The Golden Arm
About The Golden Arm
Designed for travelers who'd rather spend the evening exploring Chicago than watching hotel cable. No TVs, no phones, no front-desk line to wait in. A shared kitchen for a morning coffee. A garden for a quiet hour. That's it — and that's the point. We are located in a beautiful, culturally rich community in a historic 4 flat with stairs and no elevators. If you love the Marriott, you’re going to hate us. If you gravitate to unique, style, personality and being in the center of it all, you are our people. The Golden Arm is within close proximity to all that Chicago has to offer. Accessible via car, train, bus or chopper (just kidding). Life is short. Love. Life. Leave. And come back and see us again

Reviews
The hotel has a great location and is generally clean and comfortable, with a unique and relaxing atmosphere. However, there are some issues with the facilities and services provided, such as steep stairs, lack of TV, and poor communication with staff.
- Great location
- Clean and comfortable rooms
- Steep stairs
- Lack of TV and other amenities
- 2/5
Me and my girlfriend stayed here for two nights. Overall, I think that we enjoyed our stay, but there were a few things that peeved us. The biggest thing was that though hot water just wouldn’t turn off no matter what we tried. The water was scolding hot so we were unable to use the shower. Also, the customer service was a little poor with no one being on site. Help was hard to come by if they fix the water issue and maybe had a bit more responsiveness I would easily rate them four stars, but until these issues are fixed, we will not be returning.
- 5/5
Very unique room, high ceilings, random foot massager that was nice.
- 5/5
Comfortable bed, nice clean bathroom, perfect location, and easy to find. We would definitely book again. FYI: One of the handles on the shower was broken and hanging.
- 5/5
Clean room great location
- 4/5
We had a nice, spacious room in a great location of Wicker Park. There were tons of restaurants and shops right outside our door. We had a 3rd floor unit in this walk-up "hotel." My only slightly negative comment is that the mattress was a little soft/sunken in the middle.
- 4/5
Great location for access to Wicker Park neighborhood. Minor issues, shower door broken, dirty entry. Be prepared for zero amenities and no closet but everything you need is accessible nearby. Good room and reasonably quiet so if all you need is a place to sleep this is perfect.
- 3/5
Just a Chic Clean and quiet room. Super simple directions to enter. No amenities. Street parking , No t.v. , Very near restaurants and bars.
- 5/5
Great location - simple clean comfortable bed to sleep in.
- 3/5
Very spacious room, very clean. Shower head was broken
- 1/5
Overall unprofessional, and lacking in many things a hotel needs. Nice room but had leaking damage, we were blamed saying the windows were open, then downgraded. Before checking out the new room we were completely locked out of our old room with no assistance for multiple hours. During this time the staff on the text service was highly unprofessional and hard to reach. After the event our stay was fine, and we asked for a late check out for compensation, when the text service again was overall unpleasant and rude.
- 5/5
Room was clean, great view of city street. John was responsive and easy to reach. Easy keypad access through the doors. Would love to stay again!
- 5/5
Clean room, comfy bed and housekeeping staff was excellent!
- 4/5
No place to check in early and drop bags, 4 flights of angled stairs with varying rails, very comfortable bed, ceiling fan, wall electric fireplace, small kitchen on 3rd floor with ice machine. No TV which is great because I only really sleep when im downtown, great city view, expected sirens occasionally. Overall great location, reasonable price, but tough amount of stairs.
- 5/5
Room was clean and the location is great. Parking in the side street was easy
- 5/5
Clean comfy room and super fast/easy/smooth keypad check in
- 2/5
Normally absolutely love staying here, the location is perfect and I prefer spending money towards small owned businesses but the room this time was not cleaned; lack of hot water, there was an excessive amount of hair in the shower, stains and food crumbs on the carpet. It was far too late for me to go elsewhere, so I asked to get some form of refund back but didn’t hear anything yet.
- 3/5
We were on the top floor & we are 75 years old! Also no coffee in the room or tv. WiFi was good though.
- 5/5
Great location, comfortable room with view of downtown Chicago.
- 5/5
Entrance and carpet up to rooms could be updated. Very central to everything, restaurants and bars right outside your door. I would stay here again and highly recommend
- 5/5
Easy access
- 3/5
It’s fairly dirty. Carpet on the entry is bad. Mold in the shower. If you just want a place to sleep, its ok.
- 5/5
Quiet, comfortable getaway in the city.
