The Atwood Hotel San Diego - SeaWorld/Zoo

I really had high hopes for this place. Check in was pretty easy, front desk was busy when I arrived so it took a bit longer than expected. Upon arriving into the room there was a slight odor like if someone smoked in the Nothing too crazy but noticeable. The bathroom smelled horrible like moisture and mold. Once you turned on the water in the bathroom it smelled even worse. The sink smelled like old mildew, or sitting water. The floors in the room had some sort of greasy film as if they haven’t been properly mopped in a while. The bottom of my socks were so dirty just from walking in the room. It could really use a good clean. A few of the power outlets didn’t work as well. The outside of the property was well maintained and clean though. Parking was easy, and there’s a pizza spot and liquor store so that was convenient.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. I had a short stay but definitely recommend this hotel and will be coming back again soon.

Dirty room, gross room, disgusting floors. No towels. Wouldn’t deliver them to the room when notified. Had to go get at the front desk so the staff could finish their snacks.

We reported these issues to the staff, and while they were friendly and said they would look into it and update us, we never received a follow-up during our stay. The hotel itself was comfortable, but better communication and attention to maintenance concerns would have improved the experience.

Booked a King Room several days in advance, but when I arrived at check-in, I was told none were available and was given a room with two Queen beds instead. The front desk employee was rude and acted like this was no big deal. To make matters worse, the bathroom was dirty and the towels didn’t appear clean. The hotel couldn’t honor my reservation and did nothing to make it right. Overall a very disappointing stay. I would think twice before booking this hotel.

Was a good clean place. But when they were next door cleaning we requested more towels they wouldn't give it to us right then and there we had to wait so they could order it and deliver it. We never got towel ..

Room smelled like smoke and was humid and musty, the water must have had sulfur because it smelled like rotten eggs and when I told the staff he said to just let it run for a bit like it was normal. It still smelled bad and we had to use water bottles to brush our teeth and held off on showering. Someone kept banging on our door and kept trying to come in two times finally I called front desk they apologized looks like they accidentally gave the wrong room to another party.

The room was tidy when arrived but learned that rooms are only turned over every other day. Which was fine in the end because all we really needed was towels. The rooms were renovated and my only complaint is that the sinks were made so tall. My child and mother who are barely 5ft tall had issues washing their faces and had to tip toe just to be able to rinse their mouths while brushing their teeth. That said, we enjoyed the pool and hot tub and we are glad that they were well maintained.

The pool was wonderful and it was nice to have a little convenience store on location. Upon first arrival, took off my shoes and was walking in my socks. Within 3-5 minutes the bottoms were black. The floor was filthy. I took a wet rag to it to confirm. There was a random metal piece sitting on the bathroom shelf next to the toilet paper and we didn’t know what it went too at first. After the stay, we realize it was part of the shower curtain rod holder that kept falling down. The piece of metal was there when we first got there so I’m sure maintenance knows about it. The bathrooms have no fans for the steam and are really small. They only have a window for you to open, which is very creepy considering the shady people allowed to hang around on the property and the fact that it is ground level and not safe.

Rooms were clean and comfortable. Location is great if you have a car as it is close to airport, attractions and stores. The jacuzzi was nice and warm which was very relaxing after a long day at the San Diego Zoo. You can hear people in the rooms above and next to your room as this is a motel and the walls are thin. Liquor/convenience store conveniently located right within the motel's vicinity. Only negative is our shower was leaking water from the bottom of the tub but when they cleaned our room on the second day (as they clean the room every other day), I think they might have fixed the issue as it didn't leak the next time we showered. Also the air conditioner was loud but we took it as a noise cancellation from other people making noise next door.

the appliances was falling off the wall.. the sheets had stains like blood on them.. the shower bar was falling off the wall… the refrigerator froze all of my drinks where the can of poppi exploded in the middle of the night.. it was a disaster i will not stay there again

They charged me over $600 for cleaning of there towels and sheets no damage was done to the room i paid $120 deposite they took that and charged my card $424 my account is frozen now causing me all kind of problems Becareful they will pull this scam on others I called them the manager won't talk to me

Your staff was the only reason that I didn’t stay longer. My trip to San Diego was considerably longer. My reservation was for one day, but within 15 minutes of checking in, I was looking for another hotel to stay at.

