Reviews
The Portofino Hotel & Marina offers a beautiful location with stunning views of the ocean and marina, making it a popular choice for weekend getaways and events. However, some guests have expressed disappointment with insect problems in the suites, hidden fees, and poor maintenance of the rooms and bathrooms.

The staff members were really nice & accommodating. If it were for the staff alone, we would stay here again. Due to all the other things, we will not.

Thx, Mike and Bev

no toilet paper holder (roll on flush tank), no towel bar, no bar soap, no bathrobe, no chair for reading, no light for reading in bed $7 in room, 375mi water in room...elkay water filter in lobby.. the only be efit from the "resort fee"...I'm not price sensitive, but why do they charge so much per day per person for a phony resort fee? why not just charge for the room?
- 4/5
The pool was terrible. It looks like it has not been upkept since 1970. Literally old pool deck, rusted grates, and very small pool. There were no towels and it really really needs an overhall for the hotel to be charging as much. Even the pool chairs should be updated. Thank goodness the beach close and harbor and pier were the highlights.
- 4/5
We got an oceanside room and it was amazing to watch the boats, crew, sea lions and birds all day and in the mornings. The room was nice and we absolutely loved the lobby, coffee shop, and Baleen restaurant. The pool was terrible. It looks like it has not been upkept since 1970. Literally old pool deck, rusted grates, and very small pool. There were no towels and it really really needs an overhall for the hotel to be charging as much. Even the pool chairs should be updated. Location fantastic. Didn't have breakfast at the hotel. Will stay again. This was our second time .
- 5/5
Great food at the Baleen, clean and comfortable room, upscale, walking distance to great tourist attractions. Will return and highly recommend
- 5/5
Beautiful property and staff is so nice!
- 5/5
I highly recommend paying a little more for the water view rooms. We enjoyed the seal lions and boats. The boat side is ok, but is mostly a view of the power plant. There is no direct beach access and it is a bit of a walk. If you are up for it, you have Redondo Beach 15 minutes walk south and Hermosa a 15 minute walk north, making it a great location for exploring. Would definitely stay again.
- 5/5
Staff was the best - from early check in to replacing a non-working hair dryer within minutes and bringing extra coffee pods within a minute of requesting. Staff is the top commodity here
- 5/5
Amazing staff/hotel/restaurant. 10/10, will be returning

Always a pleasure staying here!
- 4/5
I stayed here for the first time for Beachlife and it is a wonderful location for it and the area overall…and the restaurant across the parking lot is a good breakfast spot, great view l, on the water, but do not get a marina view because you’re really looking at a parking lot.
- 5/5
Great place and awesome staff all so friendly from valet to housekeeping. Only issue was accessing internet but got help and all was good. Other small issue is only one small elevator but its only 3 stories high so no big deal. Great resteraunt and neat little bar and coffee place inside.

Got lucky upgrade to ocean view suite, fantastic for watching sunset. Complimentary breakfast was great too. Staff was so helpful. Will definitely stay here next time back in town.
- 5/5
Great Staff, views and lovely stay on ocean front - the seals were so fun!
- 5/5
Friendly and helpful staff throughout the property. Baleen Kitchen was great as always.
- 4/5
Awesome room with awesome views. However I was disappointed because the balcony glass and floor was covered in old bird poop would’ve been nice if the balcony was cleaned properly a quick mop job would’ve got the job done. Overall I loved the room and ocean view. I would stay here again.
- 5/5
My room was clean. The staff was friendly. The breakfast was amazing, i highly recommend getting the ocean view room.
- 5/5
Really nice stay here, its a very hectic weekend and while other hotels have been short, the gals at the front desk stayed super cool, cheerful, helpful, over the top to accommodate and support a great stay. The place isn't new, but well kept. Enjoyed the seals over the water & activity. They've upped Baleen in looks and menu, again super nice people working. Work out room is minimal. In general the great folks working were what made things go so well.

A nice boutique hotel. We had a one night stay and did not eat on the property. We appreciated the location, easy walk to the pier.
- 2.5/5
I grew up close to the hotel location, and it's like coming home when I can come back to the area. The view was ok but not great. The size of the room was nice. The hotel as a whole is dated and a bit worn. The cooling/heating device in the room was noisy. They could only provide regular coffee in the room, and if you wanted decaf, you needed to pay $4.00 per cup from their coffee bar. When attempting to get coffee from the coffee bar, the person was on a permanent break. Our room was at the end of the hotel, right over the hotel entrance to the parking lot, and the traffic of people and cars in and out was heavy most of the time. So we were disappointed with our overall stay and will look for other lodging next time we visit South Redondo Beach.

