Reviews
Guests generally enjoy their stay at the hotel, praising the friendly staff, clean rooms, and convenient location. However, some guests express dissatisfaction with the parking options and additional fees, as well as occasional issues with room comfort and cleanliness.
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Clean and comfortable rooms
- Limited and expensive parking options
- Additional fees for amenities like WiFi and parking

Very clean and friendly boutique hotel. I would stay there again. The beds are comfortable and the staff is very helpful . Location is good too.

Everyone was great and the place was spotless. The food was a little on the meh side, but when surrounded with such great eating options, you're not lacking for opportunities.

Beautiful room and amenities!

Clean room, amazing view from our floor of the city, and overall great stay for our family. Recommend for overnight or short stays.

This is the second time that I stay at this hotel. I like a lot the location because is a 15 min walk to the harbor area or to restaurants in the Gas Lamp area. The hotel is modern and I like the ambience at the lounges. The room and the bathroom are big and modern and the cleaning service is excellent. It's an easy and fast drive to the highways to visit other areas of the city or places near San Diego. We had breakfast two days at the main Lobby and the food was really good and our servers were quite nice. Terrace area is quite nice as well; but because of weather we could not use it this time, but is quite nice for a glass of wine and appetizers with music and friends. Parking fee is expensive, but considering that parking is quite expensive in California is an issue that didn't bother us, we just looked for a public parking with a better fee near by. Amenity fee is as well an extra, but you get 50% of that fee on complementary food & beverage each day. It's quite good to be able to use it!!!

Clean property with good size rooms. Breakfast was good but overpriced and so is valet.
- 5/5
The property is beautifully. Centrally located. Staff incredible and service was outstanding! Thanks for making my stay wonderful!
- 5/5
The staff was very helpful with my late arrival and late check out. Breakfast was very good.
- 5/5
Great property with respectable staff and clean room.

Close to train station. Beautiful lobby. Nice room with comfortable window seat. Pretty city view. Having to use a key card to get up to your room caused problems in the elevator when several people were going up at once. We were all having trouble accessing our floor. Also, the coffee maker didn’t work and getting coffee with ONE muffin cost 38. Dollars. Pug-leeze.

The hallways feel outdated, the carpets are old and have an unpleasant smell, the walls and fixtures need repainting, and overall the property lacks the polished feel you would expect from a boutique hotel in this price range. Even the rooftop restaurant setup is inconvenient, with the restroom located down a long flight of stairs and on the opposite side of the building. While the rooms were clean and a decent size, the carpeting made them feel cheap rather than upscale. Most disappointing was the hospitality itself, much of the staff seemed uninterested or disengaged, which really impacts the guest experience. Overall, this hotel feels overpriced for what it offers, and unfortunately it’s not a boutique hotel I would recommend at these rates. Do not go based off the lobby picture, that's the only decent attraction of this hotel.
- 1/5
Cherry on top was that the sink in one of the rooms was backed up and there was a continuous stench throughout the property!
- 5/5
Love the location of this place! The room was super clean, the staff was friendly and they had a great breakfast options. My only feedback would be the parking was tough. Besides that it was a great experience and overall would stay there again. They had a really nice gym and area to sit and work if needed. Next time we’ll definitely plan for better parking as it gets pricey unless you want to pay the $75 a day for the valet.
- 5/5
The location of the hotel was really good, especially since we didn’t rent a car. We were able to walk to the waterfront and to little Italy. The hotel smelled amazing and was super clean. The staff was helpful and got us whatever we needed. The beds and pillows were very comfortable also. If I get back to San Diego I will definitely stay again!

We loved our cozy room! Very clean and comfortable beds! Very close to Little Italy and the Seashore . Friendly and helpful staff! Close to thd train station !

Rooms were clean, updated and modern. Walking distance to a variety of dining options. Disappointed with service. Long lines at check in, no staff to answer calls, lack of service when dining in the lobby area.

