Reviews
The hotel reviews indicate a mix of positive and negative experiences. While the location and staff are frequently praised, cleanliness and maintenance are major areas of concern.
- Convenient location
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Poor cleanliness
- Inadequate maintenance and outdated facilities
- 5/5
Honestly much nicer than anticipated. You cannot Uber from this location FYI.

The room was basically fine, pretty much what you would expect for this class of hotel. Bed was good and in general everything though dated, seemed acceptably clean. The biggest draw was it's location to the Naval Base, which was very close by. A big complaint was the dreadful lighting. Only those bright florescent bulbs which give off that ugly, harsh white light. Not cozy or warm at all. If staying longer that 2 nights, i would have purchased decent light bulbs myself, It's a shame too because it's an easy fix. All they needed was a couple of nice lamps or incandescent-type bulbs. The breakfast was lacking even by these hotel standards. All in all it seemed expensive for what you got but I suppose you pay for the location, near the Naval Base. If you don't need to be near the Base you would be wise to look elsewhere. Lastly, and this was very disturbing, they gave my son a terrible time with checking out an hour or so late. He's a sailor and had to make 2 trips getting his things out of the room after reporting to morning duty. They first told him that he would have to pay for an extra night, because he wasn't completely out by 11:00 . When re refused they then locked his things in the room. We told them that we would call to the police if they didn't allow him to get his processions, they reluctantly unlocked the door and told him he had 15 minutes! And this was after spending thousands of dollars as he was there weeks . So much for "thank you for your service". Customer service zero at end of his extended stay and totally unnecessary. Terrible.

Hotel has outdoor room access. I was unable to sleep due to several other hotel patrons outside my room talking loudly and carrying on between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM. I was told by staff it was my responsibility to call police to control the situation. I will not stay at another Econo Lodge based on my experience.

Check in was extremely easy and the staff is AMAZING! Everyone was so helpful and friendly. Our room was very clean except for the floors so just make sure to bring your slippers or flip flops. Breakfast included waffles, yogurt, muffins, bagels, coffee, and fruit. Pleasantly surprised by that. There is plenty of parking as well. My favorite part were the drinks and snacks available in the Lobby 24/7 and at phenomenal prices. There were items available for ONE dollar which doesn't even happen at the Dollar Store. The laundry facility was clean with nice machines and they have quarters available at the Front Desk. I was very pleased with my stay here.

Nothing Hot water takes 30 minutes to get warm not even hot! People live there and are loud all night. The bed is hard as a rock and nothing is clean. Smells like mold. You better get up early if you want a shower. When I went to tell them about the water the said its an old and takes a while and checkouts at 11:00.

I do not recommend it at all and I won’t be back! Pathetic! Breakfast is a joke as well! We for some reason got out in a handicap room and it was nasty, we found roaches and took all our stuff out to the car to keep from getting infested. This place is a joke! The tv sucks and you better not expect the WiFi password.

The heater was broken and the room was freezing. The outside was also clustered with trash and people coming and going all night.

The breakfast was not has good as I have had at other hotels. The bagel was stale. The walls were thin and the alarm for the person next door woke me a few hours before I was planning to get up. There was lots of construction going on as the hotel was being upgraded.

The mattress was substandard. Only 4 inches thick and hard. Quite uncomfortable.

This Econo is a no frills lodging but it meets all the needs. Its safe and quiet.
- 5/5
Surprisedly clean. The staff was nice and professional.
- 5/5
It was a pleasant stay during my time there. It has wifi and a clean room. Plus it has a gym and a decent breakfast.
- 4/5
Rooms were nice, breakfast stinks though.
- 5/5
We have stayed here several time and have always had a great experience
- 3/5
Had just the basics
- 2/5
First of all, when I tried to lock the door with the bolt. The nail from the chain fell on the floor. No lock and bolt. The furniture was very old and dated. It was very clean in the room, at least. I noticed rust on the towel bars and the hinges that held the doors. That was not a very good look. The bed was very springy. Not comfortable at all. The walls were very thin. I could hear what was going on beside and on top of me throughout the night. Very disturbing. Not to mention, the different sirens throughout the night. It was quite loud. I put some trash from my food in the garbage can that was in the room and by morning I had a bunch of ants all over of it. That was also disturbing. I found someone's used sock on the floor. The hotel was very close to my daughter's school, Old Dominion University. Other than that, I will not be staying there, again, nor do I recommend it for anyone else.
