Reviews
The hotel is praised for its spacious rooms and excellent location, with staff often described as friendly and helpful. However, many guests express dissatisfaction with the ongoing renovations, which cause noise and inconvenience. Additionally, several guests complain about hidden fees and the lack of certain amenities.

would not honor the price The water in the shower was luke warm, not hot. Very hard to get an elevator and when it did come half the elevator was taken by staff with large carts The mini bar items were very expensive, you did not get complimentary water or wi-fi Very disappointed Not worth the money

The air conditioner was right next to the bed, and the noise made it impossible to get any rest. I put up the "Do Not Disturb" sign upon arrival, yet the housekeeping staff knocked on the door and even opened it. The valet parking attendant complained to us for taking the luggage cart to unload our bags. It was absurd and disrespectful. I am referring to the older gentleman with glasses, a mustache, and gray hair. The Wi-Fi does not work well. I booked through Hotels.com for 865, but the hotel charged me 1152; I don't understand this, I am disappointed, and I want the 287 difference back. I regret to say this, but I would not stay here again.

1 of the 3 elevators trapped guests. The air conditioning units were subway level loud, I don’t know how people can sleep with that. We chose overheated sleeping over noisy sleeping. It was muggy and too warm in the room overnight as a result. Ugh

Location Sewer smell in the hotel room coming from the bathroom & wouldn’t go away. Fan ran all night nonstop even when adjusting thermostat. The bathroom outlet didn’t work for the hair dryer. The bathroom itself had a lot of grime in the corners & the sealant around the toilet wasn’t really there. Maybe that’s why there was a sewer smell or it’s in the vents. The smell made the stay incredibly unpleasant.

The hotel staff was spectacular, from the doorman Jonathan to the housekeeper Bebe! They had a balloon, signed card and gift waiting for me on my room to celebrate my 55 th! The only disappointment was there was no deep soaking tubs on any level but the penthouse. I needed a tub to soak my broken ankle in Epsom salts I brought with. The front desk tried to move me to appease me very sweetly, but after understanding my need offered the penthouse, but I couldn't afford it. Great location to catch M50, M101, M102, M103 buses and subway, any taxi! The M103 takes you door to door to Chinatown and little Italy!

It would have been nice if there was a clock in the room (other than the tiny one on the microwave way at the front of the room). Grab bars in the shower for older people to prevent slipping would have been a great addition.

You get a $20/day food/bar credit as an ammenity for your $45 resort fee for food and drinks that are about twice that amount overpriced. For a 4 star hotel, I was unimpressed. For this price range of hotels, there are many many better options in NYC.
- 5/5
Excellent credits on in-room mini bar purchases AND restaurant dining. Umbrellas loaned free on rainy days. Hotel Black Car available to airport at rates better than Uber or cab. Comfortable and cozy Lobby for lounging.

Amazing property!! Marilyn at the front desk provided an exceptional guest experience. And the gentlemen at the door were so friendly. Rooms were well appointed and freshly refurbished. Will be back!!
- 5/5
For an older hotel I found this place very enchanting with extra unexpected touches like a full refrigerator in the room. Conveniently located close to Rockefeller Center. The restaurant was OK, not great.
- 3/5
Daily mandatory fees were ridiculous, making us pay for things we did not need. They had an additional $15/day for the mini bar frig in the room (inside a regular frig)!! They also charged an extra $20/day to use in their restaurant! These are absolutely frivolous money making schemes that insult the guest staying. This cheapens up a nice old hotel, which is extremely sad! Management needs to change these cheap tactics or risk losing their customers!

We loved the room, the location, the friendly staff, and the doorman. He helped us with the luggage and greeted us whenever he saw us. The room was spacious enough for 2 of us, bigger than average. We wanted a spacious, comfortable stay when we visit for over a week, and this property fits everything. We booked this property mainly because of the kitchenette which we used, however, the coffee machine was quite dusty, and there was no way to clean it as the water tank was attached to the machine itself. One star off due to this reason.

