Reviews
The hotel is in a prime location with friendly staff, but it is an older building with shared bathrooms and no parking. Some guests have reported cleanliness issues and problems with amenities such as lighting and water pressure.

Staff were very helpful at check in as there was no parking in front of the hotel-but they helped make it work. The parking garage nearby was more expensive, but easy to access
- 5/5
I used a parking SpotHero app online which found a nearby lot for overnight was $18. Reasonable.

Close to Berkeley campus, this is an older building with layers of paint. The lobby is a bit old fashioned and the room was clean with clean beds and bathroom. Limited amenities and a fridge in the room.
- 3/5
Least that could have been done is to be given a room close to a better and bigger washroom given the age of the guests. My mother is 81, I went to the reception to ask but they gave me vague excuses to not help in anyway. We did find the other 2 common washrooms to be used by the guests but we found them on our own, the manager didn’t bother to share that info when we checked in.

The staff member at the front counter was nice and welcoming. But where shall I begin? First of all, I was given a room with one bed instead of two. I was quickly moved to a two bed room, which I appreciated. When I went to look for the bathroom, I was shocked to find there was none in the bedroom! They have communal bathrooms and showers. I have never experienced this in my 30+ years of staying in hotels. Why it was not clear that all the rooms to not have a bathroom or shower, I do not understand. The quality of the bathrooms were not the best. This hotel really needs an upgrade. Bathrooms are old and dingy. The room had mold. There was a loud humming noise until 2 a.m.! My daughter left and stayed with a family Member who lives in Berkeley instead of staying in this hotel. I will not stay here again. The pictures online look nothing like the rooms in person. Beware!

Chinese owned hotel, old building, located in the middle of downtown Berkeley walkable for tons of food - Trader Joes, Shake Shack, McD, burgers, Thai, Greek, even Burmese -- Berkeley (and SF by extension) has amazing variety of authentic international food options of very good quality. Room had refrigerator/freezer, microwave and coffee maker. Next door was the Nash Chinese restaurant, open late. Soap, shampoo and drinking water were provided free. Iron and ironing board in the room. Staff was helpful. Two beat up working pianos in lobby. Very close to Downtown Berkeley BART station. Kinda musty overall. Many rooms have bathroom down the hall (a cheaper option). No A/C. Drink machine had warm sodas. A couple homeless folks on the sidewalk outside (non aggressive). King mattress I had seemed a bit worn out.

I will say the first room we were given hadn't been cleaned so it was a bit gross to see unmade beds and dirty towels. They did immediately put us in another room that was clean. We paid extra to have a private bathroom, and we were quite pleased with the size and cleanliness.

The only thing this hotel has going for it is proximity to Berkeley for events like Cal day. The hotel is old, dirty, the windows don’t close, street sounds don’t let you sleep. I felt like I left with hepatitis. The covers were dirty. The tv didn’t work, curtains were ripped and barely covered the windows. This is a type of hotel one rents by the hour.

The hotel was very poor quality, stains on sheets when I arrived. Shared bathroom per floor, bathroom was poor quality too. Parking was okay. But this was definitely not worth it and I’d like a refund.

You get what you pay for. It was a very run-down place. It was not very clear from the booking listing that the room would not have its own toilet or shower; there was one shared toilet and one shared shower per floor, which is fine if you know that is what you are getting when you book the place, but, like I said, it was not clearly stated when I booked. Also, the shower was very, very small, and it was gross; missing grout and generally looked dirty. I put one of the hand towels (provided in my room) down on the shower floor because I didn't want to stand on it with my bare feet. The room was very dated and there were these nasty stained curtains to cover the window, which made the place feel beat up and run-down when it otherwise would have just looked outdated and basic.
- 0.5/5
nothing no private bath, no air conditioning, no parking, not even a loading zone in front of the hotel.
- 1/5
This is a scam hotel. The photograph/graphic on Hotels.com is a misrepresentation. The actual property is very old and run down in a poor area of Berkeley. No one answered the ring doorbell, until an older gentleman came with his groceries and happened to be the manager. He then made me pay again even though I already paid on Hotels.com. I was no longer interested in staying, but couldn't cancel so I ended up using the shower and taking a nap. It was freezing in the room. No heater working. I later discovered the window was open. Horrible place. Avoid.

