The property was very unique and well laid out. Nice amenities and charm. Would’ve been nice to have your own bathroom in the room, but wound up not being an issue

What an amazing, unforgettable hotel. I stayed 4 nights and loved every moment, from the boho Silversun Pickups room to the basement bar and gorgeous restaurant and soaking pool. The Crystal ballroom was only one block away. I can't wait to go back! I had to come home.

Also we didn’t receive a free breakfast. Didn’t know that was available. Otherwise beautiful and clean with a wonderful soaking pool.
- 2/5
Staff was rude. We completely felt like a burden. Pillows were so used we had to stack 3 on each other to get any kind of support. Menu in our room wasn't available until 10 days after our stay. Bartender at Hals acted as if us ordering was a chore. We used to love staying here. Unfortunately it seems as if staff has forgotten that the customers are what make their job possible. Bartenders at Als den were great, and the ONLY highlight of our trip. They should be training the rest of the staff.
- 5/5
Always a please staying here. Easy online check in. Clean rooms and we love the themes of the rooms. Shared bathrooms are clean and easy to use. The hot pool is amazing. Food is great and walking distance to so many other options too.

Place was very clean and well appointed, but simple. Location is good, near bars, restaurants, and shops.... Also the Crystal Ballroom! Even so, our room was quiet. Soaking pool was lovely and very clean! Great urban getaway
- 5/5
Second time staying here. Amenable staff, great rooms, clean bathrooms, incredible salt-water hot tub (that's very large), and just an all-around awesome hotel. Highly recommend.
- 2.5/5
The service seemed reluctant to help, and the shared bathrooms were a hassle, both of which seemed unreasonable at the price we paid for our stay.
- 4/5
fun.. but room very dark!

- 5/5
Clean room and bathrooms, everyone was super nice
- 5/5
the room was nice and clean. parking is a little hard
- 5/5
I did not have breakfast.
- 5/5
Breakfast not included, restaurant attached was slightly overpriced for the quality, not the quantity of food. Rooms and shared bath super clean.
- 5/5
Staff is always great and it's always bittersweet when I have to leave.
- 5/5
Super fun, funky, unique hotel experience! The “soaking pool” was actually a hot tub (no jets) which was a fun surprise! The bed was very comfy and the staff was incredibly friendly. I had so much fun staying here with my friend. My ONLY complaint was that the walls are thin and windows don’t do much to block outdoor sound, all due to it being a historic building (honestly what else can you expect for the price?!). Parking is $26 overnight at the garage down the street, which is a steal compared to other cities. Free coffee in the morning is GOOD and I’m picky!!
- 2/5
Very Bohemian in nature. Staff was good. Room was cluttered, dusty, and felt musty.
- 5/5
Great Staff!
- 5/5
Unique and charming historic hotel in downtown Portland
- 5/5
Classic styling to the hotel and rooms. Cool layout in bar area and can’t be in a better spot for things to do!
- 2/5
Really sus lack of clarity in their advertising about the lack of bathrooms. This is more of a hostel. They need to be much more upfront in their online profiles
- 5/5
Nice size room, clean, fun de or and so close to powells
- 5/5
The pool was amazingly beautiful.
- 5/5
The property was very interesting as historical so was a little different. Great staff & location. Just be aware that no TV in room or bathroom-just a sink. There were several bathrooms on the floor so no problem & always clean. We would stay there again.
- 3/5
I liked it but they should make it more clear that you do need t get your own bathroom. Likewise, this may have been bad timing but the bathroom across the hall from us had blood in the shower and was dirty. In all fairness we were too busy to let anyone know.
- 4/5
We LOVED our quick check in … We were an hour early and thought they would not let us check in, But they checked us in no problem. They acknowledged our dog and were kind and professional. The hotel is located Downtown Portland and the city started at 6:30am on a Saturday with a drill hammer to hammer the sidewalk right in front of our room. Not the best way to wake up. We loved the salt water pool. WE WILL VISIT AGAIN … the shared bathroom was Always clean A+
- 5/5
Cool property. We landed at midnight, walked to scooter McQuade’s, had drinks and apps at 1:30 am, and a great experience at the bar. Bathrooms are good, we slept good, parked by the door, swam in the morning. Nice and easy.
- 5/5
Great place to stay if you want to explore Pearl district on foot. Love this property. Soaking tub a huge plus!
- 5/5
Unique character and reasonable cost
- 5/5
Unique music-focused rooms. Safe and easily accessible. Close to plenty of restaurants and bars. Would recommend.
- 5/5
This is not your typical hotel. If you're looking for a Hilton type stay go stay at a Hilton-tyoe place. This is more artsy and almost private room at a hotel feel, in a good, unique way
- 4/5
If you like art, stay here.
