Reviews
The hotel is praised for its excellent location near Lincoln Center and friendly staff. However, many guests express dissatisfaction with the outdated rooms, lack of amenities, and occasional maintenance issues.

everseen thehotel in the movie "barton fink"!
- 5/5
Very good
- 2/5
The room smelled musty and there were multiple water damage spots within the bathroom, including above the shower, above the cabinets and the bathroom door was in desperate need of a repaint. Multiple chipped and chipping areas that made the whole bathroom feel janky.
- 3/5
Great location.
- 5/5
The super friendly staff managed to blend unique NYC charm with warm customer service. Vibrant, witty, comfy - the Empire Hotel conveys the epitome of NYC's Upper West Side nestled in tony Lincoln Square. A true Gem.
- 5/5
Good are in New York. The staff was great.
- 2/5
Do not let the photos fool you the pool area is a big let down. Also rooms are not well maintained shower makes a loud noise throughout the night and sink constantly dripped water. The bright light was the staff who were all very kind the whole trip.
- 1/5
I would not recommend this property. To anyone.
- 2/5
This is a 2-star hotel with 4-star prices. The lobby is beautiful but once you enter the rooms - what a shock! Worn down, neglected, broken televisions, air conditioning & heating from the 70’s, hot water that literally takes 8 minutes (I timed it one morning) to reach the shower (on floor ONE), and once it does - there is no way to control it so you burn your skin off. Amenities? I guess if you consider sheets & towels amenities then they do okay. No coffee service anywhere in the hotel for guests and they actually have PAPER CUPS in the rooms at the prices they charge. I stayed here because of its proximity to Lincoln Center but I learned my lesson. Never again.
- 3/5
Excellent location, great rooftop bar, and good restaurant on site. Old and stained carpets, in need up updating and re painting all over the hotel. It's a pack em and stack em hotel and the entire place needs an upgrade.
- 1/5
the room was dated - the fixtures broken- sink was un- caulked, shower handle for water broken - the AC stopped working in middle of the night - and the biggest scheme was the pool- NO sun size of a bathtub - and so small only 10 sun chairs fit - DO NOT fall for this and pay this high price - everyone who came to the pull turned around and laughed - false advertising - horrible will not return
- 3/5
Are really small and the rooms have poor circulation The pool is very small as well Ok for a small stay but I would not stay here again
- 2/5
For the price tag, guest experience is shockingly poor. Doors, shower and AC were broken in our suite. We saved up an entire year for this, so disappointed.
- 2/5
This was not a great experience-there was huge line to check in, then at first they couldn’t find our reservation, but then did and we checked in. The staff was kind but overwhelmed. The bathroom was tiny, and the shower valve was stuck and the sink didn’t drain. We parked at the recommended parking lot (about - a 10 minute walk with bags) - we left early for a flight in the morning there was no one at reception to validate our parking ticket - so we had to pay full price. I tried to call down before checking out and no one answered the phone. It is however, a great location.
- 3/5
I’d stay again but nothing to brag about
- 3/5
Room not up to ADA standards.
- 1/5
Staff was not helpful and hotel rooms are extremely outdated
- 2/5
I was not provided a refund for 1 night stay as promised by management. Not a good value for your money. The images of the lobby look great. Do not be deceived.
- 4/5
It is convenient for the Lincoln Center.
- 5/5
Great location. Comfortable, no-frills room.
- 2/5
Overall, the property is tired with visible excessive wear that indicates its well-overdue for a refresh. A positive was the shower with a rain style shower head with great water pressure. Though, the shower floor had excessive wear: stained & worn shower floor, shelves for towels banged up badly with painted areas chipped. The beds were comfortable.
- 3/5
liked the location did not like the cockroaches
- 4/5
We enjoyed this hotel. Location was key. We wanted something close, but not in the middle of the action. This is the spot. Architecture was cool. Staff knowledgeable.
- 4.5/5
The staff was wonderful The bellhop was most helpful in storing our belongings prior to check in so we could attend a matinee play. Check in was pleasant and we were given complimentary bottles of water and were told we could ask for more if necessary. We requested extra towels for the room and they were delivered promptly. The upstairs bar was great and the hostess sat us promptly and also came back to tell us a better table was available to watch the Knicks game on TV. The drinks and avocado dip and chips were good. Beds were comfortable and room was quiet for sleep. Location was great. Steps away from Central Park and the Kaufman Music Center where we saw a concert. Neighborhood felt safe to walk. Plenty of restaurants and Starbucks in the vicinity. Was a great stay. Rooms could have better lighting in them.
- 3/5
The hotel itself was much older than the pictures and has not been updated. Example: paint chipped and carpet ripped in room.
- 2/5
value was pretty good. room was very small which I expected but the room was shabby, torn duvet, ceiling paint peeling, torn bedframe, beat up furniture. room should have had a refresh years ago. next time I'd pay more for a property that renovates before it looks so shabby.
- 4/5
Great location, nice lobby snd rooftop bar. Room was larger than expected snd bed was comfortable. Our room had no room safe, snd despite being told they would bring one, that never happened. Our accessible room had no phone and no call bell in the bathroom, which we thought was odd snd potentially dangerous. But for sny event at the Lincoln center you can’t beat it.
- 3/5
It was in a great location for my purposes, and the staff were very nice. The room was generally clean but a light blanket was stained (several stains including what looked like blood) and was not replaced. Room was teeny; hard to get around the bed without bumping into the bed or wall. Air conditioner vents were stained and wet, not enough light to even read the tv station chart or set/open up the safe; I had to use a small flashlight. The bathroom was teeny, but at least was updated; toilet was pretty low with no bars to help you get up. Wallpaper worn; room truly needed some loving care and updating. Will NOT stay there again.
- 3/5
Location location location. Right across the street from Lincoln Center.
- 5/5
Great hotel near Lincoln Center and the Met
- 4/5
Rooftop bar was very nice. Location very convenient.
- 3/5
The room was clean and we were allocated two queen beds as requested . The door staff and Mir reception staff were very pleasant. The roof top bar was good. The food and drinks up there were very good and the staff great, with a good atmosphere and terrace. The bathroom was tiny and very shabby. Seriously needs an upgrade or refurb. The hotel manager ( Sorcha) was extremely rude and dismissive.
- 5/5
everything nothing
- 2.5/5
The location Rooms are very old, bathroom really old and hated the bathroom door with glass, the drain in the bath tube was clogged, the sink also.
- 4/5
The restaurant was nice. The menu could be better.
- 5/5
Comfy, because we chose the more expensive bigger room! Love the wallpaper and carpet patterns. . . I enjoy funky, always.
- 4/5
This is the ideal location in NYC: steps from the subway, close to Central Park, near great restaurants and shopping, and a killer fruit stand across the street!
- 5/5
The curtain was broken and the nightstand lamp bulb socket was broken.
- 4/5
Great Location
- 3/5
Location was great! Staff was rude, hotel needs major updates. Our bathroom was the size of a closet! Would not stay here again.
- 1/5
There was tape in the shower, blood on the sheets.
- 4.5/5
The room was nice and clean. The bathroom had no room for getting ready and no space for counter top. Making it very difficult.
- 5/5
Loved the hotel. Very beautiful
- 4/5
Excelent
- 5/5
Exceptional
- 2.5/5
I love the location and the restaurants right next-door There was no ventilation in the bathroom. The bathroom looked extremely worn a lot of wear and tear due to the steam and the keys kept demagnetizing before even going to the room you knew you had to go get new keys.
- 5/5
Excellent!!! N/A
- 5/5
Room was shockingly small, but all the facilities worked just fine.
- 5/5
Favorite place to stay!
- 2/5
This property does not merit 4 stars. Its best quality is its location. The rooms are very dated, bathrooms are also very shabby and poorly ventilated. The A/C either didn’t run or ran at the decibel level of a car engine. The windows are not soundproof and the car honking is incessant.
- 3/5
I arrived at the hotel around 9, knowing that check in was at 3pm. I just wanted to check my bag and go tour the city, since I had never been to New York before. Normally when you arrive at the front desk you are greeted and welcomed, that didn't happen. When I asked about things to see in the area they were somewhat hesitant, I asked the dooman on my way out, and got the same response. When I returned from the opera the evening staff were so extremely nice and helpful. They are part of why I would come back to the hotel. The condition of the room was not what I expected, wall paper peeling, ceiling had water damage, the AC unit had rust, and the toilet kept making sounds. I have pictures if you want to see them. Despite some of the conditions the hotel has great charm, especially the lobby. The roof top restaurant and the Mexican restaurant were wonderful. I hope this helps to make future visits for others and myself better.
- 5/5
The lobby was beautifully decorated. The front desk staff were efficient and so nice. We stayed in a king room for 2 and while it was a smaller room compared to other hotels I felt it was a nice size for New York City.
- 4/5
Location and door staff is excellent Always something broken in room, this time it was shade. Also old school heat/cool in room
- 4/5
Very good
- 2/5
Air conditioning was not working in room, temperature 83f
- 5/5
Perfect location.
- 5/5
The proximity to midtown (times square) is very close, the area is safe at any hour of the day.across from the Lincoln center and central park, restaurants and coffee cafes are right outside the door,, however no room service.
- 1/5
the hotel has absolutely no continuity . once you check in, you’re on your own! a really really really unhelpful staff. mostly rude responses to very normal requests bartenders are rude pool attendants are rude front desk is rude THE HOTEL HAS NO TOLERANCE FOR ITS OWN GUESTS * It’s a big statement , but i think its accurate . Be prepared to fend for yourself
- 5/5
Great location with coffee and gelato a couple of steps away. Close to Central Park and great restaurants. Highly recommend !!
- 4/5
Overall, good experience. Rooms are in need of a refresh and maintenance. Staff polite and helpful.
- 3/5
Rooms were definitely dated had to change rooms AC was not working had other issues and felt like as a guest I was an inconvenience to them
- 4/5
Very good location
- 0.5/5
The location was convenient and within easy reach of many attractions and subway stations. The room was not particularly clean (found dust on furnitures), and the biggest issue was that it was located directly next to the elevator, resulting in constant noise throughout the day and night. We complained multiple times and were promised a room change twice, but no alternative room was ever provided. The front desk staff were generally unhelpful and did little beyond the bare minimum to address our concerns.
- 3.5/5
the location suit me perfectly. The property was tired and the view from the window was awful. The bathroom was very small
- 3/5
Staff are helpful but there were some inconveniences that I would want to know about if I were staying here. For example, the key cards consistently need to be reactivated (4x for us), you can’t control the temperature of your room, and there’s not water / ice stations.
- 4/5
The best thing about the Empire Hotel is the location. It is showing signs of age and there needs to be some updating of this property. Bathrooms were very small but housekeeping came every day. They gave free water that was needed and it was well staffed. The area has food and coffee nearby. Not a bad place to stay but will hope to see updates soon.
- 5/5
Clean and friendly
- 5/5
It was an overall great hotel experience. Clean and pretty quiet. Just be aware it is located right across from the Lincoln Center so there may be a lot of foot traffic in and out but overall it is a great place to stay.
- 5/5
It was ama amazing stay the staff were very nice and helpful.
- 4/5
Enjoyed the stay however the keys to the room wasn’t working very well and took many try’s to get into the room. However very clean and staff was nice and enjoyed the rooftop!
- 4.5/5
Excellent location, stylish lobby, rooftop with a view Price.. and for that price I would appreciate having a coffee machine in the room...
- 4.5/5
There were 3 large windows in the room. On one of them the pull down shade was missing.
- 5/5
The hotel staff was great. Check in was nice and smooth, and the staff in the lobby was very friendly every time we entered the building. The rooms were cleaned daily as well as the beddings.
- 4/5
This hotel is a clear 8 out 10. Amazing location. Great hotel roof bar. Comfortable bed and decent TV. Big, comfy lobby. No wait at front desk. Water pressure was very strong and hot water came quickly. A/C was very good but a little noisy. The decor is cool retro. All that said, it is an old hotel and in need of updates to keep up with the younger ones. There is paint peeling and some of the common areas (eg elevators) are a little dirty. But. None of that impacted our comfort or stay. Some people complained of no coffee maker but there is a Starbucks just steps from lobby. Would stay here again for sure, but would not seek it out.
- 5/5
Okay service for the price I think it could have been better
- 4/5
Great location, close to a lot of things including Central Park, rooftop restaurant and pool is pretty underrated in comparison to most places in the city. Love that they had lots of app versions for the tv and even casting was available. It’s a little thing that still a lot of hotels don’t offer.
- 5/5
It was perfect.
- 5/5
Great location
- 5/5
Nice
- 5/5
Great central location 2 restaurants and best gelato store next to hotel. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Nice to be close to everything but also far enough from time square to not be in it but a short walk to it!!!
- 4/5
Hotel centrally located; staff quite nice and helpful, except for one thing. Stayed on 11th floor and every morning staff began moving equipment before 6 am. Was there for 3 nights, spoke to staff the second day and there was no moving on the 3rd morning but they "forgot" and made alot of noise again the following morning. Staff provided significant price reduction after we spoke with them when checking out. But still...how has the idea that this is a bad daily practice not occurred to management?

