Reviews
The hotel is generally praised for its cleanliness, comfortable rooms, friendly and professional staff, and great location. However, there are some recurring complaints about the hardness of the beds, issues with the showers, and occasional problems with cleanliness in some rooms.

Clean, comfortable and friendly staff. This is a great central location with convenient parking. Will definitely stay here again when we’re in town. Nothing comes to mind

Hotel was in excellent condition. Have stayed there 4-5 times and it is always consistent. Staff very helpful.

Very good
- 4/5
Everything was great, except for the cleanliness of my room - excessive dust on the outlets and mildew in the shower.
- 2/5
Room was clean. During my stay, a maintenance worker entered my room early in the morning, waking me up unexpectedly. After leaving, he attempted to enter again while I was in the shower. This experience was extremely unsettling, as it disrupted my rest and made me feel unsafe due to the lack of privacy. When I approached the front desk prior to checkout to speak with a manager, the desk clerk dismissed me by gesturing for me to wait while she remained on a personal cell phone call. I waited in the lobby to address the issue, but was later told he was back and I needed to locate the manager myself. When I found him, he was on a call and motioned for me to go away. Eventually, the manager approached me and offered an apology; however, his response minimized the seriousness of the situation. I did not feel that he fully understood or acknowledged the significant concern regarding my privacy and personal safety.

Location, nice lobby and bar area AC did not work; it was 74 degrees in the room and we were given a box fan as a solution. After 3 hours and multiple visits from maintenance, was finally offered a new room. Breakfast was expensive and mediocre at best. :( Not impressed.
- 2/5
Too expensive The dinner menu was good

Very clean and very convenient to campus.

Very nice newer looking property. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was very good. Breakfast average.

Nice hotel, very busy when we arrived.so elevators a bit slow. Overall perfect location to walk through JMU and quick stay.
- 5/5
We enjoyed the pool, fitness room, bar, restaurant, and room. Everything was great. Mitch was a super bartender; Willa served our food. I even used the laundry. We stop here whenever we journey on route 81.
- 4/5
The room was very clean with comfy beds and lots of space. We used both the gym and the pool! We also thought the staff were friendly and helpful. The tub was clogged and would fill up a lot with water when we took showers.

The best thing about this hotel is the location. It is basically on the JMU campus, so you are a few minutes’ walk from anything on campus. You can also walk to downtown. The property is nicely decorated, there are two restaurants and a bar on the premises (I did not try any, but nice to have the option). There is a small, free-for-guests laundry facility and a small fitness room. The staff is friendly and helpful and addressed any questions I brought to them. There are staff at the desk 24/7. There is a parking garage around the corner from the hotel and covered access from the garage to the hotel. The access and garage are very well lit at night. Room cleaning is only provided if requested; it is not a standard. Not sure if this is cost cutting from the property or due to difficulty in finding and keeping employees. I stayed here twice in May 2026. For this stay, the listing on booking.com listed a hotel safe, but the room did not have a safe. The photos on the booking listing indicated that the room would have a bathtub, but it had only a shower. I did not address either of these issues (safe & bathtub) with the hotel staff.
- 4/5
Hotel staff and amenities were outstanding. Access to good and services all around are great asset to hoteliers. However there were left over trash in our room not as obvious but small enough for us to have noticed. Otherwise great experience overall.
- 5/5
Very clean, nice rooms.
- 5/5
Quiet, clean, spacious. Helpful staff. Nice pool. Great restaurant. Had everything we needed. Loved it.
- 5/5
The only thing we didn’t like was that the food service options were all closed on Sunday. Otherwise it is a beautiful hotel with very comfortable beds.
- 4/5
Love the convenience of the Hotel Madison. I can visit my daughter on campus and never worry about where I am or where I'm going to park. Clean space, friendly service. Air conditioning is a little wonky (it is difficult to make room cool), but that is my only criticism.
- 2/5
Staff need better training. Room not cleaned
- 5/5
Room was clean and relatively modern. Parking was conveniently located. Breakfast was good, but not included in the price.
- 4/5
Did not appreciate being charged for a stale breakfast buffet staffed by three wildly disinterested employees who couldn't be bothered to look a customer in the eye while asking for a tip on an automated device.

