The hotel has a great location and charming historic ambiance, but guests frequently complain about the lack of amenities, such as TVs and individual climate control in rooms. The staff is generally friendly, but service can be inconsistent. The property is in need of renovation and better maintenance.

first off, the hotel had signs saying the restaurant and bar were closed for renovation...not anything mentioned on the hotels.com site.....secondly, the first room they put us in was dank, and moldy smelling. the second room they put us in was bare bones, no ice bucket, cups, etc etc. We had paid for two nights, stayed the first night, complained to front desk, they said they would do what they could... after they did nothing, hotels.com gave me one key cash to cover second night...btw. hotel closed 1-6-26 FOR RENOVATIONS, WHY WERE THEY OPEN 12-27 WHEN IT WAS A NIGHTMARE???

I don't know if it because of new ownership and transition, but my wife and I were commenting that it seems like the soul is gone from the Monte Vista. I officiated a wedding there several years ago and it seems like a lot of the charm of the facility is missing. That charm is the main reason I booked there. I hope that it comes back.

The not so good: my mistake for not calling to confirm whether there were rooms on the first floor as I had just had knee surgery. There are not, and there is no elevator. This want a deal breaker… I can do steps one at a time. The room appears to be recently renovated, however, the bed squeaked each time one of us moved, and the floor squeaked. The blinds in the bathroom didn’t fit the space. And lastly, the most concerning: the man who. He ked us in stressed that he left at 10pm, and the front door would be locked at 11pm, accessible only with a code, which he provided. As the motel appeared to have only two staff people there, I asked if someone would be there overnight. His reply: “Not tonight”. I do not believe that the hotel had any staff on duty… which my husband and I found slightly disconcerting. There was a phone number provided in case of any problems… but that left us a little unsettled. I am hoping upper management will address this review so that others can book with the assurance that there is some staff on duty every night. Do note that the restaurant and bar are closed for renovations.

We stayed 2 years ago and had a great experience. Unfortunately the restaurant is closed. There’s no breakfast offered, and the answer was “we don’t know why.” They’re supposedly getting ready for renovations, but it’s just disappointing that it’s just as expensive to stay with the amenities gone. Room was clean, area was clean and open but ready for renovations. I hope they do renovate and open the restaurant, it was awesome.

If you want everything perfect go to super 8 but this place is awesome! Nice clean room, friendly staff, and beautiful property. You’ll get squeaky floors and no tv in your room. But you’ll get something away from the typical. Support local in this great little mountain town and enjoy a night without the tv blaring.

We've stayed at the Monte Vista before and loved the old-fashioned charm and little touches like the chocolates in the room. This stay was different. They were supposed to close for renovations earlier this summer, but those have been delayed, so the hotel feels like it's in the process of shutting down. No chocolates this time, hardly any guests. The restaurant is closed. My socks were dirty from walking on the floor of the room. Not sure I would stay here again until they decide whether they're going to remodel or not.

And I'm not convinced it was a Queen size bed. Although they claim all of their rooms are Queen size, unless you pay extra for the king. The rooms are not well kept Resulting in large cracks and small holes in the ceiling and walls so i cut them some slack due to the recent hurricane flooding in the area, although I'm not sure it affected this hotel. On the plus side, it is a dog friendly hotel, but for the price, I don't think you get your money's worth.

Beautiful building and room and very clean but no staff. We knew the restaurant was closed but the bar was supposed to be open in the evening and it never opened. There are no coffee makers in the room and no staff were around in the morning so guests gathered in the lobby waiting for coffee and to be able to check out. We ended up leaving our key on the desk as no one was there by 10am. It could be a beautiful place but it felt like a strange ghost town in both the evening and the morning.

I really wanted to love this hotel, but we felt every year of its 100 years of age. The floors were creaky, the walls were thin, the mattress may have been original and the bed was terribly squeaky. It didn’t feel as clean as it could be (previous guest left popcorn on the floor and hair in the tub drain that greeted us upon arrival). It was charming for some of these same reasons, but I wouldn’t sacrifice another night’s sleep here again.

The motel is old. Our room (228)was very small and had a funky odor. Toilet seat has issues with staying in place. Very annoying. Shower very difficult to operate. We are frequent travelers and went for a couple's night away. They have a place that could be lovely, but they are missing many things. On check out, drop the "people steal our keys" and have people sign the key waiver without the comment that makes you wonder if others are still walking around with your room key. The room was so cold (no thermostat) that we literally were freezing (avoid room 4 or bring a parka). No TV of telephone is fine, but no hangers in closet? Really? Food was good but service was very poor and people were loud and drunk outside our room until 11 PM in courtyard. We wanted to sleep in, but awoke to a fire alarm at 7:10 AM on Saturday. Apology, no way! They are invested in explaining why things are, not fixing them. This is my first negative review in years.

