Reviews
The hotel offers stunning ocean views and convenient beach access, with friendly staff and well-maintained outdoor pools. However, guests frequently complain about dirty rooms, malfunctioning appliances, and poor water quality. Some also express disappointment with the restaurant's food and limited hours.

Our bed and pillows were great and I slept very well. The hotel was built in 1984 and it’s in need of major renovation and maintenance. There are no USB charging areas in the room and nowhere to charge our plug in hybrid. The decor is late 80’s, early 90’s. I didn’t think that it was worth the price for the lack of amenities in our room.
- 5/5
Beach views and balcony are outstanding. We enjoy the separate bedroom and 2 bathrooms in a room is very helpful. Our favorite place to stay at the beach!
- 3/5
I think they are focused more on look of the front property and entrance rather than the rooms and the amenities for the guest there is no blow dryer or any extras of anything. If you needed towels they made you go down to the front desk for when it cost they should’ve been a little more focused on the guest. My light above sink didn’t work. They didn’t seem to care. The jacuzzi was not turned on. Pool is very nice and clean. However there are no towels for the pool. The ones they had were in the basket for days and didn’t look clean
- 4/5
Every room had an Ocean view and and Intercoastal view.
- 5/5
Gracias excelente servicio.
- 4/5
Liked private beach, heated pool. Would have liked a better coffee pot. The one in room 513 needed to be cleaned or replaced. Also there was lots of hair accumulated in the indoor pool from other swimmers that stuck on hands while swimming. Liked veranda
- 4/5
Unfortunately, the upkeep of the resort is not well-maintained. Upon entering our room, we immediately noticed the broken balcony furniture, a dirty floor, and a broken headboard on our bed. Additionally, the hot tub by the outdoor pool was broken, and when asked, the staff had no idea when it would be repaired. Both the Tiki Bar and the on-site restaurant had odd operating hours. If the upkeep of the hotel improves, we would consider returning for another visit.

