Reviews
The Clift Royal Sonesta Hotel is highly praised for its beautiful property, friendly and accommodating staff, and central location. However, some guests express concerns about the surrounding area and the cost of parking.
- Beautiful property and recently renovated rooms
- Friendly, accommodating, and helpful staff
- Surrounding area can be unsafe and unpleasant
- Expensive parking

We ate at Frederick’s several times throughout the stay for breakfast. The food is ok, my only complaint was the staff in the cafe, had they been the slightest bit more friendly, they may have gotten tipped.

Best bed I have slept on in the US. Truly unbelievable. Sell me the bed.
- 5/5
Very clean, centrally located. Great breakfast restaurant attached to hotel. The housekeeper was outstanding! Clean towels and bed made daily. Our room didn’t have a view.

Large room, comfortable beds.
- 5/5
Great value for the money. The room was comfortable, the staff was friendly, and the overall experience exceeded expectations
- 2.5/5
They lied about having private parking. It was the most important reason why we chose them. We ended up having to carry bags across a the block, which, because of the current state of the city, is a bit more sketchy than we would like.
- 4/5
Very good
- 5/5
The property was perfectly located near so many stores and restaurants. We felt save even when arriving late at night. The staff was amazing and housekeeping cleaned our room every day. We didn’t get to try the bar or the restaurant however both looked great, we just had other things on our itinerary. Will definitely stay again!
- 5/5
Great hotel and bar staff. Our only wish is that they had hotel valet parking.
- 5/5
Room was spacious and quiet. Appreciated the daily room servicing. Great location in the heart of downtown San Francisco.
- 5/5
Check in was fast and easy property and room was clean bed was soft and staff was very nice
- 5/5
Great location. Walking distance to so many restaurants and shopping. Clean and spacious room. Helpful, friendly and efficient staff. Cool lobby bar too!!
- 5/5
Outstanding hotel which is centrally located with a great bar and the best martini in town
- 5/5
The Redroom was wonderful!
- 4.5/5
The rooms are clean and big. The staff is nice and helpful There is no parking space that they provide. You have to find parking space yourself

The location is great. There is a nice breakfast place with good selection. The bar offers wide range of drinks, and the staff there is really nice. The bed was very comfortable The rooms are a lot different from the photos. Bathroom was very small.
- 5/5
Excellent location, great rooms, and awesome service. If possible, nightstands and a or a dresser would be helpful. Closet organizers would also be great.

Comfy bed Very clean Room faced the Main Street where there was lots of noise. I think we were located in a somewhat ‘bad’ area at night. Front staff, the one we got was not welcoming at all. Also be careful there is bottled water that is complimentary for the first day then you have to pay. I a Only knew because I asked. There was nothing to say how much or that you had to pay. There was also team and coffee again no costing so we assumed free - wrong again.

