Reviews
The Monte Cristo Bed and Breakfast is a charming and historic inn with a friendly and accommodating staff. Guests appreciate the comfortable beds, modern bathrooms, and delicious breakfast, but some find the rooms small and parking difficult.
- Friendly and accommodating staff
- Comfortable beds and modern bathrooms
- Small rooms
- Difficult parking
- 5/5
The neighborhood is safe with a lot of food options and corner stores nearby. If you drive here, parking is challenging but not impossible I look forward to staying here again in the future.
- 5/5
The absolute best bed & breakfast in San Francisco! Cleanest rooms, friendliest and most attentive staff, great location, most delicious breakfasts and snacks/baked goodies throughout the day. Our son graduated from USF this past Saturday and we’ve consistently stayed here. On our next trip to S.F., just to visit and explore more we’ll stay there again!
- 5/5
The room we stayed in was rather small but the bathroom was nicely finished. We needed more choices for breakfast.
- 5/5
Excellent service, wonderful amenities. You can’t go wrong staying here!
- 5/5
Secure homey great breakfast, snack drinks available 24/7
- 5/5
Yummy breakfast, friendly staff, was able to check in around 9pm
- 3/5
Nice friendly stay. My only complaint it was really warm in our room. Even after turning down the air it never cooled off
- 5/5
Great breakfast and helpful staff
- 5/5
Such a cute place, great location and lots of snacks!
- 5/5
This is an attractive and well managed bed and breakfast.
- 5/5
Homely, clean, comfortable, great location, quiet, generous tea/coffee, treats and freshly baked biscuits, excellent breakfast, lovely friendly staff . Would definitely stay there again! n/a
- 4/5
Charming hotel. Lovely helpful staff. Coffee/tea and selection of sweet or savory snacks available at all hours as well as a full egg bkft. Maintaining the original character of the location makes adding some more contemporary conveniences, like an in room mini fridge, a challenge. However, the use of the kitchen refrigerator is permissible and very helpful.
- 4/5
Pleasant experience with no hiccups. Only concern would be the mattress felt incredibly worn out with deep pockets in either side.
- 5/5
Unique Victorian Vibe
- 5/5
Easy check in and out, clean and charming
- 5/5
Cozy spot with wonderful staff. The traditional decor feels like you are in your grandmother’s house. Bathrooms are very modern with nice amenities. Continental and hot breakfast options available. There are abundant fresh baked cookies, chocolates, and other snacks available all day.
- 3/5
There should be a set of instructions for connecting with the TV. Some of us are not very tech savvy.
- 4/5
It’s an old house and you can hear people talking and walking in your room from floor above. The decor is beautiful.Breakfast is very good and the homemade cookies are the best ever!
- 5/5
Always a joy to visit. Charming, cosy and a great breakfast None
- 4/5
Very quaint, very clean, nice staff and an excellent breakfast & snacks!
- 4.5/5
Great Breakfast and wonderful atmosphere. PArking situation can be challenging.
- 5/5
Amazing friendly staff. The rooms are clean with great decor. Breakfast was great with a few options.
- 5/5
The Monte Cristo is a warm, welcoming, wonderful place to stay! We enjoyed its unique ambiance and history along with the comfortable rooms, fabulous always-available snacks, hot breakfast, and modern bathrooms. The location was perfect, within walking distance to the Presidio and not far from other San Francisco attractions. And by the way - San Francisco felt very, very safe, no matter what you hear. A gorgeous city.
- 5/5
Super comfortable and clean room! The breakfast was delicious (highly recommend the tofu scramble). The walls a thin and for the light sleepers out there, you may hear your neighbors but otherwise excellent stay.
- 5/5
Everything wonderful.
- 5/5
great!!
- 5/5
Healthy breakfast made to order, clean rooms, and friendly staff.
- 5/5
I found my new favorite place to stay in SF.
- 5/5
A wonderful gem tucked into a vibrant community. We stayed for a night to enjoy the city after work. We had a terrific pizza with an eggplant appetizer at a place 6 blocks away. The snacks in the dining room were a delightful treat. We enjoyed reading in the study. The bed was very comfortable. This place is a must stay again.
- 5/5
Breakfast was great. Staff were wonderful.
