Reviews
The hotel is praised for its historic charm, aesthetic, and convenient location in the Gaslamp district. However, guests frequently complain about the small room size, ineffective air conditioning, and expensive valet parking.

Great Location and decent room
- 1/5
The Entrance area looks at least interesting. Everything, it was not clean, it was extremely loud. The staff is clearly annoyed. Hairs in the shower from the previous person. Piles of dirt and dust behind the bed curtains where you sleep. The price and the way it is advertised is a scam and misleading. 50$ for a night when you need to place to stay would be okay for that torture. Some of the ratings must clearly be paid for. There is no way.
- 1/5
The rooftop view was nice and the location overall was not too bad. Very noisy area, but good for going out in the evening. The elevators are over 100 years old. Only one of the two elevators worked and they were extremely slow. When we got there and checked in, our room was supposedly already cleaned. When we checked the bed, it was dirty with hair and other things on the sheets. They moved us to another room and that bed was also dirty. Some hair and possible fluids on these sheets. They were completely booked for the night so they couldn’t change rooms. It took him a few hours to change the sheets when we wanted to rest and get up to go out. Ended up missing the whole first evening because of that.

This is an older hotel, restored with charming details, but may not be for everyone. The elevator is manual (I took the stairs) and no direct room service, but there’s a restaurant next door.
- 5/5
From the outside in the entire property is in pristine condition and the vintage vibes were incredible. the staff was polite and friendly, helping me with places to walk too around Gaslamp. I will definitely be coming back and will bring others with me!
- 2.5/5
location was still a far walk to attractions. The room was noisy from the outside people partying, playing music and talking, the lift (elevator) was literally from the early 20th century, with a very heavy door to pull open and a very heavy meltle gate to also slide upon. I had to pay $65 a night ($130 total) to park my car. I was not informed about that from Booking.com. There was no other less expensive place to house my car in San Diego.

Great experience

Classic and cozy Noisy AF. All night long. Even on floor 10
- 4/5
Honestly I love this hotel. The only thing I did not appreciate was the elevators. They are gorgeous and are the original elevators! Super cool to look at but very unpractical. The elevator does not alert you when it is at your floor so you have to be watching for it. Someone at the front desk mentioned something about the elevator gate closing fast but that was all. There really should be some extra tips when you check in on how to use them. I missed the elevator many times because I wasn’t aware that it was at my floor. Had I known I wasn’t going to be alerted I would have paid more attention. The other elevator was out of service so it just made the waiting time longer. If it weren’t for that I would have given 5 stars.

- 4.5/5
Rooftop area and bar very nice. Suite room good size, bed comfy. Parking per night is expensive. Love the old elevator but the door to open is heavy. Love the roof top bar but more food options and options for shade would make it even nicer.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel! Only downside is the slow elevator
- 3/5
First, I really liked the vibes of this hotel and the theming. The rooftop has great views and the bartender was super nice. Peach rings in the lobby were fun and location was overall good. That is sadly where the positive ends for me. The elevator, though very historic, is not practical. I pinched my fingers multiple times. I felt like I was going to get stuck continually and moving with two bags was a hard task. I was on the 8th floor so stairs weren’t a great option with two bags. One elevator is not functional as well. At check in, with three people at the desk only the male really seemed to acknowledge us. The younger girl didn’t make eye contact until the manager asked her to help. We arrived at 10am and rooms were assigned randomly for our group with most not being ready until 3. I understand that’s check in time but they almost were not ready even by then. The rooms are very very small. Almost claustrophobic. The AC was so loud and never really got cool. I didn’t sleep well for both nights I was there. I was also right by the elevator and the slamming of the elevator doors made me jump non stop. Historic, yes. Practical? Not really. I found myself wishing I was at the Moxy across the street.
- 5/5
Clean room and helpful staff! Restaurant is also great
- 2/5
They only have one elevator and it only fits 3 people and it’s very old ! You have to wait about 10 minutes just to use the elevator to get to your room !
- 4/5
Really cut
- 5/5
I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel, very cute place great staff! Just something to note if you do have mobility issues the elevators are an original design, which is very cool, but not the easiest to use.
- 4/5
Very good
- 3/5
Rooftop was nice, cute lobby. Room was so so.
- 5/5
I was in awe as soon as I walked in. The staff was helpful. They conveniently provide valet. The roof top is a must visit.

It was perfect for the few days we were staying. clean and helpful staff!

Exceptional
- 1/5
Not only was one elevator broken, the working elevator had throw up on the floor which no one bothered to clean for hours. AC in the room is VERY loud and barely cools. Loud noise from party people outside is clearly heard inside the rooms. Sink is outside of the bathroom with no counter space to put anything. Tiny room with barely any space to walk. There are plenty of nicer places to stay in San Diego! Only positive is the nice valet people and the staff at the downstairs restaurant.
- 5/5
hotel / stay was amazing ! staff & valet were great and always friendly and helpful , location in the heart of SD was amazing as well. Thank you Palihotel for the wonderful time !
- 4/5
Price was the best deal I could find considering what was available in the area. It is conveniently localed to the Petco stadium, the train station, the troley and has fine dining all around including a great restaurant inside. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The room is adequate and very clean. The only problem we had was with the elevator it was very slow and difficult to get into and out of. If you have luggage ask for help.
- 5/5
This building is so cool and beautiful. The restaurant is delicious and the roof top views are stunning! To top all of that the entire staff is wonderful.
- 3/5
Check-in was pleasant until I entered my room and was immediately met with a strong cigarette smoke smell. I called to confirm I was in a non-smoking room and was told the hotel is fully smoke-free. While I understand hotels can’t fully control guest behavior, I was disappointed I wasn’t proactively offered another room and instead had to repack everything and manage the difficult elevator bank situation alone with luggage. Thankfully, a very kind building technician helped me through the room change, only for us to discover the new room’s AC and phone were not working. He spent about 30 minutes fixing both, which I appreciated, but by then I was exhausted, dealing with a headache and throat irritation from the smoke exposure due to my asthma, and just wanted to rest. Unfortunately, the new room also had heavy street and nightclub noise until around 2am, making it difficult to sleep even with earplugs. The next morning, I requested a late checkout given all the issues from the night before, but was denied unless I paid an extra fee, which felt disappointing considering the circumstances. I told the receptionist at check-in how much I loved Pali Hotels and how excited I was to stay here, so overall this experience was a real letdown.
- 3/5
More positives of staying at Palihotel was friendly front desk staff, charming lobby and staircase. It was like stepping back into time. My room was very clean with a comfortable bed and thankfully located on the second floor. Only one elevator worked during our time but taking the stairs was convenient. Really cool rooftop bar but we only went one time because we couldn't get an elevator. It was worth the walk up the 12 flights of stairs to get the view of San Diego! Some negatives experiences about staying at the Palihotel for us was the fully stocked refrigerator of alcohol and other drinks left us zero room for any of our own drinks and food. Our shower gave us about 5 minutes of warm/hot water. Our room had no outside windows. We had two windows looking at an inner courtyard. Not a big deal but felt a little trapped. Overall it was a good experience and I would consider staying again on a future trip to San Diego.
- 5/5
Great location walkable atmosphere is incredible
- 1/5
Reaching out to the front desk for a room change brought their engineer in, who made their best attempt to fix the noise with styrofoam, but admittedly reported most units were about as noisy if not worse- devil that you know, and thankful I always pack earplugs. While the aesthetics of the space were charming, the queen bed took up most of the room, with walking space just wide enough for one person, and a suitcase at the foot of the bed. No suitcase stand. And the closet was a rail over the tea station. Not to mention the window was a small single window, looking directly into neighboring rooms if the shutters weren’t closed. Lastly, I phoned the night before checkout to request a late checkout. Bizarrely the front desk said that could only be arranged the following morning, completely defeating the attempt at making up some sleep. Would not recommend this hotel if the gamble is for a queen room like Ithis.

Historic building and lovely details throughout the hotel. The hotel was a destination :) The historical elevator. Understandable but inconvenient when you are in a rush.

The location was perfect with plenty to do nearby, literally so much to do. Loved the boutique style hotel. The rooftop is cute and private lounge vibes and the view is beautiful The parking fees, the noise, the broken elevator

- 2.5/5
Good location. Old building that needs a lot of updating. Inadequate (circa 1912) elevator, small bathrooms, cooling inadequate, storage inadequate, bed was like a canoe.

