The Sands of La Jolla

This is a great hotel in a great location. It's no-frills, but the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the parking is included. We have stayed here several times, and not once have we had poor service or a disappointing stay. It's a great value.

This was a great value. Clean and big room with fancy electronic standing desk to work from. Enjoyed the balcony. Quiet neighborhood but there's a couple things nearby in Bird Rock (Wayfarer bakery is incredible!) and only a mile walk to go out in Pacific Beach or quick drive to the heart of La Jolla. Would def stay again

We really enjoyed our stay at Sands of La Jolla! We stayed on the second floor with a king-sized bed, and the room was clean, with a balcony to lay out towels and swim suits.

Very clean, nice staff, spartan room, hangers too high for short people, put handle on bathroom door, coffee in the room would be a nice addition.

It was clean, quiet even though our balcony was over looking the pool. Beds were comfortable. Clean and comfortable everything you want in a stay.

The property was clean and well maintained inside and outside of the rooms. The location was great and parking was easy. My only suggestion would be some sort of mirror outside of the bathroom, but that’s coming from a family traveling with teenage daughters.

Size of the room was great! Just like the picture. We had room for a twin inflatable bed too. Hangers to hang clothes. Great mini fridge to chill out case of water and Gatorades. Great size shower, plenty of water pressure and hot water. Wish there were more hooks or bars in the bathroom to hang towels. Not enough for 4 people to hang and dry towels. They could be hung out with the clothes but not ideal. Also, the hole in the bathroom counter for the trash sucks. I get the concept and appreciate a large trash can out of the way but I need bathroom counter space. We accidentally had items go into the trash that we had to dig out. Suggest some kind of solid lid maybe??

Great location. The person who checked us into hotel was very kind and helpful. I wish I had more time to spend at the hotel. We arrived in the evening and had to check out by 8 a.m. because of our schedule. It is in a great location near the beach and restaurants. The coffee shop nearby was reasonable and people were friendly.

Wow, what a find! Great value and so close to where we wanted to go, good beaches, food, and a surf shop within walking distance. A little loud one of five nights due to rowdy guests, and coffee makers in the units would be nice too. I will stay again.

I enjoyed everything about this place! Easy parking right outside our room and the staff was friendly. Very clean and updated rooms plus the beds were really comfortable. Loved how close it was to everything and an easy drive to most places. My only small issue was we were on the first floor and you can hear all the footsteps from above but it doesn’t really bother me.

Great experience! Room was perfect for a long weekend. Staff was very kind and helpful. Nothing special but very clean, updated, safe, and had everything we needed for a long weekend. Great location (if you like to walk). About a 20 min walk to pacific beach and 10 mins to public beach access point between pacific beach and bird rock. Lots of cute coffee shops within a 5 min walk along wth a CVS next door which was very convenient.

The rooms themselves felt like a motel room not a hotel.

I was surprised to see the property was in such excellent condition very clean, it shows that the maintenance workers keep the paint fresh no garbage around the place they make it look very nice very clean , the staff very helpful plenty of parking this time that I stayed it was cool so I didn’t need to use the air-conditioning. I’m a happy camper.

I don’t know if it was the location of the room, we were on the ground floor. The room was excellent because we had 4 adults otherwise I would’ve asked to be moved. I did speak to the staff a couple of times and they did know about the noise issue.

This place was phenomenal, let me start by saying how clean it was and how everything was up to date. The balcony has a pool view and the sun set was amazing. There are plenty of coffee shops around and food places as well. I’ll definitely be staying here in the future.

Our suite was very nice. The beds were so comfortable, We were a party of 3 older women are are used to a coffee pot and microwave in our room. Coffee was available in the lobby. A communal microwave was locates on each floor. Our suite had 2 rooms, a total of 3 beds, and only one bathroom. Very different than our norm. The stay was very nice. The staff was excellent.

The cleaning staff actually found my passport after it had fell behind the trash can and placed it on the countertop for me. Highly highly recommended.