- 4/5
From the moment we arrived, we were greeted and treated as family. Made-to-order breakfasts were delicious. Treats were available in the dining room 24/7 and were wonderful. We were disappointed that there was no brewed decaf available. On our third morning, the manager brought in a coffee maker to provide us with brewed decaf coffee. Our room was small, but well-appointed. We did have issues with the temperature. With no air conditioning, the room got quite stuffy. Opening the window helped, but since we were on the ground floor, we didn't feel comfortable leaving the window open as we slept with all the traffic right outside. All in all, it was an enjoyable stay, but over $1200 for four nights still feels excessive.
- 5/5
comfortable and well maintained property.
- 5/5
The place is decorated beautifully in British early XX century style.
- 5/5
Fantastic breakfast!
- 5/5
Loved the quiet, very homey feel of this property. The breakfast was always impeccably prepared. Check in was flawless and truly very welcoming with Jack opening the door as we got out of our Uber. While the rooms were kept to take the guests back in time, everything is updated in the bathrooms including Toto Japanese style bidet. Had a wonderful time.
- 5/5
Love the vintage decor and style of the historic building. The made-to-order breakfast was phenomenal and tasty! They always had tea, coffee, and great snack options available at all hours. Not too many things to do in a walkable distance but we found it easy to walk to the Target nearby and a neighborhood bar.
- 5/5
Perfect location to explore the Presidio, Marina, Richmond district and other parts of the city. AMAZING breakfast with fabulous chef - could easily accommodate my dietary needs of vegetarian/vegan and gluten free! Had tons of extra snacks - fresh baked cookies and cakes, tea service available at all hours, and fruit and nuts! Rooms were nostalgic of a true British bed and breakfast. Friendly, and helpful staff! Street parking was easy and safe. No A/C - happened to be there during a hotter weekend. But provided a fan, which helped some!
- 5/5
The aesthetically pleasing and beautiful lay out of the room A slight smell that was off putting
- 5/5
Beautiful decor, good location, quiet, friendly and attentive staff, excellent food. Will stay again.
- 5/5
What a charming place to stay. Old charm and modern features. Fresh made breakfast every day and lot of snacks set up in the common area. Walking distance from several locations. Will definitely return.
- 5/5
Friendly service, comfortable room, delicious snacks all day and they made it as convenient as possible. Parking isn't the best, but I made due.
- 5/5
Quaint and cute but also modernized where it counts.
- 5/5
I loved everything about this B&B! The. decor is tasteful, service is attentive and mannerly, it’s quiet, there are good snacks available at all hours and the location is excellent. I’ll stay there whenever I come to visit my family. So glad I gave it a try.
- 5/5
What a lovely stay! Will be back.
- 5/5
I was 5 hours earlier then check and they were happy to find me a room. Old - but nice. Great value
- 5/5
We really enjoyed our stay, the staff and guests were all so nice! Room was really comfortable and we loved the location of the B&B, it was a quiet area but near all the things we wanted to see.
- 5/5
A very comfortable historic feel!
- 5/5
Just beware there’s a few homeless people around the area
- 4/5
Cute quaint place with old charm. Some of the random technology throughout the room, I did find odd like the Alexa home that has a camera on the nightstand, the motion detector sensor on the wall, the keyless pinpad lock for the door, and the mirror in the bathroom with the digital camera displayed, it just didn’t feel like it fit in with the rest of the place and seems a little weird to me. Not necessarily bad though. I was told when I checked in that I could request breakfast to my door as early as 7, even though the paper said 7:30. I got it around 7:20 which was disappointing because I was in a rush for work.
- 5/5
Loved this Hotel. Nice location near Target and Bus1. Cute decor. Maid service daily. Breakfast made up per your menu selections. Filtered water (hot, cold) available. Very nice staff. Only one downside, it is across the street from the fire station so you can hear the sirens if they are called in the night. One night- two times, another night- one time, next three nights -none.
- 5/5
Amazing B&B, love the decor, feels so comfort and the front desk host was so pleasant.
- 5/5
I always stay here when I visit San Francisco. Wonderful service and a breakfast that can’t be beat.
- 5/5
Excellent spot in San Francisco. Staff was very welcoming and flexible. Can't recommended them enough!
- 5/5
Lovely bed and breakfast. Staff very courteous and helpful. Definitely would go back there if needed
- 5/5
Very cool spot. Good location to jump off from. Wonderful attentive and accommodating staff.
- 5/5
Jeff and Shalini were amazing!! Really enjoyed our stay. Very quaint bedrooms, very clean bathrooms, and a perfect stay for a vegan couple like us!
- 5/5
Great place!
- 5/5
Wonderful place, if we could give it 10 stars I would.
