Reviews
The Hotel Shattuck is a centrally located hotel in downtown Berkeley with a convenient lobby bar/restaurant. Guests appreciate the friendly staff, modern and well-maintained rooms, and proximity to local attractions such as Cal Berkeley and the Greek theatre. However, some guests have complained about load mechanical noises in the walls, dated rooms, and inconvenient parking at a nearby garage for a fee.

staff is great. Property could use a little refreshing, especially cleaning the dirty carpets.

Breakfast ends at 11. Showed up right at 11 other still eating breafast and they refused to serve breakfast and would only off lunch. In room breakfast menu went to 1:30 so we were surprised
- 5/5
Extremely cheerful and helpful staff. Historic hotel with all the modern conveniences so you get both charm and all the necessities. Loved it. Restaurant was also great for breakfast. Very fresh berries, bacon and eggs cooked just as ordered. Would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Excellent, helpful and friendly staff
- 5/5
The hotel does not have parking on the premises. It is necessary to park in a parking garage, several of which are nearby. They are expensive, as I suppose should be expected in a busy downtown.
- 4/5
Great location. Loved the staff and check in process. Room was nice. Bathroom was small. Had a hard time in the shower as it was tiny.
- 4/5
breakfast not included but expensive
- 4/5
Room was clean, broken faucet but clean, comfortable and great staff.
- 5/5
Very nice location, friendly staff, nice rooms, would definitely stay again or recommend to a friend

Good location. Great breakfast. Friendly service
- 4.5/5
Great location, lovely space and environment. Noisy, I think it was the fridge
- 4/5
It was very nice. Big room too. Location was near Bart. The bathroom door is a sliding door that doesn’t close all the way. It has a frosted door, which in the middle of the night lights up the room when your partner uses bathroom it at 3am maybe. Use your cell phone light, so you don’t wake up other person.
- 4/5
Nice, well maintained historic hotel. I genuinely like hotels with character, and this fits the bill.
- 5/5
Wonderful and unique hotel!
- 5/5
My sister and I had the best weekend at this hotel. The check-in staff were great! The Bar staff serve the best drinks and Amari greeted us and made sure our arrival and departure went flawlessly.
- 4/5
Very good
- 2.5/5
Location very central. Street noise Pillows all firm and stuffed full Hole in my bath towel and no shower cap provided in the room Insufficient staffing in restaurant for breakfast-no one visible when I arrived and waited several minutes to be seated
- 4/5
Nice room… great location.

Exceptional
- 3.5/5
The location was great. The staff was very friendly. The room was comfortable. The room was very expensive for the what the room provided.
- 4/5
Good location near downtown and BART Security concerns after dark
- 3/5
Close to UC Berkeley
- 4/5
Very good
- 4/5
It was a decent experience
- 5/5
Great place to stay. Rooms are clean, staff was friendly and helpful, the beds were comfortable. The restaurant was great, live music there some nights as well. Nice bar area. Close to shopping/Berkeley / restaurants. Would definitely stay there again.
- 5/5
My second stay at Hotel Shattuck Plaza was as enjoyable as the first. Staff are most pleasant and the location is hard to beat. Room was neatly decorated and quiet. Looking forward to my return.
- 5/5
Could use a thicker blanket and thermostat was hard to figure out but loved our stay otherwise including breakfast at Zino
- 5/5
Great location
- 5/5
The staff was great.
- 3/5
This hotel is charming but could do so much better. There was no chest of drawers for clothing, a faulty shower, and they have changed the restaurant breakfast to only a $35 buffet with cold eggs. Staff is young and very nice but can’t seem to help. No business center. Tiny gym. Disappointing.
- 4.5/5
Staff was very pleasant and accommodating to our requests. Our daughter’s graduation week was so much more enjoyable because we had a place to stay that was close to Cal

The water would not drain from bath tub and it took a while for someone to come up. The toilet would intermittently not flush, and we had to keep flushing to make it work. The coffee machine was not working and we had to call twice to get someone to come and fix it.
- 3/5
we didnt have hot water for showers in the morning. but the staff was really nice and we could see they were working really hard.
- 1/5
The couch bed only can fit one person, very uncomfortable. The website didn’t accurately describe. The facility didn’t maintain well, balcony very dirty, ice machine didn’t work, noise from people talking on the street and bus running, air conditioning sound. Only has blanket, no quilt or duvet,
- 3/5
For the cost it should at least have air conditioning that works. Also not provided the wine I
- 4/5
breakfast was buffet only extremely expensive
- 4/5
This was a really beautiful room in a nice, walkable area near Berkeley. Nice bar and restaurant area with coffee, pastries, and a to-go breakfast option. The only quibble is that bedroom dresser was somewhat old and drawers did not close properly. This was an odd oversight in an otherwise excellent property.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel. Clean room. Staff always helpful and friendly. My favorite place to stay while in Berkeley.
- 4/5
Historic hotel but pricey

