I got a fridge this time and that was nice but it’s usually a good hotel to stay at There’s a bit of wear and tear in the rooms but that happens over time with so many people in and out.

I had arrived early after a terrible experience at another hotel and the staff were SO NICE and the property was very nice. Decent breakfast and nice lounging areas. Nice view. Many things in walking distance including Dumb Records and Prairie Archives as well as capitol attractions. Absolutely recommend this hotel if you’re spending time in Springfield.

Hotel rooms were good. Seemed to be updated. Our first room AC didn’t work but the staff switched us immediately. Floor 7 reeked of marijuana. Heard talking all night in room next door until 5am. Breakfast started at 7am on Sunday. We had somewhere to be at 7 and went down and no coffee or anything available at 6:45am. Overall an ok stay.

No house service was offered as they do it on demand. Old times are dead when house cleaning was available every day for every hotel. Now rates are higher but no house cleaning anymore. Staff was attentive and did provide whatever needed. Breakfast is available and basic with eggs, meat and juices. Overall decent property and will likely choose it again. Parking is plenty and free.

While the bed was comfortable and the room was clean, the bathroom is odd - toddler low toilet and vet high sink counter. The gym is in the farthest dark hallway of the basement and was very musty with flooring curling up. It didn’t feel very safe. The breakfast was maintained well by the cook but the room is very dark.

It’s in a great location right by the beautiful capitol. I had reserved a king bed when I got here they told me that they only had a Queen and no other rooms were available… Came to my Queen room and the air didn’t work. Called the desk asked them to come up. The girl came up, set it to 35° and the air still didn’t work hours later.. she told me there were absolutely no other rooms to put me in that the hotel was booked solid and a manager would call me in the morning… a huge waste of money for $150 to be hot all night!

I booked the presidential suite. One small trash can in the whole place. Then opened the closet and there was a hole the size of my fist. Every time you close and open the bathroom door it would get stopped by the ironing board(this was the cause of the hole in the wall) which made I’d hard for a big guy to get out of the bathroom without yelling for help. Great location just not very well maintained for a downtown hotel. Paid a lot extra for the Presidential room but never again it wasn’t worth it. It was room number 200.

On my visit third week of April is was 80+ degrees outside. I checked in shortly after 9pm and went to my assigned room - it was overly warm so I immediately checked the thermostat to make sure it was working. It was set at 68 degrees, but the room was 77 degrees. I grabbed my things and went back to the front desk to report that the HVAC was broken in that room and could they reassign me. They promptly did so and upgraded me to a suite. I went to that room and faced the same problem, realizing that the prior room didn't have a broken HVAC, but that the hotel's system was inadequate. Since I needed to go to sleep in 90 minutes I set the thermostat as low as I could in order to cool the room down and set it at 35 degrees(!) - unfortunately there is no High-Med-Low speeds ... only Auto. The suite had a second room which was even warmer -- why? Thermostat was broken and the temp said 77 degrees -- despite pushing all the buttons it did not light up and nothing changed or gave any hint of working. Just then cool air started coming through the vents in the room and I pulled my portable thermometer out of my backpack to see how quickly I could get temps down in the rooms. Within an hour I got the main room down to 74.1 and within 90 minutes had the bedroom down to 72.4 degrees. Good enough, time for bed. I reset the thermostat to 60. When I woke up in the morning the temps were the same. Appointments in the rooms were sparse/tired, bed squeaked, pillows weren't terrible.

We had to change rooms because the HVAC wasn't working properly and the bed was uncomfortable. The second room was better. The elevator wasn't working properly and it dropped us from the lobby to the basement, which was terrifying. The outside of the property was not well maintained... full of weeds. Would not stay there again.

There was no refrigerator in my room and no ice machine on my floor. The shower curtain was too short and sprayed water all over the floor. My air conditioner did not work in my room. One of the bathroom doors and the lobby bathroom did not lock in one of the faucets in the lobby bathroom was missing a handle and the lights were flickering. One of the elevators was not working and took us down to the basement and we were stuck down there and had to take the stairs back up to the lobby. The elevators had not been inspected since 2024 and the inspection expired in October of 2025.