- 5/5
The Monte Cristo Bed & Breakfast is a gem!! It reminded me so much of my European travels. The building is unique and pleasing. Jack is very helpful and kind. The property is within walking distance of many food venues. We were able to park, easily, near the Monte. Make sure you pay attention to street parking signs. Fabulous sweet treats are put out for your enjoyment, including chocolate, cookies & tea. Don’t miss the hot, made to order breakfast. I will definitely stay at the Monte again in the future.
- 5/5
Very cozy and welcoming! Excellent stay!
- 5/5
A lovely place to stay.
- 4/5
The room and in particular the bathroom were great, being just above street level there wasn’t much in the way of a view and vehicles driving by in the night was a bit of a thing. Otherwise it was very well maintained and comfortable. I think if I visited again I would opt for an upper level room
- 5/5
Quaint Victorian style bed and breakfast. We loved the fresh breakfast everyday and baked goods available in the dining area. Very quiet. Room and bed were very comfortable. Shower and bathroom were spacious and had a bidet which was amazing! Love a warm toilet seat! Free parking up the block. We were able to walk several places however, we had a rental as well to get us around for site seeing. Lovely city. We will be back!
- 5/5
This was our second time staying here. All employees are so nice and helpful! Rooms are unique and clean. Bathrooms are modern and toiletries provided. The breakfast is delicious; you can order the day before and indicate time. Lots of choices! Snacks and drinks are available all day. They include fresh baked cookies, trail mix, nuts, water, coffee, tea and more. I highly recommend.
- 5/5
Nice breakfast selection was included . Very pleasant and accommodating staff
- 5/5
Highly recommend. Clean, great service, and free parking nearby.
- 4/5
Very friendly staff, snacks in lobby nice touch, comfortable rooms. Very enjoyable trip. Good location of hotel.
- 5/5
Breakfast was delicious and freshly made and there were snacks, homemade cookies and fruit as well as tea and coffee available all day. Bedroom was very comfortable
- 5/5
By far one of the best I have ever stayed at. Old world charm with very nicely updated rooms, etc. Breakfast was perfect. The dinning area was loaded full of fruit, snacks, etc. Internet was very fast. Great streaming options on the TV. I only wish there was a small desk in my room. No matter, this is now my preference for SF!
- 5/5
Older building, but has lots of charm. Excellent service, including full cooked breakfast. Easy street parking.
- 4/5
Good choice
- 5/5
We felt right at home here. Everyone was warm and welcoming, the rooms were very nice, and the complimentary breakfast was delicious. We also very much appreciated the bidet in our room. Who doesn’t like a warm toilet seat with cleaning and drying abilities?
- 5/5
Amazing place the style of the rooms are amazing
- 5/5
Great staff and great experience.
- 5/5
Great stay; thank you!
- 5/5
My 2 night stay was very easy and convenient. The room was comfortable, the bathroom was updated and breakfast had something for everyone.
- 5/5
Very nostalgic bed and breakfast. You feel like you’re staying in an inn from the distant past with modern amenities. Very comfortable.
- 5/5
The Motne Christo Bed and Breakfast never fails it’s always a good nights stay there, friendly staff and just above and beyond.
- 5/5
Even though the room was the tiny room it was cute but the bed was on the hard side so it made it a lil hard to get a good night sleep, other than that I recommend this bed and breakfast, I’ve stayed in other rooms.
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
This place has all the comforts of home and hospitality of a top hotel.
- 5/5
Quaint while updated with a modern bathroom. Comfortable and quiet. Nice host's. Plenty of free snacks. Very nice breakfast.
- 4/5
The second night was like night and day: we were moved to a street-side room, airy and well-ventilated, and spent a terrific day and evening there. The breakfast and staff were lovely throughout the visit. I’d recommend the Monte Cristo to anyone wanting to stay in the Richmond District, with the proviso that on a warm night, you ensure a cooler room.
- 5/5
Jack at check-in was very friendly and accommodating. Good and service for breakfast was great. Would definitely stay here on our next trip to see family.
- 5/5
A very quaint boutique hotel, I just loved staying here. I was alone for one night and the queen room was just enough. The dark wood turn of the previous century aesthetic and creeky floors gave it a warm comfy feel to it. Thanks, Paul
- 5/5
We love the location, the breakfasts, the decor, the comfortable beds, the beautiful bathrooms and the host,Jack. We like everything about the Monte Cristo!
- 4/5
We enjoyed our stay at the Monte Cristo. It was very clean and the proprietor was very nice. The only thing I would say is that it was dark due to the decoration. I love vintage, but this was wearing around the edges.
