On the outside Muir Lodge Motel is unassuming. It is on a street with lots of traffic during the day. Inside, it's a different story. Very clean, with faux wood floors (no hard-to-clean carpet) and spotless new stylish sinks and tiled shower/tub. A free city shuttle bus from the Amtrak station and historic downtown Martinez stops right at the motel.

Modern clean motel
- 5/5
Simple, but perfect for a single guy.
- 5/5
This was a clean, nice room with a small fridge/freezer, a sitting area, a desk, and a well-appointed modern bathroom. There are a lot of hotels on this stretch of road, many of which are awful despite fairly good reviews. This place was quiet, well run and, if I may say it again, clean.
- 3/5
Room had over powered smell of cleaning products. Way too much!
- 3/5
Parking is convenient. Room was clean, howe
- 5/5
This was a very cute clean place to stay
- 5/5
Pleasant overnight stay. The lady at the desk was very nice and helpful
- 4/5
Stayed one night. The room was clean and well kept. The only drawback was that the hotel is on a busy street, and we could hear cars passing by.
- 1/5
Very loud. Proof that putting lipstick on a pig does not help . They tried to modernized an old motel with a nice neon sign. The room was so loud that even with ear protection - trucks might have been driving through the closet. The lobby smelled like curry and boredom
- 5/5
The room was small but well kept and clean. The staff were very nice.
- 5/5
Friendly, clean and cute.
- 4/5
Room was clean. Staff friendly. The bed was very hard and a little lumpy. Mattress needs replaced.
- 5/5
The room was very nice.
- 5/5
I stayed in room 1. Parking was right in front of the room. The heater worked great. The water pressure in the shower was fantastic!!
- 3/5
Older facility but newly remodeled, comfortable beds smaller rooms street traffic was a little loud, friendly staff. We were only in town for one night, so it served our purpose well.
- 3/5
Easy to get to; quiet; good pricing
- 5/5
Staff was awesome, the room was very clean and smelled good. Parking was close to room, and neighborhood was quiet at night. The only downfall to this room was the mattress was very uncomfortable (hard)
- 4/5
bit of noise from the street, but overall a clean and nice place.
- 5/5
Old style motel, like a Travelodge, but meticulously updated for a pleasant modern stay. Short walk to coffee, restaurants, and the Muir house.
- 4/5
noisy from street, but overall a nice place
- 5/5
Our stay was fantastic. Clean, nice rooms. Big nice TV. Free water which is always appreciated. Only complaint was one of the rooms smelled of cigarettes. They did offer to move our room. Great service.
- 5/5
Our room was recently completely renovated. Close to everything. Price was very reasonable for what you got. Now have an excellent place to stay when we’re in the east bay. Very pleased.
- 3/5
Good stay for the price.
- 4/5
No in hotel food. Martinez is very cute.
- 5/5
Love staying here! They are amazing
- 4/5
I'm sure it's hard to keep up on but the only observation of something needing attention was the front porch; it appeared that the previous guest had spilled something sticky and bits of dirt and debris were clinging to the spill.
- 3/5
This updated classic mid-century motel has interior updates but remains unfinished. There was a bad smell in the closet next to the bed (no doors to close it off). I reserved a king bed that morning but upon arrival was told it wasn’t available due to “a plumbing problem.”
- 3/5
Alhambra Ave. is right there and noisy although less so in the evening. The rooms don't have carpets and thus not as comfortable.
- 5/5
Nicely remodeled
- 3/5
Cob webs above toilet and bed.lots of dust
- 4/5
Room was spacious, updated and clean. Bed was comfortable and there were 2 chairs that reclined so we didn't have to resort to sitting on the bed. Staff were friendly and courteous. Hotel was conveniently located for our purposes.
- 4/5
Super clean, quick check in, comfy bed, convenient parking. Only drawback is the traffic noise. Ear plugs were on the nightstand, so managers are aware of the issue. Not sure if anything could be done to soundproof the rooms. Other than that, a very nice motel!
- 5/5
I've stayed here many times over the last 10 years and am so grateful for all the comfort they've provided. Thank you!