Todo estaba muy sucio y la habitación era muy pequeña
- 5/5
Beach view
- 4/5
Room needs a good deep cleaning. Floor was really dirty. Sticky. Caked on dust on interior doors and floor boards. Found pills and empty cans under bed.
- 4/5
Great location and overall nice place to stay. The unit we stayed in needed to clean the floors better. Also the sliding glass door was very hard to open and close to the balcony.
- 4/5
What a beach view and wonderful access to the beach itself. The staff was great - very friendly - and anything missing in the suite, they were quick to bring it up. The restaurant is not open past breakfast on Monday and Tuesday, and it's just as well. The food was pricey and was only ok to not so good. Fortunately it was easy to get deliveries and there are lots of good places close by. The TIKI bar never opened during our Monday - Thursday stay. The jets weren't working in the common hot tub. We had a broken closet door - not a big deal. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. Parking was easy. The shower can be a little challenging to get in and out of. Overall, the family had a great time. My wife and I shared the bedroom with our daughter and our sons slept on the pullout in the living room. Loved having two toilets. Worked well for a family of five.
- 5/5
The view on both sides of the resort was truly spectacular
- 3/5
Bar and restaurant were open for brunch short staffed. King size bed mattress was hard and lumpy needs to be changed out. Rooms only cleaned upon request. The beach view was fantastic. It's the first week of June. Gotta drive in town to find a place to eat. Island closed down at 10 o'clock usually. I guess it was too early in June
- 3/5
Property should be updated, mattress & linens. Friendly staff.
- 3/5
Not good - If you needed towels or toilet paper you had to go to the front desk and get it yourself. The restaurant was only open until 11am, then nothing for the rest of the day/evening. No food or drinks at all, and there is nothing in walking distance. And one morning when they were open, they were out of everything - eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, and cheese - all they had were pancakes and bread. If you want chairs or unbreallas at the beach you have to pay for them, and they are expensive! $50 A DAY for 2 chairs and an umbrella!! Luckily we drove so we brought out own, but if you fly in you don't have any other options.
- 3/5
Our first room was a timeshare with most of the storage locked. No place to unpack bags. The air conditioning didn’t work and we were moved to a new room which was much better the next day. I still don’t know what the resort fee was for other than the pool, path to the beach and parking. Looks more like a way to disguise the true cost of the room in the booking services. The Tiki bar wasn’t open and the afternoon arrival had no evening restaurant available. We liked the area but since they couldn’t assure me that I could get the second room I doubt I would go back.
- 3/5
Tiki Bar was closed. Cafe only open for breakfast. All but one ice machine were broken. 9 floors and only 1 floor had a working ice machine. Staff seemed bothered when asked for things.
- 3/5
This property is very dated. You will feel claustrophobic in the bathrooms due to extremely low ceilings. The bedroom is located in the front of the unit which makes for lots of noise from people walking by and cars in the parking deck. It is ocean front with indoor and outdoor pools and good beach access.
- 3/5
The property is older and worn down. The staff does not seem happy to be there. I will not be going back. My room was clean but I had to turn off the AC. It smelled musty and yucky.
- 5/5
Somethings where run down and in need of repairs but staff was quick to fix any issues.
- 3/5
Quiet, clean and relaxing vibes.
- 5/5
The location is perfect, but the resort price is higher than the amenities and services offered at the property.
- 2/5
Our unit was so outdated and needs a refresh. just a new coat of paint would help. Unusual odor in the place and would not recommend this unit. Will likely not stay at this resort again based on the condition of this unit.
- 5/5
I was looking for a nice relaxing weekend to melt the stress away and this was the place!
- 5/5
Have stayed here several times maybe 4-5. Also have stayed down the street. Shell island continued to be our go too. You have a great location, with no neighbor to one side making your own prib.
- 5/5
The staff was very kind and our condo was clean and beautiful. We loved the being able to see the ocean through all of the windows! The indoor and outdoor pool were amazing and the beach was very accessible and in a great area! Definitely would recommend!
- 3/5
Didn’t get breakfast There was a giant puddle of water that led to our door and the people were reving their engines at 11pm in the parking garage and being really loud
- 5/5
What a fantastic resort!! Location is awesome! Room was perfect! Staff could not be nicer! Parking super easy. Beach is gorgeous and they had a nice pool area as well. Can’t wait to return!
- 4/5
Always love Wrightsville Beach!!! Best NC Beach!!! The BED…way to firm. The Holiday Inns pillow top beds are much more comfortable.
- 5/5
Friendly staff, clean rooms, impeccable views!
- 5/5
It is a beautiful place to bring your family for vacation, we spend hours walking the beach looking for shark teeth and the 1000's of sea shells. We bring our family here every year. We love it!
- 5/5
Best beach view, clean good spacious rooms!
- 4/5
This property is in a beautiful location, sitting right on the beach and every room has an excellent view of the ocean and the beach. This is an old property and it shows its age. in my view it’s time to upgrade it, however, because every room is owned by individual owners, it’s up to the owners to choose whether to upgrade it or not. All in all it wasn’t bad but when you are paying over $450 a night you kind of expect a little better than ”not bad”, but I guess you’re paying for the view and the convenience of being right on the beach. Staff is really nice and helpful, having parking is really convenient. Having indoor and outdoor pools is also really nice, though don’t expect to have a relaxing time by the pool, there are bunch of screaming kids at the pool all the time.
- 3/5
Could not walk barefoot on tile floor. Hair in shower when we arrived. (we had to clean bathroom before we would use it) Used to be soo nice. needs a little attention now!
- 2/5
Not great…
- 3/5
Not very clean.
- 3/5
The room was clean and the view was great but the restaurant was only open 3 hours a day for a couple days. The resort is the last one at a dead end street and you have to go to town for anything to eat or drink. The restaurant staff was great though.
- 5/5
we had a great stay
- 3/5
The condo I stayed in was in desperate need of an update. In top of the furniture being old and worn out, the bed sounded like a spring was going to come through at any moment. The kitchen didn’t have any silverware. The TV did not have a remote. Hopefully I just had an old unit and others have been updated
- 4/5
Since we were visiting in the beginning of May the restaurant and pool bar was not open. There was a small snack shop near front desk, which was not stocked well.
- 2/5
Great location! Horrible maintenance. Dirty floors. We left a night earlier not to sleep in the horrible mattress , pillows and bedding. Floor mats by the bed were put under the bed because they were filthy!!
- 5/5
My only complaint was the furniture in our room. The room nice and clean but the couch was filthy, we wouldn’t sit on it. So many stains. That couch is the only negative thing I could say about the resort. Now I wish I had took a picture of it.
- 5/5
Perfect!
- 4/5
Great view!
- 4/5
The location and beach views were exceptional. The surrounding area was very nice. Parking was easy. The hotel was reasonably quiet. The building was old and while clean was in need of an update. The water pressure was poor and the cheap toliet paper was so bad we went out and purchased our own.
- 2.5/5
Great location and the room layout was very good. Furniture in the suite was very dated. The sleeper sofa in the sitting room was so old and uncomfortable that we could not sit on it. The room also smelled of stale smoke, possibly in the air conditioning vents from days of old.
- 2/5
Sofa and chairs were broken and very uncomfortable. Room was 76 degrees. Room was run down. We left 1 day early
- 5/5
Love the hotel and location. The room is pretty small. Amazing views. Restaurant and bar wasn’t the best.
- 4/5
The restaurant, went for breakfast they had no eggs, no potatoes, The bill was very high for the not so good food, and we waited over an hour to be served
- 4/5
Had breakfast at the restaurant waitstaff is not very attentive and food is luke warm otherwise decent. The floor in our room is dirty it obviously wasn't mopped and there isn't enough towels stocked. Everything else has been very nice.
- 5/5
The eating out options were not displayed.
- 4/5
The beach and the view from our balcony were spectacular, our room layout in general worked well for the three of us, the staff were all pleasant to work with and the late check-out by an hour was much appreciated. We did have to ask for more supplies like towels and toilet paper, and we were pretty disappointed that the jets in the hot tub weren't working - I have arthritis and it would have been a nice way to end the day at the beach. Overall, we would love to come back to the Shell Island Resort again.
- 5/5
The property was so clean and decorated so nicely. It was easy to get to and had everything we could want or need.
- 4/5
The restaurant was better than in previous years. The suites have become a bitvrun down.
- 5/5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The ocean and sound views were excellent and the staff was great. The on-site restaurant was very good and convienent. The only negative was the furniture in our suite was not very comfortable. Other than that, we loved our visit and would stay there again.
- 4/5
Staff was very friendly. Room was clean but surprised to find NO hand soap, no coffee, no hair dryer nothing to wash dishes with if used...none of the little small things typically found in hotel much less a "resort" would have packed all of those if I knew. Tv in bedroom did not work properly at all Apps were inaccessible on both tvs.
- 3/5
The beach view was amazing. The room was clean. Everything was outdated even the coffee machine. The was sofa was dusty. The balcony chairs had poop on them. The beach was the best part, right outside the hotel, so quiet and peaceful not overly crowded. It was cute.
- 5/5
Good
- 4/5
Our negatives were that there was hair in the bathroom sink, shower and on the bed. The half bath sink was stopped up and the bed slept terrible. The mattress definitely needs to be replaced. The bedroom only had one lamp and we were able to charge our phones due to having extended charging cords. All in all we would stay again as the things that we had issues with weren’t enough to ruin our trip.
- 5/5
The location was the best. Nothing
- 1/5
The room did not have functioning AC. The bed was old terrible and floor was dirty. We were moved the second day to an other room but only compensated for a miserable sleepless night, with a coupon for a lunch in their 3 star restaurant, which was out of several items on the menu. Neither of the rooms resemble pictures on their or third party websites. The units are individually owned and both had furniture that had seen better days or decades. It is a shame as it is located on a lovely stretch of beach.
- 4/5
The location is beautiful. I believe every room is the same layout. They’re small suites but very adequate for two people. Each room has a balcony. Our room (202) was very clean. It’s an older resort that is definitely showing its age. Our bathroom had metal trim around the door and the bottom of one side was rusting badly. When we stepped into the elevator, the rug on the floor was filthy and several edges were chewed up and missing. I was shocked to see such neglect. The windows in our room were large and afforded a wonderful view of the ocean but had not been cleaned well. There was a small kitchenette with a small fridge, a small cooktop, a microwave and a drip-type coffeemaker. I love good strong coffee in the morning so I made sure to bring my own coffee grounds and creamer. The resort gives you two coffee filters, one small package of coffee and two packages of powdered creamer and sugar. I was very glad I brought my own coffee fixings from home. The restaurant there was adequate. They had several tables with umbrellas outside which was nice. We had breakfast and the omelet, bacon and French toast were fine. Nothing outstanding but tasty. The coffee was lukewarm so we requested some that was hot and they put a fresh pot on. Every employee we encountered was friendly and helpful. The price was less than many other places to stay in the area. My husband would like to stay there again. I’m hoping we can try another resort that is not quite so run down.
- 4/5
The location Needs better sofa bed and cleaning baseboards
- 3/5
The pools, ocean front and view from our balcony were beautiful. The front desk and restaurant staffs were friendly and accommodating. Our rental unit, however was outdated and dirty (hall maintenance closet full of dust). The last night of our stay we turned the tv on for the first time to find the picture scrambled, which the tech staff was unable to fix. What was upsetting is upon checkout the next morning the manager questioned me about it as if we had broken it, and also made some unprofessional comments about the technician. It put a damper on the whole stay.
- 5/5
The property was beautiful and the beach was uncrowded and very clean. That said shower water pressure was weak, bed is very hard in the king suite, and the pool bar was not open all weekend.
- 5/5
We love that the beach is just a step away
- 5/5
My family and I had a great time! Everyone was so kind and helpful. Definitely would book again!
- 4/5
A bit dated but overall nice. The weather wasn’t the best we’re going to give it another shot.
- 5/5
Easy access to beach.
- 4/5
Great location with the easy beach access. Rooms were nicely decorated. The views were spectacular! There were issues that required multiple phone calls for maintenance.
- 5/5
Beautiful room and property
- 2.5/5
Ocean front room, bed was extremely comfortable, Was not able to watch any movies in the bedroom because the televisions were outdated, non functional remotes. Paying premium prices for two nights, this suites should have had better streaming tvs. My husband and I were very disappointed.
- 2/5
Very happy with the size of the room. I was told that the pull out couch would be turned down and made with blankets and pillows (I requested) when we arrived it was not. Upon our arrival at the room we were assigned the door was propped open, and a wet paint sign was hanging on the door frame. As we are standing there in the corridor, calling the front desk, to inquire about it, maintance walks into our room, and looked at us oddly. He spoke with the front desk on my personal cell. The room smelled strongly of paint and was very humid and hot. It took the entire weekend to cool down, the smell never went away. The next morning (Saturday) at 7 am we were still In Bed sleeping, and our room door just opens, someone with a key card opened it, no knock nothing and they walk in. I said “hello?” From the bedroom, and whomever it was stops walking and is silent- then says, I didn’t know this room would be occupied. And left. The coffee pot is a dinosaur, and needs to be upgraded. We had to go to the front desk several times to ask for coffee and creamer. There wasn’t adequate supplies in the room (coffee, creamer, filters) Only two bath towels were provided, for our group. This was an expensive stay, for so many unpleasant and concerning issues.
- 5/5
Proximity
- 4/5
The best part about this resort were the spectacular views of the ocean from the room. Nice large windows and sliding glass door to the balcony were the best feature of the room by far. Hotel is dated, but location and access to the beach was great. Although we stayed only 2 nights, it would have been nice to have housekeeping do our rooms and give us fresh towels at the least. Basic amenities like bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash would have been nice considering the price per night they charge. Regardless, we still enjoyed our stay and enjoyed the beach as much as we could.
- 4/5
View was perfect
- 5/5
Nice
- 4/5
Restaurant food quality could be improved..
- 4/5
Beds were uncomfortable
- 5/5
Nice and quiet area. If you’re looking to “spring break” you’ll want to do that somewhere else.
- 5/5
Disappointed that the beach chairs and umbrellas were not complimentary. $50 per day!!!!
- 4/5
Great beach view. The rooms were spacious. The room was clean. The only problem was the shower drained very slowly.
- 4/5
View was amazing. Room clean and comfortable. Very nice and relaxing.
- 3/5
The room was okay, nothing fancy. Bed was decent, room was recently painted and smelled like it. I had read reviews before we went, so I knew what to expect. Water pressure in shower is minimal, but for an "island" to be expected. It was clean enough, but there was old hair and stains around the room. We didn't use room service of any kind during our time here, but you do have to ask for it if you want your room cleaned during your stay. We were told the rooms are privately owned now, but yet there is a $25 resort fee every night you stay. The restaurant is a very small place, sitting maybe 20 and bar maybe 5. Everything was overpriced there for what you get. It was not open 75% of the time we stayed. The hot tub jets didn’t work. We had no issues with our check in or out, which was good. Parking is right on the property which is nice. Overall, we wouldn't stay again, but the ocean view and straight walk to the beach/ocean was great. The $25 resort fee is ridiculous as this is definitely not a resort of any kind, especially if rooms are privately owned. Glad it's cheaper than other actual resorts I've stayed at. You get nothing for that fee, no waters in the room. Beach/pool towels were never restocked in the towel area and you had to ask for them. We were "off season" but for the restaurant and bar to be closed and so small, never any beach chairs set up, amenities are not up to pair to charge a fee.
- 4/5
To be able to just wake up and view the sunrise from your balcony was 10 stars.
- 4/5
Fantastic ocean beach view from the balcony! Could see Wilmington buildings a few miles to the South. Shell Island Resort is at the end of the beach road! Walk the beach 1.5 miles northward the the ocean "river" flowing into the salt water marsh...Amazing!
- 4.5/5
Absolutely loved the view. Loved the 1/2 bath. Loved the table and the spaciousness. The bed was very comfortable. I would definitely stay here again. Location was great. The beach was absolutely beautiful and clean. Loved the fact that there were 2 pools. Wish there would have been a second hot tub. Several of the light fixtures didn't work. Would have been nice to have teabags with our coffee service. It would have been nice to have at least 2 matching mugs and not melamine. I prefer a microwavable ceramic or porcelain mug. The couch upholstery needed cleaning. The rooms didn't have much of a soundbarrier. We were awaken by our neighbors arguing late in the night. The bathtub was very deep; which made it harder for an older short person to access.
- 5/5
No restaurant no bar
- 3/5
Unfortunately both our room and our son and daughter in law’s rooms were not clean. The bathroom floors had hair on them, underneath the beds were dirty and furniture was stained. The views are amazing and the staff are helpful and friendly but the rooms definitely should be cleaned better.
- 4/5
Amazing location, fair hotel, nice view! Very enjoyable!
- 5/5
Rooms are very spacious and all have an ocean view. Very clean. Would recommend.
- 3/5
Great view and great for walking, but there's a lot of room for improvement. It's in the name: resort. And our expectations were not met. We were disappointed unfortunately. We were expecting the restaurant to be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which it wasn't. Fresh seafood offered. Not. It was really windy and would've been great if there were cabanas that we could have rented to block the wind. So we ended up renting what they had along with the sorriest beach towels I have ever seen. It was more the size of a dish towel. We expected to drop our stuff and not have to leave the hotel until we were checking out. We had to go to the grocery store so we would have breakfast items and leave for lunch & dinner as the restaurant menu was poor in our opinion. No dishwasher, and no dishdrain to allow the dishes to dry. Suggestion is to make the outdoor bar more for the "junk and fried food" and have the indoor space be more upscale. We wanted to rent bikes, but there weren't any to rent. We were given a number to call and the company would deliver them. Then, we decided not to do that because we didn't see how we would navigate biking when there wasn't a dedicated bike lane without cars, people, or dogs to navigate around. The best part was the views and being able to walk on the beach. That was it. If you are looking for a true resort experience where you don't have to do anything, this one might not live up to your expectations. It didn't for us, unfortunately.
- 5/5
Top notch experience. Easy intake, friendly staff, room was so unique. Great spot on the beach where the resort is located. Could not ask for more.
- 3/5
Beach view and location were great and front desk lady helping us was really nice. Unfortunately the conditions of the room were very sub par, especially for 350 a night. The room was very outdated. The night stand had some sort of brown stain on the top and a giant red stain all the way down the night stand, extending to the mattress cover and floor. the TV stand was torn up and looked like something had chewed up the wood. the ceiling was peeling in the bathroom. There was a stain on the dining room table and on the bathroom counter top. the bulb in the bedroom lamp didn't work. the latch on the balcony door didn't work. The wall in the bedroom was a giant mirror wall that had rust stains underneath. All-in-all, not a very nice room for the rates. We were offered the ability to move rooms, but a member of my party had food poisoning and did not want the hassle. They said they were not able to compensate anything since we booked 3rd party and not directly through the site. They tried to make things better by offering a food voucher which helped. The staff were great and definitely want to help, but the conditions of the room we stayed in were simply unacceptable.
- 3/5
The beach views are definitely the best part of this place. Overall, the hotel itself is about average in quality.
- 5/5
Borrowed wine glasses from the front desk and used a frying pan to toast pastries. Parking deck is excellent with plenty of covered parking. We stayed prior to main season so pool bar was closed and restaurant was operating under reduced hours. Each condo is privately owned and furnished. If you have the opportunity, ask to see a few condos that might be available so you can choose what suits you best. Would stay here again.
- 2/5
The catering facilities closed for the early part of the week and no bar fortunately we had transportation so we could purchase sustenance elsewhere. It would have been a difficult walk to nearest shops if you weren’t able bodied. Everything was rickety doors wonky locks not working, plug sockets loose and my daughter in law got locked in the bedroom as door handle didn’t work. Fortunately for out via the adjoining bathroom. But this fire safety hazard. Skirting’s were visibly dusty. My husband wrote you a review advising similarly you responded saying tell us what room it is and we will fix it! Do you really expect guests to do your quality inspections? Not good customer service! The entrance lobby is deceiving as that is nice compared with bedroom presentation The saving grace to some extent was the pool area and the view of the beach.
- 4/5
We enjoyed our stay nice location. It was nice to lay on the beach with no loud partying going on.
- 4/5
There were no sheets, pillows or blankets for the pull out sofa
- 3/5
Need renovations
- 3/5
Windows was dirty sofa was dirty and dining room chairs. View was awesome. Not sure i would stay again.
- 4/5
Great view of the ocean, property was dated and needs to be updated .
- 4/5
It was an okay stay. Room amenities we felt were not all there. We only had 2 shower towels and 2 hand towels for 3 guests. No sponge for doing dishes. Always had to ask for pool or beach towels. We had a great time but water pressure was terrible.
- 5/5
I thought this place was amazing. Especially for the price. The beach is very private, while the location is not far from the main highway (easy to get to). The rooms were very clean, with great quality furniture and bedding. The view was absolutely stunning. The amenities, like the indoor and outdoor pool were very nice. I will likely be coming back to this resort often. Great stay!
- 5/5
Lovely hotel and the views are amazing
- 5/5
The moccasin at the very end was perfect for walking and finding some solitude. The property is a little dated but clean ands functional with amazing views of the ocean. I will return!
- 4/5
Good location with both ocean and intercoastal views.
- 5/5
Beautiful view in a great location
- 3/5
Very old & dated, not the most attentive staff, not very clean, room & inside facilities
- 3/5
Staff was great! Property was very well maintained! Rooms could have been cleaner, rooms need updates. I had rolled up carpet and pieces of tile under my bed. They need to put brooms in the rooms so you can sweep up the floors, since they don't clean while you are there. The views were very beautiful!!
- 4/5
Place is nice it was clean Needs new rugs very stained
- 5/5
Loved the beach view. Staff super
- 4/5
We have stayed here several times. Love the suite set up, beautiful ocean views, and access to the beach.
- 1/5
The reception is very rude and make you feel not welcome. I will never ever will stay in this place again.
- 3/5
The room was a bit dated. Li
- 5/5
Beautiful! Every room has an ocean view that is heavenly! I have stayed there many years now, my favorite spot!
- 1/5
Really run down and not clean.
- 3/5
Staff were distracted. Never made eye contact at check in. Better at check out. Pools were overrun by kids. Fridge nor tv worked right in room but we were there to short a time to actually complain. Beach and sound views and access were great.
- 5/5
The resort and room were very clean and the staff were very professional. Location was perfect!! Beautiful beach views - all oceanfront! The only suggestion I have is to replace the mattress in the room we stayed in; it was not fit for a comfortable night’s sleep.
- 5/5
The young girl at the front desk was extremely helpful an patient.
- 5/5
The oceanfront view was spectacular we were right at the horizon line. The peace the ocean brings was just right. The staff was pleasant and though we could tell the room was recently renovated they are making the right improvements to get the facility to 98% We would stay again.
- 5/5
Full size refrigerator, 2 burner stove top, microwave, and dishwasher. Good for an extended stay.
- 5/5
The resort was very clean, even though the rooms felt a bit dated, and the location was exceptional with private access to the beach, something my family truly enjoyed for its convenience and ease.
- 5/5
The view is amazing and it's perfect from every room basically. Full size kitchen basically with everything you need to cook if you want. Restaurant downstairs is great not ridiculously priced if you don't want to leave. The rooms are set up wonderfully like a one bedroom apartment. At least in mine a full and half bath which was impressive. Beach is perfect we had a great time on the boogie boards we brought. Pools are wonderful for kids.