- 3/5
Room did not have hot water
- 4/5
The TV didnt work but the room was clean
- 2/5
The lock on the door didn’t work on our room.
- 5/5
Was a good clean spot, takes care of military. 5 dollar a day cruise parking!!
- 4/5
Military friendly staff. Many spots for parking. Renovations were nice. Bathroom dirty.
- 4/5
Decent for what I needed.
- 3/5
It was just ok.
- 2/5
Motel is not in the best area. King bed was actually a “pull out” style / wire bed with a 1980’s couch. Hallways were sketchy. Front desk lady was nice however the manager was bit rude. Price is definitely high for the stay. Not the worst I’ve been to however , if another option , take the other.
- 2/5
I stayed in an accessible room. There was no hot water at any time of my stay. The shower floor was slippery and no slip-free map was provided. The ice and laundry were as far away from my room as possible, at the back corner of the property. The breakfast was less than mediocre. The staff were pleasant and helpful, but were unable to remedy these shortcomings. I recommend you stay elsewhere!
- 5/5
No thank you
- 4/5
Second time. Same as before. Just what we needed
- 4/5
For the price, not what I was expecting... I've stayed at hotels that were 100 times better than this one for less... it is very run down and needs work. The bathroom had dirt all around the edges. Bed was uncomfortable. Was worried about stuff getting stolen from my vehicle because the lighting in the parking lot would have allowed it to easily happen. I should have just slept in the bed of my pickup.
- 1/5
Horrible dirty sheets and they would not give me any clean ones. Bathroom was dirty. Ask for clean sheets . I was told just to check out there was nothing they could do and check out is what I did. I will discuss with the reservations about getting a refund.
- 1/5
Booked a recent stay while visiting my daughter at ODU. Do not recommend and would never stay at this property again. First impression was a tampon and bullet casing on the ground outside of my room. Inside room, SO damp the floor looked like it had just been mopped. The sheets were wet. In the morning all my clothes felt like they came out of the dryer mid way through the cycle. Travel size shampoo and conditioner bottle were 1/2 full and displayed next to a plastic wrapped soap. No complaints about the front dest staff.
- 1/5
This place is horrible! Aside from the fact that it smells really bad, and possibly has mold, I stayed from Sunday to Friday, just checked out this morning…. And they NEVER came in to change sheets, even though I let the front desk know! Not one time did they come to provide any time of service! Horrible place! Will never visit again!
- 4/5

Decent, clean property. Not the best, not the worst. Has decent breakfast and rooms are alright. Hotel is not quite as advertised on Expedia (no pool, etc) and if you need anything after about 3-4 p.m. the front desk can’t help you much (like towels) but still overall not a bad place to sleep and close to the naval base.
- 2/5
Oh and there were bugs in my room. I told front desk and they just said "oh, sorry"
- 1/5
DO NOT STAY HERE, RUN!!! Upon arrival the place was flooded with police on scene, there were active arrests taking place, I was told I couldn’t enter the premises. When I called to cancel the reservation due to the active situation, the manage “Dav” told me he would not refund or cancel the reservation because “there wasn’t a reason to cancel” when I told him the police wouldn’t permit anyone on the property he told me it wasn’t his problem and that he was sticking to the policy of “no refunds for same day cancellation” the police couldn’t do anything to help me and when I called Choice Hotels (their corporate office) they also told me they couldn’t overturn a charge at the location level. It is a battle that I continue to fight because it’s insane. Dav is incredibly rude, gnawingly loathsome and absent hearted. Not to mention the facility itself from the outside appears detestable.
