Reviews
The hotel is widely praised for its unique architecture, historical significance, and beautiful grounds. However, inconsistent service and lack of amenities, such as refrigerators in rooms and room service, are frequently mentioned issues.
- Unique and beautiful architecture
- Historical significance and interesting history
- Inconsistent service from staff
- Lack of amenities in rooms and hotel
- 5/5
The hotel was beautiful the room was amazing and the staff was friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay again especially with the price so reasonable. I wish the area was a little better built up. A lot of businesses closed but the grounds of hotel and restaurant inside made up for it. Plus easy drive to amazing areas. Thanks for a special girls night
- 3/5
The bath tub was not working. When I told the clerk at departure, he only said that he would report it to maintenance. No apologies. There was no refrigerator in the room
- 4/5
Renovation of the property will be an extensive development, but what is done is a nice boutique hotel & when complete will be a destination to behold.
- 5/5
Loved it. We initially entered the property the wrong way and it took us a minute to figure out where to park and enter, but we got it figured out.
- 4/5
This is a fine hotel. The only issue is the food. Breakfast is only ok, no good coffee.
- 5/5
The hotel is beautiful and the beds were comfy. I wouldn't say I didn't like anything. I was nervous about sleeping in an old mental hospital. I slept great and would stay again.

It was incredible! The history is amazing!Rooms were beautiful! We loved everything!
- 4/5
but the bathrooms were good sized. the "restaurant" was only serving breakfast and was SUPER SUPER slow. bar was good, great bartenders. food choices.were limited but served relatively quickly.and.super good. there are tons of restaurants on Emerson St. wi walking distance. red hot does a good standard breakfast all.day.
- 1.5/5
Iconic architecture. Rooms small but adequate Fitness center a joke. Broken machines. COMPLETELY INADEQUATE. service AWFUL. Front desk clerks were rude and combative
- 4/5
Beautiful hotel and we had a wonderful stay, but there’s definitely some room for improvement. Signage was difficult to follow so we found ourselves turned around quite a few times (eventually we figured it out). Our bathroom floor looked like it hadn’t been cleaned very well and there was a used piece of gum behind our phone when we checked in, neither of which were a huge deal to us and the rest of the room was spotless, so we didn’t bother bringing it to anyone’s attention. The TV remotes/TV settings could benefit from a sleep timer option, but again, super minor inconvenience. Otherwise, the rooms are spacious and modern, beds were comfortable, staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and the overall vibe of the hotel was great. I would definitely stay here again when I’m in the Buffalo area.
- 4/5
My only complaint was with the slow table service and poor breakfast quality. The food and coffee were slow coming. The simple egg, sausage, potatoes and toast meal was over done and the toast was both unbuttered and cold. I’d give it a second chance because they were very short staffed and I want the hotel to succeed. It’s worth a stay.
- 4.5/5
Great value for money in a quiet location. The building has plenty of character with high ceilings and wide corridors. Rooms are well presented. Breakfast was a bit disappointing.
- 1.5/5
Iconic architecture in a great location Worst service. Fitness center pathetic. Most machines non-functional. No one seemed to care.
- 5/5
Gorgeous castle and beautiful inside. The ceiling is so tall! The room was clean and recently renovated, I enjoyed my stay. The only thing that was confusing is that rooms with the odd numbers were in one wing and the rooms with the even were in another one and the staff did not explain this properly, so it took us awhile to find our room. Besides that everything was great.
- 4.5/5
The hotel was so amazing. The architecture and renovation are spectacular. Very convenient location to the highway, and north and south Buffalo. It’s seemed like the bar and restaurant were understaffed. Took a really long time at breakfast to get our food and it was wrong. The bartender was in the weeds when we went in for a late night drink.
- 2/5
Cool hotel, love the actual hotel Its proximity to the psych ward
- 3/5
This hotel is a great start to a great idea but they fall a bit short of a true restoration/revival of this historic old building. The grounds are a mess and badly in need of an overhaul. Also, some basic music in the common areas would add to some kind of vibe (whether chill current music or general music of the period). It is totally silent and kind of empty. So, if they were able to really put the capital into making this at least a near-luxury hotel or kitschy boutique one, they’d have a hit. In current form, it was boring. Also, I will say that the excuse for a breakfast was one of the worst meals we were ever served. The gentleman at the front desk was great.
- 5/5
Great staff, clean rooms and beautiful property.

This property was described on Expedia as a boutique hotel. It is a large former mental asylum built in 1880. In the lobby there are pictures of patients, artifacts that belonged to the patients, and stories about horrific episodes during their time in the asylum. Many patients were women who were committed by their husbands in the 1920s and 1930s for being “hysterical housewives” and received electroshock treatment as a cure. It is also located in the middle of the Buffalo State campus?? This hotel has a bad energy and it not a place to enjoy a relaxing weekend. We stayed one night. I felt like I was in an episode of “American Horror Story” walking the through the corridors where our room was located. If you enjoy the brutal history of the treatment of the mentally ill or people that were committed against for being hard to deal with or gay this is the hotel for you! Expedia needs to change the description of this hotel on their AP.
- 5/5
An interesting stay in a very historic building
- 4/5
The bartender is always so friendly and accommodating! We love him! We go to the hotel bar just to hang out with him. And he's always got our beer. The bathrooms in the rooms are not the cleanest. The rooms need refrigerators. None of the rooms have them, no matter how expensive the room is. We stay at other hotels just because the other ones have refrigerators and The Richardson does not!
- 3.5/5
It was clean & close to the AKG museum. Close to a bus stop to take you to City hall. Walkable to restaurants & coffee shops. Park designed by Olmsted out in front which you could walk around. Not very safe at night to walk around the neighborhood.
- 5/5
Wonderful stay at the Richardson Hotel in Buffalo. So much character, a reflection of the history, art and architectural art heritage of the city. The hotel isn't "downtown", but it's central, around the corner from the AKG Art Museum and adjacent Elmwood Ave nightlife and restaurants. Really attractive, comfortable rooms (20-ft ceilings and windows!). Surrounded by trees and green, perfect for running or walking. Supre-friendly, knowledgeable and engaging staff. Restaurant had really good menu and food and the bar had novel themed cocktails. Now that I know what this hotel is like I wouldn't stay anywhere when visiting Buffalo.

