Guests generally have a positive experience at this hotel, appreciating its central location and friendly staff. However, there are some recurring issues with room cleanliness and maintenance, as well as concerns about hidden fees and poor communication.

I planned a quick getaway to Austin for the weekend. I enjoyed that the hotel was in downtown walking distance for the night life. In addition, it was easy to get to Barton Springs Pool.

Loved staying at this hotel and love how they have preserved such a historic location.

Quick overnight trip to Austin and it was the perfect location. The pool and hot tub were not very clean but the rooms were clean
- 5/5
Great location! Close to everything downtown. Everything about our room was excellent. Roomy accommodation and great bathroom with vanity area. The restaurants and Happy Hour offerings were all great. We really enjoyed sitting at the bar terrace.

Super friendly staff, clean rooms. Nice hot shower. Soft towels. The restaurant was super delicious. Only complaint was the hot tub was not being tended like it should have been. Other than that, I would absolutely stay again and would recommend it to friends and family.

Great stay in the heart of Austin! The staff and amenities were amazing in this historic hotel.

Wonderful staff, quiet and well maintained hotel, large rooms. Excellent location.

Great property! Clean and quiet. Friendly and helpful staff!
- 4/5
It’s a beautiful historical building with the comfort ie-est pillows and bed. Super convenient location especially for film or tv festivals. Unfortunately there was no real fridge or microwave. The fridge that is there is like one that used to hold drinks however it’s so small that my go-to box from Roaring Fork didn’t fit. I had to put it on its side to get it to fit.
- 5/5
Valet was very attentive. Bar staff was very friendly and provided great service. Overall, I enjoyed my stay and will be back.

The Courtyard was beautiful - loved the balcony views of it & to pool area!

Check in was easy. Room was nice and neat and clean. Didn’t receive the vip drink. Wasn’t sure if i needed to ask. Close to everything and a quick uber ride to every where.

Great property and in a great location. The hotel is very charming and we were upgraded to a junior suite/corner room with a great view of congress ave and Downtown. Enjoyed my birthday weekend and SFA hotel.

Clean, comfortable, and in a great location. Parking, but any hotel downtown, parking isn’t easy.

This was my second time staying at the Royal Sonesta for SXSW music festival. Everything was great. I liked my room a lot, which was a generous size, nicely air conditioned and had a great bathroom. I would happily stay here again for SXSW or any time I'm in Austin.
- 3/5
In addition, the room heating system kept turning on automatically, which was very uncomfortable during our stay. We honestly expected much more from this hotel.

The hotel itself is beautiful, the staff are the friendliest people in a hotel I’ve experienced. The rooms are nice. I’d definitely come here again. One thing I’d say is bring long charging cords because outlets are scarce, 10 foot cords worked well for me. The room furniture is bulky and takes up a lot of space.

Everyone at the hotel was so kind and helpful . The room was clean , wonderful location downtown. Highly recommend !

The hotel & staff were excellent! Only downer was the Cafe for breakfast. Service was extremely slow. So if you are trying to catch a quick breakfast before catching a flight or on to the next adventure, I would say find a restaurant outside the hotel.
- 5/5
The hotel staff were very professional and the rooms were clean! It’s also the second oldest hotel in Austin which is really cool.
- 5/5
I enjoyed the hotel very much, and every single thing a person could want was in that room. Ordinarily, the Royal Sonesta is out of my price range, so it was a special treat to stay there, and especially to be treated with such consideration – not only of my physical limitations, but of me as a person.

But aside from that we had a great stay.
- 5/5
Nice restaurant and bar in the same hotel.
- 4/5
This is a gorgeous historic hotel, and on the whole we enjoyed our stay, but it is above an all-night speakeasy. 3 out of our 4 nights we had loud base drum sounds well into the morning. This was fine for the adults in our party who could sleep in ear plugs, but my daughter was kept up until 1-2am those 3 nights. If you’re a party of adults- 5 stars. If you have any children or sensitive sleepers- skip.