Horrible experience. Checked in and the first room we were given looked like a murder scene. Dirty hand marks all over the walls. What looked like red polish (hopefully not blood) in the shower, toilet was clogged. Disgusting.. gave us a second room and it was better but again, dirty hand marks all over the walls and ceiling. Do they even clean? The ac/heat works when it feels like working. Terrible stay and disgusting room. The entrance area looks nice but once you get past the lobby, it’s terrible.

The ladies bathrrom in the lobby had 4 stalls; one with no TP, another where the door didn't close, toilets barely flushed. .Upon entering the room, we found a dirty toilet. They did come clean it. Coffee could be better especially in the lobby, second day we were there the coffee in the lobby didn’t work. Breakfast on the weekend starting at 7:00 am, We were there for a wrestling tournament. 7:00 on a weekend not very accommodating. Only saw one gentleman filling up the food. Never saw anyone check on the two small coffee pots or wiping any tables during breakfast. A lot of issues with our keys not working. A few of my other families that were with us and us would not recommend this hotel or we will not be staying there next year if needed. Our room was not the cleanest when we walked in. Had to hunt ice down…we were on 7th floor and finally found an ice machine on 4th floor. No refrigerator in room. I booked a queen bed room and was given a room with 2 small double beds…we were there for our anniversary so we had to squeeze into one small bed which sucked. The only thing I liked about this place was the beautiful view of the state capital.

This is my third stay with this building and my last. The hotel itself is not that bad except the room key situation that they have there is seriously flawed. Every time that I'd go to the 7th floor I'd have to come back down and get them to reprogram my key. I made certain that it was nowhere around my phone or anything else that would demagnetize it. The front desk clerk had the audacity to tell me every time you leave the building you have to get a new key. Which I don't believe. This is the second trip that I've had where this has happened every single night of my stay and frankly there's hotels out there just as good without this issue.

They forgot to order plastic knives for the breakfast. Room has maybe a quarter roll of toilet paper and no spare roll. Person who runs the laundry for the bed sheets would not let the ONLY person working l let him use the laundry for our wet clothes. I had to take the we stuff to my daughter's wash and dry them there then go make to motel so my husband could get dressed to go back to her place. Clothes would not have to been washed off the key worked. When I asked for a refund I was told the manager would be there this morning. Then got told at check out, he won't be there until Monday. Guests were smoking out across the hall, instead of making them leave they just moved them down the hall for the next night, where they just started fighting in the all l hall at night and smoked pot in the elevator instead. Will never stay there again.

The only reason I would score 2 overall is because the staff is really very nice. The breakfast was horribly inadequate (bagels but no cream cheese, milk but no cereal, no coffee, waffle irons were ice cold, no attendant) and i had to purchase a meal which I think is inadequate service for the price i paid for the room. I was "upgraded" to a suite for my trouble over breakfast and either the heat did not work or the building need maintenance because there was freezing cold air drafting into the room. I was only able to stand it as I had brought an electric blanket. Also, I had booked a king room and the suite had a much smaller bed that was old and creaky. The hallways needed vacuumed and the first room I was in had a pube in the tub and one in the toilet. I really really really wanted to like this hotel because it's 3 blocks from my work and I wanted a safe and convenient spot to stay in during the snow storm. But next time I might just take my chances driving than stay here again.

I will admit that I read the varying reviews prior to arrival, some of which were concerning. Still, with a very good rate and convenience to my friend’s home (I was in town for a funeral), I decided to take a chance. I am glad I did. I honestly do not understand some of the other poor reviews. I am picky and I found my stay to be lovely.

The room was decent. Heat wouldn’t go over 68. And when you have paying hotel guest they should be able to park in the parking lot. Renting out a space or whatever for a party should not affect your guest parking. We couldn’t even get in the entrance because cars had it blocked.