- 4/5
The peoperty was good. We booked 2 beds. Our room was 1 bed. No recourse since we didn’t book through them.
- 3/5
the facility is old, rooms are a little bit dark , no table, bed are uncomfortable, 3 restroom in each floor with 10 rooms sharing it, not that bad considered, wash sink really a room only with bed and sink nothing more, no closet or table. there's a lot of safe parking nearby. overall im not going back here again unless it is very cheap price. Also elevator is scary its cracking whenever you use it lol
- 5/5
There were 4 shared bathrooms on the floor which I found to be convenient. I loved the use of a robe and plenty of towels to use when going down the hall. It's an older hotel so I could hear the big party of people next to me the first night but the staff quickly came to disperse and quiet them down politely. I appreciated that immensely.
- 5/5
We’ve always loved staying at McMenamins any chance we get !! The crystal ballroom is a great one if you want to stay downtown Portland It’s in the heart of everything… We especially love there soaking pool! After a day of traveling the soaking pool and a pitcher of Ruby beer is a must for us !
- 5/5
Romantic for sure! Great place for a getaway
- 5/5
Always a great stay, food options great, staff polite and friendly, soaking pool amazing, and overall a great view of Portland!
- 5/5
Fun hotel with lots to look at. Conveniently located restaurant and bar on 1st floor. Nice bars in walking distance. Walking distance to China Town and water front. Portland appears cleaner than years before.
- 5/5
Awesome place!
- 5/5
Such a quirky spot. I’ve always wanted to stay here, finally did and was not disappointed! Everything you need under one roof. The shared bathroom isn’t bad. Not ideal but for a night or two it’s easy! I never ran into anyone.
- 5/5
Such a fun and unique stay! Perfect spot to walk around the pearl district
- 5/5
Staff was friendly, the check in process was easy and the amenities were top-notch. Location was in a very walkable area near many attractions, I would definitely stay here again!
- 5/5
Place is awesome!
- 5/5
The night shift girl was very friendly and helpful. The long hot tub was warm and clean. Our room was decorated very cute. It was nice to have a sink in the room. The shared bathrooms were close and clean. We had a great time!
- 5/5
There is parking near by, but read the reviews for parking. Overall a great experience..
- 5/5
Very unique property right in the heart of Portland. Easy to walk neighborhood with lots of great dining options
- 4/5
I’m not happy
- 4/5
It was a good stay! Fascinated by the hotel's history, and appreciated the staff's willing to be of assistance. Was not exactly expecting for the bathroom to be shared, I may have glossed over that fact. Wished there was some kind of mini fridge in the room for any leftover foods to avoid any chance of food going bad otherwise anything I had to eat will be just tossed out. Noise in environment around rooms were ok, you could hear footsteps from other visitors, but it isn't as bad as you think! Would stay here again although, and try out more things to do in the area!
- 5/5
Hot water soaking pool was amazing.
- 2/5
The pool is fabulous. The shared bathrooms is also no issue. The room we had "wrecking ball" smelled awful. Even with window open did not help. Sheets short and old. No space to put down anything. Hotel had crazy chrges added on and did not honor our Expedia rate.
- 5/5
I so appreciated all the staff. Everyone was more than happy to help and accommodate us. Great people and great food!
- 4/5
Pros: Clean, friendly staff, soaking tub, convenient food, location is perfect if you're attending a Crystal Ballroom event or want to walk around and shop, in room air/temp controls. Cons: Rooms are quite dark and small (stayed in a Queen). I'm thankful I read that in review and brought my own light! Shared bathrooms may not be everyone's cup of tea. Parking was less than ideal - it's only a couple of city blocks away, but it's inconvenient not to be able to access your car easily if you forget something. Also, walking around downtown with heavy luggage trying to find the hotel in the pouring rain is not a fun experience. I think they have parking out front you can drop your stuff at before going to park, but they were blocked or full when I arrived.
- 5/5
Always a favorite spot to see concerts and stay. Its downtown Portland, but it’s really honestly the best option if you’re walking and don't need to go far. Our first choice when seeing concerts at Crystal Ballroom. Also food in the restaurant is amazing.
- 5/5
This historic building has fantastic vibes and was within easy walking distance to our music venue and Powell’s - definitely will consider this place again when needing to stay in Portland. (Rooms are small, but that’s a perk imo!)
- 5/5
Staff are amazing.
- 5/5
Location is great, soaking pool is very relaxing and the staff is always pleasant. Free coffee is excellent. I always have a great time here.
