Reviews
The Chelsea Inn is a popular choice for travelers visiting San Francisco, with guests frequently praising its excellent location and secure parking. The hotel's spacious rooms and helpful staff are also often highlighted as positives. However, some guests have complained about noise from nearby bars and clubs, particularly on weekends, and a few have mentioned issues with cleanliness in the bathrooms.

I stayed during the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon and the location was perfect. Trek bike shop near by, food not far away and close to race start. The staff were great, rooms were big and bus stop out the front. It really was the best spot for this race. The bath was good post race as well. Overall highly recommend!

Was fortunate to have an inner room, which was extremely quiet. Room was clean. Furniture was dated, but clean. Bathroom somewhat sparsely stocked, but sufficient. Shower pressure low, but sufficient.

The property was centrally located in San Francisco and within walking distance of shops and restaurants. The staff was very nice and they explained parking very well and it was safe parking. The room was clean and neat and everything worked as it shit I don’t like driving in San Francisco. But the hotel was easy to access and I think they care about making their customers happy.

Great staff and good breakfast recommendation at nearby cafe, 'Home Plate'. I recommend the avocado toast - really tasty. Room was spacious and clean. There is no restaurant or bar, as advertised. No problem.

We were in a room on Fillmore street across from a beer garden. To no fault of the hotel, we had a lot of noise that made it hard to sleep until after the bar closed each night. That being said, the room was perfect, the car was safe, we had an incredible stay. Next time I’ll bring earplugs and will stay here again and again. Thank you all!

Spacious room, bathroom facilities, location With windows on Lombard street it might be somewhat noisy. Absence of a fridge is also a bit uncomfortable

A true value-for-money hotel. The location is very central, close to lively and vibrant streets, and it covers all the essential needs very well. One of the biggest advantages is definitely the free parking, which is a huge plus in this area. The only downside is that the hotel feels a bit outdated, so some modernization — especially in the bathrooms — would make the experience even better. Overall, considering the price and what it offers, I was very satisfied with my stay.

Location and the size of the room Its can be quite loud at night

The parking garage was kinda tight. Not much wiggle room. But it was worth it to have it gated and you can only open the gate with your room key.

The room was very clean, the bed was comfortable. The room was also pretty quiet for it being in town. But everything we planned to do was usually less than 15-20 minutes away. I also really liked the gated parking garage. The parking garage was kinda tight. Not much wiggle room. But it was worth it to have it gated and you can only open the gate with your room key.

Location is top notch, bathroom was fairly spacious. The hotel is a solid value for money. Don't expect 5-star services, but for the price everything was great. Lighting in a room was a bit dim, not a big concern though as I was mostly out sightseeing

Clean, comfortable, spacious room (double queen), friendly staff, close to many downtown attractions. Free parking a huge bonus! If you get an outside room, along Filmore, there is a Mexican restaurant and outside night club that are open until 3 am and weekends are very loud and rowdy. TV didn't drown out the noise and it was very hard to sleep.

Very large room with plenty of space and comfy beds. Parking is available on the premises. Staff was so nice! I love the area, which felt safe all over, and there are plenty of nearby cafes, bars, and restaurants. Location was amazing! Centrally located to almost every place we wanted to go. Walking distance to some and on major bus route to many others. Many great restaurants close by with a short walk. Beautiful bay window in the sitting area. Free parking was a HUGE plus. Very reasonable price for the room. Located in a charming area near the bay. Will definitely stay there again! A bit noisy because of traffic noise but that could be dealt with a room that doesn’t face the street. But the view out of the bay window was amazing. A great trade for the traffic noise

Not that it can be changed without a lot of work: Parking Garage Entrance Signage, I looped a few times before I figured out how to enter the parking garage, one perspective is that I need to get better at entering parking garages in San Francisco, for this was my first time.

Parking is on the ground floor below the rooms. There's no way to "secure" parking, just make sure valuables are out of sight. Room is nice, a bit dark but the lighting is nice. Layout was very nice, bed and restroom were clean, room temp. was good, and staff were friendly.