Great Location
- 5/5
clean room, friendly staff
- 5/5
The rooms are a bit small, but are very unique and have some very cool decor. The way the rooms are decorated makes it feel more like a cozy bedroom in a really cool historic house than a hotel. Bed was very comfy and the place is nice and quiet at night, I couldn’t hear anything through the walls or in the hallways. There’s also an awesome rooftop lounge with a bar that’s exclusive to guests only, which I forgot to check out because I was busy exploring San Diego. However I’m sure I’ll be staying here again, so I’ll check it out next time. For the price, you really can’t beat the experience here. If you’re looking for something cool and unique, historic but trendy, but are also working with a “Motel 6” type budget, you can’t go wrong with this place.
- 5/5
Such a cute French themed place with a little cafe built in.
- 5/5
Clean room good location
- 3/5
The air conditioner sounds like a motorcycle starting up, very hard to sleep with. The hotel is very cute, the area seems a little rough… a lot of police sirens and people screaming in the alley all night.
- 2/5
The decor is very charming and you can tell they are trying to preserve the history of the building - the rooftop is cute but drinks come pre-mixed. Overall, would not recommend staying here (or in the Gaslamp in general).
- 5/5
We enjoyed our stay
- 5/5
The Palihotel is a quaint establishment set in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego that is well maintained with comfortable rooms.
- 5/5
such an aesthetic beautiful hotel, I recommend staying here! only complaint is the nose at night from gaslamp but it didn’t bother me as much
- 5/5
Clean room. Very unique hotel loved the decor
- 3/5
One Elevator was down, had to walk 7 flights multiple times.
- 1/5
Room is really tight. Over price…
- 5/5
This property is so cute and quaint!
- 5/5
Only thing is it is a bit noisy because of location but wasn’t too much of a bother
- 3/5
Highlights: Location, style, comfort
- 4/5
Cute hotel and super charming! Loved the rooftop bar and the view of the city. The snacks in the room were a great addition. The rooms were super small so I would keep this in mind if you’re someone who needs plenty of space for luggage and in general. The showers were pretty small too but clean and nice still. Great location too. The elevator is very slow because of how old it is and we opted for the stairs just because of the timing.
- 1/5
We get back at 3pm and told to go to our room on the 6th floor. Their key card thing was down so someone would have to meet us up there to let us into the room then we would have to come back later to get our actual keys. The elevators- look i understand it's an older building but to only have 1 working with the amount of people waiting was absolutely wild. We get up to our room and the employee is just as confused as us stating "someone is already in your guys room" so we're standing there with all our luggage he's on the phone with the supervisor who states we have to go back downstairs to talk to front desk. We take the stairs because the elevator is just taking too long it's check in time and a lot of people. We get back down stairs no one knows what going on she gives me free drink vouchers hoping to help i understand she tried her best and was very friendly. We get a new assigned rooms ON THE 9th FLOOR! The line was so long for the elevators we just said f it and we walk up the 9 flight of stairs mind you it's almost 4 we have some where to be at 5pm. AC sucked and no WiFi
- 1/5
Wanted to love this hotel, but it missed the mark. Broken elevator, long waits, keycards not working, WiFi not working, rooftop closed, no hot water, and extremely loud at night. Cute, but not worth it.
- 3/5
Beautiful French inspired hotel. Unfortunately, elevators were not working in the room had no outward facing windows.
- 5/5
Will be coming back again, everything was amazing I wanted an hour for a toothbrush and when they finally came they brought me a razor to shave my legs.
- 5/5
Everything was clean and beautiful. The room wasn’t very big, but it was still very comfortable for a short stay. Would definitely recommend.
- 5/5
Super Nice
- 5/5
Very nice staff.
- 4/5
Very pleasant. Too much light in the room (emanating from the electronics on the ceiling and from under the door) and the bed was softer than I’m used to so it was difficult to get a good night’s sleep. With only one elevator in service the wait could be very long so I took the stairs to and from the 11th floor throughout my stay, which was fine since there was not a gym and I am in reasonable shape. All in all the hotel is charming and I got a good rate from Hotels.com so I was content with my choice.
- 5/5
Pros: Stylish, quiet, and incredibly clean hotel with cute vintage vibes. Comfy beds and friendly staff. Walking distance to tons of restaurants, bars, the convention center and the harbor. (Minor) Cons: No plug near the bed for my phone, not much storage, long waits due to slow vintage elevators (one of which seems to be broken).
- 4/5
Great stay but the elevator being out was a bit of a hassle.
- 3/5
Elevator issue gotta be fix… its a total work out. not a Hotel to rest as you gonna be running the stairs up and down evretime… unless you wanna wait long for slow elevator. fix this an hotel will make sence in the middle of gaslamp quarters
- 5/5
What a cute hotel! Staff was always very kind and helpful. Rooms were cute, really clean, and had good amenities. We had the smallest room and the space was super tiny, but we managed just fine. Everything was awesome. Only downside is valet parking is spendy, expect to hear the street sounds, and the old historic self open elevator is a bit of a hassle, especially when carrying luggage. But even after all that, I still give it 5 stars!
- 1/5
Super Tiny rooms for the price. Uncomfortable to move around in. You have to walk sideways to get between the TV and the bed. And I’m not obese. The shower is also tiny. One elevator didnt work. We found someone’s used sock underneath the bed. I’ll never be staying there again. Mostly because of the room size. I mean, if they really wanted to, they could expand the rooms, but they would have less money to squeeze out of the hotel.
- 2/5
Hotel appears to be clean , but if look at the windows or behind anything you can see that it is misleading. We had to schedule room service and they still did not come. Rooms are extremely small.
- 4/5
Place is centrally located in downtown San Diego. If you don’t mind small room, small bathroom and an inexpensive stay this is the place for you
- 5/5
Clean room nice staff
- 4/5
Great vibes ! Love the vintage style! Rooftop bar was the best part & super friendly staff ! One Elevator was down during but stairs were available.
- 5/5
Everything was wonderful. Perfect location!
- 5/5
Clean room
- 5/5
Incredibly friendly staff. Perfectly located. Clean & beautifully decorated. One of my fav Pali locations !
- 3/5
The hotel had a very cool 1920’s look and feel to it. I was staying there as part of a wedding party and we were able to get some great wedding photos all around the lobby and on the rooftop bar. My room was very clean and the amenities were very enjoyable. My only negative thing about the hotel is they had only one working elevator and even that was sketchy. I got stuck in the elevator between floors 2 and 3. Thankfully they were able to reset the elevator in a timely manner. But when I brought our luggage down on their luggage cart, the elevator got to the lobby floor and was not aligned evenly with the floor itself. It stopped about 3-4 inches up from the level floor. Felt like final destination could happen at any moment. Having said that, the hotel was a decent stay being down in the Gaslamp of SD for the price and location.
- 5/5
Very well appointed
- 2/5
Nice staff! However, the elevator situation is unreasonable. Two, 100+ year old elevators and one was down our whole stay. The other one was very unreliable and broke down multiple times in the span of two days. This is an 11-story hotel so good luck with your luggage if you’re on the 11th floor.
- 5/5
awesome hotel with an amazing rooftop
- 4/5
Friendly and helpful staff. Clean rooms. Ac unit in our room didn’t do much so we were left with a not so comfortable night of sleep. Nice rooftop.
- 4/5
Parking cueste casi igual que la habituación no fue lo mejor , pero igual volvería y buscaría otro parking por separado.
- 5/5
The room was clean. The Staff were great. Had optioned for food and drinks! The only con was the elevator. 1 of the 2 did not work.
- 5/5
Great breakfasts in the adjoining restaurant.
- 2/5
The staff is consistently responsive, polite, and hospitable, which made the stay pleasant on a service level. The building itself is a quaint, old-world ambiance that feels unique and memorable. However, the two original 1913 elevators present significant challenges. One has been out of service for over two months, leaving only a single vintage “birdcage” elevator in operation. There are no bells or alerts when it arrives, so you must watch closely or risk missing it. The heavy outer door (easily 50+ lbs) must be manually pulled open and held—often with a foot or help from another person—while sliding the inner gate. The handle is awkward and difficult to grip, and the process is cumbersome both entering and exiting. Watch your fingers and the slamming door on the way out. With more than 2-3 people or any luggage, it becomes a tight, contortionist-like experience (think Tetris). Waiting times can be long. The guest rooms are very small but spotlessly clean. Storage is extremely limited: only space to hang 4-5 clothing items, with nowhere dedicated for a suitcase or larger bag. As a solo business traveler, I ended up living out of my suitcase, which took up half the bed. There are no hooks for additional items. Overall, this property shines for leisure visitors
- 5/5
Great place if you are into the party scene.
- 5/5
Love it
- 5/5
Love love love ! Will definitely stay here again! Their staff is so nice even valet staff were so sweet.
- 5/5
Adorable hotel!
- 5/5
The room was vintage but still fancy. I loved the decor, walkable to everything, and cozy
- 5/5
It’s a very cozy and clean place. Just love it!
- 5/5
A wonderful hotel! Great location and fantastic staff!
- 1/5
The decor was very cute and trendy, but a closer look made us double take. Our room was dirty, with several drinks already half empty in the mini fridge when we got there. The bathroom window did not close and was open the entire night, which made sound horrible. We could hear everything happening on the street, which lasted until 3 AM because it was a Saturday night. The mattress was awful and flat. The steamer didn’t work. We wouldn’t stay here again and I’m disappointed that we spent so much money on our one night.
- 1/5
There was not even a bottle of water in the room. The AC didn’t work and we had to change our room. I don’t suggest this hotel.
- 4/5
Room was very humid if swamp cooler was not in use. Next time I’ll request a different room.
- 4/5
Perfect spot for work trip! Cute. Historic. Completely a must-stay.
- 3/5
The water heater did not consistently work in our room. We had to contact the front desk prior to anyone being able to take a hot shower. The front desk staff worked to get the system reset. But having to do this multiple times per day became frustrating during our stay. Upon check out, we were told the water heater was now being replaced. I do not understand why we had to be inconvenienced during our stay because of a hotel mechanical issue. We were never offered to relocate to another room, but were given a discount upon check out. I hope the staff learned from our experience and will do better for other guests when a water heater goes out again.
- 4/5
Great location in San Diego, very friendly staff/valet service. The valet service was a bit pricey but I was happy to not worry about finding parking nearby. The rooms are small but cozy. If you are worried about sound, it can be loud on weekend nights. The elevator was truly such an antique gem, but difficult if you need to go up or down with multiple bags or luggage so be cautious if you have issues or are not able bodied. Overall a cute and lovely place to stay.
- 3/5
Hot water went out for 24 hrs in my room. I had to call to tell them since it did not resolve on its own.
- 3/5
Clean rooms!!!
- 3/5
Good for one night only. Any longer than that good luck. AC didn’t work in half the hotel including our room, their elevator is over 100 years old, lift style. Heavy door, hard to open exposd gate, good luck getting out unscathed! Oh and only 1 side worked, and they have known this, so we had to hoof it up 9 stories because we werent going to wait 30 minutes every time we needed it. The rooms are tiny, our toilet didn't flush, I fixed it because I was not going to wait for the staff. The pillows were flat, the bedding was super cheap, you could feel it, the mattress was lumpy, the bed frame was broken, the upstairs roof top bar was closed for a private event, we were never told, literally no amenities to make this place the price it is. So we won't be staying here again. It says its 4 stars should be 3 max. The atmosphere is cool but thats what bars and restaurants are for.
- 4/5
Very nice staff good location
- 3/5
Yes, there were shops nearby.

