The location The scavenger hunt with getting into the room. I'm too old for a reverse escape room.

I LOVE THIS HOTEL!! It's my second multi-night stay in it. EVERYTHING in the "suggested subjects" was "MAX"! The "Community Room" on the first floor really HAD the feeling of ... well ... "community"....including a delightful number of aspiring young Entrepreneurs from South America - perfect English, of course! Clean; sunny-bright; great full-sized appliances including excellent microwave for charming array of coffee-tea-amendments; filtered water. Mind, I have NO reservations about sharing the commode - 2 on each floor - which NEVER was a problem. Each and every one of us was down-right "TIDY"! It's in ready walking distance ALL the places I wanted to go: BART/MUNI! Asian Art Museum next to extraordinary PUBLIC Library. Symphony Hall! City Hall AND weekend Farmers' Markets (!) in the UNPlaza in front of it. From it, I defined my own adventures starting at the Presidio [a magical PUBLIC PARK we *must PROTECT* from Greedy Developers - read DJT!!!]. Walked ALL OVER San Francisco (OK, so I took the bus to the OCEAN (read "Lands End"). Yes, one Uber - to the specific Memorial Service/celebration as I wasn't sufficiently PUBLIC- transportation"proficient" but I am NOW! Hayes Valley itself has become downright FUN, probably again, given its proximity to So Much!! Enough from me - go see for yourself! Repeat: I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

I like the location of the hotel. The bathroom and shower room being outside is definitely a bit inconvenient and not private. Otherwise, good value given the convenient locations. A bit noisy since there are a few popular restaurant and bar just downstairs. A bit noisy. Bath and WC room outside shared.

Kitchen! Very nice place, everything available Surroundings and the district itself Room looked much better on pics then in reality Strange smell from the place. Felt it everytine entering

The location is perfect for us. The room and building are beautifully maintained old SanFrancisco. Everything was clean and easy to use. Sometime the key didn’t work. However, someone would come in about 10 minutes or less to remedy the situation.
- 4/5
Overall though not bad, and cheap enough that I'd consider staying there again if I could be guaranteed a room away from the street noise again.
- 1/5
I would like to bring the following matters to your attention: Lack of Advertised Amenities: Reliable Wi-Fi was a primary requirement for my booking. Despite being advertised, the Wi-Fi was non-functional for the duration of my five-day stay. Additionally, the OpenKey app failed to work entirely, forcing me to seek manual assistance every time I needed to access my room. The TV failed to work due to no wifi and no cable. Property Maintenance & Damage: There was wet paint in the main lobby and staircases. Consequently, my jacket was stained and ruined. Furthermore, a fire alarm went off at 1:00 AM during the stay, which was incredibly disruptive. Hygiene & Safety: The condition of the shared bathrooms was unsanitary and poorly maintained. More concerningly, I encountered massive bugs inside my guest room, which is completely unacceptable for a hospitality establishment. Given the accumulation of these issues—specifically the breach of advertised services (Wi-Fi/Keyless entry), the damage to my personal property (jacket), and the lack of basic cleanliness—I am requesting a partial refund for my stay. I believe this is a fair resolution considering the significant inconvenience and the cost of replacing my ruined clothing.

Not my normal style but for the money, great! Neighborhood is great. Park. Restaurants. Shops. Bars. Bakery. You can walk to the center of the city. It’s kind of upscale hostel/boarding house.
- 5/5
Easy check-in and checkout, super helpful staff via phone
- 5/5
All great
- 4/5
not bad
- 5/5
The room and facilities were very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was clean and well equipped. It reminded me of a very nice hostel. The only downside is the street noise from cars and partyers on the street. Ear plugs help.
- 4/5
Great value in a super cool neighborhood and a nice room if sharing a bathroom doesn't bother you.
- 5/5
A great location for travertine city. Bare-bones, but not mush else is needed in that location. It’s a clean and comfortable room. The shared amenities don’t pose any issues. Only downside is lugging suitcases up the staircase but it’s easily manageable.
- 4/5
Basic accommodation but clean and in a good area
- 3/5
Customer service was responsive but not accurate. A couple of key conditions were confirmed but never realized.
- 4/5
The communal kitchen is very clean and stocked with the basics for coffee or tea, plus has a refrigerator and microwave, and a nice place to sit.
- 3/5
Was not able to sleep much due to the poor sound isolation (street sounds), and there was a humming diesel generator working the whole night, felt like it was shaking the whole building
- 5/5
Always clean!!!
- 5/5
Peaceful experience
- 4/5
I want to start by saying the custodial staff here is wonderful—truly friendly and helpful. My stay was pleasant in that regard. My main issue was discovering that the bathroom and shower facilities are communal for the whole floor. I would have appreciated this being clearly stated in the hotel's description before I booked, as it was quite an unexpected surprise. While the staff is great, be sure you're comfortable with a shared bathroom setup before you stay here.

