The staff is very friendly and helpful

When we told the staff that he was acting aggressive and inappropriate, they simply told us they called his room and seemed to not be the aggressor. Instead of investigating and accommodating, they said “we’ll just refund you right now” and requested we not call the police even though we didn’t feel safe in our room. Needless to say, we left that night. Although they seemed apologetic after the fact. They were more concerned about optics than the actual safety of their residents.

Nice large, clean rooms. Close to shops and beaches.

The location was great, the staff was so kind and helpful, and the rooms have been updated. The only downside was the noise - the walls are thin, and if you are on the first floor, you get headlights in your room, parking lot noise, and the sound of walking on the hard floors in the room above you. I heard the entire conversation from the room behind me while in the bathroom, as if they were in my room with me. The bed was comfortable, but if you are a light sleeper like me, it is very noisy if there are any other guests around. Great little spot to grab food and coffee just steps from the property and super easy walk to the beach!

Clean room

For the area, the hotel was a good price and a good budget option. The walls are very thin and we heard our upstairs neighbors all night but it was a good central location. Parking wasn’t the greatest and we couldn’t park on site for one of the nights.

We had a very nice stay at the Shoal Hotel LaJolla Beach. Room is large and was very clean. Location is very close to the beach and public transportation. Also restaurants and grocery store is very close. We enjoyed the hot tub at the end of the day to relax. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. There was nothing to not like as we had an enjoyable stay.

Location by the beach and excellent manager and staff

It’s an upgraded motel… that’s not to say it’s a bad place, but that is what it is. We feel like the pictures were bit misleading, and tried to make it out to be more than it really is. Bed was comfortable and it’s well maintained and clean.

Clean room, comfortable bed, and close to the beach. Convenience store is within easy walking distance. The front desk staff was outstanding - they were so nice and welcoming throughout our stay!! It would have been nice to have a smart TV to be able to log into movie apps, but there is cable and plenty to watch.

The bathroom has a really bad echo. No privacy at all with the sliding door.

Great location. Friendly and helpful receptionist and staff. Walk to the beach. Hotel offers chairs. Pool at the hotel. Very clean, convenient,coffee machine and safe in room. It’s an upgraded inn so not luxurious but big room and everything we needed traveling with two small children

It was great. Quiet and maintained well and a short walk to the beach. It’s not a luxury stay but the room was cute and well appointed with a coffee maker, fridge, and microwave. They even have pool/beach towels that you can use. Staff was helpful and polite. We will return.

The staff was really excellent, and did a lot to make us feel at home. My only complaint is that the wifi was spotty, but to be fair, we didn't say anything and the staff had no opportunity to fix it. It's a perfect place to stay if you aren't planning to spend much time in the hotel, which we were not.

Recently renovated, friendly staff and near to the beach. Rooms are loud, far from La Jolla Village and fairly expensive.

I booked The Shoal twice for my 76 year old mom who was visiting. She loved this hotel for how kind, helpful, accommodating they were to her. Would definitely highly recommend.

This is a great location though it is really a motel type property not a hotel with a lot of amenities. But it is very close to the beach and towels, chairs, and umbrella are included.

The room was very clean and updated - location was fantastic- just a quick walk down to the beach. Coffee/bagel Shop next door and restaurants walkable. Walked to see the seals at LaJolla cove. Surprised at the reasonable price for that location. Staff was friendly and helpful. Coffee/tea/cocoa and water provided in the lobby. There was instant oatmeal available as well…. Wouldn’t call it breakfast Overall, a good stay for the price

Air conditioning worked well but was loud- otherwise a good stay if you want to be close to La Jolla village and beach.

Close to beach and local stores/restaurants. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. A few of our charging ports did not work, walls are pretty thin & could hear a lot through them (tv, showers).

I stay here for work and I’m always able to enjoy my evening resting and it’s close to good food.

GREAT beach for surfer or sunset watching is a 4 minute walk down the hill. Pool and hot tub were clean and nice. Oh and they give you towels that you can take to the beach

It was extremely uncomfortable, the pillows, the sheets, the mattress, the pillowcases. The air conditioner was completely erratic and made us sick. The walls were so thin we could hear everything in the next room, the TV, etc. Definitely not happy with our stay

The firepit was one amenity we were looking forward to using, just sitting outside at night and recapping our day, but it was broken during our stay.