Close to Mission and Pacific beach. 10 minutes from downtown LaJolla ( city roads with low speed limits and traffic lights ). Free!!!! Parking, coffee available all day in the office, heated pool, refrigerator in room. Microwave on every floor outside in various places depending where your room is. Elevator to access 2nd and 3rd levels. Gated access to second and third floor rooms for added security.😎✌️

Decent location but not as many restaurants as further north on Prospect - clean accommodation and good value for LaJolla.

The property was very modern and tidy. I loved being able to pull right off the street in a good, quiet area, and right into a parking spot that was right by a property entrance. It felt so easy at the end of a long tiring day. No long walks to get to the room or the pool or the elevator. It was perfectly clean and the staff was excellent. They helped efficiently and graciously when i had a little incident. They could have been total jerks about it but they were kind and cooperative. The location is a very short direct drive to many excellent beaches and the road is easy to navigate. No traffic issues in that area. The shower was modern and very clean and nice, as was the bed and all the parts of the room. It was so quiet in the room even when people were at the pool below our room.

The staff was polite, our room was clean. The party that stayed in the room above us, stayed up all night, drinking playing music very loud and rolling their their chair back-and-forth across the floor and we did not get any sleep.

Perfect location cloth to pharmacy, breakfast places and great restaurants. Safe and beautiful neighbourhood with 25 minutes proximity on foot to Pacific beach. Excellent value.

The location is fantastic. The hotel itself has been remodeled well, the room was clean - excellent bathroom and sink area, great lighting. Loved the patio door opened at night.

The room was clean and quiet. I don't care for the sink/vanity set up as it is too high and very wide, which makes it hard for anyone under 5'4 to get ready. Otherwise it was a nice room.

Ok. My ONLY ISSUE. Please hang a full length mirror next to the bathroom entry door to the right? I am referring to room 106. How does a girl get ready without being able to see if our shoes look lame w our outfit? Also, my room lock didn’t work unless pushed to close. I left all day & my door was ajar. I know it makes a slight beeping sound but that was not every time. Otherwise, great crash pad in La Jolla. Close to PB. Safe. Thank you. LOVED the shower head too. Major +

Looked better in the photos than it actually was. Staff was great and helpful, no issues there. The main complaint was usability of the room itself: Fridge had no freezer, lamp was broken, desk/lamp was very odd (a raisable desk), mirror in bathroom was strange as well. It's like they spent the money in the wrong areas, trying to be high-tech/gadgety for some reason. Remote for smart TV was not supplied, so we had to go to front desk to get it in order to watch Prime/Netflix. No microwave in room (surprising) - had to walk to common one in hallway. No coffee maker in room. Again, they could make a big leap forward by fixing some of these basic items.

Love the location of this hotel - walking distance to beach and shops in downtown Bird Rock. The property appears to have been recently updated based on the finishes and smell of new paint. Unfortunately, the update missed the mark in terms of amenities. Beds were low, lumpy, and uncomfortable. Not enough pillows. No coffee in room, no full-length mirror, no pool towels (had to use bath towels). The layout was strange - with a desk cramped in the corner. Temp was hard to regulate on a very warm weekend as A/C is provided by a mini-split system on the wall in center of room. Balcony is a nice touch, but when sitting on the balcony, the height of the railing wall doesn't allow one to see over it - so not much to look at! Be cautious when selecting a 1st or 2nd floor room as the rooms have been updated with vinyl plank flooring - which made it very noisy when the upstairs guest was walking around overhead with heels on. Nice looking hotel with convenient location, but for the same price I would likely choose other options available in La Jolla Village.

The Sands of LaJolla is a great place to stay. The rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable and the staff goes out of their way to make you feel welcomed. I love the area, walkable and safe. There are coffee shops, restaurants and beautiful ocean views right down the street. I would rate it an 11 if they had full length mirrors in the rooms.

The Room was very clean in my book. I was only there one night, so I didn't get to see the balcony. When I got there, the front desk upgraded me to a suite. That was nice. Just more room than I needed. Location-wise it was all good. Parking is tricky, but other than that, I couldn't ask for more.