- 5/5
it's an old-world hotel (bathroom down the hall) that has somehow preserved some of its charm. I've stayed many times over the years and always found it and the nearby area safe.
- 5/5
Good experience
- 3/5
Kitchen was great and beautiful view from shared dining table. Good central location and value for money. Several stairs so don’t come with a lot of luggage.
- 1/5
Nothing to say about this place
- 3/5
First, read the fine print. The parking structure they suggest is well over a mile from the hotel. I have two replaced hips. I was really pissed about that. And we saw many parking structures much closer to the hotel. Know that you will not have.a toilet in your room, nor will you have a shower. Read the fine print. Otherwise, it was fine. Clean enough.
- 5/5
Dislikes kitchen on 1st floor, I was on 3 floor.

- 4/5
Super happy to see the Hayes Valley area has continued to blossom & thrive into a 'hot destination area'!!! Housekeeping took care of our immediate needs and accomodated us with attentive care regarding check in/out as we do not have a cell phone!
- 4/5
Staff was very nice, helpful. Room was clean.
- 5/5
Good location. Unloading was a tough experience and you’ll have to walk up stairs to get to your room but the rooms are clean as well as the community bath and water closet. The bed was super comfy. I’d definitely recommend it for the price.
- 5/5
The place is super quaint and very cozy and clean. I was pleasantly surprised and would definitely stay here again.
- 4/5
I was a bit nervous about the shared bathroom, but it was a non-issue. Property is old but well maintained and clean. Lots of local options for food and drink. Van Ness Muni (subway) stop was an easy 3 - 4 block walk away. Area around Van Ness was sketchy with homeless... I felt OK but I'm a 6ft male. Area right around property seemed like a nice, inter-city neighborhood. Didn't see any A/C, so might be hot in summer. I'd book here again!
- 4/5
Very well-kept hotel in a convenient Hayes Valley location. Lack of an elevator may be a challenge for older or disabled persons.
- 5/5
Pleasantly surprised. Next time I will stay for a month! I like communal living, so the shared facilities felt good to me. It’s been a long time since I’ve stayed in a guest house, and the noise took some getting used to, but it’s all part of the experience. If you’re afraid of the unhoused population, I don’t know what to tell you. Makes me happy as a bug in a rug to stay in a lovely old well-loved (and secure!) guesthouse. Will stay again.
- 4/5
Small room and shared bathroom, but the location is great, and the price is reasonable for what you get. Definitely way better than staying in the Tenderloin, and not much more expensive.
- 1/5
I called the property around 12:45pm on 9/5 regarding a lost item. They never replied. I texted around 9:30pm and am still awaiting a response. The day before, I contacted the number provided to ask questions; no reply. Very unprofessional.
- 4/5
Only one channel. Toilet clogged, no answer on the phones.
- 3/5
It was okay but confusing to understand how to use the codes at first.
- 5/5
What an absolutely wonderful stay!!! Everything from check in to cleanliness was perfect. Old and charming, clean and communicating, we absolutely adored our time here!
- 4/5
Safe area to stay at! 5 min walk to public transportation from where you easily can get to any part of the city. Room and shared restrooms were clean. Had a room in the third floor so had to go up the stairs each time, no elevator. Windows in the room can not be opened, room had an AC output but air condition was still very stuffy.
- 1/5
No on-site front desk, and remote support takes an hour to reply through text. You’ll get locked out of your room if your phone runs out of battery. Maybe this place was different before COVID, but now it basically feels like a place for the transitory homeless. I left behind the $2 hand soap I had to buy from Safeway, so maybe someone can use that until it runs out.
- 5/5
I really have enjoyed my stay here, it feels like home; I would rewind it in the future.
- 4/5
Very small rooms, but you pay for what you get. Amazing area in Hayes Valley with many things within walking distance. We were two women travelers and felt safe the entire 4 night stay here!
- 3/5
Love the hotel staff. They were able to make my stay important even though the maid service could do a better job with the cleaning, and wish the facilities were accessible to disabled folks who have trouble with stair climbing. Other than that I’ll be willing to stay at this property again.
- 4/5
Smoke and clean hotel for a night

Super convenient. Clean. Cute.
- 3/5
There are many eateries around the facility and the area is safe.