- 1/5
Poor customer service
- 1/5
Rundown, dirty, noisy
- 1/5
Book somewhere else! The only positive was the front desk attendant at check-in, who was very nice. The hotel itself was outdated and unclean. Our room had wet, dirty hardwood floors, the door wouldn’t close unless slammed, and the towels had hair and lipstick stains on them. Housekeeping was already gone by the time we checked in (they leave at 3 PM), so with four people in the room, we were only given two towels and told we had to wait until the next day. The next day, they told us to leave our unused/dirty towels on the ground outside the door. Mind you it was pavement, not carpet as it was outside which now makes sense why their towels were so filthy. As for the “continental breakfast,” it was the bare minimum and honestly didn’t feel safe to eat. Never again.
- 1/5
Horrible didn’t clean rooms until evening
- 4/5
Clean and convenient
- 4/5
The hotel was generally nice and clean. Room was very clean. Bathroom was very clean. Everything looked very clean. Pillows were very comfy, bed wasn’t perfect, but wasn’t too bad. Overall I had an enjoyable stay, and I would stay there again.
- 3/5
Old facility. Relatively well kept but for cigarette smells from the walls and other rooms. Mediocre breakfast event for an Econolodge.
- 3/5
Not dirty but not as clean as other establishments. The “continental” breakfast doesn’t exist. I did choose my hotel because of that and it did not meet the expectations. There was no hot food like eggs, bacon, sausage.
- 1/5
This was truly the worst stay ive ever had at a hotel! It was absolutely filthy and i spent my time trying to sanitize everything. We had to sleep with nothing but a sheet because the blankets were filthy, i had to put clean sheets on myself. The ones that were on the bed had hair and dirt on them. There was food on the tables, floors and walls. The chairs in the room were nasty and filthy! The alarm clock and tv remote were both broke. I had to sign a paper saying if we in the room we'd be charged a $250 cleaning fee and the room smelled horrible, with cigarette smoke. I came home and now have pink eye and an itchy rash. I was told i would be charged the full fees if i backed out of the reservation and now im being told no one can do anything about any of it.
- 5/5
Wifi peak, room peak, service peak
- 5/5
We have stayed here 3 times and they have never disappointed! The only issue this time was that we asked for extra towels at check in and never got them and even asked when the housekeeper came around and still never got them. But otherwise we will not stay anywhere else.
- 1/5
This place is a dump. Furniture was missing from the room. The lady at the desk was not helpful. Once we saw the room, we didn’t stay.
- 5/5
This is our second time staying here and we love it. Would not stay anywhere else.
- 4/5
It was alright
- 4/5
Bed had some marks so did the towels
- 4/5
I am military staying there because I deployed today Monday 23 of September. I wish that they had a shuttle to take people to the naval base. Restaurant to far and when I called they said they were closed by. But all in all good place to stay
- 1/5
I was supposed to stay 4 nights, we only ended up staying 2 because after even the 1st night me and my husband started to feel sick while in the room. After the 2nd night, we were really feeling sick. Coughing, mucus, body aches, headaches, and slight fevers & all of that lasted for 2 whole days after we left the hotel. We think there is either a mold problem or something in the ac. The floors were filthy, the towels and sheets had visible stains on them. Would not recommend.
- 3/5
You get what you pay for. We stayed 3 nights and the room was not cleaned once, nor did I see any housekeeping while we were there. Property is under renovations, but the rooms could still be cleaned.
- 1/5
What stay? They canceled my prepaid reservation via hotels.com because i arrived at 230AM after their "audit." They said i was a no-show. They wanted me to pay again plus more money before i could get a room. This is at 230AM. Said I should have called. I already paid. I said no thanks. Went to hampton down the road who said they have same policy. They wanted to charge me $$$ Saturday rate on a Friday night. I slept fine in the car. Got "courtesy" refund from hotels. Forget these 3. Just stay at Fairfield.
- 5/5
Very kind staff, clean room, good beds
- 5/5
Chill area. Staff is super friendly and helpful
- 4/5
A little sketchy but close to the Naval base.
- 5/5
was great
- 5/5
The best in Norfolk so far.
- 3/5
It is a good hotel to sleep and go. In the middle of a remodel andnwhat was remodeled in our room was of poor quality. The bed was extremely comfortable. The tub had new tile on an old tub that needed new fixtures and to be re-glazed. So if you just want a place to rest to visit your sailor then it does the job.
