Reviews
The hotel reviews indicate a positive experience overall, with guests appreciating the convenient location, friendly staff, and clean facilities. Many guests also enjoyed the game room and the walkable distance to Grant Park. However, some guests expressed dissatisfaction with the limited breakfast options.
- Convenient location
- Friendly staff
- Limited breakfast options
- Noisy due to proximity to train track and major street
- 5/5
I landed in at midnight and they had one bed left I was able to sleep which was great because I was very jet lagged. You can't beat the price for a last minute reservation in the loop.
- 5/5
I checked in early and was offered the option to wait for a bottom bunk. That was nice. There was always staff around, everything was clean, and the location is great in the Loop.
- 5/5
Excellent room.
- 5/5
Loved the amenities given and staff was so helpful with everything. Top bunk kinda sucked in the women’s dorm because it’s shaky but it is what it is lol.
- 5/5
It is a great hostel. The bedrooms are clean, shower and toilet area is always clean and stocked, and the game area has a lot to offer. The staff are really helpful and polite.
- 5/5
Clean room! Helpful staff. I didn’t use the laundry but the other amenities make it worth it. Super cool second floor! Gives you opportunity to meet other people.
- 5/5
It was a great location!
- 5/5
I was in a 4 bunk bed with women only. Check in was easy when i arrived at 1am. There was a shared living space, shared bathroom and shower within our bunk area, which were clean and tidied everyday. That was very nice and convenient. You were provided a sheet, blanket and towel. There were also bathrooms and showers outside the rooms shared with other guests. The bunk mattress were pretty soft, equipped with your own outlets and a lamp light. Bring your own lock for the locker (i got a keyed padlock sized 33 mm from amazon and it worked just fine. The dial padlock combo lock works too). The lockers were pretty big but I saw people put their carry on on the side. There was a free water refill station on the 2nd floor. Loved the café that was next to it. This area is near grant park and tons of bus stations. The only con was the subway noise running at night but thats it. I would stay here again!!
- 1/5
I had a private room with two beds, and the sheets from both beds had hair on them!!! I called the front desk to report this but it was too late for me to ask for anything so I slept in the bed with « only » one hair on it and used the extra blankets they put on the beds - which were the only things without hair on them. The next day I talked to the manager who told me they would give me a discount, without specifying the amount, and I accepted it thinking it would be a good enough one. Turns out it was only a $20 refund on my $230 night!!! I called the front desk again and was told I should have asked about the amount beforehand, as if it would have changed anything about it if I did. Never again!
- 4/5
This was my 1st experience staying at a hostel. The bed was comfortable. The 10 person room was very spacious. The other ladies staying in the room were friendly. The showers needed to be cleaned more frequently.
- 3/5
I honestly feel like because every day I love out for Pokémon go fest I was hoping to come back to a nice clean bed. I also feel like they should’ve had a mini fridge in the hotel room. I was also disappointed that they have an actual restaurant in their hotel because I was hoping for pre made pre breakfast. They also should have private bathrooms in the rooms. My first solo hotel experience kinda sucked.
- 5/5
I like the experience, but the guests are always loud
- 5/5
Was a very functional experience. Can’t beat the value in the middle of a big city like Chicago, will have to keep this brand in mind moving forward!
- 5/5
Nice

Great one day stay!
- 4/5
It's my 2nd time staying here and it's close to all the places I needed to get to. Its Safe and Convenient.
- 4/5
Spacious, clean and comfortably room, great staff with many amenities on property.
- 5/5
24 hr entry and the bed in its on area. FANTASTIC STAY. ILL BOOK AGAIN
- 5/5
Helpful and kind staff who went above and beyond!
- 4/5
A good place to stay for the money if you don't mind giving up a little privacy. Clean and comfortable. I had some questions for the staff, and they were very helpful. On a previous stay there was a continental breakfast, and there was none this time. Otherwise, an excellent stay!
- 5/5
The front desk personnel were amazing ! Professional, knowledgeable, courteous and friendly. My special request (I am 72 years old so I requested a lower bunk) was on file and provided. One of the other ladies in my room called about a ceiling tile that had fallen out and was lying on the floor. Maintenance was there within 30 minutes! It was a fantastic experience.
- 5/5
Great location, nice staff and clean rooms
- 5/5
Great location, clean room and great staff