I do miss the absence of a complimentary breakfast though. The gym was sufficient, small but extensive equipment. 10/10 experience!
- 5/5
Wonderful property in a great location. Would definitely stay here again.
- 5/5
The staff was very helpful and nice
- 5/5
10/10 overall
- 3/5
There’s no valet, no direct parking lot (you have to use an outside parking lot down the street), no assistance with luggage. Room was clean & modernized.
- 5/5
Great hotel and room. Appreciate having real glasses in the room. Seems like a small thing but makes stay more enjoyable. Was upgraded to a high floor mini suite with great view of Nob Hill. Wonderful location.
- 5/5
My favorite sf hotel in union swuare
- 5/5
It's a short walk from Union Square. You can also walk to any part of town from there, or hop on a lime scooter/bike so it's super convenient like that. Something to be aware of: it's in the tenderloin district where there's a concentration of homeless people. That said, it never felt unsafe.
- 5/5
The hotel is with a long history but the room is luxurious, spacious and clean! Redwood Room Bar is definitely worth a visit, superb atmosphere!
- 3/5
Poor attitude from breakfast waiters.
- 5/5
Clean rooms
- 5/5
The room was wonderful and the staff were exceptional. Everyone was so helpful and attentive. Would highly recommend!
- 5/5
Wonderful staff and very clean, only downside is the parking
- 4/5
Great hotel. Neighborhood itself not so fun unless you are going to the theatre. Service elevator a bit noisy if your room is is in the back corner of the hotel. Front desk staff very friendly and helpful. Nice breakfast option. Comfortable bed. Clean. Nice bathroom.
- 5/5
Really enjoyed my stay at The Clift. I just wish there were more amenities.
- 4/5
In my room wasn’t any possibility to hang my 6 suits and no “luggage table” to put my luggage. I came several times in this marvelous hotel, but it was the first time that my room was small enough to have no wardrobe and no shelf for clothes.
- 5/5
Great hotel!
- 3/5
Property was very pretty and clean. Could have used an ice machine. Front desk seemed bothered that I was checking in, not a very friendly tone of voice. Perfect location with lots of restaurants surrounding it.
- 5/5
Beautiful hotel, clean and spacious room, responsive staff, and the very best bar in the City.
- 4/5
Well appointed room, a little dated. Very comfortable bed
- 5/5
All great
- 5/5
Clean room. Nicely cleaned each day. Beds are very comfortable and the bathroom is updated and had nice toiletries.
- 4/5
Staff were nice and helpful. Breakfast options seemed pre-made.
- 5/5
The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Lobby was lovely and welcoming, and the bar had 80s music on Saturday evening. Breakfast at the restaurant was easy and tasty. The room was clean and comfortable beds, quiet at night too. Union Square location close to T station and BART.
- 5/5
This is my go to place. They always make sure they take care of me.
- 5/5
10$ daily room credit was lovely! Bed was comfortable with good quality linens
- 5/5
Really lovely stay. Excellent staff and my room was HUGE and clean. The neighborhood isn't the greatest, but the hotel takes you right out of that vibe and turns it into a relaxing environment. I will definitely be recommending this hotel for anyone headed to SF.
- 5/5
Overall great experience!
- 5/5
Nice size room, extra clean, breakfast was so good. Nice and quiet.
- 5/5
My family and I absolutely adore this hotel. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, and the location is perfect for exploring the city.
- 4/5
Good value great location
- 4/5
Fredricks breakfasts were amazing and the Red Room was really cool - perfect hotel bar with a great vibe.
- 4/5
The staff were very helpful. The area was walkable. Parking was inconvenient and expensive. The building is old and, although renovated, it felt a little run down in the room. For example, the bed was saggy and the pillows were not comfortable. The windows were dirty.
- 5/5
Great hotel. A bit pricy but very clean and very nice
- 5/5
Great location…
- 5/5
Stay was great
- 5/5
Friendly staff for sure. Beautiful bar downstairs. Breakfast/lunch restaurant Frederick’s is super nice with great offerings - just wish it was open longer. Very nice room.
- 4/5
Very accomedating staff. Clean, calm and comfortable.
- 5/5
Very nice and clean.I stayed in this hotel before.
- 5/5
covennient location, clean rooms
- 5/5
Great hotel with great character in a great location.
- 5/5
The room was very clean and the bed sheets were like heaven.
- 5/5
We enjoyed the stay.
- 5/5
Hotel is recently upgraded and very clean. An oasis in the middle of the city.
- 5/5
My stay was excellent as always! The staff and accommodations are the best!
- 5/5
Clean rooms, beautiful aesthetics. Area after 1 is not the best but during day it’s a different world. Overall loved our stay
- 4/5
Good location. Comfy bed. Large suite. Bit dark decor
- 3/5
I understand that the hotel is next to a crowded population center with much foot traffic....but for a premium hotel the atmosphere was stark. There was NOTHING offered as an amenity....not a coffee bar at 6am, nor a mint on the pillow, ...nothing. The hotel is connected to a sorry little overpriced cafe (Fredericks) with grumpy people, costco-quality pastries, and overpriced for a less-than-premium product. When we arrived at 10pm there was NO kitchen open and nothing available (except the barman graciously provided some popcorn....and thanks for that.) Bottom line is that there is a premium hotel legacy and a premium hotel pricetag ....but nothing really premium about the 2-day stay.
- 5/5
The room was immaculate. Housekeeping is phenomenal
- 5/5
Very nice and clean rooms, staff was incredible and the overall vibe and location was perfect.
- 5/5