- 5/5
Very cute and quirky building with lots of character. Tons of restaurants and breweries within walking distance which is a big plus!
- 5/5
unique and historical hotel, we loved our stay!!
- 4/5
The soaking pool is main attraction for me. The 1am closing time is great. I always try and stay here for the soak and the nice staff. Thank you
- 4/5
Unique property in typical Mcmenamins style(that's good thing); will stay again.
- 5/5
Beautiful stay, great speakeasy in the basement and beautiful wading pool.
- 5/5
Very nice soaking pool and breakfast was great parking was safe
- 4/5
Such a unique hotel. Very fun and clean. For downtown Portland we felt very safe. Staff were great, food was yummy.
- 5/5
Great stay and friendly staff!
- 5/5
Such a great place in an amazing part of Portland. Even cleaner than a year ago. So much to do, see and eat. All within walking distance. And you can't beat Hal's cafe right down the stairs!
- 5/5
Seamless check in, room and shared restroom was clean and tidy, comfortable. Parking is a bit of a challenge and being located downtown, there are some characters out and about outside the hotel. The room is small and it was a bit distracting to hear passion being shared in the room next door, for a better part of the night. Happy for them, love is grand, but it did impact my sleep somewhat.
- 4/5
The soaking pool is where it is at. The adult hours is Greatly appreciated.
- 5/5
It was a great experience.
- 5/5
Hotel is very cozy, has a lot of character, great staff and the soaking tub is always amazing.
- 5/5
The decor of the hotel and the rooms were unique and beautiful.
- 5/5
It was a very nice and quiet stay the room was comfortable and clean and the restaurant was very nice
- 4/5
So this was a great stay, however I got food poisoning so I spent the whole night running up and down the halls to the communal bathrooms. They were hard to find, the hallways are dark and confusing, the labeling is a little tricky, this isn’t the hotels fault, but I ended up having to bring a pillow and blanket to the bathroom and camp out there. Great otherwise
- 5/5
Good food downstairs and close to everything in the Pearl District.
- 5/5
We loved our stay. It’s a fun, quirky spot with warm moody lighting and a lot of unique character. Our room had a shared bathroom, but we never had to wait for bathroom access. Loves the location just around the corner from Powell’s books and Deschutes Brewing
- 3/5
This is an adorable property. Rooms are TINY but very cute and clean. Shared bathrooms, but bathroom was very very clean. There is no parking however, though when we booked with expedia it did say parking with surcharge. There is no parking, you have to find a structure and hope you didn’t forget anything in your car or else you’ll have to trek back for it. Area is cute but not that safe
- 5/5
This is a lovely little vintage flatiron with proper McMenamins quirkiness: decor, soaking pool, souvenirs, and staff. I would stay here again. The parking is a block away on foot: could be an issue for some folks. Overall, however, we had a lovely stay.
- 5/5
Wish there were fans in the shared bathrooms, the pool could be a little warmer. Cute property with lots of character.
- 3/5
Beautiful art work and fun old building but no ice, no TV or Bluetooth speaker no refrigerator super small room. Overall good for the price.
- 5/5
Available even on busy weekends
- 5/5
This is a fun, funky spot and the team are fantastic! I felt welcomed, safe and comfortable. I don’t care that I crossed the hall to the bathroom- I never saw a soul and it was clean and nicely appointed. The details were so thoughtfully covered and the restaurant bar and coffee were excellent. I was on a difficult trip and this stay made it so much easier- I felt at home ( with better catering and art!)
- 4/5
Eclectic
- 5/5
The hotel has great character, comfortable bed. and the staff is very friendly
- 5/5
Love this place.
- 4/5
Besides that one hiccup everything else is awesome. The room had a great decor as did the rest of the property. It didn't feel generically well decorated, but like real personality went in to it, which is a nice change. Everything was clean, and there was very little noise carryover you might expect from an older building like this. The restaurant was good, and the location is pretty choice. Who doesn't appreciate a five minute walk to Powells world of books? I grew up in Portland and I have felt a hole in my heart every time I visit the city the past few years but for my stay I felt I got a little bit of that late 90's early 2000'1 Portland back in a quirky fun atmosphere in the middle of a Northwest blanket. It was nice.
- 5/5
Always love our stays at McMenamins properties!!
- 5/5
So clean and a unique cool room, helpful staff and within walking distance of great restaurants and stores
- 5/5
I really enjoyed the interior theme of the hotel. Good size on the rooms with no frills but does quite well with the basics. I was hesitant at first with the shared bathroom/shower but realized it never was an issue having to wait for someone or the cleanliness. The hot pool was the jewel of the place for me and was what sold me to McMenamins. The pool was very relaxing and well kept. I didn't experience the cafe or diner, but I did see it had a good vibe/atmosphere. The location to lots of restaurants/bars and local touristy stuff was perfect. I'll definitely be back. The staff was lovely as well.