- 5/5
Staying here was a bit unconventional as tar as rooms to stay in. Keys are all through your smart phone. Check in via email exchange. But the stay itself was great. Food is within walking distance. Everything's very close by. Overall, staying here was great. Would highly recommend if on a solo trip.
- 4/5
Clean
- 4/5
Wifi was ok.
- 4/5
Great little place if you’re looking for an affordable option in a safe neighbourhood. I was a solo female and felt perfectly safe in this area. The rooms are cute and clean. Each room has its own sink and mirror. Bathroom and showers are shared which I had no problems with. For a short stay this was perfect!
- 5/5
Great location. Public parking nearby. Excellent customer service. Answered our questions right away. The bed was very firm, but the room and facilities were clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
Excellent clean place located in a very nice neighborhood. Would definitely recommend
- 2/5
Stayed for 3 nights with 4 friends and it is not a bad place for crashing if you’re going to be out and about most of your trip, but the power happened to be out majority of our stay so we could not use light or power to get ready, it’s not equipped for the disabled (didn’t say they were) so I requested a late checkout being that I was on crutches and needed help carrying luggage up and down the stairs being that there is no elevator and we were greeted by banging on the door starting two hours before our original checkout at 11 am and then a very rude housekeeper continuously banging on our door until we vacated by the agreed upon late checkout time.. noon. They then charged my card without asking and without any mention of an automatic late-checkout fee $50 for the late checkout that we agreed upon… that really did it for me. They refunded the fee after I showed proof they did in fact agree to let us leave at 12 over text, not professional.
- 2/5
It feels like this place can use more oversight by management and to review amenities. The expectations for housekeeping service aren’t clear. I stayed 2 weeks and they knocked on my door the day I checked in when I did not need service, and about a week later when I was on a conference call so I asked her to come back the next day. So the sheets were never changed and the trash was never emptied. There is a kitchen in the photos, but no kitchen in the annex where my room was. I think this property also rents to monthly tenants and there was some drama with some sort of tenant or guest asked to leave and the door codes changed without notice. The bluetooth lock on my door stopped functioning and they had to replace the batteries. I would suggest check the battery levels when turning over the room. So I think more management attention and a clearer simce of what is available as far as kitchen and housekeeping
- 4/5
I thought the Hayes Valley Inn was a great budget hotel. The room wasn't fancy and there was a stain on the carpet but it was comfortable. I mention the stain only so other people will have their expectations set. The room was clean, but worn in that type of way. The shared bathroom and shower was very clean. There is no front desk but if you call their number the staff is very responsive and helped me out when I had not received my unlock key and also when I needed to store my luggage after check out. It is centrally located but still set back from Van Ness and Market so not noisy at night. Would definitely stay again if I come back to SF.
- 4/5
This is such an amazing location and a great place to stay within budget! We were super bummed that the kitchen had no stove or even hot pad for cooking (only a microwave). Also, it was quite hot while we were there and the room fan was not adequate to stay cool (even with open windows). So fans in the closets of each room would have been nice. I would definitely recomend this place, though, for anyone wanting to stay and have a smaller room budget!
- 4/5
The bathrooms are shared. Two toilets and one bath/shower per floor. The kitchen is very nice. They no longer provide breakfast but you can store your food in the big refrigerator. The neighbourhood is very lively, crowded with restaurants without outdoor dining. As a result it is very safe. We’ve been coming back to the Hayes Valley Inn for years.it provides a simple and comfortable space in a great part of the city. There are two Bay Wheels bike stations nearby, and convenient connections to the Muni buses. The walk from the Civic Center BART station is pleasant and only takes about 20 minutes, which makes the link to the airport easy.
- 4/5
Great location. Nice old building with vintage vibe. Cute room, although some of the furniture needs repair or deep cleaning. The mattress was lumpy but good enough. Check in and key app were easy and worked well. Tiny bathrooms but serviceable. Have to wait a long time for hot water. Lots of street noise but I slept fine with the earplugs I brought. Overall I really liked the property and feel it was a good value for the cost.
