Reviews
The Grove Inn is a charming, boutique hotel in a great location in San Francisco. Guests frequently praise the cleanliness, comfort, and convenience of the hotel, as well as the friendly and helpful staff. However, some guests have noted issues with noise, parking, and the lack of certain amenities.
- Great location in San Francisco
- Clean and comfortable rooms
- Noise from bus line and other guests
- Parking can be a challenge
- 3/5
The location was nice - quiet but still close to food and sights. The room itself was quite basic. Comfortable but small; nothing to write home about. No elevator (but they did have a luggage elevator). The staff was friendly and welcoming.
- 5/5
Amazing stay for our wedding anniversary. Such a lovely Inn. Highly recommend!
- 5/5
Comfortable stay. Parking was tricky but after a few loops we found something.
- 5/5
Great staff, convenient location, quiet and peaceful stay.
- 5/5
The Grove Inn was great for a quick trip into San Francisco. Close enough to the area. Be mindful it is San Francisco and the streets are definitely full of hilss. If you can walk, everything is close enough. If you can't, Ubers are always available. The hotel itself was clean and secure with the charm of the Victorian Homes that are known for the area. Will definitely return to stay again. Thank you Azizza!
- 4.5/5
Quaint, clean, well-located, friendly and helpful staff. Because it’s an older property, anytime someone walked up or down the stairs, it was quite noisy! It’s even more noisy when they are pulling suitcases down the stairs early in the morning! ?
- 4/5
They have coffee and tea. Small frig. Great shower pressure. Comfy bed.
- 5/5
The bed was one of the most comfortable we have ever slept on nothing
- 5/5
Adorable room with bay window and wonderful view. Nice amenities and contactless check in. Walking distance to all I needed. Quiet and charming. It was great
- 4/5
Location, character, cleanliness and staff were friendly & kind. It was all pretty great for what we were looking for.
- 4/5
Interesting hotel. Clean and efficient. Decent location. Room was right on the street, but the noise wasn’t too bad during the night. Would likely come back and stay again for the value.
- 5/5
My daughter and I recently stayed at the Grove Inn and found it very nice. There was consistent communication from the staff prior to check in (regarding access, parking, etc). The building is so cute, and very well maintained. The room was spotless. We also loved the convenient locations (we walked to Alamo Square to see the view, then walked to a nearby sushi restaurant and Salt and Straw). We would definitely stay again!
- 5/5
Clean room. Nice area
- 5/5
The building and rooms were interesting and the neighborhood was cozy and residential which made me feel like I was living in the area and not just a business traveler. It was close enough to downtown via the bus and ride shares.
- 4.5/5
We love the location, the staff and the shower. We would stay there again for sure. The room was a little warm and there was no thermostat in the room.
- 3.5/5
The property is more like a B&B than a hotel. Its location is central to many things. Entrance is easy with the key fob. It's nice to have coffee in the lobby at all times. The room is odd, not really set up for suitcases. The bed was comfortable although the pillows were flat. The bathroom was weak. There is literally no place to put your toiletries, particularly for two people. The noise level is high for a hotel.
- 4.5/5
You can hear other guests quite often. Ear plugs were provided.
- 3/5
It felt like a boarding house. No common area to sit on a couch and relax. Our window opened onto an air shaft and no view. Neighborhood parking is nonexistent so only stay if using Uber. The bed and bath were clean. However I would not stay there again.
- 4.5/5
An affordable place to stay near Alamo Square, yet located in a quiet neighborhood. The room was comfortable and clean, although a bit on the smaller side. It feels more like a guesthouse than a traditional hotel, which worked perfectly for us. I especially loved the thoughtful touch of chocolates and biscuits left in the room each day during housekeeping. We would definitely stay there again. Reception hours are quite limited
- 3/5
Very nice location. Lots of stuff nearby. A little concerned about a lack of reaction to a security issue
- 3.5/5
The location of the Grove Inn was wonderful. We rented three rooms for our family and had a wonderful time exploring the area. The staff was not very welcoming and when asking for a simple request for water to fill the tea kettle in the main shared area I got an eye roll and she seemed put out. We had a dead bird on our window sill and told the staff and the just brushed it onto the sidewalk instead of disposing of it. We also only had one bath towel in our room and had to wait until the next day to get towels to shower. The heat was blaring in the middle of the night and our room became extremely hot I attempted to turn down the heat with the thermostat in the hall, but it was locked and could not turn the heat off. I had to wait until 9 AM until the staff came in to tell her about the issue and was greeted with a shake of the head. Overall, the location was good, but the staff was extremely unwelcoming.