The property needs maintenance and overall update. Many details in the room due to lack of care (stains in ceiling, entrance door, etc.). A/C and hair dryer were not working. Beds were harder but are starting to feel soft. Still convenient, safe, and decent hotel compared to others in that price range.

Bathrooms smelled bad, the toilet showed years, aged and worn down ceramic. Room was a bit dingy and an old AC that made a lot of noise. This is a below average hotel paraded by Expedia as something of a hidden gem.

This is not a hotel, it is a motel that has been somewhat refurbished. Room doors open to the parking lot and let a large amount of noise through. Bathrooms have new fixtures, but old plumbing and no ventilation. Expect to keep the window open if you want anything to dry. Hotel service is once every two days, so for a four day stay like ours, that means they come exactly once. TV has no youtube or netflix, just basic cable. The bed was comfortable and there were no bugs. So, if you don't mind just staying for the night and leaving early each day to go wherever while in the city (with minimal privacy), it's ok.

The hotel was in a great location. Unfortunately there were a few things that made the stay less comfortable than anticipated. The mattress was old and sunken in the middle. The restroom door didn’t lock. The blinds do not block out very much light and there were very bright lights left on all night so the room had a bunch of bright light at night. The ice machine and water machine are in the lobby. There is also a very strong air freshener in the same location. After filling my water bottle with the ice and water, I could literally taste the air freshener in my water. It was the strangest thing.

Room was cleaned but old and worn. The pool was open but we only used the hot tub, which wasn’t hot enough and the jets were very weak. The property is clean and convenient to freeway, shopping, beaches and downtown.

Our queen room was relatively spacious, it had lovely natural light and a hillside of nisturtiums out the back window. The pool and spa were perfect and it was great having the restaurant across the parking lot, we got breakfast there in the morning. We got an amazing price for the night and had a great little staycation at the Atwood hotel!

Motel for hotel prices. Dirty, broken furniture, hair in beds, bathroom old and dirty, loud, thin walls, very uncomfortable overall. Would pay $49.99 for an emergency place to stay. Can’t believe we paid over $200 for this dirty motel.

When I arrived to the property, I was told my reservation was cancelled due to my card on filed declined and all rooms were sold out. But it shows on the app it never got canceled and now im writing a review through this page. The property manager came out to get me and notified me that they found a room available. Now the room from hotels.com was 7 dollars more than what they charged me at the property. I have stayed here before and I have never had an issue but this stay wasnt what I expected. The beds were stiffed and I had a hard time sleeping. I had ask for almost two days for towels and I didnt get towels until i asked for room service because my stay was for three days and half.Room service came by after 330pm almost 4pm but that time my family unwind and we just had to make the best out of it. I had to take out our trash and put new trash bags like I was dojng my own room service. If anyone ask for room service expect for it to be done after 330pm. I have asked for room service and it usually dont take long once I asked. The front desk staff is friendly but I feel like the could have elevated the experience by getting the amenities once I asked. I will not be returning back.

The inside of the rooms need to be upgraded the WiFi was not working & the shower was very outdated I think the owner needs to invest in upgrading the rooms! The location is excellent just needs some upgrades

Clean rooms, friendly staff, great area location, pool and hot tub are great they play the greatest variety of music! The accommodations were exceptionally clean and well-maintained. Staff members were consistently friendly and helpful throughout the stay. The location proved to be very convenient for exploring the surrounding area. Amenities such as the pool and hot tub were particularly enjoyable. The selection of music played in these areas was also a amazing!