- 4/5
Very nice stay in the heart of Hayes Valley! Loved the location, walkable with plenty of transport & dining options. We stayed in annex building hence the room was quiet but did not have a sink, neither was as spacious as advertised online. Shared kitchen was equipped but a few extra items like clean sponge, dishwashing liquid and a dish cloth would make the stay even more comfortable and homey. 5* for cleanliness & a pleasant stay overall.
- 4/5
Very good area to stay especially for the price. The rooms are a little dated and stained and they get warm. However the location makes up for that. Easily walkable to the painted ladies and restaurants. Also above a dispensary
- 4/5
Nice view from our room
- 2/5
When i checked in i found 2 dead roaches in the ground and my floors were filthy. I did tell management and they cleaned me room again. My room was basically above a bar with loud music all night and homeless who would confront you when you entered or exited the hotel. My room next to me had 2 drugged out guys who monopolize the public bathroom and showers Sorry Hayes, but my stay was aweful
- 4/5
clean and incredibly convenient - - a dozen good restaurants within five-minute walk. shared bathroom was a non-issue - - two teeny rooms with toilets, one teeny room with a bathtub and shower - - all well-maintained and no standing in line. DON'T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR PHONE WITH YOU TO THE BATHROOM BECAUSE THE PHONE ACTS AS YOUR ROOM KEY! noise was also a non-issue. would def stay here again.
- 4/5
Good
- 4/5
One big huge bummer: no hot water. I waited and waited and waited. Finally gave up and sponge-bathed in my room. Also, note that restaurants around the area close their kitchens early. Best to call and make sure the kitchen is still open.
- 5/5
I was pleasantly surprise with this hotel, I was a bit nervous to stay in a hotel with shared bathroom but I also didnt want to spend 400 a night in San Fran, and this hotel was with in my budget. The hotel was super clean, room, bathroom and shower were great, I never ran into any issues with to many people wanting to use them when I needed them. The location is great, walkable and lots of restaurants, I felt very safe in this area. Also was close to the subway for getting around and to/from the airport. For a budget hotel I would recommend 10 out of 10, I did find it noisy one night from the bar below but luckily I had brought earplugs, also the shared kitchen was great if you decide to make food or get take out
- 4/5
Basic hotel. Ole antique furniture for a Victorian made place for rest.
- 5/5
We truly enjoyed our stay. The Inn is centrally located with fantastic shops and restaurants around. It’s a nice walk to Japantown and overnight parking is available at the Opera garage.
- 4/5
I like the victorian charm. The inside is quiet. They will have a heater for the room. Parking wasnt too difficult.
- 4/5
Was quite cold. But homely and a reasonable price. Felt safe in that district.
- 5/5
I didn't like: There was no elevator carrying luggage two floors was exhausting. At least they should have helpers at the gate entrance to carry the luggage we can tip the helpers. Also, it was not rush season when I visited so it was not a hassle for sharing the common 2 WCs and one bath which were on each floor which are outside the room in the corridor.
- 3/5
It was quiet.
- 4/5
Very cozy and warm. In the middle of a nice neighborhood, with restaurants and small businesses close by.
- 4/5
Property location is smack bang in the middle of Hayes Valley and could not be any better. Unfortunately I did see a few mice running around in my room and saw other evidence of their existence in my room, so I would say the property does have a rodent issue. I promptly removed all food from my room once I noticed and did not experience any issues.
- 4/5
The location is great, lots of places close by to eat and excellent location for events. Incredibly easy to get in to our room, we really liked the contactless option and just made sure to have the app downloaded and read the check in email thoroughly prior to check in. The Inn was clean and warm and the shared bathrooms, while not ideal, were clean, easy to use and not a hassle. It is very noisy, it's in a super busy area (central location is a plus and a minus!) so definitely bring some good earplugs to help you sleep at night. Overall we enjoyed our experience here, quick, easy, effortless. The suggested parking was great. We'd definitely stay here again if we had an event nearby to go to.
- 3/5
No staff no restrooms in side you room
- 5/5