Great beach view from the balcony. Room fairly clean but had moldy odor. Check in person never smiled. Several guest were smoking in their balcony.
- 2/5
Beautiful view. Outdated. Beds were clean. Had to find sheets in lobby for sofa bed. Air conditioner was frozen and not working, looked like the filter was years old. Curtains in bedroom would help because the outdoor light came through blinds and made the room too light. Throw out the area rug, it is dirty and gross.
- 2/5
Showers barely worked. Censures were down. Restaurant was not open the entire time we were there. Room was not what was showing in pictures. Check in staff was very rude. Location is ok but not walkable to anything. Nowhere to eat over the bridge as every restaurant only seats about 20 ppl.
- 1/5
When I booked this place, it was based on the pictures online. When we got to our room it looked like I was back in the 70’s. Pastel flowers on drapes with matching chairs. Braided area carpets that hold sand for random. The room was so outdated and not clean. I literally wipe the floor with a wash cloth. Arriving staff was friendly. I asked for a late check out and the woman didn’t even make eye contact with me before she said no. Not friendly at all. No daily housekeeping. I definitely won’t return to this hotel.
- 5/5
Our second stay was just like our first one….AWESOME!!!!
- 2/5
View great Exercise room has broken equipment and few weights Room needs upgrades
- 2/5
Location is fantastic.
- 3/5
The data and WiFi speeds all over the township are very prohibitively slow. If you are expecting to do any sort of web-faced heavy lifting, expect to have to work offline frequently to prevent stalls
- 4/5
The prices on the hotel restaurant menu in the room is outdated. The prices in the hotel restaurant are much higher. Also very overpriced for what we got. Almost $4 for a regular can of coke was very disappointing. The Wi-Fi was terrible, so plan accordingly. Otherwise, stay was nice.
- 4/5
All that said, the ocean view was awesome, the bed was comfortable and my grandkids loved it. So I would probably stay again, but I would definitely bring my own chairs and umbrella that I left at home!
- 5/5
Love that every room has a beachfront view. Staff is always helpful and friendly. Love how the lobby has been updated.
- 2/5
Unit I stayed in was dirty. The restaurant was closed First two days of stay with no notice. When it did open there was still few things you could choose from. Hot tub is a warm kiddie pool. They could not find remotes to TV’s in the room. Furniture was torn and dirty. Last day was cold outside but indoor pool was not available. Not a good was financially to spend my spring break with kids
- 2/5
Had so many issues. Was told our room was ready when it wasn’t. Onsite restaurant was closed the entire time of our stay from Sunday-Wednesday. Pull out sofa mattress had stains and smelled. Dirty utensils in the drawer. Resort was out of pool towels and hotel towels. Dining table was almost falling apart. Toilet did not flush. Shower did not drain. No conditioner available. TV remotes did not work in bedroom. The remote that was in the room didn’t even belong to the tv’s in the unit. Was told guests often steal them. So I guess no one is checking the rooms after guests leave.

