Reviews
The hotel is generally well-liked for its location, service, and staff. Guests appreciate the charming, old-world atmosphere, but some find the rooms and decor to be outdated and in need of refurbishment.
- Excellent location near Central Park and shopping
- Friendly, attentive, and gracious staff
- Rooms and decor are outdated and worn
- Some issues with room cleanliness and maintenance

The hotel was very close to the Park Avenue Armory, which is why I chose it. It was a great experience--I had dinner in the bar, and the service and food there was first rate.
- 2/5
Location is good for shopping and park and museums
- 5/5
It's a charming hotel with a friendly and attentive staff. It's a small property that is welcoming and uncomplicated.
- 5/5
Ordered coffee next morning, it was there in 10 minutes. Everything about the stay was terrific. It was a little pricey but well worth it. Great location.
- 5/5
Great, consistent service. The staff is excellent. Nice location
- 3/5
heating was not on either in the room or the bathroom and so the room was very cold. Took an hour of very noisy heaters to get it to regular temperature. The curtains in the room were ripped. We reported this to 2 separate people and nothing was done about it. We asked for a kettle and tea making tray - we had to pay USD30 for this and there was no instant coffee provided. The room service breakfast card that you hang on the door had no prices on it except for the delivery charge. The concierge was very helpful and generally the staff were of a good standard but basically working in a hotel which needs a big overall. Decoration shoddy in most of the communal areas and the furniture worn and in urgent need of replacement. Felt like staying in my dead grandma's house. Hot water and shower pressure were good - which I needed to use to warm up. Spa was outrageously priced USD240 per person for a massage - wow. Great location but the hotel doesn't live up to even half of the brand name - PA in Paris is arguably the best one in that city - this is a very poor imitation. Would not recommend to anyone who is used to 5 star standards.
- 5/5
Excellent location near many restaurants in central park. The staff were very gracious. This was our first time staying, but we wanted walking access to New York Hospital. The deluxe room was very nicely appointed, the king bed comfortable, the furniture old French style. The bathroom had recently been renovated and was beautiful. Room service was also very good.
- 5/5
We also had a glass of wine in the bar and the gentleman there was very attentive and pleasant.
- 1/5
This booking was made fraudently. Neither Hotels.com nor the hotel have been any help in resolving the issue or issuing a credit. Screw hotels.com and this hotel.
- 5/5
This is our favorite Manhattan hotel! The is service excellent, the location is quiet yet convenient, the rooms and lobby are lovely and the staff is delightful. We love the bar as well. We will always go back to this hotel whenever we visit NY.

Thank you!

My three night stay was
- 5/5
Great location. Huge bathroom for NYC. Big room. Great sheets and pillows. Door men were terrific- went out of their way to be helpful and actually remembered us.
- 4/5
Nice quiet residential feel yet easy walk to Central Park or fifth avenue. Very comfortable beds and cleaning staff was perfect. I could not stand shower curtain and our rooms were small but nice. Could use updating but overall very charming place.
- 5/5
Service is 5 stars. Hotel is lovely, comfortable and welcoming. Excellent. We will go again.
- 5/5
Fabulous location. Close to shopping and all the sites of new york within walking distance. Top notch
- 5/5
Great hotel on the Upper east side. Perfect location for shopping and the park. We were upgraded to a suite and it was quite the treat for my teenage daughters and I. We would definitely stay here again! Happy holidays!
- 4/5
The property looks slightly used and should be updated.
- 5/5
Especially loved the bedding, the staff and the bar are. Very warm and friendly
- 5/5
The Plaza Athenee is a terrific hotel, with friendly and attentive staff
- 5/5
Oh my goodness love this quaint hotel. Everyone went above and beyond in making us welcomed and attending to our needs. We TOTALLY enjoyed our stay.
- 4/5
a $78.00 charge.
- 4/5
Needs refurbishing Still a very classy hotel. Would stay again hopefully in a nicer room
- 5/5
Great property, gracious and helpful staff...a wonderful weekend
- 5/5
Very nice hotel. Excellent location. Very quiet. Beautifully appointed.
- 5/5
One of my favorite hotel in NYC.
- 5/5
Ideally situated in Upper East Side and easy walk to Central Park and surrounding areas!
- 4/5
Ambience was good. Gym could be improved. Staff were helpful and on hand. Good location in mid-town and central to shopping and Central Park but the room I had had a poor view of house tops.
- 4/5
Very pleasant...the only thing was the TV was outdated and unreliable
- 2/5
Building is old and if you get a regular room you will have the worst view. Too much money and very old hotel rooms. Need upgrades.
- 4/5
We liked the old world charm of the hotel. However, it is tired and needs some maintenance.
- 5/5
excellent service, very friendly people, beautiful bar, large room, comfortable bed, perfect location
- 5/5
Great place. Brought my French bulldog. Will return.
- 5/5
The hotel was very classy New York intimate personal restaurant was very good just very accommodating would stay there again great great location
- 5/5
But bed needed to change
- 2/5
Bland hotel. It seriously needs a make over in the rooms. Maybe a coffee machine in the room?