I celebrated my birthday a little early and The Portofino Hotel was the perfect local getaway! The room views were gorgeous as we opted for an Oceanside deluxe room with a patio overlooking the ocean. It was so relaxing getting to sit out and watch all of the boats, paddle boarders, and kayakers pass by throughout the day. The staff, in particular, Gregory, and our valet attendant were amazing! So many restaurants nearby that are walking distance around the marina and not to mention, Redondo Beach pier also walking distance. Everyone was so helpful and informative; we visited this property before but as wedding guests previously. To have been a hotel guest was a top tier experience. This will definitely be my local go to for local getaways, we can’t wait to come back already!

One are the greatest experiences I have
- 5/5
I loved everything about this place. I called and asked questions several times before my guest and I arrived. Everytime, the staff was friendly and answered all questions. The room had a nice view as described on their page, and I requested rose petals for the room which were arranged so perfectly! The restaurant across the way had delicious food and great service both times (We had dinner and breakfast before we left). I will definitely be coming back here and recommend the location to anyone I know. Thank you all at the Portofino.

Just a view Couches was nasty. Floor was dirty. Dust in the room ants everywhere dusty headboards just a awful experience.
- 3/5
An old hotel but amazing location
- 4/5
Location, near to the pier, right at the beach front Not many restaurants nearby, walkable. Had to drive.
- 4.5/5
We would appreciate complimentary water in the guest rooms.
- 4/5
I like there was friendly staff and easy to get to rooms. The view was great from the room we were in. The boats going by we're nice. Sadly the free drinks we didn't like therr should be more options other then sparkling water and wine.
- 4/5
I loved my ocean facing suite with a desk and a small sofa and table so I could spread out and work as needed, separate from the bed. The bed was very comfortable.
- 5/5
Fresh cooked👍
- 5/5
Excellent guest service. Clean room with beautiful view. Restaurant staff extremely well trained and food was excellent.
- 5/5
Beautiful room and water view!! Charge for parking.
- 1.5/5
the location mess with parking, if you stay at the hotel and in the morning you want a breakfast, you can’t just go to have it, you must reserve your freaking table, otherwise it’s 30+ minutes waiting time, which is insane… with parking it is another story, they have park by yourself spots, valet and vip spots, all of them cost the same and valet parking person decides where you’ll park! if you drive tesla and you give them valet access to your car - they will reject it and won’t park it for you, “liability” bullsh#t, they require you to have a key / key cards, otherwise - go park yourself, BUT if that parking guy decides that you’re a nice guy with $20 out of the pocket, you’re eligible to park even on the vip spots no question
- 5/5

I booked Portofino for Thanksgiving week with my son and to visit family who live in the area. The location is spectacular, with one side having a view of the marina and the other side of the hotel having a view of the ocean. You could hear the sea lions at night, which was just magical. The rooms were nice, clean, and stylish. My only warning is that the sofa bed was a bit worn out, but my son said he slept well. The restaurant on the property was pretty busy, so make sure you give yourself enough time to eat and have a reservation if you plan to eat there. Other than that, lovely stay - very walkable area by the ocean and the Redondo Pier.
- 5/5
Staff, super kind and helpful.