Disappointing
- 5/5
Beautiful art deco hotel right near Lincoln Cenyre. Great staff. Thank u Ariel! Everything perfect.

The location was great The rooms are very damaged, old and worn. The bathrooms are tiny. You could barely get next to the sink.

It was so pretty!! I liked everything about the property
- 5/5
It's centrally located, very clean and the staff is very nice and helpful. I recommend it 100%
- 2/5
The front desk staff was horrible and not telling you the rooftop bar isnt with the hotel and u must pay separately not good
- 4/5
Slightly dated in some wallpaper was peeling, excellent water pressure - shower was amazing
- 2/5
Bed was extremely comfortable and the size of the room especially for a group/family.
- 5/5
Kudos to the bellman who returned the $600 I accidentally lost. Great to know there are still good, honest people in this world.
- 1/5
Room was very noisy small not even enough room for a chair and air con did not work, we had to pay another 400 dollars to attain a descent sized room
- 3.5/5
Excellent location for exploring NY. Our Deluxe room was a good size for NY but was in need of some TLC, looked quite tired. The staff were very helpful and efficient. Would we stay again.............Yes. Room was in need of attention; wardrobe was falling apart, the a/c unit was quite noisy at night.
- 2/5
Location was excellent. Room was ridiculously small And hard to walk around any obstacles Paint peeling, mold on bathroom door, filthy window in room.
- 4/5
No valet/on-site parking due to a street fair or parade. I wish they had informed guests prior. Options available were much more expensive and inconvenient.
- 3/5
Elevator slow and getting up to terrace/ pool stairs felt hazardous, it is an old building
- 5/5
Great location and staff!
- 4/5
Clean and well maintained. Nothing to complain about.
- 4/5
Little issue with the shower in my room, but otherwise a very nice and comfortable stay.
- 4/5
I pulled up my reservation invoice and suddenly she found everything. What a mess plus she was rude.
- 4/5
Very good
- 5/5
Quiet, convenient and great staff. Rooftop bar a bonus plus a pool. Definitely worth considering this.
- 1/5
It was by far the worst hotel room I have ever stayed at. Both windows faced a sizeable, extremely ugly, dingy air shaft with large, rusty mechanical devices, probably air conditioners. They were at our level, on the first floor, and not even a bit of sky was visible to counteract the ugliness. The view was bad enough; what was much more problematic was the noise coming from that equipment. It was loud and constant throughout the day and the night. There was no letup. Occasionally, the tone changed but it never stopped. We would have asked for a room change right then, but were already late for dinner and a concert, the lobby was filled with people waiting to check in, and we foolishly assumed the noise would abate later in the evening. To make matters worse, I spoke to the manager in the morning about how awful the room was. He acknowledged that he knew we were repeat customers, and the room was undesirable but said the hotel was sold out. (We made this reservation about 10 days in advance.) No one should be given this room, #111. It would have been far better to have been told there were no rooms available so that we would have stayed elsewhere than spend a night in that room. I guess the hotel would rather lose a guest than a room fee.
- 5/5
Location, decor, lobby, rooftop, soundproofing, staff help - all were excellent. Hot water takes along time but just be patient. Limited counter space in bathroom. I stayed in a superior King room which had ample space for two people and luggage. No coffeemaker in room or complimentary coffee in lobby but two coffee shops right next to entrance. Hotel does have an electric hot water maker if you ask. Overall an excellent place to stay for feeling safe ( Staff were very attentive and helpful) in the Central Park/ Lincoln Center area. Discounted parking offered by Hotel just a couple blocks away. Would definitely stay there again.
- 4/5
Staff were really nice. Room was clean, small but typical of New York rooms and the bar was nice. Would stay again
- 4/5
Muy bien todo
- 4/5
I love the location, but I HATE the door locks.
- 2/5
We’ve stayed several times due to location but will not stay again as what you get for the price is not worth it at all.
- 4/5
Very good
- 5/5
Very modern, got a room upgrade as the original room wasn’t great View of certain rooms
- 3/5
Great location on the upper west side. Food was great and staff were really helpful. Dated decor and hardly any storage in the room. No fan in the bathroom and no amenities in the room other than a fridge and safe. Gym was fairly average with limited equipment, amenities and room to move. On the whole it was a good experience.
- 5/5
Staff were very nice but they did not mention a bar or anything in the area. That would have been helpful
- 3/5
Water took a long time to get hot. Shower was poorly designed. Ended up getting the small bathroom very wet. No coffee at all. Only food was on the roof deck and was very expensive. Resort fee added to price. The beds were comfortable.
- 3/5
Outdated hotel. Peeling wallpaper. No coffee or tea available in the room or room service. Called desk multiple times with no answer. Great location.
- 3/5
The hotel is in a perfect location near the Opera and theatre attractions around Lincoln Square. Unfortunately the AC in our room was broken, and the sink was missing a plug to keep objects like contact lenses and rings from falling into the P Trap. Sadly, our window was so dirty on the outside marring our view. Also getting coffee in the morning required us to step outsude in the rain to Starbucks. (No coffee or snacks are available inside the hotel.)
- 1/5
Disgusting room with peeling wallpaper, bloodstained bedsheets, a thick layer of dust everywhere, smudged body lotion on the bed headrest, old carpet, and a gross bathroom shower curtain. STAY AWAY!
- 3/5
The location is very good, walking distance to Central Park, Time Square and 5th avenue shopping. On arrival I was not allocated the room I paid for. It took a long firm conversation with the receptionist until they finally agreed to allocate me the correct room, but they didn’t want to and they offered no compensation. It wasn’t available until the next day though, which affected a whole day of my short stay.
- 2/5
Rooms were super run down. Drinks were watery and expensive. Would never go again.
- 2/5
I stayed here for one night for my birthday just this past weekend. I was really excited as I am a HUGE fan of Gossip Girl and if you know, you know. However, I was genuinely really disappointed. One being that the floor was the floor so gross as if it hasn’t been vacuumed in weeks - and not only the floors but the shelves and the whole room entirely. The wallpaper was peeling off on all the walls, the curtain was broken so we couldn’t open the blinds, all the furniture in the room was ripped and very very outdated. Other than the rooms, the rest of the hotel was beautiful and definitely up to date which is why I didn’t expect the rooms to look the way they did. Would not stay here again.
- 4/5
Location was great! Close to Lincoln Center and Central Park The wife had trouble getting hot water for showers, I had no real issue except working faucet to right position

