Reviews
Guests generally appreciate the friendly and helpful staff, as well as the cleanliness of the rooms. However, the lack of air conditioning, small room sizes, and the location in a questionable neighborhood are frequently mentioned concerns.

Didn’t have breakfast. Very old hotel. Elevator very dirty. Bathroom small

Cleaning staff are wonderful however and the bedding was clean and well kept. Important to note that the Hotel is also in a terrible location. Candidly, not an area any tourists should be walking solo, or after hours. I wouldn’t stay again.
- 4/5
Enjoyed the 8th floor room! Rooms and bathrooms were much bigger. Appreciated the location and price of the hotel. The French bakery was closed which was a huge bummer but my son a I enjoyed the mariachi restaurant dinner and breakfast.

Great location. Building is bit old and the lift broke down during my stay and I had to carry my luggage down the stairs. The sound proofing is also rather poor and I can hear people talking in the other rooms and luggage being dragged along the walkway outside my room. The room rate is much cheaper than other hotels in the same location, so it is still value for money overall.

Nothing The hotel is located in a neighborhood full of crime. There were homeless people and drug addicts lying on the sidewalks. The hotel itself is old and run-down. The most traumatic part was that as soon as I entered my room, I heard gunshots outside. I ended up sleeping with a chair pushed against the door, and I placed a hanger from the closet through the door handle because I was afraid someone might enter my room while I was asleep, especially since you did not provide a proper interior locking mechanism for the room. I felt unsafe throughout my stay, and this is not the level of security, comfort, or accommodation that I expected when booking this hotel.
- 3/5
Older building, I understand no amenities but well worn carpeting and couches look dirty. The most creepy thing is the humidity sensors in showers if there were other rooms available in city, I would have moved. The light on my fan just turned on intermittently, 4 ‘0clock in morning. The walls are thin I heard housekeeping at 5 am talking through the walls might have been my location. It’s not ideal, especially with the A/c unit. Have to keep shutters open for good ventilation.

The room was clean and the staff was great

The bathroom in our room did not have an exhaust fan or had a malfunctioning one. When we asked for either a replacement room or to send someone over, we were told the problem would be taken care of. However, no one showed up ever and we (three people) had to use the bathroom as is for 3 days. We also wanted to book a meeting room for a couple hours and despite this facility listed on their site, neither the staff or the management (who we mailed multiple times) would help us with this. Overall, we were excited when we got here but left deeply disappointed. I would not recommend this place, even though the location is ideal. I appreciate the staff but the property just isn't it.

Location close to union square. Bathroom small but clean. Poorly maintained property. Dingy, dirty, poorly maintained. Fitness center had peloton but they didn't even bother replacing the clip on pedals with standard pedals to bike with sneakers. This is one of many examples of things that are overlooked or not maintained.

I would waste my time if I wrote anything more about this place. Stay away all the way.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The location is great. My room had a locked door to another room which was not soundproof at all. I had a rough sleep because of my neighbors who chatted and watched action movies next door.

Okay for the price point. Wifi didn’t work in room, but was fine in lobby. Overhead lights were controlled by a remote and turned off and on randomly, maybe due to the remotes in other rooms. Super annoying in the middle of the night. Room was clean and staff was helpful, great bar and cafe. Fine if you’re on a budget but wouldn’t stay here again

I wasnt even able to stay at the hotel due to my room being booked by another individual. I booked online through booking.com and when i had arrived to check in i was told all rooms where booked and they didnt have one for me. I booked a room for two specifically with two beds. They had moved me to another hotel down the block call Cornell Hotel de France. When i had arrived to Cornell the guys said they only had one room with one bed and was told by the employee at Tilden Hotel that was fine when that wasn’t discussed with me. I was very upset that i was downgraded my room and didnt get to stay at the hotel i booked for. At Cornell Hotel the elevator was out of service and had to use the stairs which they were very steep and narrow I will not be returning to either hotel.