Overall this was a great stay with the exceppthat the room had a funky odor. This could have been due to the large rubber yoga mat hanging in the room?
- 5/5
Great bar
- 5/5
We parked valet and it was easy and convenient to get our vehicle when needed. Rooms were clean. Front desk staff was super friendly. Downside for me there was no place in the hotel where I could get replacement toiletries like other hotels might have, had to walk down to convenience store at night for pain medication, however, this was not too inconvenient and I enjoyed the cool night walk. Kids loved to look out the window and see the ocean. Within walking distance to many places to eat, including Little Italy. Also walking distance to the ships and pier. Overall, great place to stay. Would stay again.
- 4/5
My wife and I stay here because our daughter lives a block away. Over the years it's become more popular and has a fun vibe. The only issue I have with the location is the costs continue to rise - $75 daily parking, $40 resort fee. Add in state and city taxes and it's becoming to much.
- 5/5
We had a quick stay, before departing on a cruise the following morning. Check in was quick and easy, with friendly and efficient desk staff. The room was very comfortable and well appointed with a boutique vibe. Generous and satisfying breakfast in the lobby restaurant. Just blocks from cruise ship terminal.
- 5/5
walking distance to everything
- 4/5
The hotel overall is a good stay. The rooms are clean, but I would argue that the extractor sound in the bathroom is pretty noisy. The rest is a normal hotel with good standards.
- 3/5
I opted out of daily cleaning service but was told that I could ask for cleaning services whenever I needed during my 1 week stay. On the 3rd day I called front desk to get my room cleaned and no one came over. The next day I chose to go to talk personally to the front desk and asked again, and they said that it would be done during the day, but no one came over. In the 5th day i called again letting them know that it was the 3rd day that I’ve been communicating that i needed my room cleaned. They sent someone until the 6th day. I think this affected my overall experience with the hotel. The shower had issues, it vibrated like it was going to break when I twisted the handle to get hot water. The toilet had issues to flush, it got stuck every time and kept flushing until I opened the tank and pulled the lever that got stuck.
- 4/5
The hotel is centrally located with valet parking. Parking is $75 a night unlimited in and out service. The room and restaurants has great views and comfortable, there was a DJ at Topside later at night😁 The only complaint I had was the Ice machines were only on even floors but the elevator card only allowed you in your floor??? I was on an odd floor so I could never get ice

Nothing short of a perfect experience. From the valet, to the door man, to the front desk to the cleanliness and great design of the room. The building is in great condition. I will definitely be back.
- 5/5
Room was beautiful
- 4/5
Friendly staff, clean room.
- 3/5
The hotel is nicely appointed, clean and with nice amenities in the rooms. The staff was also polite and helpful. My reason for giving the three stars is due to the fact that, on arrival, we were told the hotel had overbooked and so we were moved to another hotel nearby for one night. It was not a huge problem, but was inconvenient because I was there for a conference that started early in the morning and went throughout the following day - making it hard to move hotels in the middle of the day. They did provide food and beverage vouchers and generally tried to offer extra perks because of the situation, but I would not stay there again knowing they overbook and move guests to lower quality hotels if needed.
- 5/5
The entire experience here was nice. Rooms are clean, location is perfectly situated between the harbor and Gaslamp district. The food at the restaurant was delicious and service was reliable.

Christian in valet section was awesome! Elaborated on things to do in the area and just overall very helpful. Restaurant inside the lobby was good too. Hummus, salad, vegan bowl all top-notch! Thanks and we’ll be back!
- 5/5
The location is convenient and the hotel ambiance is great. Food and drinks in the hotel restaurant is also really good.
- 2/5
The stay started great, great staff and very clean. Went south when a second room was accidentally booked. Instead of talking to me since I was at the hotel they charged me for the 2nd room. Now months later they are refusing to refund charge. This is deceitful and unprofessional. Be very careful when you check out might have charges you weren’t expecting. Based on their dishonesty, and no regard for Marriott Bonvoy members, this is one place I will avoid. Book at your own risk.