The A/C is the room didn’t function properly and was pretty warm. However, I didn’t alert anyone of this since we were only staying for one evening. The hotel is a bit outdated and is in need of a refresh. The staff were kind and helpful. The check in/out process was quick. Valet parking was offered for $80. Overall I was pleased and would stay there again.
- 2.5/5
The rooftop restaurant and the Mexican restaurant bar. Location to venue The style is dated and old. The room rug was tattered. My bed squeaked every time I turned. The bathroom was tiny. We had 3 people and had No accommodations for the third person. Bedding was finally brought to the room at 12:30! There were only towels for 2.

- 5/5
The property was very nice and swanky right in the middle of West side Manhattan. Walking distance from shops, eateries, and entertainment, as well as subway stations and bus stops! I made the mistake of Ubering everywhere the first two days before I found out how affordable and amazing the New York City public transportation system is! Our hotel was so accessible from everywhere in the city and surrounding Burroughs. Central Park, Time Square, Lower Manhattan, all just a very short walk or ride away!
- 4/5
Once elegant now a popular spot, the hotel offers a great rooftop bar, a sun deck and pool for guests, a nice restaurant, an adequate workout room and lovely public areas with music, seating and areas for conversation or relaxing. The guest rooms are New York small, with furnishings decades old, pealing wallpaper, strangely set up sinks with the facet too close to the basin so they spray up, showers that get the floor wet and limited room amenities - no coffee makers.
- 5/5
The hotel is so beautiful, friendly and the food was so good

- 1/5
Hotel is in disrepair and beds are uncomfortable. When showed the front desk that I was staying there for a week and that there was no way to access the bathroom sink due to a pillar right in front of it they moved me but reluctantly. The sound proofing is also bad. Both weekends I was there I tried to get food on the roof and told I needed to wait several hours for reservations due to private events. They should have at least some tables opened for paying hotel guests.
- 4/5
Staff at the hotel were great, 5 stars there. The hotel room was decent, but the bed had an older mattress for sure and the curtains for total privacy wouldn't exactly stay closed because the HVAC unit in the room blew air right on them and you'll wake up with a 4-5" opening every morning where people can see right into your room.
- 3.5/5
Good
- 3/5
Our AC didn’t work the first night. They did repair it pretty promptly, but we ended up having to change rooms and they gave us a small credit for that inconvenience. Everything was relatively clean, but it is an older hotel with dark carpet. I kept my socks on. The bathroom was very clean. I did see a roach in the middle of the night in the bathroom. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. It’s a good location. I booked it because of the rooftop pool which ended up not being open because it doesn’t open till after Memorial Day a real bummer since we had 95° days the week before Memorial Day. This was not well advertised and I would not have stayed there had I known this. This was a package deal through Expedia, which turned out to be pretty good as it was close to where I needed to be. Not sure I would stay there again though.
- 3/5
The rest is just OK.
- 4/5
Good location in Lincoln Square. Good surrounding area. Nice staff.
- 3/5
TIP: Request a high floor, and insist on it. Floors 1 - 3 are awful - noisy, dark and odd-numbered rooms only offer a view of the HVAC system with no sky to be seen. In-room air conditioner/heaters are tricky to set and re-set, and are also very loud - bring earplugs. And, there are not nearly enough lights/lamps in the rooms - VERY dark and hard to see in the rooms!

room was clean and staff was exceptional.

I've stayed at this hotel 9 or 10 times. You know going in that the rooms are small (NYC), but the rooftop bar/restaurant and location make it my favorite place to stay. This past visit was very disappointing. The room had no closet. There were three pegs for hanging your clothes. Yes, pegs. One peg held the ironing board. The middle peg was missing. So, really there was one peg. I tried to call the front desk, but the phone/line wasn't working. I tried to call housekeeping. Again, the phone/line wasn't working soI sent an e-mail. I just wanted a hanger to hang my dress for my daughter's graduation. I went downstairs and spoke to a manger. to ask for a discount and a hanger. She said since I booked with a third party there was nothing she could do except waive the daily charges. . She asked if she could send engineering up. I said sure. Again, I just wanted a hanger. The maintenance man came to the room, spent two seconds looking at the missing peg and said he would send housekeeping up with a hanger. I ended up draping my dress on the back of the chair. The nonchalant attitude was really disappointing. Upon check out, I asked if none of the rooms had closets or places to actually hang your clothes on a hanger. She seemed to truly not know. She told me that one guest had asked for 21 hangers, and that was probably why I couldn't get a hanger. Asking for a clothes hanger seems reasonable in a $400/night hotel. Next time I'll stay at the Hilton Midtown.

Great location, helpful staff but our room was quite dark (interior room) and tired.

- AC was off on entering the room. Turned it on and the unit started making a really loud noise. This was something that the hotel staff must have known about since it was about 630pm - engineer came to fix it. AC started to work and temperature fell to 82. However, after about 10 minutes noise restarted and AC no longer working - other guests had the same issue Staff werent very helpful. The hotel was full so other rooms weren’t available. After about 3 hrs we switched to a different hotel and did end up getting a full refund. One staff member was helpful (Sorsha) the rest were treating the situation as an inconvenience to them.

The staff was very nice, the location is excellent but the hotel and room needs renovations
- 4/5
Good location, easy access to subway. The hotel rooms need some tlc, one of our shades was broken, windows were dirty. Outdated and old.
- 4/5
The Empire has a stellar location near Columbus Circle and the Lincoln Center for ballet, opera and jazz at the Lincoln Center and the staff id very good and friendly. However it needs a serious infusion of cash to do some very deferred maintenance. The room we were in which was supposedly deluxe had frayed carpets, torn wallpaper and sub par bathroom facilities. I am never a proponent of corporations taking over mom and pop or private businesses but this hotel needs to be saved by a Marriott or Hilton and get a complete overhaul. It's a shame to let a location like this not live to it's full potential.

The bed was large and comfortable. You didn't ask about the shower, but it was a disaster. Couldn't get hot water. The restaurant was excellent for breakfast. Food and service were really good and not wildly expensive. Storage for clothing. Hooks lower for towels in bathroom. Hot water in shower.

Location Upon check-in the awkward loud disgruntled guest next to us. Not having amenities such as body wash for 3 days and house keeping not coming daily . Ac unit breaking and blowing hot air into the room, the cleanliness being less than subpar including mold in both rooms. The ripped stained furniture and walls was also a turn off.

Location was excellent. Staff was very friendly. The lobby area and rooftop bar were beautiful. Unfortunately, our room was terribly dated and had signs of wear throughout. The $150 damage fee that was assessed at check-in seemed ridiculous considering the state of the room. Unfortunately, our room was terribly dated and had signs of wear throughout. Wear and tear Need to renovate Would choose a different hotel next time
- 4/5
The location of this hotel is amazing, no question—but it’s a little rough around the edges (e.g., rust spot in the tub, peeling wallpaper, broken shade, broken drawer in nightstand). Also, these rooms are made for TALL people. I’m on the shorter side (5 ft, 4 in.), and there were some things (like the closet) that were a bit challenging. The fitness center is fine, but they have two large televisions with no remote, which was a bummer. But the location is really quite fabulous.