Front desk clerk went on a break right before 3pm, which delay the check in. Elevator stinks. Room was horrible and stinks. Bed was uncomfortable. Found moth in our room. Bathroom was ok but no exhaust fan. Exposed conduit and wire. Hotel website said room comes with a fridge, but it only had a wine cooler, which doesn't even work. Portable old school heater. Room carpet has stains. Elevator was broken for about more than half a time of our stay. Only good thing about this hotel was a friendly staff, other than that hotel layout, rooms, bathroom, carpet is old and tacky.
- 5/5
This property is clean, comfortable, and conveniently located. Staff are friendly and helpful. I also liked that stairs are a carpeted option to the elevator, rather than just an emergency exit stairwell.
- 3/5
The place just needs some refurbishment. Homeless outside of the front entrance set the tone. Staff was good though, super nice and helpful.
- 2/5
Room didn't have blinds. Very noisy. Will not come back.
- 2/5
Room was dark and not that clean. It was fine.
- 5/5
The staff at the Tilden Hotel are incredibly friendly and welcoming, and they do an amazing job maintaining the property. The rooms and lobby are kept exceptionally clean and feel like a safe, comfortable haven. The bathroom is on the smaller side, but having your own private space is still much better than certain alternative hotels in this immediate area that rely on shared bathrooms. There was a bit of noise at night—possibly coming from the bar—but it stopped a bit past midnight. It is important for travelers to know that the hotel is located in an intense urban neighborhood with a highly visible unhoused population right outside. While the street dynamics can be challenging, the hotel team works incredibly hard to ensure your stay inside is pleasant and well-kept. If you are comfortable navigating a gritty city environment, the excellent service, private amenities, and cleanliness here make it a great value.
- 3/5
The room was clean and staff is nice. Just an old building the needs some proper TLC. Price was great, the issues were the plywood in the window was kind of ghetto, but not a big deal. The shower fixture was cracked and spraying water out of the sides and well as the shower head which left little to no water pressure. Also, there wasn’t any soap. I asked for hand soap, but they absolutely had hand sanitizer in there. Additionally, the same goes for the shower gel. Bring your own toiletries.
- 2/5
The staff were great! The hotel room were checked into had large dust bunnies on the fan. The light and fan would turn itself on in the middle of the night. The sink wouldn’t drain. We had to change rooms in the middle of the night due to noise and were transferred to a room that was advertised to us upon booking. The coffee in the patisserie shop and Mexican restaurant was excellent. I wouldn’t advise staying there.

It was a cute room and amazing for the price. Easy to check in

The bed was good, its an old hotel, bit noisy, small bathroom but reasonably priced.

Not worth the money. Should pay me to stay here.
- 5/5
Everything was great
- 5/5
I had a great experience during my stay. The hotel was very clean, well-maintained, and the rooms were comfortable. The staff were consistently friendly, welcoming, and went out of their way to be helpful, which made the stay even more enjoyable. The coffee shop in the lobby had some of the best coffee, which was a great bonus. Overall, a really pleasant experience and I would definitely stay here again.
- 4/5
The room was cold
- 5/5
I can’t express my sincere gratitude for the service my cousin and I received. The Tilden is a quaint Boutique hotel is convenient to practically everything
- 3/5
Staff was friendly but the checkin was awkward for late night. As they have a self checkin that did not work very well, as it caused some billing issues in their software and confused the receptionist. The cart to carry your bags upstairs was too big for the elevator. The walls are very thin. Can hear people arguing and fussing about. Tub was nice, but the drainage didn’t allow for a deep soak. Products were nice. The food was decent for room service. Wish they had a bigger fridge with shelves in it and perhaps a mini freezer too. Other than this it was a pleasant stay.

Area fine by day very sketchy at night near Tenderloin district. Problem with inexperienced front desk at check out trying to store 3 pieces of luggage, large shopping bag, was told managers office was " locked", he tried to call manager 3-4x, took over 30min arguing with front desk employee that storing luggage is standard service in most hotels I have ever been to in 40 countries, he told me theres only front desk area but if he goes to bathroom there are " cameras" but theft cant be prevented! I was told to take my heavy luggage with me or just leave them for "20min"! Finally manager arrived and was able to store my items. This shouldn't have taken 40min to resolve and causes me to be very late on my vacation last day.

Room is nothing like pictured horrible area and they had sanitizer in the bodywash dispenser never again …
- 1/5
Front guest receptionist guy on Sunday and Monday morning and he’s rude and very bad attitude
- 4/5
Overall it wasn't THAT bad for a quick low cost option. However, it wasn't as close to Union Square as I thought and def some scary folks hanging out side at night in the area (but thats more of an SF thing now a days). Staff was friendly and room itself was clean. hallways and walls looked dated but again, this is what I paid for.