Great place to stay, the atmosphere and general overall vibe was amazing

Excellent staff and beautiful Hotel. Housekeeping made sure our room was fresh and clean, no complaints at all with the layout of room. My only complaint that costed my husband and I bad back pain was the Fred Flinstone Bedrock King sized concrete bed that we slept on. It was by far the worst sleeping experience we have ever had on a bed matress, if that's what you would call it. I almost feel like I deserve a discount for the therapy I will need to straighten our back issues. The sofa sleeping area provided for our son left his back in dire straights as well. Nothing but cheap box springs. The next morning was relatively better. We enjoyed the Excellent breakfast we ordered. My husband did not care for the roasted potatoes that he complained of being undercooked but I thought the roasted potatoes were prepared perfectly. The eggs and sausage were plenty and delicious. My only complaint was that biscuits were not available for order and I would have preferred to enjoy the large breakfast bar but understandable that it was not available since there were not enough people present in the Hotel for them to open the bar. All in all if you have no back issues or don't mind sleeping on a hard matress, or starring at an empty breakfast bar then I would say please make a stay at this Hotel because the surrounding walking area and places to visit makes it well worth the stay including the friendly staff, the housekeeping, the food, as well as other appreciated features.
- 3/5
Ok so location perfect. Perfect ended there. 3rd floor room you heard all the traffic. Every engine rev, college kids being college kids. Pool area was just ok. Loud music, NO hot water! Who doesn't have hot water! Mezzanine is on the 2nd floor. No signage in elevators. Slowest elevators ever. No, won't stay there again
- 5/5
I feel breakfast should be included

Stayed 2 nights but had no housekeeping services. We were out all day and by the time we got back to hotel it was too late. Upon checking out reception told us it has to be requested and we should have been told that when checking in. No one told us. Very disappointing to say the least

Breakfast buffet food was cool and coffee urn was empty. They did make more coffee, so it was very fresh. These were minor annoyances. What was really disturbing was the housekeeper's loud talking outside our room sometime before 8 a.m. She woke my husband and me. When I asked her to be quiet, she gave me a nasty look and mumbled domething in another language that I did not understand.
- 4/5
The hotel and staff are fabulous. The rooms are getting tired a little. They are spotless with great beds and pillows. We’ve been staying there for 6 years and there have been no upgrades.
- 4/5
Great location. Parking was easy. Staff were helpful and friendly.

It’s always a great stay
- 2/5
HOWEVER, usually a pleasant stay at the Madison. This is my 3rd straight year working an event there. Unfortunately, the staff seemed to be “mailing it in” in terms of service this year. Ok, housekeeping is “by request”, by it took 3 requests on a given day to get just a little service to my room. If you ask for “coffee service”, apparently it’s not clear that includes clean cups and compliments (cream and Sugar), not just a couple Keurig Cups. It took 2 more calls to get it right, along with empty trash cans and clean towels Maybe could have explained it away as isolated, yet the conference had problems with coffee service on Monday and the happy hour bar was late on Tuesday. Generally, a good stay with good amenities for the price.

Good location. Breakfast was less than amazing and expensive.
- 3/5
The hotel is located right in JMU very easy location, 1/2 mile from downtown. The lobby is very nice, breakfast was fine, nothing crazy but good enough. Check in was ok, we didn’t get the room we booked and was told to talk to Expedia about it. There was a strange odor on the floors, not sure if it was new carpeting or wallpaper but it was strong. Room was nice and spacious, bathroom was ok, shower just had a glass panel, no door or curtain. It’s a bit noisy at night, Main Street is busy.
- 5/5
Very nice place to stay.

Great location
- 3/5
Great property in a great location. However, the TV in our room did not work. We discovered it later in the evening. By the time we called to report it and troubleshoot it, it was just too late to deal with. Due to the holiday, I was told there was no coffee served in the morning anywhere without a reservation in the restaurant.
- 4/5
Very good location
- 5/5
Perfect for what it is.

Hotel Madison is a tremendous facility centrally located in the middle of Harrisonburg & JMU. It’s close to historic Harrisonburg and our must stay when traveling through the area.