- 5/5
Would not consider staying anywhere else. Exemplary quality.
- 5/5
Lovely check in, they saw it was my birthday and surprised me with cake and wine in my room. Hotel is older but class never goes out of style. Service is classic NY, what top service should be. Again, older hotel but a league above many others I use on Hotels.com. I will definitely be back.
- 5/5
It was our second stay, but not the last Room very clean. Quiet.
- 5/5
Everything! Staff, dining, room, room service were all superb.
- 3/5
The toilet leaked and the flush was not consistent They tried to fix them but weren’t successful The night staff were pleasant but when we asked for room service they struggled as the night manager seemed to have a number of jobs. The hotel was on a perfect position but the service wasn’t good enough
- 5/5
Intimate and beautiful public rooms. Clean, well-appointed guest rooms. Of course, a fabulous location.
- 3/5
Was disappointed.
- 4/5
The location is wonderful and the staff were terrific. The room was a little tired.
- 5/5
This was by far my favorite NYC hotel experience after many years of business and pleasure travel there. The kindest most sincere people are staff here. Our room was perfectly appointed, classic, spacious. Super comfortable bed and linens. It was a daily delight during our 6 day stay to be greeted by concierge and bellman and doormen. Plaza Athenee feels like what a hotel experience should be. Don’t change a thing; old world, luxury New York lives here.
- 4/5
good service. Rooms are a little old but it is stll nice.
- 5/5
Finally found a fabulous hotel at an appropriate price i n NYC. Every aspect was excellent. Service. Rooms. Parking. All services
- 4/5
The food in the dining room was very disappointing and expensive.
- 5/5
I didn't realize that Sunday night is a busy time to fly out of NY and when I realized that I was in danger of missing my flight, the concierge staff were so helpful. In particular, while I was running to the taxi waiting at the street corner (because one way streets were blocked!!!) a staff member of the hotel pushed my suitcase beyond the property of the hotel to help me load it into the cab. Wow!
- 5/5
What a lovely gem in a busy city! 64th Street is a quiet street in an upscale residential neighborhood. It’s very convenient to all the sights, Central Park, etc. we loved the restaurant/bar. The breakfast area is so beautiful with a fresco ceiling, etc. we will definitely stay here again!
- 5/5
Hotel is a class act. Excellent staff, they can’t do enough for you.
- 5/5
We came to NYC for medical appointments and
- 2/5
Excellent location and very friendly and helpful staff. But absolutely not a 5-star hotel. We understand that parts of the hotel have been renovated, but the room we were assigned was woefully dated with fixtures and fittings at least 25 years old, including polyester shower curtain that wraps itself around you (and every other guest) when showering, 1980s faucets and bath/shower combination, and carpeting and furnishings that were battered, stained, dilapidated and quite simply unacceptable in 2019. Very deceptive as Expedia photos show renovated, properly appointed rooms that are nothing like what we actually received having booked the most expensive room option short of a suite (Grand Deluxe Salon). Extremely upsetting and disappointing.
- 4/5
Old Hotel, too expensive, definitely is not a 5 star Hotel
- 4/5
Very nice hotel and one gripe is no coffee in lobby and cost for to go cups for 2 is around $20...yikes! Continental breakfast with only 2 coffees and bread basket over $80!!!!
- 4/5
The hotel is in a great location, the staff are wonderful however having worked in hospitality for some big name brands, I'm probably a little more critical than the average traveler. Overall the small missteps did not detract from the overall experience. My only disappointment was that we were on a low floor with an awful view. We could've said something but in the end it didn't matter that much.
- 1/5
Don’t bother with Expedia and this hotel. They will fall short of expectations and do nothing about it because you booked through Expedia.
- 5/5
This is a lovely boutique Hotel near great eateries within walking distance. Breakfast at the hotel was delicious. Would definitely go back to this hotel at this location.
- 4/5
My room's air condition fan is too loud. We have to turn it off. Others are fine. There is no coffee maker in the room. Others are fine
- 3/5
Not as good as it once was....staff was pleasant....room seemed smaller than anticipated...generally fine.
- 3/5
We found a cockroach in the room and when we asked the staff to clean they cleaned the room and left the cockroach which i killed
- 5/5
Hotel staff was superb. They made the visit feel extraordinary in their friendliness and thoughtfulness, in each interaction we had. The room was lovely - upgraded to a Deluxe King. Spacious and comfortable. We would love to stay here again.
- 5/5
Room was nice, phone in bathroom was handy. Doorman was so friendly.
- 4/5
Love the boutique feel and friendliness. The property is getting a little tired, for example, the elevator is a bit worn and the carpeting.
- 5/5
Staff had many years of experience at the property
- 5/5
All staff amazingly friendly, attentive and service minded.
- 4/5
A small, old fashioned hotel with large comfortable rooms on the UES. Not chic or trendy, but the staff is welcoming and helpful, and neighborhood is very convenient.