Love
- 4/5
Not the cleanest but safe, affordable nothing that really made me go ew! But stains on everything lol. Hit room I turned on the little swamp cooler and it was fine.probably the best bang for your buck, I will definitely come back when I am traveling solo again
- 4/5
The room was clean with good air conditioning. The bathroom fixtures are older and maintained, but it is a historical hotel and they have maintained everything the best they can.
- 3/5
Some of the staff are terrible, while others are amazing. I would stay there again, but I would ask for a lower floor so I can walk down the stairs rather than wait for the lift. The coffee shop at the front is worth a look in; they make good-quality coffee and have very nice French pastries. The guys who run it are French. In my room, 206, the light and fan would randomly come on during the day or night, so at 2 am, when I had a bright light in my face, it wasn't so nice. Maybe avoid that room.
- 5/5
Charmer of a front desk clerk, the room was very comfortable and I got my deposit back very quickly. Would stay again for sure.
- 3/5
I guess you get what you pay for.
- 5/5
Everything was awesome and amazing
- 4/5
Small room but all I needed was a bed.
- 1/5
It took forever to get checked in the room was not the greatest sadly, I would not stay here again
- 3/5
The Tilden is a good place to stay, nice rooms and good location. The only problem is that they had loud music playing one night, from 10 pm until after 2 am and again the next morning. Not sure why, but it made what was an otherwise pleasant stay quite the opposite.
- 1/5
This is a very cheap place to stay and its quality is absolutely reflected in the price. It is in the heart of the tenderloin so expect open air drug use and human excrement on the front steps. Fine if you’re an adult but no place for kids. The walls are paper thin so expect to hear EVERYTHING going on in the rooms around you at all hours of the day. There is no climate control in the room so be ready to be hot at night. Rooms are clean enough. Photos are prettt missleading and everything is deffinately older than you might think from looking at the pics. What you pay is what you get with this one.
- 5/5
This was perfect for us since we just needed sleeping accommodation and well priced
- 5/5
We stayed at the Tilden Hotel while waiting to move into our new apartment, and the experience absolutely deserves five stars. The front desk clerk who checked us in was incredibly kind and welcoming—she truly provided exceptional customer service and made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. Our king room was extremely comfortable, clean, and exactly what we needed during this transitional time. After a long and stressful moving process, it was such a relief to stay somewhere that felt relaxing and well-run. Thank you to the staff at the Tilden Hotel for making our stay so pleasant. We truly appreciated the hospitality!