- 5/5
Very cool
- 5/5
Very clean, located in a great area, friendly staff
- 3/5
Awesome location, that is why I decided to stay here. BUT the AC in my room was not working properly and they were booked so I couldn't change rooms. The rooms and smaller than most hotels in the same area. No desk/table or chairs. But the staff was amazing from the front desk to the maintenance guy who came in and helped. The customer service aspect is great. The shower was also great. Unfortunately I don't think I would stay here again, only because I travel for work and need the desk to work.
- 4/5
Very nice boutique hotel. Staff were very nice and the French diner was very good. Even though the 110 year old elevator was very noisy and annoying at times, it definitely adds a cool element to the place. They just need to get the other one working. Cold water cold water cold water! All three mornings I was forced to take a cold shower because the “system” had to be reset so from my experience it either doesn’t work or hot water doesn’t make its way up the the 10th story. I would recommend and come back if they got these minor issues under control.
- 4/5
Hotel was cute. Elevator is very old and runs slow. Staff was great. On site restaurant was good. Amazing location.
- 4/5
When to the bar for a drink. Bartender was nice love the aesthetics. Didn’t get to get breakfast but will try it next time. Also when I took a shower the water was barely warm and ended up taking a cold shower. Other than that I had a good stay.
- 2/5
Room was dirty, water takes forever to get hot and the worst part is we had to take the stairs everyday because the elevator was taking forever.
- 5/5
Good spot staff was great
- 5/5
Loved this hotel! I was nervous due to the mixed reviews around the elevator and air conditioning. The elevator is definitely slow and can take time but we were there for leisure so we packed our patience. It was pretty cool to use but sometimes would take 5-10 minutes before we could access it. We had issues with our ac but the engineering team was awesome and fixed it right away. The room was clean and so unique, we loved it but glad I was aware of the quirks of the hotel before booking. We would stay again for sure!
- 5/5
Awesome hotel
- 3/5
No functioning hot water during my stay and there were issues with the lock on the door
- 2/5
I reserved a room with a queen size bed, and was given a room with a double/full bed. I know the difference between the two, my partner and I could barely fit in the bed. 1 elevator was down the entire weekend, so leaving the hotel took forever from the 8th floor. When trying to sleep you can hear other guest coming& going, woke us up every time. On the morning of checkout, there was no hot water, had to take a cold shower. I won’t be booking this hotel again
- 3/5
The staff is super polite and friendly and helpful. There is not scheduled room cleaning so you have to inconveniently call at least a day ahead for it which was very unpleasant for me. The elevator is incredibly archaic and its charm wears off quick especially if you have a lot of things you have to carry with you. Perhaps the worst part was we had cold water for a day, in which the staff fixed while we were out. The three stars is mainly for the staff which were outstanding but overall I would not stay here again.
- 4/5
I felt bad wasting over 20 minutes of running water just to get lukewarm water for a quick shower. I called up the hotel housekeeping number to complain and was told to just wait for the warm water to come. Wasting a lot of water just for waiting for lukewarm water is a shame. I'm not sure if this problem is limited to my room (322) or is more widespread. I sent an email to Kyle Sprague to let him know of the issue. The aircondition is excellent and the room was clean.I would visit again.
- 5/5
I had an amazing stay at this hotel. They sent several text messages beginning before I even arrived and throughout my stay asking how things were going and how I was doing. They were always responsive as well. The front staff was very sweet and friendly. The hotel is clean and very nicely decorated and furnished. The room was clean and had everything I needed. I would definitely stay here again.
- 4/5
Cute place but the restroom is literally in front of the bed!!! lol..a bit odd if you need to use the restroom..lol
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
The Room was very clean, although small, it was cozy and the bed was very comfortable. no real place to work, but definitely was relaxing. perfect location to the convention center and Hyatt Grand Manchester.
- 3/5
More amenities in the room like a usable fridge or microwave, more counter space or a desk in the room. More than one working elevator as it was very slow.
- 5/5
Fun hotel- cozy rooms, great history of building, and awesome rooftop!
- 4/5
Room was clean and quite. It was a historic building with all that comes with that. The room was large however it lacked places to put items like clothes, toiletries, suitcases, no surfaces for make-up or jewelery. Basically it's just a room with a bed.
- 4/5
Room was nice with a few exceptions
- 5/5
very clean and very helpful staff
- 4/5
Friendly Staff, Nice Boutique hotel Centrally located for all the sites of San Diego
- 5/5
The front desk staff were really kind and helpful! We loved the Diptyque products in the room!
- 5/5
Clean room, staff were very nice and accommodating! Would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
Staff was amazing and accommodating. The renovations were beautiful. Vibe was super classy and cute. Location is everything if you are staying downtown San Diego, and it was perfect walking distance to almost anything downtown and, if needed, the trolley in Gaslamp. Smaller rooms, but really perfect for a couple. Quiet and intimate boutique hotel despite the bustling city outside. I would recommend grabbing parking at one of the many nearby garages. They did a great job making our vacation a true experience. The guest only rooftop was a highlight!! Wish it was open later at night, as they close it around 9pm. Overall, this stay exceeded our expectations!!
- 5/5
The staff were super nice.
- 5/5
Amazing staff overall, Rain and Erica at the front desk stood out, the cleaning service ran throughout my entire stay and every amenity in my room was excellent.
- 2/5
Small room,
- 3/5
Room was nice, best part was the location for sure
- 4/5
Nice getaway elevator interesting
- 5/5
The gotel was amazing. Rge sraff was vert kind and professional. We will definitely be back soon.
- 5/5
Enjoyed our stay! Hotel is beautiful and historic; we loved that the history of the building was kept intact! Rooms were small but clean and comfortable. The rooftop deck is amazing and is a must during your visit!
- 4/5
The room, though small by today's standards, was clean and tidy. My only wish for the room would be a comfortable chair to sit in. Aside from that, the bed and bedding was comfortable, the bathroom quiant, and the service excellent.
- 3/5
Cons - we requested more towels/a robe, which never came. Elevator is a historical relic, which is interesting but not convenient for traveling. Couldn’t accommodate a 30-minute late checkout. Pros - Diptheque products, one really nice, helpful front desk rep, and accommodated an early check-in.
- 3/5
Elevators are a cool novelty but extremely inconvinient. Especially since 1 of the 2 was broken our entire stay.
- 5/5
Such a beautiful unique hotel that is over 100 years old. The room was very cute and clean and with a huge bathroom. Gas lamp district is right around the corner and there is amazing restaurants everywhere. Make sure you visit the roof where you get an amazing full San Diego city view.
- 3/5
The room also had no views at all. It only had one window that faced a wall. The “bathroom” sink was in the middle of room, very weird. I’ve stayed at the Palihotel in Santa Barbara and it was lovely. Definitely not the same experience this time. ELL not be coming back.
- 5/5
Overall great atmosphere and staff really nice!
- 2/5
No working elevator most of the time was a bummer. The staff was hardly apologetic for it. It was also lacking and what was there was had to find in regards to electrical outlets for charging.
- 4/5
My only complaint is the elevator. It’s old, so it takes its time going up. If you’re into that vintage feel, you might enjoy it, but after a couple of rides, it does become a bit annoying.
- 5/5
Room was very clean, friendly staff
- 4/5
Room was fully remodeled and clean.
- 5/5
The decor in the hotel is unique/tasteful with a touch of history - I love the plaque of "fastest in the world" in the elevator. My room was very comfortable. The staff was helpful/polite/friendly. The rooftop was a beautiful spot to enjoy a perfect SD day. I'm really glad that I stayed here and would love to come back soon.
- 5/5
Charming decor, such kind staff, and a slice of heaven on the roof!
- 4/5
Room was clean and very comfortable. Staff was friendly and attentive.
- 5/5
Would absolutely stay here again
- 5/5
Cute hotel perfect location for bar hopping in gaslamp. Definitely recommend
- 2/5
The elevators were not working and we stayed on the 8th floor! Not ideal!
- 5/5
My room was spotless and extremely charming, but the best part was the French restaurant next door. Also, there are beautiful long tables to work from during the day, which, if you are traveling alone makes you feel part of a community.
- 5/5
If you’re looking for personality and San Diego history in the Gaslamp District, this hotel delivers. From the vintage 1913 elevator to the cozy rooms, I truly enjoyed my stay here. The rooftop patio is a showstopper and offers a great place to relax and see the city below. Staff were courteous, the restaurant lovely, and the front desk very helpful. The bed is comfy and the in-room bar fridge is stocked. I loved the vibe here, but it’s not for you if you don’t appreciate the quirky bits that come along with a heritage building.
- 5/5
The building is over 100 years old, but the modern renovations kept the old world charm, while creating a comfortable environment.
- 5/5
We were given an upgrade to a beautiful, large suite. The hotel is beautiful with a great location, and the rooftop terrace is amazing!
- 5/5
Very clean and the stuff is friendly
- 5/5
Everyone was kind and helpful.
- 5/5
Nice
- 3/5
The room were clean/ staff was awesome. Location amazing, but the elevator situation was really bad. 2 elevator and 1 was broken. We waiting about 25 minutes. We ultimately took the stairs. 6 floors.
- 4/5
The rooms were clean, the staff was very friendly. I would stay there again
- 3/5
I’ve stayed in Palihotels before so despite the reviews I wanted to try it myself. Before I even got to my room I was stuck on the elevator…the doors on the vintage lift are super heavy and only one elevator was working so it was a wait every time (it wouldn’t be bad if I wasn’t on the 9th floor) the queen hotel room is extremely tiny, you can’t even open your luggage without it hitting the wall, but didn’t matter as much bc I unpacked and was able to tuck my luggage next to the AC. Apart from that staff is great, restaurant/bar was too as well as the food. Just be aware if you’ve stayed at Palihotels before this one is more on the smaller side.
- 5/5
Good location but the highlight Is the staff 10*
- 4/5
loved t
- 4/5
Clean room and ambience overall. Friendly staff during times of inconvenience.
- 4/5
The only reason I’m not providing 5 stars is because the hotel only has two elevators, though they’re historic and operate like they did back in 1913, minus the elevator man…. Haha one of the elevators was none operational. Hopefully this issues gets fixed ASAP.
- 5/5
Absolutely in love with this hotel and our room. Every detail feels thoughtful, refined, and welcoming. A place that makes you want to stay a little longer and come back again.
- 5/5
Best staff Only avoid from street room
- 4/5