COVID changes come to the charming, old-world hotel with bathrooms down the hall. The front door lock is now push button and you'll receive the PIN code by text; it works great. The office has been converted into what appears to be shared space and apparently is no longer staffed. The hotel dog is gone 😥. Rooms have an electronic lock activated by your phone; you'll receive an email explaining how to download the app. Its working fine in my Pixel 6 phone, but don't let your battery die or forget your phone when you shower down the hall. Hayes Valley remains a charming, upbeat neighborhood with shopping and eateries; some of my old favorites have died while new businesses have emerged. I suppose this is the New Normal and the inn and the neighborhood are making the best of it.
- 1/5
Nothing. Terrible place. Never ended up staying in my room. Everything was disgusting!!
- 1/5
We did not even stay …there is no bathroom in your room no elevator we had to walk up 3 flights of stairs with all our luggage!!! Bad choice will never book again
- 2/5
What a disappointment. Check-in was so complicated, I called the number listed but it wasn't until an hour after someone finally answered the phone. They had one of the housekeepers open the door for me, the person on the phone was very rude and needs a refresher on customer service skills. There is no way to control the temperature inside the room, and it was cold inside my entire stay. There is no sink in the bathroom which is outside the hallway, very unsanitary. I did not enjoy my stay at all and will never stay there again
- 1/5
Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Mold in the communal shower. Loud as hell. No AC, no screens in the windows. This is literally third world living in the nicest neighborhood in SF.
- 3/5
Old feels like I got blasted back in time to the 20s to 30s feels vintage awesomeness
- 5/5
All good! Especially for the price!
- 5/5
Note that the bathroom is shared. You don't get your own bathroom like at a normal hotel.
- 3/5
Convenient location. Quiet enough. Really did not like the set up with no staff in the building. No breakfast anymore. Cleanliness has slipped a bit.
- 2/5
No staff on site. Hard to check in and get into my room with their app.
- 1/5
Smoke detector battery chirped throughout the night without end.
- 4/5
The check-in was complicated and I had to call the number provided. The problem was solved very fast. The location is great, I would definitely stay there again if I come back to San Francisco.
- 5/5
El hotel está bien ubicado y limpio
- 5/5
Had a little confusion checking in but that was my fault for not reading the most recent email with the check in instructions lol.. but i called and got help right away so i was able to check in with no problem after that :-) Room was cozy, hotel was in a nice area, not too much noise overnight i was able to sleep just fine and i'm a light sleeper. Only big con is the parking situation but i guess that is all around san francisco with having limited parking. Overall great stay and i would stay again
- 4/5
The location of this property is ideal — there’s lots to do nearby. The property itself is cute and the shared spaces were clean. Our unit was great but, like some other reviewers mentioned, there was no heating unit in the room. Temperature seemed to be centrally controlled. So, bring warm pjs!
- 5/5
Wonderful location, quiet room, good internet, clean, comfortable bed, very easy checkin and checkout on phone. Such a fantastic hotel.
- 5/5
I loved the atmosphere, the teas, the kitchen area, I felt like at home. Bathrooms and shower super clean. Very friendly cleaning maid. Attentive to extra needs. The Inn is located next to crucial cultural activities of San Francisco opera, symphony, jazzhouse etc). I do not mind noise from busy street, reastaurant noise, people laughing, cars hitting the horns...however it may be a problem for someone else.
- 2/5
Very small rooms, No breakfast at all and No one to ask for help! The room colors are ok, but I will Not stay there again!
- 5/5
Had a great stay, very convenient
- 4/5
It was great
- 3/5
I have stayed here many times and have always found it to be very clean. It's more of an European style inn, so you do share a bathroom and tub/shower. There is a large kitchen area, also very clean, so you can prepare light meals if you are so inclined. There are many restaurants in the area.
- 5/5
*
- 4/5
No staff onsite so had to download app to unlock room door. Email was sent with code to get into the inn main door. There is outdoor restaurant seating hiding the awning for the inn, so it’s barely visible. No drop off parking to get your luggage up to room. We found street parking close to unload. We were there on a Saturday night so parking in the nearest garage was a nightmare. It took us an hour to finally park several blocks away for $29. Bring your proof of vaccinations or you can’t dine inside. It was so crowded by inn, finding food was almost impossible. Room had no a/c so it was hot. Good luck opening the 100 year old windows. Then close them again to sleep as it is loud on street side.
- 4/5
The bathroom is really small as is the television.