Lovely historic hotel. Perfect location in downtown Berkeley.
- 2/5
I have stayed at this hotel several times due to proximity to the university. You will never know what kind of room you will get at this hotel. Some stays have been decent with comfortable beds and varying sizes of the bathrooms. Our last stay was horrible. The best was terrible with springs actually jabbing my rib. I was sore for 2 days post. They had a portable AC in there which was a big surprise and the water leaked from the bathroom sink. I will avoid this place going forward.
- 5/5
Wonderful hotel. Clean room and friendly staff and great location for visiting UC Berkeley. We were greeted from morning until night by the staff and the hotel bar and reception area was always lively. Highly recommend!
- 5/5
Good
- 3/5
The restaurant downstairs by the lobby is terrible. Definitely avoid it!
- 1/5
Shattuck Plaza Hotel in Berkeley was the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed at in my entire living life. We were offered a 25% promotional discount for a two nights day. The offer was not honoured because we were not staying for two consecutive nights. The promotional email nowhere stipulated that two consecutive nights were required. The bedside lamp didn’t work the in room safe didn’t work. The showerhead didn’t work. The coffee maker didn’t work. The room was freezing. The thermostat was impossible to adjust. It was in a hard to reach dark space. Front desk person Derick obviously had no authority to resolve issues and should not have been interacting with guests. He did no more than a programmable parrot could’ve done. Do not stay at this hotel. It is a terrible experience.

The staff were helpful and kind. The room was clean. I like the location and the local stores, and amenities surrounding the hotel. The breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant was delicious. I would recommend this hotel. Only street parking or Valet.
- 5/5
Clean rooms, great bar and wonderful staff.
- 5/5
Clean rooms, great bar and wonderful staff.
- 5/5
The standout at the hotel was the staff. I especailly appreciate the young lady who checked us in, she made it so seemless and made sure the valet took care of our car, then greeted me by name throughout our stay. Looking forward to being a regular customer here when we come up to visit our daugther at college.
- 5/5
We loved our stay! Had fun and salable fun place. Great restaurant and wonderful dinner!!$
- 5/5
The breakfast was excellent, and the staff was awesome! Nothing
- 5/5
Clean room. Great staff. Room service was good.
- 5/5
This is just a great little hotel. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my stay and did not want to leave. I said I wanted to sleep and was given an extremely quiet place that was just what I needed. I would and will book Shattuck the next time I need a hotel in the East Bay.
- 1/5
HVAC was difficult to adjust, in room safe did not work, coffee machine did not work, no Kleenex in Kleenex box, bedside lamp did not work
- 5/5
Great stay at the Shattuck. Rooms were clean, staff were friendly and helpful, and the location was perfect for a walk to the Berkeley campus. Great food options near by! We will definitely be back.
- 1/5
Terrible stay. They ran out of the room that I booked with double beds then upgraded us to a suite with a pullout. Initially I was pleased but then we saw the pullout and it's wasnt suitable for anyone to sleep in. The crossbar was right on our lower back. We had to book another hotel at like 10pm. Thank goodness we found one. Also the phone didn't work and were were not provided enough towels.
- 5/5
The staff was very helpful to get me a different room for the remaining 3 Days
- 5/5

- 5/5
Friendly and convenient location
- 4/5
Clean room & staff was nice
- 2/5
The staff were very friendly and helpful however the room and its condition had much to be improved on. The room itself was feet from the elevators and shared a wall with it making noise throughout the day and night. Avoid room 500, 600, etc. The bathroom door was a sliding one but never stayed closed, the shower water was always lukewarm warm and the general condition had much to be desired. Just a tough stay in general.
- 5/5
great property and staff, will def come back!