I looked at reviews before staying here. Very disappointing!! The AC didn’t work, we were sweating all night in the room. No amenities at the hotel. Very base level accommodation. I was shocked and disappointed by the hotel I booked! Do not believe the reviews. I’d never stay here again
- 5/5
Loved the price point on such short notice
- 5/5
Ideal location close to Columbus Circle.
- 1/5
The room is old and in desperate need of revamping. The bathtub dripped the whole time maintenance never checked. We needed new keys everyday
- 2/5
This hotel needs a total overhaul! One cannot open the blinds so room is always dark. Rusty mirror in bathroom, cabinet doors do not close. No phone in the room so had to go to front desk to talk to the staff. Horrible experience. 2-3 stars at best and should be charged accordingly. They have a nice looking lobby but the rooms are really bad.
- 5/5
The Empire is my favorite hotel in New York. It's a grand dame, so not new and spiffy, but the rooms are well-maintained and I find the bedding terric. In New York, the Empire is a bargain, but it's so much more. The location is outstanding at Lincoln Center surrounded by restaurants and cultural institutions, and it's on the #1 subway. Taxis and Ubers also very easily available. I don't worry about not having a coffee maker in the room. There is a Starbucks a few steps from the front door; a great bakery (Breads) across the street (Broadway), and additional options up and down Broadway. People, you're in New York! I love the free bottles of water. Pasquale at the front desk has been especially kind, but all the front desk staff and doormen seem extremely helpful.
- 3/5
The hotel is showing signs of wear and neglect. It clearly underwent a facelift a few past, the materials used and installed were not designed to last. Small items were also unaddressed, like we did not have enough towels. In the end it was expensive for the conditions. The location is great.
- 4/5
I had a girder in my bathroom which I loved. Hilarious really Bed was a bit hard. No shower caps but I had one sent up

Historic Hotel. The location is fabulous, right next to the Lincoln Square and a few blocks from Broadway, 5th Avenue and Central Park. Wonderful top floor bar with good food and drinks, incredible views over Manhattan, specially by night. The hotel needs some TLC. The carpets look faded, old and worn out, plus they give the impression of being dirty. The furniture in the room is worn out and the bathroom looks outdated. Also the common spaces need updating, the elevators are in need of maintenance.

No chairs in room, no desk to do work on, room way too small, wallpaper unsightly. No microwave to use in the hotel. Staff was friendly.
- 1/5
My room was on the first floor. Directly outside my window, looking out onto a small airshaft, was a collection of HVAC turbines constantly roaring. Like, mere feet away. I instantly asked to be moved, but the hotel was full. Was up til 4am the first night, got earplugs for the second night. Seriously, this should not be a hotel room at all, let alone in a supposed four star hotel. It should be an office or storage. And the staff were stone faced. Yes the hotel was full but there are still things you can do--a comped cocktail or discount in the restaurant, a reduced fee, anything to acknowledge that this was a ludicrous room to be paying 800 dollars for two nights in. The room itself was bare and bleak--and of course there was no sunlight at all, just that airshaft and the roar of the turbines. Left feeling totally snookered.
- 2/5
Water damage in bathroom and tiles missing. Shower handle broken, but I was able to get hot water. Hotel bed frame dusty/dirty. Hotel does not have restaurant or bar. It has a Mexican restaurant entrance on second floor. Lobby staff could not print out my bill until I checked out. I was charged more than what I booked on Expedia. Overall the hotel needs renovation, and I have no reason to stay there again.

This is a busy, well located hotel near to Lincoln Center and Columbus Circle. But the hotel took 40 minutes to check in, the room was grubby and the blinds had fallen down on one of the windows which couldn’t be fixed until the next day and then it only went up halfway. On two nights I went to the bathroom to find a couple of cockroaches in the sink. There is no bar or restaurant but fortunately there are plenty nearby. Also the tv didn’t work. Not great and I stay in NYC regularly. I won’t be returning.
- 3/5
The price was right but the rooms are small (typical for NYC) and very, very old. The bathroom/shower are also not great. The hotel needs an update badly, especially the rugs, but then it would probably be less affordable. The location is great and very convenient!

Clean and comfortable beds There was construction going on that was completely disruptive. My daughter is a college student who moved out earlier during the prior week. All in all, except for the bathroom, it was a perfect hotel and perfectly situated for my stay. Some updating of the bathrooms could make it a 4 star hotel.

The worst, I couldn’t even stay the first night.
- 3/5
Have stayed at the empire many times after its renovation but it has probably been 10 years since I last stayed there. What was once the place to be has now been let fall apart. The aircon heats when it’s supposed to cool. No more amenities in the rooms. Dust everywhere. Roll up blinds do not roll up. Elevators are incredibly dirty - carpet need steam cleaning. Bathroom has no vents so the moisture has caused years of damage to the walls. Such a shame to have let the property end up this way. It’s a wonderful location, sad to see the lobby bar closed down - it really used to be so bustling. Do not recommend. Most of the staff we very pleasant and helpful.
- 5/5
We enjoyed our stay at The Empire. It felt like you were stepping back in time when you entered the beautiful art deco lobby with music playing from the ‘30’s and ‘40’s. The room was nicely decorated in a mid-century modern decor and was very clean. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the location was great. Lincoln Center was across the street, Central Park was a couple of blocks away, and there were several good restaurants at the hotel and very near it. We highly recommend The Empire to anyone looking for a hotel on the upper west side.

I booked a stay at the Empire Hotel for my birthday and upgraded the day before arrival—directly through the hotel—to a Superior One-Bedroom Double Suite. I was charged $1,563.03 for this upgrade and was explicitly told everything was confirmed. When we arrived, we were given a standard room instead of the suite I paid for. No warning, no explanation—just the wrong room. When I went to the front desk, staff acknowledged that I had been charged for the suite and that it was noted on my reservation, yet still told me there was “nothing they could do” because no suites were available. I asked multiple times to speak to a manager, and the manager refused to come out and speak with me. Everything was relayed through staff, which was incredibly dismissive and unprofessional. What’s even worse is that there was no attempt to proactively correct the situation. If I hadn’t gone back downstairs to question it, they seemingly would have been perfectly willing to keep the full $1,500+ for a room I never received. Instead of resolving the issue, I was told to come back the next day to find out how much I would be refunded—after already having my birthday night completely ruined. The room we were given wasn’t even in good condition. There were visible maintenance issues, including a loose thermostat and peeling wallpaper, which made the situation feel even more terrible
- 4/5
Overall, I had a good stay. I understand the building is old, but there were things that are basic maintenance that needed to be done. Example, paint chipping off the doors and moulding, the ceiling above the shower was bubbling from the moisture, and there's no fan/vent in the bathroom. The heater did not work, it was blowing out cold air and actually dropped the temperature of the room, thankfully we had warmer weather. It was overall very clean, and the sheets and towels were fresh and clean. I only stayed one night, and it was good enough for that, if I was staying longer, I definitely would have asked for the heat to be addressed. The staff was very nice and check in was very smooth.

- 1/5
Poor room conditions that ended up us having no sleep all night
- 2/5
I changed rooms and then left early. The rooms are in horrible condition and all or most of the metal surfaces in the bathroom are rusty. The carpeting has runs in it and the room had a random Ironing board leaning against the wall. I couldn't control the temperature in the room housekeeping had to come up and turn it off entirely. Very disappointing.
- 2/5
Not a clean hotel. Staff seem tired. Location is good.
- 3/5
Everything but the rooms were very good. Rusted heat/ac unit, rusted bathroom door. Very old windows. Small bathroom, old and beat up vanity, and sink small water bounces out.

Great location for Fordham University Lincoln Center events!
- 3/5
Service on the rooftop was not good. Hostesses were rude and would not let me sit outside. Reservation signs on all tables yet they didn't have anyone showing up until 2 hours later. I just wanted to grab a quick drink before my dinner. I left and went somewhere else. Rooftop service, couldn't open the shade in my room. Dirty spoon on the floor near my bed.

- 5/5
Exceptionally clean, highly professional and friendly staff, art deco vibe. I stay here every time I have tickets anywhere in Lincoln Square, and it's fantastic. You won't find ice or vending machines but with great restaurants and a Starbucks right there, you'll get whatever you desire with little effort.