Very cleanl establishment.
- 5/5
Great hotel. Great staff and very friendly. The bar/restaurant is perfect downstairs.
- 3/5
I will say that the outside needed some attention. Trash and side walk in front of yhe property needed to be cleaned.
- 1/5
This hotel is the worst hotel. Do not ever stay here
- 4/5
The room was generally clean, though there were a few stains on the carpet that could use some attention. The bed was very comfortable, the sheets were clean, and the towels were soft. The chairs in the room felt a bit worn and could probably be upgraded. The gym was solid for its size. I was pleasantly surprised to see a commercial-grade bike and rowing machine, which was a nice bonus. The only real downside was that the WiFi in the room was out during my stay. The internet was working in the lobby, so I was able to work there, but otherwise had to rely on phone data. That said, the staff were great, the hotel was quiet, and the bed made for a really comfortable sleep. Having a restaurant and café attached was also super convenient perfect for late-night food and an easy coffee and pastry in the morning. Would definitely consider staying again.
- 3/5
The stairs are uneven so it was a scary climb to the higher floors. The 1 elevator is very small as well as the fitness room. However the staff was very nice.
- 1/5
Check in was terrible , took a long time to check in , card keys didn’t work . I had to ask front desk to let me into my room every time I needed access to my room.
- 4/5
The room was dated, but clean. The staff is very helpful.
- 3/5
First 2 room assignments had not been cleaned
- 4/5
The staff was great! Restaurant was very good; the room was ok
- 5/5
We went during New Year’s Eve so check in and parking was quite busy. Couldn’t find a spot in the loading for valet. But the overall stay was affordable, clean, and very nice. The hotel is super cute and looks like the photos.
- 4/5
Great location in the city. Clean new rooms. Hotel and room is great. Just many unhoused people in the area
- 5/5
One small lift for the entire hotel building. Pray it does not break during your stay :)
- 5/5
Great check in
- 5/5
The staffing was great, vintage old look inside. They did had Valet but will suggest not to leave anything in the car due to homeless all around SF.
- 4/5
Great experience with very attentive staff. I highly recommend this hotel
- 5/5
Nicely kept
- 4/5
Front desk was nice, rooms were clean for the most part, AC unit did it’s job, beds were pretty comfortable for the one night we were there, decent location for food and drinks, would recommend for one or two night trips for the price
- 4/5
Staff were very nice and helpful
- 4/5
Neat old hotel, right downtown near Union Square. Clean but very small rooms, lots of street noise and homeless.
- 4/5
The room was unexpectedly spacious, spotlessly clean and with all the usual features. The staff were very helpful and hospitable.
- 2/5
- Comfortable bed, for the most part. - Staff were nice and worked to resolve issues as best they could. Cons: - The bathroom has seen better days. - Noisy. I was woken up by garbage trucks knocking out the contents of dumpsters at probably 100 dB (as heard inside the room) at 30 minutes past midnight. Also, my room had shared door to the adjoining room which was not soundproofed at all. I could hear the conversations happening in the next room clearly, and what seemed to be the husband's nasty cough was distracting at times. - There were 2 ice machines in total, on different floors. The 3rd floor ice machine did not dispense ice, and leaked water onto the ground when it tried (see picture). Though I reported this to the staff at the start of my stay, it was not fixed by the time I checked out. - The front of the side table's drawer was falling off when I checked in (see picture). I complained to the staff and they sent a handyman to fix it fairly promptly, though the smell of the resin that he used kept me out of the room for the rest of the day. - The "refrigerator" in the room is really just a cooler. It did not seem to actively cool the contents, and anything cold I put in there was close to room temperature within 12 hours. It's not suitable for food, and in my mind, false advertising.
- 1/5
Not the best area. Staff was new and not very helpful. Elevator was broken. Our room didn’t have hot water and the room they wanted to move us to had mold.
- 2/5
There was only 1 staff member so we had to check ourselves in. Also Valet was a separate company so we had to wait for our vehicle to be called up and picked up which wouldn't have been a big deal but you are talking about SF traffic. The elevator was out of service when we got there. My deposit was held for over a week from our check out date and the staff member said it should be released on check out
- 2/5
Nothing
- 4/5
Stayed at hotel during remodeling. So there was a dumpster out front and the bar and coffee area where out of service. The internet was out so the TV wasnt working. However the room and atmosphere where great. I will return when all.amenities are open.
- 2/5
The property was still under construction. Nothing was open yet like it looks on the pictures. The rooms were okay but did have a weird smell. The disappointment comes from all the homeless there is around that area.
- 2/5
Doing construction on hotel so a lot of problems
- 3/5
Be sure you know that you’re staying in the Tenderloin. Pictures look much nicer than the hotel actually was. Restaurant, bar and coffee shop were all closed and not operating. Building is old, so they have a window AC instead of central air. Rug smelled musty when first came into the room. WiFi was not working at all, and it had very bad reception.
- 3/5
The elevators were out dated and the room was not leveled.
- 4/5
There was only one tiny elevator, which was out of service, so guests had to take multiple flights of stairs with their luggage.
- 4/5
Staff was nice. Room was pretty clean! Outside was gross but not the hotels fault
- 1/5
Very dirty
- 3/5
Tilden was an ok stay if you just need somewhere to sleep. The hotel was under construction/ renovations while I was there so there was a lot of clutter and construction workers walking in and out of the entrance. Not a big issue check in was simple. The elevator is TINY and barely fits 3 people. You can hear your neighbors through the walls pretty easily and the rooms are simple and seem to be getting updated? Idk it kinda felt somewhere in between new and old. I didn’t like that I could see other rooms across the courtyard through my windows. The room was clean though, that’s always important. But the bathroom was tiny and I’m 5,2 so I don’t like when the mirrors are high above the sink I couldn’t really see myself lol. The area in front of the hotel was clean enough but once you turn the corner you are bombarded with rows of homeless people. Which can be pretty scary, I wouldn’t suggest a nighttime stroll. The employees were very nice and helpful! Especially considering all that’s going on. It was a bit of a chaotic stay and I probably wouldn’t stay here again unless it was the last option. Maybe after the renovations….
- 1/5
Check in was tough as I waited outside for 10 minutes. The front desk attendant was sitting on the couches with his feet up in the dark and didn’t see me trying to get in. The elevator was is very slow and small. The last night of my stay, my TV did not work. Also, they should consider giving their guests water… The daytime staff members were nice upon entering and exiting the lobby. The housekeeping staff did great with room refreshing.
- 4/5
Impulsive staying over in SF with family and friends.
- 3/5
Elevators are uncomfortably small. Room was nice but everything felt cheap, it felt like you had to be extra careful. Staff isn’t friendly.
- 3/5
Room is very small, especially the bathroom. The pictures on hotels.com and online are deceiving. The bathroom and the sink are much smaller than shown. The hotel elevator only fits 4 people with luggage. It's a very small elevator and hotel, as well as room.
- 5/5
It was not good time to stay in hotel because of Covid-19, but the staff did everything to make our stay better. Very friendly and helpful staff
- 5/5
Modern, clean, nice restaurant & cafe. Lovely, helpful staff.
- 5/5
The property is clean, cozy and centrally located. Everybody was very nice and helpful. I enjoyed the complimentary coffee and the afternoon cookies :) Would definitely recommend this place.
- 4/5
Nice room. Very, very noisy had trouble sleeping last night
- 5/5
Great staff. Ping pong table. Unexpected restaurant credit.
- 5/5
Hip little hotel conveniently located. Front desk was awesome and super friendly. Thanks
- 3/5
Hotel was cute, and modern. Room looked a lot different than what was in the pictures. Also disgusting dirty area as soon as you walk out of the hotel. Homeless urinating in the streets, etc.
- 5/5
The hotel is great! It was convenient
- 3/5
I had adjoining room. I can hear everything even a whisper. I was trying to keep the volume down but the next door had TV on all night. I couldn’t sleep. I could hear candy unwrapping. Not sure if different room would be different. Good location & reasonably clean. Tiny sink in bathroom. U could hit ur head on glass shelf over the sink if u are not careful.
- 3/5
The $29 resort fee is a joke. It covers a $10 credit at the bar plus a weight room they should be embarrassed about (tiny and barely equipped). Room was a decent size but could have used a dresser and comfortable chair to sit in
- 4/5
Breakfast and bar good. The rooms were a bit dark and old fashioned, but very clean and comfortable. Location close to Union Square, althoughTaylor St is a bit rough - many vagrants on the street.
- 5/5
What makes the Tilden Hotel feel special is exactly the fact that it is comfortable in the Hygge sense with exceptionally good service. The lobby has ample space for relaxing, working, and playing board games. The morning coffee shop is excellent, serving great complementary coffee and tea, as well as fruit and pastires, including Kouign Aman, a delightful baked good that is often hard to find! The attached restaurant, the Douglas Room, is both hip and delicious, and is also a good place to get plated breakfast items like avocado or salmon toast and vegetable hash with eggs. The rooms have comfortable beds and Malin Goetz amenities. There are also in room K-cups (the compostable kind) and a Keurig, but the guys at the lobby desk were always nice enough to give us cups of hot water from the coffee shop to take up to our room when we wanted to make tea. We stopped by the Hilton lobby bar and rooftop bar next door, but always preferred hanging out in the Tilden hotel because we felt much more at home!
- 4/5
The hotel is located in union square so it is close various shopping centers. Ideal for business or pleasure.
- 2/5
No temperature control in room. Ceiling fan instead of air conditioning. Heat is regulated and only comes on from 6pm-6am. Was offered a space heater. Rooms appear larger on website then actuality. Neighborhood is dirty.
- 2/5
Room quality was poor, needs updating to be accommodating and worth the price. Very much like a super 8 than upscale it represents. Will not stay there again on business or personal.
- 3/5
The staff at the Tilden is great.
- 5/5
Great location and price!
- 4/5
Tilden Hotel is very user friendly; comfy beds, great staff, good location. The rooms are small but the lobby has a comfortable lounging area.
- 2/5
Hotel Pictures are deceiving. In a convenient place of the town. Parking is $50 per night.
- 5/5
It’s a great hotel with wonderful service!
- 5/5
It was a last minute hotel change but it ended up being a great stay! Staff is very accommodating and the GM made our stay even more comfortable by his hospitality!!
- 5/5
The staff was so accommodating. There was a rainy day and the staff provided umbrellas for us to use. Tasty pastries in the evening. Free coffee and tea in the mornings. They stored our luggage for us until we left for the airport. The only negative thing I have to say about this place is their location. We went through streets with a heavier homeless population and didn’t feel safe, especially since there had been a stabbing at a nearby Walgreens just a few days prior. However, it was still very convenient for public transportation and walkable to delicious restaurants.
- 5/5
Fun staycation for the family to see the festivities in SF. Love the location and convenience of this hotel.
- 5/5
i liked room condition but valet service was taking little longer than usual
- 4/5
Great location, easy walk to Union Square, decent walk to China Town. Close to trolley line. Loved the Douglas Room restaurant, great cocktails and amazing happy hour appetizers. Staff was super friendly and very helpful. Rooms were comfortable and the windows opened!
- 3/5
Super comfortable bed. Tiny bathroom and sink. No AC. Front desk staff unhelpful and disengaged, BUT the doorman was super nice and helpful.
- 4/5
Overnight trip
- 2/5
Very small 2 person elevator, be prepared to take multiple trips up and doen if you have children or extra baggage. Restroom is terribly small. It was windy in San Fran and the windows whistled like crazy all might because theyre pld and didnt completely seal the wind current
- 1/5
The property was very dirty. Rude staff. Very thin valls. Was cold in the rooms. Be prepared for unexpected charges on your check out
- 4/5
Good location. Friendly staff. Comfortable beds. Building is a bit older.
- 2/5
Poor location Feels more like a youth hostel
- 1/5
Totally disappointing. Will never go back again. Property is too old. Looks a lot worse than what the website shows
- 3/5
It’s just a block from a Hilton we have stayed at, but that block made a difference. The area around the hotel was not ideal. Also, the fitness room was lacking equipment, super tiny, and disappointing.
- 3/5
Service and staff were great. Rooms were clean and good value. The only problem was the room did not have AC so was difficult to cool down.
- 1/5
My Airpods were stolen from my car. Horrible freaking experience. No one was willing to do anything about it. I can guarantee you 100% it was stolen because my gym key was disconnected from my airpods and hooked back onto my house key ring. Who in the hell does that? Then the night manager told me the parking garage manager said no one claim they stole anything. WHO WOULD EVER CLAIM THEY STOLE BELONGINGS FROM A GUEST?? DON'T EVER COME HERE. If you want to get your things stolen and have no A/C, sure. Worst experience ever.
- 3/5
My only complaint was there was no AC. Sf gets hit nowadays so ac is needed.