- 4/5
Very good but Expedia said reservation was for King size bed. The Classic rooms have only small Queen size beds.
- 2/5
Service was great. But cleanliness left a lot to be desired - Blocked bathtubs (stayed in a two room suite connected to each other). Anyone taking a shower caused the water to backup in both bathtubs - not what I expected in any hotel let alone 5 star property. What’s with the lack of accessible electric sockets? Rooms need an upgrade urgently.
- 5/5
I’ve stayed at the Plaza Athene in Paris and this was just as lovely!
- 5/5
The location is amazing. Design and decor are beautiful although just slightly dated. The price was very reasonable. Service fantastic. I love this hotel.
- 2/5
Location great - room terrible and tipped bellman and he did not request ice
- 5/5
The Plaza Athénée is a gem of the Upper East Side, NYC. From the moment you arrive, you are cared for and all cares seem to vanish. Take the time to speak with Mr. Cook, the concierge, as he is delightful and extremely knowledgeable. No task is too small or too large for him. The building is well preserved, gloriously decorated if you are of a conservative mind. But it’s the people, from Angel and Co. at the door, the motherly care of the room staff and turndown service, the management that are ever engaged, waitstaff that know what you want before you do, and the army behind the scenes that make it all possible but are magically invisible. Now my number one hotel when visiting NYC. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
- 5/5
Perfect stay. Exemplifies luxury hotel. No complaints/suggestions.
- 5/5
Everything was of the highest quality. Service was quick and professional. Everything was clean, worked well, was quiet and comfortable. Would return to this hotel next time in NYC.
- 4/5
Nice hotel in a convenient location. We reserved a room with 2 double beds but upon arrival were told they did not have such a room for us but they were going to upgrade us. Luckily my best friend and I don’t mind sharing a king size bed. The upgrade was nice, the room beautiful and the service excellent.
- 5/5
Nice hotel in the heart of Manhattan. Very friendly staff, nice bar! Will stay again!
- 5/5
Angel and the other staff members were a great help to us.
- 1/5
I did not like the fact that the property highlights the roof top deck, but I was not permitted the use, apparently the room I rented was not a special VIP group. This hotel should not show the rooftop amenities, if not available to all guests; false advertising. I will not go back.
- 5/5
Very nice staff and a lovely hotel in a wonderful location
- 4/5
What I didn't like? Being told at check in that the room was not ready, then being offered a two twin beds room when I had reserved a two queen beds. Being told that the room would be ready an hour later and that I would be informed by phone. Coming back an hour later, and the room is not ready yet, and nobody had called me. Staff is "confused", "housekeeping didn't get the message", really ? And waiting another 30/40 minutes to get the key.... For what is ranked as a 5 stars hotel, it's a little light
- 5/5
great hotel, staff was exceptional
- 5/5
Nice room, very good beds. Check in a little slow, but hotel is in great location and very clean.
- 5/5
Very reliable, clean facility. Beyond accommodating staff. Highly recommend!
- 5/5
Quiet and excellent service. Low key and classy. Very happy with this hotel
- 5/5
Very nice hotel with excellent service
- 5/5
SO SPECIAL...WONDERFUL HOTEL.
- 2/5
Thought I would be having a higher end old world charm experiences, but just felt stodgy and out of date. Service was also really not good. Would not go back. Disappointing.
- 5/5
The difference, this hotel staff wants to know you as a person and treat you to exceptional personal service. I never want to stay anywhere else in NYC as long as prices are reasonable.
- 2/5
Have stayed at this property a lot of times between 2001 and 2007 and returned after 12 years only to see that nothing has changed to the rooms and or hotel facilities. It's outdated and the rooms are in desperate need of an overhaul. The staff is as always the best!
- 5/5
Excellent Quiet location near everything. Staff is very professional.
- 4/5
The room was comfortable but could be improved with a less noisy air conditioner and sound proofing the pipes in the hotel. Service was very good and rooms were clean daily. We enjoyed our stay.
- 5/5
This is our favorite hotel. It’s not enormous so there’s a wonderful personal touch to the experience. The location is great and the rooms are lovely.
- 5/5
Beautiful property in a great location. Personable, accommodating staff added to our enjoyment.
- 5/5
Excellent service in lovely hotel . Very clean . Confortable bed with crisp linen. Staff most kind and helpful .
- 4/5
Great area, hotel with style, nice rooms, unfortunately quite noisy due a huge air conditioner right outside
- 3/5
The bathroom and beds are ready for renovation. The beds are so small for such big space. The matress are old and bent. Smells humid and most of the grout in the bathroom is off. It needs a complete revamp
- 5/5
Beautiful and stately. Lovely, welcoming staff. Great room with significant size and awesome bath facility. Amazing location. A gem.
- 2/5
Old and need a refresh to get up to modern standards
- 3/5
However, the room was large, had loads of closet-space and the bathroom was large and in a lot better condition. The staff was super sweet, professional and serviceminded. As a tourist only visiting for 3 days the location was perfect, close to all the great museums.
