Reviews
The Handlery Union Square Hotel is a well-located hotel in San Francisco, with friendly and helpful staff. The hotel is older and some rooms are in need of updating, but it is generally clean and comfortable. Some guests have reported issues with air conditioning, water pressure, and noise. The hotel's location is convenient for shopping, dining, and transportation, but some guests have expressed concerns about safety in the surrounding area.
- Great location
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Some rooms are in need of updating
- Issues with air conditioning, water pressure, and noise
- 4/5
Hotel is centrally located with plenty of food and activities options around. Rooms are specious and well maintained. We did see some garbage left between the bed and nightstand, so it was probably not cleaned very well. Coffee and water in the room was much appreciated. Outdoor pool looked lovely although we didn’t get a chance to use it. The staff was very helpful and friendly.
- 5/5
Great location, lovely, vintage rooms, helpful staff
- 1/5
Our bathroom wasn’t clean, the pool was very small and miss leading, and our ac was messing up middle of the night me and my boyfriend were burning up. And for one night $239? And a $50 deposit which wasn’t stated ever… and $67 for a day of parking is wild to me. I don’t recommend .. and we got a queen suite looked small
- 4/5
It is a basic hotel with helpful staff.
- 3/5
Good location and great staff. Room could have been cleaner--terrible smell in the closet ("pet friendly" consequence?).
- 5/5
Staff ….Very Friendly and had a warm welcome. Location was a plus. Rooms were great for the price and felt safe with surroundings. Will be staying again.
- 4/5
Union square.. lots of nearby things to do. You can pick up thr hop on hop off buss..5 minute walk. The cable car stop at the same location..it was a very maintained hotel. However no restaurant or bar or food of any kind. I would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to anyone.
- 4/5
Good hotel in good location.
- 5/5
- 5/5
Clean and amazing staff!
- 5/5
This is the best hotel in SF. CLASSIC - thick solid walls, staircases, casement windows yet all the modern conveniences - wifi, smart tv, mini-fridge, etc. Family-owned since 1920’s and you can tell it’s lovingly-maintained. Friendly, efficient staff and enough of them! “Old-fashioned” service like bellpersons to fetch bags. Prime location 600 ft from Union Square and 250 feet from theatres. Easy valet parking and access to O’Farrell St without walking around the block. (I recommend Cafe Mason, around the corner, for breakfast or lunch). And it has an outdoor swimming pool!! Booking through Expedia, we not only got a much lower price, we got to-go breakfast boxes AND 20% off parking. The Handlery is my go-to spot for fun in SF!
- 5/5
Friendly professional staff. Will definitely stay there on my next visit
- 5/5
Awesome property at the heart of the city with tons of shops and restaurants around.
- 5/5
This hotel was perfect for us. It was in great proximity to everything we needed. Super close to Union Square. The cable car is right there. And BART etc. It is an old building but well kept. Clean. Nice friendly staff.
- 4/5
The place is nice enough. The lobby and the rooms look great. The hallways on the floors feel a little dark and dated, but they were clean. Staff is friendly. I had someone at the front desk give me some good advice on how to ride the cable cars and get close to Alcatraz. The hotel is ideally situated if you plan to ride the cable car by the way. Just go to the edge of the block and walk a couple blocks down Powell St to the main station there. The parking valet staff is friendly and efficient too. They do charge $65 a day to park, which may be reasonable in SF but seems high to someone from the East coast. The gym could use some investment. It's a few treadmills and some handweights, not much else. The pool looked nice, but it is wedged in between the two sides of the hotel and must be shaded nearly 100% of the time. I would stay here again though. It was a solid value.
- 5/5
Stayed on the premier side of the building. Room was nice and spacious. Very convenient location a 2 minute walk to the BART and there's plenty of food options close by as well as shopping. The only issue is that the pool looked bigger in the pictures haha. I'd do it again for sure!
- 3/5
Rooms were to small. Hallways are too dim. There were dirty towels and bedsheets left outside of tbe hallway in front of the room next to mine and was never cleared by Housekeeping.
- 3/5
Great location to tourist attractions. The room itself was blah. It is an older hotel that’s been renovated by slapping an extra coat of paint on everything. Our room was in a very dark ominous hallway. It smelled musty and like stale cigarettes. Someone was always smoking pot and the smell lingered. The beds are super uncomfortable. Might as well sleep in the ground. Bring your own pillows unless you want to sleep on lumpy squares.
- 4/5
Nice pool area. Friendly staff.
- 5/5
The property was very beautiful! The staff were helpful and friendly. My sisters and I really loved our time there
- 5/5
Location is very desirable. Our room was in the original tower but very functional and clean. All staff was very friendly and helpful. We used the valet parking and felt the car was safe and secure during our stay. We would stay again.
- 5/5
Room was very clean
- 5/5
The room is clean beds comfy. It is an older hotel but very good. I would stay here again.
- 5/5
Great location by Union Square and very nice rooms and hospitality
- 4/5
Loved the balcony and clean rooms
- 5/5
Great location in downtown SF. Footsteps away from many shops and restaurants. The staff was great and the beds were comfortable.
- 5/5
I have been staying here for years and over all been very happy but on this visit the cable was out on my particular room and no one to fix it at that time of night so they did take my resort fee off as compensation so over all very happy as usual.
- 5/5
Dated property but very clean and perfect location. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
All good. Wonderful location.
- 4/5
Check in was quick and easy. Rooms were clean but bathrooms need some work maintenance wise. Fridge was useful and bed linens were clean. They held our baggage after check out without any issue.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, classy with great rooms and amenities.
- 2/5
Means you park in front of hotel and they take your vehicle . You have to park around the corner and the lady gave the worst instructions and I couldn’t find the parking garage. there’s hardly any room in the bathroom as wel
- 2/5
It’s loud. Extremely loud. Not just outside but also inside. After hearing the noise from upstairs I decided to try and tip toe around my room since the floors creak. Also the outside noise…4am wake up call from pressure washing sidewalks and cars blasting music and honking. The windows would vibrate from the wind and shake. The temp control fell off the wall the first time I pressed a button. There’s a line between historical and needs maintenance… Also during peak shower hours expect cold water. If you are looking for a cheap place and don’t care about amenities, noise, and functionality, this might make sense. Try getting deals at other hotels nearby.
- 5/5
Had a great few days here! It was easy for us to get around from this location, plus lots of food/shops near by if needed. We didn’t really get to use the pool but we used the sauna and that was nice! The hot/cold water readily available was great as well. One note, it was really dark in the hallways for some reason?! Not a huge thing, but was just odd!
- 5/5
I had a great stay, and a friendly staff. I’ll be back again.
- 4/5
But smell weird all the time
- 5/5
It was great!
- 5/5
Location downtown is convenient to all transport. And just a short walk to the Embarcadero
- 3/5
This was a decent place to stay. The staff was wonderful. The hotel is aged and just ok. It is a few blocks from a pretty bad neighborhood and also very close to the cable car line. Pool looks nice but weather wasn’t agreeable to try it out. Close to lots of food options.

