Surfer Beach Hotel

Our room wasn’t the cleanest and the AC wasn’t that cold. No hair dryer on the whole property so bring your own! We had a great stay and would stay here again for the beach location. I would say a 3 star hotel is about right in the rating!

Location is awesome. So nice to be able to walk right out to the beach and coffee shops, restaurants. The pool was refreshing. Would stay again.

Ocean view room was wonderful. The sound of the ocean was great. There was a little problem with the parking. I received a ticket, but then it was cleared. The hotel has 3rd party handling the parking. Everything was great. Would do it again, next year.

The hotel key doesn't work very well takes me 2 or 3 swipes to get the door unlocked. Also, not sure if it's the beach location but the wifi was slow. The location was great, the bed was comfy and the little ac unit work really well.

The proximity to the beach, the restaurant next door (World Famous), and the ease of walking to restaurants and bar on the beachfront were top reasons we loved it.

We just love this place and have stayed here several times. It has a retro feel that fits right in with the vibe at Pacific Beach. Great location right on the beach, nicest staff ever and amazing views. The remodeled rooms are nice and clean. A few tips: Don't bring a car if you don't need one - parking is expensive and Lyft is cheaper. We were able to borrow a few beach chairs and an umbrella from a bin near the pool full of left behind items. One suggestion to the management - put a broom and dustpan in each room. It's a small investment and things get sandy at the beach! Highly recommend this place.

Room was great for what we needed. Very loud on the east facing side due to Flamingo Deck Restaurant music until about midnight. Staff were great, room was clean, beach front property you can’t beat in price. Would stay again!

The staff is absolutely amazing and so friendly. The hotel is nice and I’d stay there again. The reason for 4-stars? I paid for an oceanfront room with a full ocean view but the room actually has 1/2 the ocean cut off due to how the hotel was built. So it’s only a partial ocean view and I think they need to change that room description to match something more accurate.

Nothing In my experience, traveling with my family was awful, not worth it. The hotel is very old, the mattress is uncomfortable. The cleanliness of the common areas was very poor. We saw a cockroach in the common area, near the entrance to the room. The lighting in the stairwell area was poor. The staff was inattentive to us. Parking is expensive. There is free parking in front of the hotel, and when I found out, I requested a refund immediately. The refund took more than 10 days and only happened because I opened a case with Booking (I called several times and it wasn't resolved). It was the first hotel on a trip through California, and this was by far the worst hotel I've stayed in in recent years. It wasn't worth the cost-benefit. There are much better places to stay with family in the area, which was my case. There's a restaurant with loud music next door that was open until the early hours of the morning. That was my experience.

Disappointing beach option. Biggest pro is the location. They’ve leaned on that fact instead of providing exceptional service and comfort. Can walk to everything. But, parking in their own lot is expensive. Some remodeled rooms but not the showers. Workers make you jump through hoops for extra towels. You must specifically request to have your room cleaned or they just don’t do it. 1 small ice machine for entire property. They charge a premium for a lacking stay

A/c in the room barely came on, and when it did it was every 30 mins. Room floor was dirty along the baseboards. Old hotel but right in the beach. Parking cost 180.00 for 4 night at the hotel.

The property was old but I like the location and it was clean. There wasnt a microwave in the room just in the common area.

The location and the staff were great. The bathroom was not clean, there was some sort of spatter on the walls. Then we were out of hot water for two days with no explanation and barely an apology.

The front desk staff was amazing at check-in. The guys were helpful, friendly and fun. The check out staff was just as helpful, offered to keep my bags while I spent the day seeing some sites before flying home.

I would prefer to spend more and go somewhere the rooms are not updated with the cheapest finishes at home depot. They cut costs by doing turn down and housekeeping by request. No Iron, ironing board, or blow dryer in the room unless you request it. If you are looking for a cheap room on the beach, this is a great place. It’s pretty clean and maintained decent, It’s value hotel, you are getting a lot for what you pay especially considering the location. It’s just not for me.

The location honestly could not be better. You’re literally steps from Pacific Beach with the ocean right outside your door. Having both Woody’s Breakfast and Burgers and World Famous right out front made the trip even better. One of the biggest surprises was how affordable it was for being this close to the beach and in the middle of everything. But what really made the stay stand out was the staff. Every single person we interacted with was genuinely kind, welcoming, and helpful the entire visit. If you want a laid-back beach stay with an unbeatable location without spending a fortune, this is such a good spot. ☀️🌴

How close it is to World Famous and Woody's for breakfast. Great location. The view from our room. Takes a while for the shower to heat up especially in 315. The valve is backwards as well. Also the portable a/c unit is quite noisy it over take the sound of the ocean.

Overall the stay was very nice. That staff was beyond kind and they even gave us a free room upgrade with a n ocean view. My only concern was there was a very dirty shower head and there was a very light yellow stain on the sheets. I didn’t see it until morning as it was dark when we checked in. Other than that there were no issues and I really enjoyed my stay.

Its a basic hotel but its location is fantastic! And the staff 5 star quality and amind the best service i have ever had. I would 100 percent recommend this hotel to family and friends.

Stayed here before and would stay here again. Rooms have been renovated so big plus there and you get discounts on rentals at Pacific Beach Surf Shop which is a bonus. Great location and lots to see and do right out front of the property and on the boardwalk

Location, location! Beautiful views. Staff was amazing, especially Alex at the front desk and housekeeping. We had a great time. The sofabed was very uncomfortable for my kids. That was the only complain I have.