Room was clean, spacious and room had a fridge and microwave. We had 2 rooms and one of them fridge was not working and the other one the sink in the bathroom was not draining. Pool was nice, big and clean but cold :). Jacuzzi was nice and big too. Convenient store and a nice diner like restaurant in the same parking lot.

The man who was on staff at the front desk (I'm sorry we didn't get his name) was so wonderful when my mother misplaced her credit card. After she called the desk asking if it had been found, he took the effort to watch the security camera footage to see if he could help her locate it. Turns out she left the card elsewhere, but he certainly helped us narrow down and retrace our steps. I don't know if we'll be back to the area, but if we do we'd certainly be staying there again.

Sink in bathroom was too high for a 5’ person.

Great location, lots of parking, helpful staff, infinitesimally small towels. Pet friendly, remodeled recently but my very favorite about the room is the reasonably sized fridge. Room for leftovers and full sized bottle space.

The room was clean, but I did not feel secure. My door was opened at 10pm by another person because my room had been assigned to someone else. Also, the staff called me at midnight to verify my name due to an issue with their system.

I got a text that check in was 3. I arrived a little early and the lady at the front seat was rude and unfriendly and said they are short staffed and they didn’t have any rooms ready and that check in is 330 I showered the text and she said yeah it wrong. I sat in my car for an hour watching the rooms get cleaned. I went back in at 315 and she said they would not have any rooms ready for 20 minutes and that I could sit and wait. There was another person waiting. Somehow at 330 all the rooms became clean and she was able to check 3 people in. I didn’t get the revered room type that I reserved and the tv didn’t work either. I guess you get what you pay for.

Sandra didn't know what to do - so she her manager. The manager was supposed to get right back with another option. We got tired of waiting and ended up sleeping in the car! I want a complete refund.

This was such a bad experience AGAIN there was not a working heater & it was extremely cold that night also the sink faucet in the bathroom had a trickle of water coming out no pressure at all sadly again this place did Not Meet my Needs I am very disappointed AGAIN the last time the room was infested with ants & I told the front desk & no response this last time I told the front Customer Service rep I got a generic I’m sorry no mention of a comp stay or a discount next time or anything so I think I’ll have to find another hotel to stay at

The hotel was in a great location with comfortable beds, clean rooms no bugs at a good rate. The only issue was our bathroom window leaked water when it rained. We were in room #142.

We had a handicapped room based on my husband's injury. The staff was very accommodating to our needs. The room was clean and very big. This is a very convenient location as there are nearby attractions and it is reasonably close to the airport.

The room was dark with only one lamp, the outlet by the bed didn’t work, the bathroom paint was peeling, and the shower tile was stained. It worked for a few hours of sleep, but it’s definitely not an 8.0 property. Wouldn’t stay again.

It was a pleasant stay. The restaurant and the little store made it very convenient to get a bite to eat. My tv didn’t work very well and my water pressure was stalling. But honestly I would stay here again. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The price was affordable. I enjoyed my stay. I recommend it if you need place to crash for the night.

Atwood staff: Many people are highly allergic to oils, sprays and other chemical odors! Please be cognizant in your choice of “ eco and health friendly” cleaning supplies!! However the room and upkeep excellent and comfortable.

As an inconvenience than a guest,.. It was more than rude it was unprofessional. At that point, I asked them to stop. The female clerk, replied to me that she was training him. There was no part of that conversation that was training. She then began to slam different things around on the countertop, which was followed by a 10 o’clock random call from the front desk asking to verify my name. I’ve never had the hotel front desk call me at 10 o’clock at night. I do believe it was retaliatory.

It was a perfect standard casual hotel for the night. Clean and spacious, the customer service was impeccable because they were extremely sweet and accommodating. It was in a clean, safe location and was right in back of a convenience /liquor store and cute little restaurant on the side of it. I would most definitely stay here again!