- 3/5
The staff were great every single one of them! However the property is very old, squeaky floors, low dimmed lighting. The AC (thermostat) is extremely old and not the most efficient. The shower pressure was very weak. Room was clean and comfortable however, not much views even from the 7th floor. The pool area is in a courtyard so very shady until 11am-1pm. It is a heated pool however. Location was amazing and extremely convenient. Overall 3.5/5.
- 4/5
Good location. Expensive parking. Don’t use. Small bathroom and room, but they were clean. Old TV, coffee maker and carpet. The hotel is not bad, but definitely needs a refresh in the rooms and hallways.
- 5/5
like the old section
- 4/5
It would have been nice to be told ahead of time not to go to the parking garage before checking in. We had to take our suitcase down 2 sets of stairs to get to the lobby, then back up those stairs to get to the elevator to get to our room. The bed was very firm. Not my favorite, but it was okay. The AC smelled musty and by the morning, my husband was sneezing and congested.
- 5/5
The staff was awesome. Check in was a breeze and the room was immaculate. The front help desk folks were knowledgeable and eager to help us find the right places to go.
- 4/5
Furniture somewhat old Good location
- 4/5
Location, amenities were oaky ,bed was comfortable Room was clean except one day the housekeeper was reluctant to change my beddings, and that was 3 days after check in. ABSURD. Nothing
- 4.5/5
Location was A+. Night recepionist was very friendly and helpful, so was the one when we checked out. The Bail peson one particular was not courteous. Felt a bit racist as he was talking nicely to another group but when it was our turn he was very rude.
- 5/5
Clean room, great, helpful, friendly staff.
- 5/5
Nearby Union Square and Macy’s.
- 5/5
It is an older property but is clean and well maintained. The staff was very helpful in holding our large amount of luggage.
- 4/5
Hotel is dated but fair price
- 5/5
Great location very near to seven eleven Starbucks Burger King main area good location