Nash hotel is a dump. Owners force guests into expensive room upgrades twice the cost threatening to share common bathrooms and lying saying rooms are full and beds too small. No heat, , no blankets just thin sheets, room was 40 degrees windows left wide open. Toilet wouldn't flush, sheets filthy and stained, broke ironing board. Expedia quoted $200 for 2 nights rude owner charged $450 on arrival. Human feces covered sidewalk outside. I didn't see one other person here. Stay away.

While the room had a small area with a sink and mirror each floor has a shared bathroom and shower. This doesn't bother me especially in these older buildings in the bay area but I don't remember it stating that on the web site.

Rooms were very clean. Staff was nice and helpful. Hotel restaurant was delicious. The historic 100 year old hotel was close to the venue and other restraunts and cute shops. Very charming. Id stay there again and again.

The bed was actually comfortable. Wanted to start in a positive note. First night we could not sleep at all because the room smelled. Smelled so badly that we still were aware of the bad smell in the middle of the night. It did air out by next night. Not sure why they did not foresee this problem. Very thin walls. Very run down. Very good price. Will pay more next time to stay anywhere else. We paid extra for a bathroom in our room did not realize that’s a luxury

The area is in great location and close to everything. Parking is a huge issue. Property and rooms are in poor and outdated condition. Everything is old, falling apart, towels and bed sheets were dirty with yellow spots, discussing. I would never stay at this hotel again.
- 1/5
The hotel was probably nice 100 years ago. Today, it is very run-down. It smells very old, has flies, the mattress was moldy, no mattress pad, polyester sheets, no air conditioning, issues with fixtures, squeaky bed, shared bathroom, no hair dryer, one pillow per person, broken toilet paper dispenser, etc. If it were priced like a youth hostel, some of this would be forgiven. No parking and no pets allowed. The towels were nice, and there's a great coffee place nearby. The area is both sketchy and amazing - it's downtown Berkeley.
- 5/5
Hotel Nash is a budget hotel, so don't go in expecting anything other than the basics. But if you want to see Berkeley, it's clean, comfortable, and has a fantastic location in the downtown next to campus. I feel I got my money's worth.
- 1/5
It was relatively clean. Thin walls and extremely noisy. People were up talking loudly all night long and we didn't get any sleep. We are a couple and we booked a King, but they gave us two single beds, which were hard, small, and very uncomfortable. We didn't want to go back and ask for the right bed because the person at the front desk was miserable and acted as if it was a huge inconvenience to have to check us in. I would never go back there.

Nice little hotel.

It was a very nice place and it reminded me of hostels I've been too before. I like how it had a cafe and 24 hour access. The way the bathrooms are in the hallway reminds me of my stay in New York.