Check in/out was easy. Staff was friendly. Had issues with the getting the AC working at first and the engineer came within 15-20 minutes to fix it. The rooms are small but you’re really just there to sleep and shower so it’s okay. The elevators were very vintage and had to wait a few minutes. There’s a cafe/restaurant at the hotel that my friends said had good drinks and coffee. If you’re looking for a central place in gaslamp to stay, this is it. One block away from tacos el gordo and the coin op!
- 3/5
Room is very small, tv doesn’t work, had to switch rooms because the AC was broken
- 5/5
Very noisy bar across the street.
- 4/5
The breakfast was fine nothing too special. Unfortunately, they do not offer room service for breakfast but the staff were able to accommodate an exception for me.
- 5/5
Overall great experience and I’ll have this hotel at the top of my list.
- 4/5
Elevators need updating… outdated and two (2)?heavy doors that have to be opened in person.
- 5/5
Fun, charming, vintage hotel. The staff was friendly. Check in was quick and easy, and the bed was comfy. The room was a little tight, but that didn't bother us. It was a very fun stsy!
- 1/5
Second of all the pictures you see on the website are a lie the rooms are beyond tiny, I felt so claustrophobic I thought I was going to die. My room didn't even have a window, I asked them to be moved to another room and they ignored me. Also the elevator was beyond an Antique not a place for older people. Place needs to be condemned. felt so cloclaustrophobic
- 5/5
No
- 5/5
Loved this hotel! Staff was great, coffee in the morning was wonderful! Had a great room as well. Will definitely be staying here again.
- 3/5
The hotel is cute and the staff is great. The problem is really with the room… it’s way small, the shower is tiny and the drain backs up,
- 4/5
Staff was courteous. Issue with AC was promptly addressed.
- 5/5
Enjoyed our stay very much! Right in the middles of Gaslamp and very close to the zoo and Belmont park. The rooftop was beautiful and the rooms were very clean, loved aesthetic. Had a nice view of the city and of the quarter from our room. Staff was very nice and attentive! Definitely recommend
- 4/5
Courteous staff and clean room. Only negative was the street noise until 2am but it was to be expected.
- 3/5
As pictured the room was quite small, but cozy and cute! I’m all for aesthetic stays and historical elements, but the cleanliness was not up to par. There was hair left in the shower, scratched up walls, and some kind of smell in the room upon arrival. Aside from that, the bed was super comfy and sheets were crisp and clean (thank goodness). Unfortunately the little things like slight stains on the robes, towels, and shower curtain will make you feel quite uncomfortable on a vacation. Wouldn’t recommend for those of us who are used to luxury, but nice if you need a quick stay and won’t be in the hotel too much. Side note: there are hardly any windows in the rooms so you may feel claustrophobic. Not the type of hotel you stay in for long periods of time. But the lobby and diner were beautifully decorated and we still had a lovely time, staff was kind! Fun for a quick trip, it’ll do the trick. But not recommended for long stays.
- 3/5
The staff and hotel were very nice. The room though wasn’t soundproof enough for the surrounding area, which is quite bustling at night.
- 4/5
The room was far smaller than it appears online. A size of the room in sq footage would help. The bedroom shower didn’t drain efficiently.
- 5/5
Very unique hotel
- 5/5
We didn’t dine in the hotel.
- 5/5
We had a wonderful visit. Absolutely nothing to complain about, we did have a little hiccup with our room but the customer service at the front desk were willing to make it right and were beyond amazing as they went above and beyond to correct it. The showers and bed were very pleasant. It was very loud being that its location is in the Gaslamp District which is party town, they keep the building safe and never felt uncomfortable. But it is loud out there at night.
- 4/5
Everyone on the staff were very nice. They were quick to respond to our requests. The was very clean. The elevators were questionable, and shower does not heat up very fast. Loved the daily treats.
- 4/5
First time staying at this hotel and it was so cute! Definitely had that boutique/old fashioned feel which I love. If you’re used to more modern places I suggest you choose another place to stay. The only down part was our ac didn’t work the best. Other than that rooms were very clean bed was comfy and front desk & valet were super attentive.
- 4/5
The room was very clean and all the staff were very friendly. The dinner at St. James diner was bistro was delicious. My only objection with the hotel was that it was not clearly stated that there was no working window or way to get some ventilation into the room so it got very stuffy very fast.
- 4/5
The restaurant was amazing, we were hungry and the burgers hit the spot, great cocktails too. My final, minor complaint was the hotel started a text chat with me in the morning, I asked if there was EV charging available and still haven’t gotten a response. Don’t bother me if you’re not going respond, what a waste of time!
- 5/5
Always a delight to stay here in this amazing historic building with very comfy rooms.
- 5/5
Staff was excellent. Lumpy mattress; small bathroom. Convenient location.
- 4/5
Friendly staff. The elevator is a bit interesting. Very old school.
- 4/5
Excellent location, wonderful staff.
- 4/5
Their parking was off-site and that wasn't specified on their site but otherwise lovely stay here. Location wise it was right in the middle of the main downtown scene so that was fun and convenient! Expect about $40 for parking overnight if you don't do their $65 valet parking.
- 4/5
room spotless, staff amazing, wasn't aware of parking bill till i arrived. only one small trash can in whole room
- 4/5
Great stay, lovely staff, and awesome atmosphere
- 3/5
Rooms were small but nice for a historic hotel. Staff was great. The elevator is a death trap. If you need any sort of physical assistance this is not the place.
- 1/5
The room was clean but super small for it having a king size bed in it. The shower was really small and clogged. The drain seem to be clogged. The room was really noisy. The AC did not work properly so the room felt stuffy during our stay which was thankfully only for 1 night
- 5/5
Very good
- 5/5
Clean and nice room - nice ambiance at the hotel with excellent and service minded staff!
- 5/5
So cozy, staff were friendly and helpful, over all a good stay would recommend!
- 5/5
Nice room, was smaller than expected but honestly not bad for the price
- 5/5
I enjoyed the atmosphere and found the location convenient and around many walkable spots.
- 3/5
Although the front desk staff were always, very friendly and supportive, and the rooftop deck was amazing, i had to lower the stars to 3 out of 5 due to the sleepless nights. Many businesses were closed on Thanksgiving so the noise at night was not too bad. However Friday night i was woken up by the noise and Saturday night it went all through the night until 4:30 am. Heavy base music, singing, screaming, etc. The windows dont seem to be double glazed. I left from my short vacation exhausted. I booked through Expedia, maybe there is better room placement if you book direct. Again, I adored the hotel but lack of sleep ruined it.
- 5/5
Second time staying at the Pali. Rooftop was cute and beautiful view. Great location heart of gaslamp and close to infamous tacos el Gordo walk around the corner. Great stay.
- 5/5
Staff was great, clean old hotel
- 5/5
Checked in a bit late (tip??) and got an upgrade to a suite. So my room was big and on the second floor, I did not have to use the antique elevator which everybody complains about for no reason other than for pleasure, very fun ride. The building is historic and I liked learning about its history. The attached restaurant is cozy and have good food. Wiuld recommend and stay here again!
- 2/5
Also quite noisy - they seem to realise this with supplying earplugs but it isn’t ideal. My room had no window (air conditioning unit was placed in front of it) yet there was still lots of light from the street coming in my room due to the shutters surrounding the unit - bring an eye mask. Overall would have been okay if I didn’t lose an item of clothing but all these factors combined have contributed to my rating.
- 4/5
Elevators took a min of 10 min each time you needed to go in or out. Had to take stairs 6 floors.
- 5/5
I wish there was parking included but I also know its a boutique hotel and downtown San Diego does not have great parking options
- 5/5
Super cute boutique hotel! This place is full of history & it's right in the heart of Gaslamp. Parking is pricey, but honestly you don't even need a car because you can walk anywhere & everywhere you want. Loved the unlimited swedish fish - nice touch!
- 5/5
Great location !
- 5/5
Great staff and beautiful hotel with rooftop!
- 5/5
Great service. Good selection ok. Quality of food was very good.
- 5/5
The decoration is super nice and the atmosphere is super cozy.
- 5/5
Very pleasent staff
- 2/5
Staff was kind but the rooms were so small and cramped. Elevators took a long time and difficult to navigate with large luggage. It was LOUD all through the night. I also do not recommend the French Diner downstairs.
- 4/5
Good stay
- 5/5
Nice and clean hotel and excellent service. Small room but enough for what I needed. No desk for if you need to work during your stay.
- 5/5
staff
- 5/5
Palihotel was wonderful! Love the decor and the vibe. My wife and I felt like we were transported to the 1920s.
- 5/5
As soon as I arrived the staff were welcoming and attentive. I appreciated the check in text staff did throughout the day to ensure I needed everything for my stay. It was walking distance to everything in downtown San Diego. Would recommend.
- 5/5
Clean Room
- 2/5
Window was facing wall of opposite building. Extremely noisy due to AC units outside the window. Hardly any natural light. No desk in the room.
- 5/5
Excellent lady on the front desk, Renne, helped with any queries or things to do around town, great location, nice rooms, very comfy bed
- 4/5
Room was clean and the hotel is decorated cute. Rooftop access is gorgeous
- 5/5
Room was spotless and location great.
- 5/5
Beautiful, quiet and clean.
- 4/5
Clean room.
- 5/5
Awesome hotel. A unique experience.
- 4/5
nice place to stay might be a little small for some people but i enjoyed the cozy feeling.
- 1/5
Bad experience with check in
- 5/5
Wonderful staff so helpful. Loved our stay in an elegant room with adjoining sofa bed.
- 5/5
I loved the hotel , our room was small but very cozy , the staff very helpful and friendly.
- 3/5
The reason I’m giving this stay 3 stars, though, is because of the noise coming from downstairs and nearby businesses. I was on the 8th floor and still wasn’t able to sleep due to how loud it was at night. It honestly sounded like my windows were open, but they weren’t, I checked several times. There just didn’t seem to be any insulation to block out the noise… I understand that the hotel is in an older building (the elevator definitely shows that charm), but the lack of soundproofing made the night really difficult. If noise is a concern, this is something to be aware of. Otherwise, the hotel itself and the staff were great.
- 3/5
The bathroom window did not have a latch and continued to open even when closed. This resulted in rooftop air conditioner noise and street noise during the night.
- 5/5
Everything about this hotel was great! Friendly staff, views from the rooftop bar, attentiveness of staff, clean and cute rooms!
- 5/5
Clean room
- 4/5
Good location.
- 5/5
staff and hotel are great
- 5/5
Enjoyed my stay. We didn’t dine at the restaurant but the bed was nice and comfortable and the room was clean.
- 5/5
Very clean and comfortable. Nicely decorated. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Staff was nice. This was the perfect hotel for a short stay and we highly recommend this place!
