Cute kitschy hotel

The hotel was recently sold and under new owners. It was like taking a walk back to the 50's -70's..it was frequented by rock and roll bands. It shows alot of history. The beds are very comfortable and the room was clean and smelled good. Even though it is located on a busy street it was quite.
- 2/5
I wanted to like this place. Price was great, reviews were mixed. I booked a two night stay and checked out after the first day. My 11 yr old found a used vape underneath the bed upon getting to our room. The walls were dirty, painted tile in the bathroom peeling, the restaurant onsite was closed (learned this right at check in), homeless people all around (outside) the property, walls were thin (crying baby in another room all bought), doors slamming all around us, toilet clogged twice, the list goes on. Thankfully they agreed to refund our second night since we left. I wanted to like this place, it had a cool vibe initially. It just did not meet the expectations. Bed was comfortable and they had cable, that was nice.

Staff here are so kind and helpful. If they hadn’t been so nice we probably would have left. It seemed liked maybe the motel was in the middle of a transition or changing owners maybe. The restaurant was closed and everything seemed sort of abandoned/neglected. Hoping whoever buys it brings it back to life- the style of it is very cute.

Comfy beds, Super slow WiFi, they offer you higher if you pay a fortune. It’s 2026, cmon now… Weird windows that you fold up or down. I guess good for air flow but even when u try close them, the noise from outside or neighbours is like they are in the room, so wasn’t easy to sleep peacefully. And they were kinda old and semi broken. Area is full of crackheads, and this was even when cab drivers said they have removed most of them because big tech had conferences in town. Maybe it was low season but def didn’t feel it was a vibe at all, felt quite dead (which was prob helpful or else sleeping would have been worse)

It‘s very „different“ to other hotels in a very positive sense! Everything is around a huge patio with a lovely pool, so there is a sense of community with the other guests nearly! Also the beds were super comfortable and the staff easy-going! And the laundry service was cheap and excellent! I loved the overall vibe there! I thought a location close to UN Plaza was great, but it turns out other neighborhoods might have been better for what I was looking for (nice little restaurants in walking distance etc.) Also a few small things in my room were not working (light switch, socket etc) and wifi was a bit too slow.

Stayed here for one night while visiting SF for a film festival and the staff was beyond warm and kind! A gentleman at the front desk (I believe his name was Orlando), upon finding out I was visiting for having a film at the film festival - was kind enough to surprise us with a bottle of champagne in our room! It was such a sweet and kind gesture that really moved us. This is a beautiful and very secure hotel that you can tell is maintained with such warmth, care and good vibes. The staff is all so friendly with a great attitude - and I only wish I would’ve brought my swimsuit - the pool area looked like so much fun! I’ll definitely be back! The area is a little sketchy but the hotel is very secure and the great staff makes up for it!

Staff was very friendly and helpful. Parking was safe. Pool was clean and warm. Water dispenser was broken. Beds were clean and comfortable. The property was well kept and absolutely beautiful at dusk when the outside lights turn on. Feels like you're not even in the city. (Except we heard gunshots at about 2:45am) There's no fridge or microwave in rooms which was a bummer but they did have an ice machine. Overall great stay and will probably be returning someday.

Neighborhood shows a side of the city that has significant opportunity for improvement. But didn't feel unsafe. At one point, even the staff stopped me going to my room, asking if I was a guest. However, clean and had all the necessities.

This place has hosted generations of touring musicians, artists, beautiful weirdos, and night owls. You can feel it in the walls. The kind of place where stories happened at 2am poolside and somehow became legend later. Even the iconic pop art pool mural carries a little Andy Warhol energy woven into it, which honestly feels exactly right for this place. The staff somehow manages to make you feel less like a guest and more like an old friend who finally made it back into town. The rooms are cozy in that effortlessly cool rock-and-roll way. And the pool? Divine. Truly. I completely understand how artists ended up staying here over and over again. I already know this won’t be my last stay here. The Phoenix feels like one of those rare places that becomes part of your story once you’ve been there.

Some of my requests. Did a 3 night stay and checked out on a Monday. When I first got there I signed up for premium internet, and I’m out all day .when I get back on the second night my internet had been throttled and Gave me a message saying I couldn’t connect anymore devices. Got it fixed but the internet was even slower than when it was throttled. Also on the second day I tried to use the services they offered ( dry cleaning, room refresh) while I was out, but was told they were unavailable. Which is ok , but they left me notices in the room saying they were. I also asked for new towels but never got them. In the morning , hours before checkout my access cards stopped working . Making it hard to take my things back and forth to the car ( I paid for fri- mon in advance mind you.) even with all that being said , I would still recommend. The beds are clean and sleep well, bathroom was anll good, and it was the perfect location for what I was doing. A few kinks in an otherwise great stay.