- 3/5
Strong smell in hallways (cleaning products). Wallpaper is peeling. Could use reno. Great location for events at Lincoln Center. Lobby and entrance get crowded and lines can be long to check in. Staff was very pleasant and helpful.
- 5/5
Room itself was clean and a good size for a NYC hotel. There was no closet to put clothes which was a bummer but we managed to live in the chaos for a short while. I would definitely return to Empire to explore this part of the city more.
- 1.5/5
Location First room was at the end of a hallway that was not lit, other room offered had shower that would not stop running. Was advised that there were no other options, at first. Then after a second maintenance check another room was then available for my family and I to stay.
- 4/5
Clean, friendly, great location, sorry I didn’t try the bar. Next time I hope.
- 5/5
Room was very warm because the air conditioner was not working and I asked the maintenance staff if they could just open my window because it was too heavy for me to lift and no one ever showed up. Other than that concierge was wonderful and I just love the location.
- 4/5
Room was ok! Not amazing, but fine for a night in the city. Clean, just needs some TLC. Lobby was beautiful. We have a daughter, It was so nice to get gelato/Starbucks (both right next door) and eat it in the warm pretty lobby. The restaurant upstairs was really good and reasonably price for NY. Nice to cut through Central Park and walk right up to Time Square. Even though we book through Expedia, there was still a $22 charge for the hotel and the valet was $81. I would definitely come back.
- 3/5
no amenities to speak of. No restaurant, no bar, only two thin towels in bathroom, no extra blanket or robes in closet. No coffeemaker.
- 5/5
The staff were amazing !
- 4/5
Very nice stay, and staff was great. I forgot to report it, but the detachable shower sprayer in room 122 had a leak in the hose. We didn't use amenities.
- 3/5
The blinds in my room did not work and for the first two nights I had no WiFi.
- 4/5
Location to London Center is perfect. Pool was not open--not until May was the message. What is "resort fee" if not the pool? I stay here when going to Lincoln Center unless price is crazy high.
- 5/5
Nice place. Little old but nice.
- 3/5
But, I really don’t like much else. The staff was at best ok. We weren’t told anything about the property on arrival. We weren’t asked how the stay was when we checked out. There was no coffee in the room nor did they have Coffee in the lobby. The room was like an ocular migraine, patterns everywhere… carpet, walls, curtain. The room was very dark. I tried to call housekeeping for an item and our telephone didn’t work. Weird room and bathroom layout. It was clean and the shower was good. There you have it.
- 5/5
perfect locations and wonderful hotel.
- 2/5
My air conditioner was stuck on heat and room was stifling the entire time despite multiple maintenance attempts. Hot water was no consistent and the shower would not drain properly.
- 5/5
Property is somewhat dated but location is great.
- 5/5
The staff was super helpful!
- 1/5
The staff is rude and don’t care and don’t even check If they have aged or no or ketchup or no or even anything you ask for Everybody they are I say the other department go for it Very busy and all tourists come mid s hotel to enjoy in The pool desk was closed although given on the app and I thought that there is pool Even if it’s raining next day it was sunny why they don’t open it !! Or even let us sit on the chairs beside it And I didn’t see even coffe machine That was regret and room smaller than my restroom and view is terrible
- 2/5
The bathtub was leaking and the curtain rod fell off the ceiling. Good location though.
- 2/5
The only best thing about this place was location. Everything else was under two stars. It was dirty, dated and noisy. The pool was not in service and the roof top bar was not accessible through existing elevator so you had to go down to lobby to take a different elevators. Wall paper in the room was peeling off and carpet/rug was so dusty old and dirty that it gives an impression of an estate sale. Lamp in the room wasn’t turning on and it took over 5 hours for the maintenance to bring in the replacement. The air quality was very bad with their blow A/C- most likely never cleaned out the filters. Not worth it.
- 4/5
The facilities are beyond dated, peeling paint, clipped and torn furniture in our room. The location was convenient. Definitely a mixed bag.
- 2/5
This hotel is in a wonderful location, but the rooms are horrible. I guess that’s just New York but for $350 a night you would expect a nicer room. Bed was hard, pillows small, bathroom is outdated w/ shower curtain, mismatched caulking, rusted door jamb. Way overdue for a major renovation.
- 1/5
Rooftop bar and location are awesome to be fair. There are 500 other hotels - choose one of those.
- 3/5
“Unfortunately, the property didn’t match what was shown in the photos. It felt a bit run down, and the rooms were not as clean as expected. The location was convenient for getting around, which was a plus, but overall, I wouldn’t choose to stay here again.”
- 3/5
Great location, steps from Lincoln Center. Short walk to Columbus Circle in Central Park.
- 5/5
This is my go to spot when I need to stay for a night or two in New York City for work events. They usually have very good pricing. The bed is clean. The shower and bathroom is clean. It’s not in the best condition but I feel comfortable there it’s also positioned in a great location on 63rd and Broadway right across from Lincoln Center. If you’re visiting and have a budget this is a good choice.
- 2/5
Nice helpful staff but the room was dirty, many things didn’t work and the rooftop was closed. It was a lot to spend for a gross room.
- 3/5
We were disappointed with the room allocated to us, as the wallpaper was peeling of the walls, there was huge crack in the shower tray and the carpet was torn and taped. We asked for another room, which we got and it was much better. The staff were really great about it and everything else. It's a pity the bar in the lobby area is not open now as it was when we visited a few years ago. It's a good hotel, but needs to be brought up to a better standard.
- 3/5
The sink was stylish, but not practical. The bed does need to be replaced. All in all, I had a good stay.
- 3/5
Hotel is in a lovely location. Lobby and the rooftop bar are beautiful. The staff was very efficient and friendly. The room, however, was very small and shabby. Things like peeling paint and wallpaper took away from the experience.
- 3/5
The property is old, and need to update.
- 5/5
Our room was what we expected for a NYC hotel room in terms of size. The bathroom is pretty small, but it was clean. Our room was on the 10th floor, and you could hear the people on the streets and sirens a little more, but we were able to adjust to the noise and sleep comfortably on the beds. The hotel elevators sounded a little questionable at times due to the noises they made. We noticed there were usually 2-3 security personnel at the hotel entrance each evening, which made us feel safer. The staff that we spoke to were very friendly! One of the housekeeping staff members always greeted us in the hall each morning, and I really wish I had gotten her name to credit her for how kind she was to us. We loved the 1940's vibe that you get when you walk into the hotel lobby. They played big band music, and you felt as if you were transported back in time. There are some awesome restaurants right around the hotel and an amazing Gelato shop right next door. We would stay here again.
- 5/5
no bar, no parking
- 5/5
Saw mouse at the restaurant area.
- 4/5
The hotel is very centrally located and the staff are very nice, helpful and great. We asked for a small fridge, which they provided for free, but it don’t really work. We didn’t ask them to fix it, we just then used cooler bags and ice. The restaurant downstairs - Rosa Mexicano - has very tasty food but isn’t very accommodating to kids during mealtime rushes.
- 4/5
The staff was very kind and helpful. The property needed some TLC. The wallpaper on our floor was less than sensory-friendly but the staff says the renovations are happening. It’s a very old building and the ceiling leaks and running toilet are a part of that. I shared the list of repairs immediately needed with the staff when I checked out. The location was great, a few blocks from the Hop On Hop Off bus stop. Once it's fully renovated, the normal-New York, excessive room rate will be a great deal to stay in this bit-of-history property.
- 1/5
The room was very dirty. There was hair in the corners of the bathroom and sticky smudges all over the desk. It looked like oil or jelly of some kind that never got wiped up. The carpets needed cleaning, so don’t walk barefoot on them. The staff were very nice.
- 3/5
The location is absolutely fabulous and that’s why we chose it.