Like many travelers we arrived in the area after a long drive. Our plans were to attend a show in nearby Asheville. Beginning at the 4:00 check in time, a very loud Caribbean duo began playing right below our room on the hotel front porch and continued for over an hour. This made it impossible to take a nap before our evening plans. The only response from the front desk was a half hearted apology The room's air conditioner could not cool the room and the fan in the closet was caked in filth. We dined in the hotel and an ordered medium rare burger came super well done. They also managed to serve the wrong selected eggs at breakfast. All in all I cannot recommend this hotel.

The staff were lovely and very accommodating. The inner courtyard adds a great touch with an outdoor dining area. The room was clean, small. The whole building smells of old wood, but you get used to it. It is a bit like staying in a museum. Great location, walking distance to downtown. We would stay again.

Most of my discomfort was due to my sloppiness in not reading the description. I went on a solo trip where I didn't intend on leaving my room since I've been to Black Mountain several times and just needed to relax. There wasn't anyone at the check in for about 10 minutes. There wasn't an elevator which normally would have been fine, but I wasn't feeling great and 3 flights of stairs upon arrival without any assistance was rough. There wasn't a chair or a desk in the room, and there was only one nightstand which didn't offer a lot of space, not an adequate shelf in the bathroom for items. There wasn't a tv in the room which I didn't even realize because it's so common, I didn't think to look. There wasn't a refrigerator or a microwave, or coffee maker and to get ice, you have to ask for it downstairs. There isn't any way to adjust the temperature of the room which was very cold the first night, and there was a lot of hallway noise my last night. This would be a great place if you were there to explore the town, I honestly think I should have explored the site more thoroughly. The shower had a lot of water pressure which I enjoyed. I did get a burger from the restaurant downstairs and it was cooked really well.

A quaint hotel with a personal touch of service. Each room is uniquely decorated and has touches from the past. There needs to be air condition/heat controls in each room and more plugs. There are no televisions or refrigerators in the room.

This Hotel does not appear to know its identity. During our two night stay, we observed an extensive display of modern art (same artist) and “grunge” style music played by the only employee present. Our room was stark in design, the bed frame was noisy, the shower hot water faucet was installed backwards (leading us to believe there was no hot water), the AC unit thermostat was located down the hallway and controlled the climate for at least six rooms and there was little extra bedding (one pillow w/o case and no blanket). We know this review sounds harsh yet this Hotel is in need of renovation on all levels. One employee did inform us that a new group of owners have purchased the Hotel and there are plans for complete renovation and updating. We can only hope that is true and will look for it to happen as we will probably visit Black Mountain again in the future. On a positive note, though our room did not have a private coffee maker, there was fresh brewed in the lobby each morning.

I liked the location and proximity to the town’s restaurants and shops. The environment felt more like staying in a home than a hotel which made for a comfortable stay.

The floors on the front porch, lobby and hallways were dirty. They needed to be swept and the tile should have been mopped. The front entrance door and trim work had peeling paint. Our room was warm at first but the man at front desk came and opened the air vents which helped a lot. Our room was small and no TV, which we were aware of.

We enjoyed our stay. Theres no TV which didn't bother us, but may others. There were a few bugs in the room (a moth and some mosquito hawks) but that happens sometimes in older places. Mattress was pretty uncomfortable and hard though. Great location.

A comfortable relaxing place - beautiful historic hotel with very accommodating staff. Wish we had known the restaurant would be closed for the nights we booked, but otherwise would love to come back and stay!

The grounds needed to be mowed and patois needed to be blown off and hosed down. The gazebo and furniture in it needed cleaning. There was no TV, which wasn’t a huge deal but it would have been nice to know in advance. The bed was like sleeping on a rock. The room next door had two dogs that barked constantly. This property has a lot going for it, but needs some focus to get it to where it could be. Overall we enjoyed our stay, but it could have been better.

This property is old and nothing special. Many of the rooms don't have individual heat or air-conditioning controls. There's no TV in the room I was in. The bed was uncomfortable. And the website they advertise a bar in a restaurant, both of which were closed when I got there and are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, that was one of the principal reasons I chose that hotel, I feel like I was misled

The main street of Black mountain with all the shops of interest was a mere 3 minute walk from the front door of the inn. So not only was it beautiful and comfortable but it was very conveniently located.

The place is true to the early 20th century in look and feel. It was low-frills, no television, no hair dryer, sluggish AC/heat unit. Affordable, good for a night's stay, but the staff is really the best aspect of the place. They are stellar and friendly.