The location and view from Shell Island is marvelous. Whether you’re looking at the ocean side or the marsh side, Shell Island is the last residence on the north end of Wrightsville Beach. The indoor and outdoor pools are nice. The staff were hospitable and responsive. The suite size is better than most. Ours had a double Queen bedroom on the marsh side, a 1/2 bath and full bath, and a living/dining area on the beach side. The only complaint we had is that the room’s furnishing were more Motel 6 than we expected. The beds were basic and not all that comfortable. The microwave was installed against the wall and the door couldn’t open more than a few inches. The coffee and side tables were knock down furniture and were separating at the joints. This was a bummer because we lived in Wilmington for a few decades and visited Wrightsville Beach regularly. Shell Island was a dream stay and it didn’t quite live up to its high end persona.
- 3/5
I love the location and the staff are great. The room was so dirty though. It definitely should have been cleaned thoroughly. The restaurant lacks in variety, taste, and they had missed items in our to go order.
- 5/5
Very nice resort. The room/suite was nicely furnished and clean. I like that all the rooms face the beach. We’d stay here again.
- 3/5
Hopefully It was just off season but the restaurant hours were ridiculous. No complimentary coffee and the restaurant didn’t open until 8 am. They close again between each meal service as well. Rather disappointing when others offer coffee and water for a lesser rate.
- 5/5
very nice atmosphere. Staff were very helpful.
- 5/5
Was in town for a wedding. Our stay was very pleasant. Staff was very nice and room was clean. Only disappointment was food in restaurant. Two meals breakfast and dinner both served cold both times restaurant was not crowded.
- 5/5
Great property right on the beach.
- 3/5
The location is perfection. But the building is old and the noise is real. The slamming of doors and up and down the walkway. I will frequently stay here, but it is a loud hotel.
- 4/5
Kind, friendly staff and a nice quiet beach, but they has a consistent shortage of beach towels, shower towels, and shampoo products, etc. Just a little too far to walk to restaurants & ice cream shops, etc.
- 5/5
Excellent place to stay balcony overlooking the ocean and a gorgeous waterway view from the bedroom. Very quiet and peaceful. I stay here as often as I can.
- 4/5
The room was great. The hot tub was freezing cold. There were no bars available and the 1 restaurant was only open a fraction of the day.
- 5/5
Nice suite!
- 5/5
Good price and great views. Location is at the end of the island. Small condo but perfect for 2 and comfortable for 4.
- 5/5
Internet worked fine. Restaurant and bar service. Staff friendly. Our room was really good. The views are superb!
- 5/5
Excellent view of the beach. Great size room and well-priced.
- 3/5
The location of this property is excellent. We felt safe. All units have lovely ocean views. It is an older property. It is not a fancy place. Each unit is different. Our visit was during shoulder season and some maintenance was being done. We stayed on the 4th floor - room 413 and found it to be quite nice. The bed was comfortable. Our rate was excellent and our expectations were met.
- 5/5
Very peaceful locale… view amazing. Absolutely no complaints
- 1/5
Not a good experience
- 2/5
I believe the resort is highly misrepresented. The rooms are very small, with an unpleasant paint color, and the bedding had noticeable spots and marks on it. The fitness room is extremely small—more like a fitness corner—with only four machines. The gift shop is also tiny and carries very few items; they didn’t even have sunscreen, and the souvenirs mentioned in the advertisement were available. The hallways resemble those of a prison building, which creates an uninviting atmosphere. Additionally, the hot tub was not working during our stay.
- 5/5
No, gym was not well equipped
- 3/5
The on-site restaurant was closed the entire time we were there because of occupancy. So that was a huge bummer given that was one reason we booked this one. My kids enjoyed the indoor pool and the easy Beach access. The price is good, and the parking is easy.
- 3/5
We arrived to our room and it looked like it had not been cleaned after the previous stay. There was hair in the shower and trash still in the trash bins from the previous people.
- 5/5
Location is absolutely beautiful. I loved the king suite. They're was plenty of room to relax and the ocean view was spectacular.