Exceptional restored National Historic Registry property, great value as well.
- 5/5
The atmosphere was incredible. To stay in a building such as this was truly unique. Definitely recommend. the hotel is wonderfully updated and renovated keeping the original charm of the building. location was on point and the grounds were lovely to walk around. Plenty of parking. No hand soap in bathroom asked a maid and was told they were all out. Never got any, not a huge downers as there was shower gel and we bought a small one at cvs the next day but was a bit funny.

- 5/5
Very nice staff! Interesting, historical property. Spacious rooms.
- 5/5
Very unique building, cool architecture, good location, room was very spacious and clean. Would absolutely stay there again.
- 4/5
Few aspects of the hotel are not great. It is "cashless" meaning they cannot change large bills in case you would like to tip services. Our room showed slight wear and tear, broken soap dish and rust on a faucet, small but took notice. Also found the mattress rather hard.
- 4/5
Such a beautiful building, a wonderful stay! Great area, clean room, and a nice little museum/architectural exhibition on the ground floor. Only small thing was housekeeping knocked on the door when we had do not disturb, then the next day didn't come when we didn't have the sign up, but overall very nice beautiful room and building and would come again for our next stay in Buffalo. Probably the best value for the area.
- 4/5
No refrigerator in our room.
- 4/5
Beautiful building, amazing history, kind staff, comfortable rooms. No refrigerator in our room.

A very pleasant surprise for someone who prefers to stay away from chains. The facility is well remodeled with historical elements left intact. Rooms and shared spaces are clean and rich in detail. Will return.

Clean room, beautiful building, interesting history- enjoyed the walking tour!
- 5/5
The historical building was fantastic and its location is very convenient to showing, restaurants, attractions, and lovely neighborhoods. Would definitely stay here again!
- 5/5
The hotel's locale is excellent being nearby the AKG and the Elmwood neighborhood.
- 5/5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Richardson Hotel. The room was clean and the staff was very friendly. The history of the hotel is very unique and interesting. I would highly recommend staying there.
- 3/5
The hotel did not seem very full, so it would’ve been nice if they offered us a free upgrade. Unique architecture and interesting history
- 5/5
Bar lounge had some food and drinks to offer Rooms were very clean and beds comfortable Beautiful hallways
- 4/5
Room clean
- 5/5
The historic architecture of the hotel is on display at every turn. The restoration work is beautiful, and they way they maintained elements of the old while modernizing the structure makes it an experience to visit. The rooms are very comfortable, with incredibly high ceilings and all updated amenities. The wide corridors, old carved staircase, are offset by modern conveniences. The parking lot was small but we arrived late in the evening and still found parking close to the entrance.
- 5/5
The hotel has a unique history with an updated touch. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The lounge/bar was nice to hang out, we had a Caesar salad and a pizza were delicious. Would stay there again!
- 4/5
Easy and secure parking, excellent but small bar. Very small restaurant but food was pretty good.
- 5/5
Beautiful property with wonderful grounds.
- 5/5
If you love art, especially art of the past decade, you will love this hotel. The art is EVERYWHERE. It made us smile and smile. The hotel is well designed, has a very good restaurant and a well-located, lively bar, and is a 15-minute walk from the art museum/waterfront and three minutes from the riverwalk. Not a lot of restaurants close by, but we did find one very good restaurant a 12-minute walk away and the hotel's own restaurant is very good.
- 5/5
This hotel is so lovely! The room was spacious and clean. The bathroom was roomy too. I love the hallway seating areas. The south side has a nice view of the park. It was quiet and comfortable. The bar was really nice too!
- 4/5
Beautiful property and exceptional service!I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this beautiful hotel. The rooms are gorgeous, and the regal atmosphere made me feel like I was staying in a castle. The staff went above and beyond to be friendly and helpful. My only critique is that the TV experienced a minor connection issue, frequently cutting in and out. However, this didn't ruin a truly wonderful and memorable experience.
- 5/5
We loved The Richardson hotel! Amazing! Going back next week!
- 5/5
The bar man was very helpful
- 5/5
I had a wonderful stay at The Richardson! My room was modern and lovely. The hotel is brimming with character, history, and beauty. The location is convenient. There is free and ample parking. There is a small museum on the lower level, a restaurant bar, and gym. The staff was attentive and pleasant. We will definitely be staying at the Richardson again.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel and convenient location
- 4/5
Very clean! If this is your first time in Buffalo, please know this was a hospital for insane and mentally ill in the 1900s- I know it’s not noted anywhere. The hotel is clean and very well maintained BUT there is a heavy an eerie feeling once you enter the building.
- 5/5
the history was great the way it was modernize and built into rooms was beautiful.
- 3/5
Bar was fine, breakfast was terrible and the service was subpar. Maybe it was the servers first day. Coffee was cold, eggs were served without meet… water given after several requests.
- 5/5
A former psychiatric hospital turned into an amazing hotel right on the campus of Buffalo State College. A surprising hidden gem. The hallways are tall and wide, and the rooms have high ceilings and are updated and comfortable. A very enjoyable stay.
- 5/5
the historically minded. We really enjoyed our stay. We were introduced to the architecture of Buffalo which houses structures that rival those we visited in Europe. Highly recommend for those with the interest.
- 5/5

Really enjoyed our stay. Nevertheless although I genuinely rate this hotel 5* The breakfast that morning was a total and unmitigated disaster, despite the General Manager's intervention and especially the waitress' extraordinary efforts way, way, above and beyond to soothe patient waiting customers, and one or two less patient... The dining room emptied of patrons some of which had waited 70 minutes for their order to appear. Three patient tables remained while a dish or two turned up for missing customers. Apparently a new chef from The Dominican Republic had been hired that day, who only read and spoke Spanish. He was actually given a menu in Spanish, but apparently did not know how to cook the menu items, or cope with permutations. Order was taken immediately. We waited 45+ minutes. My daughter was then served well poached "Eggs Benedict" in some kind of cheese sauce. My omelette arrived too. It was very nice indeed, but our waitress finally admitted that she actually cooked it herself! Now that is a First in my book! <8-O
- 5/5
Architecture was awing-the museum re the history of the hotel was inspired- bar was great as was the music and the bartender. Food was delicious. Parking on site no fee
- 5/5
I will be staying here when I travel to Buffalo for work from now on! Love it.