- 1/5
Basically there is no service in the hotel, the room is clean, but the stair to the room so dirty. Not worth for you paid such high price to stay there.
- 5/5
Great little place, really enjoyed my stay.
- 5/5
Room was clean and had a great view.
- 4/5
Great location. Would stay again.
- 4/5
The location and price were great. The room was big for a city hotel and clean. This is a walk-up and the steps are very very steep. The water pressure in the shower was poor and the temperature was scalding hot. There is no staff so we would have had to call or text.
- 5/5
No TV and no parking was a bummer. As long as you have your own laptop w/ Netflix or Amazon Prime & you are Ubering/Lyfting everywhere - it's perfect. The bed was SO COMFORTABLE!
- 5/5
Good
- 5/5
Gorgeous room, great location. Older building with charm. Had a lovely stay.
- 2/5
I understand is not something rooms have but pictures online show a tv in a room and the room we were in has the tv hook up. The towels were stained, I was told we would be getting a new set asap along with a room refresh. Got the towels 2 hours later, which were also stained and the room refresh didn’t happen. There is no daily housekeeping. The location is great.
- 5/5
This made for a very lovely visit to Chicago. Comfortable, quiet room perfectly located to tons of dining options.
- 5/5
We can’t wait to go back again. Clean, comfortable room in a super fun/clean neighborhood!
- 5/5
Great location, effortless check in. Very nice room.
- 5/5
Great room! Great view of the skyline from my balcony. A little unique but I enjoyed it.
- 4/5
The climb up the stairs with no elevator and heavy luggage was not fun. And I think a tv and a few more guest amenities in the room would improve the accommodations. Area around the room is very nice. Lots of cute shops and delicious restaurants
- 5/5
Cute hotel and it’s walking distance to all the vintage clothing stores. :)
- 5/5
Super easy to find, super easy to check in, great walk to Salt Shed.
- 5/5
The room was just as advertised, very comfortable abd cozy.
- 2/5
Our code to our room was deactivated late at night and my guest couldn’t get access to her diabetic meds for 2 hours. It stated there was a 24/7 concierge line, but that line would get sent to voicemail repeatedly. After two hours of this, i finally had to search up “emergency contact” for the then room and found someone’s personal number and count get the code switched. This should have never been a problem. Definitely wouldn’t stay here.
- 5/5
It was a nice area and the room was beautifully decorated. Much to my disappointment, there wasn’t a TV, coffee, or ice machine. So, it was lacking in a few amenities that would have made the price worth it.
- 3/5
The room is nice and clean. The room didn’t have a tv so that was odd. I like having noise to fall asleep.
- 5/5
Great location, tons of restaurants to choose from within walking distance. Room was very clean, would stay again
- 5/5
Lovely stay; room was perfect. Spacious, clean, elegant. Beautiful backyard courtyard with a waterfall fountain gave me a secluded space to relax outside in a very busy neighborhood. The neighborhood was awesome too, so much to see, eat and do. I also got the best massage of my life from the ruby room spa.
- 3/5
It was alright.
- 4/5
comfortable bed, clean space, nice bathroom; very steep steps to climb to the third floor (be aware if you have heavy luggage); no tv or other amenities in the room (much more like a guest room and less like a hotel). great location, but not much else going for it.
- 5/5
Nice room in a lively spot. Parking was a little challenging, but we found a spot. It was a great stay!
- 4/5
Somewhat odd shared kitchen setup between the rooms. The room was spacious and clean, shower water pressure left something to be desired.
- 4/5
This place is very cute. Our room looked right out on Division which I loved. There is no TV or fridge in the room. There is a little community room in the hallway that has a fridge and microwave. The price was very reasonable for the area. It was only about a 15 minute walk to he Salt Shed. There are a ton of good restaurants right outside. I would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
It’s a cozy room in the center of a safe area in Chicago. It’s really pretty and a lot to do right when you step out of the building. Highly recommend!!
- 5/5
Easy hands off checkin and checkout but with staff the is prompt and responsive when needed
- 5/5
Cute little place in a great location. Entry and exit was a breeze. Very nice room and very very convenient.
- 3/5
This place was cute, above the city streets on Division. This room was on the fourth floor, so I was not prepared to lug my heavy luggage up the whining staircase, so just be prepared. Broken shower nob, no wifi..but Cute place.
- 3/5
The shower had very little water pressure and could turn off the bathroom light. Clean? Yes. Be prepared for lots of steps as there no elevator to the 3rd floor.