- 4.5/5
Great location, beautiful house, lovingly furnished, elegant and comfortable, transport good (if you have a muni card), helpful staff, fridge, kettle, coffee maker (v good coffee!), windows one can open, air con, nice shower No staff after 5pm, also the lounge is shut after 5pm
- 4.5/5
A little noisy
- 5/5
Clean, well kept, historic, and a great location. Walking distance to most must sees.
- 5/5
Cute boutique style lodge. Rooms were nice, great area, and easy to check in and out. Provided list of local restaurants and amenities around the area.
- 4.5/5
We love the location and the Inn is clean, friendly Unfortunately in the am, noisy occupant in the room next to our bed. She talked on the phone for probably an hour and we could hear almost word for word.
- 5/5
I especially appreciated that it’s a small hotel with only a few rooms, located in a quiet residential neighborhood. The area felt safe, walkable, and very pleasant. I only wish I had been able to stay longer, but I will absolutely be booking again in the future.
- 5/5
We had a deluxe king room. The room was small and basic, but sparkly clean and had a very comfortable bed. We really liked the location. It was very central to everything we wanted to do.
- 3/5
The room was beautiful, clean, and very comfortable. Overall, the stay felt very pleasant, and the location was excellent. The sound insulation was not very good. It was easy to hear footsteps from the room above and people using the stairs outside, which affected my sleep.
- 4/5
Key system was convenient Noise traveled through the ceiling. Didn’t like heating up water in a plastic pot. Pbas, etc
- 3/5
That said, the overall feel was more simple than elegant, and there was a noticeable room odor that detracted from the experience. While it was perfectly fine for a short stay, it didn’t quite match the ‘boutique’ feel suggested in some reviews. Overall, a decent option if comfort and location are your priorities.
- 4/5
location no parking there, nearest parking 5 blocks away.
- 2.5/5
I like that you had plenty of space for clothes irons. You should get them. There was no clothes iron nor ironing board in my room. They are relatively inexpensive and you could easily get them for each room. I had a conference where I was presenting to high net worth individuals so I need to look professional. I was unable to do so because the facilities locked them. Otherwise wonderful hotel
- 4/5
The spot/location was perfect. The building was iconic. The room was spacious and clean. It is simple and quaint.
- 5/5
Clean cozy room in a quiet area. Comfy bed
- 5/5
I had a great stay! Was a solo female traveler on business, and the hotel felt very safe to stay in. It’s right next to the 22 bus which takes you all across the city. Room was clean and cozy, and appreciated all the amenities! Walls are a bit thin, but nothing new especially having lived in apartment buildings.
- 4.5/5
Location was great, staff very nice. The room was very clean, good restaurants nearby. The only complaint was lighting needs to be better by theirror for make up application See above
- 4/5
Room was small but we cute
- 5/5
Walked to a local coffee shop.
- 5/5
I will stay at the Grove Inn every time I'm in SF
- 5/5
Great front desk support!
- 5/5
Overall The Grove was a great stay. The staff is friendly, rooms are clean/comfortable & their check in/check out is simple. I appreciate that they offer luggage drop off & they also had our room ready a hour sooner than check in. Street parking is difficult to find but I was able to get a spot after doing some loops. I would stay here for my next visit.
- 5/5
The only thing that isn't easy is parking. The streets are all 2 hour parkiing or permit required. The recommended garage is aboiut 5 blocks away. It was safe and easy to park at but not super convenient.
- 5/5
Parking is a challenge, but the location, room, and staff were excellent.
- 5/5
Great neighborhood. Very up to date accommodations. Very helpful check in staff.
- 2/5
Just ok. Lots of noise from the bus stop upfront, small rooms, no fan in the bathroom and if you open the bathroom window you’re looking into someone’s living room next door.
- 4/5
Everything was prefect for me. Quiet, clean, simple. Neighborhood was nice, Check-in was easy, staff was kind.
- 5/5
Wonderful experience. Wonderful room and staff. Clean and well appointed. One of the best locations in The City, only a block to Alamo Square and the Painted Ladies. Easy walk to Hayes Valley, and the Castro. And access to the 22,5,6,7 busses. Great place to be and awesome place to stay.
- 5/5
Friendliness.
- 5/5
Staff greeted us immediately and was very helpful in getting us settled in to the room. Room was very clean and comfortable with a mini fridge and coffee maker. The lobby area is a shared space which can be utilized from 9am to 5pm. Much more intimate than a sterile hotel in mid-city. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
The hotel was very clean and nice. The room was perfect for us. The hotel was in a nice area of town that felt safe to walk around in. Would definitely stay again!