- 5/5
Was under repairs when we went, but we where advised ahead
- 3/5
Advertised as a premium room. Only one burner worked on the stove top, very small refrigerator, sparsely equipped to cook. Had to request a frying pan, no toaster etc. we have stayed here every year for twenty years and this was the worst we have had.
- 5/5
beach view at sunrise and sunset is tremendous
- 2/5
This is off season and noone in the lobby, but check in was so slow. Hot Tub was down. Went to stay for one night only but was awakened by workers on scaffolding outside my window at 7am. Staff were not very professional and only made excuses, not accommodations, for the inconveniences. This is mid-March and temperature is 59', therefore they should be happy they have a customer.
- 2/5
The view was nice but the construction on the resort was more than just noisy. It was awful! No relaxation at all.
- 4/5
Yes it was very clean.
- 4/5
The View is amazing!!!! Totally worth it! My only downside, The check in process could have been a lot quicker. It’s a nice cute oceanfront stay and has the sea chanty beach look and is very spacious. For those looking for super contemporary and clean looks, this might not be for you. But if you’re the kind of person that likes beach bungalow vibes, gorgeous views and a quiet beach, this is the hotel for you.
- 3/5
Nice beach view
- 3/5
The staff was kind. Mattress was very thin and hurt our backs. bathroom was a bit dirty and food at restaurant was not great just ok.
- 5/5
Very clean suite, courteous and helpful staff. They gave us a late check out at no charge because of our situation.
- 5/5
Loved the place! My husband and I had a wonderful time. It was peaceful and the weather was great.
- 4/5
The Ocean view from our room was excellent.
- 4/5
The room was in great condition and the staff was courteous. On the not so good side, I will mention lack of tea and facial tissue in the room. Also, free coffee was not provided in the lobby except when the restaurant was not working on Sundays and Mondays.
- 4/5
Nice location right on beach. Service at check in was little slow, room showing some age but clean and comfortable. Room did have no a/c and drain in tub was partially blocked. Would definitely stay again. Beach was nice, clean and quiet.
- 5/5
Well decorated room we were able to gather with family for hours and be comfortable there.
- 3/5
Just not the place to stay in the dead of winter. Rooms all face outside like a motel. Staff was kind but minimal. Hot tub jets were broken. The one lamp in the bedroom room (no overhead light or fan) was broken but replaced quickly when reported.
- 3/5
The view is the best part of the stay. The staff was unpleasant. The room was last remodeled in 1994. Think thrifted furniture. Couch was stained. Lamps that were not plugged in or near a plug. Bed super comfy. Very no frills hotel with no real amenity worth the stay...
- 3/5
Staff was great and the room was clean, however- the bed was detached from the head board making it impossible to sleep, toilet paper was not only rough feeling like sandpaper, but also kept falling off the holder. The way the bedroom was set up you couldn’t even watch the tv at night.
- 2/5
Not great experience. Staff was not helpful with double charge of resort fee. Loud construction during stay. Restaurant and bar closed due to painting. Convenience store on site had barely anything in it. Hot tub jets weren’t working.
- 5/5
Beautiful view. Great getaway
- 4/5
Nice staff - clean room and good space - excellent view . On site restaurant had little ambience but staff was friendly and accommodating .
- 1/5
1st room was dirty . 2nd room heat didn’t work,3rd room tv didn’t work. That place sucks
- 1/5
Sent us to a dirty room when we got there had to wait a hour for someone to clean it then ended up having to leave early had insurance on my trip and still was not refunded terrible experience
- 2/5
Will not return.
- 5/5
Checking in was easy, staff was friendly. The room was clean and the ocean front view was amazing!
- 5/5
Kind and quick staff’s supports when we found one of bed’s broken leg, and switched the diffrernt room for us.
- 5/5
Room was very clean, amazing view, helpful staff and location is peaceful.
- 4/5
Staff was great (Tiffany) room was clean
- 5/5
Great service, clean room, and great views!!
- 4/5
Room was spotless, but some of the blankets and pillows could use a refresh.
- 5/5
The view! It was wonderful to have an oceanfront view. The room was also very nice.
- 5/5
The room was VERY nice and the staff were very helpful. I highly recommend
- 2/5
The room was dirty and one of the sinks stopped working within a few hours. I would give this more stars if the room was cheaper. The view is spectacular but a clean room is a must for me.

It was absolutely beautiful!
- 5/5
Another great stay in paradise! Room was nice, staff was nice and the beach was fabulous! We also had a yummy breakfast from the restaurant. Pancakes were the best! Thanks again!
- 5/5
Clean, great location, accommodating staff.
- 4/5
Staff is very helpful and the views spectacular.
- 5/5
Nice clean rooms, staff friendly
- 4/5
Perfect location! Room 216 was good. Furniture fine. Beach View awesome. Bed comfy. My only issue is either the water has a smell or it’s the shower/tub drain has a smell. Otherwise, good 3 night stay.
- 2/5
very nice view
- 4/5
Room clean and loved the ocean front view of beach
- 3/5
Room was a bit dated. Under each sink was mold from water leaks. Doorwall to balcony would not lock.
- 2/5
Bathroom cleanliness, and mattress was old and worn, staff was amazing, bar keep was great. location was breathtaking, wish room service was available during off season
- 5/5
I love that Shell Island has all beachfront views, and all are gorgeous!!! The staff are all friendly and helpful. I love that they have a restaurant right in the hotel. This was a great stay. I will come back again and again!!!
- 4/5
The room was clean, view was good, and it was quiet.

