Reviews

The hotel is praised for its convenient location near public transportation and local attractions, as well as its accommodating staff. However, the property and surrounding area are frequently described as unsafe, dirty, and outdated. The shared bathrooms and lack of amenities are also common complaints.

We needed a place to sleep for 4-5 hours before an early morning flight and it did its job. It was cheap compared to other options in San Francisco. The room was small and modest but clean. There are no en-suite rooms, so you have to share the bathroom with others. The pink and green internal deco is a bit odd but passable for this price. There’s no lift, so you have to carry your bags upstairs to the 2-3 floor where the guest rooms are located. There are quite a lot of homeless people around in this area.

The price of the hotel was affordable, if you're travelling on a budget and need a place to stay, this is a great deal. Wi-Fi was included. It's located in the heart of a historically rich district filled with Hispanic culture; from food to other cultural influences. It's within walking distance to the renowned Valencia street and Mission Dolores Park. The location is definitely not lacking in excitement. Like a double edge sword, Union hotel is located on Mission street within the Mission district. You'll find that San Francisco is a relatively small city(about 49 square miles). The environment from street to street can change drastically. Mission street has its own identity or "vibe" compared to Valencia street. It's a particularly a rough area with people struggling with all types of ailments. While I wasn't there for long, I could imagine staying there long term would make someone uncomfortable. If you aren't accustom to rough environments, this may not be the place for you.

It was clean, a good location if you enjoy the mission district, staff was nice and they provided free coffee and a microwave. Shared bathrooms but ample clean bathrooms so it was never a problem. Also there was a sink in my room. The lights in the room were a very bright white light. I am light sensitive so I wore sunglasses or kept only my book reading light that I brought on after dark. Also there are lots of street people outside around it but that's the SF mission district these days for you. Also there are no refrigerators but that was to be expected.

The staff was very friendly and kind, and that is the one good thing I will say about this place. The bed seemed unclean, the window did not lock, the walls were paper thin, and the room was extremely warm. I am a solo traveler and to be fair I did make it out alive, the bed was comfy enough and I did go nose blind to the distinct but undefined stench eventually. The shared bathroom was scary and I didn’t even entertain the idea of using the shower room. Also coming back during the night was a little frightening on account of the extremely rowdy homeless crowd and the smell of urine singed my nose hairs. No regrets but I also will never return.

Note, if you have problems accessing the internet, it may be due to your phone. I was able to get online with my tablet but not my phone. The shared bathroom was always clean. The shower was so-so. I had no issues regulating the temp as another guest noted. It's just slow to respond so you have to be patient when adjusting the temperature. I wasn't keen on styrofoam cups for the coffee, but for the rates they charge I was pleased to get complimentary coffee that was much better than the typical hotel room packets.

The property is so poor and surrounding areas are so terrible. I felt very unsafe when police not present especially at night. Bedding is old and dirty. I didn’t take off my clothes to sleep. At night I was so cold then had to use blanket covering the lower part of my body. The promised Wi-Fi didn’t work. I talked with the manager, she tried to fix but no use. There were not private toilets, you have to share them with everyone on the floor. The front desk manager was very nice and I felt badly that I had to leave in such a rush, but it was a waste of money and I wish it had been advertised more honestly. The area as well has gotten very dangerous, which was very sad to see. They also wanted to treat me like a prisoner near the end of my stay, saying I was going up and down the stairs to go vape too often, they wanted to restrict me to my room to only come out every 2 hours, I reported that to the police department and hopefully there will be an investigation.

Well it was clean for one, second the manager was nice and even warned me of some of the dangerous areas to avoid in San Francisco. I left a couple days early, they gave no refund for me leaving early which I know some hotels have a policy on that, that's ok. Their weekly/monthly rates are too expensive in my opinion, I hope their aware they are charging almost what a private studio would cost for their monthly rates I believe it was somewhere in the region of $1700-1750/MO I know it's SF but maybe drop that by a couple hundred I'd reconsider. There was wifi although I never used it, there was a TV that actually worked, a faucet in the room and showers/bath that are shared outside of the room. If your just looking for a relatively safe area in SF to spend some time or work related trip I'd recommend checking this place out for a couple of days.

I needed a place to stay in the area to help a friend. The hotel is clean, and the staff is friendly. This hotel is a great option if you are on a budget. I would not recommend this location if you need a car. Parking is difficult and the garage nearby is not safe. My car was broken into during my stay at the garage around the corner.

This place is a great value. Not fancy but how could it be for the very low price. It is hostel level accommodation but you get your own space. It is very clean and everything works. Shared bathrooms were always easy to get into and clean. For the price it is excellent.

If you don't mind a dorm room type stay this is the hotel for you. The location is killer. Its right next to the 16th/Mission Bart station. It was quiet, with the exception of the hvac/unit outside. My only qualm, the bed was not the most comfortable, but after a long, hard day it's barely noticeable. Will definitely be back. Oh and kudos to the guy that checked me in, unfortunately I did not get his name but he's the best!

Keep in mind this is basic lodging I would say, with a bed, dresser and TV. No fridge/microwave/iron so be ready! It’s clean enough but noted a bunch of fruit flies/gnats…….If you plan to be gone most of the time it’s worth the money due to accessibility and location.

