Reviews
The Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco is a historic and beautiful property with a convenient location in Union Square. Guests generally appreciate the friendly and helpful staff, comfortable beds, and clean rooms. However, some guests have complained about the high cost of parking, construction noise, and issues with room cleanliness.

They failed to clean my room one day even with the DND sign off. I got back at 8:30pm to the room and reported it to housekeeping. They said they would send someone up right away they did not. I received a call at 11pm from housekeeping telling me they cleaned the wrong room and should they come up now. I advised I was asleep and they woke me up and not to come to the room. Less then thrilled with housekeeping and that it took over 2 hours for someone to contact me.

The hotel was great, but we had to leave early due to my husband’s major surgery and follow up here in NC. Our remaining $ for the hotel was not refunded which was over $1000.00.
- 5/5
The staff were amazing! They greet you every time they see you! They address us by our names which was nice! The room was comfortable and spacious. Shopping within walking distance of the hotel. The Bourbon Steak bar was amazing drinks were on point. Then we decided to eat at the restaurant I definitely look forward to coming back. The only thing I didn’t like was they charge $100 a night to park at the hotel although we were staying there.

Really nice hotel. Even though the rooms are old, they are kept so nice and clean. The hotel is within walkable distance of many things in union square. Public transportation is also nearby so getting around the city is easy.

From the moment you walk in the front door this hotel just oozes glamour! Excellent staff, great dining, wonderful location in the city! It's a fantastic destination which I will surely enjoy again!
- 5/5
The hotel is very nice and my room was clean and very comfortable.
- 3/5
It's delusional, giving the price tag. Even the WiFi isn't really free. Room service feel like a trap with 9%+15% fee on restaurant dishes that don't show prices upfront!! Breakfast meaningless, check-in staff is really bad and confused, not forthcoming and definitely unhelpful.
- 5/5
Extraordinary experience! If I go back to SFC, I will stay there again with my family!
- 1/5
The hotel is clearly outdated and does not meet the standards expected at this price point. The front desk staff was unwelcoming, which set a poor tone for the stay from the start. Overall, the experience fell short, and I would strongly recommend considering other options in the area that offer better value and service.

The location is great, and we really enjoyed an after symphony nightcap in the Bourbon lounge The hotel is understaffed. We waited ten minutes at the luggage desk to pick up our stored bss. The obey is also disappointingly generic. The old elegance is largely gone.
- 4/5
Centrally located. Bourbon Steak house restaurant was terrific. Staff at the restaurant were very attentive. We did experience an unusual long wait at check-in, but desk staff were very helpful. I only wish attention to our room for service would have been better. But overall very friendly staff. Comfortable room, with great views.

Hotel was beautiful, elegant, and the staff were very friendly. If you love”old” hotels with history and centrally located, then this is a place for you. Because it is an “older” hotel, the smell in our room was a bit musty.
- 5/5
Yvonne super friendly and helpful
- 5/5
Very centrally located in downtown. Next door to Union Square. Room was spacious and clean.
- 5/5
Clean rooms, attentive staff, and so many fun and luxery shops nearby. The experience was amazing and I'd stay there again!
- 1/5
They force surcharges every time you turn around, it's wildly extractive and completely inappropriate
- 5/5
The staff was amazing.

Location and quality of faciliities I was charged by booking.com months ago and charged by Westin as well. Westin said they will return the money but it hasnt occurred yet.

Clean room, very helpful staff. Nice old hotel with old Wood features and high ceilings. Comfortable bed.
- 5/5
Location was excellent. Everyone that we encountered was very kind.

The elevators sounded like a train from our room. Also, the bed felt like sleeping on plywood.

The location of this hotel was perfect. Close to shops and restaurants. The room was a huge disappointment. The bathroom is definitely in need of a remodel. They need to put in a walk in shower especially for older adults. Also the day we were leaving we found a roach in our room. We understand that we are staying in a major city but it was still unsettling to say the least.
- 5/5
Wonderful hotel and amenities! Great service
- 5/5
Clean room, excellent service when checking in, and close to many shopping areas.
- 5/5

- 5/5
The Westin Saint Francis never disappoints. The staff is impeccable from the bell staff to the front desk to the housekeeping. The new restaurant and bar is fantastic. We stay here at least once a year for our staycation one of the best locations in San Francisco.
- 3/5
Parking pricing is ridiculous. 84.00 a night.
- 2/5
The valet service was not properly staffed and was causing traffic issues and major delays. I prepaid for valet but the delays were to significant that I had to park our car in the union square parking lot. I’m disappointed that management would give me an excuse that they can’t control the traffic but the problem was with staffing and valet procedures during holiday weekends.