The location is excellent. Close to all the bars and restaurants of the Marina District, close to the Marina itself and close to many bus services. I requested a quiet inner room but ended up with a very noisy one overlooking Lombard Street.
- 0.5/5
The location was in a good area of town with lots of restaurants and bus stops. My family and I experienced a big breech in our privacy. We had an issue with a rental car company that gave out our personal information. The hotel, without knowing what happened, did the same thing to us. The acting hotel manager chose to share our private information about our car to a complete stranger over the phone. When he was confronted about the incident he began screaming at me in the lobby that I was in the wrong. He continued to yell at my husband and I until we finally went up to our room. 20 minutes later the same acting manager called our room to apologize after he realized his mistake. We decided to go back to the front desk to talk to him and try to explain to him our side of things. He did apologize and comped the room but continued to yell at me when I again explained that he had but us in danger by giving a stranger our information over the phone. He said that the car I was driving did not fall under the privacy policy of the hotel. A quick Google search actually showed that there is a California state laws that hotels need to follow for privacy issues which includes cars. We left the hotel after one day as we did not feel safe to stay. With our information out to strangers from the rental company and the hotel we could no longer stay there. I am still blown away by the lack of concern for paying costumers while taking the word from a complete stranger over the phone. This could have been easily taken care of by calling us directly on our phone or the room phone and allowing us the opportunity to talk to the management before being yelled at without being given the opportunity to share our side. I want to warn everyone who may look at staying at this hotel. Please be advised that you may not be safe during your stay. I have received an apology email from the property management which I appreciate as well as the offer to comp our stay.

in the city/location and secure parking. Good price. I was very happy with the secure parking especially as I had read that parking fills up. room was clean but the 2 chairs had old stains. The furniture was from the 80s. The bed spread was old and worn as were the decorative cushions that were on the bed. Are they even needed. I asked for a quieter room after reading in the comments that it can be noisy next to a bar across the street. I got the room across from the bar and had loud music playing until the early hours.
- 4/5
Room on west side of building, fronting Filmore St. Filmore gets noisy on Friday nights. I like really soft pillows. I brought my own this time. None were provided.

location is excellent! tons of excellent restaurants in walking distance. and convenient public transit. free parking is the bomb! be warned...there is a very popular outdoor bar across the street. it can be very loud, very late!
- 3/5
Cute place close to a lot of great restaurants. I would consider staying again for the right price but I'd bring a white noise machine next time. Other then the noise issues the room was on the larger side and I was pleasantly surprised Check in was lukewarm but efficient :) The only problem for us is we stayed here on a Saturday night and the drinking establishment Nextdoor got VERY loud, especially at 2am when all the screaming drunk people were kicked out and feeling good. I had to work the next morning, early, so that was unfortunate.
- 4/5
Great location. Free parking! No option for breakfast.

The room was clean. There were lots of places to eat within walking distance. It was a little noisy being on a busy street.

Short walk to shops and dining, on-site parking a real plus!

Though outdated, there are large rooms, parking on-site, and heaters. They’re cozy. And I’ve stayed on multiple occasions now. Lots to do too in the area.

The parking worked out well given the busy area, but the lady working the front desk during check-in wasn't the friendliest and didn't have a name tag on which surprised me. The check-out aspect with the manager was much nicer and wish I had that service when I first came in.