- 5/5
I loved my stay at Shell Island Resort! The staff were great, my room was clean, (King) huge, kitchenette was so handy, a separate living space w a big flatscreen tv and then…there is the most stunning part of this Resort…a full balcony with comfy chairs and a table with OCEAN FRONT VIEWS!!! For those who love the sea and from one who grew up by the Sea I can’t get enough! I will be back often! Even if it’s cold outside being by the sea, there’s nothing more relaxing to the human mind and body. I give Shell Island Resort a 10 star rating!!
- 5/5
Great hotel. Your staff was friendly and helpful
- 4/5
The property is overdue for a remodel. The room desperately needed some TLC. A deep cleaning and an updating, Overall, it was a very nice getaway and we would recommend!

beautiful beach view, very clean helpful staff

Ocean view
- 3/5
The room just wasnt clean like before
- 5/5
Great location
- 5/5
Clean room, great views, incredibly helpful staff.
- 4/5
Nice room, great ocean views, comfortable bed. But check in at 4 when the only onsite restaurant closes at 4 most days is a problem for hungry weary travelers.
- 4/5
Location and ocean views were excellent. The front desk people were friendly and helpful. The room itself needs updating. The heavy drapes and heavy furniture make it seem a little dark and dingy. While it was cleaned from the last visitor, it wasn’t freshened up and was dusty. That all said, the views were spectacular!
- 5/5
Great room and amenities. Both pools are great. Just a great place to stay. Wonderful staff.
- 5/5
Shell Island is the perfect getaway for locals summer. It is on the quiet north end of Wrightsville Beach with friendly staff and beautiful views from your room and balcony. It is nothing fancy but perfect for what it is.
- 2/5
Other issues included a wobbly toilet in the half bath, leaky cold water faucet, no dustpan or iron, and a shortage of linens, pillows, and towels for the pull-out bed (though the front desk did provide extras when asked). The view was great and the staff were as helpful as they could be, but the overall condition of the unit—especially the moldy pull-out bed—was unacceptable. I would consider staying at the resort again however, not in this particular unit. Silver lining I learned I should inspect units closer moving forward especially where we sleep.
- 5/5
The staff were very responsive to our requests, and we were able to enjoy the best ocean view in a lovely room.
- 5/5
Absolutely wonderful!!!!!
- 5/5
Staff were wonderful. Room was spotless, beautiful. Bartender, Trevor was great company, managed a busy bar and restaurant with ease and courtesy, with personal attention to each patron. Amenities were well kept and comprehensive. I will come back soon.
- 5/5
Such a spacious room and the one of the most comfortable beds ever. Beautiful view of the ocean with a balcony.
- 4/5
View and location incredible. Interiors have been updated since last visit 15 years ago! Staff friendly and helpful.
- 3/5
My room had a great deal of wear and tear. On one side, there was noise from the parking deck. On the ocean side, a wire or cord of some sort extended from the dunes to the top of the building cutting the view in half.
- 3/5
The floor to ceiling windows and balcony view was amazing. This is an older property and needs updating. My particular room had a musty smell. There was dripping coming from the furnace/water heater closet. The floor in the closet had a 1/4 inch of water and the pipes were covered in black mold. No bottle opener in kitchen. They provided bar soap in the bathroom but no soap dish.
- 5/5
everything was fabulous
- 5/5
Great room and great view. Parking was simple and the property was well maintained, however the room was not the cleanest, particularly the bathroom floor. All-in-all, I would recommend
- 3/5
Depends on which room you stay in. Its a hit or miss with the rooms.
- 1/5
Really dirty room. I had to clean the room myself. It was people’s hair on baseboards underneath sofa and tables was not swept or vacuumed. Can tell it hadn’t been done in a long time.
- 4/5
The location was great for beach access and access to the start of the Iron Man swim.
- 3/5
The toilet in my room would not flush. Overall condition was very average
- 2/5
Room was not clean. Hair “balls” rolling around on floor. Seems whole area needs updating!!!! The beach view was perfect. All-in-all, not thrilled with whole experience. Sorry that review was not more positive!
- 3/5
beach view and breakfast
- 4/5
This was a great stay for a night. I wanted to wake up by the beach and did just that with, with a great view. The staff were very friendly, and the beds were pretty comfortable. My only issue was that our room was not as clean as I'd have liked. The restroom was not optimal and some of our dishes had debris on them.
- 3/5
The worst beds I have ever slept in. Not sure if all beds are like this. Our unit was also a little outdated and cabinets were not sturdy and old. Stay clear from room 509. Probably won’t stay here again as the whole resort looked a little rundown and older.
- 5/5
The view from room and balcony was amazing
- 5/5
Beach front view was incredible
- 5/5
Loved it
- 3/5
Definite 3 star. Room was clean and they have a good layout, but otherwise average. Need serious soundproofing: slamming doors, conversation in other units, toilets flushing, makes it hard to sleep. Beach is beautiful, but hard to enjoy from the balcony with people smoking pot in nearby units.
- 5/5
The view was breathtaking. We really appreciated the double bathroom. We ate breakfast each day in the dining room and the food and service were excellent. The Assistant Manager, Josh, anticipated our every need and was so welcoming and friendly, The staff at the desk was also helpful and welcoming. We like forward to our next visit!
- 4/5
Staff was great and views with ocean facing balcony were amazing. Only negative was the room could have been cleaner. Hard water has been rough on the shower fixtures. Other than that, I’d definitely return.
- 4/5
The furniture was Ikea level but the room was clean and had everything we needed except a dishwasher. The building itself seems worn, and one of the two elevators did not work for some of our stay. Some of the staff were very nice and welcoming, while others were not very friendly.
- 5/5
Great staff and view.
- 2/5
We have come to this resort every time we visit Wilmington for 25 years and we have never been so diappointed. Our rooms were so undesirable that we won't be back. One double bed lookied like it had been slept in and we had to request a change before sleeping the 1st night. The mattress nd linens are cheap. It felt like sleeping on cardboard with a rough old sheet. Absolutely no ventilation in the condo and no thermostate throughout so we left the beach slider open and we fought to sleep on the couch. The bonus of the condo was that the stove top did not work either. This is officially our last visit to Shell Island.
- 4/5
The resort is generally very nice. Although, it does show need of repairs here and there as did our condo. Considering that we paid extra for the top tier condo, I expected it to be nicer.
- 5/5
Beach view was great and parking felt safe.
- 3/5
Loved the view outside our suite.
- 3/5
This hotel is not what I expected it to be. I thought these were all walk out onto the beach suites. I had no idea it was a high-rise. It is pretty much at the furthest point of Wrightsville Beach that you could possibly get so it was very out-of-the-way of anything. And I know this I would’ve rented a car instead of relying on Uber and Lyft. The fire alarm went off one night right before midnight, and it was not very loud in the room. I did notify the security person at the hotel, but she didn’t seem to really be overly concerned, by the fact that I was telling her that the alarm was not very loud. All in all our stay was good. The weather was not very good, but that’s not something that can be controlled. We did make the most of our vacation and the hotel was not horrible, but as I said before, it’s not what I expected it to be.
- 5/5
Great experience beautiful view !
- 5/5
Incredible views with amazing beach front access!
- 5/5
Gorgeous beach, and sound! Our favorite beach and spot to vacation. Peaceful, calm and great service. The area has many different and delicious food and beverage options.
- 5/5
Excellent resort
- 4/5
We liked this hotel enough to come a second time. It's one of the best
- 4/5
Large rooms with a beautiful view of the ocean! Friendly staff, easy parking, and perfect location. You cannot find a larger room with a better view!
- 5/5
Great beach location
- 5/5
Ocean views, quiet beach area, spacious rooms - will definitely stay here again!
- 2/5
The rooms are dated and do not feel very fresh. The water trickled out of one of the bathroom faucets. The water that came out of the bathtub tap was brown. The staff was not very warm and welcoming. Even upon checkout, I was never even asked how my day was. They were no beach chairs and umbrellas because it was considered the off-season. I had previously asked if that would be available and was told yes. Had I known, I would’ve packed beach chairs. I cannot speak to the bar and restaurant as I did not experience those.
- 3/5
Kitchen was nice but left 1 tiny pack of dry cream ( about 1/8 tsp), and 2 tiny packs of sugar ( about 1/ 2 tsp). Not even enough for 1 cup of coffee or tea. 1 small pack of coffee.. no tea bags. ( i dont drink coffee). Cant get ice anywhere - have to buy. Can rent chairs & umbrella for beach. 1 umbrella & 2 chairs cost $50.00. ( a bit much). 1 tiny, tiny bar of soap in shower. No blow dryer. Tiny container of shampoo. Beds were comfortable. All in all not bad, but wont be back.
- 5/5
Property is older but location and amenities are nice! Staff is very helpful
- 5/5
I looked at all the rooms are different, it’s very clean and we had a great day!
- 3/5
Excellent location however property is run down. Sofas were stained, dining table was wobbly and mattress was super uncomfortable. I woke up stiff and they should invest in better mattresses.
- 5/5
Amazing view of the ocean. Excellent staff. Loved it
- 5/5
I went in the off season, but the room was extremely nice for the cost. I paid $218 a night. I grew up in the area and have driven by a 100 times as a kid. Decided to give it a shot while I was in town visiting, was not disappointed at all. Highly recommend
- 4/5
All rooms are oceanfront. This resort is the last one on the road and therefore quiet, but only a short drive to the local activity. Indoor and outdoor pools are delightful. Providing umbrellas would be a welcome improvement. Our room, 207, was clean but the bathtub drain was slow and the sprayer in the kitchen sink was so clogged we used water from the bathroom for drinking and washing dishes.
- 5/5
Beach view was excellent - Weather was good. I did not have any pets.
- 4/5
The room was clean and staff were super friendly and helpful! Unfortunately, the hot tub was not working. As this had been listed as an issue mentioned by prior visitors to this property, I can only assume it is an ongoing issue that perhaps should not be mentioned as an amenity if it is not properly functioning.
- 3/5
they need to clean there room better and update there beds and furniture both were wore out we have stay several times the view is beautiful but need updates bad
- 1/5
Best thing was the oceanfront view. Beyond that, the hotel was not what I expected for a beachside location. Seems old and tired. Needs updating, soon!
- 4/5
I would highly recommend this property for a beach vacation. The suites are spacious with lovely beach decor. The ocean view from the balcony is amazing.
- 4/5
Loved how quite the beach was. The condo needed new mattresses and couch. Otherwise beautiful
- 3/5
Needs fixing up. You pay for the beach access . The rooms are small and not comfortable . Staff is nice and helpful but rooms are not ready. No filter for the coffee . Not enough towels - there were 2 and we had four people in our group. Not enough pillows and no sheets or bedding for the pull out bed that 2 of the 4 of us slept on. We had to go back down the elevator eight floors to ask the staff for those things. When they should’ve already been in the room ready for us. The shower also smelled like a wet dog. And there was a cockroach. The view is beautiful and the ocean was spectacular. But that hotel itself needs a lot of work.
- 4/5
Would love to have a toaster in the room for breakfast. Otherwise was a great place to stay
- 5/5
All the rooms have a balcony looking at the ocean.
- 5/5
quiet, beautiful location
- 4/5
Run down rooms location outstanding.
- 3/5
Great beach location, super quiet. Few kids.
- 4/5
I really like the property. They could really do with adding another elevator. It’s a pretty long wait at certain times.
- 3/5
The rooms are not as depicted on the website. They're small and the balconies are very small. Not as updated as they appear online. You can hear all the noise from the people above you and from the halls outside your room. Would not recommend this property.
- 5/5
Worth every penny. Will be back
- 3/5
Don't count on sleeping well though. The beds are horribly uncomfortable, noisy and seem to be very old. My wife likes softer beds and I like a firm mattress, but neither of us could get a good night's sleep. Overall the "resort" is pretty average at best. Needs a good overhaul and a lot of maintenance to be someplace we would come back to. I travel quite a lot and these are probably the worst beds I've tried to sleep on in the last 15 years. Staff is very nice and efficient but basically, you are not staying at a 4 star resort so don't expect much else. We spent a lot of time away from the hotel exploring the area so not much time in the room. Wrightsville Beach has some good restaurants. We checked the hotel guide and tried several of the recommended ones. All of them were very good. Shell Island is a decent value for a mid-week stay but if you're a light sleeper I would say that this isnt the place for you.
- 3/5
The staff was very nice. Shower had some issues, windows were all dirty and the furniture was well loved. It was ok for us because we didn’t spend much time in the room but it definitely could have been better. The view was beautiful and beach access was great! Very close to a lot of great dining options and shopping for gifts to bring home for family. Again, all of the staff we met were very friendly and welcoming but our room needed some serious upgrades for what we spent to stay. If these things were fixed we would love to go back!
- 4/5
I had to change rooms twice because the original bedroom TV was not working. The condo I was moved to was up to date and spacious. The only problem was there were long strands of hair on the couch which shows it had not been cleaned thoroughly. As a result, I asked the front desk for cleanser but they had Lysol so I took that. When I obtained extra towels from the front desk, practically all of them had long strands of brownish blonde hairs. This is unacceptable! Please make sure persons washing towels wear hair nets. I for one do not want to use towels that have other people’s hair on them. That’s very unsanitary!!
- 4/5
Very quiet and peaceful except for housekeeping moving furniture above us while we were trying to sleep in. Beautiful location and view. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable. Sheets were stiff and scratchy. The room was only stocked with 2 towels…. Tv in the bedroom did not work as the outlet didn’t work. Beautiful area but I would not choose this resort again.
- 5/5
Had an amazing vacation here. Loved the location and being there Sunday thru Wed it wasn’t too busy.
- 4/5
The room was nice the view is amazing. But the only problem I had was the cleanliness of the pools and hot tub. My whole stay I never saw it cleaned once and they were dirty.
- 3/5
The views however, were spectacular from the unit all around!
- 5/5
It was a great location. Beautiful beach right out the back door. Great views from the balcony. Parking on site.
- 5/5
Great place to stay anytime of year.
- 5/5
Enjoyed our stay. Can’t wait to come back
- 3/5
I expected more! The staff were very friendly. I didn't care for the room. Very few amenities. You had to ask for everything. No house keeping service unless requested. Ice machine broken. Hot tub broken. Old small toilets. Living space furniture uncomfortable. Dining table chairs loose and wobbling. Refrigerator arms inside door were broken. The a/c was cold but only in certain areas. It could have used some ceiling fans. There was some mold and chalking issues. The bed howerever was comfortable. Movies in the living room area but not in the bedroom. Only basic cable. The pool was was just ok. Nice balcony and view of the beach and ocean. No free breakfast or free coffee in the lobby.