This hotel was beautiful and very clean, both our room and the lobby was stylish and chic. The location was great, easy to walk to Broadway theaters. This was a perfect hotel for a weekend in NYC. I will say that we had drinks in the bar once, and I felt like they were very overpriced, but it is New York. I would definitely stay here again

We were upgraded to a suite and it was fabulous! We had no idea this kind of space was available for a family of 5 and we were pleasantly surprised. Well located to Rockefeller and easy to walk to all the attractions in Midtown.

We had an excellent stay at The Benjamin. Our room was great as it was on the 26th floor with a view of the Empire State Building. The staff in the dining room were especially nice and really wanted to please us. I would definitely stay there again when traveling to New York.

The property was great. I enjoyed everything about my stay- the facilities, the location, the space and the welcoming staff. The room was big, well designed and well maintained.
- 2/5
Kitchen in room should be updated,it was nice addition. The entire hotel needs updating, no air conditioner running in hallways or elevator, it was awful. No room service and front staff was slow and if you arrived half hour before check in 3pm you had to wait 1 hour before they could find a room, which was poor customer service and the pricey rates you pay is unacceptable for new york.

The front desk is not aware of any soaking tubs at all in the building. They tried to accomodate us and moved us to a room with a normal bath/shower combo. I would not have paid the extra upgraded room if i knew the tub didnt exist. I tried contacting Expedia with no reply. Writing this rebiew to warn other potential patrons.
- 5/5
Clean room and friendly staff!
- 4/5
I had a 300sq ft room, large for NYC. The hvac is comparable to the noise of a split system. Room had microwave and fridge. Zero noise heard between the walls. For hotel ownership/senior leadership- This 200 room hotel can’t run on 2 small, 100 year old elevators. 1 was broken during my entire stay. The elevators can barely accommodate a luggage rack. The elevators make it hard for your staff to serve guests! Poor design choice of using wallpaper above bathroom vanity- stains became apparent. I was in room 2005, the hole drilled into the marble countertop (for the sink faucet) was off by 1 inch, leaving an unsightly gap. Lastly, “Anatonicals” toiletries is a very poor choice for a “luxury” tier hotel brand. Anatomicals is similar to drug store quality.
- 5/5
Clean room, kind staff
- 4/5
Rooms and facility was cleaned and staff was friendly and responsive. The showers were in bathtubs with no safety grab bars. As someone who had a recent knee replacement, stepping over the tub and not having grab bars was very concerning. Also with one elevator not working, the elevators were slow and frustrating. For the prices paid per room, these are items that should be addressed.

This room and stay was exquisite! From the amazing staff, to emaculant sized rooms, and the best location to the great amenities and small unexpected additions; this is the ONLY place to stay. If your coming to New York, your stay here will not be disappointed.

Great location and spacious room. It was noisier than many other hotels we have stayed at in nyc due to close proximity to police and fire stations - sirens were going off all the time.

Staff was courteous and knowledgeable. Hotel room was clean and spacious for 3 people. Nice location in Midtown.
- 5/5
Fantastic hotel that embodies the classic New York feel! The staff were all so wonderful to us from the warm welcome to bringing their specialty pillows upon request. The hotel has beautiful furnishings, a restaurant on site and the small kitchenette in our room was an added bonus. Would definitely recommend staying here while visiting New York!
- 2/5
There are 2 elevators for the entire 25 floors of thebuilding plus a Service elevator. One elevator was broken for 4 days and still not fixed upon checkout. There was no communication, no apology, no help with luggage. Elevator wait time was over 20mintes and eventually had to walk luggage down 18 flights. No reduction of bill….nothing. Furniture in suites may be new, but barren and uncomfortable. TV operation is difficult and hard to manage. Looks like system is from 1980s and the bathrooms for the suites are tiny. Thank goodness the mid-town location and proximity to the subway was excellent or the stay would have been a bust.