Clean room, nice staff, great location
- 5/5
Cool theme and easy access to downtown, very affordable
- 5/5
This modern hostel is located in the heart of downtown’s Loop neighborhood and is stocked with everything you need to have an epic Chicago adventure. They have free Wi-Fi, lots of lounge space where you can hang out and meet fellow travelers, a fully stocked guest kitchen, and tons of local tips to help you explore the coolest neighborhoods in the city. When you leave HI Chicago, I promise you’ll love this city as much as I did!
- 4/5
2) The housekeeper came in while we were sleeping. There were 2 of us in the room at the time and were both asleep. She changed the sheets above my bunk and was very loud. Check in is not until 4PM and they should check before cleaning. 3) The sheet were cleaned with bleach which I agree whole heartedly. However I removed them because they were so strong with the smell that it made my eyes water. You may want to consider using a little less. People asked me if I would stay again. And I said yes I would. For the most part it was a pleasure to stay there and was convenient to the Congress hotel where the event took place.
- 4/5
Hi Chicago has comfortable beds, nice en-suite shower and toilet. Lots of extra toilets on 2nd floor but had to find them myself. Laundry also had difficulty, one floor could use coins, other floor couldn’t (change machine there though). Check in was a little rough, not much info given, But young male at reception very helpful, brought ID card up to room. Great location though for museums and lake activities!
- 5/5
What a beautiful hostel! We stayed in one of the private "bunk bed" rooms which shares a common sitting area & table with a few other rooms as well as a large double sink vanity & lockable shower/ toilet area. There are other restrooms and showers down the hall if the common one is occupied. The whole place felt very secure with several layers of locked areas requiring our key card. The floor with the ping pong/ pool tables/ lounge/ TV/ huge kitchen was very appreciated! Free coffee was delicious. Free walking tour at the zoo & conservatory was a blast.
- 4/5
Kitchen has to be clean and dishes washed
- 5/5
The room was not swept and mopped daily . We got one bath towel and a bath mat for a person, along with the bedsheet and blanket and pillows. But otherwise the room was very spacious, as compared to HI -NYC. The common play an TV area was big and a volunteer was there to guide us in planning our day trips. The kitchen and dining area were really roomy. I loved watching the elevated train run past the dining hall windows during breakfast. There was enough Tea and Coffee all the time. The volunteers organised a social meet in the evening with drinks, hot dogs, candies and games. It was fun to meet new folks. There were lots of walking tours and museum visits. I loved the SOXX Baseball game at the RateField stadium. It was my first, and just amazing. The volunteers helped us in getting a Ventra pass to use across all the public transport -bus, train and subway. The HOSTEL is very well located with tons of great shops on State Street. The tourist spots are between 4 and 12 minutes walk, i.e., Buckingham Fountain, Lakefront, The Bean , the Library, Cultural centre, Art Institute, etc. Just get a Ventra pass and tap it to travel anywhere anytime. I got a 7-day Ventra pass for just 20 $. Used it to travel to Navy Pier, Adler Planetarium, Field Museum, Shedd aquarium, Riverwalk, Ohio beach and North Shore beach, Lincoln park zoo
- 5/5
Staff was amazing recommending things to do and places to eat in the area. The property itself is right on the red line and you can get to the best places including Wrigley and White Sox stadiums.
- 5/5
It was a good stay conveniently located for what I was in town for with accessible amenities and everything I needed for the weekend and affordable pricing.
- 5/5
What an amazing stay the staff was very helpful. The place was clean. Everyone was really friendly and it’s so accessible to many landmarks and Taurus sites. There’s a whole bunch of food around and the only noise is the train.
- 5/5
Is a good place for stay in the vacations ❤️
- 5/5
really great experience, especially for the kitchen and recreation room.
- 4/5
Was good but they have the machines for the water and drinks that machine charge me twice but I didn't got water not my refund.
- 5/5
Affordable Location in city
- 4/5
The linens in the bedroom should be washed well including blankets and towels
- 4/5
Laundry machines should be cleaned weekly, quite nasty. If coins are not accepted, there should be signs posted to avoid loss.
- 3/5
Also, there is no dish washing liquid in the kitchen.
- 5/5
The kitchen has access to cooking, refrigerator and freezer to store food and drinks. Multiple dining tables and chairs to eat. Recreational space for billiards, game nights, pingpong, lounge to hang out with people.
- 5/5
I enjoyed the stay perfect for a night in chi!
- 5/5
Incredible place for the price and with it being centred in the heart of the loop it had beautiful views of the red line trains all while having great amenities for a low rate. Would definitely recommend.
- 5/5
Loved the location
- 4/5
For the price I can’t really complain about anything. Ur was a pleasant stay. Would buy again.
- 4/5
The best hostel I've stayed in; well stocked commercial kitchen, entire 2nd floor is common area, 2 pool tables, ping pong, 2 huge eating areas, rooms are huge with a huge sitting anter-room, located close to everything and public transportation, so walkable.
- 4/5
Everything was great but my room was near the train tracks and hearing it every 5 minutes was not good I am very light sleeper unfortunately, but overall nice place and clean and great beds!
- 4/5
Kitchen should be kept clean at all times.
- 2/5
There was no air conditioning in my room it was crazy hot. Just a floor fan that circulated the hot air.
- 5/5
Staff is great. Rooms and restrooms very clean. Amenities are great as well!
- 5/5
Why stay in a lonely one-room high-priced hotel when u can stay here! Make friends, have 24 hour access to huge well maintained common area: fully stocked commercial kitchen, pool tables, ping pong, the softest, cushiest chairs that you just fall into, be invited to daily events. Such a walkable area, so many eateries, bars, and shopping, steps from public transportation. I stayed here one night for convenience sake, I'm back for a second stay, have become a member, and booked in several other cities on my route. I feel so safe and welcome here. Please, come home to HI Chicago.
- 4/5
Nice clean and safe. Great location. Great value for money.
- 3/5
I was in town for a conference down the street and got incredibly lucky to be placed in the same room as someone also attending the conference. I think my experience at the hostel was better because of that. I did find two of the female hostel staff to be rude. I had messaged the property Tuesday evening asking if a room would be available for me Wednesday morning. I was informed that it was not guaranteed, so I decided to pay for Tuesday night to ensure a bed was ready for me after a long flight from LA. Apparently my card had bounced, yet I was not informed. When I brought it up to the woman who checked me in Wednesday morning at 9 AM, she was a bit cold and rude, saying I was a no show, insinuating that I should’ve known despite me expressing my experience. That definitely did not start my trip on the right foot. My roommate had a similar experience. Additionally, when the we were rushing out to the conference, we passed by the 2nd floor and got excited about grabbing popcorn. After waiting in line, the woman handing it out on the 2nd floor on Thursday evening refused to provide us with any until we wrote our names on name tags. That was understandable, but the tone did feel dismissive. The male staff during my checkout and baggage storage all day Saturday did redeem the overall hostel staff experience. Huge S/O!