STAY ELSEWHERE…..you will be glad you did!
- 1/5
We had two rooms, valet parked a car, ate at the restaurant, drank at the bar and spent plenty of money at this hotel over 3-4 days. I knew this was a historic hotel and we chose it for its charm and central location. The only good thing was the location. When checking out I informed the staff that our shower didn’t drain, which got worse and worse throughout our stay. I was showering in standing water and even showed them a picture…so gross! They apologized and offered free coffee or breakfast. I said it was bigger than that. They assured me the manager would contact me because they could not do anything more than that but would let him know. The manager never called. Three weeks later I called and emailed the manager, and I included the gross picture. He eventually apologized by email and said they would address the problem and fix the drain issue. WHAT? There was no shock and real concern, which indicated that this was a normal complaint. There was no monetary compensation of any sort. After spending my entire career in sales and service, I couldn’t believe it. I personally would have handled this differently in many ways so that there was better communication between staff and the customer, the way complaints were handled by management and finally I would make sure my customer knew they were valued. You have a choice when traveling…..don’t choose a hotel that does not appreciate your business.
- 4/5
The hotel is fine. The beds are way too small.
- 3/5
The ac and water pipes are noisy
- 5/5
Even though this beautiful hotel is in a not so nice area of Berkley I felt safe .
- 5/5
Clean rooms.
- 5/5
This charming 1915-era hotel provides thoughtfully appointed rooms and exceptional service. Anything I asked for, from sewing supplies to laser copies, was quickly provided. Since I was traveling solo I opted for the Business room, which comes with free wifi, plenty of outlets, a refrigerator and coffeemaker, and the most comfortable bed ever! The hotel is connected to the restaurant Zino, with food to die for.
- 5/5
Clean room well updated. Super friendly and professional staff.
- 3/5
“Deluxe” King Room is misleading as it was one of the smallest hotel rooms we have experienced. Room descriptions should include square footage. Comfortable bed and adequate bathroom, but had to repeatedly request wash cloths. Good location.
- 3/5
The hotel is nicely located downtown, but it is showing its age. The rooms were clean but could use some updating. Tiny elevators - although they were quick .
- 5/5
Love this boutique hotel
- 5/5
The room was clean, but small. Staff is excellent. Convenient location
- 5/5
Classic building but modern bathrooms. Super convenient to BART.
- 5/5
Extremely helpful, friendly, polite staff from doorman, front desk, to housekeeping staff. Great location at BART station, convenient to UC Berkeley.
- 5/5
AC not working properly, Fixed with two calla to maintenance
- 3/5
I did not utilize any of the amenities as I was just looking for a comfortable place in downtown Berkeley for one evening. And in the regard, it was fine. That said, we had a service animal with us, which they insisted on charging us a $75 pet fee, even when I made it clear various times under the American Disabilities Act that is not legal and service animals are not considered pets. I ended up staying at the hotel and paying the fee despite this as it is exhausting to have to argue and find another accommodation. Just want to detail the experience we had so that any others with service animals are aware.
- 5/5
My favorite place in Berkeley area.
- 5/5
The room was very clean and the staff gave excellent customer service.
- 4/5
Beautiful historic hotel. Location is convenient to Cal campus but the immediate surrounding area is a bit rough. Convenient to the BART
- 4/5
I enjoy my stay
- 5/5
The Hotel Shattuck is in a great location, the staff were so helpful and kind, and the rooms were great. We would definitely stay here again!
- 5/5
Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Room was clean, comfortable and spacious. Very convenient location with lots of food options and very short walk to UC theater. I stay here every time I go to a concert at the UC theater and it’s always great, I will continue staying here every time. Plenty of parking options around hotel, if you don’t want to use valet.
- 5/5
My daughter and I have stayed at this hotel three times in the past year and a half due to water polo tournaments being held at U.C. Berkeley. We chose it originally due to the easy walking distance to Cal, but we grew to love the friendly staff, comfortable clean rooms and welcoming atmosphere. The decor is very nice. The food that we ordered through room service was very good.
- 5/5
Great location near BART and public transit. The staff was very friendly, the room comfortable and clean. Will stay there again!
- 5/5
Great location and very nice staff
- 4/5
The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The location is walkable to many restaurants and UC Berkeley. It was a bit noisy with outside construction. Would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
It was great. All of the staff that we spoke with we nice and very attentive to our questions.
- 5/5
We always enjoy staying here. It's centrally located to be able to walk to the campus and around town. Sometimes we get a bathroom that is small and there is no room to keep our toiletries, however this time we had a good size bathroom with plenty of space. Always recommend the Shattuck.
- 5/5
Cleaned the room every day!, front desk very helpful and valet parking excellent!
- 3/5
Could have water in the rooms
- 5/5
My room was smallish - not uncommon with old buildings, so I was expecting that. Every inch of it was designed and decorated with care. The shower was a relief after a long day - great water flow and plenty of hot water. The morning parking attendant was very attentive, a nice man who urged me to come back - not rotely, but warmly. I'll be back.
- 5/5
With that said, very friendly staff, clean, safe and comfortable bed and pillows. Overall, reasonable experience.
- 5/5
Excellent location and comfortable hotel rooms. Quiet room and comfortable bed. The restaurant for breakfast should be avoided: food sat in the kitchen, was cold, inedible. Restaurant staff inattentive.
- 4/5
Also the price that I had paid at the time of booking several months ago had reduced market Lee nearer the time I forgot to price check near at the time otherwise would’ve bagged decent saving The staff are very friendly and helpful, and we had a pleasant day nonetheless Like anything else if you can secure a good bargain, then it’s worth a stay because it’s only a short walk to the BART train otherwise if you end up paying similar to the rates of hotels in central San Francisco, then the whole hassle of taking Bart back-and-forth doesn’t worth it Also, there’s nothing in the area of notice. They’re only a handful of cafés and restaurants. We didn’t dine there but the choices look very poor so there’s hardly anything for you to do or find in the vicinity.
- 5/5
Lovely hotel. Very clean. Friendly, helpful staff. Great location very close to BART.
- 5/5
The hotel was clean and updated/restored well! The staff was very attentive and friendly. Highlights were a cozy bed, great shower and walkable location. I recommend staying here!
- 5/5
Friendly helpful staff, clean room
- 5/5
Clean rooms great staff Anthony Jocelyn and Kelly really took care of us. I can’t wait till our next visit.
- 4/5
Great area for walking, beautiful views, clean room. Plugs available on one side of bed only, room organization could be better. Had problems getting seated for breakfast, and order never arrived after 40 minutes.
- 5/5
The breakfast was so yummy.
- 5/5
Upto the expectation
- 5/5
Nice historic hotel. I'd stay there again.
- 5/5
This hotel is a total gem! Beautiful lobby and bar/restaurant area, friendly and efficient staff, and nicely appointed rooms: a really comfortable bed, elegant linens, excellent toiletries in the bathroom, and little touches like a good makeup mirror and cushioned hangers in the closet. It was a little noisy on my side of the hotel, but it's right in the heart of downtown Berkeley, so it's exactly what you'd expect. Walkable to literally everything you could possibly need/want, including a plethora of great restaurants. Reasonably-priced valet service, as well as a self-parking garage across the street. Gym was small but had everything I needed. I would definitely stay here again!
- 5/5
We had a great time!
- 5/5
Staff helpful and courteous
- 5/5
We loved this hotel. Everyone who worked there was super friendly, the food was wonderful in the bar, hot cider in the afternoon! Beautiful historic hotel
- 5/5
It's a great place, love it. Quiet and in the center of Berkeley. And next to the BART station (1 min walk)
- 4/5
Yes
- 5/5
Last minute booking but great and easy stay. Very cool area.
- 4/5
My only negative comment would be that it would have been nice to have some amenities in the room. For example, all the soap dispensers were affixed to the wall. It was difficult to take a bath as there was no bar soap and I had to keep standing up to pump soap and then sit down in the bath again. No cotton balls, q-tips or robes. No extra blanket in the closet. Thjese are things one would expect to find in a hotel like this.