The hotel is within easy walking distance of plenty of restaurants and bars, which made everything super convenient. The on-site restaurant is excellent, and I’d also highly recommend trying Woody’s Cafe right next door. This wasn’t my first stay here, and it definitely won’t be my last. I’ll be coming back on my next trip to San Diego.

Location! Can’t be beat! The hotel is steps away from the sand and several places to eat and grab a coffee. The staff was friendly and accommodating when we asked for more towels. There was a portable AC unit in the room which was much appreciated at night. It was loud but perfect for white noise for sleeping. The only con was paying almost $40 a night for parking. There is some free street parking close by but finding an empty spot is quite a feat, but I will definitely stay here again.

Pool under construction! Email said until May 1. On day of arrival informed extended to the 8th! I had the junior suite w balcony overlooking the pool...ocean view! Saturday morning 8am 7 guys in the pool ...,ruining my balcony experience! No hot water in the shower! Great location but that's about it!

The location was great and right next to the vibrant Pacific Beach area! The staff were super kind and rooms were clean. I would go back for another stay!

The location was extremely convenient, close to everything and right by the beach. However, on our first morning, they started doing construction work on the pool at 8:00am. The workers starting talking extremely loudly around 7:30am right behind our room, and the place became a construction zone for several hours. Management shouldn't have scheduled that type of work at 8am. And they didn't even warn us.

Location was perfect San Diego Trip April 2026. Room 414 I paid for an upgrade because it was available. I arrived early to the hotel. No hot water in the shower(tried to fix but it didn’t stay hot) The water in the bathroom was hotter than the shower. No iron/ironing board Screen to balcony doesn’t close and lock Coffee maker dirty Freezer needs to be defrosted Better lighting at night around the elevator Room needs a chair Room needs carpet/throw rugs

The Surfer has a fantastic location! It was decorated spartan to say the least. Definitely a "no frills" place with a great view. Aidin at the front desk was very helpful and the best desk person I've ever met in making suggestions and being accommodating. Price is steep for what it is, but again, you're on the beach in San Diego!

The location and staff makes this hotel stand out! Right off the boardwalk, walkable to downtown Pacific Beach night life and food or go the other direction for endless beach access. It is an older hotel in structure and room style, with very basic amenities, but clean and extremely sound proof! We would definitely stay again. Thank you Surfer Beach for a wonderful vacation!!

The hotel was under major construction in the pool area. The pool was empty and unavailable plus it was dusty feom the construction. The rooms were dated and need upgrading.

Check in was awsome. Elijah and Abdi were great they helped with getting the parking pass and gave us a map of where to eat. The beach was literally 10 steps away. The view was amazing!!!! Anna did our check out and she was also great she gave us some tips for our next stay!!! Our room was remodeled, it was clean and the bed was comfy. The only thing missing was a box of kleenex. I received a text asking if we needed anything so I asked for towels and they were there when came back from site seeing. The Sufer Beach is the perfect location to see all things San Diego I will definitely stay again.✌️

Stay away!!! room $607 for what inside of the room looks rundown. I guarantee you that every single room in this hotel is this exact way. The pool was under construction the “” ocean view you can see maybe 5 feet of ocean the elevator looks to be a house for rats.! the only thing positive about this place was the front desk lady that she was very nice other than that no luxury in this hotel whatsoever paying $600 for you to have a nice ocean view in a 1920s single apartment the shower was disgusting

The rooms we had were extremely noisy. There was a bar/club located across the parking lot that remained open until 2:00 AM, and the music noise levels made it impossible to sleep. In addition, the air conditioning unit in the room was excessively loud and disruptive. The staff should have warned a about this. My room smelled of mold. The a/c vent was filthy and I had to have maintenance clean it. Yes it was that bad. The a/c also made a ridiculously high-pitched whistle that surprisingly could be heard over the already aircraft engine noise level it made. The location is great but not that great. Stay somewhere else and walk or Uber to Mission/PB area DO NOT STAY HERE!

Super staff and great location! The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. We would definitely stay again, but would request a room on the 4th floor. The guests above us were very loud several mornings between 3:30-4:30 A.M.

The staff is kind and friendly. Front desk was super helpful. Our first room had a leaking sink, so we were upgraded to an ocean front room. The desk wiggled and was clearly unstable. The shower is so low that I re-injured my back. It is nice to be ocean front, but the price is not reflective of the hotel.

The Surfer Hotel is the perfect location right on Pacific Beach! If your not looking for fancy and just want a decent, clean place to stay, this is it! Close to everything, World Famous Restaurant 5 steps away and the Boardwalk 7!! Only issue was the there was no hot water the first two days.

Excellent location on the beach and walkable. The restaurant was great. Staff was helpful. Rooms have been updated but we ran into a few issues. We only stayed 2 nights, and I believe our room was a wheelchair accessible room (not by request). Unfortunately this meant the shower head was mounted on the wall, waste high. It was removable and hand-held but was inconvenient and not ideal. The extra sink in room was a nice feature but due to the way it was plumbed, it back up and black stuff came out of drain any time it was used. If we had stayed longer, would have requested another room but it served our purpose.

I will stay here again. Great access to the beach.

The location is really nice. It’s right on the boardwalk and close to so many stores, restaurants and bars. The “World Famous” restaurant is attached to the motel and the food was top notch. We ate there twice. As far as motel conditions, it was below what I’m used to. Housekeeping didn’t check on us, at all, for the 3 nights we stayed. The shower curtain rod was broken. The chair in our room was about to break. Didn’t dare to sit in it. No microwave in our room, but our other 2 friends did. Our AC was fine, but those other rooms had the AC unit right by the head of the bed. They complained it was extremely noisy. Overall, the location and price are the draw. If you’re not picky, this place is for you.