This is my second year staying at this place and it’s always been great. The restaurant and small store at the location is really convenient. The food at the restaurant is delicious and the staff there are always very welcoming and on top of it. The small store has a little bit of everything which is convenient when you forget to pack something or need a snack/drink. The rooms have always been clean and I have never had an issue with any noise or other people staying at the place. In fact, I have met some really kind people just by hanging out at the hot tub. This location is also nearby the downtown/gaslamp area/ beaches and the Uber rides are at a reasonable price. I plan to continue to stay here for the upcoming trips I have to San Diego.

I stay in Mission valley once a week and I usually stay here. Front desk is super nice and it’s a good spot and plenty of places to eat/drink near by. I know everybody has different levels of comfort for beds “ I sleep on a plush” at home so for me the bed was a bit too stiff at the hotel. Plan on staying there again next Thursday though.

Just took a few days to myself for my 50th Birthday and everything was perfect. I broke my charger and was able to get one within minutes from the store on site. Lunch was perfect at the restaurant on site. The Jacuzzi was big enough that you never felt crowded. Within walking distance there was a nice spa and a really great Italian Steakhouse. I will definitely be returning soon.

This was the second time in matter of weeks that we had a large group staying at The Atwood. The customer service was excellent. The rooms were clean and modern and the pool and hot tub were well kept.

The people at check in were really nice and helpful but the room was not clean. I got so many bites on me from something. I think they were fleas or bedbugs. Will not stay here again

A clean cost effective place for a night or two. Attached restaurant -bar-store made it one stop shopping. Convenient, Would stay again!

Was a great location close to several trips out

I needed a convenient, basic overnight stay in SD to move our daughter into San Diego State University. The old school, mid-century SoCal vibes of this place, appealed to me. It was good value for the location. It was spacious, clean, easy to find and get in and out of. Near a ton of shopping, restaurants, etc. Not a very walkable location, but you're a close drive or lyft/uber ride to anything, the universities, downtown, the beach, the malls, etc.

Great value hotel and location. Close to everything and the liquor store, pizza spot, and the waffle spot made this hotel super convenient! Didn’t use the pool area but it looked nice. Plenty of free parking that’s easy to access. Room was clean, I felt nice the floors could have been cleaner BUT overall good.

The overall room was good though the bathroom could use some updating. Like most of the small hotels on Hotel Circle you're going to have to deal with the noise on highway 8.

Had room that faced the I-8 Freeway. It was SO NOISY- got no sleep at all. The room size was average, but the room was dirty. The front door was filthy!

Love that they have a liquor store and the pool is nice!

Would recommend the Atwood. Good location, clean. The beds were comfortable but pretty high, fun watching my short wife climbing into it!! I would recommend this hotel.

The room I was initially booked in had two broken locks, a gap underneath the door the size of a chicken nugget, and it smelled of dog. This was a huge safety concern for me so I contacted the 3rd party that I booked through (Expedia). George from the front desk was understanding of my concerns. He was not only able to move me to a different room but he offered to move me from the 1st floor to the 2nd which is more secure as a woman traveling alone. The second room while the same layout was much nicer and fully functional. It even had different soap and small toiletries that the other room lacked. Was this the cleanest hotel I've stayed at, no. Was it a decent stay, yes. Although I think its important to jote that definitely more of a motel than a hotel as advertised.

We arrived the hotel at 3:30pm, but the room was not available until 4:45 pm. There was not a ventilation fan in the bathroom. We had to open the window. We were told by a receptionist that the room was cleaned every other day not every day. The bathroom sink had mold.The table legs were broken, and the chairs were metal and rusty. The quality of this hotel was very poor. It is not worth as 2 star hotel. I will not book this hotel again in the future.

It is ok nothing special

I like the security and easy access of a shared restarant and convenience store on the same property. The staff is very friendly and accomadating. I highly recommend

Just an average motel, no amenities. Definitely not a hotel as such.