Shell Island Resort is my get away place when I need to relax and recharge.
- 5/5
Every one was friendly, helpful and attentive . Our room was beautifully furnished and decorated. Highly recommend this resort have stayed there many times wish they could fix the hot tub. Ate breakfast twice it was hot and nicely prepared.
- 5/5
Quiet, safe and beautiful place!
- 3/5
The property is the same as it was when I went over 10 years ago. The sofa bed was not comfortable at all and it was so noisy every time I moved. There were flies in the room too. The staff wasn’t helpful and didn’t offer any help with concerns. I will say it’s a good secluded resort which I liked when I went before, but it is not convenient to walk anywhere just FYI. The beach outside is clean

Great location for Beach access

Enjoyed the stay!

Now for the cons: The beds are lined up against the wall with the sidewalk right outside and there are windows above the beds making it a little weird to think people could be right there by your head. There are no blackout curtains which means the bedroom is lit up by the security lights and for someone who needs complete darkness to sleep it makes it difficult. The bed was a little lumpy also so getting really rested was a challenge. We tried the pullout bed in the living room and that helped the light situation but was not super comfortable. I don't remember the bed being that uncomfortable the first time I stayed there but honestly, I'll sacrifice a couple of night's sleep for the proximity of the beach, inlet, and marsh for the birding.