Was slightly tired feeling hotel. Room smelled musty and construction happening across the road. It’s a short walk to the beach to see the beautiful sunsets in La Jolla. The location is slightly far from the restaurants in La Jolla.

Great location. Very safe area. Easy to navigate to. Staff was so ready to make us comfortable. The only thing I did not like was the window was looking at another wall of the building. Not a big thing, but everything else was so good

Overall great stay! Close proximity to the beach and a few local spots. My only complaint/suggestion is to have more lighting in the room(dark and hard to see) . Also the bathroom fans really don’t do much at all , so some room spray would be great 😅😂

There are more rooms than parking spaces at this hotel so just because you paid to stay here you may not be able to park here. It was suggested that I could park down the street or in an alley when I came back from dinner at 9:00 PM and there were no spaces.

Front desk staff was wonderful & very accommodating. Accessible room was great except the bathroom. No hooks for towels or bench for clothing.

The customer service was very good. Our room wasn't quiet the first night but they managed to move is to a better room with no issues. They even texted to follow up ensuring we were pleased. Desk staff were awesome. Room was bright and cheery. Great showers and good beds. Location was perfect.

Great modern room, comfy bed. Only downside was the fire pit wasn't working during our stay. The hot tub was small, but very relaxing. Great location & love that you can get towels, chairs & umbrellas to take to the beach.

Staff was delightful, eager to help with anything we might need. Rooms were recently renovated, spacious and very cute. Just a block or so off the beach.

A hidden gem. The value for a hotel in the area is unbeatable. The rooms were recently updated as is the rest of the hotel. A block from the beach, can’t be beat! We would definitely stay again if we come back to La Jolla.

I felt thoroughly welcomed with personal text messages before I arrived. The hotel is a short walk to a beautiful beach, coffee houses, a small grocery, and some great restaurants. Room was cozy.

The room was right next to a busy street, with cars passing all night, making it impossible to rest. The air was stuffy, the AC didn’t work, and the room was dirty — even the area by the stairs outside was full of dust and filth. There were mosquitoes inside, and I got bitten during the night. The bathroom was filthy, with mold and dirt in the corners of the shower and brown stains on the door. The ice bucket lid was rusted, and even the AC vent was covered in dust. When I reached out to the hotel, they refused to change my room, claiming no availability — yet there were rooms available the next day. They even suggested fixing the AC at 10–11 p.m., which is unreasonable. This property is misleadingly advertised and unsanitary. I would never stay here again, and I strongly suggest Expedia review this listing for false advertising and health concerns.

Well kept, recently remodeled. A little noisy but I slept well for the mist part. I spent a week there. I would go back.

We very much enjoyed our stay. Rooms are very nice, with new modern bathrooms. Staff were super helpful and friendly. Short walk to Windansea Beach, which is gorgeous. Pool and hot tub were fun. Parking no problem. If you want room service, just make sure to ask, as it is not automatic. We look forward to coming back again.

Noisy between the road and other guests--thin walls and floors. Inadequate parking--ended up having to find street parking if I came back after 9 pm. Staff were very kind and professional, and I appreciated being able to rent beach equipment/towels. Overall, it felt like a old converted apartment building, and not sure I'd stay there again.

Walk to Windansea Beach, however need to drive to get to PB, La Jolla Shores, ETC.. some stores nearby. Nice and easy to park there. The minifridge was so loud we unplugged it. Everynight asked the front desk to turn off the gas from the firepit, apparently it was leaking a bit, not a good sign. Lots of potential, but would not return.

The front desk was polite and helpful. I reserved a single for my brother-in-law. The room was around $290. His AC didn't work. He slept in stuffy room and I think if you pay that much, you should have a functioning AC in August. Felt cheated.

Such a gem! Staff was friendly and helpful. We loved that they had beach gear to borrow- we took advantage of that every day of our stay with the beach being walkable distance. The only thing that was negative was a horrible smell coming from the bathroom drains. They explained there was sometimes a backup issue due to the property being so close to the ocean- and did what they could to fix the issue but it was super bad. I’m not that squeamish and gagged multiple times. Though lessened after they cleaned the drains, the smell stayed the rest of our stay which was a big bummer!