We stayed at The Benjamin in suite 4201, a lovely room on the corner with a terrace both sides of the room. Excellent facilities in the mini bar and toiletries in the bathroom. We were looked after thoroughly from check in to heck out, Carlos in the bar was exceptional - so friendly and the Bell Boys (men) were incredibly kind, offering suggestions on restaurants and things to see and do. The location was excellent, 5 mins from Radio City and a subway to both up and downtown round the corner. We only had breakfast at the hotel, and it was delicious, as a brit, having tea in a mug was most welcome, rather than a tiny teacup. My husband used the gym and he said it was perfect, did the job. Excellent hotel.

- 5/5
The staff was wonderful! The people at the front desk and in housekeeping were all so kind and helpful with everything we needed. Our suite was clean and very spacious. The lobby was beautifully decorated for Christmas and felt so cozy and inviting. We will be back!
- 5/5
This was a special family trip to celebrate our 25 yr anniversary with our 2 adult sons. We loved the location of the Benjamin Sonesta bc it's just 3 blocks from the action: 5th avenue, Saks Light Show, St Patrick's, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music hall. Staying here was very convenient to see all the Christmas celebrations in midtown NYC. Beyond this our room setup was perfect. My husband and I had the King 1 bedroom so we could have breakfast in the living room with our kids and our adult kids shared the double Queen Room. The rooms are very spacious by NY standards, clean and recently renovated. We couldn't have had better accommodations. Also, we were granted an early check in to our room on our first day! The desk staff was very friendly and helpful. The only complaint we had was that our room was not made up on Thanksgiving day bc we left the room late, at 1pm. We did let the front desk know but perhaps the housekeeping team was short staffed bc of the holiday. This was not a big deal at all and in the scheme of things, a relatively minor issue.

Location, Staffs, Beddings, Kichenette. The bathroom sink was outdated and not in good shape. It needs some improvement in appearance and professional cleaning. Other than that, the hotel was an excellent choice.

From the moment we walked into The Benjamin Royal Sonesta, I knew we chose the right place. The staff were incredibly friendly, warm, and inviting — the kind of genuine hospitality that immediately puts you at ease, especially when you’re traveling alone with three kids. The atmosphere felt like stepping back into a refined 1920s New York, with a classy, old-New-York charm that made the whole stay feel special. The location could not have been more perfect. Our corner was calm, safe, and easy to navigate — not overly busy or chaotic. We were right beside the New York Luncheonette and Smith & Wollensky, which made meals effortless. And despite how peaceful the area was, it was still an easy walk to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Saks, and Central Park. Truly the best of both worlds. Our suite was incredibly spacious — a rare find in Manhattan. We had two large rooms, a kitchenette, two big screen TVs, beautiful windows that opened for fresh air, and everything was spotless. Housekeeping was amazing; when we ran out of toothpaste, they brought it up immediately with a smile. The hotel restaurant deserves its own praise. We were running late for the Harry Potter Broadway show, and they still managed to prepare fresh meals for all four of us in under eight minutes. That level of service is above and beyond. Every part of our stay felt cared for, easy, and safe. As a mom traveling solo with kids, that m

Nice room and amenities and location. Room cleaning was good, but a little infrequent. Might have to remind the desk to have them clean your room if you leave in the afternoon.
- 3/5
Be aware that they will NOT credit your stay on rewards points with Sonesta - and they charge for absolutely everything - internet - water - grossly petty charges for a “premium” hotel
- 5/5
Great location, friendly and efficient staff.
- 3/5
Staff was great but rooms were not as clean as expected.
- 2/5
The front desk people were professionally and helpful. The rooms are SO LOUD. You can hear the street traffic or the air conditioner/heater turns on with a boom every few hours.
- 5/5
Hotel was lovely but very expensive and lacked a bar/restaurant which is always nice to have in a hotel. We did not have time to use the spa or gym but that is a nice feature
- 5/5
Perfect location off Lexington—not too busy like the West side. Plenty of choices for food & good coffee! Good quiet room, comfy bed: that’s all I need.
- 2/5
One of the dirtiest room I have been in for some time. We reported the issues to front desk but it was still dirty with different types of hair throughout the room
- 2/5
I usually stay in a different area in NYC but I decided to switch it up this time. I am not happy that I did. We walked in and the front desk people were unkind. The room size is good but the bathroom was dirty. When I left my credit card was charged with a large amount with charges I had no idea about. I will not return to this hotel and I encourage everyone to find different accommodations when visiting NYC.
- 3/5
With a little more attention to service, maintenance, and cleanliness, this would be a really great property. However it can be difficult to get a response from some staff, the linens and pillows need refreshing, and the facilities are mildly backed up and consistently odiferous. We were a bit disappointed and ready to go!
- 5/5
A great stay. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Hotel is in a great location. Rooms were large for a city hotel and well appointed.