Beautiful beach just past pool area. Outdoor pool was cold but nice l I unging area and convenient tiki bar. Room was very nice with views if beach. Perfect!
- 5/5
We had a beautiful view of both the beach to the east and the marsh to the west.
- 5/5
Beautiful location with friendly, helpful staff!
- 4/5
Loved the beach! Very private and lots of room to walk! Property is somewhat dated, but room was sufficient. Liked the oceanview balcony and windows, kitchette, and 2 toilets. Pool area is nice, but no view of ocean, only the sand dunes.
- 5/5
The staff was GREAT AND HELPFUL! Were repeat guests. Our plan is to return We’ve recommended your establishment to family and friends. We do not want them to be disappointed. Thank you for everything.
- 4/5
Very nice stay. The bed was very hard,
- 4/5
Dining room table collapsed, microwave oven did not turn. Otherwise we enjoyed our visit, staff were very courteous. Staying 2 more nights cost us over 900. .00 dollars. Lunch and dinner were not available for first 3 days we were there. Hot tub did not work.
- 3/5
I feel the pictures weren’t the same in person for the rooms.. we actually left a day early. Staff was really nice especially the ones in the restaurant the beach access was amazing and it was quiet. The room and hotel just wasn’t what we were expecting
- 2/5
I was overcharged for the room and the excuse they gave was it was because it was on a Sunday. And the extra $25 per day facility fee is bullsh*t. The view is very good. That’s about it.
- 4/5
It was a good stay for our quick getaway
- 3/5
Do not put plastic baskets for garbage on the ocean shore The cleaning ones didn't go by to ask if they need anything
- 4/5
Place was “tired”. Not vey clean

Predictably wonderful.

We love staying at Shell Island. The staff is friendly, helpful, and willing to do go above and beyond for their customers.

Very well kept hotel. Great layout. Fabulous beach. Friendly, accommodating staff. Will definitely return
- 5/5
It was lovely and we had a great time!
- 5/5
Great facility as it has been for years. Super staff. Great beach. Just love it.
- 5/5
We stay here all the time.
- 3/5
F&B was poor. Servers nice but clearly not trained properly. Need to improve quality of food and staff training.
- 4/5
The resort is an older property and there are some signs of wear, but it has been well maintained overall. Inside, our unit was comfortable and clean. There was a large dead roach outside our door in the corridor. It was never removed. The restaurant was great for breakfast. We did not eat other meals there so I can’t comment on lunch or dinner. The staff was very friendly and one of the waitstaff went out of his way to find me teabags. That made my morning.
- 5/5
Nice and clean I got a lot of rest
- 2/5
Facility was not clean Pools & jacuzzi were gross Tiki bar was never open Restaurant was not open most of the time Resort was build in the early 1980’s and you can tell
- 4/5
It’s a very convenient place to stay. You can easily walk to the beach! The only thing is the rooms need major upgrades. The bed have dips in the middle, the shower heads need more water pressure. It’s hard to wash hair and get sand off with as weak shower head. The bathroom walls need to be wiped down from hair flyways and just overall dirty spots that need to be cleaned from others touching. TVs need to be mounted correctly as they are not straight on the walls. We didn’t get daily room clean. Did see the policy for room cleaning. Overall this is a place for beach convenience!
- 5/5
All was perfect
- 4/5
We come back to this resort every time because it truly is one of the best places for a vacation. The only downside we’ve experienced was with room 613. We stayed there twice and found the stove old and rusty, the kitchen sink leaking from both the top and bottom, and the white dining table sticky, even after multiple attempts to clean it with disinfecting wipes. Aside from that, everything else is wonderful. I highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway.
- 5/5
We have stayed here the past 2 years! Love this place! Nice and quiet location with very spacious beach area.
- 4/5
Every room is ocean front, convenient to the beach. Staff is friendly.
- 5/5
Great for a quick overnight
- 4/5
The property is older and in need of some update, but that is to be expected at the beach, at least in our experience. The traditional king was quite comfortable. The supplies upon arrival were certainly enough to get us through at least a couple of days. You can't beat the oceanfront view! We had a lovely break, exactly what we were looking for.
- 3/5
The facility was nice and the room was clean, but we got a premium king suite and the shower didn't work. We called the front desk to let them know, and maintenance never came during our stay to fix it. Pool was nice.
- 1/5
The sheets were old with yellow stains. The towels were gross. There were no sheets or blankets or pillows for the pullout. We had to go down to get sheets but they didn't have any pillows available. Coffee was 3 dollars a cup in the morning. There is no water available. The tiki bar was not open at any point during our stay in August. The paint was peeling in the lobby. The floor of the room was slanted. There was rust running down the door. There was mold in the bathtub. This property has great views but was otherwise disgusting and depressing.
- 4/5
Our unit was fairly clean. There were a few plumbing issues-the tub did not drain until the plug was removed and one toilet handle did not work well. The restaurant and tiki bar were not open. The views are beautiful. For an older property, it is fine.
- 2/5
Beach access was perfect, some staff were nice and some were rude. Awesome views but the room was dirty, floors were filthy and the shower felt like it was so old you could see all the rusty stuff on the shower head.
- 5/5
Hotel very clean bed comfortable great view of beach quite area restaurant was great
- 3/5
property and rooms need updating
- 3/5
It was not specified that the rooms are individually owned. Called the front desk and asked if there was a hair dryer available and the front desk said "I don't know, is there?" Why else would I be calling..... I told her I couldn't find one and asked if I could get one and she said "No, they don't belong to us". She was quite rude and didn't explain that each room has their own amenities.... Restaurant, coffee bar and Tiki bar were also closed without any prior warning.
- 5/5
Great location on the end of the island, wake up to beautiful sunrises and walk directly to beach.
- 4/5
The only problem we had was with the restaurant. Saturday morning we went for breakfast placed our order and waited more than 1/2 before we found that they had lost our order ticket and then waited about another 1/2 before getting served. We only wish the waitress would have told us from the get go instead of us just sitting there asking several times how much longer and seeing everyone that came after us get served we were literally about the last to get served besides another couple. Although the waitress wiped out the charges it was a very unpleasant experience and the other waitresses/waiter also apologized, then for lunch we figure we try again and when we received the bill we were charged twice for a sweet tea drink when it was only one. Restaurant needs to shape up and be more careful of what they are doing!
- 5/5
Enjoyed our stay very much and will return again!!
- 5/5
It was a great experience. I will be back soon.
- 4/5
How wonderful to be so close to the ocean! Very convenient to have two pools as well. The rooms were fine. The restaurant and bar could have greater hours, and open every day. They were actually closed our last two days. If you are without a car there isn't anything accessible. Some staff were fabulous, others were sad and unenthusiastic. Overall we loved our stay though! Thank you!
- 5/5
We stayed at Shell Island for three separate weeks. We kept extending. We love it there.
- 5/5
Really beautiful beach Wrightsville Beach is really fun for young and old. Its a family fun beach. Love it at Shell Island suoer accomodating.
- 1/5
The room was dirty, the bed lines, bathroom toilets, couches, floors and the kitchen cabinets have cockroach.
- 4/5
No hair dryer, shampoo, body wash in rooms. A wedding took place Saturday night and our room was directly impacted by noise.
- 3/5
Love the location, however the property has been totally let go, no common area upkeep at all, as far as we could see.
- 5/5
I love the private beach at the end of the island!
- 1/5
I've stayed before multiple times and it was ok. But now it is overpriced and run down. Uncomfortable bed, low shower pressure, water damage on the ceiling, dirty furniture. And the staff acted like they didn't want to be there. Lame.
- 4/5
Resort is dated and needs some upgrades badly. It’s convenient and private on the end of the beach but could definitely use some upgrades
- 3/5
Just meh. Trash from other rooms was in the hallway and blew around the walkway. Building felt old and a bit grungy. Marks on the doors and walls outside and in room. Bed was comfortable and room was clean. They offer free towels, everything else is an extra charge. We wouldn't stay here again.
- 3/5
I liked that it was close to the beach but it wasn’t clean.
- 3/5
No
- 3/5
Upon arrival we didnt have items from maid cart, so we ask for them. The floor felt sandy and was dirty when I wiped it. Fridge icemaker does not work, even after maintenance checked it, #905. Hall light only works sporadically. Slow water in baths. Very few kitchen items available. Lock on balcony door didnt work until maintenance fixed it. AC unit in bedroom hardly puts out any air, had to leave door open for extra coolness in unit. Maintenance checked it. Definitely needs daily cleaning on this property, as elevators, walkways, hallways were all not cleaned daily. Restaurant was great!