The location was perfect, and what truly made our stay exceptional was the staff. Every single employee we encountered was kind, professional, and genuinely welcoming. From check-in at the front desk, to the concierge, housekeeping, valet, bartenders, and all the staff we interacted with throughout our stay — everyone went above and beyond with the best attitude and the most cordial treatment. Even during the busy holiday season, the team was consistently patient, attentive, and incredibly helpful whenever we needed anything. Their warmth and dedication truly stood out and made us feel so well taken care of. If I ever return to San Francisco, I would absolutely choose to stay here again without hesitation. A huge thank you to the entire staff for making our stay so memorable — we are extremely happy with our experience and can’t recommend this hotel enough.
- 5/5
Outstanding customer service. Luis at the front desk was absolutely awesome and took great care to make sure my stay was perfect
- 4/5
Besides the slow check-in process, everything else was wonderful. From valet to front desk, concierge and door staff everyone was friendly and helpful. Valet went out of their way and helped me get an item out of my car that I had forgotten. The rooms were clean and even had an essential oil roller for relaxation. The bar was beautiful even if the music selection felt off. The vibe seemed more jazz bar but the music was more night club. We really enjoyed our stay

I like the traditions of the Westin St. Francis during the holidays. Their Christmas decor, view of Union Square, great shopping and dining options nearby makes it my favorite place to stay.
- 5/5
Staff is amazing as always
- 5/5
Everything at this hotels was absolutely amazing!
- 5/5
Great place and easy to get around.
- 4/5
Check in line was too long but good stay. Overall good experience
- 4/5
Great location. Easy to get to shops, bars and restaurants. Very crowded but knew it was going to be that way being it was the weekend after Christmas. Overall, really nice night at a very nice hotel.
- 4/5
Clean room, although windows were dirty. Bathroom aged with chipped floor and tub. All perfectly clean and usable.
- 4/5
We love this Westin for its location. For the price per night that I paid I expected better room with a nice view. The bed is great but the pullout was awful. Clean room and free water is appreciated. The staff during our stay was unfriendly and not very helpful most of the time.
- 4/5
Rooms was spacious and clean. Front desk was helpful
- 5/5