- 3/5
It was easy to check in and the room was dated but clean and fine. My biggest complaint is that this is not a bargain hotel but they don’t straighten up the room for you. I am fine if for conservation purposes they don’t change sheets or towels when you are only there for a couple of days, but someone should make up the room each day.
- 4/5
Parking secure and A/C was good.
- 5/5
Everything was fantastic. Staff was amazing.
- 5/5
We asked to change to an interior room because the hotel is at the very busy and somewhat noisy intersection of Fillmore and Lombard. Staff was very accomodating and consequently we hardly heard anything. It was easy to get public transport, and the hotel is reasonably priced. The free parking is a huge bonus, saving us $30-70 a day. Many good places to eat in walkable distances. The Marina District is nice and we walked many places at night with no worries about bums or crime. Easy to get to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass from here, either by bus or car.
- 5/5
Very clean room
- 5/5
Felt safe in the neighborhood as a single woman traveler. Walls are thin though, I brought a sound machine and was still woken up throughout the night with room doors slamming shut and a baby crying nearby, plus street sounds.
- 5/5
For the price I would highly recommend this hotel
- 4/5
The Chelsea is in a great location. The free parking is a great perk. The Room was clean and spacious. The Mexican Restaurant across the street is great too!
- 4/5
The Chelsea Inn is a clean, well maintained lodging at an attractive price. The air conditioning unit is quiet. The secure parking is a big plus. Check-in for a prepaid reservation was a bit involved. I wish inns/motels provided soft pillows. Also I wish the coffee maker would dispense just hot water - I prefer tea. I recommend The Home Plate for breakfast - one block away with superior food and service.
- 3/5
Very basic accommodations. Staff was helpful but room was basic - no fridge, micro, no extras (gym, pool, restr, etc.) but access to public transport and neighborhood feel
- 5/5
Very safe parking area. Close to everything. Hotel was very quiet and rooms were good size. Would stay there again.
- 2/5
Not the cleanest bathroom. Extremely loud.
- 5/5
Great property, convenient location, lots of dining options, clean rooms/property and very friendly staff!
- 4/5
The rooms were clean a bit outdated with no fridge. The elevator would close quickly, there were several times I was separated from other members of my party because the doors shut fast before loading or unloading. At night it was noisy until after 2 am due to nearby bars. On the up side the staff was great, and the property is in a great location, walkable for food, shopping, and the marina. I would recommend others to stay at this location.
- 4/5
It's a good option if you have not other choices.
- 4/5
I give it 4 stars for one reason. The hotel is next to the post office. If you have a room in the back, you hear mail trucks being loaded at 3 in the morning. Got a lousy night's sleep. Other than that, the Chelsea is always consistently good in all other categories.
- 5/5
I loved that the place had convenient parking. It was really clean too.
- 5/5
Great property. Nothing fancy but very clean, comfortable, and free parking.
- 4/5
Clean, surprisingly spacious rooms with updated features while still preserving bit of San Francisco's architectural charm. At the corner of Fillmore and Lombard, it's an excellent location for enjoying the Marina district, Presidio, Fort Mason, etc. I expected it to be noisy, given that the Fillmore is quite lively at night, but it wasn't noticeable from our room. Free parking in that area is definitely a bonus. The underground gated garage was clean and well-lit. It was easy to park a compact car, but might be a tight fit for larger vehicles when mostly full.
- 2/5
I liked that the inn was nearby a lot of dining options. It’s really well located near restaurants. For those who are going for the night scene, definitely convenient as there are a few options across the street. Otherwise, everything else wasn’t as expected. First, the staff isn’t friendly nor welcoming. I smiled at them a few times with no smile back. On a couple occasions, I could see the front desk lady staring at us as loaded everyone up, my dad who’s in a wheelchair and infant daughter. I smiled back after the awkward realization we were being watched but received no smile or acknowledgment of my wave. Secondly, the hot water all over the building was out. We didn’t get notified and when called the person on the other phone couldn’t really give us any information other than we called to get it fixed and it should be fixed later. With an added comment along the lines of “you know, these things happen” they didnt even offer a late check out or apology. They also made my friend move her car so someone else could park in the parking spot by the front desk. She was well within her right as she parked there with an suv and the other driver had a pick up, but really!? They didn’t offer her another spot within the building. Lastly, at night, the front desk lady allowed guest to park in the main entrance and I couldn’t get to the handicap parking spot that I needed for my dad. I had to drive around the block and drop him off on the side. I won’t be staying here again.