Great location - but the hot water went out, but staff credited us $100

This is a very old building, shower is very small, the walkways are lined with carpet and is very outdated. inside the room the beds were very comfy the AC unit is a big thing that is pretty loud there is a small fridge the tv internet kept going in and out so the first night we coudnt watch anything but it was on the beach pretty much and attached to a restraunt which was convenient.

Everyone here was so kind and accommodating. We are from AZ & booked this room last minute after deciding to stay in SoCal after our Disney trip at the beginning of the week. We are always in PB and have never stayed here and have been missing out! It is literally right on the boardwalk, our room overlooked the ocean and all we had to do was step outside the door to be at the beach. The staff was sweet, there is a cool restaurant next door, everything you could want in PB is walkable and we were always able to find parking with no issue which is a huge plus. We had our 11 month old daughter with us and for just us three it was perfect - would love to be back soon!

I will say i did not pay for the amenities when i came here, I paid for the view of the Ocean and the ability to fall asleep while listening to the ocean waves. The beds were comfortable and the staff was exceptional. The location is perfect because it's near everything and i was able to walk everywhere. I am planning on another trip in June and i will staying here requesting the ocean view rooms. we stayed in the room with 2 beds and a pull out sofa and the Ocean was right in front of us for the most epic views for sunset and sunrise. DEFINATELY recommnend if your an ocean person.

First, the mattresses were very uncomfortable, which made it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. This is one of the most important parts of any hotel stay, and unfortunately it fell short. Additionally, the parking area appears to have been recently redone with smaller spaces. It was extremely difficult to get in and out of the car, and maneuvering in the lot was frustrating and inconvenient. I also noticed that the suites did not have drinking glasses available, which is a basic amenity most guests expect. It was a small detail, but it contributed to the overall feeling that the accommodations were not as well-equipped as they could be. On a positive note, the location is absolutely perfect. It’s close to everything you’d want, and that was definitely the highlight of the stay. With improvements to the mattresses, parking layout, and suite amenities, this hotel could provide a much better guest experience. As it stands, the excellent location is the strongest feature.

The staff was really nice and helpful. The room was in a great location. The room itself was just okay. Decent for the price. Definitely could use come paint and extra cleaning (doors, lamps, walls dirty). Furniture was old and outdated. I might stay again if I absolutely had to for the price.

I was on the first floor, and the noise from the residents walking around upstairs was unbearable, along with the noise from the airplanes. It was like living below a bowling alley. We couldn't take it, so we left a day early. Management said they wouldn't give us a partial refund because we booked through Expedia, so we I just ate the extra night and left.

The room was perfect with the most amazing ocean view. 🌊 The rooms were clean, the beds were super comfortable, and while the pillows weren’t our favorite, they were definitely manageable. We were met by very friendly staff and the location is superb. The room was clean and tidy, with the needed amenities. The access to the waterfront boardwalk was such a perk, and there is a great breakfast place just out the door. Ocean views, the roar of the waves and incredible access make this a great location. The only thing that was laughable, and annoying, is the size of the shower. The water pressure is good, but the stand up shower was incredibly small, and the shower head was placed at just over 5 feet tall. This setup makes it uncomfortable and frustrating for most normal sized humans.

I’ve been staying at the Surfer since I was little and this was the first time as an fault I stayed. The two men working the desk were amazing! If you’re looking for a beach front hotel with everything walking distance this is the place to stay! Also if you like going out at night definitely recommend theirs lots of clubs and places open. Found out my grandma has been taking my mom here when she was little to! The restaurant attatched is yummy and the views during the day are serene looking out at the ocean. See you soon Surfer!

This is an old hotel, refurbished rooms are still old and musky, that being said you can’t beat location. I had an ocean view with a balcony, great sunset view but you get the smells from the restaurant and everyone can see inside your room. I’m giving it an extra star because the front desk staff was great, especially Aiden. I would not recommend this hotel for a woman traveling alone.

Room was clean, staff so kind and welcoming. But the moment I opened the door to my room and saw my view, my jaw dropped and I was giddy! As a single female, I felt very safe here. Tons of food options in very close proximity. But hearing the waves and seeing them all night was amaxing. Highly recommended. But keep in mind, this is not a new hotel but one filled with charm and unbelievable views and proximity to the beach.

The view was terrific, even with the restaurant roof right in front of the room.

This is our second time staying at the Surfer Beach Hotel and had another grwat experience. We love the sentiment of this hotel as well as the convenience of it being in middle of everything like food, beach, shopping, etc. The customer service and staff here is absolutely wonderful. I havent once had an issue and i would stay here again. They also just updated the rooms so that was a nice surprise!

It was great place very clean. It seemed to have electricity issues A/C would go out several times during our 2 day stay for a few seconds at a times internet was spotty. The location however is spot on there’s many places to see & eat within walking distance.

For a $250/night price range, you would expect a clean room. The rooms are outdated, dirty mattress, and more than dirty smelly carpet with stains of god knows what everywhere. Even your socks get dirty by just walking on it!

The thing that made it an ultimate win for us was the staff. The 2 gentlemen at the desk during check-in were courteous and helpful with all of my many questions. They were also very willing to be of service if extra amenities were needed, and that stayed true for all of my interactions with the service staff. Highly recommend staying here if you have the chance, and the ocean views were great.

It was clean enough. We didn't plan to hang out in there much anyway. Staff was pleasant, Angel was really helpful. It was lovely to sleep with the slider open to hear the ocean and food/coffee all within walking distance that made up for the room. We'd probably stay there again.