- 4/5
Room was smaller than expected but still great. Service was fantastic. Room for improvement on a place to put garbage in the room or in the lobby. Valet was quite slow this weekend and we were late to our plans due to lack of valet workers. Would still recommend to friends!
- 4/5
Convenient location in Gas lamp District
- 5/5
Very nice staff, elevator was a challenge though
- 4/5
We arrived later in the evening and the valet stand was put away, so we were left to figure things out which in downtown San Diego is not the cheapest or most convenient thing to do. The hotel was trendy and the staff was friendly. Our room was cute but not that comfortable. The bathroom was tiny. The Diptyque toiletries were cool and smelled lovely but the bathroom was tiny - very very tiny. Unfortunately, one elevator was broken and the other elevator is really small, so we ended up taking the stairs more often than not. (We were on floor five) I know I’m coming across as a bit negative, and I hate leaving so so reviews. I really want to like this hotel more. Again, the staff is super friendly and the hotel is chic in a rustic boutique kinda way. It just wasn’t for us.
- 5/5
room was super cute, small but expected. the only thing we had an issue with was they were down to one elevator which made getting up to our room and leaving the hotel a bit of an inconvenience. other than that, great stay
- 5/5
Clean and cozy room, staff was great, elevator was the only inconvenience.
- 5/5
Nice place
- 5/5
We stayed in the king room. It was comfortably cozy and clean.
- 5/5
Great hotel, really nice staff, only complaint is the elevator was really slow, other than that, great stay!!
- 4/5
Cute hotel only one elevator was working and because it’s so slow it takes forever you end up having to take the stairs.
- 5/5
Cozy clean room. Great location. Really nice staff and bartenders.
- 4/5
Staff was very nice. Room was very clean. The one thing I can say is that I wish both elevators were active. I understand the historical value of these elevators but most of my stay i was using the stairs and I was on the 9th floor:)
- 5/5
This is the most beautiful boutique hotel. A step back in time but with all of the modern amenities.
- 2/5
This hospital is not friendly for disabled or elderly people.
- 5/5
Great place to stay!
- 5/5
There wasn't free breakfast advertised just a suggested French restaurant next door, and I didn't try it while there. But it looked good!
- 5/5
The room was very clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful.
- 2/5
no windows in our room, we felt very claustrophobics and had to leave. Also, very few plug ins for devices. The coffee pot was not plugged in and we had to carry it to the bathroom to find a plug.
- 3/5
Room was ok. Elevator was terrible. Dining at restaurant/bar was expensive and I didn't care for their menu. Parking at $60 per night seemed excessive. Too many homeless people in the streets near it.
- 3/5
Parking is only valet at $65 a night. There is parking
- 3/5
Rooms are very small. The walls are thin and yoi can hear everything. 65 dollars parking, there is no hotel parking like wverywhere else so be ready. Didnt like this hotel i will not be back.
- 5/5
Location location location!! Loved how close this spot was to everything. Clean room and great staff. Rooftop was awesome too.
- 2/5
Great staff but room was horrible and so loud until 3am! Air conditioning sounded like it was going to blow up. We were not happy and extremely disappointed after a previous stay.
- 5/5
What stood out was the rooms, overall hotel interior design was beautiful and staff was helpful and friendly. Definitely a hotel to stay at again.
- 5/5
Fantastic staff, great room! I would recommend bringing good shoes, the elevator always took a long time, so I ended up taking the stairs ground floor <> 5th floor. Saint James is a very good restaurant attached/adjacent to this location; I always had exceptional service and good quality of food.
- 5/5
Clean room, excellent staff and pleasant atmosphere
- 5/5
very nice staff, comfortable room, beautiful rooftop
- 5/5
Front desk was amazing! Rooms were immaculate! Great stay
- 5/5
Staff was great, property was very clean and the roof top bar has great views, Would highly recommend
- 4/5
The property itself it's very quaint and older but with a lot of charm. I actually really enjoyed the property. I unfortunately was there at a horrible time being as my shower tub wouldn't drain, the AC didn't work and one of the elevators broke. However, the employees could not have been more helpful. So I'm short, my stay was not pleasant but I think it was mor circumstantial than anything. Great rooftop bar and perfect location if you're headed out to the gaslamp district.
- 5/5
Clean, comfortable and all of the fabulous fragrances. French Diner had a wonderful breakfast!
- 5/5
Great hotel with character. In the heart of downtown.
- 5/5
It was amazing! Everyone was so nice and the whole vibe and aesthetic of it all was perfect!
- 5/5
staff was very friendly and hotel was clean
- 5/5
The room and amenities are lovely! An older hotel that has been renovated with great decor and nice bedding. They could use more hooks in the bathroom for towels and the ac rattled a bit during the night but it didn’t affect our stay. Would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Great staff and
- 4/5
This hotel is very cute! It has some historic charm but because of this, it lacks typical amenities like a pool and a gym. The room was small but the bathroom was nicely sized. The toiletries were Diptique which was lovely! The hotel was clean and the staff were very nice. I’d recommend it for the location as well.
- 4/5
The room was very cute and clean! It was on the smaller side but it was mainly booked for a place to sleep after a night out on the town so it was perfect!! The elevator was the only minor inconvenience since it was built in the 1930s and small, so we had to take the stairs to the 7th floor.. Overall I would definitely book another room here in the future!!!
- 5/5
Charming!
- 3/5
So hot. Check in area was hot. Had to go in their restaurant to wait for check in. Check I. was strange. There is no wriggle room on the 3:00 check in time. None. They really wait until 3:00 to start checking people in. Massive line of people. Our room would have been fine but Air conditioner didn’t work and it was super loud on top of that.
- 5/5
Easy check out. The room was clean and quiet. I absolutely love the fragrance the lobby has when you’re coming down from your room.
- 5/5
Staff was friendly and helpful
- 5/5
Great place to stay!! expect small spaces & only one working elevator! but i promise it doesn't damper the mood at all! most convenient & safest feeling place for first timer in Gaslamp SD!
- 4/5
Great location
- 4/5
Very cute boutique hotel. I stayed in a queen and it was very small, would be difficult with 2 adults. The elevator is original so it’s a 2 man job to open the door, get luggage in. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. It’s within walking distance to downtown which is a plus. Valet parking is very expensive at $65/night and there’s no self park option through the hotel. Lots to choose from with the minibar/snacks. AC wall unit makes a lot of noise and it blows directly towards the head of the bed. Overall, I give it a 2.5/5.
- 5/5
Yes and super great staff
- 5/5
everything was great
- 4/5
Bar was stocked. Breakfast was okay
- 5/5
Our stay was nice and comfortable the theme is cute the upstairs bar view was absolutely beautiful Walkable distance to everything absolutely a night to remember full of bars and clubs and restaurants if you want to relax in a quiet place that is not a place to stay in.
- 5/5
We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The room was cozy and comfortable. Chic design throughout and a historic property. We had great service and staff was welcoming and accommodating for our early check-in request. Very convenient location. The restaurant downstairs is delicious also. Minor downside was a slightly noisy AC and just one elevator working- it’s an old-fashioned one and the doors are kind of heavy. Overall I would stay again for sure!
- 5/5
Wondeful..we will stay again.
- 5/5
Staff was friendly and clean
- 3/5
Only complaint is the noisy environment and uncomfortable mattress
- 5/5
A hotel with much character in the Gaslamp Quarter of Dan Diego...a fabulous roof top patio......an attached restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. An excellent location from which to visit the San Diego sites.
- 5/5
It was OK. Quite expensive but convenient
- 2/5
Our TV didn’t work after calling the front desk 2x with no help. Also could hear everything in other rooms. Paper thin walls
- 5/5
It was amazing
- 3/5
Spacious Elevator is antiquated, super slow and a challenge to open. We struggled getting our luggages in and out of the elevator. The shower head in our room didn't work well at all, water only trickled down from it.
- 3/5
No shampoo and body wash
- 1/5
Fleas in the bedroom, A/C's air conditioners did not work, elevator did not work and had to use the stairs up and down. I was told I will receive a credit back and no fees for the night stay. It has been almost 2 weeks and I have not received a credit back and was charged another 2 fees for reason unknown.
- 5/5
Clean room. Slightly smaller bathroom than I expected. Very comfortable bed and just enough room. Very fun historic hotel with a beautiful lobby. The manual elevator was an interesting treat. The staff was very accommodating and helpful.
- 5/5
Clean room, friendly staff, comfortable bed.
- 4/5
Lovely cozy room, but AC unit very loud
- 4/5
While the staff was very nice & helpful, the rooms are very small-smaller than I expected after choosing a room online. The bathroom showed signs of wear. We heard every door on the floor slam shut each night. Bed was comfy and room clean.
- 2/5
Staff was very friendly. Loved the vintage style however, the room is a lot smaller than I thought it would be. There is no counter space other than where the coffee machine & cups are. The elevator doors are very heavy & only 1 was working.
- 1/5
hot in a matter of 30 minutes . The noise was horrible, you could hear every door slam shut every 15 minutes with people using the stairs, so if sleep is what you are looking for don’t stay here.
- 5/5
Friendly staff and nice decor
- 4/5
The only minus about this hotel was close to broadway where too many homeless reside otherwise overall good place to stay
- 3/5
In the room was no shower gel in the dispenser, not even a handsoap. Glass bottle in the room too expensive ($13 each) Expensive for what they offer. They intend to preserve the classic style of the hotel and it looks beautiful.
- 1/5
Room was not cleaned when requested and no fresh towels. Lift out of order. No internet for duration of stay. And air conditioning did not work. Staff unhelpful. Still waiting to be compensated for having to purchase internet elsewhere. Plus unknown charge on bill. No explanation and no invoice provided
- 1/5
I booked the hotel for my daughter. When my daughter tried to check in, her credit card limit was not adequate to cover the entire booking for a week. Unfortunately, the hotel's policy did not allow me to pay by phone or online. They wanted someone to be there in person with a credit card and an ID. It was very frustrating. How could I travel from Michigan to San Diego within a couple of hours to be there when my daughter was trying to check in in the evening? Hotel staff did not even consider the unique situation and allowed me to pay over the phone or online, when we can pay online or over the phone anywhere in the country or the world. I talked to the staff and tried to explain the unique situation, but they did not care. After trying to get their help for more than 2 hours and failing, I reached out to a couple of friends, and one of them could find a friend in San Diego to go to the hotel and help my daughter checked into the hotel.