Outdoor area is very nice! Location is decent if you’re in town for work. Location is not awesome if you’re visiting on a weekend, it’s definitely better suited for weekday visits as some of the more appealing restaurants are closed on weekends. Room was clean, but definitely older & fixtures could use some updates, & street & neighbor noise was easily heard throughout the night.

Front desk associates stated pool was heated, but we never used it as it was too cold outside! But it looked beautiful and accommodating. The bar/restaurant was closed under construction. The room itself was gorgeous, spacious but not fully cleaned. The bathtub had shaved hair from previous guests, some things were dusty, and some of the bed headboard lights were broken. The uncleaned room and broken light fixtures.

Bad customers service They cancelled on me at the very last minute. When I arrived at the location, they gave me a thousand excuses—claiming they hadn't cleaned the room assigned to me—but no hotel actually operates that way; they simply sold my reservation to someone else. I had to drive six hours for this, and they didn't offer me any solution whatsoever. The refund is supposed to be available in 7 to 12 days. I am deeply disappointed.

Do not say here! First when I booked it said it was a 9.2 wonderful review. It offered a restaurant. Plus it offered a free bottle of wine for VIP members. When we arrived the sign was old and the neighbor so sketchy, unsafe to walk around, the room smelled bad, the bed and pillow cases were yellowish, the towels were old and the thread was lose, the restaurant was closed. They didn’t offer the wine. When I complained I was told the hotel was under new management. I tried to get my money back from Expedia to go to another hotel, and they weren’t helpful. For the price you can find something way better, don’t stay here!

Great character hotel. Staff were awesome. The restaurant is under construction - wish we knew this b4. No food on property. The actual hotel is rundown and old, nothing like the photos make it seem. The walls are so dirty and the carpet definitely needs to be replaced. Made the mistake of not looking up the area before booking; absolutely terrible. Lots of homeless. The staff was friendly, which was the only positive about this hotel.

The restaurant wasn’t open yet, but they said it should be opening soon. The area is the Tenderloin, so just something to keep in mind depending on your comfort level. We also loved the heated pool and also a nice outdoor yard with plenty of seating, which we really enjoyed. Only small downside was the toiletries, they’re pretty tiny and run out fast. My wife would definitely suggest bringing your own. Overall, we had a good stay and enjoyed it. We will be back.

Every staff member we interacted with was so friendly, helpful, and ready to make recommendations. The kids in our group loved the heated pool and the parents loved being able to sit right outside the room in the courtyard after bedtime. They didn't have any breakfast options. There was a restaurant next door but never any people in there. Really need to change that on the listing about offering breakfast. We wanted to change rooms because we had very inappropriate noisy neighbors, that can in for one night just to party. There were clearly open unused room but we were told they were booked and couldn't change room. Our two children couldn't sleep with the noise and gun shots on the streets outside. Rooms outdated. No fridge or microwave. Spiders. Pool needs to be cleaned. It was so gross and cloudy.
- 4/5
Very unique vibe! Friendly staff at the desk. It’s a shame the bar was closed for renovations. Courtyard was clean and pool was small but warm. Rooms were ok, walls are thinner and I heard water dripping most of the visit. Bed was reasonably comfortable. Location is convenient, but man there were homeless people everywhere in the Tenderloin District. Not the hotel’s fault and local folks say “it’s better than it was” but it made walking in that area uncomfortable. Great Vietnamese food in that area, very reasonably priced!
- 5/5
The staff was amazing and made the stay 5 stars. The surrounding area wasn’t great (lots of homeless, bodily waste, and drug paraphernalia), but food, shopping, public transportation, walkability were great if you don’t mind having to get through quite a lot of homeless for a few blocks.
- 3/5
The room was clean and the staff was extremely helpful and kind. The building definitely has remnants of that 60’s vibe. You can hear everything going on outside. Glass louvred windows were not efficient noise cancelling so when guests were partying until 3am it was not conducive for sleep. My room was on the first floor.

The restaurant and bar are closed, which was the main reason I chose this hotel. Our room was not ready when we arrived at 3:30, supposedly it has a 3 pm check in. No air conditioning and the ceiling fan didn't work without having the light on as well. There is no VIP service, no coffee maker, no robes, 1 towel each and one block from the sidewalk being used for a bathroom and drugs, making for the pool area to smell awful pending winds. Definitely a basic hotel, not at all my idea of 9/10 rating. At no time were we notified ahead about room not being ready or restaurant and bar being shut down.
- 5/5
Amazing as always!! Heated pool was perfect!!