I emailed and called them about traveling as a single woman and not wanting to be on the ground floor. I was on the ground floor and the floor of my room was filthy. They said they came and mopped but you couldn’t go barefoot as it was that bad. Everyone was very nice and polite though

The room was definitely clean. It was a nice little room, nothing fancy. The view and balcony was great. Staff was great at check in. It was definitely a bummer that I was charged extra money on top of my initial quote. Even in the break down of the this charge was not presented. It really cut into my spending money. Also the water pressure for the shower was extremely weak. I made it work but still. In the end the access to the beach and boardwalk saved this trip. I would recommend this place again, but with out some heads up. Thank you!

Did a 4 day solo trip to PB. Decided to stay at the Surfer Beach Hotel due to location and affordable cost. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, the room was clean and comfortabthe

Great spot , located directly on the beach , can hear the waves crashing all night!

They fail to mention that you have to pay for parking! And as you can imagine it varies depending on the day. There is public parking but good luck getting anywhere near that! I could have stayed at a resort and had parking for free and the resort fees would have been less than this parking!

No wifi access, that is what I needed as I was at a conference. Parting neighbors keep me up all night, Staff was great and room was not great at all for the price point.

The room view is too beautiful but there are a few things that the hotel definitely needed some love period but it also is getting renovated so I had the perfect trip period and we lucked out and were able to get on street parking and save 37 a night

We were able to see the ocean but the rooftop of the restaurant was part of our view. However it was very nice having a great restaurant so close and it was not noisy at all. The amenities were very basic. The bed was comfortable and the room and bedding were clean. It would have been nice to have chairs or a place to sit in the room. It was good to have a deck looking out to the ocean which a lot of the newer facilities in the area were lacking. We love to hear the sound of the ocean and it was very close to the beach, which was a priority to us.

The room was very nice and so convenient. The pool was right out our door and so was the beach.

Staff was nice. They went out of there way to get another hose so I could get the sand off my dog. The floor in the room was slippery for her though maybe would be nice to have some towel since you bring in sooo much sand from the beach.

Service was amazing they where on top of there game very helpful with places to eat and shop and took care of all our room needs.

This property is right on the beach. The location almost makes it worth it. The hotel itself is very old and run down. The shower was made for very short people. My bedding was dirty and the tv was not working well. I would still recommend if location is super important to you and your on a budget.

It is located on the beach with an amazing view. We loved falling asleep to the sound of the ocean each night.

The beach view was amazing and the staff was impeccable! The bathrooms are SMALL- tiny showers- I could not tell this from the pictures (they show bathtubs and big bathrooms) but I asked the front desk and they said the majority of the rooms have the tiny 2x3 ft showers. I just wish I had known that. The rooms were dated- but that was expected with the cheap price and date of the hotel. All in all- you can’t beat the location or price- I would stay again!

Everyone was so kind and made our stay pleasurable. The room was great and perfect for our two little boys’ first ocean experience! We will be back!

I wanted this place to be awesome. It’s not. Think old beachfront motel. Very dated property and beach access is the best part, but there is a restaurant between the motel and beach. Beds are very soft with no support causing back pain. For the price, it was a big disappointment.

Amazing view and always a great stay.

Our room on the first floor opened to the pool but we had to walk around an iron gate to actually get into the pool. This was ok. We could use of room key to go a back way to the ocean walkway. Conveniently located by many restaurants. Cons - They offered coffee but only had powdered creamer. The room was ok sized but the only drawers available were 2 in each nightstand. The shower was a very small box. My back was practically up against the wall. No place to put shampoo. etc. except on the bathroom floor outside the shower curtain. Shaving was a challenge with no way to raise my leg. Only one towel bar which was located over the toilet paper. Could only put one towel on it as the second towel would lay on the toilet paper and get it wet. There is room to put more towel bars, and they should do so. We enjoyed out stay despite the cons.

WE arrived earlier than check in but HUNTER was very accommodating and upgraded us to a room with a better view, then called us when it ready for us to get the key. He was always smiling and gracious - asking if everything was ok. He's a great host and did everything he said he would!

Location is awesome. Close to the beach and lots of food options. Room was small, but doable. Water to the entire building had to be shut off twice. I was woken up in the middle of the night to water dripping, the roof of the shower/toilet area was leaking water. Threw down towels and alerted the front desk. Upon leaving the property, we couldn't get the luggage cart through the walkway to the elevator due to cabinets sitting in the way from a neighboring room being under construction. While checking out, the front desk was very aware of all the issues, but made no offer of a discount for this stay. An offer for a discount on another stay was mentioned, but we wouldn’t stay here again unfortunately.

We had a room with a partial view. It was so lovely! We could sit on the balcony and watch the water. We could hear the waves!! It’s a bit old school, but we would stay there again!! The staff was so nice and friendly. They provided more towels quickly when we asked. The walk ability to food and stores was amazing. We didn’t have to drive anywhere to eat. We actually ate at Woodys, which is right next door to the hotel. The food was fabulous. You sit on the patio and watch the ocean. Aahhhh. Loved it!!!

I liked the room even though you could tell it had been renovated. However there were a few things that could be improved. 1. There was no Kleenex in the room. 2. Although they had specialty Shampoo and Conditioner; Facial Bar & Body Bars…the soap holder didn’t have enough room to hold it all. So I had to put the Shampoo and Conditioner on the floor. 3. The person who made the bed doesn’t know how to put a duvet and duvet cover on the bed!!! They put the opening of the duvet at the top/head of the bed. It should be at the foot of the bed so that the duvet can be pulled up in one piece. The open end should be tucked in at the bottom of the bed. 4. The room had a fairly nice view of the beach except for the roof of the restaurant.

