Epworth By The Sea

The hotel itself is on a Methodist property and is on beautiful grounds, but the amenities and hotel need to be updated. Shower was not coming out all the way very old bathrooms are not updated. TV was almost the size of a monitor and very old blurry screen.

The staff was very helpful.

The second was a slightly rude encounter with the security guard. My husband was trying to get the TV to come on and it would not. He called down to the "front desk." Now...granted we checked in late and this turned out to be the security guard. When my husband told him we were having issues getting the TV on, he was immediately irritable with him stating that he needed to be louder because he was outside (it wasn't what he said, but HOW. Also, my husband said he didnt know that...he had just called "front desk). He offered no solutions or attempts to help at all. Basically said there was nothing he could do. We did end up figuring it out ourselves.

This stay was perfect, clean quiet and close to everything. Me n hubby had a lake view with the balcony, it was a great two days for his bday. Will definitely stay again. The bed was to hard for me but he liked it.

Of course the rooms are always nice and feel inviting. Staff has always been nice and helpful.

We tried to check in at 5:00pm and the lobby door was locked and there was no one there. There were only 2 cars in the parking lot. The property seemed oddly deserted. We were forced to find other accomodations after a 7 hour drive. It was a horrible experience.

Bed was hard and the pillows were harder. But that's a simple fix on our part because we normally take our own pillows and have been considering a travel mattress topper since my wife and I both have back issues.

Riverside Staff was not that polite when we inquired as to breakfast. Not very welcoming. Kids roaming made me nervous. No coffee maker in our room.

Having the 2 piers to fish off of are nice ,,its quite and peaceful. I have been coming here for 30 years and I will continue to. There is nothing here for 30 years that I have ever had a complaint about. My happy place

For the price, the rooms were not the cleanest, were very old and the beds were not comfortable. We were woken up by house keeping multiple times asking when we were checking out after our first night when we booked for two nights. Went to front desk and they also did not show our second night. We had to show our hotels.com booking to prove we paid for 2 nights. We were placed at the back of the property away from all amenities when the hotel was almost empty. No vending machines. Not the best experience would not recommend especially for the price. Felt more like a $89/nightly motel vs $150+ nightly rate.

Property was serene and beautiful and very well-kept. Staff was very friendly and professional. Room was amazing, quiet and we had a wonderful view of the water and boats. We would definitely stay here again!!

Nice place but need a lot upgrade and cleaning

Epworth is a true gem and we will certainly be back. The grounds are incredibly well maintained and the natural beauty is astonishing!

Sparse, out dated but clean

Its on an old plantation. They dont provide more than 3 sets of towels regardless of how many guests and charge you if you need more. They have a sign that says they encourage you to reuse your towels everyday. The lamps were dusty. The bathtub mat had mildew. The shower curtain had mildew. I wish we could have left but the hurricane was in effect.

A very beautiful area

For the price, this was a decent place. Beautiful grounds. Check-in given keys & map to the Turner Lodge. Should have been told about pool, church & service, dining facility, vending location, museum, any other amenities. No coffee in room, fridge was tiny w/ no freezer at all, mattress reasonably comfortable, very small TV. Worst thing was lack of insulation in building. We heard toilets flushing & sliding glass doors opening. Beautiful view from balcony & peaceful grounds. Convenient drive to town. Friendly staff, but they need to be trained to inform guests of what's available or give out a leaflet with info.

This was the first time we’ve stayed at Epworth by the Sea and it was amazing. The room was very clean and nice and the views were amazing! It was very peaceful and relaxing. We are already planning our next trip to stay here!

But wowza! The front desk was terrific and, when I had an issue with the room in the middle of the night, I received swift and wonderful assistance. Great people, BEAUTIFUL campus to walk, and peaceful so one can relax and then hit the crowds of the beaches and shopping area for a nice balance. I will be going back!

We loved the facility, grounds, room, view and staff. However the bed has seen better days.

The campus is in a great location. It is on the water and has a great path that walks along the water. Beautiful to watch at sunset. It is a short drive to anywhere you would like on the island. The rooms are simple but comfortable. They do need small coffee makers though. It would have been really nice to sit on the balcony and watch the Sunset. That was a little dissapointing but other than that I was pretty happy with my stay. The price was very reasonable.

was missing paint in several spots and the lock on the bathroom door is broken. Front desk staff seemed annoyed that I was asking questions about where to get food on site. I was done with my shower by the time hot water started to flow from the shower head.

Pictures are deceiving. Just a Methodist retreat masquerading as a luxe hotel. Rooms are like Grandma's condo purchased in the 80s. There are 2 buildings. One is not pictured. I believe called Robertson. Don't accept that. No patio or non-sealed windows. Older too. People near me partied until 2am. Reception just shrugged when I told them. It obviously had been going on w/o being remedied. No one there at night to call. It's just not a professional hotel. Good view and grounds though. Sand fleas nipped me while walking around.

Grounds were gorgeous! Stunning views! Cleaner than expected. Could use an update in-room, but easily 9.5.

There is no better place than Epworth to relax, rest, and refresh. It is one of the jewels of SSI.

Beautiful marshes view. Difficult to find the location.