- 5/5
Loved it old architecture
- 5/5
The hotel is so quiet. You hear nothing within your room, which is non existent nowadays, with the cookie cutter franchise hotel chains. All kinds of quiet, well lit, comfortable places in the hotel, to sit and read, on comfortable couches and chairs by the historic windows. The hotel is majestic and the rich history is great. I love the history museum in the Lower Level. No extra charges: Free Parking No resort fees Free, really nice, work out facility, open 24 hours. Nearby, 10 minute walk to Elmwood Avenue: Great bars, quick places to eat, awesome Pubs, and finer dining restaurants on Elmwood Ave. Incredibly diverse neighborhood. Everyone is so nice and accepting. Didn't have a bad meal or experience on Elmwood Ave for the week we were at The Richardson. I cannot recommend The Richardson, the hotel staff, the area or our experience, any higher than "Incredible" It's now our "go to" hotel every time we come to Buffalo. Buffalo people are so darn nice.❤️
- 2/5
The room was comfortable and the historical site fascinating but the staff service was lacking. I had problems with extra charges, which I had trouble le getting resolved. The staff seemed irritated and kept passing the problem along to other staff. Breakfast in the hotel was not good, cold coffee and overwhelmed staff.
- 5/5
Staff was amazing, restaurant and bar were great, lots of history. Can’t wait to go back!
- 5/5
A beautiful restoration of a historic property, we were tremendously impressed by everything at the Richardson. We will make it a point of staying again whenever we are in the region.
- 5/5
Building was gorgeous 😍 rooms were too. Only complaints I have is there was no refrigerator or microwave and no work space.
- 5/5
It’s a beautiful place and the rooms a modern, professional and large - lots of space.
- 5/5
Such a cool place to stay. Highly recommend!
- 4/5
The rooms and facilities are excellent, with a distinctive character that sets it apart. Be prepared for a bit of walking — the scale of the building adds to the experience, but it is expansive. One drawback was a strong “cheap soap” scent in the room, which detracted from an otherwise high-quality stay. The bar is well worth a visit - the bartender is excellent and adds to the overall experience. For a slightly offbeat and architecturally interesting stay, it is a place I would return to.
- 5/5
Beautiful building, clean room.

Like staying in a castle. So unique and beautiful
- 5/5
Clean room and nicely decorated. Very comfortable bed.
- 3/5
Free parking in the Old Montreal is unheard of so it’s a huge bonus, especially since it comes with in and out privileges. The hotel itself is average and seems unfinished with some construction going on and poor sound insulation. We had a one bedroom suite on 2nd floor right next to stairs and elevator and could hear people talking through the door and walking above us. We asked to be moved and were told that everything was booked even though hotel seemed empty on Sunday and Monday nights. The apartment itself is adequate but has no AC in the bedroom and no cooking supplies in the kitchen including paper towels or salt but comes with decent storage in the bedroom and ample shower with nice bath products. The bed was comfortable and so was the sofa in the living area. Internet was also very fast which was an asset for working remotely. Finally, there was no view from our suite 207 as it was facing a wall so it was relatively dark inside. Hope this helps other guests decide where to stay and what to consider.
- 4/5
The breakfast service is not good. We waited for 1 hour to be served. They should make it continental until they fix the issues.
- 5/5
Beautiful historic hotel in a great location.
- 5/5
An unexpected surprise on our recent visit to Buffalo. What started as a hotel choice close to Buffalo State University for a campus tour, turned into one of the highlights of our time in the area. Highly recommend to short or long stay visits.
- 5/5
Always a terrific stay — amazing property, easy parking, unbeatable location, great bar.
- 5/5
Don was an incredible host- he made sure I was comfortable and content for my stay. The property is a testament to the preservation efforts taking place in Buffalo and I’m so grateful the Richardson Olmsted was saved from being demolished. Thank you for the wonderful stay- I will be back!
- 5/5
Looks like something out of harry potter when you pull up. Beautifully maintained, lots of interesting rooms / galleries / exhibits which explain the history. Clean rooms, spacious, high ceilings, lots of windows. Would pick this over your average hotel chain any day
- 5/5
Very nice.
- 3/5
The place is gorgeous but where do I begin? The service is well below the price. My room was clean bus musty smelling and freezing (would have been nice if they turned the heat on in advance considering it is Buffalo in winter). Only one person took orders at the restaurant and also only one person serving breakfast (and she was annoyed that I came down in the last 1/2 hour). No bell person to help at all. The lobby elevators are a big run-around with no one to help with your bags. The front entrance was littered with trash and had a chicken fence around it. There were bight construction lights shining through the windows. The receiver of the phone in my room was not charged so I could not answer the front desk when they called at 11am to let me know I had to check-out even though I asked for a late check out when I checked-in late the night before --and I was one of only 10 guests in the hotel… Overall I felt like a nuisance to the staff. The museum in the basement was very interesting but it feels the place is struggling financially and they are not going out of their way to make the guests happy. It would be shame if the hotel went broke.
- 4/5
The room was very comfortable but the shower floor was VERY slippery. As soon as it got wet, it became slippery. Everything else was great!
- 5/5
The place is super clean, well equipped and there are a lot of great spots to explore within the property. Totally worth the visit and especially if you need a Hogwarts school kind of experience , then you would love it. Would recommend it to everyone.
- 5/5
An absolutely amazing hotel. I loved the history and prominence of the building. Truly beautiful architecture and so sympathetically restored. Despite the history, I felt only good vibes. Everything screams "luxe". The staff are friendly and kind. The bed was super comfortable, I loved the pillows. My room was on the ground floor so it was a little dark. The restaurant and bar were lovely and the food so good. Some small criticisms were that the lamp and some of the plugs in the room didn't work. Also, breakfast was a strange experience. A weird lullaby was playing on repeat the whole time, and also no teaspoons were provided for my tea. The breakfast food was mediocre. The server seemed quite nervous. Other than that, I would absolutely recommend this hotel. The museum underneath was so interesting.