- 1/5
I need a refund this place was disgusting tub was dirty, paint chipping in ceiling and mirowave was burned up.request another claim.they were book.
- 1/5
I always take cleaning wipes with me when I go anywhere but I ran out and had to finish cleaning with soap and a washcloth. Bathroom outlets didn't work, there was a standing lamp but it wasn't plugged into anything, the phone wasn't plugged in, and when I walked to the front desk to tell them my refrigerator didn't work she said she would have someone come in the morning but that never happened. When I asked for a different room I was told they were booked full. Only good part was I saw no bugs. I did take pictures and will be sending them to the manager there.
- 5/5
We did have an issue with our first room as they are renovating the rooms. Went to the front desk and asked for a different room and they were able to find us one and even kept us on the first floor (even though it did not matter if we were on second floor). Location was great as it is near everything we needed being there for return to home port for my daughter’s fiancé’s ship.
- 5/5
The floors and mirrors were dirty.
- 5/5
Clean rooms. Super convenient to the Navy base. Awesome AC on a couple of scorching days!
- 3/5
Property was very basic. Clean enough. Bed was comfortable. The shower had good hot water availability but low water pressure. Breakfast was ok with the only hot options being the self serve waffles and coffee hidden in a cabinet.
- 2/5
Not a good experience. I asked to be moved twice due to room been dirty and liking toilet water tank. Property is under renovation.you paid for practicality not luxury.
- 2/5
First time staying at an Econolodge Hotel. You paid for practicality not luxury. I wanted to stay close to the naval base. This property is under renovation, so I experienced a lot of noise. I asked to be moved twice; the first room was not clean, and the second room had a broken toilet water tank. It seems that they don’t clean the floors either. No a good experience☹️
- 1/5
Don’t waste your money!! I requested an ADA room when I made my reservation. Upon check-in, I was given a room on the second floor- I asked if there were elevators and there are not so I referred to my reservation request. I was then given a room a room on the first floor. Room was in the middle of the building, yet the ADA ramps are at the end! Ok, I dealt with the extended walk in order to get my mother to the room. Get inside and there is so much furniture, maneuver a wheelchair is almost impossible! The room “looked” clean, but upon further inspection, I noticed a stain on the sheets on one of the beds, the faucet at thw sink was broken and only had one good working handle, and the tub was absolutely disgusting!! Black stained, large rust spots, this room should never be offered to a guest! I had to put towels on the tub bottom just to use it and pray I didn’t get some type of fungus! Never again!
- 3/5
Rooms are old. Half the lights/lamps did not work. Bathtub floor was slippery and unsafe. Bed was fine.
- 4/5
Toilet didn’t function very well. Hot and cold water at sink were backwards and sink handles were not very clean.
- 3/5
It was under construction so I understood not everything was the way it should be, but it didn't even look like the floor had been swept and management didn't take care of a noise complaint for several hours.
- 2/5
Put in room with no water, waited 2 hours to get back on..
- 3/5
Nice place
- 4/5
Property needs some TLC. There is a pallet of tile in the parking lot, never saw anyone working with it over a 4 night stay.
- 1/5
The room was not clean, there was mold in multiple places, cracked and disrepair on the walls, the tub had black stains on the floor and there was pink mold in the grout, there was hair in the bathroom in multiple places and dirt that had been swept into corners but not actually cleaned out.
- 2/5
The property needs to be seriously renovated. You can see it around the property that it has need of repairs.
- 2/5
Breakfast was horrible. They don’t even have bread. Brought cereal only on demand.
- 3/5
👍
- 5/5
Tv remote don’t work had to turn the channel by hand
- 2/5
Tired dirty room
- 1/5
Our stay was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! The room was very outdated and dirty with holes in the walls! We stayed because we got in late after a 5 hour drive and we was leaving for our cruise this morning! We couldn’t even shower because the tub wasn’t clean. The front desk staff seemed very illiterate about our concerns and questions we ask!
- 3/5
Very poor room maintenance. Need to pour some money into this place.