- 4/5
The $67 daily parking fee is outrageous. Parking should be included with the stay, or at least at a much lower price for staying at the hotel.
- 5/5
Nice staff and everything was close enough to do stuff
- 3/5
Hotel design was nice, but the room and bathroom felt small.
- 5/5
Great location very welcoming staff. Great to have access to theo pool Loved the entire experience
- 5/5
helpful staff, easy to check in, rooms were clean
- 5/5
Great location! Heater outdoor pool and air conditioning. Love this place!!
- 3/5
It was just ok for me. Location is great
- 4/5
Really spacious room which was ideal for a longer stay. There was an office space downstairs for taking calls and working. Staff were all super helpful.
- 5/5
The only thing missing - update the TV experience by having an on screen programming guide. Also allow to Chromecast your your own entertainment.
- 5/5
Great location, in the heart of Union Square. A lot shopping and restaurants around. Safe and walkable. Great pool. Helpful staff.
- 5/5
Its excellent.
- 3/5
Room smelled of old man and moth balls. Was clean but the smell was overwhelming. Room was very small. No fridge.
- 3/5
The hotel itself is well located in within walking distance, the Bart station and Union Square. They’re good restaurants in the area, classic San Francisco restaurants, that are always great to dine in. The parking facilities are excellent! They are Easy to find an easy to exit to get back on the freeway and go home. The rates are reasonable, which is nice that they don’t price gouge you. The front desk staff are pleasant, however, we ended up with someone who was in training so he wasn’t particularly efficient. But that’s OK, everybody has to start somewhere and I’m sure he will catch on and be great. We have another stay scheduled soon, so I’ll update my review. I’ve been staying at this hotel for over 20 years because if it’s ambience and Location. However, in my recent stays , I noted that it’s getting tired looking. It was such a great property when they had the adjacent restaurant. The downtown San Francisco post Covid has really lost a lot of its charm and luster,as has this hotel. I don’t know if it would’ve been better room if we had booked directly with the hotel and we would’ve been given a better room rather than reserving our room on Booking.com. It seemed like the hotel was pretty empty and yet our room was marginal and overlooked the light shaft. Rooms are in the street or the pool are much more charming.
- 5/5
Clean. Friendly staff. No fridge.
- 5/5
This is a lovely hotel and I will definitely stay here again. Staff is very courteous and helpful. My only issue was that I have a disability that keeps my from using stairs and our room was only accessible by going up stairs or using a weird freight elevator which was constantly not working. I also wish I had been told I could access more areas by going out through the garage. Other than that, the room and staff were lovely, I highly recommend.
- 5/5
The staff was courteous and professional. Excellent location to things. Loved the ice machine with the filtered water. This was my second time staying there and I highly recommend it.
- 5/5
Great location nice to have swimming pool
- 4/5
Good location Clean rooms Parking was exorbitantly priced Ventilation was not adequate
- 5/5
I liked how clean the room was, how quiet it was at night. I recommend this hotel.
- 3.5/5
Location was good, most of the staff was good The lady at concierge was very snooty and condescending
- 2/5
The staff was great. The rooms were clean water pressure was great. Loved the balcony and that it was near a cable car stop the facility itself is rather run down with very dark hallways. Yhe Tv were putdated. And why only give 3 peoples with a king size bed. At least put an extra one in a closet. . I thought the area was terrible for visitors. Not alot to do and limited food choices. The area did not seem very safe and was dirty. I would stay at fisherman's warf next time. Not impress with Union Sqaure.
- 5/5
We were celebrating my wife 60th birthday and the hotel went out of their way to upgrade our room at no extra cost. So we had a room on the level next to the pool.
- 5/5
Clean cozy all Needs met
- 4/5
Good location. Near Powell street bart Old but not dirty
- 4/5
Had an appointment in SF. Had good stay and customer service was good!
- 4/5
There was dirt on tables. There was no microwave in the room. House cleaning staff was very disruptive and used to come knock at the door every morning yelling despite do not disturb hanging outside our door. Overall 7/10 experience! location is very ideal in downtown. Union Square is on one minute walk.
- 4/5
Nice building and staff need a bit of a refresh on the building though
- 3.5/5
I like the location and how friendly some of the staff were. But I didn’t like that I was given a room where the light above the sink wasn’t working and it didn’t get fixed despite me telling the Front Desk 3 times about it, starting on day one. I booked a queen bed, but I was assigned a room with double twin beds. I was told that room was bigger, but there was no space to open my suitcase. Apparently hotel rooms in San Francisco tend to be smaller than average. But my biggest disappointment was that the light above my sink wasn’t working and it didn’t get fixed although I made the request on day one. Also, the body/hair wash container in the shower was empty and they didn’t fill it out despite me requesting it on day one as well.
- 4.5/5
Room was good size and comfortable. Great location on Union Square. Staff was very helpful.
- 4.5/5
Comfortable bed, body wash in the shower, very clean Would have preferred a room with city view, but that was all on availability. better TV with more options would be nice
- 5/5
.
- 5/5
Nice spot
- 4.5/5
Very clean, large rooms, friendly staff. Central location. Very good value. No coffee provided in lobby is really unfortunate. Older rooms (but clean).
- 3.5/5
To re evaluate the prices compare to the services The prices and room is small
- 5/5
I didn’t know they had a breakfast Water pressure in the shower
- 5/5
Great for travel needs
- 5/5
Everything was great
- 5/5
It was safe, well priced for its location and clean. I would have loved to have a microwave but all other amenities were good.
- 3/5
PRO: Price was affordable, Staff was friendly, Location was perfect, Outside facilities and needs readily available. CONS: No on site breakfast, Breakfast box was represented as breakfast and was only a glorified fruit box NEGATIVE, A/C was broken upon arrival. A fan was provided and the weather permitted us to keep our room but definately a NEGATIVE, Depending on the direction of travel area was less than desirable, Our room was OK but the carpet was dirty, stained, and the walls were covered with poorly layed wallpaper pealing in areas. Our room was in what appeared to be an old outside hotel added to the facility due to sliding doors to walkway. No useful evevator from the 1st to the 2nd building- Had to go up approx. 20 steps, Parking was quoted at an outragious price so we cancelled our rental. Overall: If you are looking for a lower budgeted hotel and area then this hotel is OK. Personnally we will NOT return due to the accomodations.
- 4/5
This hotel is old and needs to be modernized. That said, it was clean, quiet, and well kept up. The concierge desk was extremely helpful. The location was also a big bonus: Union Square is a really nice area!
- 5/5
Clean and quiet
- 4/5
It was ok, it’s older. The rooms are ere decent and it was clean. No complaints
- 5/5
Staff was so kind and helping, we felt so welcomed. Room was great size and we even got upgraded for free! Great central location as well
- 3/5
Ac didn't work in our room and when we showered we realized the shampoo & conditioner were completely empty and had to call the front desk to refill them. Also didn't read that you have to pay for the valet parking which was almost half of what the room cost.
- 5/5
Everything was wonderful. Quiet comfortable, staff was friendly and extremely helpful. A covered garage in downtown San Francisco to park my car. I would definitely stay again.
- 3/5
Good for the price
- 5/5
Clean room, nice staff.
- 5/5
Room was spotless, bed was comfy, shower got hot quickly, staff was helpful and the location in union square was perfect. Charming historic building with modern amenities.
- 4/5
A/C was not working during my stay.
- 4/5
Stayed in the older part of the hotel. What I liked best was that the windows open, so you can cool the room down and have fresh air at night. The room was a decent size. Mini fridge in the room and a water bottle filling station down the hall. The front desk staff were not the most welcoming, but the bell captains were very friendly.
- 4/5
A good quality well ran hotel, right I. The central part of town for good food and sightseeing opportunities.
- 5/5
We really enjoyed the stay here! The staff were super friendly and helpful. The retro vibe was fun, beds comfy and the sauna was a wonderful bonus! Lots of restaurants they partner with and the location is excellent. Easy walk from the BART and very close to the action. Would definitely stay here again as a home base for exploring the city!
- 5/5
Best staff
- 4/5
The staff is amazing and it is clean, location excellent. The building itself looks old, or at least the part I was staying. But it was a really good experience
- 3/5
Clean room, neighborhood ok
- 5/5
Our stay way great and in the perfect location. Parking was quite pricy but worked out since we did not drive our car during the entire stay.
- 4/5
The best thing about this hotel was its excellent location. It was steps away from Union Square and walking distance to many stores, restaurants, the cable cars and other SF attractions. The hotel of course is quite dated, being a historic building, and does not have a restaurant on site.
- 4/5
The workout room and pool were great features. The pool area was nice to hang out in at the end of the day.
- 5/5
Really spacious and great location!
- 3/5
The hotel was lovely and clean. The housekeeping staff was very polite - we were only there two days so we didn’t require any service. What I found to be consistently lacking was any warmth or welcoming manner from the front desk staff (evening weekend) and the person who, I’m guessing, is supposed to welcome guests at the front door Saturday during the day. We definitely felt as if we were a bit of a burden. Otherwise, the premises were very nice!
- 4/5
Everything was great
- 3/5
Overall, i would not select this hotel again.
- 5/5
Clean, great location, staff very friendly.
- 5/5
We would definitely stay here again for both business and pleasure.
- 4/5
The rooms were clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Especially the front desk and valet
- 4/5
Great location older hotel but well kept but the bathroom was beyond small!!!
- 5/5
Customer service is excellent! Will surely book again
- 5/5
Despite San Francisco downtown is not what it used to be, the hotel is kept in excellent condition.
- 4/5
Great staff. Really handy location. Great value for the money.
- 5/5
The location is a half a block from Union Square so very convenient and safe area
- 5/5
Loved this little hotel.. the room was huge and was old with a modern feel. Loved it!! Location is perfect. Would stay there again if travelling and needed to be in the city.
- 5/5
good
- 5/5
Will recommend
- 5/5
Great Experience
- 5/5
Valet parking was quick and easy. Staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
Great location, loved the suite with our kiddos.
- 4/5
Only one elevator was working and that just wasn't enough for the amount of guests. Our room was okay; nothing fancy but comfortable. We couldn't get the a/c or heat to move off 68 degrees. The shower was tiny and not easy to use.
- 4/5
The hotel location is perfect, close to everything in Union Square. However the guest overnight parking is $67 which is outrageous. I don’t care how expensive the city is. They should at least give a discount to the guest.
- 1/5
I booked a room before there it was nice. This time they gave me a room in a building call Historic. Basically it was old and falling apart. The door knob came off. The shower head was hanging and the elevator was small and broken. The worst was when I was checking out to get to the garage to get the car, it takes awhile to get there. The valet said I needed to go back to the front desk to get my ticket stamped. I have a disability and to go back amd forth was excruciating. While I finally got to the front to check out, others hotel guests were complaining about the same things and the staff seem to be used to this type of things. I will never stay there again.
- 5/5
Very clean . Great staff
- 2/5
One elevator was out the entire time I was there, so it created a pile up at the other elevator, and even though staff knew that, it took them 12 hours to put a sign up.
- 3/5
The walls are so thin that you can hear the conversation of the occupants next door. The floors were very creeky.
- 2/5
AC was broken. Staff lied about this. Thankfully we were taken care of after the fact but not well enough
- 5/5
i think our street view it was just perfect clean room
- 3/5
Worth the money
- 3/5
You only get 2 small water bottles on the 1st day. Walls were not soundproofed well. Property was outdated like most of the properties around the area but well managed. Public transportations were 5-10 minutes walking distance. There were a lots of restaurants around. Area was not bad. We did not feel unsafe. Staff was nice. We did not use the swimming pool or parking. Good for a short stay.
- 5/5
“Great stay overall—comfortable hotel and friendly staff. Special shoutout to Manuel at the front desk for going above and beyond with his kindness and exceptional service. He made our stay even more enjoyable. Thank you, Manuel! Also appreciate Sheily (I am not sure if this is rhe correct spelling of her name, sorry) for being welcoming and helpful.”
- 3/5
Hotel room needed updating and there was an odd cleaning-product smell that never dissipated
- 4/5
This is an older property that has been refurbished. The rooms are clean. Bed needs replacing. It is very convenient to everything. Nice staff.