The pictures online are misleading to say the least. My bedroom door was unlocked upon entering, which had me alarmed at first. There is also no air conditioning, and it was 80+ degrees in SF the days I stayed. Do not stay here.
- 3/5
This is definitely not a 4 start hotel by any means, definition a 3 star. The room was simple and everything felt refurbished. I was really disappointed with the mattress and pillow quality. While the Douglas room and front desk staff were great I doubt I’d recommend this hotel to anyone.
- 3/5
Avg hotel conditions, expected more for the price. No air conditioning was a put off. The wifi did not work the entire trip, and they were doing loud construction/renovations/fixing in the hall during my stay on one of the days.
- 5/5
I liked that this hotel was clean, comfortable and quiet, the staff was friendly and helpful. The location , walked everywhere! They accepted pets and the price was great for this area!!
- 3/5
Is older and a bit run down.
- 5/5
Rooms were spacious and clean. The hotel was clean and the bar/restaurant had a surprisingly great menu and drinks. The area was walkable and felt safe.
- 4/5
IT WAS VERY CONVIENT TO TRAVEL DOWN TOWN BY WALKING AND STAFF WAS FRIENDLY
- 4/5
Nice hotel in San Fran. Rooms are average but clean with comfy beds. No air conditioning so windows were open the whole time looking out onto a loud and busy street but thats to be expected in this area. Staff were great and very friendly and helpful.