- 5/5
I was on the train to Denver via Chicago and decided I really couldn’t pass up a chance to stay in Chicago and needed some good sleep. I stayed 2 nights in a solo. Best decision staying here. Staff was amazing and as a solo traveler they offered things to do like meet and greet and tours to the museum. Everyone was friendly and so much coffee and there was a huge common area on the second floor. There’s a L right there. It’s pretty but noisy at bedtime so bring ear plugs or a sound machine! I was able to walk to the Bean and all the cool downtown spots. I walked along the lakeshore and river and union station was so close. For food I got Joiibee, Yolk and Lou Malnati! I kept my leftover large pizza in the fridge of the solo room and ate it when at the room. Perfect stay!
- 5/5
Good
- 5/5
This is the second time I've stayed at this hostel and I would return again. The property is very close to the main attractions in the Loop area and is by far the most affordable accommodation in the area. I'm also very enamored with the layout of the building and how open and comfortable the common areas are. I especially love the view of the metro from the kitchen/eating area. The big windows in the rooms let in a lot of natural light during the day.
- 5/5
Only issues we had was it was always cold no way to control temp, everything else was a five star!!!
- 5/5
Everything was absolutely amazing at this hostel after bad experiences in the past I was very suspicious. Yet everywhere I went People were respectful both Guests and staff. There was tons of information activities to do. The kitchen was big with multiple places to cook food and to sit and eat also had a very nice refrigerator and dishwasher clean station another thing I really liked was there was multiple laundry to get caught up and shower/bathroom facilities really made my stay extra pleasant also very close walking distance to my train station while exploring the country on a train.
- 5/5
Love it here, my home away from home when in Chi! Kitchen is great and near all stops metra amtrack cta !
- 5/5
Check in was quick and efficient. The room was clean and comfortable. Scanning the key card to get into the hostel, use the elevators, and access the room made me feel safe. Location was great. Stayed with my son and the free pool tables were awesome. I took the free walking tour. Bill the guide was fun and informative. Would definitely stay again. Best U.S. hostel I have stayed at.
- 5/5
Got to meet some really cool people from all over the world. Great experience
- 5/5
Everything good except after 10 in the dorms you have to switch on the light to enter coz the guys on other beds already sleeping and for any activity before sleeping you have to come to break room.
- 5/5
Yes everything was great.
- 5/5
It was a clean and friendly accommodation, and it was very convenient to use.
- 5/5
It was nice not bad for the price, and it’s really cleaner than the other places you can find affordable. Also staff are nice and kitchen is awesome you can cook as if your home . Big area to sit down and do what you need to do and other floors have a room to sit and chill .
- 5/5
This place is made to keep you safe
- 4/5
Location: Awesome Activities: More cultural, sightseeing. Transportation super close. I'll be back. Family hostel: LOVED IT.
- 5/5
Honestly a great experience as a solo traveller. The beds were comfy and
- 5/5
Wonderful for solo traveling, great security. Very walkable and so close to all the Chicago attractions and public transportation.
- 5/5
Everything good
- 5/5
It was a very pleasant stay by any standard, but the community aspect was particularly refreshing. It was nice to see authentic and intentional settings for new interactions.
- 5/5
Quick summary is that the facilities are clean, comfortable, conveinient, and cost effective. However, I will elaborate further. I arrived late, or better to say earlier, and still was able to easily check in. The staff is very courteous. Mostly, I just wanted to sleep and shower and despite being in the shared space, both of those were easily accomplished and quite comforable. As far as I know, there is no breakfast offered. There is a coffee place connected, but I would prefer terrible burnt coffee if it were offered for free. Other hostels under this same brand offer complimentary breakfast in a shared space. The four bunk room that I used did have an adjoining shared sitting area and kitchen. I image that if I was staying longer I would have made good use of this. There was also provided a calendar of community activited hosted by the hostel. I would have liked to try these, but it did not work with me schedule on this perticular weekend. I think this would be a good place to stay at while learning about Chicago. The location is right in the center of everything. If I were planning my trip again, I would have booked a couple extra days just to relax, but that is my preference. You can successfully stay one night and get a good nights sleep and a shower and then immediately move on.
- 5/5
Yes
- 5/5
It was ok
- 4/5
Nice and well kept. Nice for the price and good staff . Also close to the train can hop on any line expect red don’t go to 95 but the other side fine close to nice museums and more
- 3/5
There was a kitchen?
- 5/5
Excellent location close to everything, no problems with cleanliness or anything. It did feel a bit no frills but the price was very reasonable so no complaints.
- 5/5
The room and most of the property was clean. The common bathroom/shower room needed a good cleaning and the in-room shower had almost no pressure. The kitchen was nicely equipped. Great location.
- 5/5
I love the kitchen
- 5/5
Everything was good
- 4/5
Good
- 5/5
I love the place. Kind staff and a lot of friends. I registered for the Chicago walk on Saturday and it was fun.
- 4/5
Overall pretty good
- 5/5
The room I stayed in was in good condition with clean blankets and towels, and a decent temperature that tended to be on the cold side. The worst thing was the women's bathroom had one of the two showers broken the whole time I was there and one of the two toilets on the floor out of order. There were 10 women in my room and at least 6 other rooms, all fully booked, so we had to share one toilet and one shower. Other than that, the facilities were OK. The kitchen was nice and there was storage for food on the shelves, fridge, and freezer. There was counter space, multiple sinks, and dishes. There was free tea/hot water and coffee, and sometimes a hot chocolate bar (I think they have that once a week). There used to be a free breakfast, but this has been discontinued as of 2026. The common areas had books and games free to use. WiFi was good and there was usually good data. There were plenty of plugs and places to work. A lot of travelers were remote-working, although I did not.
- 1/5
No
- 5/5
The best hostel I stayed. The stuff is very helpful and friendly. The room is clean and organized, bed is comfortable. I loved the second floor where you can find the common areas. It’s very spacious, comfortable and fun. The location is also great very close to the station and tourist points.
- 5/5
Great service, clean beds, and a nice, huge game/lounge room!
- 5/5
Amazin
- 5/5
Ok
- 5/5
Very good relative to the price and location
- 1/5
This location canceled my stay without my consent which is a pattern of discrimination and retaliation due to an injury i sustained at the hostel. This is due to a sharp small metal light right at head high on the wall. I filed an injury claim and their office denied responsibility. Then they message through Expedia and say that i shouldn't make a future reservation because they will manually cancel it . Stay clear of this place
- 5/5
Hostel’s location was perfect and I loved all of the activities - great for solo travelers, you’ll make plenty of friends!
- 5/5
Great hostel and right in the middle of the city