I love the added little touches that were an "upgrade" for the room such as a standing desk and light that gives you the temperature of the room. Very clean, especially the pool which I find can be a hit or miss at a hotel. Staff was very friendly and able to answer any questions that I had about the stay. As someone who needed to be displaced from my home due to flooding and mold exposure, this was a very refreshing stay for me during this time. Thank you!

Clean room and friendly staff

I lost my reservation number and called the hotel 8 times that day, no one answered the phone. No one emailed me until 2am in the morning saying they left the key. They then charged me $100 after paying Expedia, they gave me a credit of $ 15.00. I kept trying to get a person and only a text saying they are not responsible for not answering the phone.

Would absolutely stay here again, we really liked it. Only complaint is the lack of a nightstand on the right side of the bed.

Great location for a reasonable price. Room was comfortable and clean. Staff was friendly, helpful and accommodating. It was a perfect visit to La Jolla.

Room was extremely clean and very spacious. Bathroom was updated and shower had good pressure. The bed was comfortable but pillows could've been better. The only downfall was the lack of insulation between floors. We could hear every foot step, object being dropped, suitcase being rolled, etc. If you're sensitive to noise, DO NOT STAY ON 1st or 2nd floor! Luckily our neighbors upstairs went to bed at a decent hour. Otherwise our 4 day stay would've been horrible. It is a very nice hotel close to the beach and in a very nice La Jolla neighborhood! Free parking was a huge bonus and rare.

The newly remodeled rooms are beautifully done with state of the art electronics and well-appointed decor. The balcony has a lovely table and chairs. The cleanliness of the entire property—rooms, pool area, halls, landscaping is commendable. A wonderful find!!!

This Sands is a very clean hotel with simple and functional furnishings and a great swimming pool! I found the pool a great place to get some sun and a quick swim. It is on the border of La Jolla, but about halfway between Pacific Beach and downtown La Jolla. The front desk, staff person, and all of the housekeeping and service staff were very friendly and helpful.

We stayed for 4th of july weekend. The room was everything we needed and we loved it! check in/out was super smooth and the staff was very nice. The location was perfect, super quiet and nice. A bunch of restaurants in a 5 minute walk radius. Cvs being right next door was also super convenient. Didn’t have any problems with noise, even being right by the pool. One thing i wished they did was give a parking pass, just to be able to secure a parking spot everyday. But when they ran out of parking, the staff was helpful and accommodating on other places to park

The Sands of La Jolla is a great, very clean, very friendly hotel. My complaint was with others who stayed there were so inconsiderate. I was on the 2nd floor end and the 3rd floor people above were so noisy, kids jumping around, dropping heavy things on the floor, just being disrespectful to all neighbors until late at night. Only room complaint was the shower head hose was leaking pretty bad. The hotel itself and staff were great.

La Jolla is beautiful. This hotel was too. Super clean, very friendly staff. The cleaning ladies are the sweetest and most helpful I've seen in a while. The hotel layout is a bit weird because you can't access the lobby without going outside, but nothing too bothering. After all, this is California and you should expect things like this. The room was excellent and we loved the balcony, so much we actually had coffee and diner outside. The pool may use a bit of TLC.

Location to town

The area was nice but the room grossed me out so bad. Just keep seeing pieces of other people’s hair everywhere (all kinds). In the bathroom, on the rug, in the bed. And the sheets felt musty & clammy. They need different sheets. It was hard for me to sleep comfortably in bed since it felt dirty so I could not sleep with the sheets on top of me. Not only that it just felt like a weird vibe in there and both me & my husband had a bad dream.

This property was completely remodeled over the last couple of years. We love BirdRock, so treated ourselves to a staycation (we live in SanDiego). They did a really nice job, room was spacious, elevator was a good size capacity. All around, very comfortable. We booked a 2nd floor king, and we ended up with a two bedroom as a bonus. Very reasonable pricing for the location. Would stay again and wouldn’t hesitate sending out of town guests there. The only thing I wish they would do is in-room coffee pods (think Keurig). They did have some coffee/tea in the lobby and there is Bird Rock Coffee Roasters and Starbucks just down the street. Thank you!