We always stay at the Nash when attending a live show at the UC Theatre Berkeley. I would highly recommend for proximity to the venue and the staff is very helpful. Good little Chinese restaurant in the hotel as well. Nothing.
- 3/5
I was originally going to SF with my wife, but that fell through, so I ended up going solo-- I booked a room at the Nash since I was going to a concert at the UC theater across the street. They have shared bathrooms on each floor. I knew what I was getting into and figured I could rough it a couple of days without showering---I just had to share a toilet---but a couple of times, the commode was backed up. This means, either the plumbing is bad--or it just shows how many savages there are in our society and these people don't know how to use a toilet like a grown up. I feel sorry for the facility staff that have to clean up after these animals on a daily basis. other than that...the room was clean, the bed wasn't the most comfortable, but I slept. Def wouldn't be here if my wife went came along....but, I would if go to another show by myself.
- 3/5
When we arrived, we had to ring the doorbell to be let in, and walked through a restaurant to get to the elevator. The hotel in general is quite old, and although they have made efforts to keep it clean, it just has a dilapidated feeling to it - there was a blocked window in our bathroom that did not close and leaked cold air, there was chipping paint in the bathtub, exposed wiring, etc. The room even lacked bedside outlets to charge our phones overnight and only one side of the bed had a nightstand. Most concerning was that when we entered the room, windows had been left ajar that opened to a fire escape - we could have walked in to someone lying in wait - as a woman traveling with her young daughter, I consider this a safety issue. Our room was next to a room full of young adults who were loud/partying late into the night - didn't even try to take action, as I saw a sign at the front desk giving a phone number to call if you needed anything at night. If no one is on-site, why would I wake someone else up to help?
- 5/5
The location was perfect and I liked the safety of the building. Our room was clean and comfy and I appreciated the fridge and microwave. Friendly staff and good value. Parking was tricky and only 2 hour until 6

Omg. I thought im in Madagascar. Think again and again before ur visit
- 2/5
The place has a strange smell, there were hairs on my sheets and in the shower, and there was a guy staying on my floor who was talking to himself very loudly all night. I ended up leaving early because I couldn't sleep there. The owner knew this guy was staying there, but when I complained in the morning after one of the nights he really made a lot of noise, the owner said I should've called reception or the police. I didn't think anyone would be at the reception at 3 AM.