Recommend this place
- 5/5
Communal kitchens were spacious . Overall the entire facility was kept clean by staff, however some guests were not clean and did not keep communal spaces clean. I recommend this place only if you are comfortable sharing a space .
- 5/5
Very good experience!
- 4/5
Clean room, quiet environment. Disappointed that the continental breakfast was discontinued.
- 3/5
too cold ac did not work well. no drinking water.
- 5/5
The customer service went above and beyond
- 3/5
Dorm room smelt bad like sweat, the top bunk creaked with every small movement, the shower head in the bathroom was broken. It’s what you expect for $34 a night.
- 4/5
Decent for the night. Not very walkable downtown at night and very hot inside the rooms.
- 4/5
Good budget place to stay, not perfect but you get what you get for the price you pay. Conveniently located.
- 5/5
.
- 5/5
This isn't your regular youth hostel. The building is large, perfectly located, well appointed, with several room options. From gendered and mixed dorms, private rooms, ensuite dorms, a chef's kitchen with well organized refrigerators for storing your own supplies. Hotel services like fresh towels and extra attention for room service are possible. The building is fully wheelchair accessible and welcomes all. The staff is awesome. There are activities. Volunteers help put extra flavor to the space and the city.
- 5/5
it was a clean environment

- 4/5
Great spot to stay at and very accessible. The room was a bit cold though and i had to request an extra blanket
- 5/5
Affordable and well managed
- 5/5
Room and bed was clean. The amenities provided were above and beyond for even regular hotels, much less hostels. Staff were engaging, helpful, and super friendly. HI just gained a new loyal customer.
- 5/5
Overall very I had a very good experience, it was a short stay for a night before catching Amtrak Train from Chicago Union Station. It’s very close to the station. They also allowed late check-out on request. Would recommend it.