This is a historic property important to the history of San Francisco. The lobby has been re-done by Phillip Stark, and was popular with young workers on weekday afternoons. The rooms were clean and comfortable. I would reserve it again.
- 5/5
Nicely situated close to alot of things to do.
- 5/5
Great place to stay Wonderful staff
- 5/5
The cliff hotel is one of my favorite hotels in San Francisco. My wife and I had a fantastic time. We got a complementary upgrade and it was a wonderful experience. It started with how they took care of our luggage arriving and departing, as well as everything in between we will certainly be back in the future.
- 5/5
Conveniently located close to restaurants, museums and shopping malls
- 5/5
The staff was wonderful. Mostly our concierge, Steve. He went above and beyond to make our anniversary so special. We are planning to go back to San Francisco later this summer and the main reason we will stay at Clift Royal Sonesta is the service level that Steve provided us. Thank you so much.
- 1/5
Bed bugs
- 5/5
Should be a nightlight in the bathroom, very hard to find in the middle of the night and when we checked in the TV did not work, the power cord was missing
- 5/5
Loved the corner room. Super clean, and much quieter than my last stay at the Clift (your walls are very thin, might be worth investing in insulation in the future).
- 5/5
Great
- 4/5
Staff was great. Room was clean. About a 15 to 20 min walk to china town and little italy. Easy access to the trolly that takes you to market and the piers/fishermans warf.
- 5/5
Spotless and super comfortable! Staff was attentive and everything was in great working order.
- 4/5
confortable bed, appreciate the keurig coffee maker, water bottles and very stylish and spacious lobby.
- 5/5
Amazing room and staff
- 5/5
Absolutely amazing!!!! Great customer service. Super sweet staff. Security is beyond amazing on property. No one can just go to your room. Rooms are excellent. My go to stay from now on in San fran
- 4/5
The room was clean and the staff helpful. The location worked well for us.
- 5/5
All great.
- 4/5
Only downside is I could hear doors slamming shut all night when people returned to their room.
- 5/5
Stayed here for 2 weeks. Immaculate rooms, beautiful views and very good service. Would love to visit again!
- 3/5
A lot of hidden costs and the receipt was not accepted by my company for work travel. They add RESORT fee. Most of it not used and FOOD credits also unused. They tell you at the desk upon check in and what do I do? Make a new reservation on the day I am supposed to check in? The neighborhood is not good. Maybe two blocks over is much safer.
- 5/5
The staff was super friendly and the lobby and rooms were clean and updated. The bar off the lobby was a good time. It’s really close to Union Square and theaters. It doesn’t have parking, but there are safe nearby garages.
- 5/5
Note: No Valet or Onsite parking. Closeby garage is $40 per night with in & out 1x per day. No Ice machines: call front desk and ice is delivered to room.
- 5/5
Attendants in the front were great!
- 5/5
Very clean and room cleaning everyday. Comfy & spacious room.
- 1/5
Staf
- 5/5
Good location, polite staff, quite clean room.
- 3/5
The staff at the front desk saturday evening was very non inviting. We came in about 10:30pm . The two at the front desk made me feel like I was not important. There was no bell hop or even a cart. They saw I had several bags and did nothing. My first impression was meh. Also there was no door man to help out with where to park, and the front desk did not recommend anything.
- 3/5
This is the first time I have stayed in The Clift for a number of years. Previously it was upscale and sophisticated, now, not so much. There’s nothing much wrong but then nothing much right. It’s just, average.
- 5/5
Perfect location Great staff Very clean
- 5/5
We reserved a king room with a junior suite. It had a sitting area. It was really nice. The staff was great. Room was really clean, clean and comfortable. Our room came with a $36 credit per guest to use the restaurant downstairs for breakfast. It was very nice.
- 5/5
Room was extremely spacious, clean and the staff was very nice. Location was perfect!
- 5/5
Room was nice and clean with high ceiling. Comfortable bed
- 5/5
Great location, clean and family friendly. Highly recommended!
- 1/5
No parking and additional fees they charged I almost paid total of 3rd night payment
- 5/5
Very nice
- 1/5
Terrible noise, bad service
- 4/5
Hotel was very clean and great locatiin. Special thanks to Todd who was very attentive and addressed any concerns and Eric who who recommended great restaurants and sites to visit.
- 5/5
Clean large room😀
- 3/5
The atmosphere was nice enough but the room wasn't entirely leaned, duct tape on the wall and a balloon left in the room. We also had a food credit that was eye stressful to use becausualltc
- 4/5
Cons: area not the greatest, walls are thin between rooms - we could literally hear their conversations from our room
- 2/5
Payed for room and showed up and had to put 350 down for the room very unnecessary. Fire alarm went off in the middle of the night which was false. The view that it said it had was false as well all you see is the dirty top of the building not a great stay.
- 4/5
Nice rooms
- 5/5
clean, well appointed room in a good location.
- 5/5
Room was amazing
- 5/5
Always feels like home , very comfortable and spacious suites .
- 5/5
Staff was amazing. The rooms felt clean and the hotel was very well maintained.
- 3/5
It was a surprising lack luster experience.
- 5/5
The hotel, room and bathroom were all very nice. The breakfast spot attached to the hotel was great. The only complaint is that the hotel itself borders the bad side of town. I left one morning and came across used drug paraphernalia 100’ from the front door (at another property). I would still stay there again for the price and considering how nice it is.