This is a great hotel but if you were checking in on a Sunday, there are no amenities is open. The restaurant is closed. Thank you.
- 5/5
Nice staff and roomy lobby
- 5/5
It was great thank you
- 4/5
The rooms were fantastic. The restaraunt and bar was closed.
- 4/5
We had a nice time staying here during the holidays. The lobby area was decorated festively, and there were free concerts each evening. The hotel is located in an area convenient to downtown Harrisonburg. We enjoyed the cafe and the full breakfast in the hotel restaurant. The art gallery on the mezzanine was also a nice feature. Two things that were a disappointment: the room had a funny smell. We wondered if it had been a pet-friendly room and a lot of bleach was used? The smell was off-putting. Secondly, the beds were surprisingly uncomfortable. Overall, we had a good experience, but some areas could be improved.
- 5/5
Good location
- 5/5
We didn't use the gym. The restaurant in the lobby is so convenient and very good. We didn't have to leave once we got there. We like the little amenities such as real coffee cups in the room , not plastic or paper. We always stay at this hotel on our way to north carolina.

This whole hotel is beautiful! Great amenities. Easy parking. Love the kitchen in the room complete with full fridge, stocked kitchen supplies, 2 stove tops. I would absolutely book to stay here again. Our room was spacious and clean! 10/10
- 3/5
I personally don’t like rooms that connect to other rooms from inside MY ROOM. Very peaceful place to stay.
- 2/5
I got on the floor to stretch this morning and saw under the beds. The carpet under the beds has NEVER BERN VACUUMED. There was an inch of dust and small objects on the carpet. It was disgusting. I have felt sick all day and I’m sure that is why.
- 5/5
Staff was courteous and the room was spacious and comfy.

Internet outside of the lobby didn’t work well. Towels were so bleached they actually hurt my skin.

The rooms were spacious and clean. We will definitely stay again on our next trip through town.

The room was clean. I was a little surprised that there were only sample bottles of toiletries, rather than showwer mounted bottles. However the staff were superb and very accommodating. Would recommend to a friend.

The site stated that housekeeping came e everyday but our room was never cleaned and I had to continuously call for clean towels…. Other than that the hotel was lovely

Newer hotel with very inviting common areas. Best hotel location if you are looking to explore Harrisonburg and JMU.
- 5/5
Checked out prior to the time breakfast was offered
- 5/5
Always consistent, clean , quiet , great service.

Check in was not great for an elderly couple with a disability. Directions should have been to-- unload luggage at front door--carts near by, take things to room and then move car to the garage at the back of the hotel. We were only told about the parking. Went and parked--no carts and walked long distance back to the front involving two elevators to find out the carts only at the front. Had to walk all the way back to the parked car, drive around front and start over. Not a good experience for a customer in his 80:s. Never told that we had to swipe card to get elevator to take us to our room--another guest had to tell us. Question how we get ice from another floor (only certain floors with ice machines) when machine out of ice on our floor. Elevator won't let you stop at any floor by your room floor. Purchased some water and sodas in hotel--put on hotel bill. When checking out asked for receipt. Told would receive from reservation company, Never did. Not sure why was said since had to leave a deposit to cover things like this. Left with no receipt for items I purchased in the hotel

We stayed one night on a road trip. The lobby is nice but the hallways and room weren’t clean. The walls in the room had scuffs, spills, and drips down them. The chair had stains. There were dust bunnies everywhere. There was food and crumbs on the hallway floor. The fitness center was ok but it needs to be cleaned too.

My experience at this hotel was wonderful from start to finish. The check-in process was smooth, the room was beautifully maintained, and the amenities exceeded expectations. The staff went above and beyond to make my stay enjoyable. I would definitely return and recommend it to anyone visiting the area

My daughter is a student at JMU, so the location can’t be beat. The hotel is beautiful and clean. My only complaint are the beds. They are so hard, it’s painful. We’ve stayed here multiple times and each time we leave sore.
- 2/5
Very noisy hotel. Doors slamming all the time. Evening, night time and early morning. Front desk staff at check in and check out seemed as if you were interrupting them.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, friendly staff and close to everything
- 2/5
Noisy students and loud music in hallway until past midnight. Called the front desk for assistance but no change in noise level. Was more like a dorm experience than a hotel.