The staff was very friendly
- 5/5
Daily cleanup in commons area, bathrooms Excellent!. Individual rooms tidy and well kept.
- 3/5
I love the location and the affordable prize. But the room is so cold during the night, and I have a hard time get enough sleep just because of the temperature. Almost feel like I am sleeping on the street
- 3/5
This is my 3rd time staying in a hostel, and, sadly, the worst I've had so far. Some of the staff seemed like they had better things to do than to be there, and the attitude showed throughout the visit. My partner and I had a private room that shared a bathroom with 3 other private rooms, and housekeeping missed a day of cleaning the bathroom. Our mattress was stiff and uncomfortable with scratchy sheets. The common hostel kitchen was often unkempt (including one day when the water stopped working) with used dishes piling up, "cleaned" dishes of varying cleanliness, and, despite them asking us to label our food with check-in/check-out dates, there was food in the fridge WEEKS past labeled check-out dates. It would have been nice if the hostel had a dedicated common kitchen deep-cleaning day (as other hostels often do), but it's fairly clear that they don't and that kitchen sanitation isn't a priority. It was also really sad to see housekeeping staff taking the free food left behind by guests - seemed to me that they aren't paid well enough to afford their own food. I appreciate HI's overall mission, but I do think that a greater understanding of our world can include them taking better care of their guests too.
- 4/5
The bed was super duper comfy, we had the private room with a king bed. keep in mind, the bathrooms are separate it wasn't clear when booking. The staff was really nice, and it looks like they offer group activities. The restaurant connected to hostel was really good too.
- 4/5
Room was clean, staff was helpful and nice. Would stay again.
- 4/5
Clean room, good staff and really good location!

One of the best hostel I have ever stayed! New and clean facilities, all-function kitchen, big public resting/gaming/study/dinning area. Located in downtown just near the loop, very convenient transportation choices.
- 5/5
Clean room, friendly staff
- 5/5
Good amenities and close to transportation
- 4/5
Hostel was amazing, be smart with the parking. Download the app SpotHero and reserve parking before you go. Make sure you know directions ahead of time.
- 4/5
Very nice stay
- 5/5
Room are specious and clean.
- 4/5
Great for the price, they didn't have any bottom bunks left which kind of sucked cause I'm a heavier guy, and there was hairs all over the restroom area.
- 5/5
Room was great, good facilities, clean, comfy bed. what more does one need for a short trip to Chicago?
- 5/5
As a solo traveler, this was the perfect spot for me! Check in was super easy and I loved that the staff let me know they could hold my bags for me until my room was ready. It gave me the freedom to explore without being weighed down. The room itself was kept really clean. The shower facilities were very spacious too. I wish I would have taken more advantage of the spacious kitchen but that was truly the biggest perk for me. I loved having a spot to sit at with a cup of coffee while either planning my busy day or winding down for the night. Would absolutely recommend HI Chicago to any solo travelers and I’ll 100% be staying here again the next time I’m in Chicago.
- 5/5
I’ve stayed at this facility many times for the last 10 years. I always return. You can’t beat the prices the service in the condition of the facility.
- 5/5
Staff knows me upon arrival. Very welcoming.