Staff was really friendly and nice! and the bar was good!
- 1/5
Be very careful when checking out. I made an error in my booking when I extended my stay for another night. There was a computer glitch and 2 rooms were booked that I was not aware of. They went ahead and charged me for the room knowing full well it was an error. I was staying at the Hotel and it could have been resolved by talking to me, instead they decided to mark it as a “NO SHOW” and charged me for it. Despite having spoken to Marriott and the Hotel directly, they refuse to refund the 2nd night. Be very very cautious when booking this Hotel.

and nobody told us that we do have a credit for the breakfast! we just noticed the last day and it was so disappointing!
- 5/5
The valet parking price was by far the highest I have ever seen. That was disappointing on top of the 55/day resort fee.
- 3/5
Stayed here for the first time. Clean and central. Hotel staff unfortunately need more training with respect to making mistakes and following up with solutions. Our room was given a late checkout to a preferred guest which we had to wait a few hours for — solution was to receive a smaller room or wait for the room we reserved.Check out was just as underwhelming as we were given another rooms bill which the staff could not determine until I pointed it out after combing a $400+ invoice that was pending -our room was paid for in advance through Expedia. Not much of an apology from the desk clerk either. Many other hotels to stay at as I would not recommend this property simply due to lack of hospitality training. Mistakes happen, knowing how to fix them is ultimately what makes guests return.

I checked in at the same time some unhappy campers were checking in. The care and attention Jayse showed was exemplary! He was calm, listened and explained repeatedly but never showed frustration. Y’all have a gem in Jayse! I will definitely be back. This is our new go to stay in San Diego.
- 5/5
The bed was really comfortable the room was really nice n clean..what i disliked though was the price for parking $65 valet parking..thats insane!!!
- 3/5
When we arrived, despite booking well in advance for a room with double beds the front desk clerk informed us, almost with glee that they overbooked and we would have to take a king with rollaway bed brought in. We finally had a manager help us but it was frustrating. Then, we were told we couldn’t go on any floor but our own so we couldn’t access ice. Lastly, my bed was so uncomfortable I couldn’t sleep and was stiff and sore the next day. Plus, breakfast took forever to come.
- 5/5
Everything was great, our room was upgraded and check out was extended. The staff checking us in was very polite and welcoming.

Rundown hotel and not particularly clean. Staff are indifferent and photos / marketing are completely misleading. Not worth more than maybe $100/night.

Staff was very helpful. Front desk, bar, bellman, food delivery… everyone!!

We didn't eat breakfast on site. i parked a couple blocks away for our stay.

Excellent service at the front desk. Rooms spotless

Thank you for a wonderful and comfortable stay. Such a cute, chic boutique hotel! We loved the food at the bar, and the housekeeping team was fantastic. The entire staff was lovely and incredibly accommodating. The weather didn't allow the rooftop to be open; I definitely would love to return for that experience. Till next time.

The hotel is very nice, nicer than I usually stay at. The room was clean and modern. The bed was really comfortable and I loved the light up make up mirror in the bathroom. The Topside Terrace is a very cool outdoor bar. Drinks were good and our server even got us a menu from the other restaurant that had items we enjoyed more. I appreciated that.
- 5/5
Excellent choice to stay of a downtown San Diego experience....walkable to Little Italy! Excellent service!

The one lady at the front desk made us feel like we were how do say this politely (low life trash ) to put it mildly .

We truly appreciated the hotel’s aesthetics and the staff’s consideration and hospitality. Carlos at the bar and Jackie and Oscar at the front desk exceeded our expectations and we will definitely be back.

I loved that the rooms were clean, modern, and quiet.

Spacious room and great location
- 5/5
It is a very safe location that is walking destination to little Italy.

The hotel is nice, but the rooms seem to be aging a bit. The room we had smelled a bit musty the entire time, and it was clear that some of the furniture could us some updating. But overall it was a comfortable enough stay.
- 3/5
Two days living but only providing one day free WiFi
- 5/5
From the front desk, to the restaurant, to the cleaning staff, everyone was vibrant and friendly. The property is well kept and a popular place for the afterwork drinks. The food at Trade, the onsite dining, was tasty and it was among the first lobby restaurants that I frequented througout my 4 day stay. The valet service is a little expensive, but convenient. I highly recommend a stay at the Republic.