Absolutely love this hotel! It was my 3rd visit and the only place I’ll stay when visiting SF. Feels very safe which is always my number one concern. Everything is clean and staff is excellent. It is at the perfect location, walking distance to tons of bars, restaurants and stores. Can’t wait to be back. Thanks for the terrific hospitality !
- 3/5
BED SHEET HAD STAINS
- 5/5
Nice hotel
- 5/5
Love this hotel. It's my second time coming here and it will be my go to hotel for San Francisco.
- 5/5
I like this place
- 5/5
Great location
- 5/5
Nice hotel and staff. The concierge, Judi Basolo, was super nice and especially helpful.
- 4/5
It’s an older hotel but the room was big and comfortable. No problems at all. Staff were friendly and the front desk always said “welcome back” or “welcome home”. The only drawback to this property was the lack of an onsite restaurant or some type of coffee service in the AM. We were up early for a conference and the fact that we needed to go around the corner every morning was kind of a drag. They have an old restaurant on site but it is not functioning. They let me back in there to use the microwave one night. I would stay here again because it was reasonably priced and again comfortable with very friendly staff. If they can manage that restaurant in that space again it will be a great value for the money in that city.
- 1/5
Their room that they give us smells and extinct parking lot is too expensive. They never tell you that before you book in so be careful if you have a truck you’re paying $80 not a good experience to say I recommend.
- 2/5
Old property with a small staticky tv with no Netflix. Thermostat is from the 1800’s. Lol. Plumbing is sluggish. Just an overall unpleasant property to visit. Location is great and staff is nice but that’s it
- 3/5
The parking a little too expensive. The pool was okay. The hall carpet inside the hotel needs to be replace or wash!
- 5/5
Convenient, clean, quiet.
- 3/5
Parking is $70+ a day at the hotel. It was easier to park slightly down and across the street for a max of about $45 a day. There was no microwave in the room to warm food that had gotten cold but the security at the front door whose name I believe is Darold was great and took us to warm it in the connected restaurant. It served its purpose.
- 5/5
Very good service. The staffs are amazing.
- 3/5
The room was dated. The carpets were stained, so was the bathroom door frame. The hallways were dark and dim. The front lobby area was nice, light and looked nice. I thought the parking fee they charge their guests was absurd. I won’t ever be coming back I’m sorry to say.
- 5/5
We have an awesome stay here. Friendly and helpful Staffs. Great location, so many things we can do and lots of variety of dining choices. We Love to stay here again when we return to sf.
- 5/5
Parking was easy but expensive. The location of this property was excellent and reasonably priced.
- 5/5
Very historic and slightly old property that was well maintained and clean.
- 5/5
The staff were pretty nice and friendly. The check-in and check-out processes were fast and efficient. The hotel is nice, a bit dated with some remodeling done. But it’s definitely not modern or new. It’s in a good neighborhood and close to a lot of tourist spots. I’m at close to the Moscone so that was what made me stay here.
- 5/5
It was a great stay in the heart of San Francisco
- 5/5
Localizacion
- 5/5
This was not a fancy hotel but everything from the room to all amenities were amazing. Very well managed. Rooms were cleaned daily. Functioning fitness centre. I would definitely give it 5 stars!!!
- 4/5
The property is in a great location in downtown San Francisco. However it is an older hotel so some the rooms and bathrooms are very small.
- 4/5
Staff were super helpful
- 5/5
Todo bien exelente servicio
- 1/5
Took my deposit and I didn’t do anything will never book again I don’t recommend this place.
- 5/5
Comfy bed, slightly dated rooms. Pool was a big plus. Great location.
- 5/5
Pool was clean, Staff is polite and helpful and the rooms are comfortable and clean.
- 5/5
Great location! Nice rooms. Heated pool was a plus.
- 1/5
Internet did not work. Toilet handle did not work. Room smelled
- 4/5
i didnt use the pool but i did see someone else using it and i could see the heat coming off it! Quite a few empty or buildings in the area made it feel less busy than i was expecting. Union square is a community space with different events happening in the weekend or evenings.