- 5/5
The Portofino Inn never disappoints. Location, cleanliness, dining..
- 5/5
I loved the setting and the room. I could sit on the balcony and listen to the waves lap and the seals bark.
- 5/5
He couldn’t ask for a better staff at the front desk. They were both very friendly the whole property everybody’s very professional and friendly clean. The room was beautiful with the view. Definitely would stay there again.
- 4/5
Room and bed good CRITICISMS: 1. Bathroom Lighting Horrible...could not see well to shave. 2. No Grab bar in tub- dangerous for anybody 3. Need more hooks and shelving in bathroom - really nowhere for 2 guests to spread out toiletries.
- 5/5
Upon arrival, Samantha at the front desk greeted us with friendly courtesy. My husband jokes with everyone, and she interacted with him perfectly, and made us feel that we had made a friend. The room was perfect, and we enjoyed watching a beautiful sunset from our balcony.
- 5/5
The bed was comfortable! And all staff were so kind and professional. The best is the gentleman with valet parking. He is brunette with a beard. Very nice to my hubby and I.
- 5/5
We loved the sea lions and listening to them bark!
- 3/5
They did not tell me when I checked in that I needed to let the water run for 45 minutes before it gets really hot-would have been a perfect stop if not for that. People just are t friendly in California, nothing you can do about that
- 3/5
Just a mess.
- 5/5
And loved that they set up the pack n play and I didn’t have to do it (bonus)
- 4/5
I honestly loved the location & scenery. I would definitely book here every time I come to LA. It was truly a hidden gem & I could not be anymore thankful. I’m looking forward to trying the bikes next time.
- 5/5
I got into LA at 4:30am and made it to the hotel thinking I would have to check in after 2ish and would be exhausted for the morning. They allowed me to check in early and I crashed for a good 3 hours!!! I really really appreciated the early check in. It was above and beyond what any hotel has ever done for me.
- 4/5
clean room, staff , shop at the hotel, close to the beach
- 5/5
I loved every minute of our stay. We are definitely returning very soon!
- 5/5
Beautiful view
- 1/5
The low rating for the hotel on this trip is due to the fact that in the morning, my wife and I woke up to our toilet and bathtub, filled with sewage water from the rooms above us. It had also spilled out onto the floor. We discovered this when my wife went to use the bathroom this morning and was curious why her feet were wet and then got very grossed out. We called the front desk, informed them of the issue and they said that they will have maintenance work on it where the hotel could have done better was to actually have somebody come to our room and talk to us, but that never occurred. After not hearing anything. I had to go to the front desk and speak to the staff myself which put me in a less than desirable mood. They gave us another room so we could get cleaned up as we were checking out however, when we went to that room, there was hotel staff working in that room and saying we could not use that room. We went back to the front desk, all other rooms were filled and so we had no other choices my wife changed in the gym and then we left. The staff was apologetic and compensated us for the valet, some food charges and our resort fee, which made things somewhat OK.
- 5/5
Rooms are spacious and clean. Beautiful property and view.
- 5/5
Room was large, Aircon good and the bed was comfortable. Staff were polite and helpful and the restaurant attached to the hotel overlooking the marina was excellent. Only slight niggle was a longer walk to my room because of renovations taking place. I’ll definitely stay again next time I’m in the area 👍👏👏👏
- 5/5
I performed a solo cannonball run across the country. The staff was super excited to see and welcome me. No crazy speeding or anything. Just wanted to see how fast I could do it for fun.
- 5/5
Incredible and the atmosphere is lovely.
- 5/5
The staff was very helpful and professional.
- 4/5
Everything was good. We did not have a microwave in our room and then we requested a blanket in the morning and we didn’t get it until the evening.
- 5/5
location
- 4/5
Great view nice staff busy but quiet great experience overall
- 3/5
Elevator stop working. Could not enter pool area without maintenance.
- 5/5
It’s was a great stay until the maintenance man starting yelling saying we were smoking on the balcony when it was the room next to us. It was a vape pen they were smoking but someone always has to be a Karen.
- 5/5
Great
- 5/5
Still working on receiving the free breakfast.
- 5/5
Amazing staff, beautiful property, to make it perfect a shuttle to busy Hermosa parking would be ideal! We would definitely stay there again!
- 5/5
Only negative was very dimly lit bathroom.
- 5/5
I had a truly wonderful stay! The staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming, making me feel at home from the moment I arrived. The views were absolutely gorgeous — the kind you want to soak in with a morning coffee or evening glass of wine. The property is peaceful and quiet, yet perfectly located so everything is within easy reach. A fantastic combination of comfort, beauty, and convenience — I can’t wait to return!
- 5/5
Good times!
- 5/5
Friendly, safe, and well maintained
- 5/5
Sea view room is worth it
- 5/5
Always a pleasant stay.
- 5/5
Everything was great!!
- 5/5
Stunning in every way. Get the ocean view. It’s worth it.
- 5/5
Very friendly staff, excellent service and easy access to beach, restaurants and shops. The property is older but very well-maintained. Lots of outdoor activities including paddle boats, kayaking, biking, and swimming. The bar and lounge was friendly and luxurious. The restaurant was light and airy with great food, great service, and beautiful views of the marina. The only minor issue we had was that the glass balcony to our room was a bit marred by birds and was not properly cleaned. Highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to be spoiled for a few days!
- 2/5
Over priced, costly parking and resort fees.
- 5/5
We had a lovely stay and will be back. It was conveniently located by car and the stag were amazing. We highly recommend staying here!
- 5/5
Loved the location of the hotel and our ocean view room. The staff, from valet service and front desk were personable and attentive. Also loved the food from the in-house restaurant.
- 3/5
Average 3 star hotel. Nothing special about the rooms or services. The only plus is the view.
- 4/5
fortunately, my friends didn't mind the sea lions barking outside their window all night!
- 3/5
Staff was very nice, and the property was clean. But, it is not a $480 / night location, plus parking ($40) and a resort Fee ($35). This is a $300 dollar a night stay, not $550 a night.