Hotel is beautiful and staff is nice. Just loud outside with weird noises all night.
- 5/5
Hotel Republic is a beautiful property. The lobby is luxuriously decorated, making you feel welcome and special at the same time. The staff were quick to accommodate when I had an issue in the room. I recommend this property over others for the comfort, walkability, and service.
- 2/5
Walls are paper thin. Very disturbing at night. Voices can easily be heard through the walls. Very disappointing, especially for the price. Never again.
- 5/5
Absolutely recommend this stay!
- 5/5
Very clean and love the add-on breakfast option on the reservation. Totally worth it!
- 2/5
Terrible hotel especially when you consider the cost. Maybe most people just like the lounge/bar area? Anytime rooms have their doors open or close you hear a super loud thump that is not normal. Walls are paper thin and you hear everything. Uncomfortable pillows. None of the outlets were working in the room. Ordered room service only to be served mediocre items in paper box and bag. Checkout via TV was not working. The TV remote itself was barely working. Probably one of the worst places I’ve stayed in.

- 4/5
Nice boutique hotel with easy access to the harbor, Little Italy, and Gaslamp. Enjoyed the overall accommodations 7 perks with my OneKey card!
- 5/5
There were free cycles on first come first serve which we used for a couple of hours to tour the harbour side. Parking is expensive so we used a garage a block away for $30 a day as opposed to their service. The hotel is lovely and central so the harbour is a 5-10 minute walk, little Italy 5 minutes, gaslamp quarter is a 10-15 minute walk. USS Midway 15 minute walk. Loads of micro brewery’s within staggering distance as well
- 5/5
Great location near Little Italy. Restaurant is too small and couldn’t take us, but we went to Carl Strauss around the corner. Room very comfortable.
- 5/5
Nice
- 3/5
Very subpar for Autograph. Looks nice and has cool decor. Common area downstairs is good. Breakfast os delicious and serving staff are great. But room smelled very moist and possibly moldy- they cut the bottom of the curtain in the shower possibly because of mold so more water would get everywhere whenever we showered. We told them about the smell and they said that they can spray a fragrance essentially…. Their double bed option is too full beds so don’t plan on having two people sleep in one bed.
- 5/5
Enjoyed my stay
- 2/5
The place itself was above average, but the staff was absolutely terrible. My Beats Studio headphones were lost during my stay when room service cleaned in the morning the first night and when I reported it, they offered no help at all. For how expensive this place is, it really has very little to offer. Definitely won’t be here again.

Valet is $65/night yet on a Saturday night there was no one out front to help us return. We had to call the front desk at which point someone came out and had us leave our car on the side of the street and assured us that the car would be put away. The room was very small compared to the advertised SQFT, something seemed off. The mattress was not too comfy. The pillows were worse, very flat with no support. The shower hot water worked well! TV had a good amout of channels! Lobby was nicely decorated and smelled good. The bar downstairs was friendly and make solid drinks!
- 5/5
Lovely place!
- 4/5
It was ok. The rooms were nice the view was decent. The parking situation is probably the worst. $65 "valet" parking only unless you want to walk miles. They don't give you any other options unless you are familiar with the area.
- 5/5
Perfect for a quick weekend getaway. Great spot, friendly staff, 6 minute walk from the Santa Fe Station and close to restaurants and shops in Little Italy. Clean room, comfortable bed, good breakfast room service.

We had to change rooms when we arrived because there was iron in the toilet. They need to work on housekeeping
- 5/5
Beautiful stay.
- 5/5
My go to hotel in SD.
- 3/5
This hotel is cute and is walking distance to the train station, harbor, and Little Italy. There is a cute bar in the lobby and a “rooftop” restaurant on the second floor. I would not recommend this hotel for large groups that may need to visit each other’s rooms (as our group of 8 needed to do). You can only access your floor with your key, no other floors. That’s a great safety feature for those traveling solo but really prohibitive for those traveling with others.
- 5/5
Great hotel. Clean, good service, comfortable bed, nice dining options, and easy valet parking. Will stay again.
- 5/5
Outstanding in every way.