Chilled after show with friends in the lobby with a night cap, comfy chairs n baquetttes. Bellhop valet took my my bags to store in car when I checked out though wasn’t heading to airport till after lunch. Gave me directions n where to gas up…top notch service from real humans!

Nice touch to get $15/day for drinks and snacks. Room very large and bed extremely comfortable. Location very good - right in the heart of Austin. Wish that breakfast was included.

Really great hotel location. The staff is amazing, especially Iris at the front desk. Good in the dining rooms was great and I enjoyed the ability to work out in a safe and clean gym. I will be coming back and bringing my fiancé next time.

Great staff!
- 5/5
This hotel is our favorite! From the friendly staff to the cloud-like bedding and great pillows! Rooms are clean and comfortable and the walls are thick. The 2nd floor bar area has an outdoor seating area that overlooks Congress which is fun for people-watching. There's also an outdoor section where my husband could smoke a cigar, which made him happy. The valet parking is amazing and the attendants go above and beyond to provide excellent service.
- 5/5
Great hotel, perfect location close to bars, good food and entertainment. Valet staff was fast, friendly and went out of their way to help in any way possible. Hotel was beautiful! Would definitely stay here again.

The hotel was beautiful! Great upgrades. Great location.
- 5/5
Fantastic staff. I got an upgrade when they found out we were celebrating an anniversary. Clean property, perfect downtown location. Total class act.
- 4/5
Front desk staff were arguing with each upon my arrival causing the attendant to give me incorrect details on my perks that I would be receiving at the hotel. Other than this incident that was later corrected, our stay was nice.
- 5/5

The front desk staff were friendly, efficient, and always ready to help with any questions or requests. Housekeeping maintained the room to the highest standard, and their attention to detail did not go unnoticed. Even the concierge and support staff were consistently courteous, knowledgeable, and eager to assist. What sets this hotel apart is the level of care and dedication the staff show to their guests. Their positive attitudes and commitment to excellent service created a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere throughout my stay. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for not just a great place to stay, but an unforgettable hospitality experience.

Great service from our valet to the front desk clerks. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. Our room was clean and comfortable. Great location, we were central to plenty of great spots to eat and explore. The hotel has great food options so you don’t have to go far. I would probably request a different room next time because of the noise level at night facing the street. Because it is central and busy with nightlife, it can be loud if you are a light sleeper. Otherwise great experience and would stay here again.

- 5/5
Really pretty hotel, great staff. Didn’t realize the valet was free so that was nice. The gym had a lot of great equipment. The pool room didn’t echo like a lot of hotel pools do. The only thing was the rooms looked a bit outdated and the couch had a big stain on it. I liked the makeup vanity in the bathroom and they had controls right by the bed to control lights and temp.
- 4/5
Very good
- 5/5
Valet service was impressively attentive. Robia at the front desk was incredibly welcoming, attentive and helpful no matter how many questions asked. The Regal-less Gin Lavender Lemon Drop at the hotel bar was perfect. As was the bartender and it's vintage charm creating an effortless elegant escape. Our room was equally charming, spotless and surprisingly quiet considering it was a block from Sixth street. We walked to an 8pm show at the Paramount Theater around the corner which was spectacular then a 10:15pm reservation for delicious Caribbean cuisine at Canje. Our next visit will allow time to enjoy the pool, hot tub, patio and Roaring Fork.

Great front desk area staff. Overall, everyone was accommodating and helpful.

My only issue was that 1 out of 3 elevators was working during our 5 night stay and in the morning the cart would fill up with people. Waiting for the elevator was a bit annoying during morning rush. A second elevator opened up closer to the SXSW festival so I assumed they open all elevators when occupancy is full.
- 4.5/5
I found the staff very friendly from the time you walk in the door and all throughout the stay. Texting with staff was also very helpful to ask questions since I was there for a work conference and didn't have much time to stop at the desk in the morning. The room was incredibly spacious and the facilities (gym and pool) were well equipped. We were happy to be in the back of the building, though the view was not great, it was so silent and peaceful at night!