Excellent hotel
- 2/5
Very judgmental
- 5/5
Very welcoming and warming, beautiful ambiance and was very nice of them for my birthday to upgrade my room to a city view :)
- 5/5
Everything was wonderful
- 5/5
The hotel room was clean and above all else, the staff was incredible... We will only stay at this hotel when we come into town!
- 3/5
I was never told about the destination fee until I checked out. They told me they are keeping $33 per night before returning my deposit, and when I inquired about it, they gave me a small booklet which said in return for the destination fee, they provide $10 food and beverage credit. Because they only informed me of the fee at my check out, I had no chance to use $10 credit I get in return. Ridiculous.
- 5/5
Staff was great. Very accommodating and friendly. Room was very clean and bed was extremely comfortable.
- 5/5
What a wonderful stay how beautiful!
- 4/5
Nice staff was very helpful and friendly. The only thing is that is was very little light in the hallways
- 5/5
Great hotel to stay at.
- 5/5
Great property and staff. Clean rooms. Friend’s birthday and the staff brought us a champagne toast to our room for our group of 10. Location was convenient but didn’t feel too safe to walk at night unless in a group. Would definitely recommend and would go back again in the future.
- 3/5
My main issue was the lack of sound proofing. I had very bad nights' sleep as I could hear doors slamming on my floor at all hours, as well as TV, phone calls and late-night trysts from adjoining rooms.
- 4/5
Room was good and the staff was great. The parking was terrible and super expensive
- 4/5
Clean room
- 5/5
Great place
- 1/5
When I went to lay on the bed, I sank in all over the place. The mattress felt as though it had been carried over from the old hotel before they renovated or shipped from another location that had likely closed. It had definitely been used for multiple years. The duvet did not have a sheet over it and it had a bad mildew, dirty laundry machine smell to it that was so repulsive to me. Like layers of previous guests sweat. When I went to lay down, the pillows had the exact same smell. If I turned the AC off, the mildew smell from the bed would takeover the room. I called and asked for new pillows and a duvet. 2 of the 4 new pillows
- 5/5
Friendly staff
- 5/5
Very nice room
- 5/5
Breakfast excellent off of menu. Rooms upgraded to junior suite.
- 5/5
Fantastic!
- 5/5
Stayed in a suite. Was spacious and beautiful. Would definitely book this room again!
- 5/5
Clean and spacious room with courteous staff. Very good price for downtown SF. Only negative is the road noise in early morning. We were on the 6th floor facing Geary. A higher floor would have been better.
- 4/5
Room was made well but lacked attention to detail when room cleaning was requested, e.g. dirty coffee cup not replaced, ice bucket left for 2 days in the room.
- 4/5
Parking
- 3/5
Room itself was ok, but walls are very thin. Could hear people in adjacent rooms as if they were in my room. TV, conversations, could hear everything. Even got woken up at 3am by noise from next door, you can imagine why. When I brought it up to the front desk, they knew this was a problem and didn’t seem to care. I won’t come back to that hotel
- 5/5