The front door was locked when we arrived. No one on duty. We entered thru a restaurant and waited for staff to arrive to check in.
- 2/5
It’s not worth the money had no working shower and had to move my car several times due to no parking available
- 1/5
There was constant banging around from the floor above and the room was not that clean. Crap still on the toilet seat.
- 5/5
Very gracious. Allowed me to check in very early.
- 1/5
We paid $184 plus tax per night for a basic room with no cable TV, no working telephone, too-soft beds and uncomfortable pillows, no private parking, no full ironing board, windows that would not stay open nor would they lock at night, I couldn’t on but it’s not worth it. We’re now staying in a hotel a couple of blocks away, in a suite for $183 plus tax per night! So, a dollar less for a bigger hotel room!
- 2/5
The room smelled odd that it gave me a sore throat whenever I was in it. Also, the sheets were so massive that they just got tangled on the bed.
- 4/5
No heat, but clerk brought a portable fan heater. Not much sports on TV, no ESPN. Nice room for the price. Make sure you book a private bath!
- 2/5
The room was pretty clean except for the dust on top of the picture frame. The neighborhood was dreadful; garbage all over the sidewalks. Room was noisy; door did not fit well, mattress was very soft. This place is extremely dated and in very poor condition. We went to Berkeley for family weekend and this was the only place available; now I completely understand why. I am shocked that this establishment is affiliated with Hotels.com. I seriously have to question their properties now.
- 3/5
I enjoyed my stay although a little bit much for a small room, tv would not work half the time. Bathroom is not included with room unless “upgraded”. Staff were nice and friendly. Food options nearby, it can be a little noisy, the beds were nice and clean and very comfy.
- 5/5
This ex-hostel was a good place to stay on a non-busy weekend. Shared shower with about 10 other rooms. Most were vacant which made it nice for us. Staff was very friendly.
- 4/5
Great customer service and flexibility
- 1/5
Unclean areas, outdated, front door lock not secure, no A/C, uncomfortable bed, shared restroom not a good idea (shower too small), refrigerator doesn't work properly.
- 2/5
The beds were old and uncomfortable. The furniture was old and tired. The was a bunch of lint in the screen in the bathroom, we were located above the laundry. There was some kind of water leak in the bathroom. Building was very old.
- 1/5
This is a horrible nasty place. The owner/front desk person tried to scam. It was for my daughter and me so I booked one room with queen bed but he counted the head and made me sign a bill for double price for adding my daughter. Bedsheets had red stains. We just sat on the side of the bed whole night and did not even look how underneath the comfort looked since it looked scary. Also it had a bad odor the moment we entered the hotel.
- 1/5
bed linens stained and dirty...literally had to brush debris off the sheets. Plumbing under the sink fell off...let me say that again, a 2 foot section of plumbing fell to the ground and water was everywhere.
- 5/5
Affordable lodging near UC Berkeley; I'll be back!
- 3/5
It had no parking for a rental car. The lots available in the area did not do overnight parking. The one that did had poor reviews about breaking.
- 5/5
The staff was great
- 1/5
No parking and no bathroom in room, no tub
- 2/5
There is no bathroom inside the room. Everyone has to share the bathroom/shower in the common area. It's especially inconvenient at night! I guess there is disclosure before you finalize the booking but unfortunately, I did not see it.
- 4/5
We know this hotel is in an old building. The room was smaller than expected. The lighting was not working but the staff was very helpful and responsive and got it figured out. The fact that the light fixture was burned out and left a mark on the desk was a bit concerning. All in all, this hotel is as we have expected.
- 5/5
For the price, good deal with great location in downtown Berkeley and room not street side was quiet. Neat older building design (though a bit tight).
- 3/5
This is a quaint hotel perfect for seeing a show at the UC theatre. It has an ancient vibe going for it. The only thing I could say that was hard about the stay was the lack of parking, the sheets were a bit stained, and the stopper on the shower/tub was stuck in between but all and all a good stay. Especially if you plan on getting out of the bars or show late and need a nosh the Nash Cafe was open for some bomb food.
- 5/5
Loved the area and the vibe of the hotel. Very clean, quiet and comfortable. Window looked onto a small but beautiful garden. My only beef was low water pressure in the shower. But overall a really great choice.
- 1/5
Car window got smashed and bags stolen as we checked in, gone 5 minutes. Staff incredibly unhelpful.
- 2/5
It was overpriced for what you get in opinion. It was a little bit dirty and run down. It is an old building but not kept up well. I was just expecting something much nicer. The location is nice though .
- 2/5
It was completely unclear to me that you were supposed to have a shared bathroom at the price. I booked. They only told me when I got there. That is disgusting.
- 5/5
Very nice and friendly staff. Rooms are good quality and are worth the price. Rooms feel very safe and sound insolation is pretty good. Me and friends have stayed here multiple times (4) because the location is very good for eating and bars, as well as being close to Berkeley college. The biggest downside is there is no parking, and the nearby parking garage that can accrue a pretty high fee if you need to keep it there for many days. When I visit San Francisco I will always stay here because of the convenient transportation as well. Great little hotel!!
- 5/5
The Nash has the best value for the price of any hotel in Berkeley!
- 2/5
I found “dried tea leaves” inside the spout of electrical kettle. But after scratching it out, I found it was “dried roach”. Although I requested to unclog the clogged shower drainage and repair broken bedside lamp, they never showed up. They can do better by displaying the history of Berkeley as a historical hotel.
- 2/5
On the ad it states there’s a parking garage on center that is $25 for a day. I parked there then walked to the hotel I went to check in which took about 15 mins to get in the door (lady was having a conversation with co worker while I was waiting to come in) had to call to get let in , then the lady let me in she told me where to go to check in where I waiting longer. I called the number again and the man sent her upstairs to check me in. She apologized then upgraded my room. I asked about the parking if I needed my ticket validated she said no it’s free. Left about 5:30am and my ticket to get out was $37 will NOT be staying here again!! Advertisement on Expedia is not correct
- 4/5
It's in a good location. No parking is an issue but the lot isn't too far.
- 5/5
It's in a really good spot for getting around downtown Berkeley or onto UCB campus. The room I had was a good size, came with a fridge, microwave and electric kettle. The place has a lot of character.
- 4/5
The drop back is no bath room in side those guest room.
- 5/5
Location is the best quality. Bed was small and uncomfortable. I know you are basically paying for location. Would be nice to update the rooms, and get some better beds and pillows. Small conveniences like ice would be nice as well.
- 2/5
pictures of rooms are deceptive on their site.
- 2/5
Its a very old hotel with old carpet, doors, furnture. The are is great being close to Cal Berkeley and tons of excellent restaurants. My room is 10x12' but gets me sleep. A shared bathroom in the hall way. Not cheap but probably cheaper than most others nearby. 2 stars.
- 2/5
I had roaches in my room, no parking, no bathrooom in room
- 1/5
1. The bed gave me a rash 2. Basically no wifi 3. Freezing cold, they didn’t run the heat 4. Toilet didn’t flush 5. Cockroaches 6. Fire exit was blocked by metal grates and a wooden block that wouldn’t let you open the window 7. Carpets were sticky 8. Some lights and power outlets didn’t work. Scary to think about a short circuit inside the 200 year old walls when you don’t have a fire exit. 9. Front desk was never there

