When I got to the hotel, it actually said it was CLOSED and I had to complete check in at a hotel down the street (despite already having a bunch of luggage to carry around). Was very strange. Breakfast was also at the other hotel (although it was actually very good). Elevator is a super old vintage one with two doors and there is also a cat in residence (I do like cats, but would've liked to know in advance since my dog went a bit crazy). The photos on the walls are also old and it gave me a bit of a Haunted Mansion vibe. Luckily no ghosts.

Skittles the cat is friendly. The owners have preserved the original victorian charm of the place. Classic San Francisco. The windows open for some fresh sea air. big old clawfoot tub and shower. Be sure and observe the dog, cat, bird and mouse in the wonderful antique elevator. And take the stairs at least once to see all the great old photos. Close to some good restaurants (Bouche and Roxanne's for instance). Two steep blocks uphill to The Masonic. Parking right across the street. We have stayed previously at the Fairmont and Mark Hopkins and we now prefer this place. Real old San Francisco feel. Nothing not to like.

The Golden Gate Hotel is a cozy little place in a great location. We live in a Victorian house, so this felt just like home. The elevator is too cool and we enjoyed all the vintage pictures. The rooms were very clean and the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. We would love to visit again someday. Decaf options would have been nice.

I know there is a cat in the hotel but the smell of cat urine is quite strong. The room was clean, although TV and some plus sockets were not working. Bed and shower were very good. I preferred staying at the Cornell Hotel 2 minutes down the road!

Loved the location. Right next to the Masonic. We arrived during a storm and the lobby was locked. We had to walk to another hotel to check in. We had a toddler with us so it was a bit stressful. Our lights also kept turning on in the middle of the night. It also sounded like someone was outside our fire escape one night.

Cute little hotel right in the city. Old style elevator and fire escapes and everything wonderful. I got in late, but check-in was easy, just a few steps down the street to another hotel where I received my key. This place is so well decorated and full of charm! Great place for me and my dog.

Golden Gate front desk has limited hrs (closes @ 5). After hrs, the sister hotel, The Cornell front desk should be picking up phone calls; this failed me twice. And when I went to bkft the last day of my stay, there was no one @ that desk to buzz me in so I left to a nearby cafe. Otherwise it's a nice establishment with charming ambiance in a convenient location for my needs. As nice as the staff are, it needs work.

The location was amazing. The decor was historic and lovely. It felt like we were back in time with all the modern benefits. The neighborhood was fun to walk around in. Breakfast was not the best. The eggs lacked flavor and the ham was cold. There weren't many items. There also wasn't any fruit.

I'm severely allergic to cats and there is an adorable hotel cat, but he ran into my room one morning. The staff was quick to help me get him out since I can't touch cats. The window in my room was street view facing and they don't have blackout curtains. The room was lit up all night with the decorative curtains which made it harder to sleep. I wanted to love this place, but won't stay here again. It's just a little run down, but one thing it does have going for it, is the incredible staff. Everyone was so welcoming, helpful, and kind.

One of the highlights is the free breakfast. Actually hot food. Having a good meal to start the day, in a very expensive city is such a great option. The location is really good because of easy access to transportation. There's good food markets right next to it, affordable eating places, and a Trader Joe's a few blocks away. I could see why I ran into people who told me they go back every trip to San Francisco. I definitely recommend them and will stay there again.

Golden Gate Hotel was older but nice blankets and sheets with a ceiling fan in the room. Bathroom had an old fashion flush toilet and clawfoot tub which added to the old style but was very clean with marble countertop. We arrived Sunday night to free parking on the street and paid $16 for street parking by meter starting at 7am Monday morning until checkout 11am. Across the street you can pay parking for $40 but if you entered before 9:30am and left by 7:30am there was a $16 Early Bird special. Very central location 1 block from Union Square and 2 blocks from Chinatown and we walked 25 mins to Lombard St and then another 5 mins to Fisherman's Wharf. Good free breakfast few doors down in a French hotel with Joan of Arc decorations. My son liked the cat!

The Golden Gate Hotel boasts a prime location, allowing guests to easily walk to prominent attractions like Macy's, which houses The Cheesecake Factory on its 8th floor, and the Backstage store, famous Chinatown and the hotel situated within a 10 - minute walking radius. This proximity provides ample opportunity to explore the surrounding area. Furthermore, the hotel's close proximity to ZA Pizza, accessible by cable car, adds to its convenience. Although the food served at the sister hotel was acceptable and satisfying The hotel's physical condition falls short of its online representation, appearing somewhat worn and in need of maintenance. Our accommodations were plagued by unpleasant odors, and the shared bathroom facilities proved inconvenient given the occupancy numbers. I experienced personal discomfort and developed skin irritation. There is no is A/C or heater but for February visit its hot in the room an they have electric fan. There’s a telephone that doesnt work too. With the hotel’s pricing, I had anticipated a more comfortable stay; nonetheless, the location seemed to justify the cost. Honestly, I chose to book the hotel primarily due to its location and the nostalgic appeal it holds for living like a local. Ultimately, the hotel's overall experience failed to meet my expectations. In the picture shown is the stairs we climbed up and down every day so they could’ve really clean it a bit.