The staff was INCREDIBLE! Me and my girlfriend showed up earlier than the time slot and they gave us a free room upgrade just to get us checked in early and satisfied. The room was spacious and the service was amazing. Couldn’t recommend this stay enough! Thank you guys so much for your warm hospitality. :)

Nice clean rooms. Was upgraded to a balcony suite on arrival. Was really nice to have a sizable room to return to, as our original booking was for another hotel with a room that would have been over half the size for the same price.

Only negative is the elevators are way too slow.

I chose this hotel for location and use of a fridge/microwave. I have severe allergies and called ahead to note that. The lobby is overwhelmingly scented which is painful for an asthmatic. At check-in was the first I heard of an additional $100 hold per night’s stay. The kitchenette was full of their mini bar items. I went to front desk and asked that they remove the items on the counter - except X. Everything was removed including X. Ok - errors happen. Called and asked for X. Half of X arrived. Next morning - can you send X. Did not arrive - but another product did. Not used. At checkout - bill included minibar items even though we’d had them removed on checkin. They offset it against room credit - but that’s a poorly controlled process. No hot water in bathroom and reported it. Not fixed. Called after 11:30PM to ask questions about a complaint we didn’t make. Dishes in kitchenette not clean. And the person cleaning the room sprayed tea tree oil spray setting off allergies in spite of request for no scents. If you are asthmatic or have allergies - I would not stay here. Finally - on two occasions - staff nearly ran me over in the hall with their carts. If the hall is narrow and someone is heading to the elevator with a bag - wait there with your cart and let the guest go first. Not the “luxury” stay the price point would imply.

Another wonderful stay. We are eager to return when the renovation is complete. The bar and restaurant are not yet open, but there are plenty of options nearby. The staff was amazing and the bed very comfortable.

The Benjamin was conveniently located to sloan Kettering hospital, my family member is getting cheemo so this brings us to the Benjamin weekly.the lower floors are noisy and one bedroom suite bathroom is smaller but other than a rude doorman on August 11th@530pm which i was flabagasted because other doorman were nice and tried to accommodate you.perhaps he was having a bad day.
- 5/5
Great room , a lot of good places to eat nearby
- 5/5
Amazing staff. Doormen and front desk staff were friendly and lovely. Our room was HUGE by NYC standards -- much larger than my old Midtown apartment. Gym was a cut above most hotels. Great place.