- 5/5
Great space in a very convenient location. Lots of restaurants in the area and easily walkable to The Salt Shed. Stairs ARE narrow and steep but didn’t bother us.
- 5/5
First time in Chicago what a cool place to stay...thanks Ruby Room
- 4/5
I enjoyed my stay. The neighborhood was safe. My event was within walking distance. The room was nicely decorated.
- 5/5
Nice spacious rooms and I love that I can check in without having to talk to anyone. We only stayed one night but it was a great experience.
- 3/5
Would not go back.
- 5/5
I appreciated all the text messages that helped make the check in process easy. It was a different experience not to have on site staff at check in time, but it all worked out fine.
- 5/5
Nice low contact space in great lication
- 4/5
I really enjoyed staying at this property. The room was very lovely and even without a front desk their customer service is very prompt and helpful.
- 5/5
Quaint room located in the Wicker Park. Great way to experience the neighborhood. Walking distance to the Salt Shed which worked great for us. Steep staircase up to room but I felt they were open about this. Perfect for our weekend visit!
- 4/5
The room was beautiful, clean and a good size!! I was on the 4th floor and the stairs were a little steep and narrow.
- 5/5
Lovely room, very affordable and comfortable
- 4/5
Very easy to access and within walking distance of everything we needed for our stay.
- 5/5
Wicker Park is a good location. Many dining opportunities within walking distance and easily accessed to other areas of downtown vua public transportation or Uber.
- 5/5
Amazing and clean room!
- 4/5
The staff was very nice and the area around the property was very fun and lively. The most tedious part of the inn were the stairs so be prepared to be very tired once reaching your floor.
- 3/5
No TV
- 4/5
Loved the room and eventually found the entrance, only complaint would be the water temperature was very inconsistent when it came to the shower. Scorching hot to freezing cold in the span of a minute. Might’ve just came at a bad time. Also there was no to-go cups left when we went to the kitchen to get coffee. Other than that very cute, clean, and safe place to stay. Wasn’t too hard to find parking in the side streets and the safety of my car didn’t feel threatened. Easy walk to nice restaurants and the metro.
- 1/5
I feel I’d be doing other travelers a disservice by not mentioning the Ruby Room was nothing like the photos. After climbing four very steep floors of stairs with all of our luggage we were met with a room that was lack luster to say the least. The ceiling had exposed wires where the smoke detectors were meant to be, the lock box on the door was broken exposing all of the batteries, the carpets were stained and the wall paint was chipped…. The shower didn’t drain. The desk was dirty and had someone’s smeared makeup on it.. the water pitcher had water in it? Who knows if it was fresh and supposed to be for us or just left over? A gross mystery. The window sills were as if they hadn’t been dusted in months and the room was maybe 50 degrees tops when we got there. I mentioned right away to the manager? that the room was dirty and did not meet our expectations to which they made 0 effort to make things better. Also the only way to contact anyone is via text so if you have any real issues (which we did) beware because you cannot reach anyone to help you. After we left our room and ventured out for lunch and shopping. When we returned to the ruby room we were able to get into the building but our code did not work on the floor we were on. We were stuck in the hallway for 15 minutes calling and texting with no response.. eventually another guest let us in. The managers attempt at customer service was to suggest I wasn’t competent, he wasn’t helpful or considerate. Do not stay here.
- 5/5
Communication with John was very simple and straightforward. That was a relief since there really isn't a "lobby" or attendant to check you in. The location couldn't have been better and the room was cozy, clean and extremely comfortable. We will be back.
- 5/5
Very convenient for Wicker Park visit.
- 5/5
Location and character
- 4/5
Good location. Lots of dining options
- 5/5
This was my 4th stay at Ruby room. Clean spacious rooms with a nice bathroom. Great neighborhood. Note that there is no reception desk, and that all of the arrangements including check-in are done by text and email. However it’s very easy as you only need a code for the keypads on the doors and no physical keys. Communication was good and they are responsive to questions by text.
- 4/5
Great location, and the space was mostly nice. Offsite staff didn’t get back to me about a few questions. Room had some scuff marks and other little issues.
- 3/5
Necesita opciones para parqueo de vehículos
- 5/5
Great location and perfect small room exactly what I needed for a last minute booking. Very convenient.
- 4/5
Nice place, room was clean and well decorated, bed was cozy and the bathroom was spacious. There was no tv, but that was kind of nice. Only issue is that there are a lot of steep stairs to get to the top floor.