- The hotel is located in a great area with restaurants, bars and ways to get around the city. We walked everywhere. - The room was spacious, clean, and had an air conditioner - Parking was free & is located in a garage below the hotel - You need key access to enter the parking garage & elevator, which made us feel safe. - There is NO refrigerator but they did have an ice machine on the floor - Staff was nice and had everything ready for us when we arrived.

Rooms and hotel in need of a renovation. Only one chair in the room. Desk did not have a desk chair, missing furniture was unexpected. One small bar of soap was only amenity in bathroom. The in shower pump for shower gel was empty. Hair in the bath tub. Worst thing is our room faced the back alley, which is next door to a post office. All day and night constantly hearing trucks running, unloading, banging, yelling, never stopped for 5 minutes. We didn't get any sleep. Ask for a room away from the alley.
- 5/5
Excellent central location and easy parking. Loved how windows opened to fresh air and how interior rooms were quiet. Old fashioned feel and charm. Katrina’s Taqueria across street served delicious quality nutritious food created with care. Highly recommended.

Highly recommended this hotel and I love the area, feels very safe. And if you are a Harry Potter fan you must go to the bar across the street Wizards and Wands! It’s magical!!

We really enjoyed our 2 nights here. Property is at a great location with on site parking that makes it so convenient. Staff was amazing, provided great information for getting around, dining, etc. I couldn't have picked a better place to stay for the area.
- 4/5
The location for this property is its best aspect! We loved that the hotel had a bus stop right outside, and that there were a lot of restaurants/stores on the same road. We also liked having a parking garage included; that was really important because of our car rental.
- 5/5

Lady at night shift is a little rude.
- 1/5
The bathroom had swarm of ants, I mean dozens of ants. We went to the front desk and showed an employee a video of the ants. He said sorry about that and went about his business. My wife and I literally stood there with our luggage for nearly ten minutes before I asked him what could be done. He said he couldn’t do anything for us since we made the reservation through a third party. I then asked why he didn’t say anything to us and let us stand there for ten minutes without any communication, and he remained quiet. I told him he didn’t even offer us a credit or new room, and his response was “you didn’t ask”. All we did was tell him about a serious ant issue, and he showed no concern. This was extremely poor customer service.
- 3/5
Parking was tight, Room was fine and honestly bathroom was outdated and gross. We stayed less than 12 hours (early flight out) so barely used the full accommodations. Would not stay again.
- 3/5
The property was like a motel with a walk up window to check in at night. Was just OK. Luckily we only needed a place to stay for 1 night before heading out on a cruise.
- 4/5
The nearby blocks felt very safe, even in early evening & offer nice food options. Travel to the financial district was straightforward via bus using a Clipper card. It was by far the best value option for me, with a comfortable bed and decent size room. Overall I was happy with my stay. My room was a bit noisy on a few nights, with busy bars & their music etc. clearly heard through the windows. When I arrived, I had an empty soap wrapper instead of a bar of soap, and sticky mug rings on my bedside table. After nearly 18hrs of travel I couldn't face complaining, so cleaned this up myself and requested new soap, which was promptly and cheerfully delivered. Based on other reviews, those negatives sound like outlier experiences, and I do recommend the Chelsea Inn, especially for a business stay.
- 5/5
It was a perfect stay, clean room, great location for where w were and an awesome stay. Thank you
- 5/5
We stayed 2 nights here and both night were wonderful. It was really quiet and we walked to dinner both nights. There is a bunch of restraunts right around the block. We parked in the garage underneath the hotel and took city transit, the bus stop was right outside the front door almost, will definitely go back.
- 3/5
Room was okay, until I woke up in the morning with ants all over bedside table and even some in the bed, I could easily tell they were ants though, at least they were not bed bugs.

This place is stuck in the 80s ! There's even a phone book in nightstand. The furniture is falling apart. It's just totally stuck in the '80s and if you're on any side the Lombard side or the fillmore side you're going to hear a music and people screaming and drunk people until after 2:00 a.m. They should really warn people about this before you get a room there. We definitely would not ever stay here again. Also the bathroom was dirty old crusty stuff in the tiles.