- 5/5
Room was clean but the room had no remote for the tv. So we to turn the channel by hand
- 5/5
Stay was nice and the staff were excellent!
- 2/5
The pictures of the room were not indicative of what we found. The king size bed was more like a double-wide queen bed. The bed was very hard, the tv was very small, and the room looked a lot larger in the pictures than in person.
- 5/5
Decent for the price. The staff was impeccable.
- 3/5
The environment is ok, not alot of trouble around the hotel. Overall, an ok room if you're trying to find a place to stay under the budget. I hope these rooms will be renovated ASAP.
- 2/5
The value for what i paid is appropriate. Usually I dont mind the basics but this place was a little sketch. The room was rated nonsmoking but if that is so, the nonsmoking went into effect maybe 3 months ago because it smelled like cigarette smoke. It was clean just stinky. We had a room closer to the front and could hear ALL the traffic ALL night long.
- 2/5
Very noisy next to Norfolk terminal and lots of street noise from Hampton blvd
- 1/5
When we checked in, there was hair on the shower wall, the floors had hair piles on them, the sheets on one of the beds were dirty, and the soap at the sink had not been replaced. The used soap from the people before us, was placed back in the wrapper and left there for us to use!! I was so disgusted, we got a refund for the room and checked into another hotel down the street.
- 3/5
Room not clean
- 4/5
There was hair also on the bathroom walls.
- 1/5
Room needed a deep clean. Floors were absolutely filthy. From the reviews I’ve read, the excuse will be that they are in the middle of a renovation. That is no excuse for the rooms to not be clean. Planned on staying 2 nights, but only stayed one due to the condition of the lack of cleanliness. Hotel clerk didn’t even bother to ask the reason we were checking out early. The attached pictures don’t do justice to the filth of the room.
- 2/5
The hotel in poor condition door did not seal on bottom. Overall hotel condition not average for the cost.
- 5/5
Quiet place peace
- 4/5
Property under renovation so things will get better.
- 1/5
The reception was pleasent, however the property is extremely dirty. The bedsheets and furniture was stained. I asked for the linens to be changed and was informed that there was no housekeeping on staff after 12pm.
- 1/5
So filthy we slept fully clothed on towels we spread on the bed, toilet seat was connected to the toilet, all floors were sticky and gross, lampshades stained, tub dirty, chain lock on the door was barely connected to the wall. DO NOT STAY HERE!
- 4/5
Place was a little dirty
- 4/5
Good location; good services; good pricing
- 4/5
My home away from home for a day could have been a little better with comfort the couch was outdated and I’m not sure but the sheets looked old
- 1/5
It was the worse experience!! Please remove this hotel from your list! Anyone visiting the Norfolk area, don’t stay there!
- 2/5
Cleaning is an essential part for a hotel to be at the top. They had well stained towels, dirty floor, stained toilet paper, flies inside the room. This hotel needs remodeling because despite it has a good location.
- 2/5
Well-you get what you pay for. The motel was super convenient for what we needed to do in Norfolk for one day. And, since it was a weekend, rates were ridiculous at other places. The lodge was about $130.00 less than other hotels in this area. Since we only needed a sleep break, we thought it would be fine. The place was old (we knew that) but it was clean. No complaints there. However, all evening and night the conversations and smokers and visitors in the parking lot kept us up. The walls are evidently paper thin. At 3:00 a.m. we gave up, packed up and left since sleep was impossible due to the never ending conversations and smokers hanging in the parking lot visiting with each other. No one was rowdy, but the outdoor get together never ended.
- 2/5
Door was difficult to open. Laundry area smelled like urine.
- 1/5
No recomendable so dirty
- 1/5
It had mold in the room, the air conditioner dis not work properly as the air felt wet, the site leave you to believe they have a pool
- 5/5
Nice
- 4/5
The front desk staff member was very friendly and knowledgeable about the Norfolk area. Older facility, but well maintained. Clean & comfortable.
- 2/5
The only things I liked about this place was the location and the staff. It was convenient to our purpose for visiting the area. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. However, it needs some major updates, and better cleaning practices. There was sand in our tub which tells me it wasn't cleaned before our arrival. The toilet barely worked. The hot water in the sink barely existed...the list goes on
- 1/5
Very very dirty rooms. Checked out of all three rooms early because it was SO DIRTY and so uncomfortable. Don’t risk it with this one.
