Reviews
The hotel reviews are mixed, with some guests praising the charming, retro motel with clean and cozy rooms, friendly staff, and great location. However, others have had negative experiences, citing issues with construction, maintenance, and cleanliness. Some guests also mentioned problems with WiFi and TV not working.
- Charming, retro motel
- Clean and cozy rooms
- Property under construction, tools and materials left outside of rooms
- TV and WiFi not working
- 3/5
Far from Downtown, on the main road (noisy), broken tiles in bathroom, air conditioner loud and did not cool the room much, single-ply toilet paper, no shampoo/conditioner, door lock very difficult to open with actual brass key. Room was clean. Pricepoint was good but not considering the condition. We were disappointed.
- 5/5
The property management is excellent. Rooms are clean and comfortable. I will differently stay there again.
- 5/5
Room was very clean. Staff was very friendly not far from downtown, but the beds were very hard and the pillow is very flat.

the motel is old and needs updating, the rooms are musty and dark

Old school hotel, with nice bed. Staff very nice. Nice clean, quiet place
- 4/5
Great 1 night stay. Clean. A little dated. Some nearby road noise until about 9pm. Desk staff friendly & helpful & accommodating. I’d stay again.
- 5/5
This room (16) was perfect. We got in late and had an appt the next day and just wanted to sleep after a 7 hr drive. They were accommodating, no extra or hidden charges. The bed, omg soooo comfortable and the pillows, there were so many n so soft..it was like going to grammas house . Thank you for a safe wonderful place. Ill be back to visit instead of buisness and i would choose this hotel hamds down !

Clean room, fit what we were looking for in an affordable room for one night.

Always a great stay!

The bed was so old that the springs (yes springs) were digging into my hips while I tried to sleep. I couldn't walk for 2 days after my stay here. As an added bonus there was an air conditioner that kept turning on and off really loudly. The manager charged an old credit card and didn't give me the opportunity to charge my room to a different card, which messed up my finances. The manager called me within an hour of check in wanting to know "when I was checking in". Really? I come to find out he was trying to leave early and ended up leaving my room key outside in the front. Apparently check in is only from 4-5pm. If you try to check in later they leave your key outside. Overall this was a bad experience. I was not happy with management or the room. It was also $200 which is really overpriced for a flea motel.
- 4.5/5
I like the fact that it was on the main Street and the trolley stop was right there by the motel everything was easy accessible restaurants bars gift shops
- 4.5/5
Late night or very early morning, a pounding like someone knocking on door. Investigated by myself by looking out window, hopefully un noticed by what was making the noise, did not reveal anything. Happened 3 times with each incident not revealing the source. But in that regard, we did notice trash cans knocked over with their contents strewn about. Having witnessed these signs before, we decided that a Bear had visited the area around the motel. The area of where we stayed, is inhabited by wildlife, including Bears, so thankfully, we were not bothered by what apparently happened
- 1.5/5
The owners need to fix this place up...a lot!
- 5/5
I loved the quaint decor, the paneling, it was clean and comfortable. We will plan to stay there the next time we’re in Durango, the end of Sept, this year.
- 5/5
Location,quit, comfortable
- 4.5/5
This place was good for the money. availability, and clean fot it's age. I like the single story building and being able to park right in front of your door. This place was good for the money but I wouldn't consider it above a three star hotel. it's just older, clean, but nothing classy about it. We were just passing through town so only stayed one night. If I were staying a few more days, I would get somewhere a little nicer
- 3.5/5
Enjoyed our stay, would stay again, Thank You
- 0.5/5
Bed was pretty good. Frig and micro worked fine. The door lock was the worst I have ever seen. The metal latch screws were removable with my bare hands. The dead bolt went into a wood hole. No metal reinforcement was used. Didn't feel safe. Before going to bed, I blocked the door from the inside.
- 1/5
Very disappointed with the room set up. The water flows cold at both washroom tub and handwash tub and isn't hot or warm and literally the water flowing out so cold. How could we take a shower with that. The room space isn't big for 4 pax and noisy traffic over the night. There is no intercom set up in the room to communicate frontdesk.