The staff was exceptionally amazing.

- 5/5
Clean rooms
- 5/5
The work spaces were surprisingly accommodating and clean
- 5/5
Great location. Variety of offerings. Great experience all around for me!
- 5/5
One issue though is that there were only 1 bathroom and shower for every 8 persons. That ratio could have been better. And there was only one additional common bathroom and shower on each floor.
- 5/5
All Services perfect
- 4/5
For the price it is
- 5/5
Amazing experience!
- 3/5

- 5/5
The only downside was the insanely small cupboards for your things, you cannot lock your bag away anywhere. The second time I ended up in a room without privacy curtains either, which was a let down.
- 5/5
Excellent hostel—clean, friendly, well run. It IS a hostel, so even with a private room expect noise from other guests in the evening.
- 5/5
Very centrally located

Our stay at HI Chicago was excellent. We enjoyed the “elevated” hostel stay in our own room, but a shared living space. It was in the perfect location, everything is within walking distance. The only downside is finding parking, but we were lucky enough to find a spot relatively close. The train ran right by our room, it was like our own white noise to lull us to sleep. We’d recommend this place, we felt safe, comfortable, and it was a unique experience. We would recommend to others & come back!

Staff at desk was helpful. Cuban restaurant next door (Cafecito) was terrific. Very nice common room on second floor with amenities and street views. Hostel is right on the "El" so be prepared for some train noise. Walking distance to Auditorium Theater and Art Institute.

Really good experience staying here!!!
- 5/5
Great place to stay!
- 5/5
Sparsely furnished making it easier to keep clean and not feel crowded even in rooms with multiple occupants. Very secure location. Close to most train lines and many museums and tour spots.

72 years old - ladder to upper bunk was straight up and down (not at an angle) - while I am in good shape (weekly yoga, Nordic walking, swimming), this was beyond difficult- while a lower bunk remained unused for a long time, front desk could not supply a lower bunk option.
- 5/5
Price is great
- 5/5
The location was great, loved the food next door. The check in staff at night was amazing- so helpful and kind. Can’t say that for the day time staff. Clean and cute as hell. Love how safe it was.

Perfect for going to lollapalooza.

If you're on a budget you'll need to compromise. This is one of the cheapest places to stay in the city, and therefore you don't get 5 star quality. But it was great for my needs for a short stay, anything longer than a few days and you'll miss having a private bathroom and proper cleaning. It's a little tired but perfectly safe and if you're only sleeping here you'll be right in the middle of things without too much stress.

This is a wonderful place to stay. Everything is excellent.
- 5/5
Great!
- 5/5
Highly recommend for any solo travelers! Very clean, convenient location, and great amenities
- 5/5
Everything was great. Location, staff, cleanness etc. Only problem is the room was cold.
- 4/5
Good ad friendly
- 5/5
All good from bathroom to quietness. Could have used a less fluffy pillow. The constant trains seemed like ocean waves. It did not keep me up.
- 5/5
Easily the best hostel I have ever stayed at! No other has ever come this standard! Provide from towels, shampoos n body washes to a little bit of everything you can possibly need. If I am on another solo adventure in Chicago , this is the place ima stay at
- 5/5
Clean and convenient location
- 3/5
Generally nice with average amenities. My provided towels and sheets were a bit dirty and stained. The area directly surrounding the hostel was a bit sketchy but 2/3 blocks over was nice. Despite advertised, there was no complimentary breakfast which was disappointing but staff was nice. Does the job.