- 5/5
Yes the clean room was so welcome after the long day of traveling, and the sparkling bathroom invited me to take a wonderful, relaxing soak. All the staff were very nice, and the restaurant was excellent. My son and I had 2 delicious appetizers, and another day I met the chef and told him the breakfast home fries were the best I’d ever had, and he told me one of the secrets. And I loved the chicken apple sausages! I would definitely stay here again!
- 5/5
Staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful
- 5/5
Everything was great. Enjoyed the food.
- 4/5
Location, bar, clean, nice staff.
- 5/5
Fabulous. Great location. Comfortable.
- 1/5
Hotel wasn’t clean!
- 5/5
Great location
- 2/5
The room is so small for the price I paid. The shower jar is not working, the furnace is not working. I will not stay there anymore
- 5/5
Great location. Friendly staff. Comfortable bed and room
- 5/5
The staff is super friendly!
- 1/5
heater didn't work. Front desk was not helpful and all. Would not recommend.
- 4/5
The Best historical building hotel in Berkeley area in my opinion, compared to Berkeley City Club, Claremont, Graduate Berkeley, SenS
- 5/5
We had a spacious corner room with a view. Hotel was charming, with a great bar. Location just off Shattuck is great for walking up to campus or exploring Berkeley. The MARTA station is right across the street, which would make access to SFO and San Francisco by public transportation easy. We enjoyed the hotel breakfast as well as the numerous restaurants and bookshops in walking distance.
- 5/5
I the staff at check in were beyond excellent. the young man at the desk Derick, was very nice helpful and even helped me to the elevator. what service!
- 3/5
The room was very small and a bit drab.
- 5/5
Good job team!
- 5/5
The staff was fantastic. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. The room as well was very clean. My only concern was the shower curtain was too short, causing water to be everywhere out of the shower. Thankfully there were enough towels to put one on the floor. If I ever need to come back to Berkeley I will return!
- 5/5
Friendly staff, large room, very quiet.
- 5/5
Enjoyed the staff and restaurant
- 4/5
the hotel is in a good place.
- 2/5
Beautiful hotel but the street noise will break your heart. Beautiful place, luxurious rooms, beyond excellent service but I got no sleep with the disturbingly loud and heartbreaking encampments of displaced and mentally disturbed people who live on the surrounding streets. It's the state of downtown Berkeley. The hotel is safe and clean. It's nothing that is solvable but I suggest insisting on a non-street facing room.
- 5/5
Surprisingly very nice. The front check-in lady And the lady bar Attendant was sweet and pretty polite . The dinner table and service was cool. The valet guys were also friendly. I definitely have them on my list for not stay. Thanks
- 5/5
Friendly staff
- 5/5
Was great staff was awesome very helpful
- 1/5
One other guest told me he had to change the room two times over his long stay at this hotel. Requested a refund. Manager gave us 50% off the first of the two nights. Ruined our visit/ vacation in the area! Need to figure out how to contact Expedia for the refund to be processed.
- 4/5
Friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable room. Charming hotel.
- 4/5
Room was small but clean…loved the make-up washcloth.
- 4/5
Very clean cozy room. Helpful staff from the start.
- 5/5
Nice room. Friendly staff. Festive hot chocolate one day and cookies another at holiday time.
- 5/5
Luisa and ALL the staff ARE OUTSTANDING! Friendly, helpful, kind--thank you!
- 4/5
Great location for Berkeley event. Staff was great. Our room did have a window leak. Parking was not included. Options valet for $50 or public parking.
- 5/5
From the moment I walked through the door, I felt welcomed.. I was greeted by Danny, who was very pleasant. He offered me a glass of champagne. Next I was greeted by Jario, (sp) the Valet, he was very polite, he offered to get bags from my car. My room was spot on clean. Nothing lacking. I was further impressed by dining at Zion’s. I had the crabcakes with toasted ciabatta, and my main course was the salmon. Everything was so tasty. I closed and opened my eyes on the second bite of everything . I do that to remind me I’m not dreaming. The second night I took a chance and ordered the burger and oh my gosh, it too was amazing. My overall stay was a five star experience! A must return visit is in order. Renèe Denise 12/2025
- 5/5
But the restaurant on the 1st floor was excellent for brunch
- 5/5
Fantastic staff! Great location! Super clean! Looking forward to a return trip!
- 4/5
The room was clean, and had a nespresso machine, nice touch. The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast was ok, but overall a good stay and I’d go again.
- 4/5
They had a lengthy computer system glitch where they were not able to provide room keys, and wrote down my credit card information on a piece of paper (not secure) while their computer system was down. Lousy customer service. I expressed concern about my card information being written on a piece of paper, and they were dismissive. The room was fine, but it wasn’t great.
- 5/5
Staff and location!
- 5/5
Very nice and friendly staff, room was ideal for my needs.
- 3/5
Old hotel, spacious room but a little noisy on street at night. Had difficulty figuring out the heat pump the first night and the room was cold. Only a very light weight cover on bed. There was also a towel in the bathroom with lipstick on it. We took that towel down to front desk and got a new one. Everything was ok the next two nights. I like old hotels but was disappointed with this one.
- 4/5
Clean and fine
- 5/5
Easy check in, very responsive staff, beautiful room. Charming historic hotel in great Berkeley location.
- 5/5
The hotel was spotless, but what set it apart was the staff! At every step of the way they made sure we were welcome and accommodating. All you had to do was Text and they handled everything. If you have a student there, it’s very close to the college and walking distance to stores and restaurants. The food I had there Was excellent
- 5/5
The staff were incredibly helpful and nice! Property is close to everything! I would stay here again!
- 5/5
great service, comfy bed. expensive but elegant bar & restaurant
- 5/5
Wonderful, will stay here again.
- 4/5
Gracious staff, nice room.
- 5/5
Clean room, newly refurbished with comfortable beds. Excellent location. Good price.
- 5/5
Nice hotel with a retro vibe that is located in the heart of Berkeley.
- 5/5
Book a suite at this hotel!
- 5/5
very clean and staff was very helpful
- 5/5
Friendly staff, comfortable room.
- 5/5
Staff was amazing, room was nice. Very easy access to BART. Would stay here again
- 4/5
clean room-well kept older building. good location
- 4/5
The view from the room was horrible and atrocious. There is a literally a construction zone in front of the window. This is not the hotel's fault but still they should really not give those rooms to any of the customers.
- 5/5
Room was spotless, just incredibly small. Great for one or two people. Staff was great. I would stay here again.
- 5/5
Cool
- 5/5
Perfect location for the race and lovely staff! Room was cozy!
- 5/5
Not busy at all but great service and the food was fantastic!
- 5/5
Great service
- 2/5
The elevators are small. One not working, long waits. Locks on doors that stay open so people were slamming doors all night until they see you have to.move doorknob to get door to.close, woken up all night , night bartender acted mad when we got a drink at 10:30. We had drinks and dinner earlier there and it was better service with hospitality. Pillow were like bags of cement not kidding. We have liked in.past but will stay eleswhere. We spent a bit on valet, dinner, drink and stay. It just wasnt great.
- 1/5
Stay was lovely, however, we are embroiled in a dispute with the manager over breakfast charges that were made against our room while we were there. Someone assigned their $80+ breakfast to our room number. Our credit card was charged without our approval. Very frustrating and unethical. Do not recommend staying here.
- 5/5
Friendly staff, pick check in.
- 5/5
Love this hotel! Wonderful front desk staff! Awesome restaurant and amazing hosts/staff.
- 5/5
Very courteous staff and spotless room.
- 4/5
Hallway carpets need an upgrade. Otherwise was terrific!
- 5/5
Great place in a great location
- 5/5
Property and staff were great, beautiful hotel, the area leaves a lot to be desired.
- 3/5
Average hotel
- 5/5
Had to valet because there’s not a lot of parking options, but it puts you right in the thick of everything. Close enough that you can walk to the campus if you’re seeing a show at the Greek. Surrounded by dining options hotel is immaculate and beautiful.
- 4/5
Clean room, courteous staff
- 3/5
Nice staff
- 5/5
Friendly staff, accommodations lovely. Caring crew.
- 5/5
The staff is always pleasant and helpful. The rooms are always clean and well stocked. Always a pleasure staying here.
- 5/5
Was able to check in early which was really helpful for me as I was traveling for work. Hotel is great, room was clean and nicely set up, great shower. Location is amazing, so many options for food and entertainment.