Staff unavailable when we checked in at 3pm, so couldn't pay the deposit; had to change plans the next day to accommodate their limited hours. Often worried if there would be enough toilet paper for the single toilet on the floor (had gotten to less than one roll; no spares). Only decaf coffee available in the only morning we tried to make coffee.

Fantastic stay at Golden Gate Hotel. Since I checked in later (around 8pm-9pm if I remember correctly), I had to pick up the keys from another location down the street, about a 1 minute walk. The place itself felt like a movie, it's an older building but elegant. The room was comfortable, clean, good closet space, solid wifi, just what I needed for one night. My work location was only a 10 minute walk. There's a convenience store across the street, couple bars if that's your thing (I don't drink), safe area. I found free 2 hour street parking a half block away, metering started at 8am. My morning work thing was taking longer so I requested and obtained a later check in - much appreciated! I saw front desk staff in the morning, she was friendly. Great price considering the location. I'd stay here again. Would've preferred for the bathroom to be in the room, it's in the hallway. Not a big deal, there was only one instance where I had to wait for someone else to finish using it.

The Golden Gate Hotel has terrific, old-school but well-maintained ambience. The location is great (just 5min from Chinatown, 10min from Union), and the price-point is too. For travelers that want to get away from the cold, modern hotel feel, this is the perfect place. Breakfast is served two doors down, with GGH hosting afternoon tea — both are great options for kicking off your day. Staff is warm and helpful, and of course who can forget the resident cat, who will warm up to you after a night or two. If you arrive after hours, you’ll want to stop by the Cornell (their partner hotel) first. This could have been better communicated.

The Victorian look was very charming and as advertised. Our room fit the requested 3 persons and was clean, but I was surprised it did not have its own bathroom. Your employees very professional and helpful. It was not advertised that it would be a community bathroom. Our room was located in the basement so the pipes would make a banging noise when in use. We had the fortunate incident of being locked out because the lock was broken, short inconvenience before a locksmith was called to fix.

Heater was old and out of fear of burning the property down we had to keep the curtains open. The TV was inoperable. There was no staff when we arrived we had to go to another property to get keys. No parking and public parking was $60.

The room was clean and decorated adorably. However there’s an old style gas heater near the window that you do not want anything near so in order to stay warm we had to keep the curtain half open and the window faced other windows that are very close. Also the TV was impossible to watch or connect to. Also with no parking and having to pay $60 in public parking makes this property one of never stay at again. We ended up checking out at 8am.

I loved the character of the hotel and was generally pleased the stay. I really wanted to like it more, but it was odd that reception was only manned from 9-5 and the cat had to do the job outside those hours, nice though it was. We had to use the French-styled sister hotel down the road to check in, and the second time when we returned for a Wifi code, we were asked for ID when we had already shown it an hour before. Also, the breakfast was at the sister hotel and, with the best will in the world, it wasn't very good. Also, the hotel would have been fine without a TV as it doesn't really fit with the old world style, but in the event, it had one that only received one channel, and that had no sound. We could have told reception but the cat didn't seem to care.

Location is great but the positive just about. ends there, well, the lobby is also nice enough. The rooms are barely big enough for the bed. The breakfast in 'bed and breakfast' is in another hotel, and was lacking. The sharing of a bathroom is a hidden when purchasing. And that's a big issue when others are leaving a messy bathroom—one neighbor had peed on the floor without cleaning up. If you can get a bathroom in your room—check carefully—then it would be been an 'ok' place to stay. At the convention prices paid of over $250++ a night, we won't be back.

I do wish I had known that breakfast was actually at the sister hotel a few doors down, so you can't just pop downstairs. Also, the king beds are two twins, but given the tight staircase it makes sense. It was easy to get around the city from here and was the perfect homebase.

Quiet, comfy beds, very well-maintained/clean. The breakfast is pretty basic, but it's complimentary. Had a few issues with charges, mostly revolving around their inability to explain some of them, as well as one random extra charge. Heads up, they do charge a nightly amenities fee plus a nightly pet fee. So, if traveling with pets, expect to pay an extra $45/nite. Ultimately, it was this charge that prevented me from extending my stay. Lost track of time on my last day and was an hour late checking out. Front desk guy gave me a harder time than I think he should have. I had been there for 10 days and thought that should have earned me to a little leeway but it was Saturday and they needed to flip the room. So I kind of understand the reason for the harshness, but I I could have used some help with my bags and I just kind of felt like they were kicking me out after showing out about 1300 bucks.