I booked the first 2 days on line via expedia and i stayed more than 2 days and they told me at the reception that each day will cost 146$ and when I checked out they send me the bill that it was 199$ the last day and the day before was 146$ but before booking they told me 146$ the third and fourth day
- 2/5
Hotel was nothing to write home about. The room was ok. There was no AC only a ceiling fan so I would think twice booking in the summer time. The most annoying part was they charge a $33 a night per room “resort” fee. This was ridiculous as the hotel was not even close to resort.
- 2/5
The room was dirty..like gross stuff in the shower....corners of floors were dirty..hadn't been cleaned in a long time. Hotel claimed to have room service; however, there was no room service menu anywhere in the room, and when I asked for one they said there is one in the room...and took 10 minutes to find one for me. Elevator was so small, that it really could only hold two adults with their luggage, which already stressed me out because it was so small. As we were going to our room, the elevator stopped and an employee tried to get in with us..I kept saying no, please wait, I Can't because it's too small and I'm having a panic attack but she insisited on pushing her way in anyway. I actually broke down when I finally got out of the elevator. I have NEVER been upset in any elevator..this is an Extremely small one. For the rest of our stay we had to walk up and down 3 flights of really steep stairs. Online said parking was available, but failed to mention that it costs $49 per day and that it takes 20-25 minutes to get your car each time you park it. The hotel is I'm a very gross part of town but didn't look like it online. We drove to Fisherman's Wharf and when we got back, my husband stepped out of the car and into a huge pile of feces. We tried to get someone from the hotel to help us because he couldn't walk into the hotel like that..he needed to clean his shoe. A hotel employee couldn't find any kind of spray cleaner or anything for us to use, it was ridiculous.