The food was cold and taste awful for 15.99 up front I see why you have to pay up front

The lobby bar was awesome as was the bartender. The coffee bar in the restaurant was great. All staff were friendly. The room was clean and quiet especially the air conditioning unit and the temperature in the room was very even and comfortable. The entire look of the hotel was awesome Very enjoyable stay

It’s a great hotel with prime location for JMU events. I wish they had a more lenient policy with cancellations so that one could pay a bit more and have the right to cancel at some reasonable date. I like staying there but sometimes I need more flexibility, or the student staying there that I”m visiting has their schedule change.
- 4/5
Campus is right there! And downtown!
- 5/5
This was a great stay, very clean and comfortable.

- 4/5
Hotel is beautiful, wasn’t a football weekend but it was DEAD. Rome was nice, but mattress was really hard. Convenient since my son lives 2 blocks away. Front desk barely said 2 words to me when I checked in, nothing about services they have available or breakfast options. Could’ve been better.
- 5/5
Really nice hotel. Large rooms. Clean hotel.
- 5/5
Clean rooms, friendly staff, perfectly situated next to campus and walkable to downtown.
- 5/5
Great location for visit to JMU
- 5/5
Nice hotel on the jmu campus!
- 4/5
Was checked into the wrong room even after proving my name and id to verify, then was asked to pay an additional amount for them to switch my room to the room I reserved which was the more expensive room to begin with
- 5/5
Chain hotels at interstate. Coffee shop on first floor. Nice gym.
- 5/5
The hotel was beautiful and very clean. Ease of checking in and out were exceptional. Parking was free which is not the case in many hotels. My room was well appointed and very clean. The bed was super comfortable. I definitely recommend the Madison Hotel and would stay there again.

We always stay here if possible.its clea

We liked the hotel, we were just disappointed that the bar and the restaurant weren't open part of the time we were there. We choose our hotel by the amenities and when they're not open it's disappointing.
- 5/5
So pleased with this hotel. Clean and very conveniently close to town.

The staff is unresponsive to messages through Expedia. I have stayed here two times and there was an issue with the reservation both times, requiring extra time at check-in and check-out. The desk manager suggested that I book directly with the hotel next time. This hotel is definitely not Expedia-friendly.
- 5/5
Very convenient to be attached to JMU.
- 5/5
Hotel Madison is a beautiful property! It was clean and the hotel staff was great!
- 3/5
The property is showing its age and needs a little tlc. Rooms not super clean and ac didn’t work well. Not what it has been when we have stayed here in the past and not up to standards you’d expect from this level of hotel. Pilled bed sheets, stains on furniture, broken elevator, etc.We expected more and were disappointed.
- 5/5
Close to shops
- 5/5
Great Place. No problems at all
- 1/5
The ac didn't work. It was so hot. They couldn't fix it and told me someone would come speak to me about and never did. I left a day early because of it and they wouldn't reimburse me because I booked through Expedia. Also the coffee pot in room didn't work!

Pleasant facilities and gorgeously clean area and town! Only objection was the use of annoying sliding doors for the bathroom, which allows neither privacy or convenience. Bring back the doors!
- 5/5
Excellent!!
- 4/5
Loved the hotel except the mattress was very hard. 7th floor so maybe they haven’t replaced them yet. But loved the hotel and I’d stay there again but they need to invest in better mattresses.
- 5/5
Amazing place
- 3/5
I didn't like the inside of the shower, as only one door covered it.
- 5/5
The hotel was great very nice great location and they took off the main dish from my bill after I showed them the long hair I found in it, did spoil the rest of the meal.
- 4/5
The staff were really nice. It was clean.
- 5/5
Solid hotel with easy access from the highway in a quiet location. We will be back to stay again!
- 2/5
When you log into their WiFi, it gives you the option to pay extra for premium speed internet. I learned today that it’s a joke. The rep had no idea there was even the option and made it clear there is only 1 WiFi signal. It’s a red herring. It’s dishonest and stressful when you need premium speed to do your work.
- 4/5
Check in was pleasant and there was live music in the lobby last night that was very enjoyable!
- 4/5
Great hotel recommend
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel with comfortable seating in lobby. Piano in lobby in the evening was nice. Close to wineries and town
- 3/5
The shower doesn’t have a curtain or a glass door to keep the water in. You can turn the shower nozzle down and away from where entrance to the shower is, and naturally the floor will get wet. That’s a slip hazard, especially for someone elderly. It makes no sense. The cons far outweigh the pros with that. There’s also no exhaust fan for the shower. When it gets steamy, everything in there gets wet. I couldn’t change the temp in the room. There’s the temp control is on the wall, but when we would try to adjust it, it would default to what they had it set to. There’s no microwave. You pay for parking which stinks, but your aware of that when you book. We stayed 2 nights, paid $420, and i could’ve got a better room at Quality inn. It was underwhelming.