Friendly staff, beautiful pool, clean rooms. Perfect sf oasis.
- 4/5
Extremely helpful and pleasant staff. Comfortable and clean room. All rooms have queen size bed even if there’s two bed per room. Very spacious room!!! 1950-1960 vibe. Large open court yard where you can just hang out. For the price we paid, excellent. Only $25 per night for parking. That a steal in SF. However, the hotel is right next to not so good neighborhood where you would not walk at night. We enjoyed the stay very much but walking to and from public transportation or simple walk to stores were bit unnerving. Oh, thin walls.
- 4/5
I was under the impression that the Phoenix had closed, so it was a wonderful surprise to see this old gem was still in business. No frills but dependable jewel in the heart of the Tenderloin.
- 5/5
Staff was great, pool was heated. It was raining so we didn’t partake, but the ambiance was so cool and eclectic. Staff was great and let us leave the car in the parking lot while we went out for an amazing breakfast down the street (Brenda’s soul food… also most excellent!) we walked to the Great American Music Hall for a show. Everything was easy.
- 4/5
The hotel itself was nice given the location, I felt very safe as a solo traveler and the staff was friendly and genuine! The only thing I would’ve liked was there to be a mini fridge and microwave in the room as I had leftover food that I couldn’t store and eat later but other than that my stay was great! Would definitely book again if need be!!
- 5/5
The retro style was so excellent! The location is pretty sketchy.
- 3/5
Far from being wonderful as described when I booked my stay, room very outdated in all sense of the word, furniture or the lack of it, bathroom old, exposed electrical wiring and switches probably done by handyman and not up to codes, the worst stong smell of mildew all this made me cut my stay short by a day, I had book for 02 left after spending one night, reviews should be more honest unless the definition of "wonderful" has changed without me knowing, very disappointed, staff was friendly, and bed was alright.
- 2.5/5
A very loud party occurring adjacent to my room started at 1am and interrupted my sleep.
- 2/5
This hotel says that they have a restaurant, bar, room service food and a free bottle of wine om check in. None of this existed. The neighborhood had a large amount of homeless amd drugs. The key card entrance did not work so we had to wait for staff to open. At time there was a sign that said they would be back soon and so we were locked out. Expedia has not made this right yet.

Loved the vibe! It was nice weekend away from the rainy Pacific Northwest. We were a few blocks from the BART and didn’t need to spend money on cabs or robot cars. We had a poolside room but didn’t use the pool. The decor was rock and roll and the speakers in the room we could tune to KEXP and have good music. The staff were accommodating and friendly. We would stay again in a heartbeat.

The Phoenix is our favorite get away in SF! The rooms are always clean and the entire staff makes you feel like you’re family!

I really enjoy the hotel it was clean and trendy and the staff was super nice. My only complaint is after giving them my email I received like 200 spam emails, which makes me think they somehow sold my email address? I’ve ever had this happen before and this was the only place new id given out my email. Idk it is pretty lame.
- 5/5
The rooms were clean and comfortable with a lot of character. The staff were knowledgeable and welcoming. Slept very well in the king bed and large, comfy pillows. We learned that the place recently had some challenges due to their location near a drug contaminant zone in the city and almost closed, but it seems they’ve worked it out and they had police, security, and city workers all over the place. We never felt unsafe. Such a cool property with a lot of nostgic rock history that you should look up. We’d definitely stay again!