- 5/5
Best hotel in Sn Francisco. Excellent experience starting from check in to check out.
- 2/5
Staff was nice and the room was pretty good. However, having a hotel that is supposed to be this many stars have no restaurants open at all on Sunday and Monday and having no room service or even snacks/mini bar, and a breakfast that is like a Starbucks pay at the counter type thing, is quite disappointing/not what I would expect.
- 5/5
Nice hotel very happy with the stay better price the the Westin and just as good
- 3/5
Dark room and poor service
- 5/5
Great spot and friendly staff. Only pain point is hard to use free breakfast with long lines. Room very comfortable and convenient location.
- 3/5
I could hear the guy next to me on work calls at 4am in the morning, that’s how thin the walls are
- 5/5
Bar staff is always nice. Just adore Ted and Jacqui!
- 5/5
Clean and comfortable room. Only problem was that the hotel walls didn't block the sound well, with the result that calls taken early in the morning disturbed the sleep of my neighbors.
- 5/5
Good location close to popular spots downtown.
- 5/5

- 4/5
The hotel as a whole is overall nice, with friendly staff. We had a large king suite city view and the room was clean (other than water damage on ceiling) but was more built for looks than function. Tiny tight bathroom with no towel hooks … but then a huge empty space with a mirror across from the closet of wasted space. No hooks for raincoats in the entryway. Tv with limited channels and no working screen mirroring to play something from your phone. Location was nice near the theaters and places to eat- like most places in SF you turn down one street next to the hotel and it’s really rough/ drug use etc. wouldn’t feel comfortable in this area walking around at night.
- 5/5
Only complaint is that Ubers to and from this hotel is a little wonky, but everything else was great! Fredrick’s is sooooo good too!
- 3/5
Checkin at close to midnight room was not ready. One of the beds was not made and had to waiting for bathroom also to be restocked. Call to change to another room and was told that there wasn't another room available.
- 5/5
Great hotel. We had a wonderful stay and will be back again!
- 5/5
Quiet and clean
- 5/5
Property was beautiful. Staff was extremely nice. Great Location.
- 5/5
The room was very large with a huge closet. The bed was very comfortable. The room was clean, quiet, and had a large bathroom. Slept like a dream! The staff were friendly with easy check in and out.
- 4/5
Area around the hotel is sketchy at best. So I did see people cooking and using drugs and someone in a full in fentanyl bend. The addiction problem around there is bad. You’re 2 blocks off union square which the city is try hard to revive. I don’t plan on staying there again. Too weird!
- 5/5
Iconic luxury hotel
- 5/5
The hotel was very clean and the staff was friendly. We loved that there was a separate living area from the bedrooms and that it had two TVs! The location was very convenient and everything was spotless.
- 5/5