Very clean room
- 5/5
Great location! Friendly staff.
- 3/5
The property is really old and seems really run-down compared to the hotels nearby. I was expecting average but this didnt come anywhere close to my expectations
- 3/5
No air conditioning and the rooms are so hot we couldn’t sleep. Was in a good spot and nice enough rooms but definitely wouldn’t stay there again.
- 3/5
Front desk staff were friendly. Maid service only made bed and changed bath towels. Nothing else in the room was touched.
- 3/5
No AC, bathroom small but functional and clean. Good cealing fan...very necessary. Not worth the price, but good for San Fran.
- 3/5
Overall the hotel was ok, but if revisiting I would look to stay elsewhere.
- 3/5
Reasonable cost for central San Francisco - but area just SWAMPED with homeless and down and outs, fighting in street and playing music loudly at all hours. San Francisco is DROWNING under this sh*t - but not the Hotel's fault.
- 4/5
AC? It was warm and could only open windows slightly. Or additional fans would work as well
- 2/5
Street very noisy...
- 5/5
The only downside is that their gym could hardly be called a gym. It is literally a closet that contains some free weights, medicine balls, a rowing machine, and peloton bike. There is no treadmill. You could not have more than 2 people in the gym at a time.
- 5/5
My flight from New York was delayed by 4 hours and I arrived at the Tilden at 3am. The hotel was very accomodating and friendly notwithstanding my arrival after the normal check-in window.
- 3/5
Would not recommend as staff were not transparent and overall the hotel was mediocre.
- 2/5
The walls are thin and the windows do not insulate the constant garbage noise happening outside from 1-5am
- 2/5
Being that it’s in San Francisco, I’ve stayed at places that do not have any air conditioning and a few open windows later, no problem. Not here. Can’t speak for other rooms but the room I had I opened both windows and I got no air circulation into the room and room temperature was a good 20degrees hotter than outside. I had a ceiling fan and they brought up a portable fan but it was so weak it was t blue to suck in the outside air and circulate it. That plus the age of the hotel the room had a musty smell to it that I couldn’t clear up because it was impossible to get any air circulation. I wish they had advertised or stated somewhere there was no ac but couldn’t find a mention of it on their website nor on the Expedia hotel info.

Awesome employees and very clean. The room was outstanding.
- 4/5
I liked the historical aspect of the hotel. It offset the tiny bathroom. They made use of the space they had to work with, while maintaining the integrity of the architecture. Loved the location and the staff was very friendly and helpful!
- 4/5
The hotel location is convenient, close to Union Square. Suggest to use O'Farrell Street instead of Ellis Street to avoid homeless people. Small hotel at good price with wifi.
- 5/5
The customer service was awesome. Everyone was nice and helpful. Would stay there again.
- 1/5
Rooms were old and basic. No mirrors in room. Just bathroom. Tiny uncomfortable sink. Shower clogged. Carpet dirty and uneven. No air conditioning. Very basic furniture. Not worth it. Good coffee shop and restaurant.
- 3/5
The staff was great, the valet was also. Very comfortable space but the shower was filthy, like they hadn’t cleaned it.
- 3/5
It is a little run down, no aircon
- 3/5
Room was clean and bed was comfortable. One of the noisiest hotels I've ever been in with a combination of water pipe noise and street noise kept me up all night. Rooms also do not have climate control so you're left with a choice of leaving a window open which seems outrageous given the street noise or be subject to a hot room.
- 4/5
It was what I expected
- 4/5
This hotel isn’t fancy but clean. It’s a typical old San Francisco hotel that they’ve tried to update as best they can. This gives it a nice vibe though. It was a bit overpriced, because they add on $33 resort fee and then parking is $50, so take that into consideration when you’re comparing prices. Although most hotels charge for parking. The sink in our room was very small and had a big crack in it, but everything was newly painted and linens felt clean. The valet was very nice and helpful. The location was great, near Union Square, Chinatown and about a mile from North Beach. You could walk to the ferry building as well. Probably about 2 miles to fisherman‘s wharf and Ghirardelli Square. We love to walk when we are in the city so this hotel was perfect, in a safe part of town and close enough to everything if you like to walk.