For those of you on a budget or want a decent value, this is not the place. This is lipstick on a rat, right on a busy road …honestly resembles a made over Motel 6 , in fact might have been. Jam packed parking, rooms right in parking lot on the first floor. Gentleman, if you want to impress you partner keep looking, there are many places for the same price point that kicks this place’s ass…honesty even Motel 6…well okay… sames,

The staff was kind and receptive and they did a guest of the day random surprise and they picked us! It was such a nice treat to have the free parking and we didn't get to use the bicycle rental, but it was such a lovely gesture.

Great updated rooms with comfy beds and effective air conditioners. Small but useful parking lot. Pool area needs upgrades and extra cleanliness attention but there is a pool and jacuzzi on site. Beautiful neigborhood walk to the beach. Loved the bike rentals.

Stayed here 4 nights, and it was such a cute spot! So close to the beach, and neutral to all the spots like La Jolla cove, Pacific beach, mission beach! Would stay again!

The guy who ran the check in and front desk was one of the best customer service managers I’ve seen. The pool was nice and convenient, except when 2 teenagers jumped the fence to get in… then I had to be more aware of security. Manager handled very well.

The staff is excellent - can’t say enough nice things about them. But they need to fix up the rooms. Sone outlets don’t work. The clock/alarm is with the phone and doesn’t work either. The most annoying thing is that there is no real door to the bathroom. There is a sliding door so to speak which cannot close all the way and part of it slides off the rod from which it hangs and there is no way to lock it. I didn’t see an air conditioner or dehumidifier. No food options or listings for door dash. The place is fine but it needs an update

The Shoal did not disappoint. Immediately, upon entering the room, it smelled clean. It was nicely decorated and efficient. The bathroom was beautiful with nice tiles and a glass shower door. Everything on the grounds is clean and in good condition. We used the pool, hot tub and laundry facilities. Coffee and oatmeal were available for breakfast. There is a short walk to the beach. All the employees were wonderful.

Very quick walk to the beach, easy check-in, comfy beds. Parking gets rough at night, but parking across the street is still doable.

Overall a great place to stay, very reasonably priced for the location and available amenities.

The Shoal La Jolla Beach was a great place to stay to explore the area. It took about three minutes to walk to the beach. The room was quite spacious and recently renovated. The beds were comfortable and the shower had good water pressure. The staff was what made this place so special. They were so friendly and helpful.

The room was great, staff were amazing. Walls were not sound proof. I woke up at 4:30am due to the people above me walking around with shoes on. From what I could hear they had a sick child. The man next-door made a phone call and we could hear the entire conversation like he was in the room.

Comfortable enough for a night. Newly renovated but missing attention to detail in the finishing of the renovations- gaps in the tile for no reason for instance. Loud at night (it was a Monday night, I could hear conversations 2 rooms away). Parking is tight. Bed comfy.

The room was nicely remodeled with a very comfortable bed. The shower was great and heated up immediately. Staff were very friendly and checked-in every other day for housekeeping. Check-in and check-out was very smooth/quick. Great location by the beach and easy to walk to places.

Non-disclosed parking fee. Was not initially given the room I reserved. Had to go back to the front desk to get it straightened out. Desk staff was clearly miffed that I insisted on the room I reserved. Absolutely horrendously uncomfortable, hard bed. Even though the room was very clean, I expected much better overall experience. Cannot recommend.

Had a wonderful time staying at the Shoal. We would get our morning coffee and walk 5 minutes to the beach.. we also walked or took the bus all over the San Diego area from the hotel. This is a wonderful gem.

Good value despite distance from an event we attended… lots of good restaurants within walking distance. Property rooms have been well re-conditioned. Only drawbacks: need more hooks/olaces to hang drying towels rtc. And AC unot “gurgled.” Staff very friendly and helpful.

I was disappointed with the parking fees.

We were just here one night but we were quite impressed how they have updated this property . The rooms are modern and clean, and the pool area was a great place to relax. We really appreciated that the hotel provided beach chairs and we were able to walk down to the beach and enjoy the sunset.

Most Inns do not provide super clean rooms. This one was exceptionally clean and comfortable!! Will stay here again!

It was a home away from home. The staff was so friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. We were the guest of the day which started it off as a fun experience as soon as we received the text hours before check-in. The staff, location, and amenities made this an excellent vacation and we cannot wait to return!!