- 5/5
updated interior, friendly staff
- 5/5
Loved my stay here!
- 5/5
Great location
- 3/5
Hotel is old and dated. The area is dirty and does not feel safe at all.
- 5/5
Amazing stay!
- 5/5
Convenient, spacious and functional. Worked well for us, this was our second stay here. Will use again if we are here.
- 5/5
great natural lighting, comfy bed, clean room
- 1/5
Hotel added lots of hidden fees that were not disclosed at time of booking. Buyer beware!
- 5/5
This hotel is beautiful, from the lobby to the bedroom. We have been so impressed. We had booked to stay in a suite, but got upgraded to the deluxe suite on arrival. Our jaws hit the floor when we entered the room. The room was spacious, the bed was comfy, the bathrooms were immaculate and the views were wonderful. We would certainly consider staying here again, we loved every moment of our stay.
- 5/5
Amazing room and great location
- 3/5
For a hotel classified as Luxe and costing nearly $300 a night, I was very disappointed to find there was no mini bar in the room. On top of that, the hotel charges a fee to bring up deliveries, which left me having to go down to a public area to pick up my order. Not exactly the level of service I would expect at this price point.
- 5/5
Great hotel, beautiful property, nice amenities, free upgrade, let me check in early because they had a room available- which we were very appreciative of. The staff was professional, very helpful and knowledgable and went out of their way to help. Will definitelt stay here again.
- 5/5
Beautiful hallways and room in a top-notch hotel that definitely earned my repeat business.
- 4/5
I’m old so don’t go out at night - a few movie channels for evenings would be nice, but I enjoyed it.. loved having a good breakfast place on site!’ Overall a lovely stay, thank you …
- 4/5
Shops nearby
- 5/5
Good customer service and nicely renovated rooms.
- 5/5
Great all around
- 1/5
Right at check in, the staff tried to sell us an upgrade package for 100$ more per night stay, all while talking down on the room we booked. So… already off to a bad start. The worst part had to be that apparently the security guard tried to come into OUR ROOM. opened the door, didn’t say a thing, and when we told the staff member, who happened to be the same person that checked us in - said “are you sure? Fine I’ll change your keys” but didn’t offer any solutions or apologies. Would NEVER stay here again.
- 5/5
I was very Satisfied
- 2/5
Our TV nor did our AC work.
- 5/5
Love it would stay again! Location was close to everything!
- 5/5
We enjoyed our stay so much! The staff was friendly, the room just great, spacious with a nice view, and well-located. It was comfortable and sparkly clean. This would be our first choice hotel on another visit to San Francisco.
- 5/5
Our stay was amazing! My wife and I started in on of the suites with an amazing view and the staff was beyond helpful, and friendly!
- 5/5
This was a last minute getaway. I loved it!!.
- 4/5
The stay at the hotel was fantastic! And great service, beautiful hotel

We were on the 8th floor and there was still the occasional car alarm or siren, however the walls between rooms are rather thin. When we had someone staying next door we could easily hear conversations. It was ok, we bought earplugs and slept very well. For the price I would say this hotel is a very good deal.
- 5/5
I could have melted in that bed, it was so comfortable. I was even searching for the tags of the pillow brand so I could duplicate the setup at home! Thank you Clift Hotel! Of course I will be back soon!
- 5/5
Spacious rooms. Modern decoration.
- 5/5
Great hotel
- 5/5
Such a beautiful and very clean hotel. We loved being greeted each time we had entered the building, and loved how quiet our stay was. We had the best breakfast at Frederick’s that was located within the same building of the hotel and overall enjoyed how close it was to tourist attractions.
- 5/5
Perfect
- 5/5
I love this place. The staff is exceptional and it is a great location.
- 5/5
If you are staying in the Union Square area of SF this is a great hotel choice. The bed was very comfortable and the room was large and clean.
- 4/5
Easy access to public transportation
- 1/5
Based on online and per Hotels.com, the restaurant was supposed to be open on Monday's but it is not. Since we arrived around 7 pm, our plan was to grab a quick bit at the restaurant and call it a night. Restraint not open even though it is listed everywhere as open is BAD.
- 5/5
Very nice hotel that is well situated for easy access to main sites. Bed was very comfortable, room size was adequate and staff friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay here again!
- 5/5
I didn't like seeing homeless people on every corner. This isn't something the hotel can control, but it unfortunately affects the experience.
- 4/5
Would book again
- 5/5
The concierge service really stood out as excellent. Our female concierge made two superb restaurant recommendations to us and secured us a last minute reservation. We were delighted. Thank you.
- 5/5
It was great! The room was spacious and clean. Didn't even find dust in the drawers. When we needed extra pillow and a blanket, it was provided to us right away.
- 5/5
Clean, quiet, comfortable. A+

- 5/5
We had a pleasant stay at Clift Royal Sonesta. Great location and excellent service.
- 5/5
Great property and great experience!
- 5/5
Good hotel. Clean and staff is friendly. Only negative I would say is the water pressure isnt the greatest. I would be back though!
- 4/5
Gorgeous small hotel, large rooms, comfy and clean. No room service after breakfast - knocks this down a star for me. Otherwise, first class place with first class staff.