Outside is the sketchest part of mission st, which isn't the hotel's fault but still effects the experience regardless. I thankfully had a friend to walk me home at night but otherwise would have been nervous. The hotel is also relatively loud because of it.

The room is just small and the amenities are minimum, like there are not selves in the bathroom to place stuff. Small things like this. The bathrooms are vey clean which is great. It was walking distance to a lot of places, we made the most of it and thank again to the lovely stuff.

You get what you pay for and this is a cheap option for SF, all things considered. I am giving a poor overall rating because the mattress was awful. Springs and bars beneath a centimeter of cloth. Not a restful expereicne. Dorm room living with shared restrooms and showers. Additionally, this is not a place for the faint of heart. Drug use and homelessness are right out the front door. Use caution in this neighborhood.

Clean rooms with plenty of space for luggage and most importantly a window for ventilation! Bathrooms are shared which isn't a big deal as you have your own wash basin in the room for washing hands, brushing etc. Location is excellent being next to BART station and on Mission.

This is a very tiny hotel in the middle of the missions, not the hampton inn. In the little I interacted with the staff they were nice enough. The rooms are tiny, they dont even have a chair. You are offered a bed, TV, hangers, small table with towels and a tissue box, and a sink. The towels have definetly been in use

Not sure how I missed that this place had shared bathrooms. The room was a bed and nightstand that was more of a TV tray than actual table. The lady was kind enough, but this was just not a hotel, but more of a glorified hostle

For what it cost it is a clean comfortable place to sleep. The staff is nice. I felt secure but I wouldn't bring a family. They had coffee and a microwave at the office. the only secure and consistant parking is a garage a street over and not free. I would stay again only use BART. The station is next door and a bus stop right in front.

The family that staffs or owns the hotel is very nice. The shower had a little hair hanging around. Stayed in a small single bed and also a double bed. The double bed price was $10 more and the room, although still small, was twice the size. Located in the Mission, which is entertaining.

Convenient location, near public transportation, near restaurants, functional hotel plumbing and cleanliness is well maintained, feels safe and secure inside the hotel, polite and helpful staff, shared microwave oven only on one floor, complimentary coffee. Free city maps and some tourist flyers provided. Cons: Century old building with century old standards, no AC or Heating, no elevator, no handicap access, unreliable Wi-Fi, shared restrooms and baths, extremely tiny restrooms, no toilette seat covers in restrooms, worn out towels, no sinks in the restrooms, not a single chair and table in my room, no refrigerator neither in my room, nor in entire hotel to be shared, noisy streets with police sirens, with adjacent restaurants' roof exhaust fans roaring till the closure. Smells of different cuisines inside and outside hotel. Chinese fish market on the hotel's ground floor. Homeless and sketchy characters hanging around 16th and Mission BART station located near the hotel. This hotel is ok to come late at night to sleep and leave early in the morning to go about your business or pleasure. This is a good place for those who are travelling on a tight budget. I appreciate the savings. You get most of what you pay for. If you can sacrifice basic minimum comfort for the price, than this is the hotel for you.

This hotel is really clean! The bathrooms & showers are not in the rooms, but they are on every floor, PRIVATE with locked doors & hand sanitizer. The hotel staff is constantly cleaning, all day. The rooms are really nice, newly painted with HD TV, cable & powerful wi-fi, with a dresser full of drawers, sink with cabinet and a table for a night stand. There is a microwave available & coffee machine with dark coffee & organic coffee, hot chocolate & tea by the front desk. This is my home away from home in San Francisco. One may not like the front gate, but they buzz you up immediately at all hours.

Great staff helped make this a good stay. My bed was comfy and the place is clean. My simple room was quiet and my sleeps were uninterrupted. There are many of San Francisco's homeless in the area but they do leave you alone so that all felt ok. A bonus was being so close to the subway so it was really quick to get to the ferry area and also much cheaper than an uber with the quick and direct train line to the airport.

The staff are great! Very friendly and kind and willing to assist with certain requests (ie: a fan in our room). Its a very basic room with a shared bathroom/shower. We didnt end up spending much time in our room, so it served its purpose. However if youre looking for more amenities and individual privacy, id suggest booking somewhere else. The only other thing to be aware of is this hotel is located in the heart of the Mission District on Mission & 16th, a colorful area to say the least lol. My suggestion would be to bring ear plugs with you as the noises from the street can be alarming at times. Other then that, great experience!

Alas, a fair and honest evaluation must mention the fact that the Union Hotel is in a very outdated building, one of several properties in Mission Street that cry out for urban renewal. No elevator, no bathrooms in the rooms, inadequate soundproofing, unattractive décor, very unappealing neighborhood, and so on. Whether the building is a firetrap I do not know, but it hardly inspires confidence. The friendly staff make an effort to help guests, but they really should be running a significantly better property. I sincerely wish them all the best.

This little hotel is in the Mission, right next to a BART station and has good prices. It’s near some good restaurants and less than a ten-minute walk to Tartine Bakery. The staff are friendly and helpful, and they have nice, free coffee and tea in the lobby. However, the building is a little older and not too soundproofed. The downside of affordable prices is the fact that there are shared bathrooms. They’re clean and serviceable but nonetheless shared. Arguably worth it for the savings, however. I’d stay there again if I was traveling to SF solo.