- 4/5

- 4/5
The remote concierge was communicative throughout our stay, and the room was clean and charming. The room smelled slightly like feet (maybe the carpet?) but otherwise was masked by deodorizers. All in all, felt like a good deal for us.
- 4/5
Great value if you plan to walk the city.
- 2/5
The room had a pleasant smell and atmosphere upon arrival. The water kept alternating from boiling hot to freezing cold multiple times during a shower. There was a strange stain on the carpet next to the bed that looked like old blood or wine. Door was drafty and there was a visible crack between the door and the frame.
- 5/5
Nice place and very spacious room
- 4/5
Overall a very cute room, centrally located. Room could use some TLC, disappointed that there was no TV
- 5/5
Perfect location. Just an awesome experience! Very different from a typical hotel experience, in a great way!
- 4/5
Very nice. Safe, great location. Lovely outdoor space. A coffee pot in the room would have been nice.
- 5/5
It was close to where my daughter lives. Very nice area.
- 4/5
Nice, basic place. It was hot though and we couldn’t figure out if there was air conditioning or how to make it work. Stairs were a little tricky, but we knew that going in so was good!
- 5/5
It was perfect, the room was nice it was located close to shopping and restaurants and walkable to the Salt Shed venue.
- 5/5
Really relaxing eclectic environment and location. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
- 5/5
Friendly neighborhood
- 5/5
Love this place! Great location, great view of the city on the top floor.
- 3/5
place was great other then there was not a way to turn over head lights off in 4d
- 4/5
The shower door was off of the roller hinges. Serious risk to fall and break. Top floor room had a nice view of downtown. Very serious stairs. Don’t do this place if steep stairs are an issue.
- 5/5
Clean and very comfortable! Very walkable to our concert venue and a bunch of restaurants/pretty neighborhoods to walk around! Felt very safe and secluded. Parking was available for a fee and it was a great parking spot, very close to the stay! Would stay here again.
- 5/5
Very comfortable and great price!
- 4/5
Rooms were nice but no TV was a bit of a surprise. Stairs to rooms were steep! and a bit scary if I'm being honest. Communication was a bit strained between myself and the hotel.
- 3/5
The property was in a decent location and was clean and nice enough. Overall, it wasn’t a bad stay, but I’ve given it a 3/5 because there was some sort of fragrance or air freshener that was used and was so strong it gave me a headache and caused my eyes to burn. I had to open a window (and it’s currently winter). Otherwise, the pillows on the bed were fabulous.
- 4/5
I enjoyed the simplicity of the rooms and check-in process.
- 2/5
This is an inn without staff on site. There are two major issues: the shower water was boiling hot! The water was so hot that I couldn't shower without getting burned. The second issue is the alarm went off throughout the nights, so obviously, I couldn't get one good night's sleep. I was there for business, so basically, I just needed a place to shower and sleep. This inn failed on both. Overall, I will not recommend it to anyone.
- 5/5
This kind of takes contract free interaction to a whole new level. I was texted the door code and room number and never interacted with a single person. I prefer this method but understand it may not be for everyone. The property also has a few flights of stairs to get to your room, not sure what the accessibility options are but if someone needs those they should definitely confirm what they are before booking.
- 4/5
Neutral: It's an air B&B no frills room (e.g.: no TV), no visible on-site staff, and texts take a bit to respond to, but within 20 minutes (just feels longer when you are in the rain). A few of the plug ins blinked lights which was startling in the dark. No closet, but did include coat hooks and a few hangers. Cons: The stairs are those small twisty antique stairs from period dramas that turn tightly into the landing - difficult to navigate and practically impossible to do so if you are older and carrying significant luggage. The shower door didn't particularly want to slide open.
- 1/5
There is no one on premises to speak with, all communications are AI generated. When we arrived to the building, our room was still dirty upon check in: dirty towels on bathroom floor, bedsheets we're still dirty from the last occupant... ok, we understand that happens. When we text the number to see what was going on we received AI responses and waited in the dirty for room for 30 minutes with no actions from the owner. It took us becoming frustrated and asking "what the hell is going on?" to finally receive a phone call from the owner, Simon. In an effort to displace blame, Simon yelled at us, said that we booked too late in the day, no one is around to clean the room, and said "I want you to leave" falsely claiming we went from "0 to 100" upon receiving his phone call, saying that we had raised our voices and swore at him. These accusations were not only false but an obvious effort to not take responsibility for the room not being ready at 6:30 pm when the previous guests check out was at 11:00 am. He told us we booked to late in the day (3pm) but 3hrs before we checked in, the room still wasn't clean. We were treated terribly... were told we would be refunded, but have received nothing yet.