- 5/5
We wanted the old-school, road side motel experience for our family vacation and this fit the bill. Check-in was easy, it was pet-friendly and clean.
- 0.5/5
Rooms too small for the price. Room was not clean and heater didn't work
- 3/5
Drawbacks: - Staff were not EVER present at the front desk. The door remained locked and I had to call if I needed anything. Including check in. - Tight parking lot, even for my small car. - The fridge was not clean in the kitchen. Not a big deal since I didn't use it but still gross. That is it. Not bad but not great. Id give it a solid 6/10. I would recommend it over other motels in the area or if you are looking for a good deal, this is a good choice.
- 5/5
Comfortable and peaceful
- 4/5
The room had some cute amenities, like a log in the room. There was a high, built-in wood shelf to eat on. The beds were comfy. There’s a great bbq place nearby. We loved the nightlight toilet! One side of the room had a dresser and closet but no light at all. I used a flashlight to see what was in my suitcase. The kitchen had inadequate silverware and utensils for cooking.
- 5/5
This is the worst place we've ever stayed. The comments that was left on Expedia giving it a great place, is not true. If I was Expedia I would not recommend it. Dirty, nothing like the picture, no remodel in our room as stated. Kitchenette was a joke. Regular cups and glasses out with no protective covers. Should be using throw away cups. Were did they clean them bathroom. Floor tile was dirty, cracked and loose. Could not get heater to work. I could go on. Just find a better place.
- 5/5
Friendly staff, good stay.
- 2/5
It's was pretty rundown. The toilet did not work . Had to flush it 5 times to get stuff to go down. The sewer backed up right outside our door under our car. The staff asked if we could move our car at 10pm so he could stop the overflow of sewage coming out flowing down the driveway. Don't like to complain about a place but it was not good. The bed was comfortable.
- 4/5
It was fine; served the purpose
- 5/5
Good staff. Family owned. Clean rooms. Highly recommend.
- 5/5
Always my go to
- 5/5
Stayed 2 nights in Sept as part of road trip with a friend. Adorable family owned motel. Super clean and comfy and only 5 min to train. Great price!
- 3/5
Quaint
- 3/5
The mere was no ice. The lighting in the room was very poor.
- 5/5
Great stay lovely family awesome location
- 5/5
Very cute motel with super helpful staff
- 4/5
Unique little place.
- 5/5
Super cute place in Durango. Walking distance to lots of things. Highly recommend!
- 4/5
Excellent stay, as usual. Easy check-in, friendly, down to earth staff, nice room, and good Durango location. Very fair price. I’ll stay here again!
- 4/5
Worked out great. Old and nostalgic type rooms. Reminds me of years ago. Easy check-in and room was clean.
- 4/5
Owner was very friendly upon checkin. Room felt old fashioned and homey. Other than a few stains on the carpet, looked clean. We stayed 2 nights and would definitely stay again. Great place for the price!
- 3/5
The hotel could really use some renovation. Rooms were quiet and that's a plus. The AC in our room quit because the filter was clogged; I cleaned it out myself. The TV was really funky and I could never get it to operate the way I wanted. Family run operation with no one ever at the front desk, you need to call them on the phone for help. But they may not be available when you need them. Poor bed and pillows.
- 5/5
We enjoyed our stay there. It was conveniently close to the train station for our train excursion in Durango.
- 5/5
it was nice
- 3/5
The office staff is very friendly and kind - The rooms were "clean" but in dire need of new carpet and poorly lit. The door deadbolt didn't work. Must say the room was clean but is very old
- 4/5
It was acceptable
- 5/5
A very nice family run motel. Walking distance to a market, adult beverage store and food.
- 5/5
Clean,comfortable,friendly, quiet location.
- 5/5
Owner had an older English Ensign motorcycle. Nice bike.
- 5/5
Nice hidden gem. Old style charm. Very friendly staff.
- 5/5
Great place to stay & the management is fantastic! Zero complaints! Thank you guys VERY much!
- 5/5
Staff was great
- 5/5
good location
- 4/5
Family weekend getaway. Owners were very accommodating and helpful. Room was very clean and beds were comfortable. Quiet even though close to main road. Will stay again in the future.