Property clean, staff friendly and so close to jMU

The hotel was a clean, modern property next to the beaitoful James Madison University campus. We used it as a base to visit Shenandoah National Park. Our only issue was the restaurant, Monte's. Absolutely the worst of any conference hotel I've stayed at, and I traveled for a living for decades. Service could have been a Saturday Night Live skit, and the food matched. Fortunately, we found a great alternative 5 minutes away.
- 5/5
Proximity to JMU.
- 5/5
Couches are super uncomfortable but everything else is great! Lots of room in the suite and kitchen and full fridge is nice!
- 3/5
HVAC did not cool room sufficiently. Vending machines were all out of water. Drinking glasses in room were dirty upon arrival.
- 5/5
Convenient, easy parking, felt safe and rooms were very comfortable.
- 4/5
I’ve stayed here many times. My mom is in a nursing home in Harrisonburg. I’ve always gotten great service with front desk and restaurant but when I check in on the 7th of July the young man who is maybe college age checked me in. He did not greet me, ok no big deal but I could barely hear him. After checking me in he just point to the elevators and said “you can take those elevators. Well luckily I knew that I had to park in the garage and how to get to the garage and that it is $5.00 a day. No personality what so ever and not helpful. The room was very clean and staff at the restaurant were very pleasant and I had a pleasant experience checking out
- 4/5
The hotel itself was lovely and beautiful. The room was put together well. Unfortunately my bed was was rock hard. I found it extremely difficult to sleep.
- 4/5
Great location quiet town.
- 4/5
Everyone was very professional and helpful. Beautiful facility.
- 5/5
It was a great hotel. Super clean. Parking was great. Check in was smooth.
- 3/5
The indoor pool was oddly cold for being located near all that sun and glass. Maybe heated is the war to go if you're going to have it available. My son really wanted to swim. All else was nice.
- 5/5
Lovely hotel. I was traveling with my service dog. The first room I was offered was not made up when I went into the room. Back down to the check-in desk, a different person took care of me this time. When I informed the front desk, the room was not made up. They told me that they typically place guests with their service dog on the second floor and that after checking it appeared, none of the rooms were made up on the second floor. The gentleman hesitated, as if I was supposed to wait until one of the rooms was cleaned and the original guest services stepped in and placed me on the third floor. Just an observation, overwhelmingly check-in at large hotels seem to be staffed with less than friendly staff. I believe I could mention one hotel recently where I had a positive front desk experience with someone that was very friendly other than that, they are frequently aloof, and cold acting. I believe hospitality needs to be emphasized for front desk. The hotel itself was wonderful interestingly enough a janitor walking by was the one who informed me where to walk my dog front desk didn’t offer that information. The hotel is a very nice facility with great food options I would consider staying again. I’m just hopeful. Front desk is more friendly

Overall, hotel is nice. Signs of age are evident but still well kept accommodations. Nice and clean. The lobby smells great. Pool is nice. Bar and bartenders are great. Restaurant is just ok. Biggest negative is not re.oving parking from my bill, as promised by Expedia Perks.

This was such a nice hotel. The people were so friendly!

The only complaint was the in room coffee was terrible. I believe the coffee maker needed to be cleaned. The restaurant should open earlier than 7. Other than that great place

I couldn't figure out where the check in counter was located at first. But after people pointed me in the right direction I figured it out.

WE had a good stay, however when we arrived we were given a key to a room with two beds (which is what my selection was) When we walked into the room it was clearly occupied. They gave us a suite, but our football player was forced to sleep on a sofa bed. Which isn't the end of the world but he had to perform the next day at a college football camp.

This hotel is beautiful. The man who checked me in and the man who checked me out were so nice. The hotel restaurant makes delicious food and it’s so easy to order and take back to the room. I also used the gym which was also nice.

Slow service below average food quality

We had some critical meetings and the wifi failed on us. This is still a favorite hotel of mine, but it just did not feel like it had the same vibe as my previous visits.