Loved the indoor pool and jacuzzi-only one in downtown Austin. Unfortunately, we had several disappointments. The room was super small and no coffee or tea in the room. The elevators were having problems There are 3 elevators and only 1 of them was working to serve 16 floors Then, one day, the only operating elevator also stopped working! Fortunately, we could use the cleaning staff elevator but it was a bit anxiety-producing since we were on the 10th floor Hopefully, they will get all 3 elevators in operation because it causes people to wait extra long times with only one working It is also not very safe!

The breakfast at the Fuller Cafe was excellent, along with our waiter, Kevin. The upstairs bar was pleasant. The Roaring Fork restaurant was superb. The only thing which could have been improved on was to provide either tea bags or the Keurig black tea cups in the room.(There was a Keurig with coffee, green and camolie tea cups in the room.) Only coffee was offered in the lobby until 11 AM.

I had originally rented a car but once I saw the cost of parking / valet I returned my rental and used uber / Lyft for transportation that was not within walking distance.

Close proximity to everything like 6th street bars and nightlife. Staff was very prompt and friendly
- 5/5
Had the best time and was perfect. Cozy bed, great staff, and perfect location. Would def come back!
- 5/5
Virtuous knowledgeable staff and a great second floor bar/cigar balcony
- 5/5
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is wonderful. I would definitely stay here again.
- 1/5
We were given a “sofa bed” (which was HORRIBLY UNCOMFORTABLE!!!) when I paid for two deluxe beds!
- 1/5
The room was nice but parking was too expensive and then added all these fees
- 5/5
All good
- 5/5
Combo bath/shower would prefer shower. Also room is dated
- 5/5
Great stay. Would stay again.
- 5/5
Clean, Nice staff, Great location, and comfy bed. Perfect stay!
- 4/5
It was a very enjoyable stay!
- 5/5
The staff was super helpful—especially when I checked in early because of an unusual situation with another hotel. They accommodated us even on a very busy weekend—The Texas Book Fair! The bed was comfortable and the hotel was beautiful. Highly recommend
- 5/5
Excellent hotel, good location
- 5/5
Staff, cleanliness, location, everything!
- 4/5
Nice property close to a lot of fun things. Especially 6th St. we got upgrade at check in which was nice. We stayed 5 nights. On the 4th day we learned of a mattress change out on our entire floor. Was a bit disruptive to our schedule but was manageable. A mall gesture recognizing our inconvenience would have been appreciated.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel and a wonderful stay.
- 5/5
Great old classic hotel, centrally located incfedibly friendly staff
- 5/5
Everything was great! Location, room, restaurants, bars. Byt the best part was the staff! 10/10 recommend
- 5/5
Great hotel in a great location. Front desk staff were exceptional. Didnt have breakfast or drinks but highly recommend
- 5/5
staff was friendly and everything was clean :)
- 3/5
The AC was so loud that it was almost impossible to sleep when it kicked on during the night. But, as far as a place to sleep, it did alright and wouldn't avoid it on an upcoming visit. My credit card was charged an equivalent to a resort fee and some taxes etc. after the stay without any notice from the hotel, had to go back to get a receipt for it, which was a bit annoying.
- 5/5
Great central location, easy to walk to all the sights downtown. Robia on reception was very helpful and is a credit to the hotel.
- 4/5
Great hotel in an excellent location We waited an hour for breakfast and ended up leaving without eating … staff were pretty disorganized
- 5/5
Check in was superb.
- 4/5