- 5/5
Great
- 2/5
Old and worn property. very loud street. Drab and depressing with dirty windows, contributing to dingy atmosphere. Lobby is furnished like a bus station - burned out light bulbs in lights in entry way. Just a bad experience..Couldn’t wait to check out.
- 4/5
Safe, convenient location
- 4/5
The queen size bed is small for us; they don't have King size, people were nice, the hotel had a smell when you first arrive and also the sofas in the room, other than that was very good.
- 5/5
Super friendly and helpful staff. Great location. Nice and clean accommodations.
- 5/5
Very nice property in a great location. Short walk to the painted laidies, restaurants and shops on Divisedero. Bus stop right there to take directly to the Fillmore, Castro, lower Haight, or the Mission.
- 3/5
We had a great time staying at the Grove! The area was phenomenal with a lot of great walking areas, neighborhoods, restaurants, and bars. The only thing that was inconvenient was that our water pressure in the shower was nonexistent. It was at a very slow drip, which made it hard to use.
- 3/5
Clean, comfortable, newly remodeled room. Reasonably friendly staff. The only inconvenience was the low water pressure in the shower.
- 3/5
Lobby smells like cat pee.
- 4/5
The property is in a quiet neighborhood and the staff are very responsive and proactive bin terms of communication. The property is an old, beautiful home, but the room was updated and modern in terms of comfort and convenience. Nice bed and nice linens made everything very comfortable.
- 4/5
Great spot. Close by other areas, walkable, cute and felt safe. Staff was kind and helpful.
- 4/5
The location is very good. Very quiet and nice neighborhood, one block from Alamo Square
- 5/5
We loved this location, walking distance from the Painted Ladies, Alamo Square park, and restaurants. We had no problem finding street parking within 1 block of the property. The place was like staying in a private residence, very cozy and clean. We will go back.
- 5/5
Amazing stay! This is the exact kind of place you want for a weekend getaway. Walkable neighborhood, on the bus line, comfortable bed, nice bathroom. Corner stores for snacks & beverages. And the HELD our bags, even after check out on a rainy day- so we could run across town and get to an event. Very kind & convenient.
- 5/5
Nice and quiet neighborhood hotel
- 5/5
We loved our overnight stay here and will be back again in the future.
- 5/5
It was a very nice and walkable area.
- 5/5
Such an easy check in process, great communication with staff. The property was so cute and well kept.
- 5/5
Comfortable room and bed in a great location. The parking garage is a reasonable 10 minute walk away, about a half mile. Eddy's Cafe is a great restaurant nearby, and there's a lovely park at the end of Grove St with the famous Painted Ladies. The area was quiet and felt very safe.
- 5/5
.
- 4/5
Great stay! Very walkable area and close to lots of fun things :)
- 4/5
This is a reasonably priced hotel that's in a prime location for those interested in checking out the Painted Lines or looking for a place to stay after checking out a concert at the nearby Independent, as I was when I stayed there
- 5/5
Great location. One block from the painted ladies. Quiet area between Alamo square/divisadero and Hayes valley
- 4/5
No parking, limited office hours
- 4/5
Great location. I do miss the fact that they NO longer offer breakfast; it was convenient.
- 4/5
This hotel is a heritage property which makes it an interesting place to stay, and it's in a really nice area (very close to painted ladies!). It nice becuase the suburb does not feel touristy. The room was nice and comfy. There's no elevator and the luggage needs go up a separate machine, which needs to be done by the hotel receptionist. In terms of extra amenities, the hotel does not really have any (except some free tea in the tiny front foyer). The front receptionist seemed angry and was rude because we checked out 20 minutes late.
- 5/5
Staff very nice
- 5/5
Excellent location, amazing value, surprisingly quiet and very clean. Only place I want to stay in San Francisco.
- 5/5
Beautiful and perfect location! Very nice staff. A new find!
- 4/5
There is a McDonalds and Trader Joe’s in walking distance. Street parking was available (but observe the signs for street cleaning). Public transportation passes by in close proximity but did not bother me. Cute Victorian houses.
- 5/5
Very quaint property with very personal contact info and desk - would stay again for sure; room small but comfortable and shower fantastic… very walkable to restaurants and the Gilmore
- 2/5
Otherwise staff was nice, location was very good and in a safe neghborhood. Check-in was really easy. Room was clean as advertised. Wish we could have been able to sleep.
- 5/5
So glad we chose to stay at the Grove. It’s in a pretty, safe neighborhood, walkable to great restaurants and shops. Check in was quick and easy, and the room was small (to be expected in this part of town) but comfortable and clean.