- 4/5
The pool was not avalible

upon checking into room we noticed debris on the floor under chairs and bedstands. TV was unable to navigate to any channels-had to call front desk and person brought a different remote to get TV working. Had to be done again the following morning so this time he left "special" remote so we wouldn't have to call again. blanket and sheet did not fit the mattress, Was our 2nd time here and appears a lot has changed since 1st visit..
- 4/5
The hotel is extremely model inside and nicely decemated.
- 4/5
With great Parking rooms were very clean and comfortable.
- 5/5
Clean and friendly
- 3/5
Staff was nice and welcoming. Location is convenient to the freeway. While it seems many updates were made to the property, some items could use improvement - for example, the door was not flush with the framing which allowed a draft and road noise into the room. This may also explain why it smelled of cigarette smoke.
- 4/5
Clean with a reasonable price point
- 5/5
Great place to stay. Clean and convenient. Helpful staff. Will stay again! Thank you!
- 5/5
Nice and convenient place to stay. Very comfortable and clean. Staff are always very nice. This is our second time staying here.
- 5/5
The outside looks like a charming 1940-50ish roadside motel. Cute as can be with red period chairs. Step in to completely remodeled modern furnishings, comfortable beds. Will return!
- 4/5
It was fine. If you want to turn in for a night's sleep in Martinez, this could be the place. It felt safe enough to house a 9 yr old kid & parents. Has a Jack in the Box right in the front. So you'll be fine for dinner.
- 5/5
I had a nice stay staff was the best so kind helpful I will be back again I’ve stayed twice so far loved it so clean.
- 4/5
Clean and nicely updated
- 5/5
It's a two mile walk down Alhambra Street. Martinez is a very nice community and the Muir Lodge is no frills place with modern amenities and a great price, perfect for my purposes. It's right on Alhambra so there is traffic noise. Next time I will ask for a room further from the street.
- 5/5
This is a really nice place to stay, off the radar of most. The rooms are nice, not overdone, and a fun downtown is short drive or an easy walk away. Whenever in Martinez, I stay here.
- 4/5
Great price and very clean room however the exterior of the property was not very clean or attractive
- 5/5
Well, the biggest thing here is price. For the price, it is the best value one can get in lodging. I had no problems at all. Air conditioning was good. Bed and pillows comfortable. Furniture...adequate. Easy chair was good and appreciated. Bathroom and shower was clean and adequate. Front desk was good. Neighborhood was very pleasant. Television was good. Electrical outlets...needed more of them. It is a tech world we live in. ha. Lighting...adequate.
- 4/5
Nicely maintained interior.
- 5/5
This is a cute old-style travel motel that has been beautifully renovated and updated. Very nice room!
- 5/5
The rooms are updated, it’s extremely convenient to John Muir house national Park. Their roofs are completely covered with solar panels!
- 4/5
The only negative was the reception. He wasn’t rude just not friendly. Other than that great place to stay.
- 3/5
What I didn’t like: the decor of the room didn’t fit with the theme of the motel, the water faucet was intensely loud when turned on, and on the final night of our four-night stay, other guests stood outside our room talking loudly and partying until almost midnight. We felt encroached upon and intimidated due to this behavior which we feel should have been dealt with immediately by motel management.
- 5/5
Clean, comfortable just what I was looking for.
- 1/5
Not clean, pretty gross - review ratings not accurate anymore
- 5/5
Someone did smoke weed outside our door later at night but other than that it was a good stay.
- 1/5
Arrived at 3pm and noticed neighborhood was questionable but still had hope the room might be ok as we had an event that started at 5pm that we still had to drive to. Upon entering the small front office we noticed it was stuffy (no AC) and smelled like a restaurant. The front office person took our ID and after checking on the room, returned to tell us it would not be ready until 330pm. He said that the maid was busy cleaning another room and she would get to ours next. There were no other clients there. Then they offered to let us into the room in the meantime as we needed to start getting ready. As we walked up to our assigned room I glanced inside at what appeared to be the remains of a night of partying with beer bottles on every surface and the stench of alcohol mixed with some type of previous attempts to mask unpleasant odors with cleaner. There was no possible way either of us could have tolerated the smell. We told him we would not be staying whereupon he informed us there would be no refund as we prepaid. At minimum he ought to have been able to discount our stay based on the “LATE check-in”. And honestly should have never offered us to even go near that room. There were no other rooms available. Disappointing.