So freaking noisy!!!!
- 4/5
Average kind of place and decent for the price. Has an 80s building kind of vibe. Excellent proximity to the hot spot areas on Fillmore , Union and Chestnut street corridors.
- 5/5
Great place. Very friendly and helpful staff
- 4/5
The location was wonderful. We could walk or catch a bus to wherever we wanted to go in the SF area. Union and Chestnut shopping and dining streets were both within a couple of blocks with a great selection of dining, bars, and shops - including a good bookstore and old fashion movie theater. We could walk to the Marina area, Presidio or Ft. Mason. We would stay here again.

Everything was kind of out of date and felt a little sub par… I asked the front desk if they have water available and they said no, but they have vending machines, the one on my floor didn’t have any bottled water. They didn’t have a mini fridge or microwave in the rooms. One benefit was the underground locked parking available. It’s fine if you just need a place to sleep and not spend much time!

I liked the location, and parking. I didn't like that it was super noisy on Saturday night. Many night clubs in the area and music was super loud. We could not sleep until club closed after 2:00 a.m.

safe parking

The room smelled musty and it was damp. The carpet felt damp. The comforter was actually wet. All our clothes felt damp after being in the room.
- 4/5
Excellent location. Straightforward check in and out. Building is dated but that’s part of its charm!

Good service 👍 prompt attention

the hotel room was spacious and clean. Parking was easy. The air conditioner was very loud. Also the street noise was extremely loud, especially when the bars let out on Saturday night.

I found the Chelsea Inn fit my needs perfectly. It was what I expected. Wilson at the front desk was super friendly. He and I are both SF native kids so there was an instant bond. Parking is secure in the lot outside the lobby or in the card key operated underground garage. Safe hotel. Rooms & bathrooms are spacious with older Early American style furniture, comfortable beds. Bedding and towel linens were clean. 3rd floor has nice views. Rooms have safe deposit boxes. Always a plus! A mini fridge and microwave would have been a nice touch, often found in these Lombard Street area hotels. You could see in the TV Armoire that space was there to accommodate them at one time. I think maybe some rooms have them? My 3rd floor room faced Fillmore, great views!! Traffic noise was not an issue... but on a Fri or Sat night, there's a super popular nightclub across the street called Jaxson's. It's packed with people pouring out onto the sidewalks, so if outside noise bothers you, the Fillmore street facing rooms on a Fri or Sat night might not be for you. It didn't bother me. The hotel itself is very quiet and convenient and efficient. Good value. I'd stay here agin. Only thing that bothered me... housekeeping piles up dirty linens, garbage and dishes just outside the elevators on the room floors. It's unsanitary and smells. Also unnecessary because housekeeping closets are steps away. Perhaps they need dirty linen bins? Fixable! Exterior halls could be cleaner. I'd stay here again!

Exellent area. Lots of good restaurants nearby. Room was very clean

2nd time staying here. I would stay again but only if guaranteed a room that does not face Lombard. We were disrupted from 2-4am by a motorcycle party across the street at the bar. the first time we stayed our room faced Fillmore and it was still noisy with the bar across that street but not as bad. Will probably not stay there again, unless you are going to party all night.

Good location, free safe parking.

It’s dated needs a remodel in the bathroom. Coventry Inn is much better.

We love to stay here its close to everything and its clean.

It was good we love to stay at the Chelsea Inn when we go to San Francisco for medical appointments. This time we also celebrated my husband’s birthday early with a visit to Baker Beach and then dinner on Fisherman’s Wharf. I love the fact that there is secure parking.

The seize of the room was spacious for SF.

Underground gated parking was much appreciated. Staff were very helpful!

This is a small chain of 5-6 hotels in SF. Great location. Walkable neighborhoods. Easy to park and forget driving while in City.
- 5/5
Excellent hotel in convenient location.
- 5/5
Clean, comfortable, modern room. Ask for upper floor to minimize noise from late-night luggage carts. Parking secure and excellent, and FREE. Now, my preferred location to stay in S.F.

Consistency. Always great.