- 3/5
The gym could use a vacuum and shades on the windows. The heat is on and the sun shines in the windows and even though it was in the 30s while I was there, it was way too hot in there. And that fan contraption is way to loud and not effective. There was also no water available. I went to the gym three days in a row, and each time, the water dispenser was empty. This is a four-star property. It did not feel like it.
- 2/5
No fridge. Twin bed. Sheets weren't on our bed. Had to come back downstairs for another room assignment. Clerk at desk was very rude.
- 5/5
clean and cool vibe
- 4/5
The Richardson was a pleasant stay. The hotel was clean and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Overall, it was a comfortable experience. One area for improvement would be the guest amenities—expanding these offerings could make the stay even more enjoyable. I would still recommend it for those visiting the area.
- 4/5
It was a little cold with the tall ceilings but the historic architecture was lovely.
- 5/5
Amazing
- 5/5
This space was so unique, lots of history, fantastic restoration! The room was lovely, amazing tall ceilings, clean, spacious, beautiful window details and so very quiet.
- 5/5
Found this hotel on Expedia and I have to say, it was fabulous. The architecture is beautiful and the room I booked which was a king, was perfect. Comfortable, clean and quiet and a lovely bar downstairs. Will definitely stay here again. Great value as well.
- 5/5
Everything was great
- 5/5
Lovely building and staff. Exceptionally clean and comfortable. Nice location close to the AKG.
- 4/5
Beautiful hotel, unfortunately they did not clear the ice in front of hotel so I fell, but the hotel and room is really nice
- 5/5
My son stated that he enjoyed the one night stay.
- 2/5
The plugs were too loose to hold a phone charger, half didn’t work at all. There was no space to hang out unless you’re laying in bed. The room was very small and awkwardly laid out. The bathroom was missing a door knob. We were watching a movie and it just blipped back to the guide several times. It was just a kind of annoying place to stay especially for the price being in the mid tier
- 5/5
Room was spotless and staff was very friendly
- 5/5
Nice hotel
- 5/5
The hotel was very clean and unique. Staff was pleasant and we enjoyed our stay very much.
- 5/5
Staff was extremely courteous, and room was spotless.
- 5/5
Such an amazing building. All the staff was very friendly. The bed was really comfortable.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel! Spotless throughout.
- 5/5
Great location, great staff - Jessica was very helpful

Perfect in every aay
- 3/5
The Good - This place is gorgeous. The exterior is architecturally fascinating. The interiors have been utterly transformed into a truly magical space. The rooms are clean and well appointed. The new "museum" space on the first floor is fascinating and absolutely worth a walk through. When we stopped at the hotel bar, our bartender (Beaux?) was very friendly, well informed and very attentive. The Bad - We travel a lot and we have a standard rule about hotel food that we rarely deviate from, but it was really cold out and we rolled the dice. Unfortunately we got exactly what we expected, a cheeseburger and boneless chicken that were well below even chain restaurant standards. Not that we were going to bring leftovers back, but there's also no fridge in the rooms for beverages or otherwise (there is an ice bucket). The Ugly - The wi-fi here is beyond awful. We were kicked off every 10 to 15 minutes and would have to log back in (non stop until we finally gave up). Forget trying to do any work here without a hotspot. Just as annoying, watching TV was impossible. Regardless of what channel you chose it would pixelate and then crash every 10 minutes. We brought it up to the front desk, but there was no change. Also, although there was a smart TV in the room but it was placed in a kiosk mode so there is no way to access your own content (Netflex, Prime, etc.)
- 4/5
The only real issue was you could only connect to one devise at a time for WiFi. Room was spotless, staff were very nice
- 5/5
Loved the room, the character, the details and the breakfast.
- 4/5
Yes, rooms were clean and staff most friendly and accommodating. Restaurant could have more to offer on the menu and earlier and later hours to accommodate customers arriving earlier as well as later in the evening possibly till 12:30 - 1:00 am.
- 3/5
the hotel itself was beautiful but the food for the guest looked not fresh. The location is not that great. No nice restaurants nor stores around that area.
- 5/5
The staff were all incredible throughout my stay. I ended up being snowed in for an extra day. The restaurant and bar are super cute! Highly recommend checking out this hotel. The museums in the area are really cool and Elmwood is loaded with tons of bars, cafes and restaurants so you have lots of options nearby as well.
- 5/5
Beautiful!

Very accommodating and understanding staff.

Beautiful building and rooms!
- 5/5

Great stay in an historic building. Rooms were comfortable and beautiful in a boutique way. Staff friendly and the common areas were outstanding with many features retained. Fireplaces, stained glass and tiled floors. The pub was a big plus. Friendly and cozy. Food was really good and covktails first rate. Ill stay here again.
- 5/5
Tucked away but well worth the hunt! A wonderful redevelopment of an amazing property. Very quiet, with amazing high-ceiling rooms. A must for architecture buffs.
- 5/5
The hotel bar is wonderful and the bartender, Nat, is one of a kind. She was pleasant, funny, personable, and gave great suggestions for food and things to do in the area. Worth staying at the hotel just to meet Nat!
- 3/5
The room was not in great condition the walls were very dirty with a lot of scuffs and marks. The shower was also not the cleanliest, but it got the job done. I am not one to complain. It wasn't a bad stay all in all.
- 5/5
Large spacious rooms. Museum like inside
- 4/5
Great staff!
- 4/5
Our stay at The Richardson Hotel was very good everything was in great shape and the bed was very comfortable. We loved the amazing exterior and interior design of the hotel and also loved learning all about the history of the building in the onsite museum on the bottom level. There were only 2 things that we would've liked to see better. I would have loved to have a small fridge in the room and lastly the front desk was hit and miss if someone was there but all of the people who worked there were very nice and helpful.