Extremely nice staff and good central location. Not super fancy accommodations and not brand new but nice enough. Definitely an issue with homeless people on nearby sidewalks, some fairly belligerent. No reflection on the hotel but something to keep in mind about the area.
- 4/5
Bathroom is too small and not well thought out. AC controls confusing.
- 5/5
Very friendly staff, comfortable bed and desk to work at. Centrally located to music venues and a wide variety of restaurants.
- 5/5
Great front staff. Gym good lap pool nice temp. Good location
- 5/5
Everyone is professional, polite, accommodating and just plain nice. Words cannot adequately describe the beautiful facility. Definitely our Austin destination!
- 5/5
Staff was friendly and the property was very clean
- 2/5
The cocktails at the bar were good, but there is no service, either on the terrace or in the dining room, on a Friday night. The bathtub was all chipped and the coffee maker didn't work. It's really too expensive for what it is.
- 5/5
Lovely hotel, beautiful large room, excellent friendly staff.
- 3/5
Caroline gave us food poisoning and the fork service was terrible.
- 5/5
Staff is phenomenal xoxo
- 1/5
first at all the fridge at the room not working, ill try to call service room from my room and the phone not working, hair at the bed
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel with lovely bar that overlooks Congress Avenue. The only negative I have is that they do not have room service.
- 5/5
It was a very clean hotel and very comfortable
- 5/5
Great front desk support!
- 5/5
Wonderful place to during my visit to Austin for the WEC race weekend, would 1000% stay again. Staff was great, so helpful and super courteous.
- 5/5
Excellent hotel with a great staff. It is right in downtown Austin so you walk to most everything. Great place to stay if you are going to the Paramount for a show.
- 3/5
There are no shuttles for the airport, Food is fairly priced but not very good, even breakfast.
- 5/5
Beautiful facility, and the staff is top notch!
- 5/5
Fantastic customer service.
- 2/5
Terrible service, poor management, and dated interior. Don't be tempted by the food and beverage credits -- I was effectively unable to use them, due to poor service. It is fine if all you are looking for is a bed, and is by no means the worst hotel I have stayed at. But the quality is not befitting of the price point. I might stay here again in a pinch, but only if all nearby competitors are booked. Be aware of the large homeless population outside. This will be an issue with any hotel in the area, but does put a damper on the prime location.
- 4/5
Small tiny room
- 4.5/5
Squishy pillows and size of first room
- 5/5
Loved the hotel, and the location was super. However best part of the stay was the front desk staff, really amazing. Can't wait to stay at Royal again.
- 4/5
I loved this hotel - the ambience, staff, rooms, etc. And being in the center of downtown Austin was fantastic. I could walk everywhere I needed to go. Proximity to walking trails on Lady Bird Lake is a plus. I did have an issue with ants in my room on the last day, which I told the staff about. Overall, I would stay here again.
- 5/5
Great room!! Got an upgrade. Comfortable & roomy!! Great location. Did not hear any noise! Enjoyed food and drink in upstairs bar. Sat outside on patio and enjoyed the atmosphere 😊
- 5/5
The staff was amazing, and so many great places In Walkable distance!
- 5/5
Awesome. Hotel is beautiful. Room was squeaky clean. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Will be back for my next Austin visit!
- 5/5
Perfect!!
- 5/5
Everyone was professional, kind, accommodating and friendly. We’ll be back! Thanks.
- 5/5
We loved being able to stay right next door to the Paramount! Very convenient location, and we enjoyed a nice meal at the hotel restaurant. Staff were all helpful and friendly. Highly recommend if you are looking for a nice downtown stay!