Close to the surf

Property was nice, clean and the service was great. Nice quiet location in a charming neighborhood. I appreciated the nice modern design and unconventional details. Only recommendation I would make is to add a full mirror to the room for dressing purposes. Could mount it to the back of the door or on one of the walls.

This was a great little motel in La Jolla. It was clean and comfortable with several very good restaurants and coffee shops within easy walking distance. My only complaint was that you could easily hear guests in other rooms, especially those above us.

The Sands of La Jolla is in a very nice neighborhood and just one block from the Pacific Ocean. The staff are very professional and are willing to help. The room is clean and comfortable. We enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend.

Housekeeping did a great job and always serviced my room even when I got out late. Check in agents were all very nice. Only issue is that you can hear guest above you. The pool is heated which is nice but I didn’t get a chance to get in. I would come again.

Our room was so convenient and comfortable! We loved the location of hotel. The complementary coffee and hot chocolate were a fun bonus.

Can’t honestly say enough good about this place. Guy at the desk was welcoming, they give you a paper with all of the local hot spots, even a $5 coupon for the best restaurant in town like, 5 minutes walk down the street! Apparently they have a neighborhood watch always going around so I felt very safe to walk at night. Showers were great, room super clean, pool area is well mood lit at night, it was very quiet, parking was free and they let me stay parked even after check out while I went for a coffee. All in all, the best hotel I’ve been to in a long time.

Front desk staff was outstanding. Stephanie and I think Denise not completely sure on her name both were exceptionally nice and helpful. Location is good parking can be a little tight. Pool area is small and there is no vending but there is a cvs at the end of the block.fairly quiet area.

Had a great time. The room was super clean. My wife brings wipes on every trip so she can clean the place before settling in. There was no dirt/dust on the wet wipe because the room was spotless.

The Sands is a gem in the Bird Rock area of La Jolla. The location is great with it being block from the ocean and down the street from anything you may need for food, drinks, etc. The employees are awesome and I look forward to my next stay.

This little gem is awesome! Across the street from the pacific. Room is clean, quiet, and has a killer fridge if you stay for a few days. Right down the street is killer food and entertainment. This would be worth it at twice the price!

I have stayed at this property several times and it is a nice place to stay. It has been remodeled a few years ago and is very nice inside. The bed is very comfortable. There is a nice pool. My only complaint is that it closes at 10 PM. Is my personal belief that the pool should be open until the morning time. The place is a little bit more expensive than other local hotels and I did have noise issues with the person that was above me because they don’t have carpet which I think is something all hotel should have other than those little complaints. I would definitely stay there again.

Recently completely renovated property. Very nice rooms with large walk-in shower, comfortable beds, nice terrace and big TV. Staff was very friendly and efficient. Located in a quiet residential area with restaurants nearby. Only 2 blocks from the ocean. One plus: Real coffee (no pods or k cups) served in the lobby with a choice of creamers and sweeteners. Tea and hot cocoa available too.

Our stay was off-season and the hotel was not full, but our room was clean, well laid-out and perfect for our quick get-away. The town was a bit sleepy and closed up early but that was just fine for us. I'd recommend this hotel - it was a great stay!

We definitely plan to return to this location. The room was clean and very comfortable. The service was great. Coffee, though not in each individual room, is available in the hotel lobby with an assortment of creamers. There is a microwave available, outside the room, in a shared common area. This location has easy walking access to the shore, shops, coffee, bakery, all within 2 to 3 blocks. The view to the West was great. We look forward to staying here again.

I was happy with the room, it was clean, the beds were soft and comfortable. The room did not have a coffee machine, I went to the office to get some coffee, but they did not open until 8 am. If early morning coffee is a must have you will need to drive or walk to a coffee shop. i would stay here again despite the coffee issue.

The staff was wonderful and the location is very convenient to explore the Pacific Beach area.