The building is dated. But it has been refreshed and is perfectly fine, with a great location and a great staff. There was plenty of close parking and it was as close as we could get to family in town. The breakfast was limited but it was enough to get us going and, again, all the staff in that area were wonderful. We were baffled by the negative reviews. The pictures of the hotel online really don’t reflect the actual shape of this hotel. I was actually surprised it was so inexpensive with how nice the pictures looked. Upon arrival, I could see why it was an inexpensive hotel. Everything was just meh. I think they tried really hard to elevate it; but it just missed the mark. Room smelled musty, and everything just felt kinda gross. The box frames didn’t even have covers over them. It served its purpose for a quick one night stay on the way up to Chicago but I wouldt stay there again.

Listen to the bad reviews - I wish I had! Loud buzzing noise every 2 minutes (timed), I believe something to do with the air conditioning as the room did not cool properly so we were hot which was miserable. Called several times and no one addressed it - one guy even came up and tried to claim he didn’t hear it, which is comical. Due to the loud noise, we did not sleep. Ceiling falling down near the entrance. (The next door to us said the ceiling was completely missing in one area in his room). Stains on carpet and couch. No linens for pull-out couch - had to ask for some at the desk and was told there were none and the guy had to go and “get some from another room.” Sheets smell terribly of some very strong fragrance that made us sick and gave us hives - my daughter was immediately congested after laying in them and eventually even vomited. The smell gave us terrible headaches as well. Phones very sticky and headboard had stains running down. No mattress protector underneath the very thin fitted sheet which is completely unsanitary and disgusting. Shower curtain torn. Hallways/elevators smell like smoke. No CO detectors in the room. Elevators are not up to date with fire marshal inspections which is completely unsafe. Overall the worst experience I’ve ever had at a hotel. Take the warnings and stay away!

The hotel checked out one of our guests after the first night and gave his room away. They did not have another room at our rate to accommodate him. I asked just to book the room anyway they told me see the manager the next morning and she would straighten it out. I went down the next morning at 7 AM and I was told she would not be until 9 AM. I took her phone number and called her at 9:02 AM they told me she was in training and not available and to call back at 4 PM. I asked for her to call me back which she actually did, unfortunately I missed the call and I called her back within two minutes. They told me she was gone for the day to call back on Monday. I called Wyndham reservation and was able to book the room that they would not book for me. I figured I would just figure it out after the manager got back. when we arrived at the hotel that afternoon, they originally could not find the reservation. I just booked. They then told me my guest had been moved to another room and that he’d never stayed in his original room. They sent my guest to a room then they had me call him after he was in the room and asked him not to use the room because they were going to send him back to the room they said he never stayed in. When he got to the new room, the key would not work so they sent him back to the room. They told him to leave. Also, there are french fries in the hallway for three days. Homeless people harassed us outside of the building, we also seen them in the lobby.

The State House Inn is a value proposition and that is clear from the rooms and throughout. In other words, it is providing basic affordable accommodations. It is not a luxury resort. Our suite had a large seating area and a separate bedroom. Even though it was on the second floor, it felt more like a garden apartment because all we had for light was a narrow window that began 3/4 way up the wall and looking onto the hvac system. If you want a view. avoid #201. There were stains on one of the chairs and on the carpet. It wasn't dirty, but there was no denying that everything had been used heavily. There was a table beside a wall that previously held a built-in. We could tell there had been a built-in because it hadn't been fully patched. Even though we had coffee, we had no coffee maker. And there were no garbage cans. A weird aspect was that because of some town ordinance, there are no soap or shampoos in the rooms: you have to ask for them at the front desk. Apparently a Springfield believes it better for the environment that people smell. For all that, it was a room; it was tidy; it was clean; we slept undisturbed; and we carry on.