Very friendly staff great location
- 5/5
We had a great stay
- 4/5
The hotel is located in a perfect area. Lots of restaurants within walking distance. The trolley and Bart station are also close by. The staff was friendly. Room was clean. There’s a mini fridge in the room. No microwave. Bathroom has all the amenities you might need. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion. Overall great experience. Will definitely be back.
- 5/5
This hotel was very clean and conveniently located near shopping, plenty of restaurant options and transportation. I love the easy checkin and attentive staff.
- 5/5
Good
- 5/5
Clean room great location! Walking distance to a lot of places. Parking is super expensive! $67 per night & no in & out.
- 3/5
Nice
- 3/5
!
- 5/5
The hotel was a historic building with lots of charm. Very friendly attentive service upon walking in made check in a breeze. Room was clean, comfy but a little loud being not on the 2nd floor and facing a busy street. Toilet paper took a few minutes to find but otherwise the room was great. The sheets were soft and the bed comfy. While we didn’t go in the pool, we walked out to check it out and it looked very beautiful and clean. Great location and would happily choose to stay there again.
- 5/5
Beautiful grounds and lovely room.
- 5/5
Rooms are perfect and staff is super friendly definitely recommend!
- 5/5
Yes . Pop mart, Nike , Victoria’s Secret were all near by . Staff is awesome.
- 5/5
Always a great stay
- 4/5
Pool was out
- 3/5
The staff was excellent, no doubt about that. But the condition of the rooms was a different story… the first room we got had a sewage smell. Was transferred to a different room but there also was a musky/moldy smell it gave me bad allergies. The rooms/carpets are just really old. I dont think the price we paid was fair.
- 3/5
Location is great and room (272) in general was OK. However, need improvement with the internet connection as it was very slow. We also had a problem with the shower, when the button that changes the water flow from the shower to the tub would automaticaly change, so it was an inconvenience to continue to push the botton to get the shower flow again.
- 5/5
Location is perfect. Staff were awesome and friendly. Room was great.
- 1/5
The hotel bed sheet and pillow smell, and there are even bloodstains on bed sheet. I could not get asleep almost the whole night.
- 5/5
Room was nice and clean, the staff are amazing, especially to Shiley she was the best 👍
- 5/5
Spotless room, beautiful historic hotel in SF.
- 3/5
Location is great Staff was indifferent- no complaints .
- 2/5
The location was not bad, good places to eat around that are walking distance. The room itself was really small for 2 adults and 2 kids. The restroom was really small, especially the shower amd poorly structured. Our key also was deactivated around 10, check was 11. We went down for a new key to get our stuff after breakfast, as was told, and still didnt work. They had to go up with a master key.
- 5/5
Awesome historical hotel centrally located just steps away from Union Square and Powell St. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Tne rooms comfortable and spacious. The only disadvantage is that the hotel doesn’t have a restaurant or coffee shop. There is a little smell throughout the property. But in general we enjoyed our stay
- 5/5
Always nice stay
- 5/5
staff was very generous
- 4/5
Clean room (a little tired but comfortable). Great staff, very friendly and helpful. Great location, I love staying at the Handlery and make it my choice every chance I get.
- 5/5
Great location for walking around
- 4/5
The hotel is in a good area
- 4/5
Clean room, friendly cleaning staff, great fitness room, great location.
- 1/5
The body wash bottle in the room only had enough product for one use. The air conditioning buttons were very old, difficult to understand, and not functioning properly. The room itself was too small. There were two old phones displayed in the lobby. I briefly touched one of them, and a front desk staff member yelled at me in front of other guests, telling me not to touch it. There was no sign indicating that guests were not allowed to touch the phones. Additionally, the shower water was not hot enough. Overall, the facilities felt outdated and poorly maintained.
- 5/5
The room was clean, the staff was very friendly and helpful. Great location and very quiet. The only thing is that the room was quite warm and we had to leave the window open all night. The thermostat in the room was not working.
- 4/5
The room was simple but clean and quiet. For a short stay it was a great value and location.
- 2/5
Rooms are old a lot of construction at the time and they want to over charge for parking and anything else you need.
- 4/5
It was good
- 3/5
Our two rooms were right by the pool which we thought was great, but it turns out the pool is a major walkway to get from one wing to the other. We constantly had peopled walking by our glass doors with luggage talking loudly at all hours. The concierge was extremely rude. Get advice from the front desk staff instead. We had reservations at the House of Prime Rib and asked her the best way to get there. She laughed and said Oh! you will NEVER get in there! We've had reservations for six months. One of the front desk staff was pretty rude to me at check in, talked to me like a child, but not too big of a deal. He had an hispanic name. Rooms were ok. Great location. The only microwave available is in the kitchen by the lobby, so called 24 hours. We waited for someone to unlock the kitchen for about a half hour and then he never even turned on the lights. We heated up our food in the dark. They don't seem to care much about you but most are somewhat friendly. Somewhat.
- 5/5
Best part about the hotel is the night auditor Stephanie, she has amazing customer service skills and i keep returning because she impresses me every time. Rooms are clean and medium firm beds, good wifi, good black out curtains, windows can be opened in the room, close to union square close to subway and cable cars! Wheel chair accessible hotel
- 5/5
Great location!
- 3/5
Beds are 2 full size beds
- 5/5
Very attentive and friendly staff, really seemed to care about our stay. The room was clean and a good size. Also quiet and safe.
- 5/5
Great location, clean property, with friendly and attentive staff.
- 3/5
Lovely hotel but do not be deceived by the photo of the swimming pool. It is under construction until May 2026. Hotel.com’s advertising is completely misleading when it cites the pool on its ‘front page’ as a selling point for staying there. Also, the pool is about half the size of what it appears in the photo. I would not have paid what I did for this hotel if I had known the pool wasn’t open. All staff were professional and friendly and the hotel is clean and well situated.
- 5/5
Big rooms, friendly staff, great location
- 5/5
Room was clean staff was nice and also efficient.
- 5/5
Great
- 1/5
Awful. They sell double bed rooms online but then don’t give you two beds. They don’t honor a receipt that shows you paid for two beds. Terrible customer service. When I asked for support with the issue the manager refused to help, refused to give me her name and had no ability or willingness to fix the issue.
- 5/5
Quiet room Sink leaked but they fixed it
- 1/5
First the night manager that was there when we arrived was horrible and rude. He said he was going to upgrade our room well we got a down grade compared to the room we booked. Then he said he was giving us a bottle of wine well it came with the room I booked so he didn’t give anything and it was a cheep and nasty bottle. The heated pool was out of service a big reason why we booked here so the kids do swim and relax. Expedia said they sent a email about the pool after we got booked the room. I never got it. When we got to our room the toilet was clogged had to call 3 times to have someone fix it. Room was small and shower was even smaller it was a horrible stay
- 4/5
Hotel is fine just need to update the king mattress, wasn’t very comfortable
- 5/5
This hotel is wonderdul & so os its staff, the only thong that could us improvement was the bed, it was not comfortable at all, other than that we woll definitely stay here again!
- 5/5
stay was at a perfect location.
- 5/5
Our room was huge, spotless, and perfect. The staff is super friendly and helpful and the hotel is in a very safe and absolutely fantastic location! Great restaurants, shopping, and transportation all around. We can’t wait to go back and will be doing so in a few months!
- 5/5
Clean, functional room and great staff.
- 2/5
Looks like they put paint on an old room and called it a day. Bathroom was tiny. There was mold and rot on the bathroom door frame. Pool was closed but was not disclosed until check in. Staff was friendly enough. Parking was hard to find as it was around the back of the building and was still expensive.
- 4/5
Yes th room was clean and the staff very friendly
- 5/5
Spacious rooms and the pool is special. Excellent location in the city. I would recommend and stay again. Feels very safe.
- 5/5
The room is big, it is clean a bit old. Staff are super excellent. Love their service
- 5/5
The staff were friendly and very helpful especially Joyce who delivered excellent services . I like here friendly vibes and helpful attitudes,
- 5/5
Yes
- 4/5
Room was clean, staff was friendly
- 5/5
Clean room, nice staff, easy check in and valet services
- 5/5
Thoroughly enjoyed our time here!!!!
- 5/5
Friendly staff great location
- 3/5
The floor of my room had an odd smell. The staff isn’t very friendly
- 5/5
Front desk staff were great and the concierge, Judy was very helpful and informative.
- 5/5
Clean room, decent price, great location for our downtown sf needs and touristing on cable car, pool was lovely add, every staff we interacted with was very nice.
- 5/5
Location and reasonable rates