This shabby old hotel could have some charm with a decent renovation. But carpeting is dirty, fixtures are old, no one was generally at the reception desk, and there were bugs in the room and bathroom. Not a place I would revisit or recommend.
- 4/5
It was very convenient to go to UCB.
- 4/5
Cozy, intimate, quirky. Tiny stain on my sheets and towels, possibly from laundry machine. It isn't a high end hotel experience, but it was fine for a bed to sleep in
- 5/5
it is a college town. thats either a good thing or not a preference to some. i read the reviews prior to booking, and it is true the hotel is "run down," but it is still a space with a comfortable bed. also the shared restrooms arent too terrible. i never crossed paths with someone going in or out, and theyre clean. And you have your privacy. i was content with my stay at the nash hotel.
- 4/5
For where and what it is, and the age of the hotel, it serves as an affordable downtown option.

Delicious chinese food in the restaurant downstairs as a bonus
- 3/5
It’s a tired hotel. Carpets need replacing. So too the furniture. Just rundown.
- 4/5
The Hotel in itself is in pretty bad shape. But I would like to compliment the people that worked there. They were very polite, honest and seemed like good people who truly cared about you. The restaurant in the building also had good food. Will definitely come back just for the friendly faces and good food.

Communal bathrooms and showers
- 2/5
Dirty place, they have a restaurant on the bottom floor where the guests would come up to the rooms and talk super loud.
- 4/5
It was close to Berkeley, It was clean, it little outdated, wished for a few more ways to charge our devices, but for what we needed it worked out fine. If you are looking for an updated fancy hotel, this isnt it. Sheets and towels were clean. Worked for us.
- 4/5
This hotel is great just for what it is. I was in town to see a show at the Greek Theater, and just need an economical place to rest my head. This hotel is perfect. Proximity to BART, campus, all great. Little noisy at times but a great stay.
- 4/5
Older facility and it looks like a old dormitory. Shower aren’t connected to your room. Community shower and bathroom
- 4/5
Great location for UC Berkeley and Greek Theatre events. Near my favorite restaurants and pubs and Downtown Berkeley BART
- 3/5

- 5/5
Very friendly staff.
- 2/5
This hotel was filthy. I tried to find an alternate hotel when I arrived because it was so unsanitary. The location was noisy. The parking was unsafe and unpredictable, sometimes having to park blocks away. The building and room/bathrooms were rundown and unattended to. The only saving grace was the employee who was empathetic to my concerns and communicative.
- 2/5
The hotels.com booking did not mention that there were rooms with or without a bathroom. The person who I checked in with said I booked one without a bathroom. So I ended paying extra for a bathroom. The staff working there was nice. However, it was just an uncomfortable hotel overall. It’s an older hotel, seems much different than the photos. Smells old and is old. Toilets barely flush. There was an electrical outlet in the shower. When you open the window, you’re looking into someone else’s room. Parking...not what it is in hotels.com. It’s a public parking spot. You pay 4 hours max each time. After 10 pm it’s free. However, you have to start paying again after 7 am. Reminds me of old dorm rooms.
- 1/5
The hotel was quite dirty and extremely uncomfortable. The walls were so thin that I was able t hear pretty much everything what went on in the next room. I was not able to handle the smell any longer and ended up sleeping in my truck. Stay away from this hotel.
- 5/5
Very interesting historic building, clean, good size room and bathroom. Staff was extremely friendly.
- 3/5
If you want a taste of Berkeley - stay here.