- 5/5
A really nice place!
- 5/5
The staff were very helpful. We had a clean, spacious and comfortable room.
- 5/5
Nice hotel and great staff. Very comfortable.
- 5/5
Great hotel with amazing staff. Everyone here is so friendly and helpful. Room is very comfortable and well stocked, really like the espresso machine in room. Great location with a lot around. I stay here when my son and I go to UC Theatre and it is a super short walk. I will continue to use this hotel exclusively when we go there, can’t ask for more.

Service and all staff were amazing!
- 5/5
Fantastic location and overall really nice hotel!
- 3/5
Did not provide simple things like a water bottle in the room, and that was disappointing.
- 5/5
An enjoyable experience
- 5/5
Lovely hotel and great location. Nice restaurant and bar!
- 5/5
Our first time staying at this hotel. Not too far from the Greek Theater! Great location and service! Would come back in the near future.
- 5/5
STAFF IS ALWAYS EXCELLENT. I LIKE THE HOTEL, THE GOOD QUALITY BREAKFAST AVAILABILITY AND THE LOCATION. I HAVE A BUSINESS IN BERKELEY AND INVARIABLY STAY HERE WHEN I AM IN TOWN.
- 4/5
Nice stay, great location
- 5/5
Great staff convenient location for me
- 3/5
There are almost no shops around the hotel. Downtown Berkeley is in a terrible state.
- 5/5
Comfortable room and friendly staff! Will stay here again.