Excellent customer service
- 5/5
Hotel was very clean . Indoor pool was cute . Staff was very attentive and always with a smile
- 5/5
The hotel was beautiful and the staff was wonderful. There’s just a lot of homeless across the steer that makes walking around feel uncomfortable.
- 4/5
Don’t assume housekeeping will take care of your room- must be requested- didn’t learn about this until we returned from a hot dirty day and just wanted to get into a clean bed and it was not attended to from the night before
- 5/5
Elegant place
- 5/5
The front desk agent was welcoming and professional.
- 5/5
Very nice hotel, great location. Large rooms and good service. All details in room were great. Only downside was expensive parking and no AC in the elevator, not much in halls either. AC fine in room.
- 5/5
The property is a classic and the staff are “top-notch”. Although a little pricey, when attending a performance at the Paramount, it’s hard to beat. We will be back.
- 5/5
Room was beautiful Restaurant Delicious
- 5/5
Location was perfect for us - walkable to just about everywhere we wanted to go - service and hotel overall were great
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, very friendly staff, comfortable stay!
- 5/5
Excellent restaurant. Excellent t bed and linens.
- 5/5
The hotel was amazing and accommodating! Felt great to be able to come to Austin and relax and see some nice views! Also it’s very close to the bars on 6th street!
- 5/5
The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel has unique charm.
- 5/5
I love the room and its aesthetic. I love that the place has a pool and gym. I commend the staff for being pleasant and efficient.
- 5/5
The property was extremely clean and the staff was very attentive to our needs.
- 5/5
I will definitely recommend to my friends visiting Austin.
- 1/5
The staff was amazing. So incredible and helpful. We arrived with our 4 small children and dog. They helped and accommodated our kids from the get go. We were given a room on the 16th floor- I should have asked for something lower, I just assumed it was all that was left since it was July 4 and we booked last minute. Shortly after getting ourselves and belongings to our room, the emergency alarms began going off. We had to climb down the flights of stairs with four kids (two crying hysterically) and dog. It was a false alarm- thank god. The staff helped relocate us to a room closer to the ground floor and was very apologetic and helpful. I feel for them and this very unfortunate situation, and commend how they handled it!
- 5/5
Very nice hotel centrally located with amazing staff. Each employee was friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Great Hotel and great staff.
- 4/5
The only issue we had were the hallways to the rooms and elevators were warm with no air conditioning. If you enjoy staying in a historical hotel with classic architecture and nice, comfortable rooms with a great location in Downtown Austin. The Stephen F Austin Hotel is a bargain price.
- 5/5
Very nice staff, room was clean, would recommend it to anybody
- 5/5
Great view off 2nd floor Balcony of Austin, TX
- 5/5
I liked setting out on the balcony and drinking a glass of wine . When in Austin it’s the perfect place to stay.
- 3/5
Additionally, I found the $50.00 parking fee to be outrageous, even though the hotel is located near the Capitol. Also, we were scared to walk at night because there were people in the streets who looked homeless. I found the $50 parking fee to be excessive, even though the hotel is located near the Capitol. Additionally, we felt unsafe walking at night due to the presence of people on the streets who seemed homeless. On a positive note, the staff was very friendly. The photos on the website suggest that the hotel is newer; however, the carpets on the 12th floor appear old and have a musty odor. On a positive note, the lobby was nice, and the staff was friendly.
- 5/5
Great experience will stay again
- 5/5
Unique hotel with a lot of charm and extremely helpful/friendly staff
- 5/5
Great location, large rooms. Restaurant and lobby just OK
- 5/5
Our second visit was as great as the first. Friendly and helpful staff who provided a room upgrade. Expedia VIP service was excellent. Highly recommend.
- 3/5
The air conditioning was also not steady. It would turn on and get to the desired temperature, then immediately stop and get very warm, then it would power up and get cold again, then warm, etc. And finally, on my last day (@5:00 am and on my way to the airport) when I texted the valet service that I was on my way down, there was no response as there had been usually. After waiting around for a bit, I finally asked the front desk person if anyone was working valet. He then went over to the valet attendant who was sleeping in the lobby & had not received my text alert. When he awoke, he was in no hurry to help, but rather, kept us waiting even further. This was my 2nd stay at this hotel & had not had any issues during the 1st visit, so was quite surprised at the level of service during my recent stay.