- 5/5
This was a great location. It was close to public transportation and walking distance to many great locations. The room was large and inviting and the doormen were great with recommendations. It would be nice to have a lounge or restaurant on site, but there places in close proximity.
- 5/5
Cockroach crawling across the floor in the morning where my kids were sleeping. Gross! Caught it under a glass but those things are ridiculously fast. Front desk sent someone up who came and vacuumed it up.
- 5/5
Walkable to restaurants and stores. In the middle of the city.
- 5/5
Rooms are full renovated amd have a great location in midtown
- 5/5
Love the place. Love the renovation and the area.
- 5/5
We would easily make this our choice for future stays in NYC. It is within walking distance of the East River, MoMA, and many more cultural/historical sights. Plus, there is a great little restaurant two doors down that is PERFECT for breakfast.
- 4/5
Was upgraded to a suite with balcony for an extra $100 / night. Suite had some facility issues like furniture on balcony was minimal and not representative of the photos. Blinds on 2 windows not functional and missing drawer and cabinet front.
- 5/5
All was well.
- 5/5
Location, clean, spaciousness, great staff
- 3/5
Suite was large and comfortable, amenities OK. This is not a high end hotel; very much mid range. Room was tired and dusting on surfaces was poorly done, as was cleaning of the bathroom. Felt a bit grotty. Electric blinds in the room were half broken. Generally the staff were nice and helpful. Saving grace was the competitive price for the room although we did book last minute. Less than 50/50 whether we would stay again as the hotel desperately needs some refurbishment and cleaning standards must be improved. At least the bar was in the process of being refurbished... This meant it was closed, but there's a very good alternative 2 doors down.
- 4/5
Need an exhaust fan in the bathroom. Down conductor is too hot and using air condition is too noisy for good sleep
- 5/5
Best place to stay everything is around this place. All staff are very helpful I love it thank you
- 5/5
Great front desk service, phenomenal doormen, great location.
- 4/5
Room was clean & pretty spacious. Our balcony didn’t have a chair & that’s all I’d recommend. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was the shower because there wasn’t a door or shower curtains, so the water was splashing
- 4/5
Great hotel for girls trips! We got a room with a living room and kitchen and an adjoining room! Perfect!
- 5/5
Front desk/staff was professional and available to assist with any questions on New York restaurants, transportation, etc.

Rooms were exceptionally large for NYC and the hotel itself is very nice!

If you have a kid in diapers, dont stay here. No trashcans anywhere in the hotel except your room. They expect you to keep dirty diapers in room because if you keep it outside your door to take to garbage outside the hotel, staff and maybe a guest complains. The hotel staff send nasty texts about kicking you out if it happened again. They dont offer any advice or let you know of an area to throw them away.

The room was clean and comfortable and the staff was incredible. I would absolutely return.

The staff was very accommodating. We had early dinner reservations and had gotten soaked from the heavy rain, they upgraded us to a bigger room which was ready, so we could get into a room and change for dinner.

Clean hotel, good location.

Everything was perfect. Amazing hotel and great location.

The renovation was done well and the rooms are expansive and comfy. Kitchenette could have more dishes, plus soap and paper towels. Staff are welcoming and professional.

Fantastic in the heart of manhattan! The location was close to Central Park and walking distance to just about everything. It was also on the main bus route and close to Subway station. The room was absolutely immaculate, small but well appointed, in excellent condition. Only only two negatives, 1)the climate control for the room is extremely noisy when AC is running. 2) There was a divot in the bed where people slept. (Time for a new mattress cover). Front desk staff really helpful! I would stay there every chance I get.

Having a living area with a sofa bed separate from the bedroom was exactly what we required and it worked perfectly for our family. The staff were great and dealt with everything quickly. Check in and out was very quick. Location provided us with easy access to everywhere in Manhattan, especially with Grand Central being so close. Next time we visit New York, we will immediately check if rooms are available at this hotel.

I checked in at a out 2:30 pm, and my reserved room was not yet ready. I was placed in a suite that was already cleaned which was a tremendous upgrade from the basic room which I had reserved. The room was lovely and comfortable.

The only bad part of the trip was that one of the two elevators (which are small) was out of service in the morning at a busy time. I was on the 15th floor and lucky to get the last spot in the elevator going down to the lobby. We stopped at about 7 other floors, and others had to bow out due to a lack of room.

Bathroom too small. No heat in bathroom, difficult to control heat. No free water. TV remote not working to purchase movies or select movies

Close to everything! We walked most places. Clean. Friendly staff. Room was nice. No restaurant, food available. Apparently was closed. Snack bar in room with option to purchase. Overall, nice stay.

It was low season so the price was relatively ok

the air conditioning unit was ancient and so loud that we couldn't sleep at all. It just clanked all night!

I like the modern design and the bare floors.