Beds/ type of book that was booked was not available when we arrived. No call or prior warning of this was given. Very inconvenient and disappointing on hotels.com and the hotel itself. How do you over book the room people already paid for and reserved! They offered 1 bed instead of 2 and a cot. People aren’t paying that type of money for a hotel room to sleep on a cot, and not paying money to sleep with another individual when I’m here for a work trip and this is business oriented and we’re stuck sharing a bed with one another isn’t okay and should have never happened. The room was paid for before arrival there is no reason between both companies there shouldn’t have been a room taken off the site and not allowed to be booked by someone else.
- 5/5
Outdoor Terrace was lovely
- 5/5
Located in downtown San Diego, the location is convenient if you want to hop on a train or bus to and from the airport or surrounding areas. The room was also spacious, and the hotel had suitable food options. I never got a chance to try the bar. It closed early on the day I wanted to attend.

Everything was very nice at the hotel and at our room. The only complaint was that the windows were so dirty. You could hardly see out of them.
- 5/5
Absolutely love this location. It is no more than a 10 minute walk to most San Diego attractions. Also loved they had free yoga every morning and free Cruiser Bikes available. We’ve stayed at this hotel under many different brands, I believe it was a W at one point.

I paid for two rooms. The 5th floor room was cleaned during the day, the 8th floor room wasn't made up until after 5pm while we went out for dinner. That's a little weird to me. I am not fond of cashless hotel. We had to run out to get small bills $5 and ones for tips. CRAZY !

We did not requested a handicap room and they gave us one, was on the 3rd floor and there was no ice machine, a loud noise woke us up very early morning on a sunday, comfortable bed and nice room, but not the best location.

It was a lively check in process. The room was clean and spacious. The lobby had a nice bar. The area was a little noisy due to construction. But overall good stay! I would stay at this hotel again if I went back to San Diego.

Room was comfortable and the location is great. Definitely bookmarking this as a favorite

Property is nice even though rooms are a little dated. Good amenities. Surrounding area is a bit unsafe.

Although our double bed room wasn't quite ready when we arrived, Jocelyn and Jayse more than made it up by upgrading my friends and I to the presidential suite. They both went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable with F&B credit to show us how committed to our satisfaction they were. I would absolutely stay here again! Thank you!

Good location. Room is standard on the smaller end. Room phone didn’t work and was not fixed as promised. Staff is friendly.

Other than that, wonderful hotel, amazing staff, Patrick at the bar was the man! Chris on breakfast on point. Clean rooms, nice terrace. Excellent stay overall.

The staff was professional, friendly, and very helpful.

We really like service. Great job. Manager Jacky, Nisha was absolutely fantastic. Clean, stylish and location is great

The atmosphere was great as well as the location! We also enjoyed the food, especially the Tropicali bowl and churro ice cream sandwich.

This downtown property is very convenient to the SAN airport. The parking situation is a bit confusing and we chose to use the ($65/nt) valet for our one night there. Also, there is a $25 resort fee, which they will remove only if you spend $25 in their hotel. However, it is NOT a credit towards the cost--they will simply remove the $25 resort fee and then charge you the full cost of the food/drinks. This is not how it was explained to us at check-in, and for this reason, we can only give this hotel 4 stars.

This property allows animals and dogs were barking constantly all evening and late at night. Had to call it got so loud. Literally ruined our whole stay and was not conducive to sleeping or being in room at all.

A really great central location in San Diego. Was able to get to everything in about 10-15 min of a drive or have the comfort of even walking to certain places. Staff was AMAZING! Super friendly and professional.

Excellent location - Friendly Staff offered personalized service - Room was clean and spacious - Room service was priced well and offered a variety of options - Check-in/Check-out was quick and efficient - Great amenities adjacent to the property.

