We can’t wait to go back again!! 💜 Ashley at the outdoor patio bar was spot on with service. Alex in the same area was so helpful as well. It’s a beautiful place top notch service and delicious food. We LOVED it!!

Great staff and view

From the minute we arrived we felt right at home. The staff was super friendly and the room was clean bright and very modern and the view even better. We were celebrating our birthdays and had dinner at Splashes. Again the view was amazing. The cocktails were so so, but everything else was great. Would recommend this place in a second.

Absolutely loved it here! Property is beautiful, staff was incredibly helpful and nice. Our room was perfect, with the waves crashing right below us. I had Ali, the concierge manager set up our room while at dinner for my proposal to my girlfriend. It was perfect with rose pedals and candles. Definitely will be back!!

It was the perfect romantic getaway for us. Everything felt relaxing, special, and memorable from the moment we arrived. We already can’t wait to book another room and come back again soon. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a peaceful and romantic escape.

This is a true five star hotel, with a beautiful location, and excellent service. The hotel is well-maintained, and while it can be pricey, it's worth it.

Only complaint is they list as Expedia VIP but they didn’t honor it when I arrived. They argued about it and tried to charge $800 per night more for the upgrade which is free to VIP members. Even the manager did not understand it. They shouldn’t be on the program if they do not honor it. I would return.

Smoking came from a persons room and because you keep your doors open , it came into ours and it was terrible for a few hues

Rooms very clean I liked how you can see the ocean from the balcony with the glass railing staff friendly and very helpful valet were awesome help you with luggage ask if you needed water or anything else very nice the only thing we didn’t like was there’s only one garbage can in the room and no microwave but other than that really nice can’t wait to come back

What an amazing time! Everything was exceptional. We took full advantage of all the amenities the resort had to offer. The staff at the front desk, all of the food service employees, housekeeping and valet were so professional and accommodating. Food and drinks were were 10/10. Room views were so picturesque. Beautiful view from oceanfront room, as pictured, sparkling clean room, helpful staff. Accessible to north Laguna from trolley and a mile walk otherwise. My only complaint was the lack of transparency for requested early check in. I would prefer a ‘no’ rather than we will see and call you.. I checked every 30 min for status. If i knew it would never happen then I would have made other plans during that time. Expectations matter.

We had a mixed experience for this being a 5 star property, and all just solely based on opinions. 1. First and foremost, the staff at every encounter were amazing (valet, front desk, restaurants, pool, boutique store). We were treated kindly and with utmost respect no matter who we encountered. 2. The ocean view room was amazing! The ocean truly came right up to the hotel and we could hear the waves while we slept.amazing and makes it all worth it! 3.The breakfast (and, again, staff) were amazing at the onsite restaurant. What was unfortunate, was if you made reservations, you would still wait behind others to be seated, and it would take a while to be greeted by your server. Sometimes over 15 min. 4.The daily room housekeeping and nightly turn down service was hit or miss. I would schedule it on their app. Or request via their dedicated text & only once happened without me having to ask several times. I’m a stickler for housekeeping each day. I want a clean room, with fresh amenities and don’t want to ask over and over and over. We only got the nightly turn down (part of fee paid to resort) once during our 4 night stay. we’d have to text in the morning for fresh towels, coffee etc. 5. The pools was pure chaos. This was due to inconsiderate guests and staff that didn’t enforce rules more. Chairs left unoccupied for hours while folks were down at the beach. Kids rinsng of sand in the hot tub, leaving it mucky. Kids running everywhere, eating in the pool, surfing in pool.

This was literally the best hotel that we've ever stayed at (which includes several Ritz and Four Seasons). When it says "on the beach", it's an understatement. We were on the first floor with the balcony feeling like we were over the water. The pool was also great, with the staff keeping up with lounge chair occupancy so nobody could "squat" all day without using it. The location in the town was amazing with an easy walk to breakfast each morning and dinner each evening (I'm sure that the hotel restaurants were nice, we just wanted to explore the town). The room was very nice and updated, with a big shower, huge separate tub, and double vanity sink.