- 2/5
Staff was great. Room was not great. Location was perfect.
- 1/5
The property was conveniently located near Naval Statiok Norfolk where we were visiting. But the hotel was so disgusting and dirty that we left immediately after we checked out. My kids took two steps into our room and their feet were filthy. You could see the dirt all over the floor. The tub in the bathroom was black. Very disappointed and wasn’t offered a refund.
- 5/5
Needs some updates but overall pleased with property.
- 2/5
Sheets and towels appeared to be clean. Floor, though, were so dirty. It was evident by the mold and dirt built up, that it had been a long time since they had been cleaned. They were sticky and turned the bottom of my white socks black. Found someone else's used bandaids behind faucet handle when I turned on the water. So gross! Also, it would be nice if the shower got warm.
- 4/5
It was cheap for area. It would have been better if the floors had been cleaned better. I’d stay here again. The staff was absolutely GREAT!!!!
- 3/5
Room has smell and the tiles in the restroom are old and not so clean
- 3/5
The fellow behind the desk was very friendly. The hotel could use some work. The room was clean and comfortable. On the negative side, there was no microwave in the room, as had been advertised. I called about it, and was told this had happend due to COVID, not all rooms had them anymore but there was one in the lobby I could use. The water in the sink didn’t have much pressure. And both the toilet and the tub faucet were constantly running, they could not be turned off. Only one channel was available on the TV.
- 3/5
Ok
- 4/5
My only problem was dirty sheets. They had hair and white stain on them.
- 1/5
WE DID NOT STAY, WE LEFT!
- 4/5
Could see the paint starting to let loose in the bathroom area.....
- 2/5
The check in process was easy, but the room was less that desirable. Upon entering the room I noticed two large spots on the floor near the bed, garbage on the floor on the side of the bed, the bathroom had two dead bugs on the floor, the shower had hair in it, and the toilet paper rolls had large red spots on them. On top of that it rained and the entire entrance of the hotel was flooded about 5 inches deep.
- 4/5
Very nice property with attentive staff
- 1/5
Rooms were not clean, I did not expect the outside entryway to room. It also smelled of urine
- 5/5
Good stay. Clean towels. We mainly just slept and we’re out sight seeing the whole two days we were there.
- 1/5
Floors where disgusting, like movie theatre floors, sticky, dirty. Looked like there were never moved or cleaned. They were wooden. Hotel gave an excuse about being near the water. They offered to come mop them next day but we were checking out. Thought about leaving and getting a refund but all hotels were booked.
- 3/5
Its close to Norfolk Naval Base.
- 1/5
The room was dirty it was not clean food was left wasn’t even fresh
- 3/5
The floor got wet and when I cleaned up the water the towel turned black. The whole floor had not been mopped in a long time. Since we are still in Covid, this made me feel like my safety was not a concern.
- 5/5
The beds in my room were brand new, the dumpster that was outside of the room was filled with mattresses that were being hauled away but overall the place was clean, warma nd friendly. The staff were wonderful. Do yourself a favor and remember you booked an Econo Lodge not the Ritz Carlton so if you want a mint on your pillow and a complimentery bathrobe to take with you this aint the place. The base is very close by and if the Navy Lodge is booked solid this place is a great alternative. I plan on staying here again when I am in Norfiolk.
- 2/5
Room floor dirty, sink drained slow due to partial plugged up, Microwave old & needs replacing, front door to Lobby beat up /old/needs replacing/...old concrete sidewaks need power wash, bathtub missing anti-slip strips to prevent falls, toilet tank mounted crooked, bedsheets need to be replaced (had stains despite washing) . Very disappointed.
- 3/5
How any place could charge nearly 200 a night for such crap is beyond me! I would have been better off staying in my car!
- 1/5
Disgusting place. Room wasn’t clean from the tables, bathroom, floor, refrigerator, sink had soap scum/toothpaste. Floor wasnt swept or mopped.