We’ve stayed often in the past, but will not return. The management, by phone, promised a refund of one night when our plans changed, but later when Expedia called to confirm, they reneged and denied the refund. It didn’t matter that we were loyal customers who always stay there when visiting the area. Dishonest and disloyal.
- 5/5
Gorgeous hotel, friendly staff, upgraded to a suite, easy street parking, excellent breakfast, easy walk to the Greek Theatre for an evening concert. Will absolutely repeat!
- 4/5
Room very comfortable, except for the foam pillows. U need an upgrade there.
- 3/5
Friendly staff, valet was reasonably priced, less than $50 (there’s a parking garage across the street if you want to self park) we were tired so we did valet, good location, clean, a few homeless but we didn’t feel unsafe. Restaurants & cafes nearby. The bed was rock hard & lumpy. I barely slept because my bones hurt from the mattress & the room was sparse from empty spaces where dressers & maybe a chair was at some point.. it was weird.. we didn’t unpack because there was no place to put our clothes.
- 5/5
Quick and easy check in. Everyone took care of us. Smooth from check in to finish. Cute hotel. Very friendly staff
- 5/5
Very nice hotel. Staff is great!
- 5/5
This is a beautiful boutique hotel near the University. Magnificent staff. Walkable to shopping and all kinds of great dining options. I found it quiet.
- 5/5
Great hotel in Berkeley. The room was quiet, very spacious and the bed slept well. The staff was friendly, courteous and attentive. Overall, no complaints!
- 4/5
It’s Berkeley so there was a lot of homeless around the area so outside the property its out of the hotels hands they make you feel safe there I love the location close to everything breakfast was delicious and valet service was quick the only issue I had was the tv was not working and when I called down to see if they can fix it no one answered
- 5/5
Staff was friendly, hotel is convenient
- 5/5
Place was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful.