The location was great Our stay was unfortunately far below what you would expect from a hotel of this category and price point. When we checked in and entered the room, the bed was covered in hair (photos attached). I immediately reported this at the front desk and was told it would be taken care of right away. However, after waiting around 45 minutes, no one had come. I followed up again and was reassured it would be handled immediately, but still nothing happened. In the end, after roughly two hours, I had to approach a cleaning staff member myself to get the issue resolved. Beyond this initial experience, housekeeping throughout the stay was inconsistent. Despite being a 5-star hotel, our room was often only cleaned around 5pm. Shortly after, turndown service would be offered, which made little sense given how late the room had just been cleaned. As this is part of the daily resort fee, it did not feel like a service that was actually delivered in a meaningful way. What made the experience particularly disappointing was the attitude at the front desk. The service often felt impolite and dismissive. At checkout, despite the booking and full payment being entirely under my name and credit card, the staff directed the payment confirmation toward my husband. He was not involved in the payment and could not have confirmed any details. This gave the clear impression that the payment responsibility was assumed to lie with him by default, which felt inappropriate. When I raised this afterward with guest services, the response I received was a generic “I’m sorry you perceived it that way,” which did not acknowledge the issue. Finally, certain elements included in the daily resort fee were not communicated or delivered. For example, no welcome drink was offered, and the resort fee itself was not proactively disclosed at check-in. Overall, this was far from a 5-star experience. Given the price, the lack of attention to detail, service quality, and professionalism was disappointing.

We stayed for 2 nights but our room was never cleaned. And the blond hostess at the Splash restaurant Sunday morning of Valentine’s weekend was incredibly rude which made our breakfast less enjoyable than it could’ve been. . But lady working at the boutique was very friendly and helped with my last minute purchase of a bikini. And room was very nice and our beachfront view was beautiful

We were upgraded to an ocean front studio at no additional cost. Very polite, friendly & professional staff. The hotel has been recently renovated & is stunning as are the rooms! Sunsets are amazing here. Splashes restaurant has excellent food & service. There’s also a morning coffee cafe for a quick on the go light breakfast. Loved it here!!

Great newly renovated property. Rooms have spectacular ocean views and first class all the way. The amenities they offer are top notch and fitting of a five star resort. The service was top notch as well and meets the five star standard. The restaurant was excellent but only one on the property. There are many excellent dining options in the area though and things to do. Very walkable. It seems to be set up more for private romantic stays and doesn’t have much in terms of activities or amenities for kids. No statement about LBBTQ+ inclusivity on this properties website or others the JC Property ownership group has which concerns me being part of the LGBTQ+ community. True five star resort though.

Fabulous…not cheap but worth every penny

We had the best time celebrating our 21st Anniversary and stayed 3 nights. The staff was beyond wonderful in every way. The bar and restaurant views were to die for and the oceanfront balcony of our room was the perfect backdrop for a relaxing stay. The coffee was excellent from the coffee shop each morning. The gym was perfect to get a quick workout in. The only negative was at the pool one day they allowed a non guest couple to come in and they were loud and changed the entire vibe of the pool day. It went from relaxing totally chill environment to we couldn’t wait to leave. The waiter, Jack at the pool was outstanding however. The bathroom in our room was a 10! You could see the ocean while you’re showering. Totally amazing. We will definitely return!

The staff was so helpful. When we dropped a bottle of wine and it broke on the floor, the front desk cleaned it up and sent us another bottle of wine to our room with a very nice note. When we had to move to another room, they were very understanding and moved us immediately. Great personal service. The beach view was incredible.