When I arrived at check in I was told that the hotel was having some minor electrical issues and could cancel my reservation without penalty. The issues seemed minor so I had no problem keeping my reservation and was surprised find out my room had been upgraded. I had a wonderful stay and did not encounter a single issue. I would definitely stay here again and I appreciated the honesty from the hotel about the potential for issues to make sure I was making an informed decision.

The staff deserves major credit, especially Ina at the front desk, who was so kind and helpful from check-in to check-out. The location couldn’t be better — everything I needed was either a short walk away or a quick Uber ride (never more than $20). The on-site restaurant was another highlight. The manager was clearly hands-on, making sure guests were taken care of even during the busy rush. Plus, the entire place is an Instagram dream — seriously, every corner is a photo op if you’re into capturing chic, content-ready vibes. Highly recommend for anyone traveling solo or looking for an affordable, stylish stay in San Diego.

However, there are a few things that we noticed during our stay that made the experience a little less enjoyable. First, having only one of two elevators working and waiting a while for it to arrive was tiring. I understand the building is older, however, when your room is on the 7th floor, the elevator becomes more necessary than not. We took the stairs a few times but it wasn't ideal. Second, the Wi-Fi was not connecting with my devices. I was talking with a friend who was also staying at the Palihotel, and he mentioned he wasn't able to either. However, he helped me based on what the front desk told him to do. Lastly, the air conditioner was not working. It definitely made a difference at night when it felt a little stuffy.