Hotel Shattuck is located in downtown Berkeley right next to the BART station, which makes it convenient to take the train directly from the Oakland airport. The area has quaint small businesses which make the area lively. The room was large, we enjoyed the extra seating area and the pullout sofa bed. We would recommend this place to someone who will be traveling to the area and for our future returns back to Berkeley.
- 4/5
The staff at the front desk and valet were very friendly and nice. I can’t say the same for the bartender on duty Saturday evening. He was downright rude to the person at the front desk who was trying to help me break down a large bill to tip the valet. That was a little unsettling to watch.
- 3/5
Took a long time to get checked in. I said I wanted a quiet room and then was given one right next yo the elevator. I got a different room and the key didn't work. Finally got in and heating/cooling wouldn't turn on. Pillows were all super thick and firm. It's a nice place and iverall goid stay but lots of little glitches.
- 4/5
Our room was very nice and the staff helpful. VIP perks were not initiated.
- 3/5
check in. Bartender ignored me when I was at bar waiting to be helped. TV didn't work and the 5th floor was kind of runned down. Definitely wasn't worth the price.
- 5/5
Another great stay.
- 5/5
Our room was beautiful and everything was in tip top shape. The staff were super friendly and helpful!

The staff at The Shattuck Plaza were excellent—friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the room was a terrible experience. The bed was hard, pillows scratchy, and a loud pumping noise kept us awake all night. We couldn’t figure out where it was coming from—at first we thought it was the AC, then the pipes—but in the morning discovered it was the mini fridge. We checked out very early due to the noise, and even recorded the noise to show the front desk what we had to deal with the entire night. Unfortunately, no refund was offered. For a sleepless night at a hotel of this level, that was very disappointing. We would never stay here again.

Beautiful hotel. Friendly staff. Great place to stay for a concert at the Greek Theater! Small issues like the front desk area needs some organization and esthetic improvement in comparison to the gorgeous bar and entry, but it was fine and functional. I really loved the efficient and reasonable valet parking. Room was very nice. It was right next to the elevator and not too noisy. I was using a cane so it was convenient in my current situation. The bathroom had a small repair needed to the wooden frame around the sink but it was cosmetic, and everything worked perfectly. I will return next time we have a concert at the Greek!

Suggestions: Provide 2 bottles of house water for the Keurig coffee machine.

Staff was extremely friendly, very accommodating willing to help very courteous. The room is very nice. Location is excellent highly highly highly recommend.
- 5/5
Fantastic staff! Truly the best.
- 5/5
Had a great stay! It was clean and well maintained. Appreciated all of the food options within walking distance and the proximity to the Greek Theater. I will definitely be staying here again.

Neat boutique hotel

I travel often for business, and Shattuck is my "go to place" for visiting Berkeley... can't beat the location and ambiance. This time I had a mixup, and left something important in my room (when I checked out). I called later in the day, and the staff saved me! they not only tracked down the item, and held it for me for pickup later in the day. Thank you!

Excellent location. Excellent staff.