For the time we were staying we felt this was the perfect place for us
- 5/5
Simple - just what is needed, comfortable beds, clean, excellent restaurant at a very reasonable price, ethical practices and a super nice vibe. We will be back. This from a Senior Citizen.
- 5/5
I was surprised to see that most of the kitchen appliances had been disabled. Only the fridge was working. Also, both bathroom fawcetts were leaking. Otherwise, the rooms were quite clean.
- 5/5
The place is well located, close to all types of transportation and really close to main downtown so it’s pretty much walkable and has nice areas to spend time at with nice views
- 5/5
Felt safe. Good shower water pressure. Pool tables nice staff
- 4/5
Decent place for the price. Fairly typical for a hostel. Very noisy due to being adjacent to the L train. Ear plugs essential.
- 4/5
Hi Chicago is my to go hostel when I am at Chicago loop. The location is perfect, it is clean and affordable. I stayed in 4 beds women room without the bathroom and had a good night sleep. Cafecito is also convenient next to the hostel.
- 5/5
Best hostel in Chicago!
- 3/5
No breakfast provided as was described in amenities when booked. Policy notice was on property notifying of change (since booking) but no effort was made to tell me prior to arrival. A meal option not included as described is a significant change in terms
- 5/5
I love that everything was closed by like shops attractions bus and train. What i didnt like was when i ask for bath towels where limit just one i said can at least have 4 they said no it was me and my sister staying in at least 2 each other than that everything was great love it
- 5/5
Amazing location in The Loop. Next to everything you could want....food, shopping, transportation, activities, parks, etc. Hostel was a cool vibe ... eclectic with a diverse mixture of people from different countries and ages.
- 5/5
Great location and front desk people were very nice
- 5/5
awesome location. front desk was around all hours and the building felt safe. amenities were clean and there are lockers in shared rooms, just need to use your own locks. loved my stay.
- 5/5
We stay here every year for Lolla. It’s a fun community, we always make friends. Clean, close the train, venue, and always had something going on for the festival. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
The staff was friendly and it was easy to check in. They had a welcome event that I was able to go to and meet some people and have fun I enjoyed that. The room was clean the sink the bathroom shower the bed everything was nice and neat. The only problem I had was that the ladder going up to the top bunk was a little difficult to navigate. It was horizontal and bolted to the bed frame so it made going up and down a little scary. Overall I had a great experience and I will be more than happy to book with this hotel again.
- 5/5
The pillows were like rocks locations. Amazing staff is great.
- 5/5
This is by far the best hostel I've ever stayed at! Stayed here for Lolla and it was a quick 5min walk, just one block over. Easy access to anywhere in the loop, great transportation, felt very safe as a solo female traveler. Loved it!
- 5/5
I love the lockers and organized and clean they were I just didn’t like getting top bunk but other than that… even the bed was very comfortable
- 5/5
Good area, right next to Cafecito which was a nice place to grab a bite to eat. Stayed here for Lollapalooza and thought it was just what we needed.
- 5/5
Staff was above and beyond
- 5/5
It was overall good, you need a lock and earplugs
- 5/5
I absolutely enjoyed my two nights at the HI Chicago hostel for Lollapalooza. As a solo traveler, the common areas and events held by staff were a great way to meet new people from all over the country and the world, as well as have some fun. Whether you’re traveling solo or not, I’d recommend staying here. Even though I had an obnoxious roommate, the bed was comfortable and the location is great being in the loop , a lot of great food options nearby.
- 5/5
Bed was great, first time seeing the new snack area in the lobby. Got some goodies when everything was closed. Staff are always great and nice. I jad another great time. I miss the breakfast though!
- 5/5
amazing
- 4/5
No more complimentary breakfast :-( Staff is always friendly but was smoking outside of the hotel. Always clean, cafeteria lounge area was up and lit at 2am, surprisingly. The roomies are always friendly.