Close to downtown and bus

I booked this for an artist I work for and they got bed bugs, the photos are much nicer than the actual hotel. When you travel a lot for work its nice to have a boutique hotel but this really threw a wrench in the weekend. Do not stay here.

Staff was great location was great

We love the Palihotel group of properties and were really excited to try this new one. The rooftop is AMAZING and the quirky elevators from 1913 were fun, but there were some weird design flaws (such as the decades of paint made it literally impossible to close the bathroom window, so it was swung open with a drop down from the 8fth floor - there was no latch and no way to close it, even after calling the front desk). Overall a cute spot for the cost, as this was a fraction of what most Pali properties have been per night. The bar was also wonderful and we loved the cocktail selection.

Beautiful place with lots of character. Love the rooftop bar!

The hotel is amazing! The ambiance from the time you walk yp outside, to the lobby, and each hallway of every floor I walked on was great. The staff all greeted me, even if they were cleaning a room I walked by. It is in the heart of downtown and so easy to walk to so many places. I cannot recommend it enough!
- 3/5
Reason for low review: The rooms are small and dismal. Suites are dark and facing walls. The elevator while charming requires strength to open and when one is not working it takes a good 4-8 mins to arrive to the lobby. We had to leave after the first night as the AC in the building broke down and the night was restless and hot as there is no fan either. The free gummies beers are terrible lol :). All in all for a 4 star hotel our anniversary and birthday was not pleasant!

This hotel was perfect for my weekend in SD. Beautiful views from the roof and my room. I had breakfast and lunch in the diner and was impressed with how delicious the food was. Decor was pretty and unique and the hotel has friendly staff. It’s also right in the middle of Gaslamp and walkable to lots of things. I would definitely stay here again!

A lovely hotel, great staff. I will definitely stay here again.

Loved area. Air conditioner didn't work.
- 4/5
Very interesting place. Staff is great, area is very busy, great location, room is small.
- 2/5
The only way I could breathe was by opening the small bathroom window, and I ended up sleeping curled up in the bathtub for two nights. Ultimately, I had to cut my trip short because I could not stay in that environment any longer. The hotel really needs to address air quality — either through proper deep cleaning of carpets, or changing it completely and ventilation systems or by allowing windows to open. Otherwise, guests like me will continue to struggle, and even the staff working there may eventually develop health issues; they simply haven’t reached their threshold yet. On a positive note, the staff were friendly and accommodating, and the location is excellent.
- 5/5
Old-school hotel but good central location.
- 4/5
Nice hotel. Great service. Middle of the Gaslamp.
- 2/5
The elevator was not working and we were at floor 10, there was a hair in the bathtub, the phone in my room was not working either. The parking fee too expensive, everything else was good! Loved the restaurant area
- 3/5
1 of 2 small vintage elevators was out of service. Front dest seemed confused and unsure. Valet was under staffed. Dinner was very good all around.
- 3/5
The room was small but pretty. I've stayed at older boutique properties before, so I understand small, but I also know that small spaces require smart design. In this case, there was very little room for anything -- no space on the vanity, scant shelving (the little wardrobe shelf was full of overpriced minibar items), no room in fridge (again chock full of minibar for purchase). I don't know why hotel rooms always fail to put hooks on the walls. Strangely, there was also an absence of trash receptacles, both in the room and throughout the property, and no recycling whatsoever. Vintage elevator -- again, cool and charming if not exactly convenient -- especially since it broke, so we took the stairs a lot, which wasn't too bad on the 4th floor but I really felt for those staying on the 11th... Staff was friendly and helpful -- in particular, there was a young guy who brought us ice and whom we saw running around the hotel doing various tasks, who was especially welcoming and personable. Neighborhood was convenient and lively, with lots of dining drinking and entertainment options, but pretty hectic on weekend nights with the Padres in town. Rooftop offered beautiful views.
- 3/5
The place is cute. We like the elevator and the rooftop, walking distance for everything, but It's more like a weekend type of hotel, because you have no room for your luggage. My only thing that bothers me was, i had ask them to clean our room and it was not done. So they had to do it the next day and they didn't refilled our shampoo and body wash. We enjoyed it and this was birthday celebration getaway.
- 2/5
Hotel was okay for a night. Rooftop was great but Found things do be off during our stay, only one towel when asked for another was told there was none , kitchen ran out of food, ac was not functioning in room and front desk never answered the phone. Had to walk down to ask for a few things ( like the aforementioned towel)
- 4/5
Beautiful hotel, walking distance from Rady Shell. Stayed for one night at a reasonable price.
- 3/5
Located in the middle of the gas lamp district so it's pretty easy to get anywhere. The hotel staff is friendly and helpful. Only taking a star off because I requested room cleaning twice but my room was not cleaned.
- 5/5
Clean & cozy room, friendly staff, amazing restraunt and mini-bar options
- 5/5
It was a very beautiful hotel. Loved how vintage it was.
- 4/5
Room was absolutely stifling! Air conditioning did not cool it down at all! Could not sleep.
- 4/5
Our room was diabolically HOT! Could not get it cool no matter how low we set it. I love the property but would not stay again because of the too hot to sleep room.
- 5/5
McKenna was amazing! Answered all questions.
- 1/5
No rooftop access. They were 2 HOURS LATE for my check in. And on top of that my shower didn’t work and room didn’t have shampoo or soap. AND only 1 elevator was working. Never ever recommending this place
- 5/5
I'll stay there again for the next conference!
- 5/5
Nice property. Cool old school elevators. Nice friendly Staff
- 5/5
Nice room!
- 5/5
This was a beautiful property in the main hub of downtown. Loved the history of it, only down side was we never got to see the rooftop to hang out and have drinks since both days was completely rented out. The walls are thin (comes with the history of the building) so just be ready for that. Besides that, the staff and everything else in between was amazing!
- 5/5
Nice aesthetic and very friendly staff
- 3/5
Two elevators, but only one worked and they are the original old school ones, so only 6 people can squeeze in at a time. Needed to wait a couple of times for our turn. Couldn’t regulate our temp in our room, even after maintenance came to fix it… room was 79! Not comfortable!
- 5/5
Amazing location, great vibe, and clean vibe.
- 5/5
Beautiful and charming! Was pleasantly surprised with how cute the room and hotel was. Be wanted the rooms are VERY small but for my partner and I it wasn’t a deal breaker. Lots of entertainment and food close and walking distance so it’s perfect for a weekend getaway
- 3/5
The decoration is beautiful, very clean, and well-located.
- 5/5
We loved the hotel.
- 4/5
Wifi never worked, staff missed the instruction to clean the room once during the stay.
- 4/5
Clean room with just what you need. Convenient location too.
- 4/5
Room is next to housekeeping which is noisy.
- 4/5
The 100+ year elevator was quaint. The staff were exceptional!
- 4/5
Walkable to good food and some attractions. Multiple bus lines near. It was a bit toasty in our room, even with the A/C unit on. It may be because we were located on the top floor, and of course it is an older building so air circulation may not be that of newer. All in all, I would absolutely stay here again without hesitation. Great staff, food, drinks, decor and stay!
- 5/5
I love the decor