The hotel is perfect, but the best part are the staff! They are professional and friendly the minute you walk through the door. Also had a delicious breakfast downstairs before checking out. Loved the entire experience.
- 5/5
The Hotel Shattuck Plaza lobby and rooms are very nice, and we had a very comfortable stay. The area right around the hotel seems to be undergoing some redevelopment, so most of the shops in the block are closed. However, there are plenty of restaurants, shops, etc., close by and we did not have any problem coming and going from the hotel.
- 5/5
Love the charm of the hotel. Great location. The bar and restaurant were great. Breakfast avo toast highly recommended.
- 5/5
This is a great place.

David greeted us with warmth and we had just driven 8 hours, so that was truly appreciated. The room was clean and the bed very comfortable. The bathroom lighting was great and the shower had great pressure. Great stay! Had a delicious brunch of Falafel Wrap and my son had a delicious Chicken Wrap.

The wonderful, friendly, helpful staff absolutely made this visit. The rooms are small but modernized and clean—if you’ve stayed in hotels in Europe you it will feel familiar. The lobby and bar / restaurant are gorgeous but the stairs and hallways are a bit worn down. Which can come with the territory in historic hotels so I didn’t really mind. Hotel is walking distance from so many things, including the BART which is literally around the corner. Overall delightful stay, made even better by the staff.
- 4/5
Very friendly staff and good touch on an old hotel. Yet the restaurant is really not great and neighbourhood feels very unsafe.
- 4/5
Room was pretty small, but in a good location to jump on Bart and head to the city
- 3/5
Bed is to old hard and not comfortable to sleep hard and can feel my daughter moving allot
- 3/5
Nice central location. Staff was mediocre at best and didn’t make an effort to be accommodating. Not a 4 star hotel but still nice

great property, great location and helpful staff!

Wonderful 2 day stay, had a great room and the staff was amazing. Will definitely be back..

I paid for a room for my wife and included her name on the reservation. The person at the front desk insisted I had to be there in order for her to check into HER room. She had to argue with him for 30min before he finally realized it's HER room! She was in a bad mood the whole 2 days because of that which ruined our trip!
- 5/5
Great location! Went for a concert and will be back

Excellent choice
- 5/5
Overall, the hotel is nice. There is a slight smell on the second floor. (Musty) The staff is friendly and accommodating, especially Chris. I had a small problem with my room and he was able to find me another one. Made the room change very easy. Food was wonderful and the wait staff was wonderful.
- 5/5

A hidden gem in downtown Berkeley with lovely staff, convenient walking and a great bar and restaurant. Our room was quiet, clean and comfortable. Very relaxing in what can be a rather chaotic city.
- 5/5
Wonderful historic hotel and absolutely incredible staff.
- 5/5
The suite was amazing and quite spacious! It was completely immaculate and the bed slept well. The shower had great water pressure too. Overall, it was a great room and we enjoyed our multi-night stay!

Great location; easy walk to Bart, UC Berkeley, Berkeley Rep, and restaurants, in addition to the hotel’s Mediterranean restaurant, Zino’s. Historic hotel with quiet, well-lit, and comfortable room.

Great downtown historic hotel. We walked to the Greek Theater for a concert and had a nice comfortable stay on the 4th floor.
- 5/5
Staff was amazing! The experience was great!
- 4/5
Stunning hotel, just we had to ask for the free bottle of wine at check out. We were in a room that had pavement work done from 4am. So terrible night sleep.
- 5/5
My boyfriend and I had an incredible stay. We came for a concert. We enjoyed incredible food and desserts. We will be back ♥️
- 5/5
The check in and check out was perfect, door people, lovely, room cleanliness was terrific, bar staff was mixed (was there 2 nights: first night the bartender and server were terrific, the second night the server was literally unpleasant)
- 5/5
Hotel staff is really nice. Room service and bar was really nice too. Parking is a pain. But thats just because its downtown Berkeley. Room is a bit small but tons of amenities. Kurag coffee. Mini fridge. Wonderful shower. Complimentary wine. Would stay again.
- 5/5
Convenient location, nice staff, comfortable rooms, parking and restaurant available. Downtown so expect traffic, noise and city life. Beautiful hotel, excellent bar, upscale atmosphere.
- 5/5
Great location and property. The breakfast was excellent
- 3/5
Fantastic service by staff after dealing with a room change due to broken AC and shower head.

This was my second time staying here. I love it. Beautiful, clean and very friendly and helpful staff from the front desk to the bellmen and everyone in between. Great location in Downtown Berkeley with restaurants in walking distance, close to Cal, and public transportation steps away. Highly recommend Hotel Shattuck Plaza!