This experience was terrible. The place is old smells set not sanitary looked like a crack hotel. The staff was nice but that was the only thing nice about it. Good location but the place is horrible. I looked at the Room left and rented a room down the street at a clean hotel at a Marriott

Dislikes: the hotel is quite outdated and was under renovation during our stay. It is giving motel vs. hotel vibes. Parking is expensive ($37.50/day) unless you find parking on the street but even then, you have 72 hrs. parking is free but after that time, you need to move your car.

Love the view and it's right on the beach. A good part of our vacation was enjoying mornings on the balcony with the ocean in the background.

I felt that the floor and carpet were sandy and there was a dirty band aid on the floor when I came into the room. But the bed was clean and very very comfy..

Surfer Beach Hotel was literally embedded in the restaurants and shopping of Pacific Beach. We were steps away from the boardwalk and waterfront without suffering excessive noise. Second pleasant surprise: we were upgraded to an ocean-view room, and early check-in without needing to ask. The room was a little dated, but very clean. Staff was super friendly and always available. Would definitely stay here again for a casual weekend getaway!

The internet almost non existent in our room. Except of proximity of the beach, really not good experience. We won’t stay there in future…

Did not look anything like the pictures. Very disappointing. They are remodeling but our room certainly wasn’t. We’ve been on cruise ships with bigger showers. Bad layout in general. However they were very nice when we decided to change hotels and refunded us without charging us a cancellation fee.

I picked this place because it had decent reviews and well priced. I will say being right off the beach was nice. Being close to the bars could be appealing to the right person. But the rooms are small! I am 5 foot 3 inches and I was taller then the shower heads. The beds and pillows were terrible. The carpet was moist and very dated. This place definitely needs a update. The rooms have window AC and you have to stand on the bed to control it. We made our stay work but I probably will not stay again or recommend it. The staff were very friendly and very helpful and the restaurant was very good. So not the worst place just not the best either.

This hotel is ideally located on the beach. Staff was very attentive and took care of all our issues. However, the hotel is outdated and needs to be updated. When we checked in the room had sand all over the floor and the door to toilet would only close halfway. Amenities are minimal. Many thanks to Hunter who went out of his way to provide good service!

The restaurant below had a noisy AC that made it difficult to sleep after the first night. The first night was bliss, nothing between the sounds of the ocean and our patio screen door. Facilities as expected for the price we paid. Dining options within walking distance were phenomenal. Hoping to make this trip again but want that first night experience for the whole booking.

Property and rooms very outdated. Balcony railing was loose. 32.00 a day to park. Room was dingy and carpet was dirty. Rust on some fixtures in room. Very tiny, dark shower about the size of a phone booth. Nowhere in bathroom to place toiletries. Very loud. This was supposed to be a full ocean view but this was a partial ocean view. My grandkids did enjoy the pool. I would not stay here again for the price.

We booked a Jr suite and hotel is showing its age with worn caulking and grime in the whirlpool tub in the restroom. A plug in floor ac unit (Penguin). Bed sheets appeared to be clean, but were stiff. The box spring had no spring, just a wood frame with plywood (wood box). Great location along the Pacific Beach boardwalk though.

We always stay at this hotel when we come to San Diego and have never had any issues, this time was much different. I paid for a King Ocean View Room and what I got was a partial view of the ocean and the rooftop of a restaurant and the pool. I expressed my concerns to the staff and was told they were booked and there were no Ocean Views available. I was told they would talk to management to see what could be done and also told that when I book I should be specific and add DIRECT Ocean View to make sure that is what I get?? Never had to do that before and shouldn’t need to, we all know what Ocean View means. I had a partial view. Staff did call me to tell me they would deduct $30/night but that’s all that could be done. Then our power kept going out in our room and we were only using a steamer and curling iron?? This kept happening at least 3 more times within minutes of each time they would fix it. Also the water from the shower was either too hot or too cold, it was hard to get it to a warm temp. The dresser drawers had hair in them and there were pills that were dropped behind the dresser that weren’t ours. Not sure we will stay here again, there was too many things wrong.

I stayed with my teenage son for one week and I found what I expected reading the reviews and seeing the pictures. Staff very friendly and attentive, we loved the location, the vibe of the area, the short distance to many others places to visit (easy reachable even with bus) and the people!

Beds are super small, and the carpets are disgustingly dirty. I requested to have our room vacuumed, just a vacuum after night 1 and was told 3 different times, they were in their way. Never had it done!! Definitely pay for the location, but the place is run down.

Location is a 10+. Adjacent to boardwalk and beach. World Famous restaurant was very good. Room for imply: peeling paint on shower ceiling, shower could have been cleaner and the AC filter was dirty. I would still recommend this rental property.

Very convenient for beach time and walking around for eats and treats. Staff was super helpful and kind. Swift service when I texted their personal text assistant. Perfect family getaway and we can't wait to return.

It was our fault that we didn’t call the hotel to fix it but it was annoying as well that the light was dead by the second to the last night. Overall, I would still book the hotel again but it is definitely old and they need to replace the carpet inside or repaint the room to make it feel fresh. We’re still spending about $300(ish) a night for the room so yes, I still expect some attention to details. Another pro was that they allowed us to check in earlier than the expected time at no additional charges. For that, I am truly appreciative. I would rate this a 7 out of 10.

Stayed here with young children. Had a room issue and the staff promptly resolved the concern. Perfect location for a family beach vacation.

