walk to the sea lions. The room and bathroom had been updated nicely but our only complaint was the shower. The water barely came out of the shower head. It wasn't that the pressure was low it was non existent. I would also encourage you get a room not too close to the elevator. It was a little noisy at night but it is an old hotel.
- 5/5
Everybody was so friendly and helpful. All the valet guys were the best! They dropped us off and picked us up at all our restaurants in their adorable golf cart, made suggestions and gave us directions. Only had drinks and desert at the restaurant but all the food looked amazing.
- 5/5
We greatly enjoyed our stay in the Grande Colonial and everything from checkin to check out was top notch! The room was quiet, spacious, and very comfortable. We ate at the NINE TEN restaurant and had an amazing meal!
- 5/5
Have stayed here many times and they always impress. The staff is amazing.

Excellent hotel with wonderful service that is centrally located near both the shopping/restaurants and steps away from the ocean/walking path. You can see the seals and waves crashing along the walking path and even walk down to the ocean. Hotel staff are very warm, friendly. Restaurant is extremely good with great waiters. Highly recommend this property.

We were only there two nights so didn't really use the hotel facilities. The pool looked nice but was too small for lap swimming so I didn't bother. Good location for beach, dining and shopping which are all walkable.

We unexpectedly booked here after our original plans fell through. It was an unexpected blessing to say the least. We absolutely loved the hotel and the walkability to the beach and to shops/dining. Not to mention all the staff were so pleasant and accommodating to my family. Special shout out to Ronny at the valet area, he was very cool to talk with while I was waiting for my family to come down from our room. Bottom line is, if you are debating on staying here or not, you should!!

We had a wonderful stay at the Grande Colonial. It’s in a perfect location for walking, shopping and dining. We parked the car and didn’t use it again until we left two days later. The hotel is beautiful, classic and extremely comfortable. And, the service was friendly and efficient. Looking forward to our next visit.

Great Service

The area is perfect, the location is what it’s worth it. Free parking is amazing but the valet guy doesn’t even know how to drive a Tesla. The room literally was crumbling down on the walls, the noise is terrible and my view was a staff door. Terrible experience