The Surf and Sand's oceanfront location is genuinely spectacular—the kind of view that justifies five-star pricing. Unfortunately, the service quality falls far short of the property's premium positioning. Dining Issues: Our concierge recommended Splashes despite acknowledging recent reconstruction concerns, claiming they'd received no complaints. The reality was a severely limited menu with overpriced, overly rich dishes that didn't justify the cost. When we expressed concerns, no alternative dining options were suggested. Cancelled Services: Multiple advertised amenities failed to materialize. Morning yoga and other scheduled activities were cancelled without advance notice. Most frustratingly, a spa facial appointment booked a month in advance was cancelled when the aesthetician simply didn't show up. Billing Problems: Despite prepaying for our room, the hotel placed a $1,300 hold on our card for "incidentals"—an unusually high amount for a one-night stay. Additionally, the spa charged $148 for the cancelled facial service, and spa staff couldn't locate any record of the charge when we inquired. Bottom Line: While the oceanfront setting is undeniably beautiful, the property's operational issues—from unreliable service to questionable billing practices—don't support its five-star reputation. The location alone isn't enough to justify the premium pricing when basic hospitality standards aren't met.

My daughter and I stayed here for a final mother daughter fling before baby comes in December. We had the best time. Our room overlooked the pool, cabanas and ocean, an excellent choice. We ordered room service ate on our large balcony watching the sunset. We felt pampered from start to finish. Highly recommend.

I have returned to the Surf&Sand over many years. The Service is always impeccable, personable, professional and gracious. From Kit & Allie who greeted us at reception to lovely housekeeping and room service staff, spa and restaurant. The makeover of the spa is not complete, however we received excellent massage services in our room overlooking the beautiful ocean and coastline. We stayed in a King studio oceanfront on the top floor and highly recommend. Beautifully appointed recently renovated. I wish we could've stayed forever.

However, when I checked out at 11 AM, I mentioned this to the management team, and to my surprise, they apologized and said they could have easily extended my checkout by an hour. This contradiction was frustrating and highlighted poor communication between the staff. A luxury hotel should prioritize guest experience and consistency in service. Had the front desk been better trained or more customer-focused, this could have been avoided. While I appreciate the management’s apology, it doesn’t change the fact that my request—one that is quite common—was unnecessarily denied. I hope the hotel improves its front desk training and communication to ensure that all guests receive the level of service expected from a high-end establishment.

Balcony with oceanview

We stayed the first weekend they opened after renovation. We appreciated the Manager reaching out proactively to let us know this in advance letting us know the pool and restaurant weren’t yet available, but letting us know they would set us up on the beach, and their terrace was available for dining and drinks. The staff was awesome! Everyone was so welcoming and provided the best customer service all weekend. The rooms are fantastic and the views are just the best. We can’t wait to come back, and hope to do so very soon!

Walking distance to everything.

Bathroom & shower doors have razor sharp edges. Too much clutter of glasses and bottles stacked up next to the tv. Whoever did the new design did a horrible job.

The whole property with staff was awesome!

This review is more for Hotel.com rather than the resort. Majority of the hotel is under construction. We never received an email from Hotels.com notifying us of the construction during our stay. It was loud and uncomfortable to say the least. The resort staff were very accommodating and apologetic when they realized we were not informed. We were upgraded to a very large and nice suite. Unfortunately the restaurant, bar and the beach for the resort were closed. We love this resort and have been going there for years and will go back after the renovations. The staff are very nice and provide excellent service.

I'm not a complainer but had to express our disappointment.

Ughhh there’s STILL construction going on. Our view was half ocean/half under construction building with scaffolding and tarps. The entrance is inconvenient and small. We were staying at the big end property up the street (highly recommend) 2 years ago and Surf and Sand was under construction back then! Shouldn’t be charged so much for a place under construction! Not to mention the whooping $45 a night to PARK along all the other ridiculous resort fees and CA special taxes.

I’ve stayed here a few times in the past. It’s expensive but usually worth it, not this time. Maybe wait for renovations to be completed before spending the $. Doubt I will do this again.

We had a very nice time. The hotel was conveniently located. We used the free trolley to get around because lots of traffic and parking issues.

Wow, where do I even start… Surf and Sand is the most prime location and literally right on the beach. Everything is walkable. The staff was so friendly and helpful with all our needs. The room was wonderful (Srufside) and the bed and bedding was very comfortable. The pool was heated and the hot tub was perfect. The food and drinks were delicious. The construction was hardly noticeable. Only noticed once when at the coffee shop, but more out of curiosity. We never heard anything! Overall a spectacular place!