- 5/5
Great staff, nice location.
- 4/5
Would suggest cleaning staff decrease the amount of Fabulosa used to clean the rooms. Had to air out the room upon arrival. Recommendations for dinner and breakfast were the best meals of our trip.
- 5/5
Outstanding Housekeeping
- 5/5
This is a good place to crash for the night but it is not luxurious at all. Very Spartan, basic no frills lodging. Price is right for that.
- 5/5
It’s very nice here , staff are very respectful .
- 5/5
As clean and quiet as possible on a busy stree. Highly reccomend.
- 3/5
Room was clean, but the perfume used was very pungent. Made my allergies shoot up
- 5/5
The property looks like an old 1960’s motor inn. However, upon opening the door, one can see that the rooms are upgraded in every way imaginable, but not overdone either. Great coffee house a block away, flat walk to town approximately 2 miles & 2 miles back. This was my 2nd time staying here.
- 5/5
Nice
- 4/5
Very accommodating and attentive. Great rooms.
- 4/5
This motel is clean and very well kept. Convenient location and reasonably quiet. Definitely worth the cost. I would stay here again.
- 5/5
Nice room, great refrigerator.
- 4/5
This is our second stay at this delightful property. Nicely upgraded with comfy beds and great location. Thank you!
- 5/5
Very nice room (#8), quiet, in my opinion recently remodeled and tastefully decorated.
- 5/5
The motel is fairly basic, with a small pool being the only amenity. I didn't need more than a room, so it was fine with me. Check in was easy, with a friendly staff.
- 3/5
This room had dirty socks left in it and very loud because of distance to the main road. Also there is NO breakfast included. You get a danish in package. The price is good.
- 1/5
Was booking a room friday night at midnight and i selected checking in the 17 and checking out 18 and the app changed the date cuz it was midnight and i was not refunded
- 4/5
Very clean. Park in front of your door. Restaurant walking distance. Easy access
- 5/5
Super clean room.
- 5/5
Great find and close to our favorite places!
- 5/5
This is a great little place and we were pleasantly surprised by how updated the room was. It was really nice. The bed was super comfortable too! Would definitely recommend this place!
- 5/5
Nicely updated. Noisy street but they included earplugs in the rooms. Thank you!
- 5/5
Our stay at the Muir Lodge was perfect for us. The room was very clean and comfortable. Only saw staff at check-in but she was courteous. We were traveling on Amtrak so needed Uber to get there and back to train station. There is a free bus service that runs by it but we couldn't figure it out. There are a few restaurants close by. The street noise was a little loud in the morning but not unmanageable. All in all, I would recommend.
- 1/5
The bed sheets looked unchanged. Pillow cases were terribly drained, one was so bad that it is impossible to imagine any business person with bare minimum sense would continue to use it for rooms at the motel. Once I pointed out to owner, he was defensive and said they were washed and cleaned, but stained. He would not understand. Sink and shower were not clean. The door security latch did not work and was very flimsy as well. The complimentary soup and lotion and … had been opened and had marks and stains on the outside tube and bottles. I walked in and walked out in one minute to go back to office to let him know I could not stay there. He refused to give me refund. I lost about $150 last night, including the $9 insurance type thing that Expedia strongly recommended. Obviously, the rating of 8.4 was a complete fraudulent attempt to bring customers in. Very very disappointed. I ended up sleeping in my car somewhere because it was too late to find somewhere else. Very upset I lost the money. Awful place and experience, Expedia.
- 1/5
The employees were hideously awful and rude .
- 5/5
The motel had updated the rooms in a very tasteful way. I was very comfortable and felt safe as an older woman traveling alone.
- 3/5
Perhaps in a bay-area location, one shouldn't expect the same experience as in other locales for the price charged. The room was a bit small, with two beds, there was only room for one chair. There was some plumbing issue in the bathroom so although it was clean, it sometimes had an unpleasant odor. The beds were comfortable, however, and the TV did work well.
- 5/5
Super nice rooms and nice little amenities in the room. Comfortable and quiet. I highly recommend!
- 4/5
I like that it was close my classes. It was within 10 minute drive.