Yellow stained towels, TV was broken, faucet was broken. The sound from upstairs through ceiling was so loud. Bathroom was disgusting. I was very disappointed. 7.8 hotel.com is definitely overrated. I would say 5.0 out of 10. Kudos to the understaffed front desk. But to have a sign saying “we are understaffed”, means they are not spending the required money to run a successful business. I recommend staying somewhere else. Lumpy bed, bugs in room. I could go on and on about it …

Older hotel but well maintained. The restaurant was a bit of an issue. Full bar but no bartender. The food was good though. They seemed really understaffed.

Water didn’t work and room condition is not good. Pillows are hard. Good price and convenient to hot spots

Good location. Close to attractions.

Basic motel type. Upstairs occupants tended to be a tad noisy. The hot water in the shower worked intermittently and the refrigerator froze everything. Be sure to tell the staff you didn’t use the safe or you’ll be charged $1.60 per day. The staff were pleasant and I have stayed here several times so if that tells you anything

Our stay was amazing. Everywhere we wanted to go was an uber trip away! The convenience of everything is worth another stay! Staff outstanding!

Close to beach and SeaWorld. Plenty of stores nearby. Spacious clean room with comfortable bed. Professional staff and free parking. Hotel room we stayed in needs face-lift.

Despite these shortcomings, we felt the staff was trying their best to meet our needs. It looks like this hotel has gone corporate and they are not looking to please their guests but to make money off of us. Very disappointing!

The room was not very clean and there were ants all over bathroom area. The floor felt like you were going to fall through in some areas and the fridge door did not seal to keep items cold. It was too late to get a refund and book elsewhere but would not stay here again.

The location is convenient, easy driving to anywhere in San Diego. The staff is very nice.

This place is very affordable and not far from SDSU which is why I chose to stay here. But I will not be returning. Overall it was noisy and the rooms were not very clean and pretty beat up. One of the beds had a very strong smell of cologne on the pillow and top sheets like it had not been changed over and the shower had mold around the tub and hair was in the tub on the wall. There’s not a lot of eating options that are walkable and the trolley is not close enough to walk to either if you need it. I didn’t have a car but it looked like parking was plentiful. The pool is ok, didn’t look like it had restrooms but I could be wrong. Overall, there are so many options for hotels so shop around!

Clean, nice pool area. I would stay here again for the price and being close to beaches. It was sketchy at night. A lot of homeless wandering around and a liquor store in the middle of property brought in cars with loud base thumping. I just put on my fan app on my phone to drown out all the noise. Bed was hard. Nothing bad happened to my car or our stuff so I guess it was all good. I like the easy check in and out.

A/C was broken, bedside USB port was defective, we only got one tiny bar of soap for 2 days.

This is the second time I booked this hotel for my husbands business trip. He likes it...the staff is friendly and accommodating.

A great place to stay. Easy check inn, beautiful and spacious rooms, beautiful swimming pool and free parking. Couldn't ask for better. Thanks to Sofia at the front desk she was very helpful.

The pool and common areas are pretty nice, the rooms are spacious, but the room overall feels a little old and not in the best conditions, the bed was not very comfortable

The room is spacious and acceptable but they have a problem with the water leaking in the bathrooms, we had to change 3 rooms and a on the 3rd one was the sink not usable.the sheet hat shoe prints on , i could continue one .

This was our second time staying at The Atwood. I was in town for business, but we also had time to do some sightseeing, including a visit to the zoo. I was pleased with the location—it felt safe and was conveniently close to many of San Diego’s top attractions.

We liked the proximity to the property, but everything else has not good. No clean towels, no housekeeping, and we never got clean towels.

It definitely felt like they spent some time renovating this motel. Just still felt old in the room. It served the purpose of a comfortable place to sleep.

Underperformed. The place wreaked of weed. The A/C fails to perform adequately. No vent in bathroom so the whole room is humid if you don’t open the window. We won’t return.

Water pressure was very low, hard to get any hot water from the sink. Same with the shower although hot water did flow in the shower. The sink is a bowl that sits on top of the counter and so high, at my height, 5'6" I had to stand on my tip toes to wash my face. We would not stay here again due to these issues. Should at least mop the floor when cleaning. YUK!