As far as the room goes, however, other than the very tiny shower, was comfortable. We ate at the World Famous Restaurant our first night there and breakfast the next two mornings. The food and service was excellent. Prices a little above average, but because the food was so good, it didn't really matter. All in all my husband and I enjoyed celebrating our 48th wedding anniversary along the beach area and staying at the Surfer Beach Hotel. Access from the hotel to various San Diego attractions was fairly easy. The little shops and small outdoor eating areas along Pacific Beach were really nice and fully accessible from Surfer Beach Hotel.

Did not care for the parking situation.

The pillows hardly had anything in them, that’s why I had to call for more. Parking spots are a joke, can hardly get in and out of the car without hitting the car next to you. My family members also booked a room and it had no air, it was broken! The pictures looked ok online, better then in person. I know they can not control the environment surrounding the area but there was drunk people laying on the sidewalk and we went out to the beach at night right in front of the hotel with children some young, and people came within about 15 feet from us and started having intercourse! There went our family night out looking for shells. I wish I would have booked somewhere else, can’t believe I spent over 2,000 ( including parking) on this place. Extremely disappointed and at some point disgusted.

The staff were kind and held my bags until check-in. The room was dirty. The floors felt grimy and like they needed carpet shampooing. There was coffee on the walls near the bathroom. The bathroom floor wasn’t clean, nor was the shower. I dropped my earring backing on the floor and when I went to look for it, found things on the floor that didn’t come from me

The hotel is very sketchy. The one thing that bothered me the most is the parking situation. They do not own the parking lot and you need to pay for parking when you get there. I still received a ticket and had to dispute which was just taking time from my day. The beach is close by which is the only good thing about the property along with the staff.

I booked this after the Pacific View Inn was a complete disappointment. The staff here was amazing and the hotel is perfect for a beach front vacation.

Most was okay but parking for guests $37.50 a day is not good park in the street for one like they told me and got a parking ticket for $85.00 that’s not a customer care

The pool is only open until 8 pm, which seems very early, especially for people traveling with families. Hotel offers housekeeping, but only upon request. Location is good. It seems as if the location is what you are paying for, as this hotel is pretty rundown. The pictures on hotels.com are not a true representation of the room you are getting.

Our stay was nice, the only downside is that is AC is super loud and the TV channels are very limited. I know that I am not there to watch TV, but at night after being at the beach all day, it would have been nice to watch TV with channels worth watching. The wifi also sucks (at least from our first floor room).

Excellent customer service! Cant emphasize on that more. You’re in great hands! Comfy room. Great view. Everything and anything you need in there or it walking distance. Great for all ages. The only thing is the carpet. Leaves your feet a wee bit dusty. I just wore inside shoes, no biggie. This will be a pinned destination spot for future visits!

It’s a basic old Cal beach hotel that has seen its share of beach wear and tear, but it’s exactly what it claims to be and nothing pretentious. Pricey yes but it’s the cheapest option in the area and it’s the San Diego cost.

The location of the hotel was good right by the beach, I would have liked a better view from our room of the ocean. The pillows were all lumpy and the carpet looked dirty. The staff was very nice and helpful to ours needs. Overall the stay was average.

The location is awesome! The staff was great! To walk out right to a beach was seriously the best. It was a simple aged building, but well taken care of. Parking was pricey but i understood why, its in a popular location.

Nice location older hotel

Beautiful. Right on the beach, with lots of shops and restaurants nearby. We rollerbladed, surfed, and visited the zoo. It was amazing and the service was exceptional.

This is our second stay at this hotel. What you're paying for here is literally the location. Although it's not a five-star hotel it's nice enough. I mean really who spends that much time in their room when they're literally, right on the beach? I will be staying here again! We stayed here last year and again about a week ago and we've decided that this is our spot, again it's because of the location. It's an older hotel but it's clean and it serves its purpose. The staff is very friendly and always ready to be helpful in any way they can be, so this is also a plus!

Great location but the hotel itself was a bit shabby. We had to change rooms because they gave us the only room without a balcony/patio plus the tub needed repair. The “heated” pool was pretty chilly (I’d guess 70-75 degrees max). The staff were all very pleasant and helpful.

2 issues to note is that a fan on the roof of a nearby restaurant was squeaking for two days, which required us to keep our balcony door shut to keep the noise down and the next evening I got stuck in their 1 and only elevator for about 20-30 minutes and had to call maintenance to get me out. They were apologetic, but the elevator was inoperable that night and the following day.

Good location, right on the beach. But this hotel is very old and not kept up. Stained carpet, dent in the wall, no pictures or anything hung in the room, felt more like a motel. Disappointed!

It was an okay stay. Loved being on the beach. Very outdated and cobbled together. Our room had an odor that an air freshener couldn’t even help. The air conditioning units were the in-room ones and had a hard time keeping up, very bulky in the room. It was nice having a refrigerator and microwave in the room. No hair dryers. The door to our room was very hard to close so it required slamming. There was a gap in the bottom of the door that I had to stuff with paper towels hoping to keep critters out- at least a 2” x 2” hole.

Overall a nice area, though the hotel left something to be desired.

Perfect location but very basic hotel. The pictures on Expedia are much better than reality!

We have stayed at this property over 5 times and we will never stay again. We were on the bottom floor this time which wasn’t a big deal until we got into the room. The room was so run down, the ac unit had a tube coming out of the wall that did not cool the room down at all, it beeped 6 times every 20 mins, and the TV has 20 channels and only 3 worked. For the amount of money per night they charge for this property there needs to be changes. Very very disappointed, unfortunately this will be the last time we stay at the Surfer Beach Hotel.