- 5/5
Hotel is great, rooms comfortable, breakfast was fine, but the real draw is the architecture and location. Central to many fine amenities in the city, the building itself is stunning and greatly enhanced the joy returning to the room repeatedly.
- 5/5
Awesome historical building that is now a hotel
- 4/5
But always one the best hotels in Buffalo, New York
- 5/5
amazing property, friendly staff
- 4/5
Great
- 4/5
The hotel is having HVAC issues and common areas like the bar and breakfast room are FREEZING. building itself is gorgeous. Rooms are good not great. 3.25 stars
- 5/5
This is a very special hotel! The architecture of the Richardson is one of a kind. It’s a unique experience staying here. Location in the north end of Elmwood Village couldn’t be better. Easy parking and walkable to great restaurants, shops and the art gallery. We loved the hotel bar! Special shoutout to the sweetest bartender <3 Will definitely recommend to friends.
- 2/5
In addition to the issues mentioned above, there were bugs in our room—the creepy, crawly kind—which made the stay even more uncomfortable. To make matters worse, during our first visit in November we woke up to no hot water. This is completely unacceptable, especially in Buffalo, New York, where cold and snowy weather makes hot water a basic necessity, not a luxury. The continental breakfast, which is free, was a pathetic joke. Of course. We ended up going out for breakfast. Honestly, based on my last two stays I cannot recommend this hotel in good consciousness.
- 2/5
No mini fridge in our room. No hot water one day. Female staffer extremely rude.
- 4/5
The hotel is very inviting. The room was cozy and very quiet. The grounds are beautiful especially during a snowy evening.
- 4/5
The hotel is absolutely beautiful!!! Super unique but only downfall is we were checking in two hours later then usual due to weather conditions and we were told the restaurant was closed so that was disappointing that we couldn’t access the restaurant for dinner .
- 3/5
Beautiful space but not well managed and not a full service hotel. Bar is great but very limited hours and “breakfast” was terrible, basically cereal and English muffins. Minimal staff. A few at front desk were helpful and props to lovely bartender Marty. They also have some heating issues, with pockets of cold spaces and lukewarm showers. Too bad because the building is architecturally very cool.
- 5/5
Comfortable and a unique experience.
- 5/5
Great architecture and interior design. Nicely appointed rooms. Comfortable bed. And I saw an attractive topless girl in the corridor. Bonus!
- 5/5
The room was spectacular, with beautiful attention to everything to make our stay enjoyable
- 5/5
Beautiful room, so cleanly and one of the coolest stays around. My only ding to the stay is the tv does not offer any streaming services and limited channels other than that perfect stay!
- 4/5
Nice hotel, comfy bed. Very pretty, well done remodel. Only loss of a star due to a very subpar breakfast, something you expect at Motel 6. Actually, I think Motel 6 is better for breakfast. Not even cream cheese for the so-so bagels. Nothing hot at all. Big disappointment. I'd rather pay for breakfast than be fed this way. Overall a great hotel with a terrible wake up meal. And the bar closes far too early. At 9pm they were closed.
- 5/5
Stay at this property every year. Staff was excellent and the property is unique. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
Excellent boutique hotel choice!
- 5/5
The room was amazing. It felt very cozy but still had an upscale look to it. The entire building itself is magnificent. All the staff was extremely friendly. I will definitely stay again.
- 5/5
The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, the staff was friendly as could be! The Richardson felt like the center of action -- the holiday market out front was incredible, with people everywhere having a good time under the beautiful lights in this iconic architectural marvel. And once we were upstairs, it was quiet and cozy. Perfect spot.
- 5/5
Rhe property is amazing and the staff are too. Jessica made our stay special
- 5/5
My new favorite stay in Buffalo! The hotel is a beautiful tribute to its own heritage. The room was so comfortable and quiet, the common areas are beautifully preserved and restored. I walked the 4 floors in awe. This is a must-see property. I will be staying there again.
- 5/5
It’s just a beautiful property. The architecture is renowned. The hotel was very quiet. I stayed there in 2020 under other ownership and there is a definite difference. I preferred the previous stay which was much more lively and welcoming - so it’s just a different vibe now and that’s okay! Reasonable rate, clean, quiet and like walking around a museum.
- 5/5
Architectural Masterpiece! Interesting history. Beautiful hotel with the most wonderful staff! Spotlessly clean rooms that were so comfortable! Nice bar/ restaurant with such good food and to top it off a very capable bartender!
- 5/5
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the historic Richardson Hotel. It is a beautiful "old" hotel with modern rooms and it's own unique charm. I enjoyed the architecture of the building and the wonderfully high ceilings throughout the building and rooms as well as the extra wide hallways that you just don't see anywhere else. I had a great night sleep which is not always common when spending a night away from home.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel with a fascinating history.
- 4/5
It was nice and quiet
- 5/5
Everything was wonderful, the staff were great!
- 5/5
Great hotel, great service.
- 5/5
The Richardson provided a truly exceptional experience. Our room was excellent—spacious, clean, and luxurious—offering a perfect private sanctuary. The hotel premises were absolutely stunning, featuring a beautiful blend of classic and modern elegance. Crucially, the staff was consistently friendly, attentive, and incredibly helpful, ensuring a seamless and memorable stay from check-in to check-out.
- 4/5
The Richardson is a fabulous looking converted psychiatric hospital. Where my room was attractive and clean, I received no room service in three days. I needed to call the front desk for clean towels. The staff all very friendly. I did like my extremely quiet, very high ceiling room. The food in the bar/restaurant was mediocre. The brrakfast offerings subpar. I would stay there again for the attractive room and convenience of location.
- 5/5
Room was good and great staff!
- 5/5
Amazing service
- 4/5
The hotel is unique and spectacular looking. It is a converted mental health facility, though it was once probably termed an asylum. The room was clean though in three days I had no visit from room service. The restaurant food was fine. The breakfast (included) lack luster. I would stay there again.
- 4/5
I would have fridges in room. Love the heritage still showing.
- 5/5
beautiful hotel, clean and comfortable room, friendly staff, great location.
- 5/5
Amazing experience , less than desired breakfast (bagel , yogurt , cereal) .
- 4/5
Clean room. Courteous staff. Interesting history.