- 5/5
great location, awesome room, expensive parking
- 2/5
On my second day of my stay here, one of the front desk staff followed me and my guest to their vending machines and proceeded to tell us that we did not look like their normal guests that stay at their hotel and asked what we were doing in the hotel and I told them that we were guests at the hotel and I showed him my room key card along with my ID then he proceeded to ask me for my room key card while I literally was showing it to him. This is not acceptable. I stay at this hotel all the time but I will not stay here anymore after this incident.
- 4/5
Staff is friendly. The hotel is clean. However, amenities are limited (no coffee/tea in the lobby in the morning, pool closes at 8pm).
- 5/5
The rooms were clean and comfortable. The staff was very helpful and friendly
- 5/5
Second time staying here I really like this place it’s quiet
- 5/5
The staff was wonderful. The room was very clean and spacious. Loved the charm!
- 5/5
Easy parking, quick check in process. Convenient location. Easy walking to restaurants and theaters.
- 4/5
Clean, nice staff.
- 5/5
My mom loved her stay she got confused in your hallways a couple of times.
- 5/5
Everything was clean and had great service. I love it here!
- 5/5
Large room. Clean. Great location. Friendly staff.
- 5/5
Staff was friendly and room was clean no problems
- 4/5
Great location, room was clean and staff was helpful.
- 2/5
Uncomfortable bed and pillows. Every morning loud noises coming from inside of walls.
- 5/5
This is a very nice hote in a convenient location with great amenities.
- 4/5
Great location at Union Square and clean rooms. Front desk and staff were helpful and friendly
- 4/5
The room was clean and the hotel staff were very friendly.
- 5/5
The hotel is in a excellent location, the room was comfortable and the staff were very friendly specially the ones who work in the garage area
- 4/5
Very courteous staff…
- 2/5
The bathroom smelled bad, old damp kind of smell. We had to keep its door closed. The air vent cover in the bedroom above the bed was full of dust and lint. It needed cleaning. There was debris on the carpet, left by mal-functioning vacuum cleaner we were told.
- 5/5
Checking in and out was easy. Staff friendly and helpful. Handlery is in the heart of Union Square and within walking distance to restaurants, stores, the theater and Chinatown. When I’m in the city I always choose the Handlery. My only complaint would be having a discounted rate for parking if you are guests at the hotel. We parked in another garage that was considerably cheaper.
- 5/5
The employees were very nice and the room was large and quiet
- 5/5
Location was great for shopping. Lots of different places to eat. Great staff and service
- 5/5
Nop
- 5/5
Nice
- 5/5
Ok place to stay
- 3/5
Rooms were ok (no hot water) and parking is a bit expensive
- 5/5
Everything was great , except for the valet. They were terrible. Other than that the actual hotel was good. I’d definitely recommend it for stays in SF
- 3/5
However, the room itself was disappointing. We were placed right next to the pool with a sliding door entrance, which meant constant foot traffic and noise outside our door day and night. The walls are incredibly thin, and the room showed significant wear and tear that didn't align with the $250+ nightly rate. On a positive note, the staff was very friendly and welcoming throughout our stay.
- 5/5
The staff was terrific and the room was quiet, comfortable and very well appointed. Great experience very near all the holiday action in Union Square — and an excellent value.
- 5/5
Clean, comfortable beds, all amenities operable.
- 5/5
Clean and comfortable.
- 4/5
Staff was warm, friendly and professional!
- 5/5
Facilities need renovation but overall very clean. Staff is attentive. In the heart of the city near all public transportation. Very convenient and value for the money. Very satisfied and highly recommended.
- 5/5
Everything was perfect from booking to check-in, from courteous staff to clean rooms. And its right in the middle of where-everything-happens-in-the-city. Everything was just a stones throw away...food, grocery, shopping. Price wise?...definitely, I was wise enough to book into Handlery Union.
- 4/5
Rooms were a little worn. I stayed with a king size bed and a room with two beds. The heat was an issue with the king size bed ; an extra heater and more blankets helped. We had no problems with the double room.
- 5/5
friendly staff and spacious rooms. only complaint is my bf (ex bf now) went through my phone during our stay and now are broken up but that has nothing to do with the hotel lol other than that i would 10/10 reccomend
- 5/5
It was nice and comfy clean and especially it was quiet
- 4/5
This is a good hotel for the price
- 5/5
The hotel was a bit dated, but the staff were excellent. The room was comfortable. I especially want to thank Ms Rina Salangad and Sheila Curameng for their superb service. Overall, I had a good experience at this hotel.
- 5/5
Very friendly staff.
- 2/5
This is really a 2.5 star review. The staff were great, the room was nice. The free water bottles were nice. The part that made it a living hell was the permeating cigarette smoke that only got worse with the AC/Heat on. I woke up in the middle of the night with a sore throat, allergies, stuffy nose. All caused by a flood of cigarette smoke. I had to open the balcony door and turn off the AC/Heat so it would mostly dissipate. The sad part was it was all over the hotel. If you’re allergic or sensitive to cigarette smoke, I wouldn’t recommend this hotel.
- 5/5
Was able to get early check-in with no added cost Place is nice. Environment is San Francisco good location near public transportation will definitely stay again
- 5/5
The staff at The Handlery Hotel is fabulous! The bellman Melvin was so helpful, kind, nice and made us feel so welcome. The Concorde was also very nice and helpful. I love that they have rooms with sliding glass doors that open up to the pool area, very nice accommodations.
- 4/5
The room thermostat was faulty and did not work properly so after complaining we were moved to a nicer room. The room was larger, clean and the staff were responsive to our need.
- 5/5
Check-in was great! Reserving parking was great! Room was very clean. The two-sided mirror in the bathroom was clearly positioned for someone way taller than me! (Not great) Coffee maker and cups too small for coffee lovers like me! We needed another blanket on the beds, not only for warmth but also for added weight. We asked for them and got them quickly, so thank you!
- 5/5
Outstanding value and a great experience.
- 4/5
The hotel was clean but the elevator doors on the inside looked very worn down.
- 4/5
The room was very good. The staff was courteous. Very conveniently located. Clean and well run! Thank you!
- 4/5
Good stay
- 2/5
Reserved online parking advertised at $65 per night. Upon arrival they said it would be $75 plus tax because our standard truck was a “larger” vehicle bringing the one night parking stay at their hotel over $85. The room fee was only $145. Outrageous for one night and they need to state the higher rate when advertising it as an add on for your stay. The room was very nice however the parking left a bad taste
- 5/5
Would stay again. Staff was great. Room was great. Loby was great. Location great. Room size was good. Large walk in closet to store items. Full size bathroom.
- 4/5
Staff was great and so much you can walk to
- 5/5
Very nice place very recommend 👌
- 3/5
The owner needs to actually invest into the property as the rooms are dated for what they cost. They put up wallpaper and called it a remodelling, but the bathroom is 50+ years old. AC is super loud, you need earplugs to sleep well.
- 5/5
The staff was extremely accommodating when it came to traveling with the person with the disability.
- 4/5
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
- 3/5
Much needed upgrades
- 3/5
Mattress could have been better since I have a bad back. Also very noisy in the hall way.
- 4/5
The showerhead leaked and had little pressure. The bed was too hard for us as we are seniors.
- 3/5
The room was made up with the thinest blanket. I asked to be provided another blanket and they brought another thin threadbare one which was not warm enough.
- 5/5
All of it was great! We will definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Everything met expectations, and at a reasonable price.
- 5/5
Clean hotel, great location, kind staff!
- 5/5
Good service
- 4/5
Staff was helpful and friendly, room was clean and quiet with decent view. I’m only giving it 4 stars due to the 65$ per night parking
- 5/5
What and excellent location and very good Hotel stay service and rooms clean and safe area
- 5/5
Very nice lobby nice rooms everything's clean very friendly staff lots of different kinds of food and lots of good shopping all nearby
- 5/5
Clean room and hot water
- 3/5
the heat was hard to figure out, very old. Someone from the front desk did come to turn it on.
- 5/5
Clean room. Right at Union square
- 5/5
Clean, quiet and friendly staff. Great location with options to do anything throughout the city.
- 3/5
The prices of parking were not included in the price on hotels.com. Costing an extra $75 a day was very costly. The room did not match the description on hotels.com either. The patio was over in the pictures was overlooking the city. But our room was looking at the back of buildings.
- 5/5
Couple’s getaway great location for dinning and shopping safe hotel
- 4/5
I was upset that my booking online showed connecting rooms. However, when I asked the front desk to confirm if I am set up with the rooms side by side she didn't know. She also couldn't do anything about it and just handed me my room cards and mentioned that she hope they were connecting. As if she didn't know the hotel room numbers. This was a big issue for me since I was traveling with my small children however, I didn't pursue to investigate further with a manager because I was very tired. My husband and I decided to split for the night. Please advise hotels to try to make changes if possible.