One of the few hotels I’ve been to that is actually worth the price! Everything we needed to be comfortable.

Very clean and staff super friendly

This is a decent corporate hotel that was once a hip fun boutique hotel. I would stay again if doing work near there but would not for weekend or wanting something unique, well designed or with great service. I had a mediocre drink in the bar which was $22, fine if a wonderful cocktail in San Francisco but not for something you’d find in Fresno (no offense Fresno). I stayed here a long time ago, knew it had been redone and hoped for something updated maybe even cool but just another Hyatt or whoever bought it.

nothing you can do with the location but the hotel itself was amazing and the staff was understanding.

We were on a quick getaway from our home in the East Bay. We really enjoyed this hotel. Sonesta has modernized this older hotel, updating it but leaving a lot of its charm.

We were staying here for one night for our anniversary and were very happy with the room. The staff we interacted with was super nice. The noise levels were moderate, which is expected in a city. It was easy to tune out. The only thing is there is no parking offered by the hotel, it’s about a 2 minute walk up the road to a parking garage with 24/hr security which wasn’t inconvenient, just not what we were expecting.

I had a great stay at this location and I would recommend it to others.
- 4/5
I enjoyed the wonderful room and the service at this hotel. However, I did not like that there wasn't an area closer to park the cars or a valet service. When I arrived at night, I felt unsafe walking two blocks to get to the hotel after dropping off my car at the self-parking.

Staff at front desk very friendly . The hotel bar was closed on two days we were there. The hotel is a little musty .., if they let some fresh air it would have been great . The outside area wasn't safe after night . Lots of drug affected ppl and homeless. Lots of stores closed and run down.

The property was great and the staff was incredibly helpful and kind. The hotel is really at the edge of the Tenderloin which made me hesitant to go out by myself at night.
- 5/5
We loved the hotel and the value. Only complaint is the loud noises at night from surrounding area.

Clean, lovely staff and just over all nice hotel

Booked room with chase lounge for young daughter to sleep but were given a with a king bed with chair. FD agent informed me that king bed sleeps three and cared less to accommodate my family. Brought my daughter to tears. Upon cancelling our five night stay reservation, a different FD agent offered an upgrade with higher price point but we declined. Booked a spacious room next door at the Marker where the FD agent corrected the wrongs at the Clift with complimentary drinks, snacks, and even called us to make sure we enjoyed the room.

Great service. Beautiful room we were upgraded to since we were Expedia VIPs.

Great service and staff. Upgraded to the suite, which was double the size and worth the extra cost

The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating, going out of their way to ensure my stay was comfortable. Check-in was smooth, and every interaction felt personalized and genuine. My room was spacious, clean, and beautifully designed, with a comfortable bed and large windows offering a great view of the city. The amenities were top-notch — everything from the plush robes to the high-end toiletries made it feel like a true boutique experience. I also appreciated the central location. Just steps away from Union Square, it was easy to explore nearby restaurants, shops, and attractions. Despite being in the heart of the city, the hotel was peaceful and quiet — perfect for relaxation after a day out. The Redwood Room bar is a must-visit — chic, vibrant, and a great place for a craft cocktail in a stylish setting. The vibe was upscale but unpretentious. Overall, The Clift Royal SF exceeded my expectations. Whether you’re traveling for business or leisure, I highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a luxurious and memorable stay in San Francisco.

It’s in a little but of a dicey area, but I always felt safe and the staff and doormen were fantastic.

Special thanks to Jackie the bartender at the Redwood Room for always making us feel welcome! Albert the doorman is always kind and helpful. This is why I keep coming back to the Clift - the staff who’ve been there for years!!

Perfect hotel stay in San Fran
- 1/5
This has always been one of my favorite San Francisco hotels and we always try to stay here for at least one night. When we checked in last night we were notified they no longer offer valet so we were forced to park around the corner for $70. NOT A FULL SERVICE HOTEL any longer clearly. We won't stay here again. Sad to see that is has gone downhill with Sonesta.