- 5/5
Absolutely stunning facility!
- 5/5
Outstanding!
- 5/5
It was beautiful! The room had a very high ceiling, was well cleaned and the receptionist were very helpful!
- 5/5
The hotel was more than expected. I can’t wait to see what the new management company does with this historical property! Everyone was helpful and I wish I had more time to explore.
- 5/5
We enjoyed our stay at the Richardson Hotel!
- 2/5
The room was great good and small, somthing I would expect. However, they advertized laundry service and there was none. They advertized a full bar and only had beer and wine and not a good variety. No room service, no room cleaning. The "Free" Breakfast was on a platic roll cart and often cold and stale. The front Desk attendant was rude to me and my wife. For the price and service we would have had a better stay at a Courtyard Marriot
- 4/5
The property has limited food option at the moment. Breakfast was limited. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Very unique and historic property. Loved the 20’ ceilings and spacious halls. Beautifully decorated too. Clean lines in the rooms. Comfortable and very quiet.
- 2/5
Great concept, but thus far poor execution. Front door area unwelcoming, doors difficult to use, no one around, garbage cans full, museum TV blaring too loud continuously. Breakfast was a joke. Hallways were nice. Room was adequate.
- 5/5
Very pleasant. Everything was well done and the hotel is beautiful.
- 5/5
Lovely Room
- 3/5
Restaurant was closed. TV didn’t work. Front desk receptionist, Jessica, was rude and unpleasant.
- 1/5
I arrived to check in at the hotel and they overbooked and no longer had the suite we reserved through Expedia. It would have been nice to be notified in advance rather than being disappointed on the spot. Fortunately they had a Double Room but not ideal for a married couple celebrating a birthday.
- 5/5
The Richardson is a unique hotel as it is one of HH Richardsons architectural masterpieces that was fortunately saved from the wrecking ball and is gradually being restored for various uses, the Hotel being the first of those. It is luxury priced but you are really paying to live in a piece of history. The breakfast is a simple continental, and the restaurant that used to be in the building is closed, but plenty of dining & shopping options are steps away in Elmwood. The decor with all of the historical photos plus the architectural museum on the lower level is excellent. A place you need to stay in at least once. We normally stay at my cousin’s but since we weren’t able to on this trip, we chose the Richardson.
- 4/5
Beautiful building! The only drawback was that there was not restaurant or bar operating in the building, yet. They did offer many recommendations in the area, however. Service was good.
- 5/5
Could have used some coffee this morning but everything wS empty
- 4/5
Did not use the gym . Clean room and grounds was nice .
- 5/5
This hotel is absolutely stunning. The building is a true work of art, and everything inside is beautiful. The room was very clean, staff was friendly, and the area is quiet and scenic. It has a lot to offer guests, such as breakfast and even tours in the morning. We will definitely be coming back!
- 5/5
Breakfast was terrible
- 1/5
The hotel is in a lovely, historic building, but that is where its charm begins and ends. I
- 4/5
Trouble with usb outlets — none worked Great building& nice room
- 5/5
Unique, funtoexplore, wide and long hallways, interesting exhibit on renovationon 1st floor, nice central location.
- 5/5
Property has so much character. Lovely place with the charm expected from a renovated building.
- 2/5
Limited tv channels. No housekeeping services for us the 3 days we stayed. I did ask and received an adjustment of my bill.
- 5/5
Excellent
- 5/5
The grounds were unique having the old buildings still standing showing their wear and tear. The hotel offers tours about the history of the area
- 3/5
I liked the historic feel of the building; it has an old-world charm, if slightly rundown. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the rooms were spacious. I splurged on a suite, and due to travel slowdowns, checked in at 11 p.m. The bar was already closed, and the offerings from their "store" were extremely limited, and there were no close convenience stores or restaurants near the location. In the morning, I went to use the in-room coffee machine pod set up that was on a bar in the living room, but not only was it not plugged in, it was far away from any usable outlet. Also, when I went to use the iron and ironing board, the board was out of sorts and needed to be repaired. I hope they can make some thoughtful adjustments to ensure their rooms are fully ready in the future.
- 5/5
This hotel was absolutely stunning!!! Loved all the historical touches and would definitely stay again if I was in the area. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Had an amazing stay at the Richardson. Such a beautiful property. Very comfortable room. Staff members were incredibly nice. Would definitely recommend.
- 5/5
The Richardson will be my new home away from home when we travel to Buffalo. See you Christmas. Just breathtakingly beautiful and the management and staff are wonderful.
- 5/5
The Richardson is a beautiful hotel . 20 foot ceilings and 3 inch wood doors virtually sound proof. The hotel is an architectural masterpiece surrounded by history. Elmwood/Forest Ave has everything a Buffalonian like me or visitor could ever want. Food/ shopping/nightlife or just sights. Liquor license and restaurant on grounds we will be retuning for the holidays. Thank you again for making our stay enjoyable despite the circumstances.
- 5/5
A stunning architectural piece.
- 5/5
Absolutely beautiful and unusual historical building that a portion of it was turned into a hotel and is located next to a college. Had very modern rooms with very tall ceilings and beautiful furnishings. Will definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Interesting Hotel to say the least.
- 3/5
The staff was beyond amazing and so accommodating it made the experience perfect from that perspective.
- 1/5
Awkwardly, Expedia sold us the room but this hotel is new and does not have their booking set with Expedia. So, they didn't have a reservation for us but luckily had a vacancy so could fit us in. The property and staff are great - booking through Expedia was not
- 5/5
Weird but good
- 1/5
Don’t feel comfortable
- 4/5
This is a beautifully restored property that was comfortable. My only issue was navigating around it since at times it was confusing going between the wings of the hotel. The continental breakfast the next morning was a little underwhelming since it was nearly empty - coffee included by 9 am. The staff was friendly and pleasant and very helpful.
- 5/5
Felt like a luxury hotel with ultra high ceilings and 19th century architecture. Room was somewhat small but exceptionally clean and modern. Front desk very friendly and accessible.
- 5/5
This hotel is one of a kind. It's beautiful and the rooms were very comfortable.