- 4/5
Lobby area was nice to hang out in and the restaurant overlooking the marina was fun to spot seals and sting rays.
- 5/5
The e-bikes were fun and free for 1 hour
- 4/5
The only downside to the hotel is the fees. There is a resort fee, steep parking fee and then there was a few extra smaller charges on our bill. Just makes it add up fast.
- 5/5
Friendly staff and beautiful setting
- 3/5
Had a problem with the toilet at 10pm when we we're asleep
- 5/5
We like everything about his hotel. Its our favorite hotel. The staff is amazing, the rooms are clean, the beds are so comfy. The best part of the hotel is listening to the seals outside our room. Great walking/bike rentals to food and sightseeing. Highly reccomend.
- 5/5
Quiet, beautiful property, excellent staff, wonderful room!
- 5/5
Views were amazing! Food was amazing!
- 5/5
We want to stay longer next time so we can enjoy the views and the friendly atmosphere and staff!
- 5/5
Great place
- 5/5
The location of The Portofino is convenient for our purpose of visiting family. Nice shopping and good restaurants are nearby. We always have a meal or two at Baleen.
- 4/5
Right on the ocean & marina.
- 5/5
Love the property
- 5/5
The room and hotel is very nice
- 5/5
Elegant, quiet, beautiful water views, immaculate service.
- 1/5
This hotel charges a per day per room non refundable resort fee as well as a 100 dollar per day hold for incidentals ie if you stay 4 days 400 for incidentals plus the daily resort fee and they basically force valet parking on you.
- 5/5
This property was amazing.
- 4.5/5
It’s a little rundown. Some renovation would be great.
- 5/5
Hotel Employee is the best representative of the hotel. From the moment we arrived, he went above and beyond to ensure my stay was comfortable and enjoyable. His professionalism, attentiveness, and warm demeanor made a lasting impression.
- 5/5
Perfect location. Great hotel.
- 3/5
Considering the price, the bathroom cleanliness was disappointing. I even found a piece of nail art by the bathtub.
- 5/5
Awesome hotel and will definitely be staying here next time we’re in town!
- 3/5
Did not like the exorbitant resort fee (no additional amenities) or the ridiculous and exorbitant self parking fee.
- 5/5
The Balleen restaurant food was not good.
- 4/5
Lovely property; friendly and efficient staff. Unfortunately, the jacusi showers are not suitable for elderly, disabled or tall persons. We booked rooms expecting a stall shower. My bad, but your info could be clearer.
- 5/5
Great stay! Great service! Love the South Bay!
- 5/5
Very nice stay, the gave us a free upgrade to ocean view & the food at Baleen Kitchen was excellent.
- 5/5
I like everything
- 5/5
Excellent Stay! We loved every second of our visit to The Portofino. We had the friendliest welcome at check in with Craig who went above and beyond to make our experience was extra special. The ocean views were incredible and the room was clean, updated and beautiful. We will be back! :)
- 5/5
The customer service was amazing. Always with a smile of their faces and always accommodating
- 3/5
The property room needs to be more clean and comfortable
- 3/5
The shake down at the front gate wanting me to prove if I'm staying here. My wifi wasn't working so it was kind of an uncomfortable interaction. Possibly having access to reservations to check if my name was on the list may have made the interaction better. After that the find a parking spot game started there was an event a (concert) so a good portion of the parking was taken by locals attending the concert. Not sure how they made it past security. So valet was my only option, was told by the guy working it that valet was free so i figured cool i’ll tip more. Then my bill said different. The stay itself was ok location was ok. options for biking and local beach's was good short walk or ride . They blew the arrival though most arriving have just spent a few hours driving to the destination and probably expecting better based on your price point . My second stay here the first visit brought me back, so maybe just a bad weekend .
- 3/5
No vip benefits when checking in at front desk. Front desk stated they have never heard of benefit. Would ask management and let me know, never did contact me. Room is small, very loud neighbor in other room, banging, and loud music played on balcony facing ocean. Thin walls could hear everything in other rooms. Friendly staff, but rooms overpriced for what you have to deal with...
- 5/5
The staff was absolutely wonderful. The complimentary glass of wine when you arrive is a bonus. The place is clean and beautiful. Nothing but great things to say about Portofino! I will absolutely be visiting again
- 5/5
Property was beautiful and clean. Outstanding restaurant and staff.
- 5/5
I stayed there twice now it's lovely
- 5/5
The tubs on the bottom floor facing the ocean should be upgraded.
- 5/5
Great hotel in a lovely location. Busy at weekends but perfect during the week. Try and get a room on the ocean side.
- 4/5
Nice place to stay
- 3/5
Tired, dated property. Too expensive for the conditions and the amenities they offer. Bare minimum staffing. There was a coffee machine in the room but no coffee capsules. The bathrooms were very small with even smaller vanity and very poor lighting. No service at the lobby bar, instead they have a wall of self-pour wine tabs.
- 4/5
Hotel is very nice. One thing they don’t tell you with an ocean view room is that the seals are loud all day and all night.
- 5/5
Used Valet parking which was excellent. The valets also acted as porters and took my bags to the room. Very convenient.
- 4/5
Would have loved to have use the spa we paid for but it was not clean...
- 5/5
Beautiful location. Perfect for walks along the boardwalk and sea front.
- 5/5
This is our favorite hotel when flying out of LAX! So convenient and wonderful marina views!
- 5/5
Area was safe and walkable to local dining and activities
- 5/5
Very nice great staff
- 5/5
Beautiful place; staff are excellent, highly recommended!
- 5/5
Convenient location, quite and clean. Great views from ocean view room on the second floor balcony
- 3/5
Front desk day shot could have been more polite. Rooms definitely need to be checked after housekeeping cleans. But over all this our favorite place
- 5/5
Ocean view is betiful
- 3/5
the hotel is old and needs to be upgraded. We received none of our VIP amenities except for the high price of a basic room that didn't disclose the 100s of sea otters that would interupt our sleep that we could hear through the slider.
- 5/5
The "Living Room" off the lobby was incredible! A beautiful place to watch the sunset, enjoy a cocktail by the fireplace, or sit and read a book! The staff was exceptional! And the location, to the amazing Redondo Pier, was easily walkable. We cant wait to come back!