Robert was warm and welcoming and accommodated our request for a 2nd floor room with balcony. Room was spotless, bed was comfortable and room was quiet. Slept like a baby. We are regulars and well be back.
- 4/5
Staff was very courteous
- 5/5
Easy and fast check in and check out!
- 5/5
Very cool, unique place! Nice and clean-VERY awesome staff! We absolutely loved our stay! THANK YOU!
- 5/5
This hotel was so stylish and comfortable. The front desk staff were extremely kind and helpful. We will definitely be back the next time we're seeing a show nearby!
- 5/5
Super helpful and friendly staff. Rooms aren't luxurious, but they are clean, comfortable and stylish. Appreciated ample onsite parking. Fun vibe - We met other guests hanging out in the courtyard. Enjoyed learning about the history of the building.
- 5/5
beautiful pool, staff very professional and welcoming, rooms are always beautiful, always a great coming to this hotel even for the price ☺️
- 5/5
Everything was great! Would stay again. Richard is the best!
- 4/5
Rooms definitely need some updating. It’s probably an electrical fire waiting to happen. Cool eclectic vibes. It had a cute courtyard and our girls enjoyed the pool.
- 5/5
Clean. Personal friendly service.
- 5/5
Fantastic
- 5/5
Love this SF Staple!!
- 5/5
Beautiful outdoor setting-peaceful and relaxing. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the staff was friendly and accommodating.
- 5/5
While the neighborhood may look unsettling, once you get inside you'll find an historic gem. Large, clean rooms with updated bathrooms, modern amenities, great connectivity for work, and best of all, a welcoming and always friendly staff. As someone who travels all the time and stays at Hiltons and Marriotts, this place has great character and is safe. Highly recommend!
- 5/5
End of an era
- 5/5
Great service from all of the staff, who were all super friendly. We got there early in the day and expected to have them hold our bags and return later to check in but they gave us a happy surprise when they said they had a room available for us. One note - the rooms aren't quiet to outdoor sounds. That didn't bother us because were where there for a party which was on property.
- 5/5
Great stuff and room is vibe
- 5/5
Love this place so much! So many great memories were made there.I will miss it dearly!
- 5/5
Loved the on site parking directly in front. The staff was excellent. I really wanted to go in the heated pool. Check in and check out times are absolutely fabulous.
- 5/5
The front desk staff both AM and PM were sooo amazing! The ambiance is SO FUN, the rooms are modest but the pillows were so comfy and the linens were fresh and clean. We didn't gumb much time in the room since we were in the city to have fun!! Every staff member was so Helpful, Accomodating and great warm personalities. Thank you !!!
- 5/5
Such a fun one-night staycation at the legendary Phoenix Hotel. Cool sexy room, warm dip in the iconic pool and fun in the courtyard with friends. With the history of the Phoenix and being a local musician, it had a lot of meaning to stay there. I hope someone keeps it going in January!
- 4/5
The hotel is a cool retro place, it's older. The room was very cold and the heater was ancient. The staff were helpful. The neighborhood is not the best
- 5/5
Just an awesome place to be staff always amazing pool super warm and parking perfect
- 5/5
Really enjoyed the ambience of this gem in San Francisco! Its a shame that it wont be around for much longer. We were disappointed that we didn't get to visit the bar and restaurant, they were closed on a Friday night - perhaps forever? not certain. Love you guys, keep it real!
- 5/5
Parking is secure Someone always at the front desk. Nice and helpful.
- 5/5
Excellent customer service, aesthetic fantastic, beautiful details, one of a kind. You have to stay here at least once! Culturally iconic.
- 4/5
The ambiance is hard to match
- 5/5
Awesome vibe! Too bad it's closing...
- 5/5
Great staff, great experience. Way better than expected in every way!
- 4/5
Very Courteous staff
- 5/5
quintessential classic San Francisco hotel not to be missed
- 5/5
Enjoyed the history of the location and that the star of the weekend had a private gathering here. Awesome sad to see it go.
- 5/5
California Mid-Century Modern bones through and through. Can imagine a hopping scene poolside or at the bar/restaurant when the weather is warm. Clean room and bath. Great shower with nice aroma-therapy toiletries. Ample pillows. Lots of drawer space if you’re the type who prefers not to live out of a suitcase.
- 5/5
We had a pool side room and expected it to be a bit noisy, but it was very quiet and relaxing. Sorry the place is closing.
- 4/5
Clean comfortable beds. Friendly staff. And Parking! Would like a coffee machine in room. Within walking distance Billy Graham Orpheum theater
- 5/5
Fun hotel; clean and comfortable!
- 3/5
place is cute but feels like a motel
- 4/5
Hate to think that it's closing at the end of the year. Great staff and close to so many amazing restaurants and the Grear American Music Hall.
- 4/5
Love the pool and the atmosphere