- 5/5
A very nice night get away in a beautiful piece of history ! Can’t wait to check it out later on to see if they get the bar and restaurant open.
- 4/5
Strange “vibe” with it being a defunct psych facility but, I guess it’s to be exact
- 4/5
overall 8/10 i just wish there was a microwave on sight somewhere
- 5/5
WOW!! I LOVED this property!! The history is so fascinating and everything inside fits with the charm of the building. I loved the high ceilings and the fact that there was a gym right in the building. We stayed there to attend a concert, which was just a walk down the street. Everything was so clean, safe, close to shopping and restaurants, and literally perfect. We will definitely be back!
- 5/5
It was a very unique property with a lot of history.
- 4/5
The bar and the restaurant were no longer in business. We weren't made aware of this until check in.
- 5/5
What a beautiful hotel. Of the hundreds of hotels I've stayed in, this is clearly one of the most interesting I've been to recently. An architectural gem in Buffalo.
- 4/5
Bed was comfortable and was able to sleep good.
- 3/5
Also the Continental breakfast was very small and very basic. Very limited options.
- 5/5
This place was way beyond my expectations! A true experience! Place was very clean, staff was amazing, and the history is second to none. Definitely will be back!
- 4/5
Beautiful old resorted building. Need to upgrade the breakfast buffet to include a hot table.
- 5/5
Building is really unique, you walk through the history
- 1/5
This former insane asylum promises to be a great, modernized hotel. All a lie. Everything is dark and dingy, with tiny rooms resembling a prison. Worse, the supposedly glamourous grounds are in disrepair and most of the adjacent buildings are genuine mental health facilities, all in the midst of a run-down neighborhood.
- 4/5
Property was nice on current renovation. However, the phone system and staff were not available.
- 2/5
The hotel is an interesting building but the current management should either commit to running it as a hotel or give up. The “breakfast” that was served was on dirty linens that didn’t fit the table and consisted of some wrapped vending machine type pastry and decent coffee. The front desk reception was not attentive to an arriving customer with a reservation. The decor in the hallways and entrance is not consistent with the period of the hotel and the signage is awful. The rooms themselves are beautiful. The hotel needs management that cares.
- 5/5
Great property! Large rooms, nice bar, friendly staff! No complaints !
- 5/5
Very cool hotel! Super creepy but in a goodway
- 3/5
Came for the architecture, which is amazing. $300 a night and was smaller than a European Hotel No way that was a queen bed. No fridge. Breakfast awful, no I mean really awful. Starbucks on campus does not open till noon and no where else close to get coffee. Good Italian across the street for dinner. No one at the desk when we checked out, a phone number for service rang at the front desk. They refused to email me a receipt. Stayed there last year, I will not stay again but I doubt it will be open.
- 5/5
Brittney went above and beyond getting us checked in and familiar with our stay and she was so happy to be of service if needed . This place was beautiful safe quiet and amazing ! Will be back soon
- 5/5
This historical building was beautiful. The bed was so comfortable as soon as my head hit the pillow i was out! It was great for a romantic night away with my husband.
- 5/5
Very nice place to stay
- 4/5
What is most unique about this property that I was unaware of before staying was that 100 years before it was established as a state mental asylum until it shut down in 1974. That gave me and my husband a bit of the heebie jeebies when we got there to be honest. We also noticed a weird hospital sort of antiseptic/cotton gauze bandage smell that seemed to permeate the halls no matter where we walked. The architecture inside was absolutely beautiful and outside it was huge, sprawling and awe-inspiring. Parts of the property buildings are run down and not usable at the moment. So it is decidedly the most unique property I have ever stayed at. It was within walking distance to a concert that the 2 of us went to see, so it was very convenient from that standpoint. Also, the service staff were all very attentive and cordial, and the onsite restaurant had delicious food with fast service. The beds were comfortable and again, it was just a very unique experience we didn't expect before we walked in there. I probably should have done a little reading on the history of the property before booking. Just be aware if that's anything that concerns anyone planning to stay there.
- 2/5
The property itself is quite unique. I have put relatives here 5X. Unfortunately, the hotel is soon likely to be two-star. Lack of room cleaning. I had family in 2 rooms, 1 Cleaned daily, the other never touched. Makes NO sense. Sunday brunch was lovely. Monday morning breakfast, NO MILK. Coffee, NO MILK. Dry cereal with no milk. My 88 year old Dad was like, they must be having $ troubles. In a real hotel, someone would have run to TOPS or Wegman's. Where is the hotel leadership/management? On the way out, at the front desk on a Monday morning there was NO service. It is hard to critique service, when there is NO service to critique. There was a horrid smell near the elevator exit. Was told it was the grease trap. UGH! Who wants to get off the elevator and smell cesspool like odor? The rooms were far enough away to be malodorous free Not sure I will put my family up here when they visit in the future.
- 3/5
The “free” breakfast was pitiful and the room was not serviced. I get no fresh towels but I would have expected at least the garbage to be emptied and the bed made. I paid 315 per night and feel that it was not at all worth it. Very disappointed.
- 5/5
Jessica helped to check us in. She was friendly and helpful. There was a limited Continental breakfast available. It was a comfortable stay overall. What a great experience in this historical place!
- 5/5
Incredible building and great staff
- 5/5
Beautiful and quiet property.
- 5/5
We enjoy the stay
- 4/5
Beautiful structure, great job renovating
- 5/5
Very unique property and friendliest staff
- 5/5
Wonderful hotel and enjoyed learning about the history of the property. We will definitely stay again!
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
I live the Richardson. The architecture is amazing and so is the history. They have a museum with a video that tells about how it became a hotel. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
Unique and beautiful! We have been many times and keep coming back.
- 5/5
The rooms are beautiful, extremely quiet and comfortable. A great night sleep.
- 4/5
Hotel is absolutely beautiful and I love the history of it. We booked a queen room and I felt it was a bit overpriced for how small it was. Staff were wonderful however
- 5/5
Rooms and hallways are incredibly spacious. Quiet on the weekdays, but seemed notably busier on Saturday night into Sunday. Definitely off the beaten path relative to Downtown Buffalo but still walkable, though a bit more challenging in the winter.