- 5/5
Loved this property. Will be coming back for pride! Well located and safe.
- 5/5
The hotel is located just minutes from the square, good atmosphere and comfortable rooms and accessible everywhere you want
- 2/5
Room was downgraded when I paid extra for a balcony.
- 5/5
Parking check in was slow but we arrived at a busy time. Nice that they have valet option with in/out privileges. Although there is no restaurant on site, they have made arrangements with several restaurants nearby to offer discounts. Just show your keycard. Nice touch! We have another favorite place to stay in SF.
- 4/5
The location is perfect. The manager was rude. The front deck clerk and garage person were pleasant
- 4/5
Staff were pleasant and helpful.....but a kettle in the room would have been a bonus...
- 3/5
Staff is amazing! Management needs to hire more parking valet though. The gentleman was trying his best in getting all the cars to guest quickly. Additionally, the rooms don’t look like the pictures but if you’re looking for a spot that you will just be sleeping it’s a cool area. Most likely won’t be going back but over all it was okay.
- 1/5
Word down; heat/AC does not work, horrible rooms.
- 5/5
Fantastic, clean, great hotel. Staff was also wonderful. Great location. Can't wait to come back.
- 5/5
I have stayed at this property a few times. Always convenient.
- 4/5
Loved the amenities-nice to have a heated pool, sauna and small gym. Room was spacious and super nice having a little balcony. I appreciated there were no "wake-up" housekeeping calls
- 5/5
Clean room, friendly staff and great location
- 3/5
Great location. I appreciate the bellmen very friendly and helpful. Valet is the only option on property. I was fine with the rate but one man in the valet staff was rude and seemed to hate his job. Valet was the only issue with our stay.
- 5/5
The room was very clean. The hotel was also very quiet. A very nice hotel to stay in.
- 5/5
Love it
- 5/5
The staff is very nice. The rooms are clean, and close to restaurants.
- 5/5
Great hotel, center of everything! Definitely will stay here again.
- 4/5
It was great a bit difficult checking in other then that good
- 4/5
Location and value are excellent! Hotel is older and wear shows in the rooms but overall rooms are large, comfortable and the location is great.
- 5/5
I've stayed at this hotel a few times. It's always a great stay. Great location, clean room and kind staff. I had a room overlooking Geary St and it was still quiet and comfortable. Highly recommend.
- 3/5
Clean room but air conditioning vents were dirty and curtain was ripped. Dirty air conditioning vents are torture for folks with allergies and ripped curtains cheapens the hotel. However, staff are courteous and helpful.
- 5/5
Very clean rooms, lovely pool, and friendly staff.
- 3/5
For the price,
- 5/5
Clean room and friendly staff
- 4/5
Walls are thin and room is small but affordable for in the city. Stayed here twice. Would stay again.
- 5/5
They went above and beyond when they found out it was our anniversary. They upgraded us and sent some wine over as well. It was truly an amazing memory for us.
- 5/5
Great place to stay.
- 5/5
Very nice hotel! Great location.
- 4/5
Everything was fine.
- 4/5
Good room. Good location. Pooooor and unstable Wifi.
- 5/5
Loved the room and staff. The room had the perfect view and was so clean.
- 5/5
Great location for first timers in the city. Transport, restaurants, shops can't be closer. Very friendly and helpful staff. Would recommend it to my closest friends.
- 5/5
Great Staff and Service
- 5/5
The staff was very friendly, the room was very clean and tidy
- 5/5
I had pretty limited expectation but it was honestly good. Staff was professional and Union Square was cleaned up - bravo San Francisco!
- 4/5
Average room. It did not look like the photos in the website. Friendly staff.
- 5/5
Wonderful location. Great staff, very friendly and helpful. We loved our stay at the Handlery. We had a room in the middle of the hotel with a small lounge area. It was very quiet and comfortable.
- 4/5
Enjoyed the pool and location.
- 5/5
Hidden gem! Very clean. Upgrade to a premium room for nice patios. Pool was very warm in October!
- 1/5
This is an outdated hotel. The thermostat was not working. The heater was making loud noise. Hallway was dark!! This hotel stings!
- 5/5
Clean and spacious rooms.
- 4/5
Only downside was our cable didnt work. Seems like someone pulled the cable out of the wall. But it just gave us more time to talk.
- 5/5
Good stay for the price, good location lots of options around. Did not check the pool but kids seemed to enjoy it. Was a quiet room. Stayed there before and would stay again.
- 5/5
Staff were very helpful. The room layout was very functional for two friends travelling together. The housekeeping was great and the room was always clean and quiet.
- 5/5
Nice central location for a variety of activities. The parking garage is incredibly convenient.
- 5/5
Very quiet area, large rooms, big windows with small balcony, so plenty of sun light.
- 4/5
Area felt dead, front desk staff seems kinda scattered and not well trained.
- 4/5
The staff very kindly
- 5/5
Staff was amazing, beds were great, the location was walkable to so many good places. Very close to some sketchy areas but never felt unsafe.
- 5/5
Great location. Very friendly and attentive staff. Clean rooms.
- 5/5
Fanastic to stay here for our 2nd stay in the city after venturing inland for a few days, it was great to be able to relax by the pool and chill to recharge before a couple more days of sightseeing prior to returning home. The room was big and well appointed.
- 5/5
The room was clean and quiet. The internet was fast and consistant. The Staff was wonderful
- 4/5
The room was spacious and quiet and very comfortable.
- 4/5
Clean, comfy room. Close to everything.
- 5/5
First time staying at the Handlery Union Square Hotel and I must say it was a pleasant experience! From check in to check out. The staff was beyond accomodating. The hotel lobby is staffed 24 hours a day always smiling, friendly and welcoming.
- 4/5
Our housekeeper was so nice! Overall a good place to stay. It's in a relatively safe and convenient area.
- 5/5
Nice hotel. Great location
- 5/5
Great hotel and great stay.
- 4/5
Love the fact it has a pool-could use some attention (resurfacing tile, cleanliness) and the pool and sauna , sauna especially, were hard to find. Singage was very poor. Staff was friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
Great stay
- 4/5
Was nice, comfortable and clean. Great location for cable cars and shopping near union square
- 5/5
S
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
Would stay again!!
- 5/5
Love stay at this property when visiting San Francisco. Francisco is extremely close to all tourist attractions in Union Square clean customer service will return.
- 4/5
Loved the location close by to Union Square, shops/places to eat all walkable. Would have preferred to have air conditioning / fans in the room to make the stay more comfortable.
- 4/5
A good stay. I travel a lot to the SF area. This was a big nightly price for me, much more than I usually choose to pay. It was nice but it was a lot per night.
- 5/5
The location was great and it was clean and the pool and courtyard make the place. Right downtown theatre district. I will stay again
- 5/5
It was challenging getting luggage to/from room as the lift was broken
- 3/5
The weather was cold for us to use the pool so we didn’t check it out.
- 5/5
Loved it, thanks
- 5/5
Nice big room. Immediate surrounding area is OK; go a few blocks and its an area with lots of street people ; empty storefronts;etc
- 5/5
Housekeeping excellent service
- 3/5
The facilities are outdated and noisy, and the front-door attendant in the morning responded to questions with a poor attitude.
- 5/5
Good location
- 4/5
.
- 4/5
very nice stay
- 5/5
The staff was very helpful and the room was kept very clean. Just a note the pool is not suitable for lap swimming but great for lounging. I would recommend that the hotel put in a small motion sensitive light in the bathroom. Those 2 things aside I enjoyed my stay.
- 4/5
Pool
- 5/5
Was a perfect location for our needs
- 4/5
Room good size and had a little swimming pool but we didn’t have time to take advantage as we were too busy with visiting all the attractions
- 5/5
Loved it here. Perfect location that did not break the bank. Liked being able to exit from Geary street or O’farrells. So close to Union square and shopping. And easy to walk to from the train stations (only a few blocks up a slight uphill grade).
- 5/5
Nice stay, good area, some local dining close by, Starbucks on corner, a local coffee and bagel shop very close. The one thing I did not like was they charged me $10 more per night for over sized vehicle. Other than that it was convenient and very fast Valet parking.
- 5/5
The staff was very helpful. I forgot my contact solution and the staff gave me great directions to a drug store and looked up the hours to make sure it was still open. Room was comfortable and clean. Carpet and other decor was a bit outdated but otherwise perfect. Great value!
- 5/5
We really liked the Handlery! It was close to a variety of tourist attractions like the cable cars. And quite easy access to BART and buses. All very walkable. No complaints with the room - clean and very comfortable. We will stay here again with pleasure.
- 5/5
It was exactly what we needed for a night. Reasonable price for the quality of the room and cleanliness. It is a few blocks from the tenderloin so definitely be careful walking at night alone
- 5/5
The staff was very nice and helpful, pool was great, and the room was spacious!