I loved our room and location staff were nice and accommodating. Unfortunately one of our towels had 2 stains from what seems to be fecal matter. Upon further inspection of the room we also noticed a large brown stain maybe 9 inches in diameter from what also appears to be fecal matter.

Low water pressure, out of bottled water, small beds, dated
- 4/5
Great location, friendly staff but weirdly complicated transactional arrangements with so-called 'welcome letter', charges vs. credits, access-levels based on loyalty programs, etc. We felt like we were on a lodging version of "The Amazing Race" with a pitfall, charge or extra fee trap if not very careful. Not exactly conducive to a calm, relaxed and casual stay.

Loved the location- wished the hotel had self parking owned by the hotel

Anyone looking to take a trip to San Diego, this is a great option. I would rate it higher but I did not get a chance to eat at the restaurants but the bed was comfortable for me which is key because i have a lower back issue. I had an awesome view from my window. Plenty of food options within 5-10 blocks and my stay was quiet!

Waited forever… came back at 4:07 PM still no room and waited until 4:40 PM Wouldn’t that not be true?

Great location and wonderful staff.

It was very clean

I really did not appreciate the front desk staff. They treated me like I was not valued as a customer. When I would ask for something they assumed I wouldn’t be able to pay for it. I was there for 7 days and asked for an upper room but they told I couldn’t within 7 days, after I kept asking. I will not be back at this hotel.
- 5/5
Hotel was top-notch; everyone from the front desk, bellman, wait staff and housekeeping were spectacular!
- 4/5
Location and Hotel were very nice. Valet Parking was pricey but we were able to find a garage nearby which helped. Apparently there is a service charge that is added and I was told it was in the fine print on Hotels.com when booking so that was a surprise. Overall we had a great time in San Diego!

Beds were wonderful! Maid service everyday without requesting it! Every staff member we met was so friendly. Would defiantly come back

The Stay here was quite disappointing. When we pulled up to the front and parked, no one came to the car. We got out and opened the trunk, my wife and I had several bags. About 5 feet away from us. Two guys were standing behind the podium, I walked up to them and asked them if the hotel had valet. Did you guys were standing under a sign that said "hotel Republic, San Diego valet", both these kids said "no, there's no valet at this hotel" I thought they were joking. I asked where are we supposed to park then, and they told us we can either try to find a spot on the street, or there's a parking garage about two blocks away. I was shocked. So they continued chitchatting and talking and playing on their phone, so my wife, and I unloaded all of our bags into the street, carried them inside the hotel. I then drove the two blocks to the parking garage and parked my car there. And went to check in. The check-in person could not have been more uninterested in helping us out. These experiences tainted our entire state. There's so many hotels in the area, don't waste your time here shockingly, the next afternoon, we were leaving, and we noticed that the valet is out front, instead of helping incoming customers, or videotaping and laughing at a homeless guy that was standing on the corner. This kind of behavior clearly reflects poor management. I will say, that the houseKeeper on our floor, and the bus boy in the restaurant were incredibly nice pleasant happy people.

We had a great stay- the hotel was quiet and clean. The downstairs lobby is beautiful and was great to grab a cocktail and breakfast in the morning.

A Great downtown Hotel. The staff are friendly- the restaurant is exceptionally good and the Topside Bar is a lot of fun. Our Go-To hotel when in San Diego.
- 3/5
The hotel and staff were awesome, no complaints. But the walls are very thin. Our neighbor seemed to have hus TV volume high and we could hear everything clearly. The mid rating is for that alone. Staff was amazing

Love the location clean and very welcoming

--- I had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The property is beautiful—very clean and quiet, which made for a relaxing atmosphere. The rooftop bar is a real highlight, offering a great vibe and views, and the bartender was fantastic. I also really enjoyed the breakfast; it was a great start to each day. A special mention to the evening receptionist, who was incredibly friendly and helpful throughout my stay. Highly recommended!