To my frustration, when I arrived—exhausted and running on no sleep—the front desk attendant informed me there were no available rooms and that housekeeping wouldn’t arrive until 9:00 AM. I explained that I had already paid for the room and had made prior arrangements with the hotel. She initially insisted nothing was available, until I pressed further. Only then did she ask for my name and “suddenly” found a room. Her attitude was dismissive and unhelpful, and it felt like if I hadn't pushed back, I wouldn't have gotten the room I already paid for. Once I got to the room, the experience didn’t improve. The hallway carpets were visibly dirty and hadn’t been vacuumed. The room itself was somewhat clean, but the bathroom had a terrible odor, likely from being wiped down with a dirty rag. There were no toiletries—not even soap to wash my hands. On top of that, the air conditioning didn’t work properly. It was 93 degrees outside and the thermostat inside the room read 78, making it extremely uncomfortable. Will not recommend to others.

After being outside for the rest of the day we both just wanted a cool shower and to collapse into bed. We got into the room and it was still hot. The people at the reception were very welcoming. The hotel has a lot of potential. The location is very good with walking distance to all historic downtown places. The first room had the air conditioner not working, this was a problem due to the extremely hot weather . The front desk was very accommodating in getting me another room. That night the air conditioner did work however the following night I woke up in the middle of the night to a sauna room. It seemed the building had air conditioning issues because the hallways were just as hot. I was there on a business trip and both rooms I was in had no hair dryer, mini fridge or ironing boards. The continental breakfast offered what was left of a few apples, cereal and waffles. The coffee was very diluted almost water like. I truly hope they solve their AC issues and pay attention to providing the essentials in the rooms.

No soap or Kleenex in room. Shower had hair in it from last occupant. TV remote had battery issues. Breakfast was terrible. No milk, no yogurt, egg hockey pucks didn’t resemble eggs, no bacon, apple juice dispenser was broken. Good coffee.

It’s a shame because this hotel is directly across from the Capitol building so it’s a great location but the hotel and rooms are very dirty. My room looked like it hadn’t been vacuumed for a while. Debris and hair (or furballs), dirty bedcover and the room phone was so dirty I would not have touched it if I had to. Also, my colleague and I shared a room and she tried to enter the building at midnight and the doors were locked. She tried calling the front desk but got no answer so I walked down to let her in. The phone continued to ring and once she was in the building we waited to see if anyone would come for the front desk but no one ever did. Had I not been there to let her in, she would have remained locked out. It’s is not a keyed entry and no one was around. I mentioned it as check out and the person working the desk that morning apologized for the dirty room and was shocked to hear no one was at the desk the night before and that the door was locked. She said they’re going through some changes. Hopefully things get better for this hotel. I don’t ever plan to stay there again.

STAFF were slow to wait on people. Worst was digested food left in sink in kitchenette . Also the counter tops were dirty. I was moved to a cleaner room with no kitchen facilities. The rooms had missing shelves and/or other amenities. their website said they are undergoing renovation but that's no excuse for rotting food in sink.

This was the second time staying so my group of friends could enjoy downtown bars and this year Pride. The ladies at the front desk are always so kind and extremely patient and helpful with any questions we’ve had. The free breakfast in the morning is a simple small collection of classics so no complaints there especially being free. Rooms were clean and no real rowdy fellow guests. Will come back again next time we want a affordable place to stay after a night out on the town!

They helped us check in early but one room wasnt clean. We had to get to a meeting by 3. The lady told us they would have it cleaned by the time we got back. We get there and the room is not clean. They have no clue whats going on. We came back at 1045pm. They locked the room. Tell us he has to get another room because they didnt clean it. He signed papers and everything. Absolute bullcrap. Wont be staying here again.

I booked this hotel through the State House Inn website on 3/16/25 for a three night stay 5/7/25-5/10/25. I received a confirmation email with the correct dates that day that I made the reservation. I got a second confirmation email on 5/5/25, with trip details still accurate, saying I could save on a rental car. On 5/6/25 I got another email from State House Inn saying that some amenities may be unavailable due to updates being made to the property. When I arrived with my printed confirmation to check in, I was told that they had no record of my booking and the hotel was full. I showed her my three emails and my printed confirmation and she just said "sorry, I don't know what to tell you" and turned me away. I had to find another hotel, last minute, way outside of town due to the state senate being in session. This was completely unacceptable and absolutely ruined my trip to Springfield.