- 5/5
The hotel is very cool.
- 5/5
Architectural experience, history, staff and proximity to art establishments makes this a high value property.
- 5/5
Beautiful property! I loved walking around and checking out all the architectural details. The museum on the ground floor was interesting too. It inspired me to go out and see other local buildings.
- 5/5
It was great. Neat place! Clean. Nice staff. Quiet and peaceful
- 5/5
This place was spectacular from check-in to check out! Definitely recommend!
- 1/5
We showed up and our reservation was not in the system. The individual at the hotel was helpful, the individual working for Expedia was not helpful and made it out to feel like it was an inconvenience on our end. Not happy with Expedia based on this experience and how they treat customers when the error is theirs.
- 4/5
Very interesting adaptive reuse of historic site. Excellent as a hotel. Hope service level can keep up, specifically restaurant bar hours. House-keeping is excellent, included breakfast is excellent. Only evening restaurant hours are a little uncertain.
- 5/5
We chose this property because of its incredible history. The restoration has been done respectfully and the span of this building is simply stunning.
- 5/5
We only stayed one night but the bed was comfortable, the room was clean and the hotel was quiet. Breakfast in the morning was very good as well. I didn’t understand the need to hold an extra $100 security deposit on my card at check in but hopefully the hold was released.
- 5/5
We wish the breakfast had more variety. Other then bread and muffin, there was only scrambled egg, bacon, and french toast. Yoghurt, cereals, boiled eggs, veggies, and more fruits would've been nice, especially for kids. Thank you.
- 5/5
The hotel is very nice ,the check in was quick and easy, rooms are very large with a comfortable beds!
- 5/5
Gorgeous rooms
- 1/5
The queen bed was in reality barely a double. In fact a queen size bed wouldn’t have fit into the room which was reminiscent in most details of a tiny very tiny dorm room. No on site restaurant or kitchen service at all when we arrived shortly before dinner time tired and hungry. Extremely understaffed. How they dared to charge what they did for what we got is beyond baffling!
- 5/5
The hotel was amazing! A little upgrade in the breakfast would be a great step forward!!
- 5/5
Our stay was perfect, one of our favorite places to stay in the Buffalo area. Beautiful, comfortable, and clean rooms and spaces. We love that it so convenient to Elmwood Village and our local family.
- 5/5
Absolutely amazing hotel - a completely renovated architectural gem by H.H. Richardson set among 40 acres of an Olmsted-designed park. Outstanding reuse of a fabulous building and gorgeous hotel with excellent service. Loved, loved, loved.
- 5/5
Hotel is close to art galleries and to other shopping areas
- 5/5
Wonderful property & history.
- 5/5
The buildings themselves are absolutely stunning and what they have done with them is amazing. We had wanted to stay there for a long time and took the opportunity to stay in Buffalo prior to a Buffalo Bills game. The Christmas market was icing on the cake.
- 4/5
This is an extraordinary hotel and an architectural gem but wildly overpriced for what it is. It used to be classy when it was hotel Henry but has been downgraded by terrible management, hideous signage, and big photos everywhere instead of tastefully curated local art it once featured. The most frustrating is that they have horrible scented air fresheners everywhere that create a sickening smell. In summary it feels cheap and cheesy since reopening, incredibly sad.
- 5/5
An amazing accommodation! This hotel is one of a kind, with a very interesting history. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. I love the little reading nooks, and the common areas on each floor. I would be delighted to return, and can't recommend highly enough! The staff went above and beyond to accommodate us... five stars!!
- 5/5
As far as eco friendliness - it would be better to provide paper rather than plastic water cups and in the room to reduce plastic waste. Also biodegradable / compostable cutlery at breakfast. Thank you for the paper coffee cups.
- 4/5
-bathrooms are cold, when you get out of the shower, the room is very chilly - showerhead points inward toward the wall, so you aren't feeling the full faucet. I believe its this way because the shower pan is too low and the faucet would flood the room otherwise - bathroom light on either side of the mirror is extremely harsh and its difficult to see yourself - soap dish is mounted right where a person would stand. So you have a choice - either hit the dish or leak the shower. - the instructions for the tv specify using the 'OK' button, of which there was none. It should be updated. - the all-day coffee near the front desk is a lovely idea. The milk furnished for it should be an unflavored milk product that is shelf stable (and it does come in creamer sized) - The bar should be offering glug (mulled wine) or something along those lines for the holidays - the food quality in the continental breakfast is well below par for a hotel at this price point. The quantity of choices is fine, but the quality is lacking.
- 5/5
It's a beautiful building, albeit with some new excessive signage, with very comfortable rooms.
- 5/5
This magnificent building had architectural delights around every corner. The care and craftsmanship used during its restoration is remarkable. It was a pleasure to wander the halls and staircases. The room itself was also very nice with 15 foot ceilings, a luxious bed and very quick and responsive climate control.
- 3/5
Hotel is quite interesting! Room wasn’t the cleanest but staff for breakfast/restaurant were incredible.
- 3/5
Overpriced in my opinion.
- 3/5
The replacement sheets had hair on there as well. Maybe the washing machine or and dryer is not clean
- 4/5
Nice visit. Interesting building. Obliging staff
- 5/5
Very nice building with a good breakfast. Rooms very comfortable for sleeping- quiet, climate controlled and double curtains
- 5/5
Very cool building! Interesting history.
- 5/5
What a wonderful surprise!
- 2/5
The hotel itself is gorgeous to look at. I got a suite because it was my anniversary and I was hoping that it would be fairly spick and span considering how much it cost for a single night but our suite door would not close without myself or my partner putting our full body weight on it and our heat was not working. So, we made sure that our bedroom door was closed and properly locked when it was time for bed. I called multiple times before my visit to ask about early check in for the suite and was told that staff would not be able to give me an answer and that I should keep calling back. However, I had an inkling that the suite I paid for should be available. It was not until I showed up in person, gave my name and shared that I booked the suite, that I was told that I could check in. I most likely won’t be coming back but the place is gorgeous so they certainly get points for that. And I liked the museum area downstairs.