- 5/5
Staff was great. Clean. Great for my kids with all the fun Christmas decor.
- 5/5
Clean room, friendly staff, free water, and available room service
- 5/5
Stayed here for Holidays with fam, teens and 5 yr old, were local but wanted to experience the city holiday lights. We stayed for 2 nights. All of the staffs from valet to concierge there all nice and happy with great positive energy. Room is clean and spacious, lobby is festively decorated. Glenn from concierge made our stays extra special by providing top notch service. You could really feel the spirit of Christmas.
- 5/5
Lively! Comfy beds
- 5/5
It's the holidays so the line was long checking in, but it moved along. Front desk check-in was very friendly, explained all the amenities, how to get to our room. Stopped at the Concierge (Jeff) and he helped with the Uber credit being offered by the hotel. The room was very comforable, clean, bed and pillows were excellent. I think the thing that stood out most to me was the next morning when I went to grab a coffee, the Concierge Jeff was working and as I walked by (he looked busy so I didn't want to disturb him) he said "Good morning Charmaine!" I was tickled pink that he remembered my name after all the people he must deal with in a day. I felt like a special guest.
- 4/5
Staff was very friendly, our room was very clean.
- 3/5
The negatives….I had to call to get enough bath towels for our room. There aren’t any options of an actual restaurant to have breakfast or lunch at, only grab and go. The hotel bar doesn’t open until 4pm.
- 2/5
Festive and great for walking to all shopping. But dated property . Very average rooms. Open to the public with a small museum in the lobby floor, so masses of people streaming in and out, Blocking access to the cafe and creating big lines. Overall nit the experience I was looking for.
- 5/5
The overall atmosphere and our room were excellent. The lobby was festive and the new lobby bar, although crowded, is a great addition. The only complaint is the parking. It is expensive (nearly $100 overnight), it takes forever to get your car, and the people who run it are arrogant and rude (a change from the rest of the staff at the hotel).
- 3/5
The room really needs updating. We were hoping for a beautiful room to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. The room was beaten up and depressing. Felt like we were staying at a Best Western. Plus, I didn’t like that I couldn’t get a hold of someone directly at the front desk. The only reason why I’m giving it three stars is because the concierge was friendly and seemed to actually care about his job. Needless to say, we will not be coming back…
- 4/5
Was a bit disappointed in the rooms given it’s a Westin
- 3/5
Understanding that this is a busy time of year, the car valet and retrieval service upon check out was poorly staffed/managed, resulting in everyone checking out late morning in having to stand in a long line first to ask for their car, then told they have an additional 45 minute wait for the car to be ready. It seems the hotel should have anticipated and planned for the staffing for such a busy day. Disappointing and another reason to stay with the Mark Hopkins or a hotel of similiar customer service always.
- 3/5
The wait time to check in was excessive, and the surprise $50 fee for adjoining rooms was infuriating. There were loose wires sticking out of the bedroom wall in 2278.
- 1/5
For many years we have enjoyed our stays at the St Francis. Sadly never again. Where do I start? Check in was OK and it was downhill from there. While all staff was great the fact that they were wearing winter coats and scarves meant something. The lobby was about 55 degrees and the hallways on our floor even colder. The room decor was a 5/10 and no mini bars was a surprise. No restaurant for breakfast very disappointing...a coffee bar with fast food at best was disappointing...and extremely expensive for fast food. We are happy to spend lots on great food, we just didn't get any. And, we had to wear winter coats while "dining" in the lobby! The new bar in the lobby, while nice removes the elegance from the lobby entry...which we can't use when the bar isn't open incidentally. Total head scratcher. Someone was actually stationed there preventing our exit for this reason when the bar isn't open. Honestly, with all the changes it was a Holiday Inn Express experience. Looking forward to our next stay in SF at the Ritz, Four Seasons or Fairmont.
- 5/5
This historical location is ideal for anyone visiting the city. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were very attentive. A special thanks to Elaine Dai for making our stay even more enjoyable and unforgettable.
- 5/5
Everything was wonderful.
- 2/5
We were patient and understanding of the busy period; however, when paying a premium rate, a certain level of service and efficiency is expected. Unfortunately, the combination of long delays and uneven service detracted from what should have been a high-quality stay. Pretty disappointed in our experience overall.
- 5/5
All staff were friendly, room was small but clean and updated. Check in was easy. Amenities were great. Location is great.
- 5/5
Room was very clean. Check-in went very well. Staff were very friendly and personable. Fast elevators. Lots of shops. Macy’s,Pandora, Nintendo Gumps, and Sonoma are within 2-5 minutes walk. Not to mention being directly across from Union Square.
- 1/5
Check in was long
- 5/5
Was just fab all around!
- 4/5
Had a wonderful time at the Westin. Beautiful holiday decorations. Hotel Staff Was so professional and helpful. Perfect location by such wonderful history.
- 4/5
No breakfest was offered.
- 5/5
The staff was very helpful with breakfast options, in and out of the hotel based on our preferences and, held our bags after checkout for us to do some sightseeing.
- 5/5
The staff was welcoming and quick with check in and check out. The hotel my room was very clean. The location is perfect. I stay her whenever in San Francisco.
- 5/5
The staff at check in was great, as was the valet parking attendant, as was the nice gentleman who told me where I could get a drink! Everything was great!
- 5/5
Great bed
- 5/5
Everything was a 10/10 for this, our second stay at this hotel. Gorgeous regularly, extra beautiful for Christmas season. Impeccable service and upkeep of the hotel. Everything was fantastic.
- 4/5
Just love the building and beautiful dining room. However white curtains on big arcjed windows dont go with deep emerald decor. Christmas decorations fabulous. Called to get reservation for dining room and told no availability in a very condescending tone.. Went in person and we got a rezervation immediately. Went later to dinner. Great food. NOT anywhere near full. Bad employees cause loss of revenue and ill