- 3/5
I liked the soaking pool . There was no place to hang out on property other than bars or restaurants.
- 5/5
Went to a concert at Crystal Ballroom, stayed at Crystal Hotel. No brainer. Good in every sense of the word.
- 5/5
Great little hotel with charm to spare, we had a great night and would definitely stay again. Fun surprise to learn there’s a heated soaking pool in the basement open till 1am! Great vibe.
- 5/5
Loved staying at the McMenamins Crystal Hotel! Saw Marcus King at the Crystal Ballroom which was also fantastic.
- 5/5
A perfectly quirky hotel in a great location!
- 5/5
The saltwater pool was awesome!
- 4/5
The art in the rooms
- 5/5
Great hotel, very unique. Surrounding areas didn’t feel safe.
- 5/5
Stayed for one night in a queen room. Shared bathroom situation wasnt an issue at all. There are several on each floor that you have access to. The basement hot tub was amazing. All staff was friendly and courteous. I was able to park nearby at Brewery Blocks Garage. Great option if you are in town for a concert or nightlife. Will stay there again the next time im in Portland.

- 5/5
A wonderful place to stay for a downtown Portland getaway! The soaking pool was a great way to cap off each day, and the room was cozy and comfortable for us. Would absolutely recommend you stay here if you're looking for a great spot in the Pearl district!
- 5/5
Unique historic eclectic boutique hotel. Go for the experience.
- 5/5
Love the Crystal Hotel The whimsy, the artsy, the cool old architecture, the soaking pool, the customer service. We had a great time seeing Lukas Nelson at the Crystal Ballroom and it was a treat being steps away from a comfortable bed. But this part of downtown Portland wears us out. Too sad. Going to Edgefield next time.
- 5/5
Staff was very friendly. Amenities were perfect. The soaking tub is awesome! The room was fun and unique. Good location as well
- 5/5
The vibes: immaculate. The cutest historic building. The staff: SO wonderful. There was a tiny little hiccup with our check out time but they were so gracious and sweet. The room: so cozy and cute. We loved wearing the robes provided while getting ready for our night. Location: PERFECT everything we walked or needed was a 2 minute walk at most. Cleanliness: SPOTLESS. If it wasn’t perfectly clean I would have walked right outta there. I hate even a mildly dirty hotel. I was NERVOUS because the bathrooms are not located in the room but honestly didn’t even matter. My only teeny tiny complaint is that the lighting is not ideal for doing your make up, especially in the fall when it gets dark outside earlier, but that obviously is no fault to the hotel. I had the best girls weekend here. I cannot wait to bring my honey back ❤️❤️

Customer service
- 5/5
It was awesome! Would stay there again!
- 5/5
I had fun at the Crystal; friendly and helpful staff, great bar and restaurant, very affordable, lots of good tips and orientation for this first time Portland visitor. I am anxious to return and have more fun, adventure, good food and exploration.
- 3/5
I liked the hotel. For the price though it wasn’t worth it. Motel quality for hotel pricing. The history of the place is cool but our room smelled really musky and it honestly weirded me out a bit.
- 5/5
Awesome hotel, the location was perfect for me since I was going to a show at the Crystal Ballroom not too far away. This hotel is also in very close proximity to restaurants, parks and attractions that are from a walkable distance. The room we stayed in was very clean and had a sink in the room which was convenient since the bathrooms in this hotel are shared (privately accessed with a key of course). We also ate at the adjacent restaurant and received very pleasant service. There was a bit of noise from other guests here and there that can definitely be heard through the walls, but overall it was actually pretty quiet and I didn't have too many issues sleeping overnight. My stay was brief but if I visit the Portland area again I would totally stay here, especially for the ultra reasonable pricing.
- 5/5
A gem. Nuff said.
- 5/5
While I like the overall attitude of this hotel, the rooms are much too small and poorly lighted.
- 4/5
great stay
- 5/5
Really cool and unique hotel great staff awesome pool delicious food and drinks
- 5/5
The McMenamins Hotel is rooted in music history, and I am so glad I did so. I chose this hotel because of its association with the Cyrstal Ballroom, where I attended a show. The staff was courteous from beginning to end, the bathrooms(although communal) served my needs, and I had no issues. The downstairs hot springs are amazing, and I'm saddened that I did not spend more time there. On the bright side, if I ever needed a quick getaway, I'd take the time to drive to Portland from Seattle. Parking can be a hassle, so expect to pay $25 per day at a nearby parking lot. Shout out to Kay and Chloe for the service. Oh, and forget to attend the adjacent cafe. :)
- 5/5
I loved all the artwork, the bohemian vibe of the entire space. The staff was amazing and I would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Liked the salt water soaking bathes.