Great place to stay. Friendly sraff
- 1/5
If I would have known about that surcharge, I definitely would have stayed somewhere else. I travel to SF frequently and I know I will never stay here.
- 2/5
Don't let the pictures fool you, these rooms are extremely small. The bathroom was similar to the size of one on a cruise ship. Also not enough lighting. No entryway lighting even though there was a full size mirror there. The walk in closet had no lighting so I couldn't see into my luggage. And there were these shelves directly over the bathroom sink making it impossible to wash my face in the sink without getting water all over the floor. Bad design and no AC.
- 1/5
the reception people were just unpleasant, no real care if you are ok or feel safe. but wait!!!! if you book in the next few months of summer you get a free apocalyptic experience where every homeless in the city of san francisco will show up to ask you for some change on your way in or out of the lobby. its pretty gnarly! people sleeping on the sidewalks, every intersection has at least 30 people staring at you or trying to ask you for somthing, not the most safe or secure surrounding for a 4 star hotel. this is not a 4 star hotel, it is nearly a 2.5 and I am being generous. I would never stay or recommend this place to anyone, anywhere, at any time, not even if it was 1929.
- 5/5
Staff are friendly and caring. Check in was fast and you check out at noon, which gives people time to get ready to leave.
- 3/5
The room was small with no dresser drawers to put clothes for the week. The carpet was dusty in areas around the beds. There is a daily fee that you can use toward the restaurant, otherwise it is money wasted. Don't turn to the right or you will encounter quite a few homeless people. The walk to Union Square is good only if you turn left out of the hotel.
- 4/5
Had a good time at the bar. And only a couple blocks from the cable cars!
- 4/5
Nice location. Rooms a little small and gloomy. We were charged an additional $30 plus tax a night to cover WiFi, room tax and inc a $10 voucher to use in the bar. It wasn’t optional and I found it difficult to understand the receptionists explanation. Should have been inc in room price on Expedia but not sure if the hotel or Expedia are at fault. It just felt like an unnecessary charge.
- 5/5
The hotel is really clean and really comfortable. I would and will stay there again sometime in the near future. Overall the place is nice and has the perfect location for walking distance locations, to union square or even Chinatown.
- 3/5
The doors need to be adjusted as the walls are not soundproof. Every time someone closes a door it sounds like they are slamming it. As someone who is sensitive to noise, this was concerning and would wake me up. No control on temperature in the room did not make it that comfortable..
- 1/5
The only good thing about Tilden is its location - it's just across the street from Hilton and minutes away from Union square. Overall, it was a really bad experience and I am truly sorry I didn't pay a bit more and stay at a better place.
- 5/5
It was a great stay, great staff, great location!
- 5/5
my stay with this hotel could not be better! my favorite part of my stay was the friendly staff and the location of my stay. my checkout time was 12:00pm but wasn’t leaving sf till 7:30pm and the staff let me keep my stuff there until i left! again, great stay.
- 5/5
Great hotel, very friendly staff who were happy to provide lots of recommendations for our trip! Thank you!
- 4/5
Nice coffee shop with a friendly barista. Room was comfortable but the walls are thin. If you have noisy neighbors, you will hear them.
- 5/5
Excellent place close to everything. This place is literally on the fridges of the Tenderloin District, but great location and staff.
- 4/5
Nice room, huge bathroom! We could tell the hotel needed a little caring for but overall ok standard. The walls must have been thin because we heard everything that was said in the next room. The local area is better than other areas in SF, yes there are homeless people but they are everywhere and there is hardly anything the hotel can do about that.