The thermostat was in another room and we couldn’t control it , the forks were on the 2nd floor, it was very cold and I had to get 2 extra blankets to take to the room, there were no coffee or tea or hot chocolate to keep warm. There was no breakfast. The elevator was so slow and people kept pushing the button so I was on the elevator for a long time. The microwave and fridge and sink were the three things that worked in the kitchen.
- 5/5
Really comfortable clean stay
- 5/5
Ascwith all places be prepared secure your belongings....bring a lock. It was a great time and a one nighter for me to test the waters. I will return in a couple weeks on my way back through and stay multiple nights.. We'll see how that goes.
- 3/5
Not for me.
- 5/5
Everything was absolutely amazing when staying on this property! This was my second time staying at a hostel ever and it was so nice! The common area was super cute and had lots of fun stuff to do and help connect with other people there! Free coffee and tea and a really nice kitchen area as well! I also liked that they had the option to join fun activities and tours around Chicago, would’ve definitely done one if I had more time! Rooms were super clean, well maintained, and staff was amazing!
- 5/5
Overall, I was happy with my stay at HI Chicago Hostel. The location was excellent, close to public transportation and major attractions. The staff were friendly and helpful whenever I needed assistance. My room was clean and comfortable, and I appreciated the secure environment. The shared kitchen and lounge areas made it easy to relax after long days. Definitely good value for money. I’d recommend it to other travelers.”
- 5/5
Great hostel
- 5/5
This was a great stay. The staff were nice and everything was very clean. The only issue I had was the person staying next to me was non stop talking on her phone throughout the day and night for multiple days in a row. I could hear everything through the walls. That was obviously not the fault of the hostel I just wanted to mention that noise travels easily through the walls here.
- 5/5
Great stay at HI Hostel! The location is unbeatable — right in the heart of the city, close to everything. Spacious, clean, with good bathrooms and a nice atmosphere. You meet cool people and get great value for the price. Would definitely stay again! This was my fourth time here… and counting.
- 5/5
LovI d my stay and will definitely be staying here again in the future. If you live walking everything is about 10-45min walking distance from the hostel and it was worth the stay for the location and price
- 4/5
First time at a hostel and i was impressed. We had a private room, my only complaint was we couldnt control our tv. Our only hope was to use the 3 buttons on the bottom and watch whatever channel that live tv was on. Front desk gave us a remote but that didnt help. Other than that, we truly enjoyed our stay. I'm already looking into staying at another hostel somewhere in the US.
- 4/5
There is no free breakfast anymore though.
- 5/5
Good location, friendly staffs and all clean
- 5/5
A really welcoming place. All the amenities are there, works perfectly. People are warm. Feels like home.

- 5/5
Great place to be in
- 5/5
Nice spot to take a quick rest and shower. They stored bags for a few even after check out to wander the city. Def would stay again!
- 5/5
This was a very convenient option for my most recent work trip.I have never stayed at a Hostel before and was very pleased to see how well kept the property is. Roommates were very nice and understanding because I had an early morning flight so didn't want to disturb anyone's sleep. Felt very secure with entry and access processes set in place as well.
- 4/5
I had a wonderful time in Chicago. The Hostel was a great inexpensive option. The challenge was other residents not respecting the community rules and a few staff people not doing their jobs in the kitchen area. I made coffee numerous times. I cleaned the kitchen numerous times. A few times it was disgusting!
- 5/5
Clean, quiet, great location, and front desk staff is really nice!
- 5/5
Very accommodating. And perfect.

It was a nice place to keep your stuff at while you out all day, my partner and I enjoyed it.
- 1/5
Rude staff, unclean property and looks very shady
- 2/5
Pillows were hard to rock in kitchen area provided was a joke. Location was amazing, but that was it.
- 5/5
The location of the hostel is perfect — in the Loop, surrounded by subway stations and stores. I had my own room (with shared bathroom) which was clean, quiet and comfortable. Perfect for a solo trip.
- 4/5
miss the complimentary breakfast
- 5/5
Very cean , spacious , friendly staff and my room of 8 ladies was very quiet ( as well as the rest of this poshtel. Great location for venues at Millenium Park , lots of restaurants and bars in the neighbourhood
- 5/5
It was perfect
- 5/5
I like a lot. Recommend.
- 5/5
24 hours open check-in, private lockers, clean bathroom, great common area, lots of activities to partake in
- 5/5
Let me know if you want to personalize it with your name, a specific staff member’s name, or details about an activity you enjoyed!
- 5/5
The staff were friendly, check in was quick and easy. Really enjoyed the property!
- 3/5
I upgraded from a 2 star to a 3 star as the staff were super friendly this go around. I won't give it higher as I wrote plenty of time in advance as asked for a bottom buck as I'm 63 and was told that 'it's first come first serve". I would pay for a private room, so I don't have to worry about that issue, but a private room costs just as much and, in some cases, more than staying in a hotel like the Congress Inn.
- 2/5
A bit to be desired for the price
- 3/5
Friendly staff, safe space
- 5/5
Great
- 4/5
I won’t be too harsh on this property, it could just be for my last minute booking to stay somewhere close to the venue. It was affordable especially being so last minute, the room and bathrooms were clean. Some staff members were nice a few others not so much. I’m a light sleeper so late at night you could hear every time someone closed their door especially if they let it slam behind them. Overall I give it a 3.5 out of 5 especially if you’re in a travel crunch and only need to sleep overnight before driving another 8-10 hours.
- 4/5
The front desk staff were extraordinary when I checked in, utterly rummy from 2.5 days on the train.
- 5/5
Friendly, easy check in/out, and nice area close to public transportation.