- 5/5
A gem in the Tenderloin. Always friendly staff, clean and comfy bed and a nice courtyard with pool to relax in. Conveniently located to many concert venues.
- 5/5
The people at the Phoenix are great. They are kind and welcoming and friendly. They made our stay better.
- 5/5
Staff was the best. Super friendly and helpful. Accommodations and location were perfect. Would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Staff are lovely. The courtyard is a midcentury dream, and the pool is perfect for recovering from a show the night before. Rooms are basic but functional - appreciated the room safe, the charming zine booklet, noon checkout and red mood lighting (there's normal lamps too). Mattress was comfy. Tea and coffee in the lobby if you're coming in late is good. Neighbourhood is fine if you keep your wits about you.
- 1/5
I went to another hotel, Hyatt Regency in San Francisco. The Phoenix Hotel is not what the images show, it is not even like motel. The staff friendly but the hotel was not to the level of my standards. I did not complain at all, I simple went to Hyatt Regency and stayed there, I am not happy that pictures and rating fooled me and it was not fair to me to face with such a motel as hotel!
- 5/5
The staff!
- 5/5
Room 11 great room poolside. Hope we get to go back
- 5/5
This place is a one of a kind, it's a goddam shame it's closing.
- 2/5
Prostitutes and strange men partying in the room next door until 5 AM.
- 4/5
My husband and I stayed here for a day trip. The atmosphere of the hotel is great, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Wish there was an elevator for my elderly dog.
- 5/5
Loive everything about the Phoenix. Particularly nice now that the drug dealers have been cleared off the corner. It deserves protective historic status.
- 5/5
retro staff friendly rooms clean quiet bed and linens swell
- 5/5
Amazing Staff ! Exceptional in fact . All employees I interacted with only exuded business ethics to the next degree. I would highly recommend staying here ! Amazing functions and events.
- 1/5
It’s not good
- 5/5
CLASSIC HOTEL
- 3/5
Sad to see this place closing down
- 5/5
Great place to visit.
- 3/5
The staff was amazing. We had some really loud neighbors and they moved us as soon as we mentioned it. They also saved us a parking spot during the concerts. They really went above and beyond! The downside - the place is old and walls are thin so you hear everything. We just didn’t sleep great at all. The area around the hotel is rough. Human feces on the sidewalk, really dirty. The upside - the staff, and the vibe of the hotel is rad. We loved the courtyard and all the plants.
- 5/5
Great hotel, central location, nice staff.
- 5/5
Amazing history, great facilities, great price and, most of all, friendly staff made this a fantastic experience. Thanks!
- 5/5
Rooms and entire hotel very clean!!! POOL NICE AND WARM!
- 5/5
Staff was super helpful during our stay. The room is clean and tidy, no air con but there are fans for ventilation, bathtub is a bit worn out but overall we had a pleasant time.
- 5/5
This place is iconic ! It should be saved at all cost! We overcoat!
- 5/5
The pool was great! Safe. Awesome staff. Very convenient to public transportation. Will definitely stay again. Close to amazing restaurants
- 5/5
I had a wonderful stay at the Phoenix. The desk clerks were friendly and the property beautiful. The room was large and the bed very comfotable. I hope to return soon.
- 3/5
Not now
- 5/5
Had such a great stay, staff was very friendly and welcoming and Collin the receptionist was a gem! The pool is great and rooms are clean and cozy. Would 100% stay again. Thank you to all the staff!!
- 4/5
The phoenix hotel is super cute, the staff was friendly and the room was clean. It was unusually hot in San Fran during our stay and theres no air conditioning in the rooms so we had to leave our door open for awhile to make the room comfortable. Otherwise 10/10
- 5/5
WE LOVE THE PHOENIX!!
- 4/5
Nice retro decorated hotel. Friendly, helpful staff! Room was comfortable and clean. Neighborhood seemed a bit sketch, but hotel felt safe. Also, there may have been a curfew for businesses in the tenderloin neighborhood, as everything was closed by 10 PM, which is not the hotel’s fault. I would stay again.
- 5/5
Staff was super helpful and kind!
- 5/5
We will miss the Phoenix Hotel! Very fond memories accumulated over many years.
- 5/5
Loved it!
- 5/5
Hip thoughtful hotel in the heart of San Francisco. Comfy bed, nice size room. Totally retro feel. A special property!
- 5/5
Retro vibe. Loved it!
- 5/5
Super friendly and helpful staff, clean room, peaceful courtyard, great value. Would definitely recommend!
- 5/5
We have been staying there for 10 years. So sad to see it closing. Great place. Chill. Feel safe there
- 5/5
The only downside is the area, a bit noisy and sometimes a bit uncomfortable to walk around as two women with there being so many homes less people… it’s a real issue in Cali we’ve come to realize, very sad Overall stay was amazing!!!
- 4/5
The area around it was very very very unsafe
- 4/5