Loved the Golden Gate Hotel! You can access pretty much everything in San Francisco from this location, by taking public transportation. This was our homebase for five nights. The only reason for taking one star off was the included breakfast at their sister hotel down the street. The breakfast was very limited and ran out of some items by 8:30 AM which they would not replenish. We only ended up using the breakfast two out of our five mornings, and the included breakfast was one reason I chose this hotel over another. Disappointed in the breakfast, but the hotel itself and staff get five stars!

This was our second time staying at the Golden Gate and we absolutely loved it. The hotel is filled with lovely classic fixtures and very friendly staff (including Skittles the resident cat). The rooms are comfortable, clean and nicely decorated. The location is great and close to some fantastic restaurants. Would definitely stay again the next time we’re in SF!

Pros: The hotel is in a good location if you are willing to walk a bit, and public transport is easily accessible. The area is safe at night. Everything was clean (room, shower, washrooms, etc.), and toiletries were available too. Bed was also quite comfy! Free breakfast was provided every day (a <1 min walk down the street at their sister hotel), and it was quite yummy (basic continental breakfast but it was a good one). They also provide some complimentary cookies and tea/coffee in the afternoon! And the cat. The cat is great (unless you’re allergic to cats, not so great). Cons: Room is small (though this isn’t technically a con because you can see that the room is small when you book it). But, you’re not spending much time in the room anyways, so no big deal at all. There was no AC, and we weren’t able to turn off the heater in the room. However, the nice lady at the front desk immediately brought us up a portable AC unit! So if you’re worried about no AC and the room getting hot, the amazing staff will happily help you with that. Overall, I recommend staying here if you don’t mind longer walks to other areas of the city, and want a more affordable option that is still clean, safe, and comfortable.

Great spot to stay. Close to the Museum of Modern Arts, you can walk to the fisherman's wharf, there's plenty of public transportation options around. The hotel was good, free breakfast is in another property but it's less than a three minute walk. Overall, extremely satisfied with the experience!

The hotel is cute and quaint. Check in was easy. There was a strong smell of cleaning chemicals when we entered our room We tried to shower before dinner but there was no hot water. The walls are paper thin and our neighbors woke us up having a conversation at 2 in the morning. The next morning we tried to shower and again no hot water. Also, the outlets sparked when we tried to plug in our phone charger. The place was cute but we’d probably stay somewhere else next time. We were happy that it was so close to the Masonic so that was a bonus for us.

In the room I was disappointed that there were no screens on the windows. So if you open any of the windows it is completely open for anything to get in. That is weird to me. And there was no hand soap. We were only staying two nights so we just used the shower gel. And the breakfast is a couple hotels down. It was ok I was just surprised it wasn’t there. Other than this it was ok.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone but especially if you have an eye for unique hotels and if you have pets. To my first point, the hotel is adorned with so many beautiful vintage paintings and furniture. There’s even an antique elevator which was such a joy! Plus, they provided some supplies for my cat which took off a lot of initial stress. Loved staying here!

This is a very cute, quaint, historic facility with a lot of charm and great staff. It has its compromises—the floors squeak, the room had a window but no AC, and I am sure I missed a disclosure but it turns out I booked a room with a shared toilet and shower down the hall. For the price, it was great, and for the age and design of the building, the owners have done a great job keeping it up. Everything was clean and well-cared-for in its old world way.

While a quaint place to stay, it could use some updates. We had very little water pressure in our tub. We had no cold water in our sink and the hot tap leaked. The TV also wouldn't work. We paid extra to have a private bathroom, and i dont think it was worth it. We loved the staff and the breakfast at the neighboring hotel. We also enjoyed Skittles! She is a sweetie. The cookies in the afternoon were also great.

Our stay at golden gate was ok. We had a room with a shared bathroom and the room was also ok. The ventilation was terrible and left a weird smell in our room. There was some hairs in the showers when we arrived, and the shared bathroom was dirty. The breakfast was not great; the food tasted almost nothing, they ran out of bread, they had no glasses for juice or water, only cardboard cups. It all tasted like it was bought as the cheapest option at Costco and heated. The bed was super comfy!

Very convenient and accessible location. Room was downstairs basement, no AC or fans, window had no screen. If you keep window open all night you might be kept up by busy EMS sirens. Staff provided a fan upon request from their storage area. Communal restroom was generally clean and well maintained. Room did not have a fridge or microwave. Coffee available upstairs.