My room had no a/c but the staff quickly moved me to another room, where the air definitely worked! No trash can but I happened to have a plastic grocery bag with me, so I used that. Older hotel, creepy elevator and so-so breakfast but it served its purpose. Would probably stay there again.

The location and historic potential of this hotel are great and I want to acknowledge that every interaction with staff was phenomenal. My lower ratings are centered on very basic offerings of amenities and a lack of attention to detail in cleanliness. There was some type of lipstick or makeup stain on out comforter and an additional stain on the side of one of the sheets. They weren't concerning enough to warrant a complaint especially given the short nature of the stay, but they were noticed. The water pressure in the shower was lacking and the AC struggled to keep up on a day that was moderalty warm. I'm hopeful renovations and changes can capture the true potential of this location, but in its current state its more on par with a chain motel while being priced like that of a more desired destination.

I did not get to stay here. They triple booked rooms. Multiple people were being turned away when I was attempting to check in. I had to drive over 30 minutes to get a new room, after driving almost 4 hours to get there. I was also still charged for the room.

My most recent stay was atrocious. There was no air conditioning at the hotel, so the temperature in my room ranged from 79 to 81 degrees the whole time. Totally unacceptable, and the staff didn't even seem to care about resolving the issue nor providing compensation (or fans). Initially, the first room they checked me into looked like someone had thrown a Vegas rager, which the hotel hadn't cleaned (phone unplugged and thrown across the room, tv trashed and thrown on the floor, debris on the bed). When I asked for a different room, they didn't even apologize; they just said, "try this one instead." That room had issues with the toilet. The property is in total disrepair and the service matches the shoddy state of the property. If I could give this negative stars, I would do!

They called my travel companion who stayed at the same hotel late at night before I we got there and said the hotel was closed because heat or ac wasn’t working. They weren’t clear. And then we scrambled to find another hotel in the middle of the night in a storm just so we didn’t sleep in the car!

I booked this reservation (#73075611150856) on April 7, 2025, and have received numerous confirmation emails, including one on April 27 ("All Set for Your Triip to Springfield") and yesterday ("John, how is your stay at State House...give us a quick peek of your check-in experience." I arrived to check in at 10:00 pm, having driven in from Naperville to judge at teh Illinois State History Fair on May 1. There were several people ahead of me. Apparently there was a mix-up with their rooms. It turned out that none of us had rooms despite reservations with Expedia, Hotels.com, etc. The front desk clerk advised that they had been sold out for weeks, and that there were very few rooms available in the city. She said this only applied to people who booked online. Had I booked directly with the State House Inn, I would have had a room, she said. I ended up staying far from my desired location in the most disgusting Motel 6 imaginable. If I have one good thing to say, the night desk clerk I spoke to later (Montez) was very helpful. My wallet had fallen out of my pants pocket, and he retrieved it and kept it safe until I retrieved it.

At 5:30 this evening, I was still not able to check in as the room was not ready. When my colleague got their room. It was extremely hot and not temperature appropriate. I finally canceled my reservation and drove home to Chicago.

The air conditioning was not working in guest rooms and the staff neglected to tell anyone at check in. The room was stifling. It was a sleepless night, especially since I have a health condition that makes be particularly sensitive to extreme temperatures. If the staff had been honest at check in, I could have reassessed my plan and made necessary arrangements. But instead they prioritized profits over the health and safety of guests. 0/10, do NOT recommend.

I loved the design of the property and the decor! It really is a beautiful hotel. What I didn't like was the first room I was put in didn't have a working AC and it was 85 in the room. The front desk staff moved me into another room, same exact issue. They moved me again for the 3rd time into a new room and still no working AC. They offered me a discount off the room but since I booked from a 3rd party site they couldn't. They then charged me again for the room even though I prepaid for my room. I had to get my bank involved and show proof that I prepaid.