I didn’t mind that this was an older renovated hotel, and it had some unique characteristics to it, but the location felt unsafe.
- 2/5
If the rooms were updated with new windows and a cooling system, the stay would have been much better. Instead, we had to crank open all of the louvre windows for any kind of cooling. We sweat the whole night using just a sheet, and we got zero sleep from windows being open.
- 5/5
The hotel staff was great, the beds were amazing anf the entire place is great. Highly recommend
- 3/5
I chose this hotel because I thought it had a restaurant and or bar, It does not. It is only open for special events. The area around the hotel for food is not good. A guard at the door to let you into the KFC and walking past homeless asking for money. The hotel/Motel had a good vibe once inside the courtyard and around the pool area very safe. Bed comfy. Area not good.
- 5/5
Amazing, looks shady on the outside but AMAZING on the inside , a hidden oaises is the way to describe this hotel
- 5/5
The best—highly recommend. The rooms are excellent, and the pool scene is perfect. Stay here before it closes.
- 5/5
I love this hotel for our trips to the City
- 5/5
We loved the staff and the hotel. The courtyard and pool area is lovely. An updated bathroom would have been nice but for the price, it was awesome!
- 5/5
Staff were incredibly friendly! The room was too cool and retro. The pool felt amazing!
- 5/5
Bar and restaurant are only open during events now, other than that this place is amazing! Friendly staff, clean comfy bed, nice warm pool, and plenty of other bars to walk to nearby! Thank you!
- 5/5
Hotel is fun but the area around it is very sketchy
- 5/5
Great room!
- 5/5
Well maintained and cozy room, as well as friendly staff.
- 5/5
It was quiet and liked that you had to be buzzed in. Neighborhood not so great but it sf. Great hotel
- 5/5
You’ll be a bit surprised when you arrive. The area is gritty, to put it mildly, but pretty safe. And some good restaurants around. The attraction is that it’s everything corporate hotels aren’t. A really old style motel in the last place you’d expect to find one. Unbelievably friendly and helpful staff, delightful pool area. Terrific restaurant apparently (closed when I was there) Comfortable beds, super clean. Loved it and will be back. Possibly not a great area for kids. There are sights on the street you won’t want them to see. And can be noisy, both boisterous rock band guests, fire truck sirens and other unearthly sounds of lord knows what.
- 5/5
Amazing and beautiful
- 5/5
The check in attendants were both very nice. Great restaurant recommendations! Exactly what we were looking for ...a quick dinner then a delicious breakfast both within 3 min walk..
- 5/5
I had a great stay, friendly staff, I felt safe at the property - the whole place is a vibe too. I was pleasantly surprised I had my pup with me, dog friendly!
- 5/5
The room was perfect for our overnight stay. The only thing missing was a coffee maker but they did have coffee available in the lobby.
- 5/5
The Phoenix Hotel WAS THE VIBE! Liam, Oliver and Jake at the front desk were incredible! The property is fun and funky and was definitely what we are looking for! The room was comfortable! It’s an older property but taken care of well! We would definitely stay there again!!!
- 5/5
The hotel is what it is; an aging, somewhat past-its-prime monument to quirkiness. The high rating I am giving is in spite of the dirty and clamorous neighborhood. It is because the people who work there were tremendous to me. Gregory, Orlando, among others were quick with recommendations. This allowed me the courage to check out some terrific places in the Tenderloin for food that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. The beds were very comfortable. The shower was hot, there is good coffee and pastry nearby. I worked a lot, so I needed a place to sleep. The red neon lights in the room were…interesting. Unfortunately, if you turned them off, you also turned off the outlets next to the bed, so charging a phone was tougher.
- 5/5
Always great to be back at the Phoenix.
- 3/5
the staff was very friendly but the actual property does not reflect the pictures. the pictures made me feel like it was very Ace Hotel vibes but it was basically a run down motel with good pictures. the bathrooms and furniture are really poorly kept, stains on the wall/i was going to change hotels because it was so bad/creepy but ended up staying due to the short stay.
- 5/5
10/10 stay, would definitely come back. Consistent, professional and a good time.
- 5/5
I love the staffing, they were really friendly and helpful! I enjoyed the vibes and location. I highly recommend. I would definitely come back! Only thing I wished was a mini fridge but that’s about it.
- 4/5
Great staff and property. If going to a concert nearby it is perfect.
- 4/5
The staff here were very nice and helpful. The hotel has a cute retro vibe, and the pool is nice. The room was good too. The area around the hotel isn't g
- 5/5
Super chill and cool vibe hidden in plain sight. Wanted to find a place to stay near Civic Center, and the Phoenix deservedly has the highest ratings. Incredibly friendly staff.