The location is excellent for proximity to the university, but that is about it. Homelessness and dirty streets are a significant problem, but our room had additional issues. Although the staff was very friendly and accommodating to our requests for additional towels and pillows (after we paid extra for our unexpected third person) the room had no working coffee maker, the poorest water pressure I have ever experienced ( in addition to ineffective water temperature control), an inaccessible closet ( due to location of bed pushed against it), and an ant problem. We knew there might be issues as it is an older hotel, but for more than $200 a night we were more than a little disappointed.

I originally booked a hostel style room by mistake. The staff was amazing and found us another room right away. The room was clean, bed comfortable, and the hotel centrally located. It was a great place to stay before an exam.

Use of extension cords was hazardous. Bed linen was clean or I would have left. No water pressure in sink for which I did get a 10% refund. Not recommended. This should be a 50$ a night hotel not $230!

It was quiet clean and a little funky but I loved it for my overnight in Berkeley to see a concert. Will use the again.

Overall, my stay was fine. My previous stay was at a hostel, so I have pretty low standards. Shared bathrooms aren't a problem for me, but it's worth noting that there is one bathroom (toilet + sink + shower) per floor. That's ~25 rooms per bathroom, which could mean if it's busy, you could have long waits to use the toilet if people are taking showers. I only had to wait once, and I just went to the floor below. Everything was fine, but not great. The showers seemed good at first, but the showers drained very slowly and it wasn't long before it was up to my ankles. And for some reason, it would very suddenly jump to EXTREMELY HOT, BURN YOUR SKIN OFF temperatures. It would only stay that way for a couple of seconds, but it happened dozens of times during my shower. I eventually turned off the hot water entirely. The room was big enough for me and thankfully there was a sink and mirror in the room. The bed was comfortable and clean. The carpet in the room looked brand new. There were a lot of homeless people outside on the street near the front door, but that's just a fact of life in this area. I never felt unsafe, but it's a good idea to always be on guard wherever you are in the bay area. The wifi signal was strong and I never had any problems with it.

An old hotel off University - could use a touch of renovation. All around a good spot.

This place is perfectly adequate for a short stay. You can also save money by sharing a bath. There is also a Chinese restaurant attached to the hotel which is open late.

The beds were nicely made and clean. However there were stains on the rug, the curtain covering the closet was falling off the rod. There was no access to the closet becuase one of the beds was in front of it. The curtain on the window was also falling off the railings and was difficult to maneuver. The bathroom sink drained really slow probably because it was clogged.

Really great location in downtown Berkeley. Friendly staff. Really well-maintained classic old-fashioned hotel set up. Rooms were really fine: Clean, cozy, well-maintained, comfortable bathrooms. I will definitely stay here again when I’m in Berkeley visiting family; it was very convenient for them. Only negatives to report are some street noise, which I found actually cool But could bother some—I was looking right out over A familiar major street which was fun for me. Also if you’re there in the summer or heat request a fan. Great location and place for the price.

This property is definitely an old building. It has a Ton of history in Berkely. The staff is very nice and the rooms have been remodeled to today’s standards. It is not the Ritz Carlton but a cool nice clean place.

Spotlessly clean, and RIGHT on University, so took my Berkeley student son to breakfast and walked him to class thru beautiful campus. Perfect location! Cozy beds!