- 5/5
Room had everything I would expect from a normal hotel. Spacious bed room and a well furnished room overall. Bed was comfortable. A/C did its thing. Even turned on the heat in the morning because temperatures dip to 50’s this time of year and that worked well too. Plenty of lighting and outlets. Bathroom sink was a bit more modern than I’d like leaning toward being slightly less functional and more design oriented. But can’t blame them for trying to be fashionable. Shower was warm with good water pressure too. Basically didn’t really notice that it was an Air B&B except for the missing staff but whatever help I needed I was able to get within minutes by texting their number. Overall a great first experience with an Air B&B.
- 2/5
The room was hard to find, even with text/email instructions. My biggest disappointment was in the comfort of the mattress and the microfiber/polyester sheets on the bed, they always make me so sweaty no matter the room temperature. The location was perfect for my needs, and check in was fast and smooth once I found the correct entry.
- 3/5
Somewhat of a disaster in room 3D from the start. Room was not ready until 3:45 and check in was 3pm. We had a tight schedule that was affected by this. Had to vacate to allow housekeeping more time. Room was small, stairs were tricky to navigate (narrow/steep)with bags. Headboard was loose, chair had a busted leg that was rigged to look intact. Major ant infestation in front corner of room and the loudest bathroom fan I’ve ever heard. The communal kitchen was the absolute worst. Just filthy and clearly overlooked by housekeeping.
- 5/5
Very comfortable bed. Good location.
- 5/5
Quick walk to the Blue Line and a wide variety of dinning options in the area. Room was clean and nicely decorated. (Minor issue, but it would be nice to have a variety of pillows types. Four very lite feather pillows were provided but they don’t provide much head support.)
- 5/5
Easy contactless check in process, and nice room for a night out in the city. Good for when you have plans all night and just need a place to stay - there is no TV.
- 5/5
It made us feel like we were part of the neighborhood because of how it looked more of an apartment than a hotel. The decore was nice too.
- 4/5
Loved Ruby Room. The location is A . The property is well-maintained and quiet for being so central. The staff at the spa are also really nice. Communication was A . Thanks! Will stay here again.
- 1/5
Was not given the code to get in.Had to find another hotel!
- 3/5
The entry was difficult to find. It was raining and had to wade through 4” of water to get in shop where girls were super helpful to get me inside. Stairs were steep and a challenge with luggage. Bathroom had shampoo or other gooey liquid on floor.
- 5/5
Well marked and easy to find. The stairs could be a bit of a challenge for those with mobility issues. Fantastic location.
- 5/5
Return traveler and Ruby Room never disappoints. Excellent communication and instruction. 👏
- 5/5
I appreciated how clean my room was, and the quietness of the area. Would definitely stay here again !
- 5/5
I loved it here!! Only thing I would say is please add some sortve coffee maker ork cup thing to the kitchen
- 4/5
Otherwise, I loved the access to the courtyard and the door that opened to the back! Also the staff were very attentive
- 3/5
Get something answered in a hurry like , it’s midnight freezing outside and the front door keypad is not working and excepting my pin and you message Expedia and leave multiple messages for the owner and get nothing , then I’ve had a gut full of quirky. Owners if you own the property then own all the annoying customers and their questions 24 /7 . I’m in the service industry and the customer comes first. Own it then Own it Ps. Let us know the password for the free wifi which must be hidden somewhere in the room and a big fat sign that says free kitchen around the corner without having to find no small print in the hotel details
- 3/5
Also, the toilet clogged and though support was super helpful and responsive, there was no plunger or housekeeping on site. Overall, I appreciated the location and room for the price.
- 5/5
The room was very nice and not your run of the mill hotel/hostel. I would definitely stay here again!
- 4/5
Once I found my room, it was fine. Very comfortable bed and covered the basics. Entry hard to find, and once inside the staircase was very dirty. Not a good first impression.
- 3/5
At 5p, I checked into the booked room. It was not cleaned and although I appreciate the prompt service of moving me to a smaller, vacant room it was inconvenient.
- 5/5
The hotel was really nice. Much nicer than I expected for the price. The staff was very friendly. I will definitely stay there again