- 3/5
The aesthetic was unique and gorgeous. I did not like the whole valet situation. You have to leave your car so it can be parked three blocks down and having to call with 30 minute wait time. I like to have my car near and available at all times, my preference.
- 3/5
We were on the 10th floor, and one of the two elevators in the building was broken. People on every floor got frustrated and pushed both up and down, so the working elevator stopped on every floor, both going up and going down. We only took it up once, and climbed up and down every other time, with luggage to check out. The cool-sounding rooftop was booked for a wedding, but there was no signage. Congratulations from the bottom of my heart, and I wish you all the best 🎉🎉 I'd say on the hotel's part some signage would have helped prevent the embarrassment of walking up the rooftop entrance and a groomsman telling us it was reserved for the wedding. We don't want to interrupt anyone's wedding or be in their way. Great location though - we went to a show and it was so nice to be blocks away. And Tacos El Gordo is a must, despite the lines, and is a 3 min walk
- 4/5
Great hotel for the money. Excellent customer service
- 4/5
My husband and I stayed for one night. The hotel is so beautiful and we loved the rooftop view. The only complaint we have is there was this incessant tapping coming from the heater at night which made it impossible to sleep. We had a long drive the next day so that was extra annoying
- 3/5
I did not like that the AC seemed to not get cool enough. The onsite service was not great. Kind of dismissive. The texting service was convenient and responsive.
- 5/5
Beautiful historic hotel. Loved the rooftop bar and the little Bistro downstairs. The street outside felt safe to the South, not so much to the North. Would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5

Loved the stay. Good bar. Great location.

Decent room, nice restraurant, but the $65 fee per night for parking is absurd.

Super cute hotel with beautiful historic vibes. Favorite part was spending time on the rooftop.
- 5/5
would definitely stay again!
- 5/5
Very cute boutique hotel. Excellent service and walkable to so many restaurants.
- 5/5
Great older authentic hotel. They did a wonderful job styling it. My room was quiet (interior view). I opted for the slightly bigger room. It was great for two of us. Would stay here again! Very close to everything. Walk to Gaslamp and Padres etc.

Awesome place!!!

loved the wonderful historical hotel. front desk staff deserve six stars. they were beyond amazing everytime we came and went
- 5/5
Every staff member was a delight and so easy to talk to. Cute rooms, amazing food and drink options.
- 2/5
Took forever to go up and down elevators. Ended up walking up to the 8th floor because the wait was insane. For something marketed as a nice, bougie hotel, we didn’t even get a free bottle of water. The smeg and dipytique toiletries were a catfish for the hotel. I wouldn’t stay again
- 5/5
Excellent service
- 5/5
Charming and historic property. Excellent service. We had cocktails and a snack on rooftop. The view and vibe was lovely and we were not rushed and welcomed to stay as long as we wanted. The elevator is from 1913 and it didn’t bother us it was unique but I could see some people feeling claustrophobic
- 4/5
Loved the roof deck. The elevators are cool. Staff is really fine.
- 5/5
The decore style was cute, gave me spring Paris vibes
- 5/5
Best hotel we’ve ever stayed in….incredibly comfortable bed, great shower, big tv….easy walk to Petco park….great restaurant in the lobby, with best burgers ever on the happy hour menu…can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed it….treat yourself to this amazing, beautiful hotel

Beautifully decorated, historic charm

I would love to stay again.

The poverty was vibrant, the staff was amazing and wonderful. I felt exclusive. There was so much history, everybody was very hard. Every welcoming and inviting the room was so quaint and calm. I enjoyed amenities as well as all of the available extras. The ballet was phenomenal. And I highly recommend it, the room was clean. The staff was wonderful. I did not get a chance to check out the vineyard. The upstairs or take part in the breakfast but I was given plenty of recommendations by staff on where to visit in what to check out and where to grab some bites to eat even late at night. Amazing service inside and out highly recommend ten out of ten.
- 5/5
Close to Petco Park, staff was all amazing and place with such quaint charm.

I like the 1950’s vibe and staff was great.
- 5/5
The staff was really helpful
- 5/5
Amazing communication, extremely helpful, and super cute/unique vibe
- 3/5
I thought the hotel could use some improvements. Only one of the two elevators was working and it was slow. The rooms don’t have any views. The air conditioning unit in the room I had didn’t work properly. I called for maintenance and it slightly got better but still wasn’t blowing enough air out. On the other hand, the bed was very comfortable though and the convenience of the location and the bar/restaurant was nice.
- 4/5
The staff were all amazing and helpful.
- 4/5
The hotel did not clean our room and we had to ask for our room to be cleaned. The elevator was not very functional and it was inconvenient.
- 5/5
Absolutely loved the hotel. One of the most unique properties I’ve had the pleasure of staying in. The area around the hotel was a bit noisy and had some questionable people but never felt unsafe. Walked the neighborhood for dinner and also loved the rooftop bar.
- 5/5
great location - great style and vibe

Nice!

can hear street noise all night from the bars nearyby. AC right next to bed and blows cold air directly at you, had to turn AC off. Window faces a wall, cannot open windows.

not family friendly. small room, noisy and had slow elevators. the AC would stop working and was loud.

- 5/5
A really unique and adorable hotel right next to the food and bar scene down town. Adorable rooms and very convenient restaurant attached. Friendly staff and easy for ride share to find and drop off at.
- 3/5
I enjoyed the hotel other than the fact that the room still got really hot even though there was AC and I think the walls are a tad thin. I was waiting for the elevator and I can hear the TV in the room by the elevator.
- 5/5
The staff went above and beyond. Very friendly, at all hours( we came in at 2:30am) I would only say parking is pricey if you parked in their lot. We had issues with our air conditioner, but they sent a building engineer quickly and gave up free drinks for their restaurant. Very 50 styles in the rooms, which I loved. Again customer service was top notch.
- 4/5
Love the glass bottles globe lights.
- 5/5
Nice property
- 3/5
This was a cute little hotel. But the area was pretty rough. Noisy at night. But the big dealbreaker for me were the elevators. They were excruciatingly slow and the doors required at least one free hand to operate. By the second day I completely gave up and used the stairs. Seven flights. Each flight I’d go up, I would see exasperated people waiting for the elevator that literally would take 5+ minutes to arrive. Unfortunately I won’t be returning.

Shout out to Makena, Mcclane and Erica for being so kind and helpful!