Great location. Walking distance to many food and drink locations as well as easy walk to Chinatown. Street trolleys right out the door. Super convenient. Walked from the Powell BART station.
- 3/5
Not much shopping option around the area these days. Room is okay, with old carpet but it’s functional and staffs are doing their best to keep this old building going.

Handlery was perfect for us , nice service , very clean

Interior bit tired but clean.
- 5/5
Is EXCELLENT!!!
- 4/5
Small room, otherwise nice property.
- 5/5
Hotel was great but our room would only cool down to 78 with the AC all the way down. Had to get a fan brought up and that helped. location was great.
- 4/5
Nice room, not straight forward to get too. Secure parking not easy to identify.
- 5/5
Wonderful staff! Very friendly and willing to help with anything we needed. The hotel was clean, in the perfect area to explore San Francisco, cable car was just out the door.
- 5/5
We enjoyed our stay very much. The hotel was clean and our room was great. The staff was wonderful - especially the men in the garage. Overall, everything was very good.
- 5/5
Location and walkable! Staff is above and beyond nice! The best experience I’ve ever received at a hotel in San Francisco.
- 5/5
Great rooms. Awesome location. Heated pool!!
- 5/5
Love live this place and can’t beat the location.
- 5/5
Close to Union Square and many options for transportation including MUNI, BART and bus.
- 5/5
I’m giving this property a 5 star rating for excellence. We had a 5am flight and had an early check out time. After arriving home, I realized I left behind a pair of brand new Chanel sunglasses. I called the front desk and the very kind, honest and wonderful guy at the front desk promptly located the sunglasses and was able to get them returned to me. This type of service is above and beyond. I appreciate your kindness!

I come here for the balconies (in certain rooms), the coffee in-room, the friendly staff, cold AC, comfortable bed, fabulous location and heated outdoor pool.
- 5/5
Great location with good rates for the area, and I loved that they had a pool!
- 5/5
Friendly and helpful staff. Room was just what I needed.
- 4/5
Clean room great staff. A good location for transportation ( other than car ). Area suffering from lack of investment. I would estimate 35 -45 %under occupancy of stores, which causes a considerable fall in foot traffic . Very noticeable with lots of homeless people .
- 5/5
All good
- 5/5
Definitely would stay here again. Great location in Union Square area and room was spacious and quiet. Inside room had a small couch and chair which provided a comfortable place to hang out when not out and about in the city. Our room also came with an outdoor balcony with additional seating. Room furniture was up to date and very nice. Also has very nice outdoor heated pool.
- 5/5
We had an absolutely fantastic stay at this hotel, and the staff there is amazing.
- 5/5
Convenient location and Friendly staffs
- 5/5
Lovely big and well equipped room. Great location and very friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend!
- 3/5
The only issues i had was with the single queen, the ac was very outdated and so was the tv, the window didn’t open, it was only problems within the room, all else is definitely a bang for you’re buck.
- 5/5
Great location, it’s an older hotel and yet very well maintained! Nice place and wonderful spot close to Powell station.
- 5/5

An excellent facility, with good room great staff and efficient and pleasant cleaning staff. We’ll position very near the cable car and plenty of cafes, restaurants and diners nearby. A wonderful place to stay. Reasonably priced and would stay again.

Clean room, hospital employees very friendly above in being to get stoked and help when needed. Busy area, and felt safe walking in my group day and night.
- 4/5
The view was not good, and the AC/heater was not resettable, but it was a good short stay overall.

- 4/5
Easy to get around San Fransisco. Didn't like the homeless and drug people around the City.
- 4/5
The street lights shown i. The windows all night. To blackout curtains so it was like staying in Alaska in the summertime, the sun never sets
- 5/5
Enjoyed our stay
- 2/5
Rooms extremely noisy. No core doors. Could hear conversations outside. No cafeteria, nowhere nearby to grab a snack
- 4/5
Would love to see the lounge and restaurant open since they don’t offer microwaves in the rooms. Bathroom areas are tiny. Pillows not comfortable. People were very friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
This place is always a great place to stay at. We stay here every time we go to San Francisco.
- 5/5

- 5/5
Rooms were a bit small but the hotel was clean and comfortable.
- 4/5
Clean hotel, we had a balcony!
- 4/5
This hotel is clean and comfortable, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. It is also an excellent value for downtown San Francisco. Unfortunately, the Union Square area of the city still has a fair number of homeless people wandering around, although for the most part, they don't seem to bother anyone.
- 4/5
Outdoor pool was nice.
- 5/5
The room was very comfortable and spacious. The hotel is very centrally located. We very much enjoyed our stay!
- 4/5
Comfortable and clean. Excellent location but really old... need a huge remodel...

We had a great time staying at this hotel, so many walkable options!! The door man and staff were all very nice. Union square and Nintendo are on the corner, so that’s where we caught the big bus for touring for 2 days. We were also close to the pick up spot for our Yosemite trip. We would stay here again!!
- 5/5
Older hotel but well maintained. Excellent staff.
- 4/5
Hotel en buena ubicación, el personal es súper amable, es limpio pero el hotel necesita una remodelación, las habitaciones y los baños no son como las fotos, necesitan ser renovados.

Good hotel with very helpful staff. Central downtown location
- 2/5
Room has a horrible smell. AC is a struggle. People are nice, but the rooms are old, dated and not worth the price
- 5/5
Easy check-in but unsure why I had manually complete my personal info, which had been collected through the website. One block from theatre for our matinee performance.
- 5/5
Nice staff and room was comfortable and clean. Would stay again definitely.

- 5/5
Lovely hotel well located ijust off Union Square , premium room large with sitting area and dressing room as well a good size bathroom with tub . Ground floor room had own patio area with chairs onto the pool which felt like your own private pool at times very helpful cheerful staff throughout hotel.
- 5/5
Provided discounts to nearby food and entertainment.
- 5/5
The hotel was clean with a nice heated pool in the middle of Union square.
- 5/5
Great location and you can basically walk to every place you want to go. You can catch the bart, uber, or Waymo. We had a pleasant experience and would stay there again
- 4/5
Excellent staff but the building is dated. The location was outstanding for dining, transportation and shopping.
- 5/5
This hotel was lovely with a beautiful lobby, and friendly staff. I enjoyed my spacious room with a nice sized bathroom. Even though I didn’t swim during my visit, I love that this San Francisco hotel had an outdoor pool.

Property was old getting to the room was inconvenient
- 5/5
Nice clean room, big bed. Shower pressure could have been better but that is the only fault
- 5/5

- 5/5

I loved my stay at Handlery. The staff are really lovely, rooms are spacious and clean and well equipped with everything you need to be comfortable. I enjoyed using the pool too. I felt safe and had every need met. Nothing was too much trouble. I will book again without hesitation.
- 4/5
The concierge was condescending.
- 5/5
- 3/5
Great location near stores and small restaurants, the entire neighborhood has questionable citizens that ruins the entire neighborhood however the rooms are extremely small there also was blood stains on the door that I complained about the maintenance guy shrugged me off and basically looked at me as delusional. I wouldn’t stay here again and don’t recommend
- 4/5
No breakfast or restaurant available

- 5/5

Located a stone's throw away from Union Square the hotel is right in the heart of the city and within easy walking distance of numerous transit options. Check-was straightforward and the staff were helpful. The premier room I received was roomy and comfortable enough but the décor and overall feel was dated. The basics were good but other amenities were subpar. The wifi was slow and unreliable, the power outlets would cut out if you used a high-power USB-C charger, and the in-room safe was broken. The hotel pool was heated decently but was small. A nicely-equipped fitness center was on the premises as an alternative exercise option. Although the hotel itself lacks a restaurant numerous food options were in easy reach. As for the immediate neighborhood, it seemed to avoid the worst of SF's homeless and druggy situation but not entirely, so best not to just let your guard down. Taking this all together made the Handlery an okay place to stay but just okay. Serviceable rather than superb.