- 1/5
The bad: young man who checked me in had a bad attitude like I was was an inconvenience. Property looks like a junk yard. Garbage in the drive way. Working on motorcycle right next to the entrance. Kids shoes right outside the front door. Junky vehicles bikes and misc junk all over the property. I will never stay at this place again. The good: the room was clean. Outdated but clean. These people need to get it together. Place has charm. Pick up all the garbage and clutter, change your attitude when checking guests in and then it would be a decent place to stay. Show some pride in your business. Bottom line you’ll never see me staying there again.
- 5/5
Beginning with checkin when I met the pleasant owners, a father and son I was impressed . Their wives also help run it. It’s old and has not been remodeled to look new and that’s why I like it. It was clean with a comfortable bed. We will stay again
- 4/5
It was a cute place, very clean and quiet..
- 3/5
Wifi was very weak and intermittant. Limited electric plug ins (maybe add a newer lamp with an outlet and USB port?) and they were very "loose", in that the plug would fall out of the outlet. We like the mom n pop places, but this one was showing it's age. Tile floor in bathroom was broken with most of the grout missing.
- 1/5
The room was supposed to be remodeled but was not. Broken tiles all over the bathroom floor. My two little Yorkies would not stand or lay on the carpet which is unusual. Bed was lumpy and too soft. The owner's seem very nice and I am sure they are beginning a renovation or something. Thank you.
- 4/5
Good value for the money. Comfortable bed. Upgraded bathroom. On main road.
- 3/5
Old comforter and blanket need to be replaced from the 70's. Buy a white blanket you can bleach. Get rid of.old throw pillows that probavly dont vet washed and thrown on the bed.
- 5/5
easy access to downtown.
- 4/5
There was very littlr outside noise and is a nice distance from main road. Was disappointed that there was no dish soap to wash dishes or pans to cook in. Light in kitchen #10 going out.
- 2/5
Just don’t. Particularly the family suite. There are no words.
- 3/5
The Caboose is a good value for the price. It's super clean, with a large, comfy bed. It is an older motel, but everything worked (except the internet the first night, but that was fixed the next day - probably a modem reboot). It's old school, so there's no 24-hour desk attendant. If you want something before of after hours, you have to call them. But they were super nice and accommodating. I also found it surprisingly quiet, especially since it's right on Durango's main drag. It's not too far from downtown, and there also a trolley stop not far away if you want to avoid the hassle and cost of parking downtown. Plenty of amenities nearby if you need them. Some rooms have kitchenettes -- mine did, and while I didn't really use it, it might be nice to have for a long stay if you don't want to eat out every meal. Overall, for a basic, budget stay in a pretty expensive town, I'd give it a thumbs up.
- 5/5
Nice location with convenient access
- 3/5
Upon check-in, the door was locked while employees sitting outside ignoring us. A paper was taped on door with last names of check-ins for that day and corresponding room#. Written was "key in your door". The room and bathroom were very clean, but baseboards and bathroom tile needs work. Bathroom and linens were very clean! One of the two mugs next to microwave had handle broken off. The grounds were very nice with trees, grass and seating.
- 4/5
Everything was alright
- 5/5
Started out a little rough for personal reasons but with the attentive management we checked into a lovely renovated room. Absolutely adorable western themed. The motel was very quiet and appeared to have contracted workers staying there.. possibly from road construction. My daughter and I felt very safe staying there. Great find on our cross country road trip
- 3/5
Think the owners are trying. But just not a good experience.
- 5/5
Love it there
- 4/5
Charming, retro motel. Quiet at night.
- 2/5
Property under construction, tools and materials left outside of my room, tv doesn't work
- 5/5
Nicely decorated, clean and cozy and very helpful staff! Definitely recommend!
- 4/5
Cute, clean.
- 5/5
This motel had everything that you would expect for brief lodging and all was in perfect working order. The staff was incredible.
- 5/5
Great, clean and comfortable stay close to Main street. Wes was super friendly and checked me in quickly and recommended a excellent place for dinner. This will be my new go too for a night or two stay in Durango.
- 5/5
Very clean. Older hotel, but modern conveniences. 15 Minutes to train. Will stay here anytime I'm in Durango.