Had a 2nd floor room. It's a 3-story property. We could hear toilets flushing from other rooms (they are powerful) and could hear the sliding glass door from the room above us as they walked in and out to their balcony. That was the only negative thing about our stay.

Everything was good and clean. I enjoyed my sleep. Nice and quiet.

The hotel and adjacent area was wonderful. We had a great time. The food there surprisingly was delicious. We will look to stay there again!

Amazing view of the sunset from our balcony. Great views of the river. Clean room, great place to take a nice walk if you want on the property. On the negative, the toilet doesn't have a lid so when you flush (it's a super powerful flusher) water squirts out of the toiler onto the floor, etc. I found myself flushing and running! Also, you're a quick 10- 15 minute drive to restaurants, beach, etc. on the island. We'll be coming back again....maybe with a lid.

Lovely, tranquil river-front facility. Although they host large groups, there was no evidence of it - no noise, no overloaded parking lots. Enough away from downtown, but close enough for easy access. Bike trails to town. 24-hr coffee station.

Epworth is a lovely, quiet retreat on St. Simon's, but personnel have little information about the island and not much more about their own amenities.

It is a clean and well maintained. I would definitely stay here again.

Very quiet and comfortable very peaceful beautiful surrounding great place for family and fun. Very close to beaches and water parks. It you want to relax this is for you.

The location was perfect and quiet. I would recommend it to everyone. We took our own coffee pot and supplies and was very comfortable. We plan to return when the weather cools off. Great memories were made with my family.

We enjoyed our stay at Epworth, the room was clean & comfy. We would stay there again.

We arrived around 9pm and the place was desolate! No front desk etc. We called the phone number and the recording said they closed at 4pm. When I say it was like going to scary deserted place I mean exactly that. I am now having to figure out getting our $ back as we had already paid for the room and had to go find somewhere else to stay.

The view from our room was beautiful! The room needed a microwave, otherwise fine. The balcony and view just can't be beat!

A great value for a nice, clean hotel with great views of the marsh and nice grounds. Be aware that this is located and operated as part of a Methodist retreat center.

Very beautiful and peaceful property. The pool has life guard and is deep very good to some swim laps. Definitely going back.

The room was spacious and clean. We really wish it had a coffee maker and a microwave however. Would’ve been nice to have some type of on-site dining also. For what you get the price was too high in my opinion.

Absolutely the most scenic views, watching the tides come in watching the sailboats. Was very quite during my stay.The office personnel was very nice fast check in. Stayed during the pandemic Covid-19 everyone wore there mask. They did tell me the cleaning staff would not be at service on a daily basis was fine with me. Epworth by the sea was awesome.

Great room, nice view and really cold ac!!! Do understand it’s a church property/retreat and say they do not permit alcohol on their property***** did not know this until we got there. Good place if you just need a bed and planning on going else where around the island.

Paid for in advance as a non cancel reservation and then we get to check in and they claimed they did not have a reservation and could not find it. so we had to go stay near the Highway at another location. And Hotel.com would not even help us get our money or points back

I love the beautiful old buildings, churches, fountain and you can ride bikes and has fishing pier. The only thing you had to request refrigerator and microwave if you need one ahead of time. Rooms was clean and had balcony with river view was nice.

Thin walls and very loud sliding doors to the balcony. Every time the door was opened and closed it sounded like thunder

We stayed 2 nights and there was no cleaning service. I didn't realize this and don't remember reading that it would not be provided.

Upon arrival, we found bugs all throughout our room. On the walls, ceiling, and even in the bed. We were showed two more rooms to try and stay in, however, they were filled with bugs too. I would like to note that the staff was incredibly nice and helpful and have even reached out to me to let me know that they have seeked professional help and again apologizing for everything. We did not stay here and had to make a last minute booking elsewhere.

Absolutely amazing place

We loved everything and plan to return ther for sure.

First the the great views are worth staying here. The property is a little different because this is more of a retreat For groups than a hotel individual travelers. The stay was very nice as I said the views are great. Only downside is no coffee in the rooms only at the 1st level. But that wasn’t a problem for us.

The woman at the front desk was rude. There was no coffee in the room. The only coffee was in front of the building at the lowest level and wasn't stocked. It was very disappointing, for a place that was so much better in pass years. So much for the new trustee.

TV and desk phone didn’t work. TV was replaced with no hassle. Phone wasn’t but we didn’t use it anyway.

It was lovely, quiet and safe.

I loved the view! It was so relaxing. I stayed out there for a long time just journaling and meditating. It really helped me connect deeper with myself, and great distance from everything.

We were pleased with our experience with only one exception...no in-room mini refrigerator/microwave.

The view from our room was beautiful. But we rented this room through Expedia and did not expect the entire hotel to be located within a giant Methodist Retreat. It was a little odd. The entire place seemed like a ghost town. The lobby was a completely different building because the main lobby in our hotel was locked up and dark. The batteries were dead in the smoke detectors and it just kept chirping. There was not a staff member in site except for the one in the other building a quarter mile or more away. Overall it was just a really strange experience.

Very nice and quiet area! The renovated rooms were also very nice. I wish they included extra blankets because the blankets provided were very thin. Also, would have been nice to have a microwave/fridge in the room, but overall no big deal