- 1/5
We had to stay at a different hotel down the street. Homeless people were roaming all around that one too and it was only a couple blocks away. I recommend taking all of your valuables out of your car and if you explore the city after dark do not do it alone. Stay in groups.
- 5/5
Everything!!!!!!! A fairybook joy !!!!
- 5/5
This was a great experience in this noted hotel and we enjoyed being in the city. We loved the soaking tub. The hotel was clean. The staff was amazing in helpfulness and they were bright, happy people!
- 5/5
Didn't have to wait for shared bathroom at all. Wonderful artwork throughout. Enjoyed saltpool.
- 5/5
Was able to check in early for my 3rd floor queen room. Toilet was directly across the hall, which I liked. Blackout curtains worked really well. I had the soaking pool completely to myself Sunday night, which was amazing. Didn't have a chance to eat/drink at Zeus or Al's. Would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Very fun and unique hotel
- 5/5
A unique place to stay that more than met our expectations.
- 5/5
Clean beautiful great food great service 4 th time here never disappoints
- 5/5
Thanks.glad we had the chance to stay in such a unique and beautiful place.
- 5/5
Storytelling on the walls of each room was neat. Creaky elevator made each ride fun. Great place. Would go back there again!!
- 3/5
I emailed them about leaving ID in the room and my car window getting smashed. No response.
- 5/5
Yay!
- 3/5
The room I stayed in was extremely cold the thermostat did not work. I could have asked to be moved but at 1 in the morning I was just too tired. I did love the swimming pool though and it being open until 1am was a nice plus!
- 5/5
We stayed at the Crystal Hotel for an anniversary—my spouse lives for hot springs and soaking pools, so when I saw pics of the Crystal’s subterranean soaking pool I had to book it. Staff was super helpful, room was comfortable and clean, restaurant and bar are great. The underground soaking pool is the highlight—beautiful and mystical. I was skeptical about the shared bathrooms because I hate, hate, hate public bathrooms. But honestly, I was so pleasantly surprised that every time I used the bathroom it seemed like it had just been scrubbed sparkling clean. Kudos! Location is great with walking access to Powell’s, Portland Center Stage, the Galleria and lots of shops and restaurant. On-street parking was easy to find and our car was fine.
- 4/5
Needs bigger lobby for checking in, parking in Portland is horrible, shared bathrooms are weird. + side beds and room are ok, pool is open late. Nice employees, close to venue, good beers and hotel price is affordable
- 2/5
I reserved the room on Expedia a month prior but when I arrived at hotel they didn’t have my reservation and were full. After lots of back and forth they found a room because someone just cancelled a few hours prior, otherwise we would have been out since it was st Patrick’s day and everything was full. They said someone on there end didn’t confirm reservation and they sold room.
- 5/5
So quirky and unique, a must stay!
- 5/5
It was also close to the Crystal Ballroom venue, which was why we picked it. Thanks so much!
- 4/5
This hotel was quirky and unique. Super cute. On the other hand the room was very small but still charming. Would’ve liked it even more if it had a private bathroom in our room. Overall though a great place to stay.
- 4/5
It is an interesting older building that is very conveniently located. Rooms are quite small and do not have TVs
- 5/5
rooms werre nice. Soaking tub was great! Food was great!
- 5/5
Great location, super helpful staff, cute rooms - great place to stay!
- 5/5
I adore being in the center of downtown. Close walking distance to bars, venues and restaurants.
- 4/5
We enjoyed our brief stay. The property had great character and was close to the train station. The front desk clerk was so helpful and informative.
- 4/5
Great location. Helpful staff
- 5/5
This location was great, within walking distance to all of the things we had planned. The room was cute and very comfortable. Everyone on staff at the hotel and all of the connected restaurants and bars was super friendly and seemed to genuinely enjoy their work.
- 2/5
The place a dirty and gross. In our room the mattress had read wine stains on the covering and the bed spring also had red wine spilled on it. Our blanket didn’t fit the bed properly and had a cigarette while in it. The floors look, feel, and smell like they are caked in years of throw up and spills. Everything needs an update here. I went to the soaking tub in the basement and the air vents had year of dust coating the metal grate. It was so incredibly disgusting. The entire time I just felt dirty. I spent a lot of my room and had to share a toilet. I would just avoid this place. Not worth the money. There are places very close by that cost less and have a toilet in the room. Other hotels near by appear cleaner. Just avoid.