Always a great place to stay
- 5/5
Jeff at the concierge desk was amazing
- 2/5
The problem is that I booked a corner room, 398 sq ft, through Expedia, and you, Westin, gave me room 1025, which you can verify is very small! I didn't say anything at the time because I was celebrating my anniversary with my girlfriend and didn't want to upset her with any changes. Furthermore, it was located next to the elevator, and the noise was constant day and night.
- 1/5
The booking was lost! Never using hotels.com again! Led to double charges.
- 5/5
One of the best hotels in California
- 5/5
I love this hotel, it's central to many shops and union square is walkable nowadays.
- 2/5
Staff didn’t fix my phone’s in my room after multiple request. I had a suite and no bathrobes very disappointed in this Westin…
- 5/5

- 5/5
The room was clean and service was great.
- 5/5
Very slow during check-in
- 4/5
Very accessible from shopping ,transportation and touristy spots
- 5/5
The room was excellent. We have never had a bad room there even during the strike and remodel.
- 1/5
Rude staff, rooms are not clean
- 5/5
I love this hotel, always have! The rooms definitely need a makeover- the carpets are pretty dingy and they just feel weathered. The lobby has also been transformed into a restaurant - so not only do you now have to enter through the side near the parking garage, but it's lost the grand beauty it used to offer. But, the staff is amazing and I still love it here.
- 4/5

The front desk was so nice. They checked us in early and the room was very large and quiet.

Well paced upmarket hotel
- 5/5
From the moment we checked in, we were impressed. The staff were absolutely fabulous - especially Herman at the front desk. The rooms were large and had a great view. We felt so pampered we didn't want to leave!
- 3/5
As for the rest of it, I expected better. I made dirty footprints in the shower from filth from the suite's carpet. Gross. The TV system shouldn't be from the 1980s. Low-rent coffee and no 24 hour room service. And I had to laugh: the breakfast buffet is only for "Titanium Members"? A members only breakfast buffet? Are you serious? I couldn't even just pay for it? Classy, glad my party got to see me be denied a breakfast buffet. Room service typically priced on the surface but littered with excessive charges. They're not shy about stacking on the charges every day to the hotel bill itself, either. "Use it or lose it" credits, with footnotes, that kind of thing. I lived in San Francisco nearly 15 years. I know what's there. I stayed at the Westin for convenience. And that's almost literally all you offered. You can and should do better.
- 4/5
Very nice hotel with excellent staff. The offer was a bit confusing with the $35 destination fee. Room was comfortable and clean and location excellent. Room service via QR code wasn't particularly clear but with plenty of outlets in the area not a big deal.
- 5/5
Very friendly staff, clean rooms and excellent location with lots to do in the city.

This is clearly beyond the control of the property itself, but there are so many homeless people outside, it's ridiculous and unsafe. I stepped on human feces half a block away from the hotel entrance!!!

Uno de los hoteles mas hermosos en los que he estado. Muy buena atención.

I would not stay at this hotel again until they complete their construction project. Not their fault, but we had to walk with our luggage around three sides of the large building to find the temporary entrance while our car was illegally parked as there were no open spots. When we checked in, they charged an additional $50 for incidentals of which $20 was a bar credit and another portion was credited towards a rental bike in case you wanted to get run over in their busy streets. Additionally, they gave me a room that was still unmade at 3:30 in the afternoon. Reception apologized profusely and gave me another room down the hallway right next to the elevator. I was already unpacked when I heard what sounded like a freight train. It was the elevator passing my room on the metal track. As I was only there for one night, I put up with that noise as it was quiet all night until about 6 in the morning when the noise woke me up. Also, the streaming feature was not working on the TV, so I delayed watching Netflix until a repair person reset the system. Also, the temporary bar is not amazing. It is like setting in your basement having a drink. The bartenders and the drinks were good. In summary, of the 6 hotels we stayed in during our 8-day trip down the coast, I thought this famous hotel would be the most amazing. It was not. The location is great, and I think it will be fine once the construction is completed in the near future.
- 5/5
It is historic but well preserved hotel. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
- 5/5
This is a lovely hotel with a great staff and an amazing location. We were welcomed and all our fun perks (dining credits, Uber credit, water bottles- great water dispenser btw with flavored, sparkling, lightly sparkling options) were explained to us. We requested and received a late checkout which was so helpful. Our city view was OUTSTANDING- we could see Coit Tower and the Golden Gate!
- 5/5
Quiet, clean, close to attractions