Our shower never really got hot when we used it. I mentioned it to the front desk guy upon checkout and he said “that room the hot cold are backwards”. I tried everything to get hot water and nothing worked. It was miserable because it was so cold outside. There was black mold on the ceiling of the shower as well. The rooms need repairs. I’ve stayed multiple times throughout the years and nothing has been updated. I will pay the extra money next time and stay at the Wayfarer moving forward.

Hotel itself was fine. A place to lay your head. This hotel’s appeal is all about the location. It’s right on the beach, with great little restaurants right outside your door.

The reason we chose this hotel is convenience. It is right on the beach and walking distance to a lot of good food and shop options. But, the cleanliness and how poor shape this was in was bad. For almost $300 a night, I should have walked an extra two blocks to have decent stay. The doors hardly open half the time, if you open your balcony door to see the ocean, you get a whiff of the grease pit that is on top of the connected restaurant, and it’s just got gross vibes, the furniture looked so bad, like the stuff your grandparents take to good will and it just sits there for years in a humid climate. it didn’t open well, and the carpet:, barf. I get that you have to clean a LOT of sand when you are right off the beach, but some upgrades will go a long way in making guests feel comfortable. I didn’t even take a photo of the room, and I wish I had. The paint peeling, the filthy light switches, and doors, the dilapidated furniture. I took Clorox wipes to everything and seeing the result of that, it just added to my growing uneasiness. Again, the convenience was great, and if that is all you are looking for then you will be fine here.

We loved our room. The balcony was perfect to enjoy the ocean. The desk staff were outstanding, very friendly and helpful. It is an older hotel and needs some up lifting In the bathroom area.

For the price: Great location, friendly service, lovely water view. Older building in good shape, clean. Would definitely return.

The Hotel itself could use some updating for sure. But if you are ok with clean but old then this is your place. The location, the views and the restaurant attached to the hotel are excellent!!

Location of the hotel is fantastic. No resemblance to the posted pictures. Outdated, parking is over $37.5 a day.

I got two room one for me and the wife and one for the three adult children. I got the mini suite white was like a motel 6 room. I’ve had nicer motel 6 rooms. The small rooms shower was too small for the kids they had to use our bathroom which was also small. Staff were nice and friendly and the location is awesome right on the beach. The restaurant had great food and good service. I won’t stay there again. Much nicer choices available in the area. I was a little embarrassed when I saw the kids room.

The staff was amazing, the view was incredible, and the restaurants in the area were seriously delicious! I ate at Woody’s every day and was never disappointed. I will absolutely be coming back as soon as I can.

We loved the proximity to the beach. We were right by the pool but still found the property to be very quiet at night. The bathroom was a little musty smelling but overall a very convenient place to stay.

Dirty, nasty, would never stay again. The only good thing about this hotel is the location and the restaurant next-door. It was filthy and I didn't even want to get into the bed. And it's expensive too, not like an economy hotel. Too bad because the location is amazing.

Cons: * Parking Cost: The price for parking was considered high, especially for a car that would mostly be stationary. * Noise from Balcony: A significant issue was the constant noise from what you believe was a large AC unit on the roof, which made it difficult to hear the ocean waves from the balcony.

The location and view was amazing. The place was clean. The staff was super nice, considerate and went above and beyond to make sure our stay was pleasant. The pool was immaculate. But the hotel needed a little updating. We would definitely stay there again!

Great location for the price! My ocean room view was amazing - left my slider door open all night to listen to the waves! Walk next door to Woodys for great breakfast, etc! Walk a few minutes more to beach bar for drinks & fish tacos!

My wife and I loved our stay. The hotel staff was super nice and friendly. Dog friendly. Great restaurants nearby especially World Famous downstairs. Walkability. We will be back!

Great beach property. It is older but know it going in. The staff is great. Very helpful. Perfect location. Small pool area. Easy to walk up and down the beach. I will stay here again.

I’ve stayed at this hotel just about once a year for the last 20 years and it is not what it used to be. It’s extremely noisy and not at all aimed toward family stays. I won’t be staying here again, which is very disappointing.

ima start off with there is alot of bad review but i like to say that i had the best stay. Room was decent but the beach right in front was the best . food is everywhere that you can walk to. staff was wonderful and nice.

This property is on such a beautiful location but is highly over priced we paid 182.00 bucks for 1 night. The rooms are dark and gloomy, old amenities, no updates, very small and stuffy, the rest room and shower is tiny. Also they have different fees when you check in 20 dollars just for taxes, 37.50 per night parking or you have to wait for someone to pull out of a free space while the location is on the beach which means it's very busy and you have to do that everytime you leave the property also a 50 dollar per day deposit or a 200 dollar cash deposit per day which is not listed on the site at all for per day.The beds are extremely old and uncomfortable, the decor is frightening! They also have old lighting and everything else, the sink clogs up quickly, it takes a while for the shower to just heat up to shower as well as the sink, the toilet clogged up a few times. When we checked in I asked for a King suite upgrade as seeing they were empty on every site known to man kind and they said they had nothing available yet offered to switch us rooms to the next door of same size with the same problems I'm sure. Hands down worst stay I have out of 25 states! Also someone spilled a lot of water in the elevator, i fell in it. The best process was customer service at checkout because we did run from this nightmare but he was amazing gave us a refund for the remaining trip dates with no hastle thank goodness because we were out of their.Thanks to the maintenance guy and day shift gu

The property is pretty basic but it's really clean and the staff was great. I had a balcony by facing the beach which was really nice. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. Also, it was dog friendly everywhere. I would definitely go back.