The beds were comfy but the walls are thin. Could hear next door occupants sneezing and other things… also, from 7-10 am could hear upstairs noise, maybe our room was below housekeeping storage? Room was nice size, beds were comfy and staff were polite. Fredrick’s was delicious choice for breakfast next door. Would I stay here again, probably not. I can’t say location was fabulous bc of union square, two blocks over, lots of homeless and sketchy for the family to feel safe.

Just a great experience overall room was a corner room 1533 just beautiful

Hotel was very clean. Paid for a king room but got a queen.
- 4/5
They said they would only give it to me by paying 75 dlls

Staff very friendly. Room comfortable. Easy walking to restaurants.
- 4/5
The hotel itself was great. The room was large and clean; the staff was friendly. The only issue with the property is its location. It’s in Union Square, just on the inner perimeter of the Tenderloins. Walking a block or two in most directions will place you squarely in unsafe territory. The streets were filled with unhoused individuals, many of whom appeared to be on drugs. There was human excrement on the streets, etc. I would not stay there again for that reason.

Welcoming and clean spacious rooms
- 5/5
I really enjoyed my stay.
- 4/5
The property is close to Union Square and the famous Cable Cart system. Public transport is easily accessible from this location, so should you be interested in adventuring to other areas, this location makes it easy. There are several nice cafes and restaurants around, including the Redroom at the hotel itself giving lots of.options for dining. Be mindful that this property is located close to the Tenderloin, so be careful traversing at night.

Don't have space to put the cloth and the bathtub held the water.

Clean, spacious, well appointed rooms. Kind and helpful staff.

Pleasant Staff

Excellent !

Great property and staff. Surrounding area is sketchy for sure so keep your wits about you or walk with someone else. Parking garages near by are terrible aside from the self parking one. No Valet on property either which was a bummer.

My favorite hotel in San Francisco now (as a local). Perfect stay, Fredreicks is pretty good for breakfast, but you also have Pinecrest a block down which is as San Francisco as it gets. I was well taken care of by the staff. Redwood Bar is also swanky if you're into that sort of thing.
- 4/5
I stayed here when in San Fran for business. The location is very central. The hotel is newly refurbished and is in tip top condition. They were very accommodating in making sure we had a quiet room. The redroom is worth a visit but be sure to go in happy hour otherwise it’s very pricey. The gym was equipped enough and clean. It could be more eco friendly, we hung up towels but they were still replaced. And the cups for coffee are disposable which seems unnecessary. I’m sure also there is a more eco friendly way to provide water in the rooms.

Reliably an excellent choice for a weekend getaway.

Nice hotel in general, great room, comfortable bed. Only downside was proximity to some sketchy neighborhoods.
- 5/5
Loved the big chair and the hotel bar, it was super close to everything, and lots of restaurants were nearby. Would stay again.

Nice central location. Nicely renovated.

Great hotel to stay at!

I had an excellent experience at this hotel. The accommodations were clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, and the staff provided exceptional service throughout my stay. What stood out most was their integrity—after I accidentally left my credit card behind, they promptly contacted me to return it. Their honesty and professionalism were truly commendable. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone seeking a reliable and pleasant stay.
- 5/5
Beautifully updated hotel in a great location, for the most part. As others have stated, when you leave the hotel to explore, make sure you take a right. Going left will lead you to an unsafe area with homelessness, drugs, and crime. Since we headed that warning and took a right everytime we stepped outside the hotel, we had no issues. Union Square is only a 3 - 5 minute walk from the hotel, there's great shopping and restaurants within walking distance from the hotel. It really is in a prime location. The breakfast in their restaurant is delicious and great quality, but it is extremely expensive. For example, a single Belgian waffle with a few berries on top is $21... no sides, just the waffle. Other than that, we have no complaints about our stay. If we go back to San Francisco, we'll definitely stay here again!

The redwood room is the main attraction for us and bartender Jackie is amazing!