We eat dinner and breakfast so bad! Not like before! We are come stay every thanksgiving day 3-4 day ! You need check the splash restaurant workers or manager need retraining dad! Even heating wasn’t working! At room. I want to see this message to GM . If they don’t fix . They need change the GM.

This property will be nice after the renovations but right now it’s not a 5 star property. Very average room. Overpriced food and drinks. Either pay more and go to the Ritz or less and you will find comparable hotels on the beach nearby.

Amazing property with the best amenities and staff

Was treated poorly by security made us feel unwelcome, but continued to come at me and my girlfriend after I said we were guest multiple times. Just extremely unprofessional uncalled for and not the actions of a 4 to 5 star hotel.

Great staff and loved the sound of the ocean - you literally couldn’t be closer! The property is under going a full renovation but there is minimal noise in the day and zero at night/morning. The property does need some updating so great they are investing. The food at the restaurant is excellent and there are lots of dining options within walking distance for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You could tell all the staff cared about the hotel and most had been there a lot time which says a lot about the care and attention they put in. Excited to see what the new rooms look when we return.

Property is in a great centeal location to everything on the Laguna strip. Everything was excellent during stay. However, I do have to add one thing that was odd at the end of my stay when I was abt to checkout. I went to the restaurant bar and asked the staffer/bartender if he had change to break a bill…when he handed me the change, he said…”this is for the restaurant, right?” Not sure what he meant by that or what he was trying to imply, and what does it matter what im using it for??? I thought that was odd him asking me that. (I wanted change so I could tip the housekeeping btw, but that was none of his business).

Dated facilities. Over priced. Broken phone. Failed to send someone to fix. Not the room shown on Expedia site. Terrible stay for big money.

Ultimately, if the room was half the price I’d not be writing a negative review. It unfortunately comes down to poor value and not meeting my high-expectations that came with that price. Note that I booked this room in early May, so it’s not as though I was booking this the week before when you’d expect to get hit with a higher rate. One last thing - not a single member of their team acknowledged we were there to celebrate our 25th anniversary despite my calling the hotel and letting them know after booking the room. I definitely will not be going back, and would not recommend. I’ve never left a negative review on Expedia before this…

The view was fantastic from our room and the ocean sound was great!!!. The in room dinning was fairly fast and the wait staff very nice and helpful, and we decided to eat in our room as the hostess for the restaurant was so snobbish and standoffish because we did not have a reservation. We were willing to wait, but chose to order in room service as it was not a welcoming welcome as paying guest of the hotel. That night only got worse as there was a false fire alarm at 2:something!! Yes, 2:00AM and nobody came to tell us it was a false alarm, we stood outside our room with other people trying to figure that out. When we checked out and I mentioned it, the front desk person acted like he had no idea. The other disappointment was that my electrical car could not be charged (either night) as they "only charge Teslas" which I found infuriating, in LA there is never an issue with charging at all hotels, so they need an adapter as the prevalence of so many more EVs will be a reality and the review may ensure the hotel invest in a $20 connector that I now carry. The pavlova dessert was fantastic. So, is the sound of the ocean, the view, and Pavlova enough for me to stay here and spend thousands of dollars at this resort again you ask when there are so many choices?

We paid $700+ for a room without AC during a hot stay? Had to open the doors, windows and fans, leaving no privacy. What a surprise! Also, no elevator to a wing with several floors. Not possible for older folk or disabled.

No Air Conditioning in Room only ceiling fan and room got warm even with windows open which we tried to maintain close due to proximity with pool and noise/privacy. Was charged for Valet although did not use this service and a room charge we did not make (both were refunded). Staff is not so friendly.

The staff was fantastic. Our only problem was with housekeeping. Our tissue box ran out of tissues the first night there. It was never replaced the next three days. Used glasses in the room were not taken out or replaced. Outside of housekeeping, it is a wonderful resort.