Great location to the Lincoln Center. The property condition is pretty rough and neglected. Elevators need more atte tion on a daily basis as they were dirty our whole 4 night stay. The bathroom in our room was horrendous. Floor flooded and it looks like a gas station facility.
- 5/5
The room was quite comfortable, the hotel staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. It was close to the subway at Lincoln Center and easy to hail a cab. Will definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Excellent as always. Staff are very helpful and polite. Rooms are always spotlessly clean and the location is second to none !
- 3/5
Needs updating
- 3/5
The check-in experience was poor. Incredibly unprofessional and rude.
- 3/5
Very convenient location; great restaurants in and next to the hotel; lovely rooftop terrace; comfortable beds, ample hot water. We were on the 11th/top floor; the heating system was not working well - we were too hot. Also the hotel systems (elevator, heating) are quite noisy.
- 5/5
They gave me a fine room!
- 5/5
Thank you
- 5/5
Clean room and friendly staff
- 1/5
Very bad and a lot of
- 3/5
Room was missing soap
- 3/5
Our water took forever to heat up in both the shower and the sink. Weird! I mean it took a good over 5 mins to heat up. On the flip side, the room was insufferably hot when we first arrived. We turned off one of the air conditioners and for 3-1/2 days that heat kept coming out of that unit even though we UNPLUGGED it from the wall and had the stop and cold buttons pressed and turned to cold. The other unit was cool so we had that going. The whole thing was bizarre. Also, there is NOWHERE in the room that tells you after you turn on the tv that you have to press 4 to get the channels! We asked the front desk and they told us. Also, the tv guide to the channels was inconspicuously found under the glass of the bedside table! I couldn’t believe all these issues. They are all preventable and hope they become addressed.
- 5/5
Friendly staff! Stay here often
- 4/5
Front desk staff was very helpful.
- 4/5
Room itself was in need of some paint and maintenance, but the hotel itself is lovely. Incredible rooftop, and great staff all around.
- 3/5
Staff is incredible! But that is were there luxury ends. From what I am told though this hotel room, the deluxe double "queen" was very big for new York. The toilet moved when you sat down though. The rooftop bar is very nice and I'm sure it's even better in the summer. The pillows... I cannot get over how bad the blankets and pillows are. The person I stayed with was surprised by the mini fridge, apparently that is not common in most NY hotel rooms. There is no coffee machine but the Starbucks is literally right there. I'm giving three stars because it was neither great nor terrible. Except the staff, the staff was excellent!
- 1/5
Hasn't been updated since 1987. For its location, should be much better, especially for the price.
- 5/5
My room was amazing clean, the staff professional and courteous and the hotel toasty warm during the blizzard.
- 5/5
Friendly staff! Some trouble w cold water in the shower in the evening but overall great stay!
- 4/5
No microwave and ice machine broken
- 4/5
Keenan at front desk very helpful
- 4/5
Amazing location right across from Lincoln Center, and very good price by NYC standards. They're in the process of doing some room upgrades that should add further value.
- 3/5
Rooms are old and tired. Bathroom needed a lot of work. Flooring in the bathroom was moving and the mirror was rusted. All in all good enough to get a night's rest after taking on the city.
- 1/5
Rooms are 100% outdated. The bathtub faucet in my room would not shut off. The water ran continuously. Mgmt could not move me until the next night. The location is decent at Columbus Circle. The lobby makes you believe your room will be modern and updated. Not the case.
- 5/5
The staff was amazing! We had to extend our stay because of a blizzard. They are very helpful and accommodating.
- 4/5
The room was clean and the staff was nice.
- 1/5
Wouldn’t recommend staying here hotel totally needs a renovation and more amenities. A perfect location in the city totally wasted on this place.
- 5/5
Staff was he eat! Bellman perfect service.
- 4/5
Location is excellent.
- 4/5
Nice location
- 1/5
Our thermostat was stuck on 85 degrees and no one was able to assist us at the hotel. We were told there were no rooms for us to move into until halfway through our visit. The experience was absolutely miserable. The hotel then said they would waive the resort fee to make up for the thermostat difficulties however they lied and charged me an additional $91.56 at the end of my stay. The Empire hotel is a total scam.
- 5/5
The room was perfect and the staff was polite, friendly, and helpful. We are sure to return to this wonderful hotel.
- 4/5
Great
- 3/5
A little dirty Missing bellhop No tv
- 1/5
terrible customer service is slow, key card barely worked, and the thermostat is broken! Terrible room for $350+ a night 👎👎👎👎! Like a motel 6 or Red Roof
- 5/5
Staff was friendly, even allowed me and my toddler to check in early when we arrived. Room was clean. Shower had very strong water pressure - always a plus! Bathroom door veneer was peeling off, but this seems to be the case in many NYC hotels due to lack of vent fans in NYC bathrooms. Stayed here before and would stay here again.
- 3/5
People were very nice. However, wifi was down for three days, showerhead was drilling, roof top was locked... just a few issues made it annoying...
- 5/5
What a nice hotel discovery for me. I really enjoyed my stay here. Comfortable room. Quiet. Directly across the street from the MET Opera. I usually stay in Times Square- but this hotel got me to explore the West Side, still within walking distance of Times Square to go to Broadway every night. Easy check in- staff is very friendly.
- 5/5
Great hotel. Excellent staff
- 5/5
Staff went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was a fabulous experience! Such a great location, both to Lincoln Center and the Columbus Circle train & Central Park. We will be back!
- 1/5
Too hot
- 4/5
Incredible location, wonderful view from the room, the clever decorating.
- 4/5
Friendly staff. Hotel is a bit dated, rooms could use a refresh and room was noisy
- 5/5
Clean, staff was helpful, polite.
- 4/5
Lovely and unique vibe in lobby. Rooms are small and a bit too warm! Could definitely use an interior design update! But perfect location!
- 5/5
Room was very clean and well kept.
- 5/5
It was clean it just needs a remodeling
- 5/5
Yes
- 4/5
The staff was amazing. Everything very clean. The thermostat didn’t work and the room stayed at 74° which was hot and sweaty for us. The bathroom is very small. The door opens into the toilet. The paint was pealing off of the back of the bathroom door. The lighting in the room was very dim to get ready and the bathroom vanity was very small.
- 2/5
No vent in bath room. The conditioner is too noisy for sleeping. You have to use earplugs to sleep.
- 2/5
There’s a deck cut roach in my shower thus I did not want to use it. Yes, I could’ve cleaned it out, but the principal alone was abominable and check-in was a bad process.
- 5/5
Loved the water bottles, room was nice, nice to receive mail there etc. great location and view!
- 5/5
Clean room, staff were helpful, and location was unmatched!
- 5/5
Staff was friendly and attentive. The lobby is classic, like walking into a vintage movie. Everything puts out that early century vibe in a good way. Rooms are clean and functional but the vibe, location and amazing staff are why you want to stay here
- 4/5
My stay was good. TV remote did not work with TV in room.
- 5/5
The room was so clean the room was equipped with everything that you needed for your stay. The staff are so kind and attentive.. I recommend staying here 10 out of 10 and if you love, gossip girl, you get the full gossip girl experience
- 5/5
Amazing
- 1/5
I found out during check-in that my room had been canceled at the day prior due to an issue with payment. Despite showing the hotel manager, all the correspondence showing that I still had a booked room, and a pending charge on my credit card for that room, they still told me there was nothing they could do. They had given my room away. I then had to find another hotel room last minute that cost me 3x the amount of money.
- 3/5
Staff was very nice. Room wasn’t great. The bathroom sink had 2 settings. Barely on and spraying everywhere. The shower was impossible to figure out and turn off. The window was broken. Overall the hotel was run down. But it was clean.
- 2/5
Room was old and outdated. There was dust by the night stand. The shower tile was cracked. Took 9 minutes to run the water to get hot water. Body wash was empty. Requested a king room and it was a queen bed.
- 5/5
Great service! Nice location
- 4/5
Room was clean and staff was great. But the room did feel cold, I don’t blame it as the wind was blowing. I wish the heater would function better
- 3/5
Very courteous staff BUT no in room coffee or any other beverage except warm bottles of water from the front desk. Heating system weak and NOISY. Shower weak and slow to warm. No provisions made to make powering portable/mobile devices. Everything barebones though I booked an upgraded/more expensive room. Received a view of heating ducts, not Tully Hall/Lincoln Center. OTOH, the elevators did work quite well.
- 1/5
Never got my $150.00 incidental deposit back to my CC
- 5/5
Great location, nice cozy hotel, & Free unlimited water bottles for the entire stay
- 3/5
Room was very small and you had to shut the door to use the bathroom because the door opened to the middle of the toilet. The internet was out for 90% of the workday on Wednesday and we were forced to leave the hotel to find a WiFi connection. Calls to front desk and housekeeping went unanswered. However, the location of the hotel is perfect for catching the subway or easily finding a restaurant.
- 5/5
Yes
- 4/5
Staff was very friendly and attentive. Room was very clean. However the air conditioner/ heater did make odd “knocking” noises on and off. Everything was nice but just seemed a little outdated. Rooftop bar was very nice and was the best part. Wish the downstairs bar was open also.
- 4/5
Clean room, nice views, great location, wonderful staff!
- 5/5
The staff was great especially the gentlemen at the door. The room was clean and comfortable. I would definitely stay here again.
- 4/5
Room was a good size. Shower was nice. No amenities, which was disappointing. There used to be a Keurig cofee and hot water maker.
- 2/5
Room was rough - hole in carpet, gum on carpet, dirty baseboards, top of desk thingy was dirty. Pain cracked on radiator. I had to ask at the desk both times I accessed the fitness center - the elevator was turned off and the door was locked and key entry didn't work.
- 2/5
Upon check-in we were offered a free room upgrade that we accepted. At about 2:30 am we were abruptly awoken to pounding at our door with a forceful attempt to break in. After asking who was there, we were told that it was the night management and that we had no reservation for the assigned room and to please open the door. We did not open the door due to fear of not knowing if it was hotel staff or unknowns attempting to break in. After calling down to reception and be putting on hold due to "an issue" we were assured that it was management which prompted us to open the door only to be berated for not doing so sooner. No time during this conversation was there an apology by this person for waking us up in the middle of the night as well as the hotel error at check-in as it appeared that the room upgrade was not processed correctly therefore showing no record of us staying in that room. In fact, night management told us that we should be apologizing to him for not opening the door sooner! This person had no regard to guest etiquette and could have solved the problem much sooner if he did not go on and on of how we were in the wrong (as we did not open the door to strangers). Morning management was much more sympathetic and did credit us for our one-night stay, but what was supposed to be a fun birthday celebration ended up being a sleepless night and a fatigued next day.
- 5/5
Location is excellent! Love the rooftop bar
- 5/5
The only con i has was there was no vending on the hotel nor was there a microwave to reheat meals
- 2/5
The room was extremely hot, almost like a sauna. The only solution offered was to open the window, which brought in noise and dirt from New York City. Additionally, the hotel manager behaved disrespectfully and insultingly, and his rudeness made the stay very unpleasant.
- 3/5
Heater unit made a loud clicking noise. Tried to change room and called maintenance, and they said they made the same noise in all rooms as they weee old and needed to be replaced.
- 5/5
Clean room, nice staff, great value
- 5/5
Fine. Just be aware of the RESORT FEE that is not included in price quoted. At checkin the front desk clerk actually said that ut was a TAX or FEE to City. Thats ridiculous
- 5/5
Night staff was great. Day staff was ok. Loved the attached restaurant. Location is phenomenal
- 5/5
Great location. Near Central Park. Lincoln Center. Great staff. Comfortable Room.
- 5/5
I have stayed here a number of times. Every experience has been wonderful. I would highly recommend the Empire Hotel!
- 2/5
Tired and dirty room.
- 5/5
The staff was great, and we loved how centrally located it is.
- 4/5
Staff was very friendly and helpful.
- 3/5
The Empire Hotel was disappointing. The room had a furnace, which is fine, but when it kicked ON it was so incredibly loud and obnoxious. I couldnt sleep! I had to move rooms. The staff was friendly, I will say. They accommodated me. The hotel is just too old and has issues. Wont be staying there again.
- 5/5
The rooms are clean, the bed was comfortable, the bedding and sheets were lovely. Had a wonderful view of the pocket park in front of the hotel. Check-in was fast and efficient. The doormen were courteous. The price was perfect. The location is excellent!
- 5/5
Staff were nice and housekeeping cleaned room everyday. Lovely rooftop bar with firer place.
- 5/5
Great staff and location!
- 4/5
Staff is phenomenal. 1st rate. Lobby looks amazing. Some damage in hallways and doors starting to show. Rooms are very small and not all of them have a view. Still had a great time, great location for people that already know the city
- 3/5
Good place, convenient. Clean. Heat/Ac challenged. There will be a residence fee and taxes attached, expect an extra $30/night.
- 4/5
Convenient location and free bottles of water BUT very loud, could hear the pipes rattling all night.
- 5/5
The room was clean. The heater was delightfully oppressive on a zero degree day. The tv needs some updating but it was fine. Loved the bottles of water at check in. Everyone was great. Wish there was coffee in house instead of having to go around the corner to Starbucks but that’s mostly zero degree weather related. Loved my view of Broadway.
- 4/5
The hotel is beautiful- even if it is a bit older and worn down in the corners. My room was the smallest one available but clean. I appreciated the bottled waters every day.