This hotel is DATED but the amenities are fine and staff very friendly. Particularly the concierge!!
- 5/5
Walking distance to Union Square, Meeting room is very clean and very nice.
- 3/5
The Westin San Francisco’s main appeal is its historic building and central Union Square location, but overall the stay was disappointing compared to other Westin properties I have experienced. The main entrance was closed for repairs, leaving guests to enter through a side street that did not feel grand or welcoming. We stayed in a corner suite that was spacious, but the furniture was scratched, the bed frame was held together with painters tape, and the windows were so rusted that only one panel could be opened. The air inside felt stale and dusty, leaving us coughing at night. Staff at the front desk and café seemed disengaged, although housekeeping was very friendly and helpful. Do not expect the modern refreshed feel of other Westin locations, outside of the location itself the property falls short, especially given the high cost and lack of amenities such as a pool.
- 5/5
Clean room . Friendly staff
- 5/5
Loved it!!! This is my new go to when visiting San Francisco
- 5/5
The Westin St. Francis is an elegant hotel. I also enjoyed the fact that there is a museum inside the hotel about its history.
- 5/5
We had an amazing stay. Kudos to Jason at the front desk and all of the staff. Our room was comfortable and very quiet. The room was cleaned daily and the perks for guests including the unlimited filtered water was a bonus. The location was really the best and very walkable to various areas of interest.
- 5/5
My wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Westin St. Francis Hotel. It is conveniently located in an area easily accessible to the city’s attractions. The hotel staff were friendly and knowledgeable. A big thanks to Jeff for providing excellent concierge service!
- 5/5
staff was super friendly!
- 5/5
This is an excellent option if you want to stay in the middle of everything.... convenient location right on union square....the room had an extraordinary view... staff was super nice and friendly... the cafe/restaurant downstairs have the best coffee, burgers and omg... rhe cheese cake..... believe me... you wont be dissapointed.

Perfect stay great customer service
- 5/5
Great location & great price! Staff is wonderful!
- 5/5
It was a great hotel, clean, and felt safe. Staff also very receptive and helpful. Just wish the room was a bit bigger but still a good size for what it was.
- 5/5
This is absolutely the best hotel
- 5/5
Long line at the check in, also, there's got to be a better way to figure out those elevators.

Service staff was extremely friendly amd welcoming

The shower drain clogged and water won’t drain until 30 minutes. Tiny bathroom, shower bar looked dangerous since it touching the light. Room smelled like mildew and room is so noisy. Could hear the horn blaring all night. Room service was excellent though. Pizza was gourmet and cheese stick is top notch.

The room was very spacious & also the bed was very comfortable. We got some great rest.

Me and my family are very thankful to all the staffs who helped us on finding our daughter’s passport. From the moment I called back the hotel to inquire and report a lost item, staffs was so supportive. As I arrived back the hotel to picked up our daughter’s passport the man who helped me was so nice and friendly. To the receptionist who offered water while I’m waiting I thank you so much.

It’s a great hotel if you’re there for shopping but if your looking for more tourists attractions then staying at Fisherman’s Wharf would be more ideal.

Room price was more than reservation price .

We had a great stay here! Very conveniently located. Our only complaint is that the $35/day fee covered a few "amenities" that we couldn't figure out how to use (we even called down to ask how to use the UberEats discount and they couldn't help us!)

The Hotel charged me for the stay although Expedia already charged me. So I was charged 2x' the hotel knew I had paid through Expedia. This is the second time this has happened to mr. I will not recommend Expedia to anyone

Close to everything. The hotel is a little dated and the rooms are musty. Good breakfast.