- 4.5/5
The location is outstanding…the rooms are lovely…bed is super comfortable…it’s historic but the bathrooms are modern. We love this place.
- 5/5
Friendly, comfy, great breakfast
- 5/5
Was a very nice B and B. Quiet room and very good breakfast.
- 5/5
Charming Victorian decor. Good mattress. Nice full breakfast. Coffee, tea and snacks were out for guests to enjoy 24/7.
- 5/5
Rooms were nicely furnished and very clean and comfortable. Great location and the breakfast was wonderful. Cookies and other snacks available 24/7. Free street parking was available during our short stay.
- 4/5
Nice and cozy. Host is really nice. Breakfast is tasty and home-like. Very quiet.
- 5/5
Great stay. Just be warned that there is no air conditioning. Would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Easy walk to Golden Gate Park. Very surprised how nice and quiet the neighborhood was. Enjoyed the breakfast variety of fresh ingredients, great beginning of the day. Snack and fudge to die for in the afternoon and evening. A block away from a hip lounge to have a drink and begin your evening. Well be returning !
- 5/5
This is the Bed and Breakfast that all other B&B aspire to emulate.
- 5/5
A very old and well maintained building. The staff was great and went out of their way to accommodate us.
- 5/5
Cute and cozy. Incredible staff. The breakfast was delicious.
- 5/5
Loved the decor. There were available refreshments, drinks, etc all day. Breakfast was perfectly served. We enjoyed our stay. Staff was very helpful.
- 5/5
Looking for a hotel in the Presidio area of San Francisco? Stop looking and make a reservation at this fantastic B&B. The breakfasts, snacks, fresh cookies, signature chocolates were wonderful. Thank you to Jack for the outstanding hospitality. As Arnold would say, “I’ll be back!”
- 5/5
Wonderful stay!
- 5/5
The location was convenient for the things we came to do, and while parking was on-street, we didn't have any trouble finding a spot.
- 4/5
My stay at the Monte Cristo Bed and Breakfast was very nice. The staff was great and super accommodating. It isn't in central downtown San Francisco but public transportation was super close and easy to use to get to the places we wanted to go. The big negative was parking. There is street parking but the car has to be moved according to the street cleaning schedule. The hotel does say that there is a lot close by that could be parked at for a fee but when we drove by it almost looked abandoned and there were very few cars parked there so it didn't seem safe to park. The only other comment my group had was that the breakfast didn't include any type of pastry or sweet item like cinnamon rolls, donuts, muffins...something sweet. This didn't bother me since I'm not a sweet for breakfast person but it was a comment my group made. Everything else was great!
- 5/5
Highly recommend staying here! Quiet and cozy. Would defiantly stay here again.
- 5/5
Loved everything about it! Executing my expectations!
- 5/5
Loved it!

Best place to stay in that area of town! The breakfast is great, the bathroom was beautiful and updated. They were very accommodating when I extended my stay. I would stay here again.

- 4.5/5
Lovely bed and breakfast. Room is very attractive and bathroom has a great electric bidet. Snack and coffee, tea available all day. Cute little lounge where we met lots of nice people. Breakfast was hot eggs and choice of meats and breads, cereals etc. bread products were not great and it would be nice to have waffles or pancakes available when you are staying more than a couple of days. But overall, good and convenient. Lights in bathroom had a timer and kept turning off on us. Some instructions on how to control this would be helpful.
- 5/5
Our room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. They have clearly invested in some pretty great soundproofing. The mattress was also super comfortable…those combined with the light blocking shades meant the best sleep of my life. The room was small but had everything you’d need. Bathroom was well appointed and generously sized. There are lots of restaurants within walking distance, along with an amazing park (The Presidio). We also took advantage of the many bus lines that run within blocks of the B&B; getting around SFO was so easy. If you are dieting, beware!!! These folks lay a mean 24/7 all you can eat CHOCOLATE BUFFET. And homemade cookies. It truly tested my willpower; this was the good stuff (ie Ghirardelli). Breakfast was always tasty; Wi-Fi was super fast. The breakfast buffet was the same every day.
- 5/5
Monte Cristo was extremely accommodating when my co-worker fell ill and ended up needing to stay an extra couple days to recover.
- 5/5
Exceptional
- 5/5
This updated very old building is very comfortable, quiet and private. Rooms are small, but everything is modern - notably plumbing and wiring. There has been a real effort made to retain the prior feel with wallpaper, furniture, carpets, pictures on the wall. Staff is very friendly and helpful, and breakfasts were excellent!