Great location and nice outdoor balcony attached to the bar. Staff is very friendly. We were offered room service but never received it. Requested coffee for the room and it turned out to be decaf, fortunately there is coffee in the lobby.
- 5/5
Great Hotel. Very convenient. Love the second floor outdoor area. Great service. We will be staying again.
- 5/5
Great location and amenities
- 4/5
It was a nice quiet place to stay
- 5/5
Very comfortable beds. The room was lovely. I would stay here again when visiting Austin.
- 5/5
We loved this hotel. It was a great stay.
- 5/5
I love everything about this hotel and stay by here often for many years
- 3/5
Hallway noise easily entered room throughout the night. Could use better soundproofing to hall. Our room was unfortunately at eye level with condensers in courtyard. Not much can be done about that aside from infrastructure changes w hotel.
- 5/5
Lots of fun
- 5/5
Great location in downtown.
- 5/5
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Great facility great staff
- 5/5

- 5/5
The Stephen F. Austin is a lovely hotel. It’s very convenient to downtown activities. The staff couldn’t be nicer. Two thumbs up!
- 5/5
Amazing hotel, as much as its a little away from the popular area its only a walk away, the staff are lovely and the rooms as out of this world
- 5/5
Nice, good location, Friendly staff, nice hotel bar
- 5/5
Great location!
- 5/5
I liked everything in this hotel. Its walkable, in a pretty safe zone, really clean and the food was delicious
- 5/5
I love it. Its pretty close to the 6th street, food waa DELICIOUS. Overall a 10/10
- 4/5
Loved the historic ambiance of the hotel. We generally avoid generic "modern" hotel chains & try to seek out unique hotels with a deep connection to the city. The 2nd floor bar with outdoor seating on the balcony was wonderful! We ate at both on-site restaurants. Quite impressed with our dinner at the Roaring Fork. Incredible food & Ty was the best waiter we had during our entire trip. The front desk staff was hit or miss. Maybe some were recently hired? Location of hotel was perfect for exploring downtown (& beyond) by foot. Room was very clean but furniture showed some wear & tear. The bed were heavenly! But we were never able to sleep in too late because of noise. We could hear our neighbors talking. One morning it was someone repairing the ice machine in the hallway well before 8AM! We could hear morning street noise even in our 7th floor room. But downtown Austin is vibrant so probably a risk you take staying downtown? Overall, we enjoyed out stay here but not sure we would stay here again. We would definitely return to the Roaring Fork and the 2nd floor bar however!
- 5/5
It is a nice room, but smallish. The bathroom feels cramped, but works just fine.
- 5/5
It was just an over night stay. We had two rooms it was perfect for our visit to Austin. 2nd time staying there. Last year my friend and I stayed 3 or 4 nights. Will certainly stay again.
- 4/5
It was great if expensive
- 5/5
Great spot
- 4/5
The staff are absolutely incredible and lovely views and vibe. Pool was very cold but hot tub was very hot. Would definitely stay here again with my family.
- 4/5
Property was nicely located, staff was friendly. Room was abit small but clean and nice. Hot tub and pool could use a good cleaning. Valet Guys was awesome and so helpful and friendly.
- 5/5
It was a fun and relaxing experience. The staff is friendly and very helpful.

This was a treat for our 40th and Stephen F. Austin did not disappoint.

Room was denied
- 5/5
Great hotel and location
- 4/5
It is a very neat historical building with a great location right near sixth Street and the state capital. A bit overpriced for what was offered. I would think though. The pool area was nice, but the pool and hot tub need to be cleaned and head look like they Have been cleaned recently. The only other annoyance was that we received a VIP coupon for a free drink, but the bar was not open until 830 due to a private event. No alternate accommodations were made. Overall, a very neat facility and a lot of history there with a great location, would highly recommend if you can find a more reasonably priced room.
- 5/5
Great location. Great service. Grand old building. Very enjoyable.
- 5/5
Very nice restaurants in hotel and great terrace on 2 nd floor to people watch and smoke cigars
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel. Definitely a great value, enjoyed the wonderful bar music / terrace, and good restaurant. The hotel is kept very nice and although we had air conditioning issues our last night, the staff tried to help fix the next day. Breakfast across the street is better.
- 5/5
Love this hotel and try and stay here every time I’m in Austin. The bar rocks
- 5/5

So noisy