- 5/5
Great area the Fillmore District. Close to iconic parks and architecture. Great stay with good amenities.
- 5/5
Will absolutely be visiting again soon!
- 5/5
nice staff
- 5/5
Great price, very clean and quiet room, super easy check-in.9

- 5/5
Small but cozy place to feel San Francisco stay. Historical small building but it’s well maintained and clean!
- 5/5
Great place! Would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Amazing place to stay. Great for folks with a car and can utilize street parking (free). The service was amazing. When we come back to SF, we will be staying here.
- 5/5
The area is great and the hotel was comfortable and a good value.
- 5/5
Near bus stop
- 5/5
Lovely, cozy accommodations in a sweet, colorful area, the Alamo Square Historic District.
- 5/5
Loved my stay here! The neighborhood is beautiful, the street is quiet, the rooms are super clean, and the front desk is friendly. What more could you ask for for a weekend in SF??
- 5/5
We loved the location and the relaxed atmosphere around The Grove Inn. Haight street had great breakfast options and was convenient.
- 5/5
As far as accommodation, clean, modern fit out & Mark on the front desk was very helpful. Would stay again.
- 5/5
Excellent hotel! I love Hayes Valley and it’s a short walk to great restaurants and shops and the famous view from Alamo Square. Parking was not too bad and the staff were very helpful and gracious. Very good price and as a solo female traveler, I felt safe and had a good time. I will be back!
- 5/5
Wonderful. Hotel checked on us in advance. When we arrived, greeted warmly. Nice room, comfortable. We like the location, felt safe.
- 5/5
I would definitely recommend the Grove Inn! It was clean, quiet, and quaint. The bed was so comfortable. It’s also in a great location—one (hilly) block from Alamo Square, about a ten minute walk to lots of restaurants and shops on Divisadero, and there’s a bus stop directly outside. It’s also an easy walk to the Mission district and more great restaurants and shops on Hayes. You should stay here!
- 5/5
I was a little surprised that the front desk was only open from 9 AM to 5 PM; however, it worked out just fine. The staff was good but we were out everyday, so really didn't see them much. There aren't any services the Inn offers (e.g., restraunt) which was just fine for us. If your looking for a comfortable place to stay while visiting the sites or family in the area, this place is great.
- 5/5
Lovely little hotel in a great location! Very much enjoyed the staff & my stay there. Loved the luggage elevator! Sasha was very hospitable and so knowledgeable!
- 5/5
Clean quiet and walkable.
- 4/5
No air conditioning! There is only a standing fan and windows to open for a breeze. The expedia listing is misleading when it says air conditioning. I did feel some air coming out of a floor vent during the day once, but it seems like they turn it off when they close the front desk at 9pm. Guests have no control over it.
- 5/5
Fantastic property in a wonderful location. You can choose to walk or ride the transportation in the area. Staff were excellent! The beds are extremely comfortable and we slept soundly each night.
- 5/5
Great property. Repeat guests.
- 5/5
Excellent Victorian style Inn that is well kept up and very pleasant. There could have been a mirror in the room but otherwise, we lacked for nothing. The beds were superior comfort.
- 5/5
Excellent
- 5/5
I was in town for a conference and chose a hotel near the venue. Though not a traditional hotel, I loved the historic feel of the Grove. Although a bit small, it had character, inside and out. I also loved the location, as it was walkable to the nearby park and to shops and entertainment.
- 5/5
Loved this quaint spot. Perfect location and friendly staff! Will definitely stay again.
- 5/5
This is a nice little property with very helpful staff. The room was cozy and quiet given that we were in a city.
- 5/5
Friendly greeting, clean room, excellent location for exploring the Hayes Valley neighborhood and other surrounding areas, all of which were remarkably clean and vibrant. Convenient to public transportation, parks
- 4/5
The property is charming, well maintained, and conveniently located. My only complaint is the walls are paper thin and I could hear every conversation in the next room.
- 5/5
Lovely, cozy place to stsy, short walk to restsurants on Hayes, easy transport.
- 5/5
great place!
- 5/5
My favourite place to stay in SF
- 5/5
Solid Inn. Good location. Swift and easy. Worth the money. Felt like we were in good hands.
- 4/5
It was super cute. I just stress out when there is no one at the front desk 24/7. I appreciated the cameras surrounding the property and the room was really nice. The bed was comfortable as well.
- 4/5
Good,Place
- 4/5
great property in an good area, nice cafes and easy access transport
- 4/5
Great location. Walkable to several dining and shops. No on property parking. Friendly staff.