- 4/5
I love these old motels, they are so filled with nostalgia. Caboose Motel is classic; a bit rough around the edges and a little worn, but very clean and cozy. Bed is very comfortable, lighting is not great but passable, as a whole, it's charming and quaint.
- 3/5
The bed was super soft wasn’t comfortable. The room was very outdated. The walls are thin. You get what you pay for.
- 5/5
Super friendly staff and a truly unique place to stay. Would very highly recommend!
- 5/5
A quaint little place. Stayed 2 different times within a 10 day period. First room needed some work and deep cleaning, minor updating wouldn't have hurt. 2nd visit in a different room and it was better/cleaner. Certainly not the Ritz but we enjoyed our stay in a cute little local motel with a long family history.
- 1/5
It is “pet friendly “ just not cat friendly. We stayed somewhere else that night.
- 3/5
I wouldn't stay again
- 3/5
It was great that they only charged $10 for our dog. Lots of street noise as well as the room next door. Nice grounds and close to walking path along the river
- 4/5
Value was OK but our room could do with a renovation and maintenance in many areas - no working ventilation in bathroom, WiFi not working through our whole 3-night stay despite reporting to front desk, taps dripping in kitchenette and bathroom. No major complaints but we'd look for somewhere in town or in Mancos next time for a visit to Mesa Verde/Durango.
- 4/5
The caboose was a great one night stay for us. The bed was good, water pressure in the shower was just fine, and the little gated area was perfect for our young dog. The Gazebo had a nice selection of games. Nice to hear the train whistle every so often, too.
- 4/5
Quiet and pet friendly
- 5/5
Room very clean, customer service is excellent. Grounds provided great rec area and dog friendly.
- 2/5
The room was adequate but without a dresser or bedside table. Bathroom was only ok - shower floor was cracked, missing floor grout, floor could have been cleaner. Location was great.
- 4/5
Good room, but overpriced.
- 3/5
Friendly staff. The room was poorly lit and the door was in such bad condition that you could hear every car, truck and motorcycle that drove by the property.
- 5/5
The owner and staff were wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. The property is older but very well taken care of, clean and comfortable

Caboose was such a neat little motel. It is no frills but clean clean clean. Staff was nice and courteous. It takes you back to days when you are young like the 1970s. A real key on a caboose key chain, front of room parking, If in Durango I recommend The Caboose.
- 3/5
The ac could not keep up was not on when we checked in and didnt get cool enough to sleep first night for t he high rate they charge i expect good a/c
- 2/5
It was nice but the bathroom sink didn't drain, with black water in sink
- 1/5
No one at the front counter for check in. Took a few minutes for a guy to make it up front to get us keys. Not the warmest reception. Total dump. Room we received looks nothing like the pictures. It looks, and smells, like a partially finished basement, if there were basements in trailer parks. Furniture is 40 years old and very tired. Nasty industrial carpet, cheap fixtures, nothing matches. Decorated with junk from a 1983 garage sale. I especially like the vintage inner spring bed that bounced like you're on the moon, and the $40 contractor spec vanity in the bathroom with a faucet missing an aerator so it shoots water all over your pants when you turn it on. No amenities. Appears to have had a hot tub at one time, which had been converted into a play pen and storage locker. Nightmare parking, steep slope, tight turns and difficult access for trucks. Definitely ripped off. At $40 a night, this place would have been fine. At $70 a night, it would be a stretch. At $160 a night, this is a total scam. Would have been better off sleeping in the back of our truck down the road at the excellent United Campground.
- 5/5
We love this place and stay here every time we visit Durango. it is family owned and operated and has such a convenient location! The owners are always available to help with any issues, and it’s great to have A/C and heat available!
- 5/5
Good value
- 4/5
I liked the kitchenette and the original design which was both old fashioned and modern artsy.
- 5/5
I can stay at any chain I want, but they are all the same so I seek out “charm and quaint” on purpose. Caboose has a wall heater and kitchenette like the 1950’s and I loved it !!