If this property had a store or gift shop, that would be amazing. The CVS and Walgreens close so early and I had a bad headache and could not find relief. If there was a store to purchase medicines, that would have made this A+ for me. Front desk was helpful at checkin - very polite. Valet and bell service was very good. Rooms were cleaned very well.
- 5/5
The property was beautiful. It is centrally located next to Union Square. The hotel itself is very clean and elegant. The only issue I had was parking. Valet parking was the only option for the hotel and it cost $78 per night.
- 3/5
Restaurant not open yet and construction entrances around union sqaure a bit awkward. There is now this awful $20/day SF CITY charge for all booked nights that is so annoying but with Bonvoy you can get back with food purchase. Prices for cafe and and bar were extremely high like $40 / person for brunch. check out local area diners and avoid bar and food here. Overall a classic place but showing signs of wear given some shoddy renovations and redesigns in the past.

Looking forward to the hotel reopening the front lobby and restaurant soon. Room, especially the Landmark are beautiful with original moulding and classic San Francisco elegance.

Amazing service by staff and beautiful views from the city. I can’t wait to go back.

All staff were amazing and a beautiful hotel.

Historic hotel that was built in 1904. Some beautiful architectural features. However, the hotel needs to be renovated & updated.

Great stay for 3 day getaway. Location is great for shopping, public transportation/car service and tourist attractions. Powell street front entrance is being remodeled but Geary St entrance is a short walk around the corner.

Herman was excellent at the front desk. Everything was great.

Nous avons choisi la chambre Junior avec vue sur la Coit Tower. Grande chambre, grand lit et belle vue. Le bar offrait une belle variété de cocktail avec élégance et professionnalisme.

It was all lovely apart from the buffet breakfast which was nearly cold not very enjoyable for 40$

Night. I was fine with that. When I checked in, there was a difference in price. One day into the trip, the day after checking in, there was another charged to my card, which I had to ask the desk what was this for. They said for incidentals just in case and it would go off my card once I check out. A little irritated but was fine with that. I check out and there’s a different charged to my card from when I checked in and through out my trip.i was upset. There were so many hidden fees within this hotel. I couldn’t believe it. Excuse me. This makes absolutely no sense. To try and charge whatever amount you want to someone’s card without their knowledge. Spoke to a supervisor Ben and he wasn’t any help at all. Was defensive when I was asking about these fees. As much as it was a nice hotel, in a great area, watch out for so many fees, that I have never even heard about being added to your bill and no real explanation being offered to you. I travel alot and this is the first. I go to Vegas often and they don’t have these many fees. The fees they do have will be explained to you when checking in, not surprising you through out your trip. Truly disappointed.

Great staff. Old school setting. Convenient location. Not cheap.

There were three desk clerks available to serve customers with Elite status, and NO clerk for non-elite guests, although there was a line of non-elite guests. So avoid if you are a guest without status, or don’t mine being treated like steerage class in the Titanic.

Good central location for SF. Valet parking definitely increases the cost but it's absolutely the way to go. Wonderful service from all staff I interacted without.

Our daughter's got married at The Presidio this weekend. The whole wedding party stayed at The Westin. We were upgraded to the 26th floor. Check in with Luis. He was so polite! We were a little disappointed with our view of the opposite side of the bay, but we weren't in our room that much. The elevators were so quick, that was amazing. The Bar and Coffee area were so welcoming and awesome. Service was excellent. Valet were friendly.

Love staying at the St. Francis. A true gem. Feels like the SF I grew up with. Sad that the neighborhood is nothing like it was before. Use to be elegant.

Great location! Great hotel!

The hotel is beautiful. A classic. And my room was well laid out, clean, and quiet. I'm not a fan of paid wifi services, especially when they need to be re-started after 24 hours. The Oak Room for breakfast ( I was there early) seemed a little spiritless and sad. I had a much nicer breakfast on my second day at Sears Fine Foods. Otherwise, the hotel is a worthy landmark and offers a great stay.

Great experience
- 5/5
This was my first time staying here and I had a great experience from beginning to end. The staff was extremely helpful and welcoming. The bed was so comfortable. I definitely recommend getting a room with a city view. The elevators are on the outside, and although a tad off putting at first, it ended up being one of my favorite features of the hotel. The lobby was decorated in faux cherry blossoms which added to the elegance of it all. Overall, a 10/10 experience.