Good location, clean and functional room

It was a short, one night stay, but the Chelsea Inn was a great stay. The power went out the morning that we left, but those things happen and I have no complaints. Clean rooms, awesome walkable area around the property and great stay!

Very nice man to check us in

Overall, it's good bang for the buck. Old but kept well. Only issue, my shower drain was slow to drain, needed a snake down it. Great location. Just make sure and ask for a room away from busy road that runs in front.
- 5/5
Excellent location for being close to Golden gate park
- 4/5
Happened to stay during Santa Con so it was just CRAZY outside. Super fun though! Did have ants in the bathroom but everything was pretty clean other than that!
- 5/5
Good location, walking distance to GG Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf, free indoor parking, clean, comfortable. The bar next door had some noise late into the night, not the hotel’s fault. Safe location. Mel’s Drive-in down the street had excellent food.
- 3/5
No refrigerator and noisy heater.
- 5/5
Loved the comfort of free gated underground parking garage with stay as well as the security of only having access to garage and elevator to rooms by room key. The bathroom was larger than expected and the room was very cute with the windows. Beds were very comfortable and loaded with pillows. Can add a refrigerator to your room for $5, so highly recommend! The only down side was the noise from the nightlife right next door, but as we were staying for a festival it didn’t disturb our sleep. Will definitely keep this in mind for future stays near Cow Hollow.

Walking is available for excellent dining and shopping

The toilet was out of order. The hotel management ignored my complaints. At checkout, I was refused to get the receipt. The worst hotel I have ever stayed.
- 5/5
I was amazed to find this gem for such a low price. Our room had a fabulous view of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the staff was very helpful and polite. The street design is a little counter-intuitive for Uber drivers to find the place and designate a pickup spot, but that's certainly not the motel's fault. As others have mentioned, the weekend night noise is a bit disruptive, but it's not horrible.
- 4/5
Confident location and inn to stay in. Room was quite clean. Bathroom was clean and well prepped. Could take a bath if you wanted. Outside is pretty noisy and can keep you up if you’re not prepared.

Great location. Little noisy area at night but safe and convenient.

Dated but clean. A little bit more expensive than I liked.

The Chelsea Inn people are very helpful and friendly. The service is excellent. Saturday night was noisy but otherwise a very good stay.
- 3/5
Saturday night there was loud music from a nearby business until 2:30am. The police would not respond to this issue. Could not sleep. Sunday and monday nights no issues.
- 4/5
Good value and location.
- 5/5
Nice area Price reasonable No complains
- 5/5
Lovely hotel with free secure parking. In a safe area with easy walking access to coffee shops and restaurants.
- 5/5
The location is great and it met all of our needs. It’s not the most modern hotel but we prefer to stay there because it’s perfect for us!
- 5/5
Nice place in great neighborhood. Many restaurants in close wlaking distance. Underground locked parking for security. I paln to leave car in garage and UBER around town.
- 4/5
It was good and could have been better if 1) there wasn’t a cot in the room because we did not request it, 2) the safe worked the entire time and not only once and 4) the shower gel and other items in shower weren’t almost empty. I told someone at front desk thinking they would appreciate knowing for the next guests and seemed like they could care less by staying safe probably needed batteries and we should have called for more. No, good service means you take care of those things like refilling shower gel up front.
- 5/5
The place was nice, clean and the employees were all very nice.
- 4/5
Good Clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
Stayed. Here for one Saturday night, but it was nice and quite. Room was clean and it included secure parking.
- 5/5
Very nice people at the front desk always greeting you with a smile
- 4/5
Location is excellent, few short blocks to Fort Mason. Lots of restaurants nearby, no restaurants in the hotel though. Hotel is of the budget variety, with very basic amenities, no car charging, no refrigerator in the rooms. On the plus side, Free self parking, and usable internet. Rooms are spacious but the view is generally not very nice (garbage on the ground in the alleyway, for example).
- 3/5
Back side room quiet. Everything just OK, nothing special.
- 4/5
Bathroom wasn’t too clean in the shower wall.