- 4/5
This motel is older and may need some updating and a little maintenance - the tub drain was slow and the main door in the room we stayed in needs a new seal. The heating system is pretty dated, but works, just probably not very efficient. Overall, for our needs (roof over our heads and a comfortable bed), the place worked well enough.
- 1/5
Booked this place based on reviews. Wife and I checked in and went into the room to get some rest. As I turned towards the window side I saw the manager(the guy who checked us in) peeping into our room from the gap between the window curtain. As I saw him he ran away. I immediately followed him and asked what was he doing. He started making stories that he was looking for his dog. I knew he was lying. Me and my wife felt unsafe. We called 911 and we went to that guy in the presence of the officer and got our refund. We trusted EXPEDIA for this booking but we were stuck in the night trying to find a different spot on our own. Not a safe place at all. Also do not expect EXPEDIA to own when you book from their website.
- 5/5
This dog friendly spot in Durango is great! Easy access to the river walk and great dining without the crowded atmosphere of downtown. The room was comfortable and very quaint! Loved the decor.
- 3/5
Very busy highway next to room. Not the hotels fault. Poor lighting in the room.
- 1/5
The exterior photos are not accurate. Front desk person was very unwelcoming and made it clear he didn’t want to be bothered with guests. The mostly naked painting of a woman that was being painted at the front desk seemed extremely inappropriate in that location for all to see when they check in. The parking lot is a little small given the large trucks that appeared to be vehicles of longer term guests. We felt unsafe with the activity of some of the other guests. There are too many other choices to stay here. Also, the location is at the narrow end of the town resulting in very close neighbors and noisy trucks on the street right behind the property.
- 3/5
The room was clean. The bed springs were broke and the bed was very uncomfortable. We told the cleaning lady and she said she would tell the owner. That was the first day and we never heard from them again.
- 4/5
Been there before. Nice.
- 3/5
Very clean. Staff friendly. Beds are AWFUL!
- 5/5
Cool little place. A little outdated, but clean and brought me back to the old days.
- 3/5
room old and in need of repairs check in at a window outside no lobby, No amenities like shampoo. not all that friendly or welcoming
- 5/5
I really liked the style of the room and decor. It was very cozy and didn't make me feel like I was in just another hotel.
- 4/5
Charming little motel. I'd be happy to stay there again when passing through Durango.
- 5/5
Really enjoyed my stay at the caboose. It's a very cool and funky place...like staying in someone's cabin in the 60s..I can see where it wouldn't be everyones thing but I loved the uniqueness. Barbecue place a couple blocks down is really good too. I would stay here again
- 2/5
Rooms smelled of animal urine. The updates to one of the rooms we had were really nice, but the room still smelled like animal urine.
- 4/5
It was a remodeled room, new bed, new appliances. There was no closet in the room, and no chair in the room. There was a microwave in the kitchen but no eating utensils except for one spoon. When we arrived in the middle of the afternoon, the office door was locked, and there was a sign on the door to go to an outside check in window, where I had to ring a bell to get someone to come into the office to check me in. Overall, the motel was clean and remodeled, but very small motel room. We did enjoy a little outside area, with a gazebo, hanging swing, grill with gas. Motel is in a great location, close to restaurants and food stores
- 5/5
Cute and affordable place to stay. We’ll definitely be back.
- 5/5
Nice and quiet.
- 4/5
Really cool family-owned place older but well kept n decorated really cool! Room was like a one-room cabin. Felt really homy. Room was clean air was cold shower was hot bed was comfy. The lady at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. They had a gazebo with guitars and some other instruments and a few games it was a cool seating area. Within walking distance of serious Texas BBQ I recommend going there it's delicious! Other places are in walking distance as well. Will definitely stay again!
- 4/5
Good overnight place to stay. Clean.
- 5/5
Everything was perfect, clean and the staff were very friendly. Highly recommend 💕
- 2/5
The bed were good, had bugs in the beds, neither tv worked
- 4/5
This property is quaint for a train town!
- 2/5
I arrived at 12:00 p.m. because I thought that check in was at that time and the person who was in the office was grumpy and rude. She told me that nobody checks in until 4:00 o'clock, I left and come back at three o'clock because I saw in the itinerary that I can check in at three, but they make waiting until for O'clock.