Craig was very friendly at the front desk during check-in. I love this place. I live 20 minutes away but I always come here to recharge my batteries. I love the ocean view and listening to the seals in the Marina as I fall asleep.
- 4/5
We really enjoyed walking the Strand. The hotel was nice and quiet. Excellent views of the ocean. Many options for dining close by.
- 5/5
We had such an amazing experience! Starting from booking the process was easy and quick. The customer service was amazing everyone was friendly and extremely helpful! The rooms were clean fully stocked and we had a beautiful ocean view. It was romantic and relaxing. Also at check in we were given a complimentary glass of champagne and anytime we needed help it was immediate! Overall our stay was a 10/10
- 5/5
Great place to stay.
- 1/5
Room was dirty and literally had ants on my toothbrush!!!
- 5/5
Great hotel, would stay again when in town.
- 5/5
Staff was very kind, courteous, accommodating. Dogs welcome. Comfortable. Quiet. Clean. Good food on-site.
- 5/5
Staff were so kind. Beautiful view and I loved the sea Lion colony. My dog could join me and it was a reset from the ire’s and losing my home.
- 5/5
it was a day spent away from the LA fire
- 3/5
Really expensive hotel for what it is. The "ocean front" view is basically rocks blocking a full view of the ocean. Beds are way too soft, wifi is very slow (my work calls were all interrupted due to poor wifi). There's not even a microwave in the room, they just direct you to their restaurant on site.
- 4/5
Again coffee maker and hairdryer didn’t work. Not a dealbreaker.
- 4/5
Everything was great but coffee maker and hairdryer didn’t work. Loved the barking seals and upgrade to Oceanside.
- 4/5
Stunning place!!

The hotel is nice and you can rent bikes to ride in Hermosa Beach. But we had ants in our bathroom and room. They were nice and offered to change rooms but there were ants there too. We did get $100 credit to use at the restaurant. Nice people but probably older hotel on the water.