- 3/5
It is a expected for a reasonable price in NYC
- 4/5
Staff
- 2/5
The hotel needed basic maintenance...no heat in the room...it was 11 degrees outside...no hot water...LOUD 1st floor room...When our credit card statement was reviewed, we had a $22.89 charge since Expedia used. A third party charge I was told. I called the hotel and asked for the service fee to be removed...Denied... Go someplace else that respects you and doesn't hide fees to their customers...
- 2/5
Comfy beds. Pretty lobby. Close to Central Park. But Sneaky hidden fees. Called after received credit card statement....The fees were never mentioned when checking IN or OUT ..Find an honest hotel...
- 4/5
Staff here is always so nice and polite, greet with smile for you at the reception. Nice to get bottled water whenever you go out or come back to your room. Maids are good to check you when to clean the room. Wished if there is in room coffee maker or so.
- 4/5
Enjoyed my stay. Incredibly nice and helpful staff! There were a couple of maintenance issues in my room and they fixed them so promptly that I was impressed! Great location. I can’t say enough about the staff, from top to bottom excellent. No coffee maker, but Starbucks on the corner.
- 5/5
Condition of room, warm and accommodating staff
- 1/5
The only solution is to leave the heat on during the day, and then turn it totally off at night, so that there are no crazy noises coming from the machine and you can sleep. So I had four nights of terrible sleep. The walls are nicked, the carpet stained the bathroom old. The entire building is tired and rundown with the exception of the lobby and the rooftop bar both of which are OK. The rooms are cheap, which is good because they feel really, really cheap, which I guess makes sense. But it could be so much better than it is.
- 5/5
so beautiful and great location!
- 5/5
clean, great lobby with comfy couches and great music, rooms larger than expected, friendly staff, and obviously a perfect location ❤️
- 5/5
Yes. BUT YOU NEED TO OFFER COFFEE TO GUESTS
- 5/5
Amazing location, very supportive staff, clean and nice rooms. Truly enjoyed the stay! Highly recommended.
- 5/5
Great location, friendly service.
- 4/5
Yes
- 5/5
Nice
- 1/5
Room smelled and AC was not working properly.
- 1/5
Property is ONLY living on proximity to the Lincoln Center. Clearly ownership has no pride in product. Rooms have water damage & possible black mold. Actually got the royal treatment. A 2 nite stay in 2 different room. Both not what I reserved. 1st on was a shoebox. One is the smallest I’ve ever stayed in. My reservation was for a King bed Superior room. I got a Queen bed interior room. Next night after a convo with management, they switched me to a Junior Suite. However bigger room just showed more poor ownership. Again possible black mold on ceiling. Shades not working. Housekeeping missing human hair in bathroom & left overs in mini ridge. For the location to NOT be maintained is trifling. I place this review squarely on the shoulders of ownership. Have some pride in your facilities. Fix & repair & update your current “shady empire hotel”. Place is a dump in the rooms.
- 4/5
The Empire hotel is conveniently located near Lincoln Center with Central Park, Columbus Circle and many wonderful restaurants within walking distance. The rooms have been updated, the bed was comfortable and it has an excellent rooftop bar. However the hotel is in need of some TLC. The gym was so dirty and so many dumbbells were missing it was almost unusable. The halls are dingy and it just didn’t seem 100% clean. Also once in the room there were no instructions on how to call the front desk or housekeeping for requests.
- 2/5
Staff were pleasant, the heater in our room was not working, and there was cold air coming from the window.. We froze all day and night in the room. For the price you’re paying you would expect these things to be working.
- 4/5
I would not say the stay was great. People at front desk were very nice. One person there helped me get online when I could not access the internet on the hotel's Wi-fi. There was no shower curtain. When I asked for one it was delivered, but I had to put it on (which I did not mind doing). There was no heat, and a very nice man came about about 9 p.m. and fixed that. After that, the room was fine, but like the Empire generally, it was a little the worst for wear.
- 5/5
Central, great staff, great location.
- 5/5
The staff here is amazing.
- 5/5
Definitely will come back to NY again. Empire was nice hotel and glad it beside nice restaurants THE SMiTH and Starbucks
- 5/5
Room was very clean, front desk was excellent, and roof top lounge was very relaxing with great views.
- 4/5
1029
- 1/5
Bed was extremely hard, you couldn't sit on the toilet properly due to the bathroom door being in the way. Curtain in room would not open so didn't get to have the New York view and the front desk did not care. Very loud in the hotel. Doors slamming all night. The only thing that was nice about the hotel is that the doorman would hold on to luggage after check out so that you could explore while waiting on your flight.
- 2/5
Rooms were unkept, A/C unit leaked water, bathroom smelled like urine, people were smoking marijuana so it reeked of weed, other than that bed was comfortable, shower had great water pressure and our luggage was held safely.
- 2/5
Dismal accommodation!
- 2/5
The room was very hot and the thermostat didn’t work. We tried to open the window and it literally fell into our hands. On our last night the heater was making a loud clanking noise and we had to wait until 1:30am to somebody to come up and deal with it, over 2hrs after we called.
- 1/5
Where do I have begin the first night we checked in Thursday 29° outside, we walked into our room at 40 degrees cold the heater was not working! We let them know we walked into a room with out a working heater, was told to wait for about an hour to start working requested to go for a different room, but they were apparently there no other available room.
- 2/5
We stayed on New Years for the Met Opera and paid 800. plus for a very small clean room with no water bottles or small refrigerator which is fine and can be expected in NYC but then throw in no hot water in the shower and and no TV signal both days it gets worse. We mentioned it to the lobby as we checked out and they just apologized offering no credit or a percentage for a next stay. A cup of coffee? That is poor customer service. As folks who are constantly staying in NYC we saw this cute hotel turn into a lower grade hotel. Bummer.
- 5/5
Muy buena localization y muy bonito el lugar y otros
- 5/5
Good overall hotel, short term for visiting Lincoln Center, excellent stay.
- 3/5
Room was cramped and a little dusty, no hand soap in the bathroom, but overall good hotel. I honestly got it because of gossip girl but not work the hype or money.
- 4/5
Everything was good but the beds were not confortable
- 4/5
but they came and snaked it the next day. Otherwise it was great location!
- 2/5
The staff were friendly and helpful, but the hotel was sub par. I was highly disappointed in the room as we had to change rooms because it was dirty and dusty. The furniture seems old and rundown. I did not feel comfortable using the bed/bath areas. I feel the hotel needs to held at a better standard with the rate amounts that they charge for the room.
- 5/5
Very friendly and accomodating staff!
- 3/5
Room was very dusty and wasn't cleaned for 2 days out of 4 during my stay there.
- 3/5
The hotel was in a great location with several restaurants in close proximity. The last night was the biggest issue. The heater went out in our room. The temperature was 18 degrees in New York. The engineer came to the room and argued with me say that the heat was fixed. The engineer asked me to put my hand on the heating unit. I could feel heat but it was not blowing out of the heater. I was told to call the front desk and ask for a room change. There were no rooms available so they sent us a oscillating heater that helped a little. We spent our last night in New York cold.
- 4/5
Offered everything we needed but could really benefit from either a bar or self service coffee facility in the foyer.
- 4/5
The hotel location is great. The elevators are fast, but can be crowded in the mornings. The bathrooms are tiny (even by nyc hotel standards). The staff were pleasant.
- 3/5
I checked in to dirty towel pillow covers. I asked from desk to get them changed and no one showed up til the next morning because house keeping was gone for the day. Aside from that rooms do look runned down a bit. It’s close to everything. There is a restaurant in hotel which is perfect when traveling with low on those early cold mornings.
- 5/5
Professional and welcoming staff
- 3/5
My trip did not go as planned I was not informed I wouldn't have rooftop acess on New Eve after booking the hotel for that purpose very disappointed
- 1/5
The discount on hotels.com was a scam. The property added 150 dollars to the cost once we arrived. The hotel is a chaotic mess. Zero service. The keys didn’t work; it smelled of cigarette smoke and cleaning fluid. No one was helpful. Cost over 600/night to stay in what was basically a dirty motel. Never again.
- 4/5
But id absolutely stay again.
- 3/5
Outdated hotel in central of New York, great location but don’t expect any good service expect the front desk employees that are great.
- 5/5
The location
- 3/5
Wasn't impressed
- 5/5
Room was perfect, location was perfect, super kind staff
- 5/5
I love the staff super nice and helpful very pleasant atmosphere!
- 5/5
Great atmosphere and enjoyed our stay. Clean rooms and friendly staf
- 5/5
Nice hotel. Clean, pleasant staff, convenient location
- 5/5
The staff were extremely helpful and attentive. You can’t beat the location.
- 4/5
Staff is great, room is clean and comfortable. Showers are a little difficult to work - hard to calibrate it precisely for hot water.
- 2/5
I had stayed here numerous times a few years back and was completely disappointed by the lack of upkeep tp the rooms. Everything was warped and falling apart.....also My first night I had to get separate rooms to from my children (16,18) and they would not accommodate putting us on the same floor, I feel they could have done something to ease my anxiety with that I was on the 8th and my children the 2nd......
- 3/5
There for two nights for the Christmas lights. Heat was on constantly and AC didn’t work at all to cool the room down. Staff was great. Free waters at the front desk. Bed was a little stiff but my wife had no complaints about it. Big NYC room, but I can’t overlook the AC/ heating issue.
- 1/5
Terrible stay rooms were dirty I was told all resort fees would be remodeled
- 1/5
Avoid this place at all cost. We got a room with a broken AC, they could not move us that night because the hotel was full. We got move on our final night. The room they moved us to, the ac again had issues. Luckily they were able to fix it. We asked for additional towels as they only had two in the room and it was four of us. My wife , me and our two children. When they gave us the keys to the new room I asked for two additional towels. 30 minutes later no towels have been brought. I call the front desk several times no answer. I went back to the front desk and asked for the towels again. I was told I would get them in 15 minutes at most. Again 30 minutes later, no towels. I tried calling again, no answer. Went down again, was told that the manager herself would bring them up. 30 minutes later, no towels . I called front desk and got a person that I could not understand a word he was saying, bad phone connection. After waiting again for 20 minutes I went back to the front desk only to be told that they had no more towels to give out. I was told by the front desk that they would take it from a room that wasn’t being used. Another issue is the shower drain is clogged, so really nice to stand on dirty water. Complete BS. Hotel is full so they just lied got get me out of their face. This place is run by morons. Stay away.
- 4/5
Beautiful hotel but we have some issues with the room keys several times.
- 3/5
Maintenance needed!
- 5/5
Really great staff, clean
- 3/5
The room was adequate but the heat was on very high and it did not cool off much even with the air conditioning on. Overall satisfied though
- 4/5
My husband and I traveled to NYC for my birthday around the holidays. We had the most magical time! We really enjoyed the Empire hotel. Nice front desk staff and they held our luggage for us before we could check in. I’d say the cons would be the restaurant above them is mid at best and the room was a bit outdated and small with no fridge or microwave. Overall, we loved staying at the Chuck Bass hotel ;).
- 3/5
Needs lots of updating. Staff friendly.
- 1/5
Check-in is at 3pm. We arrived at 2:30p to check-in and the front desk said they would text us when the room was ready and took our number down. We waited in the lobby. They never texted us and when we went to check back in they said they were too busy to contact us and said that we had to wait in line again to re-check in. We ended up checking in at 4pm despite arriving on time. The hotel didn’t offer any apologies or compensation for the late check-in time.
- 3/5
The room was in disrepair. Pealing paint on the ceiling, toilet did not flush properly, soap holder in shower was dangling, one of the two roller shades was broken. On the upside, the hotel is very conveniently located for what I need, and I would not be opposed to staying again.
- 4/5
We had to switch rooms because the first room smelled very strongly like grilling steak. Our second room was great and had an awesome view.
- 5/5
Stayed here for Christmas. Family of 4. Staff was great. Rooms were great, beds were cozy. Enjoyed our stay here for 5 days.
- 5/5
Staff were very courteous. Check in process was easy. Room was clean
- 5/5
Friendly staff
- 2/5
The room was tiny, the bathroom tinier and the whole place needs to be remodeled. The room was stuffy and hot until we turned the air conditioner on (this was on Dec 14th, NYC’s 1st snow - it was in the 30’s outside!). The lobby is lovely and I appreciated the free bottled water from the front desk people. But that’s about the only positive thing I can offer. I will not return the the Empire on my next trip.
- 4/5
Everything was fine, nice Hotel!
- 5/5
Rooms a little small, but still a great hotel
- 3/5
Room, need to be cleaned. Electrical for charging horrible. Staff very misleading. Tell you you’ll have x view and you get y. Temp in lobby not well controlled, either way to hot or too cold
- 4/5
I very staff that promptly responded to our needs. The two downside were the lack of a microwave and coffee maker in the room. I've stayed in hotels around the world, and this is the first time a room didn't have these items.
- 5/5
Good location
- 5/5
Great value. Terrific location. Clean. Hot shower. Comfy bed. Decent gym.
- 4/5
Ok for the price, location pretty good
- 5/5
Yes
- 3/5
Room was dated and bathroom amenities were minimal
- 3/5
Bar was closed and they bwelcomed pets
- 5/5
Great stay, good location. Clean room, friendly staff.