- 5/5
Really cute place to stay, has beautiful original sign outside, gorgeous pool, and room was clean as well as I love the style of furnishings. Internet worked great, and room even came with waters and danishes. Fridge worked perfect, and ac kept room cool even though it was a blazing hot weekend. Very close to gas station, Jack in the box, and has ice machine and soda machine. I will stay here again, for sure.
- 5/5
Well updated during last remodel.
- 5/5
We stayed there for a family reunion. 2 nights very quiet
- 5/5
Older hotel. The rooms have been updated, very clean and nice. Highly recommend.
- 2/5
The tub was dirty and didn’t drain properly the washcloths were stained and there was a lot of noise from the street. It is a very basic motel
- 5/5
Nice place! I would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
I was nervous because it’s a motel but it was updated and comfortable. Great stay, check in was easy and service was good. Shower had nice hot water, but it was small. Room was clean with a microwave and fridge. The two free bottles of water and pre-packaged pastry was a nice surprise. Good location for our quick overnight stay for sporting event.
- 1/5
Beds are over 36 inches off the floor making it impossible for the elderly to climb into bed safely, and when I informed the staff I could not stay there and cancel the additional days I was charged for the entire 3 days without any refund. Very disappointing
- 5/5
Ok
- 4/5
We made our reservations a couple hours before arriving at the motel so I think we got the last room. It was small & the queen bed was not very comfortable. Other than that everything else was great, as usual. We have stayed here before. Nicely renovated & clean.
- 5/5
I am very impressed with the Muir Lodge!
- 4/5
The room was very clean and looked to be recently updated. The bed was very comfortable.
- 4/5
The room and bath were decent, thebed comfortable. The tv was weird, lots of sports but nnot much to watch without extra fees.
- 5/5
updated room, clean and comfortable. was cold and lot of noise but that was to be expected given other reviews. i will stay here again.
- 3/5
The hotel allows smoking pretty much anywhere outside the rooms, given the way things are, if someone is smoking, you will smell it. This was an issue at my first stay but I wanted to give it another chance. The next time I was in the area for work I opted to stay further away in Walnut Creek. I probably won't be back here, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. Just know it may be great, or not depending on the room assignment and your neighbors/traffic.
- 5/5
Very clean & quiet. Close to supermarket, liquor & drug stores. Very comfy beds.
- 4/5
Our stay was short but pleasant. The room was clean & fresh, however the tub could use some fresh calking around the edges. The bed was hard & creaky. The extra blanket was a nice touch though. Will stay again.
- 5/5
A welcome surprise, very clean & modern. I was also pretty quiet. Will not hesitate to stay there again.
- 5/5
From the street, the motel is old school vintage looking but the rooms have been remodeled and are nice and clean. There was a fridge/freezer, complimetary water, and prepackaged breakfast pastries in the room in addition to ear plugs, a coffee maker and an iron w/ ironing board. We arrived early, before our room was ready so they kindly held our luggage for us. It is located on a busy street so if you are a light sleeper, you may have to use the ear plugs.
- 5/5
The room is very clean and the beds are very comfortable. Staff is very pleasant, welcoming and accommodating.
- 5/5
Comfortable stay
- 5/5
The management has done a great job upgrading the furnishings with good attention to both quality and design. Bed was terrific. I have nothing negative to report about Muir Lodge. Would definitely stay there again.
- 5/5
Second time here. We go to Martinez twice a year and the stay here is excellent
- 5/5
Very clean and nice people. I have stayed here before, and will again.
- 4/5
Small, nostalgic motel, with clean nonsmoking rooms. Well priced.
- 5/5
The motel was renovated, very clean, nice amenities.
- 4/5
Lights in room seemed like fluorescent. Beds were too high. Bedspread had burn holes from probably cigarettes. Also found a dead roach. Eeek! Good shower.
- 5/5
Just a darling property! Perfect for what we needed! Loved the quaintness of the place.
- 4/5
Beautiful room. Very happy with our stay. Only complaint was that the mattress was a bit hard. Great donut shop across the street a bit. Would stay here again.
- 5/5
Nicely upgraded rooms, walkable to downtown, accessible to open space preserves.