- 5/5
Clean and neat boutique hotel. Perfect for our short couple getaway.
- 5/5
Really enjoyed my stay. Lovely hotel, vintage but clean and modern. Very comfortable, modern room, well-appointed. Great location near the Painted Ladies park. Would be happy to stay here again.
- 5/5
I'm certainly going back!
- 4/5
This property is in the perfect location in regards to where my daughter lives in San Francisco. I never saw anyone who worked there but the check-in was electronic and they made it easy to check-in and go straight to your room. No elevator so you do have to take your luggage upstairs yourself. It was clean and very cute also. We will stay there again.
- 5/5
Comfortable and convenient with charm.
- 5/5
Great check in, room was ready when we checked in and as expected
- 5/5
Wonderful experience! The rooms were so nice and the neighbor is nice and quiet. I’ve stayed in a. Lot of areas of San Francisco and this was by far my favorite!
- 4/5
The only other concern I had was the noise from the bus line right next to the building and under my window. Turns out the bus ran less often at night. The owners also provide a number of noise muffling gadgets to help out and they work pretty well. The bed was quite comfortable, the room was sparkling clean. If you’re strong enough to manage your luggage, it’s worth giving it a try.
- 5/5
Small hotel, friendly staff and easy to walk to great restaurants and parks. Don’t recommend brining a car, parking can be a challenge.
- 4/5
The wash sink drains very very slow. If your room is on the first floor, you can hear people walking upstairs.
- 5/5
Nice rooms in the neighborhood. Walk to SF Jazz and many restaurants. All manner of shops and it’s near the performing arts. I would return.
- 5/5
Stayed here for one night as my wife and I were in town for a concert at the Fillmore. Comfortable rooms, super nice staff, and great location. Loved walking to the Fillmore and back and eating at great restaurants close by. Will definitely stay here again!!
- 4/5
Staff was very friendly. Rooms were fine considering the price, but being in an old house meant no AC, and then windows didn’t open fully. As a result, the room was too warm at night.
- 4/5
This Inn was really lovely. Room was very clean, quiet and the staff were very pleasant. I was worried about parking, but I found a spot right around the corner. Will return!
- 5/5
It is an excellent location, a block from the beautiful Alamo Square Park. The accommodations are clean and very comfortable.
- 5/5
Easy check in, plenty of street parking and great location with a view of Alamo square park from the front of the hotel. Both the ladies who were working at the front desk were exceptionally helpful and welcoming. Will definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Comfortably, homely hotel. All staff were friendly and accommodating. Nice position, between SF city centre and Haight-Ashbyry area. Recommend! 👌
- 5/5
It's was more like a house than a hotel. Beautiful neighborhood.
- 5/5
In a fantastic location! Makes you feel a part of the local neighborhood. Bus right outside that runs to the Golden Gate Bridge or to the subway. 4 blocks away is a slew of delicious restaurants, bars, and shops. The front desk was helpful and had great suggestions for places to eat and check out. To top it all the mattress was extremely comfortable. Would stay here again for sure.
- 5/5
This was a perfect place to stay to go to the San Francisco opera. Easy walking distance, lovely neighborhood. Comfortable, quiet room with nice touches like treats to accompany coffee, en electric kettle, and a white noise machine.
- 5/5
Great stay, cute little hotel looked in a great area.
- 5/5
Nice staff, clean, quiet and safe.
- 5/5
The hotel was so quaint, quiet, was walkable to the painted ladies and so many amazing restaurants. Would absolutely stay here again!
- 5/5
Staff was great
- 4/5
The hotel is in a residential area so nice and quiet and safe. If you have been to San Francisco before and know your way around, this is a great hotel to stay in. If a first timer, it’s a little bit out of the way from bars. Very clean hotel with nice little touches, like a coffee machine, but lacks some essentials such as a safe. Really friendly staff with great communication if checkin after 5pm and have great knowledge in the hotel around the area
- 5/5
Very clean and quiet. Convenient check-in/check-out options.
- 5/5
I've stayed here a couple times now and I really enjoy it. Very clean, comfy and fairly quiet! Very friendly, easy to work with staff. Will def stay again when in SF.
- 5/5
We really enjoyed our stay at The Grove Inn. The location was perfect, right in the middle of San Francisco and there is public transit right in front of the door. A room was very spacious and clean, considering how expensive it can be to stay in San Francisco this was a great value for the price
- 4/5
Everything was great except the parking was a challenge.
- 2/5
The "automated" after hours checkin process was not smooth and the staff was not immediately responsive