- 4/5
Area was sketchy but once inside the hotel you're safe. It was a bit noisy. Staff is super nice!
- 4/5
facility. The room next to ours was noisy until near midnight - for some reason they keep opening/shutting their door, was a little disturbing. Our room had red colored fluorescent lights over the the headboard, which were connected to light switch as you entered the room. I use a CPAP machine to sleep, and there was only one plug-in by the bed. To keep my machine operating, we couldn't turn off the power to the light over our bed, that also was annoying. The staff was very pleasant. Don't know if I would stay here again.
- 5/5
The staff was amazing! I loved how walkable this location is. Our room was cute, quiet and enjoyable. I love the history of this hotel as well, I will come back for sure in the future.
- 4/5
1) Mini fridge in the rooms would be nice. Our room didn’t have one, not sure if others did? We did a door dash order and didn’t finish our sandwiches/potato salad. We ended up having to toss the rest of our food so that we wouldn’t risk food poisoning. :( It would have been a great late night snack. 2) Coffee/tea in the room. Our room didn’t have a coffee maker. I think there is coffee in the lobby (?), but sometimes it’s nice to be in your jammie’s with a nice hot coffee/tea instead of walking all the way to through the courtyard to the lobby to get a cup of Joe. 3) Bedside charging stations would cool. There was a power outlet that didn’t work so we had to charge our phones by the TV. We didn’t call and complain because we just worked around these obstacles, but still just some things to consider. Maybe our room was the only one missing a fridge, coffee maker or working outlet? I don’t know, but in spite of these things, I really enjoyed our stay and would definitely still comeback! :)
- 5/5
We stayed there for our courthouse wedding and it was very nice. An oasis of the Tenderloin!
- 5/5
But it is smack in the middle of the Tenderloin so that is to be taken into account But I enjoyed my two nights there very much.
- 3/5
Fine for a low cost last minute motel
- 3/5
The two staff members we encountered were very helpful and friendly. This is a cute vintage style motor lodge. It just wasn’t my personal style. It had a retro rock and roll style.
- 5/5
Staff was friendly
- 5/5
Perfect stay, incredible location, such a great vibe
- 5/5
Lovely stay - cool vibe!
- 5/5
The manager was very helpful and warm. Pool was very warm and the whole place had hip vibes.
- 4/5
Overall a good place to stay.
- 1/5
The first room I checked into had a funky smell and the bathroom had mold in the corners of the bathroom. After a second visit to the front desk I was able to move. The hotel is more like a motel …the pictures online are misleading. The staff is very helpful but the motel itself could use some serious deep cleaning and renovations. The area around the motel is super dicey… lots of human feces, homeless prople, and street folks doing mad drugs.
- 5/5
Best hotel in SAN FRANSISCO, I defiantly will stay here again
- 5/5
Super sick place. Will stay again.
- 5/5
Tenderloin gem! Had never stayed here before and didn't realize where it was located when I booked the hotel; however, I needed to be close to the courthouse. Like Cheers, every member of the staff took the time to know our names, give history about the area, and went out of their way to be of service and friendly. The only thing that I am disappointed about is the restaurant was closed while we were there. Despite its closure, we were permitted to take a tour of it and it is amazing! There is the most insane vinyl collection that lines the walls, overlooks the pool, and has multiple bars. This location has a retro feel that is a vibe all on its own. I will be back!
- 5/5
The Phoenix was great, I was there with my girl and kids, and we all had a great time in the pool and the overall vibe of SF coolness!
- 5/5
Its always amazing there. Great staff and I really like the vibe of the hotel. Not really an area where you want to walk around, but the hotel and parking lot is very save.
- 5/5
Overall the hotel was excellent, clean, the staff at the front desk was top notch and helpful for our first time in the Bay Area. Although the area around the hotel could be described as Skidrow, dont recommended walking around at night.
- 5/5
The staff at Phoenix were amazing! Super accommodating and so welcoming. Shout out especially to James. My only “complaint” is wishing there was a mini fridge in the room. We had some amazing meals with leftovers I would have liked to enjoy. My guess is it has to do with electrical capacity given the age of the property as a renovated retro hotel. Overall it was great, and I would definitely stay there again.
- 4/5
When we checked in the hotel staff was very friendly. We liked the retro setting of the hotel. It isn’t in the best neighborhood but it it centrally located to everything that we wanted to see. There were some great eating places within walking distance. There is a large homeless population but this is normally in large cities. We didn’t have any issues with the homeless and we felt secure in this hotel.