Rooms are very small

The view was great, but the building has not been maintained very well. Old kind of run down and dated. No one asked to clean our room or even give us a clean towel or empty the trash in 4 nights 5 days.

Great service and location

Location is the best! Lots of walkable dining options. Microwave abd fridge were nice. They have txting system, you txt them whatever you need and they bring it up ASAP, very handy! My big complaint was lack of blowdryer, and couch and floor could have been cleaner. But when right on the beach, sand is to be expected. Beds are comfy, towels are large and thick, not cheap or overwashed. Id stay again.

When checking in we found out there was a $37 charge for parking per day which we weren’t aware of and when we tried to connect to LAZ parking it took a long time and was very inconvenient. The rooms are older, but comfortable and a beautiful view. Unfortunately, we had the people up above us being very loud late at night and early in the morning. Not impressed checking out was easiest thing we did.

The location is nice but the hotel is run down. The air conditioner was draining water onto the carpet and blowing out hot air.

Good for the price. $40 parking is extra per night unless you can find free parking elsewhere. DOES NOT TAKE TAP TO PAY. Must have physical card in your name. Great beach access and friendly staff. A little outdated and rusty, but worth it to be right on the beach. Food around the area is extremely overpriced, but there are other options close enough. Nothing fancy.

The balcony screws were barely holding on. All the hardware is rusted and feels like there is mold under all the paint.

We were celebrating a birthday and had the family suite. Spacious room wonderful ocean view. The property is old and dated.. you have to pay separately for parking in their lot. Location couldn't be better!

Location is the best part of this hotel! However it isn’t the most secure, around 2am someone came knocking on our patio door and stood there for quite some time before leaving which was rather unsettling, unsure if it was another occupant or if someone got in through the back gate as our patio led to the pool. As well as we could hear the occupants of the room next to us as clear as if they were in the room with us.

Always a delightful stay. Very family friendly one of my favorite places to go with them. The heated pool makes everything better.

It was a quaint little place but right on the ocean, just like we were looking for. It's connected to two great restaurants and plenty more within walking distance. You can hear their music from the pool and the boardwalk, which I appreciated! Our AC was really loud and they took are of it right away. I could see my family on the beach and at the pool from the balcony which was convenient as well.

From check in to check out all was a pleasant experience .. the ocean view rooms are lovely and well maintained

The mattresses are on a sheet of ply wood, no box spring. The main door did not seal shut when fully closed, the sliding glass door did not lock. The bedside lamp flickered like crazy if turned on and thats just a few problems we ran into during our two day stay. The surrounding area is okay, the bars are a little noisy. There is a parking lot but it costs $35 a day. You need to bring a sound machine for sleep, there are people that dumpster dive late at night - expect to hear bottles and cans rattling around all night. We had an extremely obstructed view of the ocean. The cleanliness I saw mentioned in other reviews was not up to par. There was a used tissue on the floor when we arrived for starters. The beds were made, no bed bugs that we saw and fresh towels were out but that’s as good as it got. There were noticeable dirt marks on the wall and door frames that wiped away with water.. safe to assign the cleaning done between stays is minimal The staff were hit or miss. Some were very polite and friendly, while others are barely approachable and inconvenienced by your existence. Overall nothing from this hotel/motel impressed us or even meet the already low standard we set. I would not recommend a stay here.

They do not clean the room every day, not even if you specifically request that they come, which kinda of bummed me out, but other then that it was nice.

The staff was friendly. It was a fun location. They didn’t offer many TV programs and the quality of the picture was pretty blurry. Overall, we would recommend it and sure stay there again.

The hotel was very run down and the condition took us by surprise. That said, we suspect you are paying for a great location because there are a ton of activities and restaurant options. Additionally, the staff was super nice and accommodating.

The room was outdated , , no tissue in the room , the shower was a hole in the wall , where the picture on my reservation showed a bathroom shower .

We called ahead to request an early check in, staff suggested coming in to do paperwork & they would be able to assist with an early check in, but could not guarantee. Followed suggestion, went & grabbed lunch & got our room a couple hours early. Room was clean & had a beautiful view. LOVED the balcony & ocean view. Staff is super helpful. Property is in a great location. Parking is great, you do pay for it. Elevator is slow. Will certainly stay here again.

Great location and price. Rooms are clean and the view from ours was lovely. Lobby is kinda grubby and the staff attitude was inconsistent (one was very nice, two others acted like we were an annoying inconvenience) but it didnt sour our trip. We will definately come back.

The Surfer Beach Hotel is older and shows its age quite a bit, however you can't find a better location for the price. The service was amazing. If we needed anything at all, they were prompt to respond and very friendly.

As directed, I texted and asked for my room to be cleaned, was told the room had been completed, and arrived back to a room that had not been swept, the bed had not been made, no surfaces wiped-only the trash was taken and fresh towels were left. When asked what happened I was informed they have two different services, basically a full clean and a bare minimum which seems to be the default unless by some magic you know to ask for a "full clean" when you ask for your room to be cleaned. There is no signage-no one texted back asking which service I wanted nothing. I swept my room myself, changed all my sheets etc. They refunded my pet fee which was nice but ultimately it just was not a great experience.

if you are lucky to have an ocean view then that's what you are basing your review on. The property itself is very convenient. It is close to many great restaurants, shops and the boardwalk. However the rooms are definitely in need of an upgrade. The bathroom had an awful damp musky smell to it. The curtains had many "suspect" stains on them...don't even want to know. However, the staff was very nice and helpful. The lock on the door broke during our stay and the maintenance staff took care of it immediately.