- 5/5
Quaint and comfortable setting in the Laurel Heights neighborhood near UCSF, USF and the Presidio. Staff were all friendly and efficient. Breakfast and homemade snacks were all delicious. We will stay there again
- 5/5
Comfy bed, excellent big bathroom, and delicious breakfast plus very communicative hosts. A perfect stay!
- 5/5
The property itself was charming and warm as was the staff. The continental breakfast was excellent and plentiful as was the availability of snacks throughout the day. The rooms were tastefully decorated and the private bathrooms had the most up to date amenities. I will definitely return to this establishment!
- 5/5
Great staff & location. Very quaint decor and remodeled bathrooms were great.
- 5/5
Great stay, great staff, great breakfast
- 5/5
The service is great! I’ve stayed here twice to visit my daughter nearby. I stayed in the Junior Suite. It’s really more like an apartment.
- 5/5
very cozy, home-like feeling. Feels like a hotel but more intimate. All amenities were available. Clean bathrooms and rooms. daily cleaning services !! excellent stay. We would definitely be coming back. There is Bidet
- 5/5
Jack is awesome👍 The property location and amenities PERFECT!!
- 5/5
Real good and friendly place overall. I loved it, definitely will be back again.
- 5/5
Great breakfasts. Modern renovated bathrooms. Charming
- 5/5
This was a wonderful experience. The accommodations were superb. Staff very nice. Beautiful room with bidet and the arming towel racks. Breakfast was gourmet! I will go back!!
- 5/5
This is a fantastic place to stay. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The rooms and amenities are great. The breakfast in the mornings are delicious! The other guests were friendly too! I would highly recommend staying here!
- 3/5
Very pleasant accommodating staff. Room was very small. Very comfortable bed. TV was very difficult to figure out ( I know how to use a firestick) and there were no directions. Would have like some sort of night light as the room was pitch black after turning iff room lights. Bathroom light automatically goes off after a few minutes. We were concerned about the fire station next door, but never did hear a siren or road noise during the night. Convenient location to UCSF. Nice place if you are looking for an historical setting.
- 5/5
Amazing stay
- 5/5
Excellent Banana Bread and chocolate cookies. Comfortable bed and one of the cleanest bathrooms EVER! It was a perfect weekend!
- 4/5
The room was nicely appointed, clean. Fruit and snacks were available for guests and a tv/sitting room for guest use as well. Wish we were there more than one night! Could easily hear guests in next room but was more a matter of lack of consideration on their part.
- 5/5
I felt like I was in Europe. Clean, cozy, delicious home baked treats and breakfast. So quiet too. Wonderful!
- 5/5
Friendly staff, nice common area, clean. Would stay again.
- 5/5
The property is basically a San Francisco Landmark. For being as old as it is (1875), it is in extremely excellent condition. Very well maintained. The Western Addition of San Francisco is a very safe area. My wife walked north and saw beautiful vistas and very impressive homes. As a native, it is one of our San Francisco treats!
- 5/5
Awesome.
- 5/5
Friendly host, great services, flexible to accommodate early check-in where possible. The room is beautiful with very comfortable bed. Great breakfast service and snacks throughout the day.
- 4/5
Very quaint, clean b & b. Bathroom was spotless. Only downside for me was street noise since I’m a light sleeper. But everything else was great. Would stay there again.
- 5/5
Great. Loved Loved Loved the stay. Breakfast was amazing as well as the owners! So awesome! Thank you!
- 5/5
The breakfast was GORGEOUS. I’m not one to rave about eggs and bacon but these were really so delicious and cooked perfectly. Cookies and chocolates available all day and night. And such a beautiful old building. I stayed in a petite Queen room and it exceeded my expectations
- 5/5
Comfortable and clean. Accommodating host. Satisfying breakfast. Need to be careful about the street parking hours limitations. We got a ticket. Great location.
- 5/5
This was a very sweet small hotel. It had great character. The staff was super helpful and friendly. Rooms were very clean.
- 5/5
This was a REALLY neat old building that had been restored to a beautiful state that mixes colonial charm with modern conveniences. Great homey vibe, nice sitting area with fireplace and TV, little snack and tea service area. Breakfast was fantastic and to-order, served in the room because of COVID. This ended up being a key value for us as we wanted to quickly get through our morning and out onto the town. Walking distance to The Presidio, USF and Golden Gate Park was perfect. Lots of coffee, stores, eateries and other conveniences within walking distance.