- 5/5
Staff was incredibly welcoming, Orlando was super helpful and friendly. The property was clean and the room was nice. Plenty of pillows and the bed was comfortable!
- 5/5
It was a fast, easy and friendly check in. It has a vintage charm, big patio w/table and chairs to relax or hang out. awesome heated pool and a parking lot. friendly staff, a small vending area and free coffee and tea
- 5/5
Vibey courtyard with (heated) pool, super comfortable beds, cool merch + fun drinks/snacks for sale and really great service. Location itself isn't *incredible* (my local friends were a little skeptical when i told them I'd booked a hotel in the Tenderloin - doesn't have the best rep, apparently?), but still lots of bars/restaurants if you walk 10 mins or so. Regardless, next time I come to SF I'll def be staying here. Really, really loved it.
- 3/5
It's an oasis in the middle of SF Tenderloin Out of the novelty, if you love mid-century modern and you're in the San Francisco Bay Area not looking to travel to Palm Springs this is an amazing mid-century modern structure beautiful not well kept but it's just amazing. Book one or two days at least. It has a Santa Cruz vibe very hippie ish look... Ultimately the price is so incredibly inexpensive it's worth it to just go spend the night or two and experienced mid-century modern.
- 1/5
Not coming back
- 3/5
The room was decent for the price.
- 5/5
Loved it. Phoenix hotel is the best place to stay in San Francisco hands down.
- 4/5
Loved the staff just the room was dirty doors weren't clean and hair in the shower that wasn't mine 😅
- 5/5
So good. Will stay here every time I'm downtown in the Bay area
- 5/5
Robert set the tone when we first checked in and it was great. We only stayed for one night be we will definitely be back asap.
- 5/5
I’ve been staying at this hotel for 22 years and it’s always the best! En suite bathrooms, very heated pool, friendly service, safe, clean, and cool.
- 3/5
On the second night there was a loud and violent fight in the courtyard, police were called. On the third night there was a explosion sound at 3am, that I later found out is fairly typical, due to a neighbor that regularly sets off M80s None of this is in the hotels control and I don’t blame them at all, but be aware, especially if traveling alone, that it’s an area to be a little uneasy in, especially as a woman traveling solo.
- 4/5
The staff is the best part of the hotel. They are very kind and helpful. My daughter had an audition and we wasn’t sure that we could check out in time. Without any hesitation or extra charges, we were allowed to check out an hour later.
- 5/5
Parking onsite was great! Lots of place to eat within walking distance. Bars too! Next trip we are bringing our suits for the pool! And there was an event, soooo much fun! Thank you Pheonix for making our stay so nice!
- 5/5
My very favorite place to stay whenever I'm in the city. The Tenderloin isn't exactly tourist central but that's what makes it so brilliant, with excellent little Asian restaurants and the friendliest little dive bars, not to mention easy access to everywhere via public transit. And The Phoenix is an oasis right in the middle of it all, with that lovely courtyard that feels like you've stepped back in time to a San Francisco of another era altogether.
- 5/5
Love!
- 5/5
This property was special and unique. The front desk clerks at night and in the morning were kind and helpful. The atmosphere was fun and upbeat. I cannot recommend enough
- 1/5
Bad choice all around. Only positive thing was the staff.
- 4/5
Clean, comfortable rooms. Free coffee in lobby. Good WiFi, but it blocks VPN.
- 5/5
Easy to find. Easy to park. Clean and welcoming.
- 5/5
Lovely oasis in the middle of SF. Can’t miss the heated pool!
- 5/5
The staff is very friendly, professional and helpful. They gave recommendations for places to eat, and I felt safe throughout my stay. The room was clean and so cozy on arrival.
- 3/5
We were looking forward for our stay because this nice Hotel- Motel style reminded us of the Ace. We book our stays based on Bar/restaurant accessibility. From the advertisement it shows that they have both so we booked this place over other choices. Sadly when we got there to check in, we asked about the restaurant but the host said they are not open and only available for booking events. If we had known this unfortunately we would have not booked. Over all our stay was nice, pool is heated, the people that work there are super nice and the bed is comfy. There is a wall surrounding the hotel so you feel safe and it’s decorated really cute. There is someone on site 24 hours to let you in.
- 5/5
It was amazing great staff
- 5/5
Amazing property BUT it is San Francisco
- 3/5
No breakfast, not too clean, $430$/night.
- 5/5
Excellent service, has great history, the receptionist was so friendly, helpful, well traveled and knowledgeable. The location is convenient to walk to any other parts of the city. Would definitely recommend and will come back!