It was absolutely ridiculous, there was a dog barking all night that kept my kids up on Christmas Eve! Messed up the plans on running to the car to get the presents etc. staff was notified more than once

Great location, close to Central Park. Enjoyed the Rooftop bar. Staff is super friendly, had a beautiful Christmas tree in lobby. Free unlimited water bottles in lobby. Would have been 5 stars but the heating system wasn't working. We couldn't adjust temperature ourselves. Had to call maintenance each time we wanted to adjust temp.

Spacious room, quick check in, room had an amazing view

The room was smaller than the photos displayed. Washroom fixtures were loose & needed repairs ( toilet paper holder fell off wall & restroom door handle was insecure). The hotel property needs some TLC. It’s a shame that better care & attention to detail is lacking among staff in a location requiring professional handling.

first night there was no water We spoke to a redhead, and she was very irritated not polite at all!! The rest of the nights our water would not get hot. We told the clerk at the front desk. She was very polite. Sent an engineer up to our room to try to fix it. Water was still lukewarm. We never had hot water to shower. The hotel is very old. They couldn’t even fix the dressers. The material was stripped off just hanging!

In addition, this hotel does not include a coffee maker or any of the usual expectations for a hotel. I have a long history of staying at this hotel when I visit NYC, this is not acceptable.

The BIGGER and more unsafe circumstance was a disconnected fire alarm. I’m no fire safety director but that just might be ILLEGAL in NYC. We did not discover until morning. Good thing as I would not have slept a wink for worry. I mentioned it to the desk clerk upon check out and he said the batteries were connected but the cover was off. Perhaps that was the case. Even if not, it was a one-off. We have booked multiple rooms here over the year and I simply love the hotel. Especially at the holidays, it is so pretty and perfectly located.

If they do decide to do a much needed renovation, DO NOT DO RAINSHOWER SHOWERHEADS OR GLASS BATHROOM DOORS!! When the light is turned on at night it wakes everyone up!

Everything was perfect. That location is awesome. It has many places around to eat and everything is closed, but the only issue was the hot water. We didn’t have hot water in the room which was difficult for us because we had little kids, but staff was excellent and the location is excellent. The only thing they got fixed is the Issue with the water.

The staff was lovely

Hotel definitely in need of a small update as the rooms are showing their age. Can’t believe there is no coffee in room or offered in the lobby. Staff was excellent!
